From the Editor: More Than a Place I want to welcome all members of the Camp Dudley community to a special edition of the Dudley Doings for the summer of 2020. I am not writing this from the shores of lake champlain, but I do feel as though I’m there… Why? Because for the past three weeks I have been emailing, calling, texting and facebooking a wide array of people from our community and asking each of them a simple question: ‘Can you share something about Dudley with me?’.

My reward for asking this one question was to get daily reminders of how much Dudley means to so many people. It was… awesome. Every day, I would go to my computer and read about Camp, and it would transport me there for a few minutes… and that made me so happy. That was because, without

a shadow of a doubt, Camp Dudley is more than a place. It is the people, it is the memories, it is the motto, it is the knowledge that Dudley has shown you how you can be the best of yourself.

I invite you to immerse yourself in this special edition of the DD and use it as a mechanism to transport yourself to a cabin, team, trip or show of the past. To remember that moment at Brodie, at the lake, on the range, at the glenn, at North Point or on main campus when you felt joy and thanks and part of a never-ending fellowship. You may not know many of the writers of these articles, but that shouldn’t matter.

Their memories will hopefully resonate with you and remind you of your own experiences at Camp. Thanks to everyone who took the time to share and I wish you all a safe and happy rest of the summer!

Editors Note: I enjoy looking through the Last Whistle when it comes out in the winter. I look at many of the photos and think: ‘What is the story behind this scene?’ I imagine fantastical adventures, or heart-warming stories of friendship, or a series of random events that lead to a hilarious and unforgetable situation. This article tells the extraordinary story behind a seemingly ordinary image. I hope that it inspires you to open up your old Last Whistles, look again at the photos and use them to remember the amazing things that happened at camp that summer.

The Bear

I want to tell you guys about a hike we were on back in 2018, when we went face to face with a strawberry crazed bear!

We’re on our hike, and we get to our campsite. We unpack and set up in our lean-tos and head down to the river to relax. After about an hour, we see it on the other side of the river: a full grown Black Bear, walking right across. We all freeze, take a dudley pic, freeze again and the bear finally makes its way back into the forest...or so we thought.

animal stops us in our tracks. The bear was trying to steal our stuff! We used what we learned at camp to scare the bear away, and we made a “bear proof” barricade to protect us for the night and the hike continued as planned. When we got back to camp safely, we emptied

our bags to see what snacks the bear was really after. We only found one STRAWBERRY scented chapstick and nothing else.

Moral of the story: bears have chapped lips on hikes too.

Later on I decide to go up to our campsite with my co-leader to grab some supplies to make a fire, and halfway up the trail we hear metal and plastic rustling. We think one of the boys came up another way to grab something, so we keep walking until the sight of a 4 legged July, 2020 Dudley Doings 3

A Week Without Camp

This is the part where we normally review the week ahead. Instead, here is a weekly schedule of how you can capture the true spirit of camp from the comfort of your own home!

Sunday 1. Like every Sunday at camp, enjoy an extra hour of sleep!

2. Hold a staff meeting with just yourself to review the week ahead and plan your schedule.

3. Take a shower (two push only, others need to get in!) and put on your blue blazer for chapel. Find a nice patch of grass in your lawn, set up your crazy creek and recite your favorite Pete Allen chapel talk.

4. A Sunday Talk with your dog gives you time to review their goals like “passing their dog swim test” or “make three dog friends this summer” 5. Brass quartet is a little harder when it’s just you playing all the parts to taps, but with a little practice you’ll get the hang of it!

Monday 1. There’s nothing like donuts on a Monday morning...swing

by Dunkin’ and treat yourself!

2. Go to the “Dudley Archives” and take a little trip through some old Last Whistles! Maybe write a letter to a friend?

3. Give yourself an hour of choice time but be sure to travel with a buddy.

4. Turn on that grill for a Monday night BBQ (ask an adult for help)! Be sure to crank those Frank Sinatra classics!

Thursday 1. Today you have a day hike. Pack extra “GORP” and make sure to bring extra socks in case yours get wet. You don’t want to slow down the hike to deal with a HOT SPOT! 2. You can play cards for rest period today as long as you are quiet. If you wake up your leader, everyone is going back to their own bunk.

3. Be sure to tune in to the live stream of a James Mayo hymn sing!

Friday 1. Stuff your pillow case with all your clothes because you have an overnight, my friend!

2. First you are going to the challenge course. See if you can climb from one end of the room to another on the furniture without touching the floor (because it’s lava). You should be wearing long pants for this.

Tuesday 1. You only have ten hours to plan and build an Extravaganza. Write a detailed proposal to submit to your parents by lunch and pray it doesn’t rain. If it rains you can watch a movie only if it’s “The Goonies”.

2. It’s 5:30 and you were just asked to play a song and tell a story at Council Ring at 7:00. Better get to work!

Wednesday 1. You have a track meet to start the day. Take a big sharpie and write “100 meter dash” on your forearm so you don’t forget.

2. Extended choice time! You can go practice your short game on the “Par Three Course” outside but watch out for those windows!

3. Tonight is a Wednesday Night Show. You get to put on a costume and show off your awesome dance moves! Let’s keep it under a minute though.

‘Floor is Lava’ Team Majors in 2021?

Saturday 1. You just found that summer reading book you were supposed to be working on. Read “To Kill A Mockingbird” in its entirety.

2. Swim Meet today! Grab an inner tube and sit in your bath tub. Don’t hang on the ropes!

3. Tonight, you are starring in Big Show but you don’t know any of your lines. Find clever props in your house to tape copies of the script to and see if anyone notices you reading from them. Hint: the inside of your hat is a great place to start.

Follow this strict schedule and you will be living the other fellow first in no time! In place of a nightly vesper, take time to reflect on your favorite camp experiences with friends and family.

Try Hope!

Here’s a quick story: He watched his little brother work for more than an hour, building an elaborate puzzle machine on the basement floor.

The kid carefully spaced dominoes and Lego parts in long pathways and curves, over and around each other. The boy never said a word, and his brother watched quietly, amazed by the patience and focus.

It seemed that the final goal was to get the last domino to release one marble, which would have to roll down the rough road of a Lego trench and fall through the net of a small hoop. It also seemed impossible.

When he was done the boy stood up and looked at his older brother--expecting him to say something.

