#13804 Happy Spring!

I

t is a wonderful time of year at Camp Dudley as we anticipate the arrival of nearly 700 boys for our programs this summer, our 134th continuous year of operation! This month, our full attention turns to summer preparations as we get ready to share the magic of Camp Dudley with boys from approximately 30 states and 20 countries.

Our Dudley team is hard at work on all fronts: Steve, Jeff, Scott, John and Ben are painting cabins, finishing roofs, prepping fields and readying pipes on campus. Kristy and Ken are getting cabins ready for summer use.

Dave and Dawn are spearheading our development efforts so that we can close out the Building For The Future Capital Campaign and support the ever-increasing requests of the Willie Schmidt Scholarship Fund.

Anita and Evan have worked hard to fill our camps and prepare campers and parents for the summer ahead. Evan has assembled an amazing leadership team that can’t wait to arrive to begin inspiring their campers.

Fred and Jesse are collecting tuition, ordering program supplies and finalizing contracts for the more than 275 Dudley employees who will work with the boys this summer.

Lefty is updating the website, www.campdudley.org, and finalizing our marketing and social media plans that keep parents and alumni connected.

Josh is hiring and training our food service staff and meeting with local farmers to make sure we are supporting them in advance of their feeding us.

I am finishing a fantastic visit with our friends at Camp Abbensen in Hanover Germany, meeting the German campers who will take part in the 2018 exchange. I also love working with Jess up at the Dudley Garden. We try to turn the soil over as soon as possible so that our first veggies are ready when the campers arrive.

It is a hopeful time for all of us. I am grateful for this amazing team. The pre-season butterflies have stirred in our bellies as we anticipate all that is to come. We know that our motto, “The Other Fellow First” is as relevant today as ever, and we cannot wait to share it with the boys of 2018.

Dear Friends,

inety-nine summers ago, Kiniya founder Helen Van Buren (fondly known as “Miss V.B.”), purchased the land where she started our beloved Camp. This was no small feat… visionary single woman obtaining financing to acquire this incredible property. When Jack and Mimi Williams purchased Kiniya in 1951, they honored many of the traditions started by Miss V.B. while creating new ones of their own.

Over these years, Kiniya has empowered thousands of young women. For each generation, there has been a deep pride of place; a respect for our buildings, land and our history. The experience has always combined peace, tranquility and reflection with exuberance, a sense of joy in life, and an appreciation of the subtler displays of commitment, trust and service. The Kiniya Spirit asks for our best and brings it out in a way that is fresh and rewarding.

Last summer we filled Coleman Dining Hall with that Kiniya Spirit. We brought our songs, cheers and our joyful selves. It quickly became our place of comfort and warmth, allowing us a spectacular space to fuel our bodies and nourish our souls. As we approach Kiniya’s 100th summer, we look ahead with excitement for the new Kiniya Theater. We are equally committed to preserving Kiniya’s two oldest buildings - the Lodge and the Barn, enhancing these historic spaces through structural reinforcement and TLC to ensure their use for our Art and Outdoor Programs.

I like to think that former Directors, Miss V.B., Harry and Marjorie Brown, Mimi and Jack Williams, are smiling broadly as we continue our role as stewards of this beautiful place they shaped through the years. Their work is honored as we provide the best possible program for this generation of girls. Kiniya continues to inspire curiosity, celebrate creativity, foster confidence, and forge connections.

Whether you were here half a century ago or a new camper last summer, you share precious memories of hikes to Mt. Mansfield, campouts at the Moscow Property, icy dips in the lake, camp songs in the dining hall, Kiwi Celebrations, Awards Ceremonies, CampKINIYA’S fires, and other camp traditions that still occur today. Stories and memories 100 th shared between campers past and present weave together a vibrant tapestry built on decades of tradition and new discoveries each summer.

Letters to the Editor #7731 Pete Willmott, Chicago, IL, wrote to Matt and Marnie: “Today I received a copy of the latest (Fall 2017) Dudley News. It was a fabulous document to read. Everyone connected with the publication should be very proud. Most college publications of a similar ilk can not hold a candle to the Dudley News. I include Williams College in that group! Congratulations to all, Pete Willmott #7731.” Ed. Note: Thanks Pete, and this is the 70th Anniversary of your association with Camp!

1955 asked me if I was interested in working in the kitchen at Dudley. I had gone to other summer camps for 1 & 2 week periods for a few years and loved camp life. Off to Dudley I went in 1955, had such a good time I came back in 1956. When I graduated from high school in 1956, Coach Parkhurst signed my year book "To CD #8001."

Many years later in 1996, I told Director Wheaton Griffin the story of "#8001." He realized I had no number so he gave me #17001— 40 years and 9000 campers later — and I was thrilled! I bet I'm the oldest one in that series of camper numbers! Ron”

#17001 Ron MacLean, Trumansburg NY wrote “I have always enjoyed reading the Camp Dudley News ever since my great experiences at camp in the mid 1950s. The Fall 2017 issue was no exception but I particularly appreciated the "Excerpts from a Chapel Service-Philanthropy by Dwight Poler. His description of the various applications of the CD motto, "The Other Fellow First" through out the stages of his life to date must have been inspiring to all those in attendance.

My experience at Camp Dudley was not as a camper, nor a leader, nor a staff member. I was a member of the Kitchen Crew in 1955 and 1956 who took advantage of all that Dudley offered those two summers.

I loved being part of Camp Dudley and easily found a relationship with "The Other Fellow First." It just seemed like the right thing to live by. Little did I know then, how much that phrase would stay with me and guide me.

As I approach the age of 80, I look back over those 60+ years and see how much my life has benefited by remembering that Camp Dudley motto. I thank you for that and for those two wonderful summers. Continue to emphasize the importance of that motto.

From Father/Son Weekend: To: Matt, Evan, Dave, Josh, Dawn and Sam, “Thank you so much for putting together a fantastic weekend at Dudley and for being so generous with your time. It was awesome to see the boys having fun while getting to know each other. I really enjoyed meeting and getting to know the fathers. My son had a blast (no surprise) and has been missing camp already this week. He is definitely looking forward to summer!

“The activities couldn't have been more appropriate for the weekend theme. Everyone attending contributed in their own way to making the event memorable. It was great to hear the Dudley values continue on after all these years. And it was impressive to hear so much about the importance of good leadership. Also nice to see so many familiar Dudley family names in the 2017 Last Whistle.

“The photos were amazing and were a great way to let my wife, daughter and son's grandparents know what we were all up to over the weekend!

“Thank you all again!!! Event couldn't have been more fun. Hopefully we'll cross paths soon.”

From a Staff member: “Last summer, I really had the best summer of my life.

I've noticed little things in my daily routine that I have kept from camp, especially the table manners, hee hee. I also find myself singing different songs from camp now and then. I have spoken so much about my camp experience to my parents and friends, that I'm sure they all feel like they were there! My mum also wanted to thank you for supporting me when I felt down.

“All the staff and campers are so amazing and I feel blessed to have met everyone. I've also had a word

with my 9 year old cousin and she sounds so excited at the idea of coming to camp. Her first worry was, will she make friends? I have assured her that she will have an abundance of friends. Now, I just have to speak to my aunt about all the details.

“As I get started planning for the rest of the year, I would like to include coming back to camp in my plans, of course if you will have me back. I really enjoyed working there and I learned as much as I taught. Thank you.”

From Parents: “We want to thank you very much for your generosity in ensuring that our daughters attend camp again this year. The summer of 2018 will make three years that our daughters have been attending Camp Kiniya! Wow, how time flies.

“I think back to that very first day that we drove up from our home state and left them in Colchester for their very first extended time away from us. We felt nervous, and were thinking of all that could go wrong given that we would be hundreds of miles away.

