New Faces at Dudley & Kiniya! After#20#years#of#service# to#Kiniya,##20005$Gail$ Coleman#joined#the#yearN round#team#in#the#spring# of#2012!#Gail#started#in# 1992#as#second#chef,#servN ing#lunch#and#dinner#four# days#per#week.#A#talented# chef#with#strong#leadership# skills,#she#moved#to#Head#Chef#in#1995.#Hundreds# of#Kiniya#campers#and#staff#have#benefited#from#her# many#talents.#Each#summer,#Gail#commits#over#60# hours#per#week#to#Kiniya.#Now,#in#the#offNseason,#she# works#with#Marnie#and#Matt,#catering#for#all#offNseason# events,#including#Board#and#Leadership#meetings,# work#weekends#and#user#groups.#In#addition,#she#cooks# a#delicious#meal#every#two#weeks#for#the#entire#DudN ley/Kiniya#team.#This#new#tradition#is#much#anticiN pated#and#thoroughly#enjoyed#by#the#entire#yearNround# staff!#(Today#is#lasagna#day#.#.#.#anyone#hungry?!) The$Inaugural$Dudley4Kiniya4NOLS$ Leadership$Trip by$#15509$Scott$Steen The#2012#season#marked#the#beginning#of#a#new#partnership#between#the#National#OutN door#Leadership#School#(NOLS),#Camp#Dudley#and#Camp#Kiniya.#Last#summer,#we#sent# twentyNnine#young#men#and#women#on#three#separate#trips#to#Wyoming’s#wild#and#scenic# Wind#River#Mountains#to#embark#on#an#adventure#of#a#lifetime.#The#trips#were#coNled#by# NOLS#instructors#and#Camp#Dudley#and#Kiniya#staff,#Catherine#Butler,#Dylan#Pollock,# Will#Sword#and#Peter#Treiber.#While#in#the#mountains,#the#trips#kept#busy#for#21#days# backpacking,#fly#fishing,#and#rock#climbing.#The#primary#focus#was#on#leadership#developN ment.#Each#and#every#member#of#the#expedition#dedicated#weeks#to#developing#both#backN country#skills#and#personal#leadership#skills#in#an#outdoor#classroom#that#melded#NOLS# curriculum#with#the#Dudley#mission#and#core#values.# Said##20680$Austin$Huber, “Throughout&the&trip,&whether&we&were&climbing&a&vertical&rock&face& or&relaxing&around&the&campsite,&we&were&constantly&learning&and&practicing&our&various&leadership& techniques.&Learning&and&literally&attending&a&Leadership&School&allows&for&a&more&concentrated& and&focused&environment&in&which&the&upcoming&leaders&at&Dudley&are&able&to&acquire&their&own& signature&styles.”&&&&&& From#an#outside#perspective,#it#may#seem#that#a#NOLS#trip#to#Wyoming#and#a#Dudley# summer#as#an#Aide,#JL#or#AL#are#quite#different.#This#is#true#in#many#ways.#It#is#the#difN ference#between#waking#up#to#horns#and#waking#up#to#frost#on#the#nose.#A#day#spent#on# the#soccer#field#or#a#day#spent#in#an#alpine#field.#An#evening#at#candy#store#or#an#evening# making#sure#the#grizzly#bears#don’t#eat#your#candy#store.#Or#even#a#moment#of#silence#in# the#Camp#Chapel#versus#a#moment#looking#at#the#divine#beauty#of#glaciated#granite#spires# against#deep#blue#sky.#