“Do you think it will work?” the older brother asked.

There had been no preliminary tests or trials with shorter sections. There would be just one try. Success or not would be known instantly.

“I hope so,” the boy said. And he stood there, waiting.

His older brother smiled, stood up, and simply said, “Well, give it a try.”

The boy knelt down in front of the very first domino. His older

brother could see him take a deep breath, and then with a flick of a finger the first line of dominoes was falling.

“Hope” is a funny, fragile, powerful thing. These days, this Summer, lots of us are “hoping” that the world will get better.

We are hoping, for instance, that a vaccine will be found for Covid-19. We are hoping that, finally, people will recognize that every single human person, of every color and race and family and gender, will be seen as someone with infinite value-and beauty. We are hoping that next Summer we can all meet in Westport, at Camp. Maybe we are hoping for baseball season or for enough food and clean water for everyone on the planet. Maybe we are hoping for a job, or to go to college--or even to fall in love.

That’s a lot of hope. And sometimes it’s really hard to hope. Sometimes we lose hope. Sometimes we feel that there is no reason to hope at all.

But hope is still right there. Spread out on the basement floor in front of us. Hope is what happens when we get an idea and then we just try. Hope is not sitting and waiting, it’s trying.

It’s knocking over the first domino to see if what we were hoping for could happen. Hope is living “the other fellow first” even if we’re not at Camp. Hope is trying. And trying again.

What are you hoping for right now? Does it seem impossible?

Well never mind. Just give it a try and see what happens.

Bring It In! - The Origin Story

I had the thrill to run Cub/Plebe Baseball majors for nearly 15 years. Many of my Dudley mentors growing up were folks who ran baseball majors and, in many ways, that’s all I really wanted to do at camp. That field, the tradition of baseball, the sounds of Bill Prior echoing throughout the diamond...this was Dudley.

Around 2004 we were wrapping up majors on a picture perfect Wednesday afternoon and the whole major decided we were going to run down to the lake and jump in with all of our clothes on...why not?! However, before we did we had to close with our traditional “bring it in” where we would gather everyone from Cub/Plebe baseball majors into the outfield and bring it in for a cheer, a song, a dance, a sort of celebration of a job well done!

Everyone would begin by shouting out their name and then the cheer would start. On this particular day the lacrosse majors had been let out early and saw us gathering in the middle of the field when one camper turned to me and said, “Hey Ryan, can my friends bring it in with us?!” Well, of course! In fact, this is camp and everyone should bring it in and celebrate a fun afternoon before jumping into the lake!

So, the baseball majors (coaches and campers), began shouting to anyone in sight to “bring it in!” At first campers, leaders and staff members from Witherbee to Brodie, Beckman Hall to the main office, looked confused, hesitant, but curious. With 6 Dudley Doings July, 2020

enough encouraging and wonderment, people began pouring out of buildings, running from fields, joining the ever-growing circle. What began as a group of younger baseball majors quickly turned into over 150 members of the Dudley community.

And so, we had baseball majors twice a week and every time we ended campers, leaders, staff members and just about anyone in sight would run into the circle. At the start of the second half it had grown to be part of the Dudley lore and it was suggested that we begin opening day of the second half by having the whole camp “bring it in” on day one. We did and it was spectacular!

At the end of my last summer at Dudley, I was the Development Director, and I had the opportunity to give a mass vesper to the junior division on gratefulness. I asked a few campers, spontaneously, to stand up and on the spot say what they are grateful for at this very moment. Having not a clue of my history with this, a young man stood up and said, “I’m grateful for bring it in...it reminds me every week that we are so much more than a camp. We are a family here at Dudley.” He went on to say, “you know, like we compete, and then we bring it in and hug it out!” That’s how we ended the vesper. I walked back to the main office holding back tears and immediately messaged the coaches who helped start this trend with me many years earlier and just wrote: “we brought it in during vespers... I guess this is more than a post baseball cheer now.”

Treasure Island

I was in one or two plays in Middle School and High School and it felt like we spent the whole year rehearsing for those. At Dudley, we have about a week – sometimes a bit more, sometimes less. The plays are usually a bit shorter but sometimes, like the changeover show or (this may surprise you) The Big Show, they are full, normal, you-could-spend-months-preparing-for-this length. It goes well a lot of the time but not every time.

The changeover show was Treasure Island. Pirates, treasure, eye patches, and a very well rehearsed fight scene. I know that there was a choreographed sword fight. Someone had done sword fighting in plays outside of camp and had offered to teach a few routines to some people. I think there was a part in the fight where someone was swinging on ropes. If not, there should have been. That was the kind of sword fight we were going for.

We went on with the normal schedule, almost as if there was no play at all; games on main campus, rest period. Choice times we’d rehearse (we had to make sure the fight scene was ready).

The occasional rest period was spent learning lines, sometimes in Witherbee, sometimes just outside of our cabins so that we wouldn’t break the quiet. We focused on the lines at the start of the play because those felt the most important. The start of the play is very exciting. We wanted to get that right. That and the fight scene. And then it was Saturday.

The fight scene happens. It starts perfectly. I think everyone on stage is very pleased with themselves and the pirates who are stabbed do a very good job dying. At a certain point, I’m not sure what I am supposed to do. Other people seem equally confused. I think someone was supposed to say a line that would cause us all to leave the stage? Some of the good guys who are running out of bad guys to duel consider fighting each other.

A few of the dead pirates stand back up to help out the good guys who are looking for someone to fight. Considering the number of stab wounds everyone has received at this point the energy on stage is still fairly high.

Here’s the thing: maybe I remember it wrong. Maybe I’m the only one who didn’t know their lines or what was going on. That would not surprise me at all. I don’t know things on a daily basis. But the way I remember it there was a moment when the cast knew things were not going according to plan and there was so much of the play left. Eventually in that sword fight, someone said some line and eventually someone left the stage and others followed, leaving more or less the right amount of people to continue the next scene. Or the best attempt at a next scene.

And I slowly accepted that I knew very little of my lines. (I should also note here that this was not the first time this had happened to me at camp.)

If that moment had happened in a play in nearly any other place it might have happened differently. But we were at Dudley, and we wanted to put on a good show for our friends and cabinmates and our friends and cabinmates wanted to see us succeed on stage. With the amount of support that we felt for each other on stage and from the audience, the feeling of not knowing what to do next wasn’t nearly as bad. And with that sense of support, and the bits and pieces of the script we could help each other with, and a little bit of making things up on the spot, we finished the show.