“Unbeknown to us at the time, Camp Kiniya has been one of the greatest developmental opportunities they have had to challenge themselves, make their own decisions, learn and socialize with other girls their age. We have truly seen them grow from the camp experience.

“We are looking forward to seeing you all in July again. Selfishly of course, I cannot wait for them to put the iPhones away for a month (lol).”

Small World #7549 Dick Maider, Seattle WA recently wrote to Dave Langston. “I was a Camp Dudley camper about 19481950. I am the youngest son of Lydon F. and Dorothy S. Maider residing in Gloversville, NY. I now live in a retirement community in Seattle, WA. The other night I was having dinner with Taylor Putney. We eventually got around to talking about what we did as youngsters growing up in New York State. When we learned that we had Camp Dudley in common he immediately shouted out his camp number 6 377! But, I was unable to answer with my number. I was hoping your records went back far enough to come up with my camp number so that the two of us will have something in common. Thanks, Dick Maider.

PS. As you may know #7576 Richard Woodworth and #7027 Mike Dehlendorf are both Middlebury alums

and Mike was a fraternity brother. Small world.”

The “small world” was about to get even smaller when Dave responded, providing Dick with his #7549 camp number, asking about other family members who had attended Camp, told him about “MOP” (our Middlebury Outdoor Pavilion) and #126 6 4 Ted Smith’s efforts to raise funding for it.

Dick responded, “I was at Middlebury in the class of 1958. I was a member of the Chi Psi fraternity and was its president during my senior year. Also in my class and my fraternity was one Ted Smith!! Not sure if he is the same Ted Smith who was on your Board of Trustees. The Ted Smith I knew was a member of the Middlebury men’s quartet and he passed away several years ago. How’s that for a small world story??”

Dave promptly informed Ted Smith IV, who in turn replied; “Yep, That is definitely my father, Ted Smith, III. I’d love to be in touch with Dick. All best, Ted.” So, what started as a simple request for a forgotten camp number has produced yet another Camp Dudley small world saga and another Lost Sheep being found!! #896 4 Fred Tibbits, Bangkok, Thailand, longtime professional in the wine and hospitality business, received an inquiry from a Bill Montgomery after he had read one of Fred’s publications mentioning a Roger Friedman. Montgomery wrote to Fred, “Fred, although you have never heard of me, I am a Williams classmate of Roger’s. Since I am responsible for putting together periodic ‘Class Notes’ for our class, he tried to forward me your Jan. 13 message to him about our other classmate, Chan Headley; would you be so kind as to send it to me?” Fred did so, along with the names of other Williams College grads that had attended Dudley. He told Bill of #7731 Pete Willmott.

“At Camp Dudley his name was ‘Willmott Williams.’ My camp name was ‘Porky,’ because I loved the Camp Dudley ‘comfort food’ meals so much. In fact, beginning with my Plebe year at Dudley, the Director called on me at the annual Dudley Reunion in Albany in the fall to, ‘Tell all the prospective campers and their parents how good the food was.’ Bill responded, ‘I’m from the Williams class of 1955, like Roger. I knew many of those Dudley guys; #706 7 Dave Sterling and I were JA roommates, and he was my best friend at Williams. I remain in touch with his brother, #7026 Pete ’53. Camp Dudley was indeed a feeding ground for Williams.”

Small World #12714 Jonathan Durham, Corinth, VT, wrote to Kiniya’s #20005 Gail Coleman in the Fall. “My wife, Margaret, and I run a diversified farm nestled in the hills of Eastern Vermont with our three boys. Last spring we searched for a commercial grade stove to meet the needs of our expanding events and dinners at the farm, and Margaret answered an ad from a camp on Lake Champlain in Vermont that had one to sell as they were moving into a new and expanded dining hall. Visiting Lake Champlain always has me thinking of my days at Dudley in the 1980s but I was sure I was on the wrong side of the lake. So who was more surprised: Myself when I arrived at Camp Kiniya to find I was at Dudley on the Vermont side of the lake? Or the staff at Kiniya when I told them I am camper #12714? Needless to say that it has been a great way to reconnect with Dudley, plus we couldn’t be happier with the stove. I can’t help but share my best food memory from Camp: Monday morning they made fresh doughnuts for breakfast. My cabin awoke extra early to raid the kitchen and get some still hot doughnuts. But as we approached the back door we realized we had been beaten at this game, for a family of skunks was by the door eating treats tossed out by the kitchen crew! Unable to bypass the skunks we went back to our bunks and had doughnuts at the regular time with everyone else.” Jonathan Durham, Corinth, VT. #96 75 Dave “Westy” West checked in from Naples, FL. “I’m in the basement terminal at Ft. Myers Airport with my sister, about to board a puddle jumper to Orlando, when we start laughing at this guy making baby faces and baby talk into his phone. I asked him what language that was and he said ‘upstate NY.’ Him: Reed Fuller and Dave Syracuse. Me: New Hartford/ West meet at the Ft. Clinton/Westport. Him: Camp Myers Airport, Dudley. Me: What’s your # blah blah blah. Him: blah blah blah. #15017 Evan George was my college roommate and this is my first time away from my baby. #15010 Reed Fuller of course.”

Mystery Artist?

#12494 David Gray, Fairfield, CT, wrote to Matt after a recent Father/Son Weekend at Camp. “Matt, Here’s a funny story. Looking at the portrait of Willie (think it is him) in Maclean Lodge this past weekend got me thinking it looked really familiar. Then it hit me . . . it had to be done by the same artist that did a painting for my Mom and Dad of us four children, sometime in the mid-1970s, probably a few years before I went to Dudley. Check out the signature lower right and the same technique on the blue shirts! Do you happen to know anything about this painting in Maclean, is it in fact Willie, and who did it?

I am going to try to dig up some information from my family to find out about the artist. – Another awesome connection!!”

Camp’s Newest Board of Trustee Members #24878 Diane Calello, Trustee Martinsville, NJ

D

iane has seen camp through many lenses, first when visiting her future husband #14278 P.J., then almost 20 years later as Camp Doctor, and now as mother to camper #23878, Caroline and Max and Cosmo (Camp # TBD).

Since graduating from the College of William and Mary, Diane obtained her medical degree at the New Jersey Medical School (Rutgers University) and completed residency and fellowship training at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. A pediatric emergency physician and toxicologist, she is excited to bring her experience to the health and safety of campers, continuing the good work already being done on that front. As Executive and Medical Director of the New Jersey Poison Control Center, she has broad experience in management of non-profit organizations and multi-agency partnerships. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the American College of Medical Toxicology, the professional organization for her area of specialty nationwide.

Diane first came to Dudley in 1993 and it was “love at first sight.” She said, “The caliber of people, and the friendships between them, were exceptional. This was no ordinary place.” She now senses the power of both Dudley and Kiniya to shape the leaders Diane Calello, Trustee of tomorrow. She is excited to lend her expertise and enthusiasm to an organization in which she has “tremendous faith and to provide a safe and nurturing space for the development of intellect, values, self-confidence, self-discovery, and healthy lifelong relationships.”

#25075 Leslee MacKenzie, Trustee Burlington, VT

L

eslee MacKenzie is a mom of two first generation campers. Her son, #23075 Sam, has attended Camp Dudley for five years, most recently as an Aide in the Cub Division. Her daughter, #23316 Kate, received her Kiwi Disc in 2017 at Camp Kiniya and will be back in 2018 for her 5th summer.

Introduced to camp by a college friend, the MacKenzie’s were immediately taken with it. Living close to Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks, it was the perfect fit for their family. Leslee is a strong believer in providing opportunities to our children in their formative years which can make a difference over a lifetime.

Also, in an era of athletic specialization, attending Camp Dudley or Kiniya is the perfect balance for kid’s development — not to mention the fun!

As a Board Member, Leslee will bring expertise from her business and community involvement. Following a 10-year merchandising career in Boston, she returned to Burlington. She is President & Co-Owner of Coldwell Banker Hickok & Boardman Realty, focusing

on residential real estate and relocation.