When#looking#past#these#differences,#a#little#deeper#into#the#two#programs,#Dudley#and# NOLS#have#an#astonishing#amount#of#overlap.#It#can#be#found#in#our#motto.#This#is#true# especially#in#our#Camp#Leadership#Development#Program.#Both#organizations#teach#how# to#live#well#with#others.#Our#motto,#“The#Other#Fellow#First”#is#similar#to#the#NOLS#credo# of#“Expedition#Behavior”#and#“Leave#No#Trace”#ethics.##At#Dudley#and#Kiniya,#we#conN centrate#our#efforts#primarily#on#the#people#in#our#immediate#cabin,#team#and#divisional# communities.#This#is#because#every#Aide,#JL,#AL#and#Leader#is#charged#with#taking#care# of#someone#else’s#children.#We#take#this#job#very#seriously.#On#the#Dudley#Kiniya#NOLS# Leadership#trips,#campers#are#removed#from#the#equation,#and#the#groups#learn#to#live# well#with#just#each#other#and#the#outdoors.#Then,#after#spending#a#camp#session#on#a#trip# like#this,#the#young#men#and#women#can#delve#back#in#the#Dudley#and#Kiniya#communiN ties#and#beyond.#They#have#fresh#perspectives,#new#confidence,#and#honed#leadership#and# outdoor#skills#to#pass#on#and#“pay#forward”#to#others. am#delighted#to#be#here,#to#see#Kiniya#in#action#for# myself#instead#of#just#listening#to#Eliza’s#many#tales,# and#to#see#what#a#wonderful#camp#you#all#have#built# together#following#the#Dudley#traditions#and#mission# from#across#the#lake#and#following#the#traditions#of#the#original# Camp#Kiniya.##Eight#years#ago#this#place#was#merely#a#dream# for#me#and#other#members#of#the#Dudley#Board.##What#a#thrill# and#honor#to#be#here! The#theme#of#the#week#here#at#Kiniya#is#teamwork.##Today#I#am# going#to#talk#about#teamwork#by#talking#about#anatomy,#about# some#key#parts#of#your#body#and#how#they#work#together#as#a# team.#But#I’m#not#going#to#speak#as#a#scientist;#I#am#going#to# talk#about#the#spiritual#basis#to#teamwork,#to#this#important# teamwork#of#the#body#and#spirit. Part#of#my#inspiration#for#this#talk#comes#from#a#yoga#class#I# took#this#winter.#Besides#being#a#physical#activity,#yoga#is#also# #19408&Linda&Saarnijoki,&speaking&at&the&Kiniya&Chapel& a#mental#and#spiritual#discipline,#training#you#to#be#mindful#of# & your#body#and#its#power. ## Two#basic#movements#of#yoga#have#been#spiritually#provocative#for#me.##And#pretty# easy,#fortunately,#for#a#beginner#like#me.#When#in#class#we#were#standing#up#or#perhaps# touching#our#hands#to#the#floor,#my#teacher#asked#us#to#connect#to#the#earth,#“rooting# down”#she#calls#it,#to#feel#the#force#of#the#earth#pushing#back#against#our#hands#or#feet.## The#earth#supports#us#and#holds#us#with#its#gravity.##In#a#symbolic#sense,#too,#the#earth# sustains#and#supports#us,#nurturing#us#with#food#and#energy.##As#I#concentrated#to#feel# that#support#beneath#my#feet,#I#also#thought#metaphorically#about#all#that#supports# me,#all#that#I#stand#on#as#I#live#my#life:#my#family,#my#friends,#my#traditions,#my#culN ture,#my#spiritual#beliefs.#As#I#thought#about#“rooting#down,”#I#thought#about#digging# deep#into#the#love#I#feel#from#family#and#friends,#into#the#values#I#care#about,#into#the# central#core,#the#meaning#of#my#life,#and#feeling#it#flow#into#my#body.## The#other#yoga#movement#that#I#find#inspiring#is#reaching#up,#stretching#high#and# far,#fingertips#stretching#upward.##Toward#the#sky,#certainly,#but#also#toward#dreams,# toward#hopes,#toward#whatever#you#aspire#to#be,#toward#your#best#self.#

Your#ability#to#reach#high#is#absolutely#dependent#on#the#earth#staying#solid#beneath# your#feet.#If#you#lose#your#balance,#the#earth#will#catch#you.##Metaphorically#you#form# dreams#and#reach#toward#them#with#the#support#and#strength#developed#from#relationN ships#and#traditions,#the#nurturing#of#the#earth,#the#roots#of#your#life.#If#you#stumble# or#lose#balance#in#life,#your#beliefs#and#core#values#set#you#right#again;#they#catch#you.## Your#friends#and#family#catch#you.#Your#feet#on#the#earth#support#your#arms’#reach.## Know#that#you#are#rooted.##Use#that#certainty#to#reach#ever#higher.# THE(CAMP(DUDLEY(NEWS

Healthcare continued — That&is&the&ultimate&compliment&to&our&level&of&care. Q.&Is&there&a&“nurse’s&story”&that&you&might&share?& A.&One&summer,&a&JL&was&at&a&cabin&supper&with&his&group&on&Albany&Island.&He&climbed&a&tree& and&became&impaled&on&the&tree.&Quite&literally,&his&arm&somehow&had&the&tree&trunk&enter&his& skin&like&an&IV.&The&group&borrowed&a&saw&from&a&nearby&Canadian&boat&and&the&JL&was&cut& off&the&tree,&wood&intact&in&his&arm.&A&very&smart&adult&that&was&on&site&left&the&wood&in&place& and&got&the&young&man&to&the&Infirmary.&The&story&has&a&wonderful&ending&.&.&.&no&permanent& damage!&&#

Lake Champlain!” Greetings From Kiniya, As the saying goes, “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” As we start a new fiscal year and reflect on our 2013 season, this rings especially true. It’s not just the succession of the summer, where our July session is quickly followed by August. It is the sense that everything is connected, happens for a reason, and that one thing always leads us to another. Aside from our camp season, September/October is my favorite time of year. Each year it brings the opportunity for rest, reflection, renewal, and a true sense of pride for all that we have accomplished. It also brings great hope for our campers’ success as they head back into the school year, and of renewed commitment and purpose.

I am also bombarded by a thousand images of triumphs and challenges, both personally and professionally. I think about the wonderful relationships that I am able to maintain through Camp with parents, campers, staff and alumni. At its core, our role as directors of our beloved camps is about relationships and community. It is important for us to not merely to serve and direct, but to work together with our community as partners. It is through this partnership that we feel camp can have a lasting impact, one built on trust and respect, which carries on from the summer through the rest of the year. It is very gratifying to hear from families about the wonderful experiences that their girls have had at camp – learning new skills, meeting new friends, and asking important questions about themselves and the world. True, some of this feedback is not entirely positive, or even easy to hear. But as wonderful as it is to get compliments, it is essential to receive constructive criticism as well. It is truly rare in life that we improve as a result of success alone. With our successes and shortcomings, we become stronger as a camp, just as our campers become stronger from the ups and downs of each camp season. With great respect for the past lessons learned and optimism over the boundless possibilities ahead, we embark on our strategic planning process. From where I now stand, I can look back and see what we have accomplished over the course of my 20 summers at Kiniya. But I can also sense the potential of what is yet to come. I could not be more excited about this next chapter at Camp, the many promises that it brings for Dudley and Kiniya and the opportunity to work in partnership with Matt and in collaboration with this incredible community. Congrats, Marnie! Marnie McDonagh celebrates 20th year at Kiniya!