The show starts. It seems to be going smoothly. Some actors have missed some cues but overall the story is kind of understandable to the audience which, I believe, is very important to having good show.

Would the audience have enjoyed it more if everyone knew all of their lines? Maybe.

Had the audience ever seen a sword fight on stage quite like that?

Maybe not.

Being in the show meant I’d skip the usual ritual of changing into collared shirts and out of athletic shorts. And as the Rhythm Ramblers started to play, I thought, I know my first lines. And a sword fight.

When the Plebe Leaders Stalled For Time...

“My country, ‘tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, Of thee I sing; Land where my fathers died, Land of the pilgrims’ pride, From ev’ry mountainside Let freedom ring!”

The D-heads were on a day off. This is not to say that the leaders who were in charge would ever make or encounter any scheduling errors, but a very important announcement had to be given to the plebes mustered before the MOP. And that announcement, which was very important indeed, would be made immediately following a quick word from Jonah Florence.

Jonah Florence wanted to point out some very very important information regarding team sports. This was of course a subject near and dear to the hearts and minds of potentially every camper, JL, and AL sitting attentively before Mr. Florence and the MOP. All eyes were on Jonah, and Jonah was aware of this.

Sure a camper here picked absent-mindedly at the grass and another camper stared into the sun, but the rest of the crowd gave Jonah their full attention. We waited in silence, cautiously holding our collective breath, in eager anticipation of the unknown becoming known. Jonah felt the magnitude of this moment - of his role as the bearer of wisdom. He was aware of his place in the machine of life. He was not aware, however, that Chris Tozzi had a thrilling and timely anecdote, which he would forever regret keeping to himself and felt that if ever there was a moment to speak his mind, that moment was now.

So the audience would have to continue to sit attentively for just a bit longer to hear Jonah’s very very important word on team sports.

After everyone had a chance to warm up their vocal chords, Jack told the crowd to take a seat, and to remember how important it is to celebrate America for all of its good, to take responsibility for all of its bad, and to recognize the burden we carry as human beings first and foremost - the burden of brotherhood, the burden of sisterhood, the burdens of our neighbors which we shoulder with pride as our own! To stand up for each other! To stand up for America! To face the flag! “I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” Beautiful! And now that we all remember what it means to be an American on this day, if I’m understanding correctly Guillaume Jacquemont would like to chime in on a matter which is both pertinent and close to home before he forgets. Guillaume take it away!

Chris Tozzi - as we all know - was a leader, a coach, a friend, a son, and some might even call him family. And the thing about family is: you don’t choose your family, they choose you.

Someone once said, “a family is like a calling. And a life without a calling is like a life without a family.” And speaking of family, this guy - whom I have the pleasure of introducing (if you don’t know him already) - is like family to me, so everyone let’s give it up for Jack Merrifield! Jack Merrifield everybody!

But before Guillaume could take it away, Max Patterson, Aidan Moran, Luke Torpie, David Hanke, and Kevin Longo launched into an enthusiastic performance of “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Jouney. Anyone who knew the words was encouraged to join along (implicitly). The MOP was a stage and the world was watching. And the world was waiting - waiting on pins and needles. But most of all the world was listening to an excellent acapella rendition of a classic rock anthem.

But as much as we love Jack - first and foremost, we love our country. Our nation. One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. As a matter of fact, why don’t we all stand up and face the flag still hanging from the porch of Witherbee following the Fourth of July celebrations. Please remove your caps. “I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

And why don’t we all remain standing and ride this patriotic momentum right into a tune...

Guillaume sang in French, the tongue of his motherland (and a romantic tongue indeed, and a romantic motherland indeed!) and the additional languages sung in unison only served to enhance the beauty of what was once Journey’s but now belonged to us all.

“Gratitude” Has a Nice Ring To It

Like a prophecy fulfilled, countless Chapel talks and vespers about camp’s supernatural ability to foster community suddenly made personal sense. I was no philosopher my Senior summer—and I’m certainly not one now—but in one evening, my characteristic unease was replaced with uncharacteristic clarity, and then…Tinnitus.

Then, I noticed bubble wrap sprawled on our perpetually dirty Yurt floor, probably discarded from a cabin-mate’s parental care-package. Those bubbles were calling my name. How could I not pop them. I grabbed the sheet quickly, before anyone else stole its precious popping potential. Keeping my eyes fixed on whoever was speaking, I felt around for a solid bubble to pop on the sheet. POP! What a thrill. POP! I’d better pop the whole sheet before anyone notices. POP! I wonder what would it sound like if I popped one next to my ear? In my infinite wisdom, I tried it. I barely heard the popping sound, immediately felt a vague pain, then completely lost hearing in my right ear. Distracted by pangs of anxious regret, I felt ready to leave camp for the first time that summer. My cathartic night was over.

It wasn’t until late that September that my hearing partially returned, but it came with a price. A loud, high-pitched ringing accompanied my right ear’s restored hearing, which would later be diagnosed as permanent Tinnitus from ear drum damage. It’s like that ringing you might hear after a particularly loud concert, except it never goes away. This ringing got quieter over time as my brain learned to ignore it, but in moments of stress, it returns with a vengeance. I have heard this ringing all day, every day, for almost a full decade. For years, I couldn’t help but frame it as the mistake that cost me the lovely memory of my final night as a camper.

It was the 2nd half Parent’s Weekend hymn sing of 2011, and my final night as a full-season camper after the best summer of my young life. Mayo was deep into his beautiful rendition of Now the Day is Over, the whole hall was humming the melody, and the lights were slowly dimming. I opened my eyes as darkness enveloped Witherbee Hall, waiting for my pupils to adjust to the subtle evening light peeking over the heads of proud parents. In the blueish twilight, I glanced at my dear friends and role models from Yurt 1, and felt a fat tear roll down my cheek. Powerful, unstoppable feelings of belonging, peace and euphoria forced my eyes closed once more. I knew I had found a true home in Dudley’s embrace.