Leslee’s experience includes strategic and Leslee MacKenzie, Trustee, with Kate and Sam financial planning, sales, marketing and organizational culture.

Currently a Board Member of the Vermont Business Roundtable, Burlington Business Association & the Vermont Futures Project, past roles include the March of Dimes and Make-A-Wish. Leslee’s volunteer efforts have focused on children, health related issues, early education and economic development.

“It is an honor to be able to contribute back to Camp Dudley and Kiniya. It is a place that has given so much to Sam and Kate and has become part of the fabric of our family.”

New CDA Vice Presidents #16 119 Marlon Fisher, CDA V.P. Burlington, VT

A

rriving at Dudley as a Cub in 1993, Marlon had never seen anything as beautiful as the Adirondack mountains. Through the generousity of the Dan Donahue family and the Merrill Lynch Scholarship Builder Program, Marlon got to Dudley. Subsequently, Dudley and the people associated with it became the most cherished aspect of Marlon’s life. Marlon became a leader in 2000, Cub Division Head for several years and then a Dudley summer staff member.

Marlon served the Army as an All Source Intelligence Analyst, from 2008-2016, including a tour of duty in Afghanistan. There Marlon discovered his ability to make others laugh through comedy. Since then, Marlon has been known as “Big Fish” on stage. Marlon was a Seven Daysie finalist in 2015, and in 2017 was a finalist in Vermont’s Funniest Comic Competition.

Through public and community service, Marlon has instructed, mentored, and worked with youth in residential settings, wilderness programs, and the community, a desire that came from Marlon’s Dudley experience.

Marlon married Aron Steward in August 2015, bought a home, adopted two kitties, and settled in Burlington, VT. The greatest joy in Marlon’s life arrived in July 2016 when Percy Wynston was born. A second son, Malachai, arrived in February 2018.

Marlon brings energy and passion to the CDA from years of dedication and the countless gifts he has received. He is committed to inclusion, connection, and effective leadership. Marlon works to engage individuals, audiences, and large organizations and to inspire others to share a common mission. Marlon believes in Dudley, founded on its connective values and looks forward to representing and promoting its mission.

#19231, Kari McKinley, CDA V.P. South Burlington, VT

K

ari, daughter of #10231 Schelling and Annie McKinley, grew up in Westport, NY. As her brothers, #16231 Arne and #18231 Leif, headed to Dudley every summer, she yearned for a “sister” experience. While never a camper, she happily joined the Dudley Hike Hut staff in 2004. Her three years in the Hike Hut were incredible, but without hesitation she accepted the Senior D-head role at Kiniya in 2007. She then spent four years as D-Head, Tripping Director, and in Leadership Development with the Aides, JLs, and ALs. Earning her Kiwi disc in 2010, Kari reflected on the evolution of Camp Dudley and Kiniya and what an honor it was to be a part of that process. Since then, Kari has served as a member of the health care staff.

Kari studied Biology at McGill University, with a semester at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

Upon graduating, she moved to Burlington, VT (“unable to pull myself away from Lake Champlain!”). Following graduate school at the Yale University School of Nursing, she now works as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at Timber Lane Pediatrics in Burlington, VT, a practice co-owned by Sara Quayle, wife of #9135 Ollie Quayle.

She and her husband, #18952 Joel Cross, are thrilled to be welcoming their first future Dudleyite in July 2018! They love living in Burlington and frequent gatherings with Dudley and Kiniya family. Kari is grateful for the opportunity to serve as the first female CDA Vice President, and couldn’t be happier to share this role with her dear friend from Dudley days, #16119 Marlon Fisher.

Camp Dudley Foundation’s Newest Member #25014 Kathryn Brust Adams, Camp Dudley Foundation, Delmar, NY

K

ate’s career has focused on non-profit fundraising for education and conservation. She has worked in leadership roles at the Emma Willard School, The Nature Conservancy and is currently the Vice President for Institutional Advancement at The Sage Colleges which includes Russell Sage College for Women in Troy, NY. She grew up in Fayetteville, NY, attended St. Lawrence University and is a proud NOLS graduate. The family splits time between Delmar, NY and Limekiln Lake in the Central Adirondacks.

Kate’s brother #13099 Matt spent a summer at Dudley, and her Uncle #7446 John Brust and cousins #13143 Frederick and #14140 James are proud Dudley alumni as well. She and her husband Steve have two sons who are current Dudley campers – #23821 Jack, who is entering his senior summer at Camp and #24616 Mason, who will be

back for his Plebe year.

Both boys believe that the 3.5 weeks they spend at camp are the best weeks of their entire year.

Kate volunteers at a variety of organizations around the capital Kate Adams district and is thrilled to be joining the Camp Dudley Foundation. Says Kate, “I am excited to give back and be a part of the team whose mission is to make sure the camp is an option for the next generation of Dudley and Kiniya campers by working to make sure that it stays financially stable and continues to thrive”.

Dave was a camper in 1989, during Willie’s years, and has served in nearly every leadership role since. Camp has been the beneficiary of his quiet humor, his generous friendship, and his soul-level commitment to The Other Fellow First. Working closely with Dave in the CDA, I benefitted from his knowledge and attention to detail. I’ll miss him deeply as a collaborator, but know he’ll be close at hand. A

s temperatures started to drop in the Adirondacks, the Dudley Gap Program flocked south to The Bahamas for our final expedition.

The Dudley Gappers were joined by wonderful staff and alumni, including #18754 Connor Smith, #19524 Dawn Gay, and #14962 Josh Olcott. We spent a few exciting days at The Island School, where we learned about marine biology, sustainability, and farming in different environments. After freediving lessons, shark-tagging, and immersive work with The Island School’s sustainable systems, we were lucky enough to spend some time with our Community Partners at the Deep Creek Middle School, home to many Dudley and Kiniya alumni.

To kick off the second half of our expedition, Dudley alum and current Island School teacher #19130 Caleb Florence brought us to one of Eleuthera’s pristine beaches along the Atlantic coast, where we learned how to beach camp in this incredible setting. After

heading to the northern portion of the island, we stopped in to see our friends at Island Farm—an inspiring organic farm, owned and operated by the family of #23582 Sim Bethel. We also toured the brand new Centre for Ocean Research and Education with its founder, Dr. Owen O’Shea. This new research center empowers young people to get involved in ocean conservation and marine studies, alongside world-class scientists and explorers.

When our Bahamian expedition came to a close, we were sad to leave, but eager to return home to finish up our program here in Westport. For our closing ceremonies, the Gappers hosted a dinner for the community that supported us throughout the journey. The Gappers planned, welcomed, and cooked for nearly 40 people, and we could not have asked for a better send-off! Thanks to all that joined and supported us along the way.

CAMP KINIYA

Cubbies and Catamounts and Seniors, Oh My!

F

or the 2018 summer, Kiniya will formalize programming into three divisions. We are excited to announce the Cub, Catamount, and Senior Divisions for the very first time!

Historically, Kiniya has had as many as four divisions Juniors, Intermediates, Seniors, and Junior Counselors.

Campers have ranged in age from 7 to 17 years, and are now 9.5 to 15. The location of each division has also shifted over time. As we continue to look for ways to enhance the Kiniya experience, our divisions and program progression are key ingredients.

Most recently Kiniya has been operating in two divisions, Junior and Senior. With the hope of adding divisions in the future, we added an intermediate grouping of girls several years ago. This allowed our oldest Juniors and youngest Seniors to compete together athletically. This proved very successful for our program, and by formalizing this third division, our campers will no longer be bouncing between two divisions.

In future summers, our goal is to reintroduce Juniors to be our fourth and final division. From youngest

to oldest our four divisions will soon be Cubs, Cats, Juniors, and Seniors!