n January of 1994, Marnie McDonagh was at home in Australia reading “The Age,” a Melbourne newspaper, where she spotted an advertisement for Camp Counselors USA, an organization Kiniya still uses to hire international staff. The ad was intended to recruit instructors for summer camps in the USA. Marnie was game, so she sent off an application. Marnie remembers “After a lengthy interview process, I was placed on review at Camp Kiniya in Colchester, VT. The Assistant Director at the time, Mary Williams (middle daughter of then owners Jack and Mimi Williams), called me for a phone interview in April, which resulted in my placement at Kiniya as a water-ski instructor for the coming summer.” Little did Marnie, or Camp Dudley, know that a summer might lead to a career. Our young water-ski instructor was jazzed about a summer in America and had hopes of traveling the world after the summer was over. That’s not quite how it worked out. As Marnie recalls, “I landed in Burlington, VT, on June 14, 1994 and I remember my first drive into Kiniya vividly. Mary Williams had collected me from the airport in a white 15-seater van and we drove through the entrance, straight to the dining hall, where the view of the lake took my breath away. I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the campus from the first moment I set foot on it. The reality of Kiniya far exceeded my many expectations.”

You’ll not be surprised to hear that Marnie ran a pretty sharp waterskiing program that summer. Former owners, Jack and Marilyn (“Mimi”) Williams knew a good thing when they saw it and asked Marnie McDonagh to return the following summer as Head Counselor. From there it was off to the races, with Marnie becoming Assistant Director in 1997, Associate Director in 1999 and Director, following Dudley’s acquisition of Kiniya in 2006. Marnie recalls this journey with pride. “I learned so much about running a Camp from Jack and

Mimi in my early years and was so impressed with their ability to remember each and every girl who attended Kiniya over the years. Mimi’s wonderful sense of adventure and fun, combined with her remarkably high energy level was perfectly balanced by Jack’s sharp business sense and attention to detail. Camp was their life for 55 years and they have immense pride in all that they achieved over that time and fond memories of all that they created.”

Enter Dudley! In 2005, Dudley had made the decision to enter girls camping, and was searching for the right partner to fulfill this expanded mission. #18141 Fran Bisselle was leading that search, heard about Kiniya, and visited Jack and Marilyn for lunch. Fran met and took time with Marnie as well. Said Marnie, “I enjoyed hearing Fran’s stories about camp life at Dudley and Jeanne D’Arc, where Fran was a camper and later Director. Soon after, I was introduced to the Dudley Board of Managers when they came to visit Kiniya for a tour during their Spring Board Meeting in 2005. I was greeted warmly by each and every member of the board and became excited about the possibility of working with them in Kiniya’s next chapter.”

The acquisition was completed, and Marnie visited Dudley for the first time, where she was asked to be the Kiniya Director. She recalls, “Being so impressed by the Dudley campus and the incredibly well maintained facilities, but more importantly by the leadership of the camp and the commitment and enthusiasm of each staff member I encountered. I stepped into that first summer overwhelmed about all that lay ahead but deeply committed to taking one step at a time - leading our community through a transition that would result in both growing pains and tremendous possibilities.” That transition has been nothing short of remarkable, with Marnie leading the way. In a challenging balancing act, she has been able to maintain the best of Kiniya’s 96-year culture, while introducing team sports, leadership training, spirituality and “The Other Fellow First” to the camp. The summer of 2013 marked Kiniya’s 8th year as part of the Dudley family and Marnie’s 20th year at Kiniya. Former leader and staff member Megan Powell notes,

“I have always loved that Marnie is a ‘Yes Woman.’ She never says no to an idea that is presented to her, but rather she says yes with gusto and enthusiasm. No matter how crazy or unfeasible the idea is, Marnie helps you make it happen. The result is a camp environment that is creative, fun and positive.” Said Dudley Director Matt Storey, “I can’t imagine a better partner than Marnie as we approach the challenges and excitement of leading Kiniya and Dudley together. My hat is off to her in achieving 20 years at Kiniya. It’s a great accomplishment.” Kiniya’s 2013 yearbook The Spirit was dedicated to Marnie. Said Leadership Development Director Kat Hood, “It is incredibly rare to come by a Director as dedicated as Marnie. We love that she says goodnight to us each night, reminds us to have fun and be nice to each other, and ultimately we are thankful for her commitment to all of us here at Kiniya.” Well Done, #20001 Marnie McDonagh! Our First Ever . . . three day, two-night overnight

hike and canoe trips. Our campers and families were asking for more and we delivered. Not only did we extend the length of the trip but we also sent out our oldest Senior campers, from cabins Van Buren, Ark, Lower and Upper Loft, all at the same time! This was a great accomplishment for our program staff and helped improve the flow of our daily schedule.