Nine years after my ill-fated bubble wrap popping decision, I can definitively say that my relationship with Tinnitus has shifted. What I once viewed as a permanent irritant, I now understand to be a constant reminder of the night Camp Dudley’s community became a part of my identity. It’s easy to forget the sound I’m hearing, because its presence transports me back to the moments of uncharacteristic clarity that came before its creation, and for that I am grateful.

Silence, then: “Goodnight everybody,” “Goodnight Matt.” As the head rush from standing up too quickly subsided, the pleasant daze of peace remained. Arms around each other’s shoulders, my cabin sauntered back to the Yurt we loved to hate, but secretly loved, stopping every few yards to look in wonder at the luminous night sky framed by massive main campus evergreens.

Walking through our front door initiated a frantic exchange of contact information, stories and ambitions to return as Aides the next summer. We may or may not have been devouring cookies brought by a rule-breaking parent, but I digress. My hymn sing clarity continued to wash over me throughout the night, keeping me happily glued to the present.

From the Tip of North Point

The Dudley campus is eerily quiet at the moment. Truth be told, it’s beautiful. And yet it’s not. There are no campers, no leadership or staff at all.

I’m here though. And I want to remember.

So I’m walking up through Cub Alley just about 7 a.m., well before the leaders of Burr and Syracuse would’ve stirred but no doubt well after the most industrious Cub had roused himself to anticipate what was for breakfast or which extravaganza was in play for morning activities. I stroll slowly, taking the tour … via Swim Point, back behind the Boathouse, Suter, up the hill, down the steps, a peek inside Williams, a favorite cabin I was never in. Back on main campus, Witherbee is gleaming in blue-gold rays dappling through the tallest white pines.

7:25 a.m. Beyond weird to see an empty campus -- to feel it -- on July the 8th.

I stand there for a bit longer and try to imagine the energy just starting to bubble up as the dining hall and the office and the outdoors staff get busy. Horns, cannon, bugle, laughter, sleepy faces, K-crew already hard at work, a few early risers on the basketball court. But I’m looking at ghosts.

Now if you walk through the chapel grounds you can hear the ghosts, and if you get out to North Point and look back across the Dudley shoreline, it’s not hard to be moved by the silence and the solace and natural beauty that you might’ve missed, as I used to, in the constant buzz of a Dudley summer.

And yet, the silence swings my memory away from expectation. Seeing Camp in the summer of 2020, I’m struck by something else: the most vivid memories, the ones that won’t leave me, are not the good times with my brothers, or closest friends. It’s the difficult times, the reckonings with my own mistakes that register -- the ref’s technical foul and my coach reprimanding me for it; my A.L. who told me to grow up because I was a poor example for other Aides; the camp doctor who had to sew stitches in my Aide’s head due to my reckless stupidity; the maintenance boss who caught me slacking off at 12 Dudley Doings July, 2020

my pre-season job in the Boathouse; the theater director who told me my play was the single worst thing he’d ever seen on the Dudley stage, but he was going to let me try and do better next time; the fellow leader who pointed out my script’s cluelessness about race and what it meant to be Black in America.

All these memories stick with me now. Every one of the impressive individuals that loom so large in these reminiscences are there because they called me out and held me accountable.

I learned about myself from them, and I also learned through their exemplary character the meaning of integrity and leadership. Even though I kept making mistakes.

The silence on campus right now brings me back to the struggles, personal and collective. The Idea of what Camp is, its purpose. A place to fall and get back up, a place where you learn how to stop taking yourself so seriously -- and yet seriously enough to question everything, your good fortune, your advantages in life that many don’t have.

So many have felt that idea, and pondered it, and tried to wrap their heads around it, only to find that your definition and mine -- your Dudley and mine -- are never exactly the same thing. And now, here in this summer of Pandemic and Protest, the only way we can consider Dudley is by its very absence. If we think of Dudley as a place we can’t visit, as a camp we can’t attend -- and right now we can’t -- what is it?

As I sit on North Point this morning and consider the beauty and buildings and the ghosts and the history, it strikes me that Camp’s most powerful expression is not a set of ideals, but an idea -- Dudley’s Idea-of-Itself. Its constantly shifting Idea-ofItself, what it is, and should be, and must be.

If we’re frank, it’s pretty easy for the skeptic to look at the Dudley Motto and Dudley Spirit and think, “it costs nothing to come up with those ideals when you’re born into privilege.”

And that’s true. And that has to be acknowledged.

While other young people spent their summers mired in routine, or without support, or left to fend for themselves in difficult circumstances, Dudley was always a place where I celebrated generosity and selflessness, a place we could use to

escape from the outside world -- from the world wars, culture wars and race wars. Wasn’t it? Isn’t it?

But. Camp is not a Shangri-la, a memorial inviolate, or even a culture. It is not paradise or heaven. Camp is the idea of thousands of persons in a constant tension between complacency and change, engaged in a struggle for its meaning, its value, and its Idea-of-Itself. And for much of its history it’s been a battleground, unrecorded.

The written history of Camp Dudley has always been and will always be the Dudley Motto and the Dudley Spirit, inspired by the people who were said to have lived that ideal and served as role models. But the unwritten history is Dudley’s Idea-ofItself.

I want to take you back in the collective camp memory … The Rev. Harry Emerson Fosdick is entirely obscure to us, but a hundred years ago his modernist theology ran hard against the unwavering traditionalist Christian ethic, and it played out as a major culture war in the summer of 1922 at Camp Dudley, when a handful of leaders brought Fosdick’s ideas into their cabins, upending Dudley’s fundamentalist status quo.

Fosdick was an anti-war, anti-creationist “radical,” and on the front lines of the fight against racism (as a key supporter of the Scottsboro 9.) You have to read between the lines of the whitewashed history books -- or have spoken to someone who was there -- to know it; but that battle played out over five summers at Camp and set the foundation for what we think of as Dudley’s (and Kiniya’s) spiritual program today.

Memory flash: I think of Drew Hatcher’s incredible impromptu speech in Chapel, summer of 1971, when he hijacked the prayer service to call out Camp for its religious and racial hypocrisy. I’ve written about this before, but I didn’t record it correctly then. Stich, who was our Director, an honored veteran himself, handled the public moment with great sensitivity, but it wasn’t his moment that I’ll never forget, it was Drew’s. More to the point it was theirs together. I understand that better now. It was a young Black teenager’s defining moment, in a space that had never considered dissent, in front of an overwhelmingly white audience, an audience with just enough allies and sympathizers to recognize its impact. This was half-a-century ago! The moment instantly shifted Dudley’s Idea-of-Itself. It was Drew who taught a young camper something about himself that day, something that required the open-minded to question themselves and Camp Dudley.