Although this is a big change in the way we define ourselves when we are at Camp it will not change who we are as a whole Kiniya community!

A 1970’s Camp brochure put it this way: “Kiniya is ‘different’ in the way it makes possible the separateness of its age groups. The point is, they are separate when they wish to be. It would be a mistake, however, to assume that each group considers itself apart from the rest. There is no camp with a higher single spirit or greater loyalty to the one entity, Kiniya, than is found here. The spaciousness of the broad, level fields makes possible the groupings we have shown throughout the booklet, but when the girls get together for their meals, theater, dances, evening games, riding events and for all the uncounted activities of camp, then there are no Seniors, Intermediates or Juniors, but only girls of Kiniya, feeling the fun and the thrill of being an active part of it all.”

What is a great Camp memory you have kept with you over the years? Playing the “B-Game” every morning at breakfast, “Bood borning bampers! Bho bants bancakes?” Upper Loft girls were always ready to have fun and be goofy. Even at 8 a.m! As well as Sammi Muther, who sat at a different table but would still shout across and participate with us.

What do you wish you could replicate from Camp in your awayfrom-Camp life?

I wish I had nightly vespers. The daily reflection and having a group you trust to share your thoughts and stories with is incredibly special. Also- rest hours would be “amaaaaazing.”

What do you remember learning at Camp for the first time? To always be ready for activities and set the attitude and tone you want. You couldn’t expect your campers to be excited if you weren’t excited, or to swim in cold water if you weren’t prepared to!

What advice would you share with a new camper or first-time leader starting this summer? Being mindful can be helpful for both the new camper and first-time leader! Really being present and in the moment will help you to fully enjoy your summer, stay relaxed, have fun, and keep those cherished memories.

great Camp memory you have kept with you over the years? There are so many; from enlightening vespers to getting covered in pudding and/or assorted condiments on the Witherbee stage (pro-tip: never try that with relish). As a Junior camper in Andrews, our favorite activity was “pro-pit wrestling.”

We’d give each other crazy names like The Spring 2018

Crayon and The Marker, and stage WWF style bouts in the high-jump pit. As a Cub leader, we ran an old school video game extravaganza where campers competed in arcade style events from the 90s (dodging deathballs at Duck Hunt, or trying to heat-up in NBA Jam, led in full boom-shaka-laka style by Matt “Thunder Dan” Perry.) The third and most important was meeting my amazing wife Monica, and leading a 2009 hike together. Though not much of an outdoorsman, I had a great group and time. (continued on page 26)

What do you wish you could replicate from Camp in your away-from-Camp life? The energy and enthusiasm with which everyone approached every situation. It was the ultimate “yes-and”. It rained and the plebes got the deathball court? On the spot indoor ganza! It rained for a whole half and the fields are wrecked? Turn the ultimate frisbee finals into a mudslide competition. I try to remember that on days when my calendar is totally packed and everything seems to be going wrong.

At the end of the search, she was granted an interview with #18104 Ben Walsh, who serves as the Captain of the Dudley Beach Volleyball Team in Chicago. Here’s the report Ben filed:

uring the Summer of 2017, as Dudley Campers enjoyed the 133rd season, 5 brave Chicago-dwelling fellows gathered each Monday night to serve all Dudleyites proud and achieve beach volleyball immortality. What do you remember learning at Camp for the first time? To laugh at myself. In those awkward middle school years I was self conscious and scared of looking stupid. It’s hard to stay that way when you’re smashing half a watermelon on your face, cobbling together a superhero costume out of the ponchos and loose shin guards in your trunk, or standing and doing the “Iggy Wiggy I’m a Piggy” cheer in Beckman Hall.

What advice would you share with a new camper or first-time leader starting this summer? Be yourself and go all out. Camp is a place where everyone will respect you for being yourself, especially if you’re a little bit weird but enthusiastic about it.

When are you coming back? Hopefully soon!

We just moved up to Burlington so I might need to drop in this summer and see if the Ramblers are still playing “Birdland.”

After playing college ball at Virginia Commonwealth University, I became a college coach in 1995 at my alma mater VCU for five years, then two years at West Virginia U., three years at Georgia State University, four years at Charlotte, four years at the University of Delaware, one year at Western Kentucky and one year at Boston College. My wife and I where talking last week about coming up to visit the Dudley. Matt saying, “I spent the past 10 months as the COO of Influencer Marketing startup in San Francisco. In my last week at that job, I was invited to represent my company at the “Stephen Curry Experience,” where Steph’s off-season trainers put us through an hour-long training session, mimicking the drills that Steph engages in to improve his agility and ball handling. Steph showed up to lead the group in shooting drills at the end, and I won the shooting contest (with Steph as my rebounder) to take home tickets to the Warrior game against the Bucks on March 29th.” Jordan played for Williams College, graduating in 2012, and coached basketball at Dudley during the summers. He was recognized with the Peavy Award in 2011.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE FROM KINIYA

The New Kiniya Lodge is Underway!

K

iniya's old theater named "The Lodge" has always been a special building on campus, more heavily used than any other program building at Camp. The home of our Theater Department, our entire camp (campers through staff) gather every Wednesday and Saturday Night for performances, and on Sunday Nights for Hymn Sing. This building is rich in history and tradition.

Our vision includes converting the current “Lodge” to a “Rough Arts” space to house our Woodworking and Set Design Majors. The rusticity and charm of the building is perfectly suited to a program of this nature. The space will undergo a basic renovation for this transformation. We plan to reinforce the floor, add new exterior siding, windows and doors to tighten the space. We will retain all historic aspects of the building including the cast signatures backstage, exposed beams and natural wood on the interior.

The new Lodge is well underway and positioned in the heart of Main Campus. This building replaced the Studio, and will provide increased seating capacity with tiered risers in the rear of the auditorium to accommodate our growing community. Ample storage and a separate enclosed music practice room with ample sunlight is on the second floor above the stage. In addition to the building itself, a brand new lighting and soundsystem will continue to enhance performances for years to come.

The exterior design includes a beautiful two-sided covered porch with stone fireplace for outdoor performances and another gathering space for Campers and alumni to sit by on chilly summer nights.

DUDLEY & KINIYA LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

2018 JL Weekends

"P

eople may not remember exactly what you did, or what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel” - Maya Angelou. These were the inspirational words that kicked off the 2018 JL Winter Leadership Weekend. The mission was to begin learning the leadership skills and responsibilities that JL’s must know. On Saturday, the JL’s ventured out to North Point in frigid temperatures. They participated in two low ropes challenges led by our very own #13758 Jake Rutter and #10555 Dave “Lang Fu” Langston. The focus was on communication and teamwork. After successful challenges, our JL’s headed back to Maclean Lodge for a delicious home-cooked meal prepared by #14962 Josh Olcott and #20005 Gail Coleman. The afternoon brought more adventures and learning. The JLs traveled into the snowy Stacy Wilderness for some personal reflection about critical moments in the training. The weekend concluded with a JL led chapel service and a conversation about giving and receiving feedback, important leadership skills. The anticipation and excitement was evident as they all began counting down the days to Dudley’s 134th summer.

O

ur 7th annual Kiniya JL weekend was one for the books. For the first time, our future leaders lodged in The Hank Leadership Barn on the Dudley campus. Upon arrival, with many hugs and joyous reunions, the girls began to learn their responsibilities and leadership skills for the summer. We spent Saturday morning focused on learning more about our new role as first time employees and how it will look different from our previous Camp experiences. In the afternoon, our young prospects ventured out into the glacial tundra for low ropes elements and team bonding activities. Full of Gail’s delicious foodies, our minds were once again put back to work. Just when we thought the adventures were over, Lang Fu delighted us with a final (blustery) zipline journey under the stars. During our time together, each JL had the opportunity to either lead a vesper, put on a council ring, or deliver a morning chapel talk. Overall, this weekend gave a sneak peak of summer 2018 and we can’t wait for future memories with our campers!