his summer Camp Dudley, and Camp Kiniya sent twelve campers —eight boys and four girls — on the German exchange program. I was lucky enough to be the Kiniya leader coleading with Dudley leader #17525 Peter “Shorty” Treiber. The trip was split into three parts: a one-week homestay, two weeks at Camp Abbensen, outside of Hannover, and the final week traveling through Germany. When we arrived in Hannover, the YMCA director and all the families that our campers were going to stay with for the first week warmly greeted us and we all went our separate ways. As leaders, we stayed with YMCA (or “CVJM”) leaders. Departure day for the Dudley and Kiniya campers. Each family gave their campers a tour of Hannover, going to the zoo, touring the city and in the middle of the homestay we all met at the City Hall and had the chance to meet their lord mayor (“Oberburgermeister”). At the end of that week, it was off to Camp Abbensen for an international camping experience. At Abbensen we had extravaganzas every day with all the leaders really getting into the games and hyping the kids up. Abbensen was such an amazing experience. We got the chance to experience camp in a way we never had before, learning new traditions while embracing different cultures. Along with the extravaganzas, the campers went on a three-day hike and canoe trip, participated in a talent show and learned about all the different cultures represented at the camp. The last week of our trip we traveled from Hannover to Berlin, where we stopped and saw the Berlin Wall, then went to Dresden and toured the old city. Our final stop With Leader Pete Treiber sporting great lederhosen, the Dudley boys, feeling like true Germans after a few days at Abbensen. was in Munich, where we toured the city, took a night watch tour, and toured the Neuschwanstein Castle, which is the real life Disney castle! This year’s German exchange was unforgettable. We made new friends, experienced new cultures, and made memories that will last forever.

New Dudley & Kiniya Projects — 2013-14

e’ve been busy on both sides of the lake — moving dirt, setting stones, digging holes, planting trees and painting inside and out! This past summer saw the dedication of the new Lois P. Schmidt Memorial Chapel and Muhlhausen Cabin at Kiniya (See pages 24-25). Other projects include:

At 7:59 AM, June 25, 2013, opening day of the 129th summer season, the last construction details were completed on the newly refurbished Bungalow. Just in time! Bungalow, in Kiniya’s Junior Village, houses Lakeside, Meadowside and Riverside cabins. This year’s improvements included: totally new bathroom facilities for the 28 summer residents, reconstruction of bunks and the common area, re-siding exterior walls, new roofing, new windows and screens, and a complete repainting. Middlebury Pavilion at Dudley ————

It’s really happening! What began as a dream several years ago is becoming a reality. The Middlebury Outdoor Pavilion is now under construction and will be ready for the Summer of 2014.

The “Dudley Dome Performance Center” as some have called it, will offer a new venue for Wednesday night shows, movies, mass vespers, parent weekend gatherings and even Mellowfest. Financial support for this new gathering and performance space is coming from alumni of Middlebury College and Dudley, as well as a wonderful collection of friends and families who are supporters of the arts. The Pavilion was designed by #10793 Mike “Zeus”

Kiniya Challenge Course Coming for the Summer of 2014 ————————

A Kiniya Challenge Course is being designed now and will be ready for Summer 2014. The course will consist of a series of challenges and obstacles that can be completed by a group or set of partners. Challenge course elements require trust, communication, teamwork and some pretty serious problem-solving skills. The Kiniya course will be able to offer all of this to campers beginning in 2014. It will consist of activities that are close to the ground and high in the air. The elements are designed to offer girls (and boys) varying degrees of challenge that are age and skill appropriate. “The design team is carefully considering our existing programming, staff availability, and potential for growth as they create the Kiniya course.” Said Marnie, “It will be something special that supports how we help girls develop personal, physical, and leadership skills in a really fun way!” Watch the Dudley website and Facebook page for the announcement of the approved design.

Kiniya Dedications Two renovated facilities were dedicated in July at Camp Kiniya on Parent’s Day at the end of the first session. It was exciting to unveil the commemorative plaques for the Muhlhausen Leadership Cabin and the Lois P. Schmidt Memorial Chapel, in the presence of friends and family.

Muhlhausen Leadership Cabin Completely rebuilt after record flooding in 2011, Muhlhausen Cabin has patiently awaited the last part of its reconstruction process. Members of the Muhlhausen and Poler family and friends were on hand as the plaque honoring Mary Saylor “Mimi” Muhlhausen was revealed in its permanent location next to the front door. (insert plaque photo so text is legible) We are grateful to Dwight Poler and his family for making the Muhlhausen cabin reconstruction possible.

Following the Muhlhausen Cabin dedication, Marnie awarded Gail Poler (Mother of #11889 Dwight) with her 50-Year Pin! Gail attended Kiniya (as Gail MacVicar – from their summer place in Mallets Bay) in 1948, and is thrilled to see grand-daughter, #20489 Greta Poler, walking in her footsteps at Kiniya, thriving in the Leadership program at camp! Marnie dug out some old Kiniya brochures from the late 1940s and Gail was delighted to identify herself in two of the photos!

Lois P. Schmidt Memorial Chapel The renovated Lois P. Schmidt Memorial Chapel occupies the space that housed the traditional Camp Kiniya Chapel, symbolic of Lois’s commitment to helping Kiniya retain its own identity and traditions. Improvements in seating and other aspects of the physical location have allowed the Chapel to become a permanent part of the Kiniya Campus. Schmidt family and friends were on hand to celebrate Lois’s contribution to expanding Dudley’s mission. We are grateful to those who have made gifts in memory of Lois Schmidt.

was lucky enough to land a summer job at Camp Dudley at Kiniya for the summer of 2009. For the next two summers this luck continued with a long flight (18 hours, 8,000 miles) to and from South Africa. Finally my luck turned into fortune, when Marnie was able to secure an 18-month visa allowing me to stay two summers in a row! With so much going right, I expected life to taper out and cruise along happily at Camp; however, road trips and camp friends were too much of a pull to just stay put in Colchester. And so began the “Many Travels of Nick.” My family and friends from home were never quite sure where I was, but they knew I was enjoying my stay. It all started with a road trip down to Florida to fetch a boat…

This drive included several stops along the way, seeing #21141 Catherine Butler at Penn State, followed by a visit with #20113 Caroline Delaney and #20297 Chloe Potash at Wake Forest University, and continuing to University of South Carolina in Columbia to see the Marching Band drill field and #20050 Katie Grabowy. The final stop was Miami, FL, where I visited with #21001 Randy Breekner, currently stationed at the Coast Guard base there. Oh yea, and I picked up a boat for Kiniya in Maitland, FL. My travels continued across the pond to England in early February. In London, I hosted a mini reunion with the following staff members: #22374 Will Small, #22760 Alex Foster, #22356 Jack Beecroft, #22361 Salli Dixon, #22385 Emma Moran, #22762 Gergo Komjati and #22355 Alice Baldock. This reunion included a lot of singing and even a Kiniya cheer! Upon return I made a quick stop in New York to have dinner with #21013 Sarah “Bear” McDonough and #18555 Charlie Bolton Valley, VT O’Rourke.