It wasn’t always easy, and that’s the point. Not just now, but throughout its years, Dudley’s forced reckonings with its Ideaof-Itself have afforded change. The integration of women to the staff did not go smoothly, though today we see our female partners’ considerable contributions to the Dudley experience as essential. Likewise our culture of casual, hurtful homophobia belied our fidelity to the Dudley Motto, and though change was incremental we can be grateful to the Dudleyites who led us toward understanding the rights of all, who taught us how to be better persons.

Until things changed. Until we were nudged, and slightly awakened. By outspoken leaders unwilling to let camp bury its head in the sand, who used vespers and chapel talks as their forum to promote a more just and humane world. And by members of the Board of Managers. In 1967, largely through the initiative of Greg Farrell and others, Camp recognized its failure to give children of color access to Dudley summers, and so began to create long overdue scholarship funds to achieve those ends.

Was it enough? It’s never enough, but it was a spark, an inspiration with more to follow.

So many Dudleyites fought honorably for our freedom, in two World Wars and other conflicts. Some sacrificed their lives. But the largely unwritten history is that some refused to fight and kill as a matter of principle. During the Civil Rights struggles of the 1960s, social unrest, riots, and protests against the Vietnam war, a few committed themselves to fighting for social justice via non-violence. Camp summers went on just the same, blissfully, in a protected, rural idyll set apart while the world raged.

My fondest memories at Dudley involve listening to others. Where long discussions, sometimes in the form of disagreement, helped to foster an environment electric with potential. I’m grateful for those moments of personal education from people like Scott, Thad, Ed, Ben, Pat, Mandy, James, Jim, Kirsten, Dwight, Jeff, Rob, Pete, Mark, Doug, John, Grey, Steve, Adam, Henry, Bill, Jan, Tyler, Tom, and so many others who -- whether we were close friends or not -- challenged beliefs and assumptions. Change takes real effort and I’m appreciative that so many Dudleyites forced me to that effort.

Dudleyites, in spite of their shared love for camp, do not think in lockstep, and never have. Like all humans who share a passion for a place and its idea of itself, they have battled. And changed.

It’s encouraging to see Dudley’s staff and leadership taking a more committed position to change now. Change is hard. It forces you to take stock and adjust, to reason and hopefully learn something valuable about common humanity. And if enough people extend themselves, it becomes a better camp, closer to the ideals to which we aspire.

So. Here’s my Dudley, on the morning of July the 8th, 2020, from the tip of North Point on Lake Champlain, in the middle of a great pandemic, in the middle of a great struggle for equality and justice. Dudley can create a more forthright history from today onward. This reset of a silent summer gives us a chance to listen and learn. I’m hopeful we use that chance, that the change is real, and it’s coming, and it will make a difference.

Women of Dudley Dudley will forever be indebted to the women who have joined its community on the shores of Lake Champlain. They have done so much in so many ways for the campers, leaders and staff. Here we have a collection of memories and thoughts of camp from several memorable women who have worked at Dudley.

Margaret Lee #23219 Shortly after arriving in 2012 for my first summer at camp, I began to hear a lot about the infamous 4th of July traditions at Dudley. I had no clue what to expect on the actual day, but I dragged myself out of bed at 6:20 am to open Brodie for face painting. Decked out in red, white, and blue, camp really woke up at 7 am when nearly every emergency response vehicle in Essex County turned on their sirens for the parade. The cannon fired, the band marched, candy flew threw the air, and Sudsy’s fire 4-wheeler drenched innocent bystanders, including me! Luckily, there were Dudley donuts at breakfast to make me feel better. I will never forget my summers at camp or the lifelong best friends I met there!

Kara Dunne #18635 The Witherbee production of Kiss The Sky was an epic performance of epic proportions and is definitely one of my favorite memories from camp. I would say it was the closet thing to Cirque du Soleil that Dudley has ever experienced. Not only was it brilliantly written by Carl Jackson and Brendan Loughman, but it truly challenged the audience experience- in the same vein as when Moliere began to ‘break down the Fourth Wall.’ But I digress. The kids loved it! I would love to see a revival some day.

Remember those ticket books we used to have for store? I would give ten whole ticket books to see that production again! Now, my favorite “Tom Foolery” at camp was when Jamie Colligan came home from his hike and someone had put his entire bed into a row boat. He was so tired from the hike he swam out to his bed and took a rest period anyway.

Women of Dudley Amy Caffry #23646 My favorite experiences are the little ones: Watching everyone having fun just hanging out at the Sunday night Garbage Bowl Games, watching the interactions of so many kids playing and chilling on the lawn in front of Witherbee, making bracelets on the back porch of Brodie whilst just talking with the guys, hymn sing… Spending my time during the school year teaching, there is always this pressure of what I have to do, teach and get accomplished… I love the change of pace and being able to do as much or as little as the boys want. I definitely think there are boys that seek the women staff members out for a sense of comfort. I wish the kindness, acceptance and friendliness that is present in the Dudley Bubble could be replicated “in the real world”. A favorite personal experience was when I facilitated the creation of a stop motion movie of the Dudley Hymn, which was used in a slide show in 2013.

Martha McKinley #20608 I still can feel the excitement of spending a summer at Camp Dudley. I grew up spending a lot of time at Camp - both during the summer and in the off-season, so when I finally got to work as a Staff Member, I already felt I knew what to expect. However, working there exceeded any expectation I had. I did not anticipate the family that I’d gain by working at Dudley. I did not expect to meet people and foster relationships like I did. Camp was always a second home to me but it quickly became a second family.

I loved everything from working long, hard days during pre-season, getting all the fields ready for the summer. Tilling the baseball diamonds with Blair, Dave, and the other A-Hut members, lining the football and soccer fields, ensuring all the equipment was ready to be used by all the campers.

The Camp “magic” was infectious. There was also a special bond I made with my fellow female staff members. The fun we had throughout our summers at camp made us best friends for life. I love the history of Camp Dudley. While my uncles and aunts and cousins and brothers had different experiences at Camp, we all know the magic. It is sometimes hard to put into words but we don’t need to because we all just understand it. I feel so lucky to have felt and understood the magic of this place.