Father/Son Weekend Recap

I

n late February, a hearty group of fathers and sons gathered in Westport for a weekend of fellowship and fun in MacLean Lodge. This annual gathering has become a highlight for many families and included fathers and sons who will be coming to Camp for the first time as well as thoses who have spent many happy summers at Dudley already. Though there wasn’t much snow on the ground, the group managed to have plenty of fun.

Saturday started with a Chapel Talk from the one-andonly #12931 Scott Sylvester and then the group headed out to Main Campus for some games, a walk around

campus, and a few highly competitive rounds of father vs. son Bombardment in the Sommer Dome. The afternoon included trips to Stacy Brook and the maple sugaring operation at Dave Langston’s house. The day finished with a vesper led by Finn and Dennis Ryan.

Then on Sunday we had a quick and low-key morning chapel service before folks hit the road.

Throughout the weekend fathers, sons, and staff alike were treated to some great meals prepared by Josh Olcott. Thanks to everyone who made the effort to be there and join in the fun!

The Most Needed Gift!

ach year many conversations with our donors and friends take place around the question “Where is my gift most needed?” The best answer to that question is the “Annual Fund” because it has direct and immediate impact on current campers. “Gifts to the Annual Fund are constantly being applied to the area of greatest need,” says Dudley Director Matt Storey. “The vast majority of Annual Fund dollars are applied to our scholarship program because that is the area of greatest need. In fact, we have seen an increase in demand for scholarship grants this year. However, because Annual Fund gifts are so flexible, we may use them for campus maintenance or in support of the leadership development program as well,” continued Storey.

“We honor the donor’s intent with every gift we accept. For individuals that want to be part of helping with our Camps’ area of greatest need, the ideal gift is to the Annual Fund,” says Dave Langston, Development Director for Dudley and Kiniya.

We are a new farm, founded in 2014 by my father, Peter Treiber Sr., #10524, on the North Fork of Long Island. We started by planting several varieties of fruit trees and berries, but have since moved into growing diversified crops of vegetables and herbs as well as raising chickens and starting this coming May, beef cattle. We look at farming as a way to preserve the land, to work with nature to provide healthy food for ourselves and the community that surrounds us.

Baseball at Dudley — History from the Archives

I

t’s 1908 . . . #310 Chief Beckman’s first (of 40!) years as Dudley’s Director . . . The Chicago Cubs beat the Detroit Tigers and Ty Cobb to win the World Series, the last time the Cubs would do so for 108 years.

And Dudley’s 50-Year History reports that, “Next to Camp Dudley itself, baseball was the great love of Chief ’s life.” Not surprising that baseball became “the daily pastime” at Dudley.

In the early 1890s, a Dudley kitchenhand by the name of Hyson, who had played semi-pro ball with the Cuban Giants, challenged the Camp All-Stars to games against his “K Crew.” After the games, Hyson would hand out white-washed cookies to the winners.

Bats, balls and other baseball gear were expensive, so in 1898, the ever-inventive leaders introduced “BBBB,” a hybrid game using a basketball instead of baseball, and fists instead of bats. Infirmary visits rose dramatically!

Baseball remained central to the Dudley experience for the next 70 years, in no small part due to Beckman himself. Each afternoon, Chief could be found playing “pepper” on the Junior Diamond “before Swims.” Leading by example, he held down first base on a Dudley team and batted .454 in 1908.

On opening day each summer, the “Advance Party” team would play the “New Arrivals.” Locally, Westport had a town team that attracted Dudley leaders for games against Port Henry, Mineville and Vergennes.

Camp teams also played Westport boys teams. In one of those games, #5316 Eddie Card, playing for Westport, caught Chief ’s eye and was offered a scholarship

on the spot to “come and play at Dudley.” Chief knew talent when he saw it! Inter-camp games followed.

In 1928, Dudley’s “Club System” was introduced by Athletic Director #3887 Ken Hafner, as were almost daily baseball games between Avery, Eldridge, Post, MacLean, Wensley and Witherbee. Hafner would remain at Camp as A.D. from 1926-’70. Leaders and staff laid out baseball diamonds and maintained them.

Any year #6056 Bill Prior was at Camp, you could find him raking the batter’s box, pitcher’s mound and base areas long before breakfast.

From 1908 through the 1950s there were All-Star Games, Leaders Games, Oldsters vs. Youngsters games.

A major Centennial game was played in 1938 in honor of baseball’s founding in 1839, with Eddie Card on the mound for Avery. Throughout the 1940s, #5147 Mouse Phillips, a diminutive but clever pitcher, would get the first copy of the NY Daily News available at the office each morning, and then read the Major League results from the day to an eager crowd on the dining hall steps.

Bob Marshall took over as Director in 1949, and picked up where Chief left off, hitting “fungos” to campers on the Junior Diamond every afternoon.

A legendary pitching duel occurred in 1951, pitting #7927 Jon Clark for Post and #7857 Pete Maynard for MacLean on the Junior Diamond. With the whole camp watching, lunch was postponed until the extra innings battle concluded, with Clark’s team prevailing in the 15th. Clark had 30 strikeouts, Maynard 29.

Maynard went on to play center field for Duke. Clark captained the Tennis Team at Yale.

During this period, Sunday afternoon Leader’s baseball games were the prime attraction.

Campers would line the 1st and 3rd Baseball on the old Junior Diamond. base sidelines of the Senior Diamond to watch their Leader play.

Recalls #7441 Phil Bisselle, “It was a great time for baseball. #5407 Perry Lamerson was the most knowledgeable baseball guy at Camp, even though a Dodger fan. He was a great coach and umpire, and I was lucky to be in his cabin in 1949. #8304 Al Davis was another solid baseball guy, who played at Slippery Rock U. The best pitchers were #6921 Bob Dehlendorf, #7495 Dick Pastore, #8488 Bruce Gehrke, #7217 Colin Thompson and #7451 Mort Chute, who was also a fine catcher.

My Colgate University team played Princeton in baseball, where we ran into #7987 Dick Edie and the Belz brothers. Herman Belz pitched and they won 4-3. In the late fifties, Bruce Gehrke asked me to play for the Moriah town team against Witherbee. Johnny Podres, future Brooklyn Dodgers star, pitched for the opposition.

I couldn’t keep up with his curve and we lost.” #8252 Charlie Johnson III, who offered his warmup, batting-practice pitching services well into his ’60s recalled those Sunday games and added, “Lefty went six for seven against Lehigh in 1958, with two homers, two doubles, two singles and a ground out. Colgate won 18-14. Bill Prior played for Princeton and had a

tryout with the Giants. #8276 Charlie Updike got a hit off of the legendary Satchell Paige in the Wisconsin Summer League. #9379 Carl Belz played for Princeton and once hit a softball from home plate of the Junior Diamond down into the trees in front of MacLean . . . quite a shot.”

The early 1960s brought a surprise visit to the Dining Hall by Robin Roberts, the Phillies pitching ace, thanks to #5616 Eddie Card. #8070 Ben Nelson adds, “In 1970, Marshall’s last year, we were playing pepper, and I managed to hit Bob in the mouth with a line drive, unintentionally of course. It led to Bob’s one and only trip to the infirmary. I felt awful.”

Soon after (but not because of!) this, interest in baseball began to wane, and Leader’s baseball was replaced with softball. At the same time, Lacrosse emerged as “a game of the future,” in no small part due to its introduction in Long Island public high schools

by Messrs. Hafner and Gehrke. But, fond memories of “America’s Pastime” will not soon be forgotten at Camp.