After summer 2013, I started to plan out my next adventure. It started with a road trip from Phoenix to San Francisco with #23240 Nicole James. In Phoenix, #23168 Dee Smith, the first session Nurse at Kiniya, hosted us for dinner. We then drove north through the Grand Canyon, turning west to head through Las Vegas and straight to San Francisco to visit #20444 Hanna and #22774 Linda McPheron. After a quick visit with the McPherons, we continued on to our final stop in Los Angeles. Here we met up with fellow summer 2013 staffer #23166 Emily Millen.

Bungalow Gets a New Interior Look at As'one'of'Kiniya’s'oldest'and'most'beloved'cabins,'the'Bungalow' was'built'in'its'current'position'in'the'1930s.'Originally'designed'to' house'Kiniya’s'youngest'ageHgroup'of'Junior'campers,'the'Bungalow' has'two'separate'wings'housing'three'cabins:'Lakeside,'Meadowside' and'Riverside,'an'open'communal'gathering'space'in'between'the' two'wings,'and'a'bathroom'inside'which'is'shared'by'all'28'occuH pants. Marnie in the Lois Schmidt Memorial Chapel . . . a favorite spot at Kiniya. Fall 2014

Greetings From Kiniya, Pre-season training at Kiniya begins with a session titled: “History, Mission & Vision.” Our goal is simple: By looking back we are able to move forward – to make changes as well as to hold on to all that’s important. It reminds us to honor those who came before us – to recall their strength and determination. The highlight of the session is 12 minutes of live footage taken at Kiniya in 1936. We marvel at the changes in the natural landscape — the cedars and the pines that now tower above us were three feet tall at the time. But we are also struck by the similarities: the well traveled path down from the Welcome Center to Main Campus, the large rock at Senior Beach still marking our swim area, the road down to Junior Beach and Kitchen Hill. The girls could be from the summer of 2014; playing on the tennis courts, cooking over the campfire at Campcraft, roaming armand-arm from one activity to the next, piling into the camp vehicle for a trip. Their navy blue shorts and white button down shirt worn daily is the same uniform we wear for Sunday Chapel each week. The blue scarf tied around the neck of each leader is the same scarf we award our graduating AL’s - a symbol of reaching leader rank. One of the reasons I fell in love with Kiniya was its simplicity: the beauty of our surroundings and the importance of personal connections. Kiniya creates an atmosphere that encourages girls to try new things, share views, resolve problems, and step up to leadership. Girls learn through example, experience, and immersion to trust in themselves, to honor their worth and their contribution, and to move forward confidently, unafraid of the perceptions of others. None of this happens without regard to others. Communication, ethical behavior, and human kindness are at the heart of the Kiniya experience. These values are timeless — as much a part of 2014 as they were back in 1936. We owe much of today’s success to the strong female role models we’ve learned from and worked with throughout Camp’s history. Kiniya’s Expanded Outdoors Programming by #22406 Mollie Farnham, Outdoor Director Mollie and a friend on the high Challenge Course

t was a big year at Camp Dudley at Kiniya in the outdoors! For the first time in Kiniya’s history, campers, leaders and staff got to experience all that an educational challenge ropes course has to offer. Every cabin group attended four sessions together at the course, heightening their sense of adventure as well as exercising decision-making, comHigh Ropes Element munication, collaboration, interpersonal and leadership skills. Staff and leaders utilized the course for bonding and professional development as well, with glowing responses and calls for “more!” both pre and post-season. Aides Low Ropes Element spent a day on the course as part of their introductory leadership experience.

Two particular highlights of the course included the climbing tower and the giant swing. The climbing tower was utilized daily for the new-this-year rock climbing major. The tower has three sides, with various levels of difficulty, including overhangs and a crack climb. Girls raced to the top to set new records during Kiniya’s Records Day! The giant swing was the culminating element for all cabin groups as they successfully made their way through 2 low elements and a high circuit. The swing requires full group participation to give a thrilling ride to each group member. It brings home the experience of what The Giant Swing one can do with a supportive and functional team working together. Leader and Jr. D-head #20444 Hanna McPheron says, “I

can’t believe what an incredible asset the challenge course has become in just one summer at camp! Each summer the course will continue to expose campers, leaders, and staff to an incredible supportive environment in which you are physically pushed to conquer each obstacle and mentally grow in your own personal development.” Climbing majors learned form and technique and practiced on the wall, culminating in an off-site trip to Bolton Rocks, approx. 45 mins away in Bolton, VT. They excelled and found new challenges and tricks to climbing on granite!