Women of Dudley Cat McCutcheon #22465 My memories begin similarly to countless others who’ve attended Camp Dudley. It begins with the butterflies. The giddy, fluttering feeling in the pit of my stomach as I turned onto the Dudley road and edged closer to the campus gates. I always felt them-those butterflies. They returned every year, and they signified how enlivened I felt when going to Dudley.

I arrived in the summer of 2011, with high school behind me and college not yet encountered. I have monumental memories stored and friendships I’ll carry for a lifetime. Though, much of my nostalgia is preserved in the small moments: I remember my walk down to swim point every morning, waving to campers as they mustered in their divisions.

I remember singing Buddy Check songs, specifically one to the tune of Run-Around-Sue.

I remember the way the lake caught hold of the sun, glistening, just before dinner.

I remember the sound of every cannon, trumpet, and bell that beckoned me to a meal.

I remember the way my face felt, fixed in a smile, watching Wednesday night shows.

I remember all the in-between minutes spent sitting on Adams porch with my friends.

Little known personal fact: I’ve never sung the entirety of the final hymn at Hymn Sing. Rather, I would sing only the first verse, then close my eyes, and reflect on another great week.

They were always great weeks.

I remember how lucky Willa and I’d feel when Big Joe gave us rides in the golf cart and when Dawn saved candy for us.

Willa McKinley #22008 I worked at swim point. I was tan and voiceless for the majority of every summer. I absolutely loved swim point- it was the only place on campus, besides Beckman, that every camper, even if he couldn’t swim, would visit. I loved every part of it, the campers, the staff members working with me, the water, the sun, the megaphones, the tank tops, you name it!

Despite my adoration for swim point, and my countless memories at the Point, one of my favorite Dudley memories was from my last summer as a staff member in 2016 when I led a canoe trip with Senior campers and Bill Harper in Saranac Lake. In my six years working at camp, this was the first time I was going into the woods with a division, and I was elated!

During our three days on the Saranac, we played a lot of cards, ate a lot of GORP, made s’mores, got tons of bug bites, shared deep conversations, and portaged canoes.

What I loved and appreciated most about this experience was the normalcy of it. Though we generally surround ourselves with people of similar backgrounds, ages and like-minded political/social affiliations, Dudley normalized stretching and breaking these affiliations. There I was, the swim point girl, in the woods of the Adirondacks with seven, 13 year old boys from all over the world, all different backgrounds, and it felt totally normal. I never would have shared this experience if it wasn’t for Camp. It is because of experiences like this one that I will be forever grateful for Camp Dudley.

The Great Outdoors

This is a photo from the best hiking experience of my life, that happened… by chance. During the summer of 2001 I took a break from being a leader and spent a year working at an agrochemicals company in Kent, England. What was I thinking… right? When I found out that my position was ending a little earlier than I expected, I wrote to Andy Bisselle right away and asked if I could come help out at the end of the season. He said ‘Yes’ and I bought a plane ticket the next day.

they kinda knew me when they were cubs during the previous season, but it was still a bit awkward. I remember sitting in a circle with them and saying ‘this is going to be a great hike’.

And it was. I didn’t know it then, but I had been given the opportunity to lead a phenomenal group of young men into the Adirondacks: Matt McElroy, John Frankel, Ben Walsh, Cole Grossman, Parker Kniesley and Connor Smith. To top it off, Tim Powell was my JL. How awesome was this group.

I arrived on the Sunday morning before week 8 was about to begin… at 1 a.m.. I was picked up by my friend Rob and crashed in his cabin for the night. I woke up a few hours later, filled with a sense of nervous excitement and then BAM... I bumped into Andy pretty much right away. He said, with his typical straight-to-the-point personality: ‘Hey Dan, Good to see you. By the way. Something’s come up, and you will be taking a plebe hike tomorrow and when you get back you will be the leader in Linwood and the coach of Team Diablo (and you will go to the fair, and be in leaders serial and attend final council ring and 2 hymn sings etc.)’ Wow… My plan of chilling out for a week at camp became a full-blown hurricane before the sun had fully risen on the first day.

We didn’t walk up the mountains. We sprinted up the mountains. I couldn’t keep up and they were determined to make the best of their experience together. We did Algonquin, Wright, Philips and I am pretty sure one or two more over those two and a half days in the woods. Moutain House Turkey Tetrazzini never tasted so good. Two and a half days... and it really does feel like the whole group came together and achieved something great in that short timespan.

I think it is amazing that after all of these years I still remember so much from that hiking trip. I look forward to the day when my sons can have their own memorable experiences in the Adirondacks with a leader that pushes them to see what they can do... whether or not he just arrived on campus within the last 24 hours.

The Great Outdoors Sticks and Stones May, or May Not, Break Your Bones

By Peter Burns, #24297 YOHA, Dudley friends! I’d like to share a story that I wrote this spring about my Senior Night Experience. This is one of the most important parts of one’s life at Dudley because it’s a time to reflect inward and feel everything around you, and to me at least, that is the core of what the Dudley experience is all about. I hope you all enjoy my story, and remember that wearing a mask is the ultimate way to put the other fellow first.

The task was simple. I only had to find my way through the wilderness and return to the campsite, in the middle of the night, all alone. But there’s a catch: no lights allowed. I’m talking about one of Camp Dudley’s most beloved traditions, dubbed the Senior Night Experience, commonly known as the “Snee.” I had waited four long years, and it was finally my time.

This bridge between boyhood and manhood was only about three miles long, and paved with sticks, rocks, dirt, and gnarled tree roots.

The sun had set about halfway when Jason led us down the winding, narrow path of the Snee trail. As we walked, Jason placed dim red lights, referred to as “beacons,” on the ground whenever we reached a turn or a hazardous place that can cause injury, like Senior Rock: a gigantic stone near the end of the trail that many a senior has tripped over during his Snee.

As the light receded from the Adirondack sky, my nerves continued to build. Soon I would embark on my journey.

When we arrived at the beginning of the Snee trail, the sky was pitch dark. Jason gave everyone, including the leaders, a whistle in case something goes wrong on the Snee. One could fall down Stacy Brook’s steep banks and into the water, wander off the trail and stumble onto busy Route 12, or, God forbid, encounter disturbed mountain men.