News and Notes #4291 Fred Klein, Tuscon, AZ, reported that he plans on celebrating his 102nd birthday on April 25! Fred continues to enjoy good Fred Klein in June 2016 as he prepared health and good to retire from competitive swimming. He friends at his learned to swim at Swim Point during his home in Tucearly years at Camp. son. Fred speaks fondly of the very important influence that Chief Beckman and the motto, “The Other Fellow First” has had on his life. Fred was at Camp from 1928 -1934 and remembers being one of the first campers to live in Iroquois Lodge. #5834 John Tiebout, Princeton, NJ, and wife Patricia celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in November. John came to Camp in 1938. His father, #1123 John Sr., son #10427 John III, and grandson #18522 John IV all are Dudley alums . . . Hail to a four-generation Dudley family! And what a wonderful milestone! #7380 Craig Bristol, Bradford, VT, has relocated from 40+ years in Connecticut to enjoy his children, grandchildren and cross-country skiing. He is looking forward to his 75-year pin and says that “The Other Fellow First” is still in the forefront of his daily activities. Craig was on the Kitchen Staff in 1947 and a Leader in 1951. #8032 Gerrit White, Mahwah, NJ, continues to enjoy retirement while traveling extensively. In 2018, his wife Elizabeth will be joining him in retirement. They are looking forward to a healthy and bright future!

Gerrit was at Camp in the 1950s. #8258 Peter Norstrand, Jamaica Plain, MA, attended camp from 1951-1957. He writes that he is enjoying retirement, serving on the boards of three non-profit organizations and keeping active with training and tennis.

He remains very involved in veterans’ activities in California. #8599 Thomas Russell, Alexandria, VA, and his wife Judy are serving another mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the small but wonderful town of Scott City, KS. There they are teaching young adults and serving the local congregation. #9024 Peter Rhoads, Warner, NH, attended camp in the 1950s and ’60s. #9897 Peter “Larry” Gosline, Gloucester, MA, writes that he and his wife Connie have moved to be closer to their new grandson, Hudson Richardson Gosline, and two of their four children. #9919 John Hufnagel, lives in Owls Head, ME, with wife Jinx, back on the Maine Coast where he spent summers when he wasn’t at Dudley. Huff stays busy with the Georges River Land Trust. An added plus is that sons #13919 Steve and #146 19 Casey both live in Mid-Coast Maine. #10055 Drew Hatcher, Alexandria, VA, reports that he retired in 2010 after 35 years in the Office of Chief Counsel, Customs and Border Protection. “Now getting to spend lots of time with grandDrew Hatcher with granddaughter daughter Lily who Lily. is 18 months old.” It is hard to tell who is having more fun. Drew is already looking forward to Lily’s completion of the 4th grade and a future spot at Kiniya. #10436 Jerry Ardolino, Summerville, MA, shared a fun bit of Dudley advertising as he was preparing for a recent hospital visit.

Jerry writes, “Preparing for hip surgery on January 3rd. The hospital asked me to bring my walker with me to the Jerry’s “Dudley” walker! hospital and make sure it was marked with some sort of identification. What better?!” Jerry also reported that his recovery is going well and he hopes to be traveling without the walker before the CD News arrives in homes.

#10846 Bob Langston, Syracuse, NY, continues as pastor of the Onondaga Hill Presbyterian Church. Wrote Bob,- “We currently have nearly 400 teens coming to Syracuse June 24-30, from all over the country for a work camp to do home repairs for the needy, elderly and physically challenged people . . . and an awesome team helping to put it all together.” According to Bob, “We are partnering with local schools, churches, businesses and government offices to bring help to those in need in the city of Syracuse and surrounding areas. Homes and lives will be rebuilt, hope will be restored and relationships will grow and deepen as love and faith are shared in a concrete way. I can’t wait to see the change in our city and surrounding communities.” The program is organized by Bob’s church and Group Mission Trips in Loveland, CO. Ed. Note: Great job, Pastor Bob! #11886 Charlie Moore, Bronxville, NY, writes that he joined Stanford Management Company earlier this fall. He leads Stanford University’s global efforts in private equity, including its investments in buyouts, equity and venture capital. He will continue to be affiliated with Stanford Law School, serving as a Fellow of the Rock Center for Corporate Governance. He has served as the Champion International Professor in the Computer Science Department and David Kotz, Interim Provost at Dartas Associate Dean mouth College. of the faculty for the sciences. Kotz, whose research interests include computer security and privacy, computing in the field of health care, and wireless networks, frequently collaborates with faculty and students across the arts and sciences divisions, at the Geisel School of Medicine, Thayer School of Engineering, Tuck School of Business, and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

#126 89 Carl Koenig, Oxford, NY, was recognized by the New York State Wrestling Officials Association with the “Lou Pettinelli Memorial Award” in January.

The award was announced at the NYSPHSAA Dual Meet Tournament and Carl was further honored at the Section IV Central Committee Meeting. The award recognizes his dedicated service to High School Wres-

tling. Carl, who was at Camp from 1979-’89, ’91-’93 and ’03-’05, wrestled during college days at Oswego State. He taught and coached at Oxford Academy and Oxford Central School in wrestling, baseball and cross country. Carl began officiating in 1971 and has continued his involvement in wrestling. He has received many honors for his dedication to the sport, including being inducted into the Section IV Athletic Hall of Fame. Carl and his wife, #14589 Pat, live in Oxford, NY. #12938 Marc Klaus, checked in from Stockholm, Sweden, where he and his wife, Kerstin, have lived for many years. Wrote Marc, “Our daughter, Freddie, is now a sophomore at Skidmore and Emilie just started at KTH (Royal Institute of Technology) in Stockholm.”

Marc was at Camp in the 1980s. #13373 Jonathan Edwards, Heritage Pointe, Canada, who raced doubles luge at the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics, has written a book called, “An Athlete’s Guide to Winning in Life and Sports.” It is aimed at “athletes with big dreams and their parents, coaches, and organizations who support them.” A coach for over twenty-five years, Jon shares what he’s learned from some of the best coaches in the world.

His book, available on Amazon, encourages athletes with a comprehensive plan. Jon, who was a camper at Dudley in the 1980s, came back as an A-Hut Staff Member in 2016 along with his wife, #24473 Michelle, son #25373 Quinn, and daughter Makena. #13426 Ned Johnson, Washington, DC, has coauthored the book The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives with William Stixrud, Ph.D. It was released on February 13, 2018. #15937 Andrew Blanco, New York, NY, has put off writing an update to Dudley for far too long. He graduated with a Master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music in 2006 and is now a freelance musician in NYC. He frequently plays with Andrew Blanco and his family. the Metropolitan Opera, the New York Philharmonic and on Broadway. He is currently the percussionist and assistant conductor for “Hello Dolly.” He and his wife, Jennifer (Sims) Blanco were married in 2013 and welcomed their son, Alexander Robert Blanco, into the world on February 13, 2015. They hope to send him to Dudley one day. #16 119 Marlon Fisher, Burlington, VT, recently started a new job with the Howard Center in Chittenden County, VT. Marlon is undergoing additional training as an outreach specialist, who will work closely with mental health agencies and area police departments in responding to situations where individuals are in a mental health crisis. Marlon reports that he is excited for the new challenge and expects to be in training through May.

According to the Sun Community News, “He made his World Cup skiing debut in 2006 and has raced full-time on the ski tour since 2008.” Weibrecht won the Super-G bronze medal in the 2010 Vancouver, Canada, games and the 2014 silver in Sochi Russia. Nicknamed “Warhorse,” he began skiing on Whiteface Mountain. #176 54 David “Fitzy” Fitzpatrick, Rochester, NY, writes that he is enjoying the Camp Dudley maple syrup as well as his new location in Rochester. Sophie graduated Amherst College in 2017 and received a Projects for Peace Fellowship based on her grant proposal: “Stepping off the Veranda: Promoting Greater Social Engagement for American Study Abroad Students.” Her initial goal was to better understand the challenges U.S. study abroad students face when integrating into local culture after first

Sophie wrote, “John Fitzgerald Kennedy’s definition of peace resonates strongly. He said, ‘Peace is a daily, Sophie Nash and Marnie McDonagh a weekly, a monthly process, gradually changing opinions, slowly eroding old barriers, quietly building new structures.’ My focus on building intercultural friendships addresses peace in this very manner. The process of forming and nurturing a friendship entails acknowledging prejudices, changing opinions, and slowly forming bonds born from shared concern and understanding for another. This project serves as a starting point to reviving authentic engagement in study abroad programs.” Sophie is currently serving as the International Resident Assistant for Augsburg University’s Center for Global Education and Experience in Cuernavaca, Mexico. #22055 Charlie Widing, Brookline, MA, is a senior at Tabor Academy.