Trips at Kiniya were led this year by the newly Wilderness First Aid-trained Leaders! This marks a time of increased skill and commitment from leaders, and all rose to the occasion. They successfully took all girls out into the Green Mountains and Adirondacks for either a 1-, 2- or 3-day hike or canoe experience. Highlights included a new trip to Kiniya’s lesser known “Moscow Property” near Stowe, VT, ideal for back-country camping — and a 3-day, 40-mile canoe trip from Long Lake to Tupper Lake with a 1 mile portage! Way to go Senior girls!!

The Kiniya Outdoor Barn (KOB for short) is a retro-fitted version of the stables and barn. Year-round Dudley/Kiniya staff and spring Work-weekenders helped demolish KOB (Kiniya Outdoor Barn) and refurbish the tack room (utilized for gear storage and organization), as well as five stalls. This opened up space for trip prep, and vans could pull right up to stall doors and load girls and gear. Kiniya introduced the Farmto-Plate major this summer! The garden was prepared in the spring by #22406 Mollie and #23606 Lizzie Bogosian a local educator, farmer, and beekeeper. The girls loved learning about the garden, contributing to its mainLearning about the garden. tenance, as well as making yummy dishes and snacks from the healthy organic harvest. #20005 Gail (Food Service Director, Head Chef) utilized fresh veggies and herbs in her dishes, and welcomed the girls to the kitchen twice each session to make fresh farm herb cheese and pizzas. Each girl left camp with a beautiful cookbook of things they had made over the course of the session. The bees were a sweet addition, sharing their honey and providing a living educational example of how important pollinators are to our food supply. Kiniya’s Camp Craft Major has been a thing of legend, highlighted by outdoors cooking. This summer it saw a revitalization to include learning about the local ecology, wild edibles and medicinals, and crafting like never before. Girls made salves and balms from olive oil infused with Plantain, lavender, and calendula. They learned to build fires using one match, as well as roasting bananas with chocolate (an essential back-country skill). Fall 2014

ince 1994, this man has served for 21 consecutive summers, under four different directors who have valued his passion and work ethic. A high school English teacher since graduating from Bowdoin College ’90, he also teaches film electives, serves as student advisor, and is a stellar coach. A three-sport varsity athlete at Bowdoin, he is a high school, club soccer, and Williams College varsity squash coach. Said Director Matt Storey, “Coaching is where he shines, whether for his own teams or running a clinic, it is instantly clear that this is what he is meant to do.” Congratulations, Blair! natural leader, Mary put a lot of thought into how she could best serve Kiniya as a staff member this summer before the application process even began. She is an honest, dependable and optimistic person whose presence would well serve any department area at Kiniya. Recognizing her passion for waterskiing, she expressed the desire to help rebuild a program that needed to be strengthened. She has always loved being on the water and always had a gift working with campers who are learning skills for the first time. Furthermore, Mary made the transition from leader to staff seamlessly. She has set a wonderful example for others who will inevitably make this same transition in years to come. Congratulations, Mary! Summer Highlights at KINIYA

he summer of 2014 was certainly one to remember on the shores of Lake Champlain in Colchester. Each year we look forward to the many traditions at Camp, and each year new memories are always created and even sometimes, new traditions are created. The best part of the summer is experiencing each and every day with the wonderful people of our Camp community. Our most-loved traditions continue to be highlights of each and every summer. On the third Friday of each session we celebrate our Kiwi campers and staff, welcoming 55 new Kiwis to our community. For the second year in a row we have concluded the Kiwi Ceremony with a dance ‘neath the pines. Our Saturday Night Shows blew us away with performances from campers, leaders and staff. This summer’s productions included, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Lion King, Eurydice and She Said, She Said guest directed by #10875 Steve Schmidt. (See page 24). #22389 Olivia Thompson-Bessett led the charge in the theater this summer and helped to execute our first-ever outdoor performance.

Waterskiing and our four new Pico sailboats were an exciting element in the Kiniya waterfront program this summer.

Both the Outdoors and Waterfront Department benefitted from great improvements this summer. Read more about our Outdoors Highlights, including new majors options, on page 12. On the waterfront, our staff and campers were thrilled with the addition of four brand new Pico sailboats. Sailing has always been such a big part of our waterfront program, and these new boats were perfect for both new and veteran sailors. In addition, waterskiing was reintroduced as part of our waterfront program with long time Kiniya-ite, #20203 Mary Piazza leading the way. Our boat was up and running and our Senior campers were able to have several opportunities to get up on skis.

Kiwi night, 1st session

A cabin upgrade in Senior Village was also a big highlight for our oldest campers. The new construction of Lower and Upper Loft allowed for increased enrollment by five campers and, with cabin Ark, has created a small little village of its own! Upper Loft leader, #20222 Courtney Granfors, coined the cabin’s new cheer, “Even though we’re on the ground, we’re still Upper Loft (clap, clap).” While there are so many highlights of Summer 2014, here are a few more that can’t be forgotten:

The 4th of July At our final banquet of the season, we moved indoors and held the ceremony in the Lodge. We sat facing the lake and as the sun set we celebrated everything our campers, leaders and staff had accomplished over the summer. We were all able to experience the wonderful feeling of being together as a full community, reflecting on our summer, one last time.

nder the directorship of #22389 Olivia Thompson-Bessett, the plays at Kiniya were exceptional this summer, with notable acting, directing and set production talent highlighted in campers, leaders and staff. As a special treat during Week 7, camp had a guest visit from professional screenwriter and director #10875 Steve Schmidt (father of camper #22875 Qi Mei and #20351 Telka Schmidt).