I don’t know why, but I volunteered to go first. Jason gave me the go ahead, and I took my first steps into the abyss.

As I walked, I could hear my heart beating and the blood rushing through my veins. By Bill McCutcheon #10065 I remember was nothing short of astonishing. At precisely 12 noon on that day the 2 parties arrived at the spot we picked exactly on time. We camped together and redistributed our supplies and on the next morning we headed off on our separate ways.

Back in the seventies (I think it was 1974) I had the opportunity to take the 2nd trip up to a large park in Quebec province.

We did not bring our own canoes but rented fiberglass ones.

We rented vans and took the long ride and got to our destination in the early afternoon.

We got underway and made camp the 1st night. On the next morning we arrived at our 1st Rapids. Being the leader I thought it best that I show off my expertise and go 1st. Much to my dismay I not only swamped the canoe but it folded itself in half over a large rock as we bobbed down to meet our campers at the bottom of the carry. With the damage and the now shattered canoe pulled up on shore all the boys wanted to know what we were going to do next as we could not proceed any further. I dragged the canoe to a logging road and fortunately was able to hitch a ride with a logging truck that was going back to where we started.

It was one of the finest trips I’ve ever taken as a Dudley leader (or camper for that matter.) The boys on the trip were terrific. One must remember that we did all this without GPS, cell phones, or any outside contact save for the one phone call I made to camp and that was at a phone booth! Perhaps the most difficult aspect of the trip was that we left just prior to the end of the half and returned 5 days into the 2nd half. Back then not that many boys flipped during the half season, but I was supposed to write a camper report for a kid in the 1st half that I barely even knew. Needless to say my friends poked a lot of fun at me for that.

Sadly due to the sheer logistics the 10-day Canadian Canoe trip did not survive. It was incredibly successful but the time away from camp was deemed too long. I was fortunate to not only have a great trip but have great kids on that trip. They all got back to camp and into their routines and the memories would last forever. Oh by the way... Grinwis did not charge me for the canoe.

There I placed the call to our fabled Paul Grinwis and explained my plight. He said not to worry, just rent another Canoe. And he said (by the way) “That will cost you next week’s pay!” I got lucky, grabbed another canoe and tossed it on another truck that returned me to the boys. The rest of our trip was nothing short of outstanding. A little rough weather but for the most part a glorious experience.

I remember that prior to departure Schell McKinley and I talked about whether or not we could rendezvous on the 5th day. We picked a spot on our maps to meet at 12 noon. What

The Great Outdoors The Cub Hike

By Aidan Moran, #19636 The time i went ahead on the trail to poop on a cub day hike. We passed the poop and everyone thought it was from a bear: Well they say everybody poops. As a young cub, I was never mistaken for a bear, but my diet and lack of hiking etiquette led people to assume an ursine mountain dweller of sorts had produced a very stinky smell that was in fact borne of my butt.

During a day hike up Hurricane Mountain, I excused myself from the group during a snack break and went in the direction I thought we would not be going. But when we finished the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, the group proceeded to move dangerously close to yesterday’s swedish meatballs.

Team Dirty trekked within sniffing distance. I had no idea how close to the summit we had been, but we arrived soon after everyone commented on how only a large forest creature could have created such a putrid stank. I quickly forgot how embarrassed I was because the weather was snow or sleet or rain depending on the minute, and I just wanted to be not cold and wet.

Fond memories such as this encouraged me to return to Dudley over the following summers. To think something similar won’t be happening to a lucky young cub this year makes me very sad.

Welcome to the 85th Annual… Justin Noel memorial... How did they do it while also working after third at Dunkin Donuts... They lied to me all the time but I still loved ‘em anyway… I was inspired, I was motivated, I was energized…. Camp Dudley Leader Hunt Extravaganza!!!!

Instructions: STEP 1: Randomly select five Dudleyites: • Would be aides during the summer of 2020.

• Have experienced cub, plebe, junior, and senior seasons at Camp Dudley Ask each of these former campers to name a former leader/ AL/JL/aide/coach/trip leader that was memorable in a positive way, and ask them to explain what made them memorable.

STEP 2: Contact all nominated leaders and ask them the same question: Who is a memorable leader from your time at camp and why were they memorable.

STEP 3 to INFINITY: Continue contacting all nominated leaders, asking them to nominate memorable leaders from their past experience at Dudley, going as far back in history as is possible to do so in the time period for this project (3 weeks).

Why did I do this?

To give yet another example of how Camp Dudley is more than a place. Why do the men that lead our boys every summer do a fantastic job? They do so in large part due to the inspiration of those that have come before them. There are so many reasons

to want to be a leader at Dudley, but one of the most powerful is that you want to emulate the leaders that you had when you were a camper. They were kind, they were compassionate, they made you feel special, they pushed you to be the best you could be, and you adored them because of all of this. You wanted to give that gift to another child and experience the same feelings of self-worth and accomplishment that come with it... So here, in black and white is evidence of that never-ending chain of leaders who have inspired each other to live the Dudley Motto.

What this is NOT: This is not a popularity contest. It is not a definitive list of the great leaders of Dudley. I started with a random collection of aides and went from there, and so this is but a small snapshot of the leaders who have made a difference in the lives of others. If your most memorable leader is not on this list, then go ahead and write or call the guy and tell him how he helped you grow into the person that you are today. Don’t have their contact information? Contact camp and they can help you out...

What I noticed: I will admit that I went into this project with some expectations about what kind of person would be selected as a memorable leader. What surprised me (in a great way) was how often ALs, JLs and even Aides were mentioned. This reinforced the already well-known importance of the leadership program at Camp Dudley. It is sometimes daunting for a boy of 15 or 16 to believe that they can be an effective leader responsible for a peer only 2 or 3 years younger than themselves. This project proves that they can.

So here, we go… Let the leader hunt begin!

Brian treated me with so much respect and equality, despite holding higher positions than me. No matter what was going on I knew I could count on Brian to hear me out and then help me solve it. His consistent wacky demeanor and “go with the flow energy” really helped me feel at home as a new camper.

C. Ryan Joyce #15093 Nominated by: Brian Degen, #19892 When: 2007 - Cub Leader Reason: I was an introverted and quiet kid who was very unsure about leaving home for a month to go to a sleepaway camp.