Schmidt scholarship fund. The boys worked with Positive Tracks, which is a national youth development organization that helps young people age 23 and under get active and give back. Braxton and Tristan managed a super Kickball Tournament that involved 39 people. The resulting donation, with Positive Tracks matching gift, was $5,986.14! What a terrific effort! Congratulations and thank you, Braxton and Tristan.

Obituaries #56 16 Edgar “Eddie” Card, 96, passed away February 13, 2018, in Temple

Terrace, FL. He was born September 22, 1921, and grew up in Westport, NY. When Camp Director Chief Beckman, a baseball enthusiast, spotted Eddie as a promising young local boy (and athlete!), he offered him a scholarship to Dudley. Eddie came as a camper in 1937 and was a Leader in 1942. He served on the Dudley Board of Managers from 1975-1980 and was awarded Camp’s highest recognition, the “CDA Man of the Year” in 1987. A 1939 graduate of Westport Central High School, he attended Green Mountain Junior College (1942), Middlebury College’s Naval Program (1944), and received a B.S. from the University of New Hampshire (1945). He played Varsity Football, Basketball and Baseball. He earned an M.S. in Education Administration from Syracuse University (1950) where he served as Faculty Advisor for the Freshman Football Team. He was an Athletic Specialist in the United States Navy (1942 – 1946). He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers Southeastern League in 1945. His professional career started in education where he was Assistant Principal, Director of Guidance, and Director of Athletics at Westport Central School (1946-1962) Westport, and Supervising Principal, Elizabethtown/ Lewis Central School, Elizabethtown, NY (1962-1968). In 1968 he moved to Tampa with Pepin Distributing Company, serving as Public Relations Director, General Manager, VP and Executive VP. He was deeply involved in the local sports scene and a Charter and Board Member of the Gold Shield Foundation. He served many boards too numerous to mention.

Grandsons #21216 Matthew and #18267 Brooks Minford, #19242 Michael and #18830 Christopher Card then shared their grandfather’s stories, lessons learned, and his great willingness to listen and help them and others. #14866 James Mayo opened and closed the beautiful service with “Amazing Grace” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

Eddie’s great loves were his wife Joan, his faith, family, friends, music, sports, and his beloved Camp Dudley. He lived every day of his 96 years with humility, passion, and the desire to make each and every life he touched a better one.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Joan, and daughter Kimberly (Peter) Minford, and his grandsons (above). He was predeceased by his son, #9943 Kevin.

#7480 William T. Knowles, 82, of Brunswick,

ME, died September 12, 2017.

He was born January 24, 1935 in Orange, NJ, and raised in Essex Fells, NJ. Bill first arrived at Dudley in 1947 and worked his way up to the leadership ranks in 1954. He graduated from William T. Knowles Grover Cleveland High School and in 1957 from Colgate University, where he later served as a Trustee. In 1958 he married Elizabeth Lunt, honeymooning at the Stables Inn in Westport. His career was in commercial banking in New York City, with Bankers Trust

Eddie Card At his Memorial Service, longtime friend #7987 Dr. Dick Edie said: “When I first met Dudley camper #5616 in Westport, NY, many years ago, I knew that this was a special person. Eddie lived by the Dudley motto ‘The Other Fellow First’ and on numerous occasions he told me that every day he tried to do something nice for, or to help, someone. To the end he always was compassionate and looking out for ‘the other fellow.’”

Mr. Knowles was involved in a variety of community activities including, in Montclair, NJ, where he lived for 34 years, on the Zoning Board of Adjustment, the American Red Cross, Mountainside Hospital, and the Mount Hebron Cemetery Association, and the Union Congregational Church. In New York he served the Regional Plan Association, Carnegie Hall, United Way and Mutual of America Life Insurance Company. In Maine, at First Parish Church in Brunswick, Bangor Theological Seminary, the Humanities Council and Maine Center for Economic Policy. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth.

Obituaries #7573 Louis A. Wagner, Jr. passed away in November

2017 in Williamsburg, VA. Lou was born and raised in Garden City, NY, and attended Garden City schools. He was at Camp in 1947 and 1950. His father #2197 Louis Sr. came to camp in 1913 Louis A. Wagner and brother #5337 Alan also attended Camp. Lou attended the University of North Carolina before joining the W.T. Grant Company in New York and then the U.S. Postal Service on Long Island. But his true passion was the fire service. He joined the Garden City Fire Department in 1957 assigned to the Chemical Company. In 1961 Lou was hired by the Garden City Headquarters Company and held a variety of key positions. Lou was an active member of the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City. Lou also found time to work for American Express in their cardholder Membership Applications Division. In retirement, Lou relocated to Colonial Williamsburg, VA, in 1999 and was a member of Grace Church in Yorktown.

#10812 Craig M. Johnson Jr., 59, Westport,

NY passed away on March 3, 2018.

He was born in Harrisburg, PA, April 17, 1958 son of the late #6582 Craig M. and Craig Johnson, on his drums.

Anne (Sherman) Johnson, Sr. He was a natural athlete and excelled in soccer and horsemanship at a young age. He attended Westport Central Schools and worked for Bessboro Builders for a time. Craig was at Camp from 1969-’72, and was remembered by his former assistant coach Mark Davenport as “a great camper and an integral part of Team Wensley in the summer of ‘72. A very good baseball player, Craig was also the kid you wanted on your hike for his enthusiasm and vigor.”

Craig was a devoted Christian and student of the Bible. He was also an exceptionally talented drummer.

Craig played with several local bands and delighted in

taking part in the musical productions at the Westport Depot Theatre. He often practiced in Witherbee Hall during the off season. He enjoyed playing paddle tennis regularly with a Westport group. Craig, a warm and gentle soul is survived by his wife Tammy Johnson of Westport, stepfather Dr. Charles Moisan of Elizabethtown, sister Beth Neufer (Rob) of Indiana, brother Scott Johnson (Sarah) of Connecticut, half sister Jennifer Johnson Luby as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and stepsisters. Craig was the first of the third generation campers of the #4019 Berkeley Johnson, Sr., family.

#11344 Robert Allen Nichols died on May 28, 2017,

at age 54 in Ossining, NY. Rob attended Camp from 1973-’76 and then during 1978 as a JL. His brothers #11693 Gregory and #12099 Douglas are also Alumni.