Steve adapted “She said She said” by David Ives for theatre in the round. Kiniya’s Lodge was transformed to spotlight the slightly elevated swiveling stage, with entryways for actors radiating from several directions. The series of four plays (described on the playbill as “Three strange comedies . . . and one little love story”), were exceptionally engaging. The first play, “Enigma Variations,” highlighted ideas of identity and communication. The second play, “Captive Audience,” addressed ideas of how we relate to each other

Magic! by #22406 Mollie Farnham while examining boundaries between what we “view” and what we can become. “Sure Thing,” the third play, explored how we present ourselves to others, either in hopes of finding meaningful acceptance and connection or seeking to be different. The fourth and last play, “The Green Hill” follows a young dreamer through the course of her “searching” and its effect upon the character’s life and relationships, and highlighted many talented campers.

These plays were characterized by witty, funny and fast-paced dialogue with a great soundtrack. The set and lighting (spotlight from the four corners of the Lodge and a swivel stage) were the perfect basics for good, classic theater. All the hard work juggling rehearsal and all other aspects of camp life really paid off as the cast and crew delivered a truly memorable show.

Food Service and the Dudley/Kiniya Program by #15017 Evan George and #22496 Mollie Farnham

eckman Hall is a pretty important place. It’s the one place on campus where everyone gathers every day . . . and we do it three times a day! Lots of great things happen in the dining hall . . . announcements, cheering, chapel talks, prayers, time spent with cabin mates, and, most importantly, eating! Lots of it!

It takes a lot of coordination and effort on the part of many people during the summer to make each meal happen, but that preparation is months in the making, especially now that all of our food service is done inhouse under the leadership of #14962 Josh Olcott. Camp’s decision to go back to an in-house food service was driven primarily by a desire to give the boys a more delicious and nutritious experience at each meal. However, it was also a logical decision given the fact that the Dudley campus sits in the center of a burgeoning small farm movement in the Champlain Valley. We now buy much of our produce from these farms and it is a “game changer” for their ability to grow and remain viable (see article about Dudley’s Local Food, page 36). However, it’s not without its challenges. Our desire to maximize the amount of locally grown food served at both camps means we need to have

a greater level of planning and communication with farmers. The volume of food consumed each summer means that we need to start coordinating months in advance of the summer to make sure that our needs are met. In addition, when farms end up with surpluses we are now in a unique position to purchase those items and use them to prepare food for next summer. For example, Josh and his team spent much of their time this fall using the bumper crop of local tomatoes to cook and can spaghetti sauce and ketchup for the summer of 2015. #20005 Gail Coleman, director of food service at Kiniya, continues to provide delicious meals with the same mission to girls at Kiniya. Gail has forged relationships with several local farmers on the Vermont side of the lake, many within miles of Kiniyaâ€™s campus. Gail has also been contributing to planning for expanding the Kiniya gardens (with the essential aid of the Farm-toPlate majors), with the goal of bolstering production to more significantly supply the kitchen. Gail also continues to serve the Vermont Camping Association during the off-season by providing meals at events and meetings.

By having food service that is integrated within our campuses and local communities, it allows us to more fully realize our mission in all we do. By using more fresh and local vegetables that taste good and are also good for us, we underline our commitment to a balanced, healthy lifestyle. And, hey, maybe a few more boys and girls will eat more of their vegetables!

part of the trip. In Lincoln, Nebraska, we visited a church where 50 people with mental disabilities were anxiously awaiting the JOH dance party. That night I had the privilege to dance with one wonderful lady. Although she could not talk, her sparkling eyes showed me that even simple actions can bring great joy. Throughout the adventure, I was overjoyed to see the Dudley motto used daily. To witness something I thought could only be practiced within the “Dudley Bubble” was too powerful for words. I learned that passion is a powerful tool. If you put your love and time into something, what you get back is worth the hard work. I’m sad the Journey is over, but happy to share my story of “The Other Fellow First.” The Dudley community has helped me get where I am today and achieve the goal of cycling across America.” Well done, Jake.

Jasmine Victoria, Austin, TX, came to Kiniya in the late ’90s through Community

Partner, Prep-for-Prep. A graduate of the Chapin School and Duke University, she wrote; “Today was a very special day for me visiting the Hamlin Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This place, and the woman who built it, are the reason why I am starting my nonprofit. Several months ago, one of my co-workers at Glimmer brought the film “A Walk to Beautiful” to work. The film struck me so deeply and profoundly, I knew I had to do something to help end the suffering of these innocent women. Her Birthright is founded on the belief that every woman has the right to bring a child into this world safely and without suffering a life of unimaginable shame and pain. The safe haven that Dr. Catherine Hamlin has created for these women is nothing short of a miracle. The grounds are so beautiful and calming, it’s no wonder that women are flocking here to be healed. She has created a community where women can feel human again – where they can feel loved and know that someone cares about what happens to them. Surrounded by lovely manicured lawns and flower beds, white washed walls and stone paths, the women lounge around the compound in clusters, cloaked in colorful hand knit blankets, clearly relieved to have found solace in the company of their fellow sisters. Perhaps the most difficult moment for me was when I watched a little girl who looked to be about 9 or 10 years old, playing with a group of women who had an adorable little baby . . . I watched her for about five minutes before realizing she was also a fistula patient. The thought that someone so young, with a body so frail and still developing, could already know such unspeakable pain is heartbreaking to me. Dave Dewey, a K9 handler extraordinaire with the Colchester, VT, Police Department, works with the security detail during the summer at Camp Kiniya to ensure that our campers remain safe. Dave is also a member of the Vermont Police Canine Association and the coordinator of Vermont’s Green Mountain Iron Dog Competition. Each fall, Kiniya hosts this 1.5 mile obstacle race, which welcomes military, police, and civilian competitors and their dogs. Visiting camp during the Iron Dog Competition is nothing short of magnificent. The more than 100 dogs and their owners get to discover the magic of camp in a slightly different way. We are grateful to Dave for his contributions to Camp Kiniya and his community and are pleased to support our friends in this effort. Pinecrest Cabin Scheduled for Extensive Renovation Pinecrest cabin at Kiniya will be undergoing a major renovation/restoration project this winter and spring. A tighter, more snug and homey version of the Junior cabin will be ready for the summer of 2015! Many girls have called this “my first cabin” at Kiniya since its original construction in 1940. It was aptly named due to its proximity to “the Pines.” Here are the major parts of the renovation: sink facilities