As the second Cub to arrive on opening day, I spent over an hour with just my leadership before my first cabinmate arrived.

Ryan was so friendly, and surprisingly we had a lot in common (grew up near each other, he attended the high school my whole family attended, and we were actually family friends who had never met). He was so full of positive energy that I couldn’t help but smile whenever he spoke. He helped me get through homesickness and cheered loudly for me when I scored a goal against his own team. All in all, he made me feel so welcome and excited to be at Dudley. He is the #1 reason why I chose to return for future summers.

Tim White #15966 Nominated by: C. Ryan Joyce #15093 When: 1999 - AL Reason: To say Tim was memorable would not be doing him the justice. He was, for his age and position, already a Camp Dudley legend! He stole the show every Wednesday evening on the Witherbee stage with his fellow AL’s as the lead “singer” in renditions of the boy bands from the 90’s (“You are my fire” comes to mind). Back in the cabin he had a way of blending in with the campers (in which nearly every camper in that cabin went on to be a Dudley leader) and making them feel like he was their age while also gaining their respect and compassion. After vespers, every single night of the summer, Tim and I would take 10 minutes, just the two of us, and sit outside on the steps of Andrews Lodge. We would chat about the day, the campers, the next day, etc. But, more often then not, we would talk about life, family, growing up. And once in a while, we would sit in silence and enjoy the Dudley Dome. Tim was suffering from a breathing disease that summer and would continue to struggle for several years to come before his untimely death in his late 20’s. I wrote my chapel talk, entitled “Hero’s”, about him that summer and I am glad he had the opportunity to hear it.

Reason: Collin was a very fun AL who was always excited to play basketball during my Senior year. He was an AL I looked up to and last year as a JL I became friends with him and always have a great time being with him.

Reason: My plebe summer was one of the rainiest on record. All my clothes got trashed and overall it was a very different summer than ‘07. But Monkeyman’s constant energy and positivity made it one of the most fun summers I had as a camper. As my leader when I was an AL, Monkey provided the support I needed while trusting me to run the cabin myself. Overall, he really helped me develop as a leader and made sure I had fun while doing it.

Reason: For about 6 years, my macbook password was “monkeyman”. Erik Soderstrom (I actually forgot his real name and had to look him up on LinkedIn) was my leader during my Aide year, and as I began to cultivate my own leadership personality, I found Monkeyman to be an important role model. I was awestruck by the way he could balance sheer joy and excitement with sincere care and tenderness.

He instilled in our cabin a culture of joy and love, and it helped make that summer one of my best at camp.

Reason: I had the pleasure of watching Peter grow up at camp from cub year ( I remember him running around and doing a raptor impression at council rings) and I was fortunately lucky enough to work alongside with him and call him a close friend. He was a phenomenal leader who brought a great energy and excitement to everything he did, and the kids admired him for it. I remember being jealous that a lot of things seemed to come natural to him that took me summers to get good at. In the end it was nice to know that I was leaving the task of leadership in the hands of some of the best young men I had every worked with.

Reason: Jack was memorable as the first leader in my life who really took the time to help me adjust to camp. As a cub I ended up being a tough camper, not because of your stereotypical home sickness, but rather that I suffered from severe allergies and often had bad attacks at night.

When these attacks would occur, Jack would take me to the infirmary and sit with me as I got them under control.

I know I was making his already difficult job harder, but he was patient with me and his kindness helped me to not only have a great summer that year but it kicked off a life long love of camp.

Nii Quaye #19608 Nominated by: Bo McKinley #19399 When: 2004 - 2005 Reason: Nii pulled me aside because he knew that I was a basketball player - and interested in getting better. I hung out with his brother a lot as a cub and plebe, Tay (who was an Aide at the time in the Plebes), and they both sort of took me under their wings. Nii would insist that I practice my form shooting before I played any pickup games or did anything else on the court.

I remember finding it kind of annoying, but he helped me develop good habits that have stuck with me to this day. Looking back on it, that was probably my first lesson in the importance of building good habits. Nii was also massive, and built like a bodybuilder, both qualities that I envied and hoped to achieve one day.....a boy can dream!

Dudley Project: Leader Hunt Asher Porphy #22978 Nominated by: Ryan Woods, #24385 When: 2019 - Senior Leader and Coach Reason: Asher and my other coaches Archie Maclnnes, and Jack Grills were great coaches. All of them pushed me and my fellow teammates on the fields and pushed us to try new things. Like for me something new was water polo. Asher did however leave my cabin and joined another cabin which happened to have my older brother Thomas in it. Asher against all odds did the impossible and spent time with his new campers and also his old campers.

As the years have gone by, we’ve stayed in touch and continue to catch up and get closer!

Ever since that trip, I’ve reused some of Tom’s fun anecdotes and stories in an attempt to create the same excitement, for the next generation of kids, that I felt on my boys to men trip so many years ago.

Reason: Even though I was never his camper, as a cub when I was first introduced to him he always made sure to care of others. In my later years when I gotten a chance to know him a little better, he was always able to get a group of guys together and have fun around camp. He pushed campers and peers to better themselves in sports and other ways possible.

Reason: He always brought energy and was able to connect with campers on a personal level. Scotty’s stage presence, whether for the Wednesday or Saturday Night Shows are still some of the best I have ever seen. As a camper, I couldn’t wait to see his classic Disney Remake during the Wednesday Night Show.

I remember wanting so badly that summer to be like Jordan -- I think our whole team wanted to be like him. And, all things considered, we did a pretty good job. We had a lot of laughs, cared about each other, and won a couple of championships too.

During my first summer in the Senior Division (in 2010), Tariq was one of my campers. What always stood out was Tariq’s resilience as an individual. Tariq actually entered Columbia cabin inauspiciously that summer; he thought he was back at camp to be an Aide and was initially disappointed to find out that he was again a member of the Senior Division as a camper. Despite the initial setback, Tariq took this challenge head on and displayed incredible leadership skills during this Senior session. I always found Tariq developing his leadership style during free time mentoring younger Cubs and Plebes. Tariq went on to be a Senior Division standout, earning his 3-week award, then skipping his aide year to become a JL in 2011, an AL in 2012, and finally a leader in the Seniors in 2013.