Rob’s son #19844 Andrew, was at Camp from 2007- 2009. He Robert Allen Nichols graduated from Briarcliff High School in 1980 and with a BS in Civil Engineering from Bucknell University in 1984 where he met his wife, Catherine. He was Senior Vice President of Estimating for Skanska USA. Rob was a hard worker who enjoyed sports, music, cooking, and doing jigsaw puzzles. His greatest passion in life was spending time with his family. He was a devoted husband and father who approached life with great passion, determination and love. Rob is survived by his wife of 28 years, Catherine; sons Patrick and Andrew; and daughter Mary. He is also survived by his parents Myrtle and Allen Nichols; brother Gregory Nichols (Noelle); brother Douglas Nichols; and a wonderful extended family with multiple siblings-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

Dr. Peter N. Reusswig

School in 1978 and Amherst College in 1982. He completed his medical training at New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY, his internship in Internal Medicine at Cornell’s New York Hospital, and his Anesthesiology Residency and Pain Management training at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. Peter then served on active duty as Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at Long Beach Naval Hospital. He married Emy Beatriz Eiben in 1994 and settled in Golden, CO, where he helped to develop the Pain Center at St. Anthony North Hospital. Peter established Colorado Pain Management in 1996. His dynamic and strong work ethic was the foundation to his success. Peter loved traveling with his family and friends around the world and to his Vail, CO home to golf and ski the back bowls. He also loved music, performing with bands at local and Amherst reunions. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Emy, and his two sons, #22096 Tyler and #22496 Blake, his mother, Nancy Lane Reusswig, his uncle Leman Lane, his sister Cynthia Lane Scheffler (Guy), his brother #11796 David Lee Reusswig (Liz), his nephews: #11727 Andrew, #19277 Michael and #21727 Nicholas Scheffler, and his nieces: #23296 Emily and #23396 Sophie Reusswig. Peter is predeceased by his father, #7277 William Norton (“Bombsight”) Reusswig and his grand-uncle, #2455 Bill Reusswig, who attended Dudley in the 1920s and was the first of now four Reusswig generations to attend Dudley. Peter was honored to be affiliated with Camp Dudley.

#17872 Irving “Pee Wee” Borden,

71, died November 25, 2017 .

He was born December 6, 1945, in “Pee Wee” Borden with his family Elizabethtown, NY, and worked at Dudley in Maintenance from 1999-2004. Besides his parents, Alec and Viviana (DeGroff ), he was predeceased by his wife Linda (Hopkins) Borden, his wife of 40 years, who passed away in 2010, his twin brother Irwin, two brothers, Robert and Alan; and sisters, Beverly McGee, Sharon

Tefoe and Joyce Lawrence. He is survived by his son Gil Ho who lives in Colorado, his brother Barry of Lake Placid, and his Aunt Gladys Mauran and Uncle Dennie DeGroff and several nieces and nephews.

on February 5, 2018 at the age of 91. She was the mother of Board Chairman #10643 Matt Quigley and #11184 Peter Quigley and Amy Riley, and was preceded in death by her eldest son Cyrus in 1984.

Amy was born in Great Neck, NY, graduated from Brearley and Smith College in 1948. She taught music and dance in Kentucky. She married Peter Quigley in 1951, moving to Pittsburgh and then Wilton, CT, where she worked in real estate and then with the A.T. Cross Company, retiring in her mid 80’s. She enjoyed tennis, concerts, classes and books, discussing ideas with her friends and spending time in her garden. In addition to her children and their spouses (Nina, Tim, Nancy), she leaves nine grandchildren.

Dr. William Stevens passed away peacefully at

home in Weston, CT, on November 19, 2017. Dr. Stevens was the father of past Board Member #11373 Michael, #13293 Kristen Stevens, Heather Stevens and #13303 Stephanie Stevens. Born in Danbury, CT, in 1924, he graduated from Danbury High School, served in the U.S. Navy during WW II and returned to graduate from Providence College, Notre Dame and with a medical degree from NY Medical College in 1955. Following his residency at the U. of Minnesota, Dr. Stevens practiced radiology in Syracuse, NY, and West Palm Beach, FL. He is survived by his wife, Sallie M. Stevens, his son Michael and spouse Leila Garrett-Stevens, and his three daughters, as well as seven grandchildren.

Butler II in 1953 and settled in Ridgewood where she served as Deputy Mayor and Council member from 1982-86. She was awarded the Mayor’s Award of Excellence for her many volunteer contributions. She was predeceased by her husband in 2004. In addition to her three chidren and their spouses (Sarah, #22041 Kim and Tom), Carrie is survived by seven grandchildren.

Frederick William “Bill” Drummond Jr.,

87, passed away at the Essex Center, Elizabethtown, NY, on December 11, 2017 with his daughter, Gay, by his side. He was born in Lewis on February 21, 1930, graduated from Elizabethtown-Lewis School, 1948 and joined the US Marine Corps. He was stationed in Portsmouth, NH, and Washington, DC. Bill was a barber for forty years, cutting hair at Ernie’s Barber Shop, Camp Dudley and the Au Sable Club in St. Huberts. Bill was a pilot, prepared taxes, served as Essex Town Supervisor and as an Assessor.

He and his wife Grace refurbished the Essex Inn before building a home in Essex, NY. He married Jane Scriver in April 1950 and had three children; Gay (Rick) Olcott, Timothy Drummond, Beth (Ed)

Marvin; ten grandchildren; seven great grandchildren, a step daughter, Carolyn Cowin of Plattsburgh; a step grandson and a step great granddaughter, and a step son-in -law, Paul Kirby, many nieces and nephews.

Rita Toth Guffey, 82, passed away Friday, February

9, 2018 in Nebo, NC. She was the mother of Dudley’s Business Manager, #17600 Fred Guffey. Born in Norristown, PA on February 13, 1935, she was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and had retired as treasurer/secretary. She assisted in the food pantry, and was a member of the choir. Rita enjoyed volunteering with the American Red Cross and loved to read and crochet. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Fred Guffey; and one brother, Thomas B. Toth. She leaves six children, Elizabeth Ann “Beth” Ehrhart (Joseph) of Spring City, Pennsylvania, Fred Guffey (Jan) of Mineville, New York, William Guffey (Cheryl) of Royersford, Pennsylvania, Andrea Guffey of Nebo, NC, Sandra Guffey of High Point, NC, and Patricia Webb (Kevin) of Advance, NC; one brother Francis Toth; seven grandchildren, Megan, Winter, “AJ,” Amanda, Elliott, Hannah and Sherrilynn; and four great grandchildren, Chase, Kylie, Grayson and Cecelia. She is also survived by two special cousins, John and James Miller; and two special friends, June Matzik and Mary Rossi.

A Chapel Talk by #22088 Chandler Ryan

T

he phrase, “Ya Gotta Wanna” is something I heard the very first week I was ever at camp.

My team was down on Junior beach, and the lake was rough. I was afraid of lakes back then since I’d never spent much time in them, and I wasn’t confident in my paddling ability. No part of me wanted to go out on that lake. I asked if I could sit on the beach with a girl who was injured, and there I sat as my teammates chose paddles and pushed off. When my leader, Woj, (#21479 Rebecca Wojciechowicz) saw me sitting on the beach for no reason, she looked straight at me and said, “Chandler, Ya Gotta Wanna.” It was one of the phrases that hung on colorful signs in our cabin, and I hadn’t given it much thought.

Woj explained that at camp I was expected to try new things and participate as much as I could, even if that made me a little uncomfortable or nervous. In that moment, I really, truly, did not wanna, and I didn’t understand why I should wanna.

In the weeks at camp that followed, I began to understand. Woj was helping me see that by sitting

out in situations of discomfort, I was getting in my own way.

“Ya Gotta Wanna” still runs through my head frequently, in all sorts of situations. For me it’s a personal challenge to myself toward an attitude of openness and bravery. It helps me get past momentary discomfort and see beyond, to the possible good or growth that could come out of whatever I’m pushing myself to do.

Going on NOLS my Aide summer was a huge “Ya Gotta Wanna” for me, and one with the biggest payoff, a turning point in my life.

I have “Ya Gotta Wanna-ed” my way into beautiful mountains, new schools, seas of faces I didn’t know, my very own cabin here at camp, a new position in a new department, a wild job leading my peers at school, and so many other things that make me who I am. We are the things that challenge, and have challenged us, and in order to become the truest versions of ourselves, we have to take that deep breath, acknowledge our fear, and head forwards anyway.

#22088 Chandler Ryan, once afraid of the woods, served as the co-director of Kiniya hikes and trips during the summer of 2017 and attends Bates College.