The cabin will retain its large gathering space in the main sleeping quarters to support vespers and other cabin gatherings. The renovation of Pinecrest is made possible by a generous gift from #12731 David and Catherine Willmott. Thank you, David and Catherine!

2014 Kiniya NOLS

Kiniya girls explore the great outdoors on the first-ever “girls only” NOLS trip, Wind Rivers mountains in Wyoming.

This rock-star group of young women, led by #20076 Anne Kennedy, met at Kiniya opening day and began their mental and logistical preparations. NOLS Alumni #21141 Catherine Butler (who was Staff 2014 as Kiniya’s Challenge Course manager) led the group through some low element team-building exercises to begin the process of getting to know each other. Many conversations about what to expect were had, including “tips lessons” passed down from Alumnae Class of 2013 campers #22088 Chandler Ryan, #22320 Emma White, #21669 Maggie Dolan, #22287 Paige Johnson, #21827 Rebecca Riley in a collegeal document titled, “Things we wish we had known.” This and many other things were discussed in anticipation of the big trip itself. It seemed the young ladies slept lightly the night before their flight, filled with anticipation about what challenges and adventures lay before them. These young women came back with stories of struggle and accomplishment, and how they got used to living well with less! A grand welcome awaited them at Camp Kiniya, where they shared stories of their adventures backpacking, navigating, leading, climbing and much more. Highlights included M&M pancakes, singing hymns on trail, rock-climbing camp, and getting to travel with their “brothers” from Dudley.

This year there was so much interest in the NOLS (National Outdoor Leadersip School) Leadership Development trip to the Wind River mountains in Wyoming that an all-girls group was formed.

Obituaries Camp Kiniya’s Marilyn “Mimi” Williams Marilyn P. Williams, age 87, died peacefully at home in Colchester, VT, on September 19, 2014. She and her husband Jack owned and operated Camp Kiniya for more than 50 years. Born in Tianjin, China in June, 1927, Marilyn (Mimi) was the daughter of the late Colonel Joel D. Pomerene and Agnes (Bartlett) Pomerene and the younger sister of her beloved brother, Robert. Mimi’s early years were rich in travel as the family followed her father’s postings around the globe. Living in China, Panama, Hawaii, Washington, Montana, Georgia and Pennsylvania gave her an extraordinary experience and contributed to the strength that she later exhibited in her life’s work.

Mimi pursued a college education at Penn State where she was both an athlete and member of Kappa Alpha Theta. Mimi then moved to Washington, D.C. where she met her husband of 64 years, John (Jack) H. Williams. Mimi and Jack were married in New Hope, PA, in 1950 and a year later, embarked on their life’s work, running Kiniya, a camp for girls on Lake Champlain. With warmth and good listening skills, Mimi became an adoptive mother to thousands of girls who spent their formative years at Camp. Williams (Jim Curlis) of Delaware, OH, and Anne Doremus (Greg) of Shelburne, VT, and their children; Jeffrey and Theodore, and sons Kyle D. Williams (Colleen) of Colchester and their children; Mathew, Kevin and Aidan and John (Jay) H. Williams and his daughter Teah; and Marilyn’s niece, Antoinette Pomerene and nephew, Robert Pomerene. Mimi also leaves behind the thousands of girls for whom she served as an excellent role model, adoptive mother and confidante for 56 years. Her grace, dry sense of humor and love will be sorely missed. The Williams family would like to thank caregivers Nancy Downey, Barbara Carpenter, Deb Hayes and Hillary DesNoyers, and the Hospice team at the VNA – all of whom helped ease Mimi’s last months. A private memorial service celebrating Mimi’s happy life will be held at a later date.

Hikes and paddling excursions to new and old sites await, and campers will be greeted with the friendly faces of alumni as well as some new (and more!) outdoor staff. Dear Friends of Camp, I will never forget the image of Mimi Williams sitting at her desk in the sunny Kiniya office within their home. Strategically sited overlooking the tennis courts and fields below, Mimi loved the warmth of the afternoon sun and the evening sunset. Just steps away would be Jack at his beautiful, heavy cherry desk looking out toward the upper fields. There he took in the morning sun, monitored the busy bird feeders, and spent countless hours overseeing every aspect of Kiniya. Each person entering the Williams home would be met with a warm “Good Morning” or “Hello” coming from the office, where Mimi was working on her latest correspondence with a Kiniya family. Her personal touch was in every letter. She acknowledged each with a handwritten Jack and Marilyn Williams with Marnie and sister note, always with a personal PS. Every issue of the Alumnae News and Sally McDonagh in 2000. Kiniya Record was typed by Mimi and taken to the local printers to be photocopied for distribution. Jack’s annual notebooks were meticulous, with a full accounting of every camper enrolled, tuition payments made, and expenses incurred. He was a masterful businessman and, with Mimi’s personal touch, they were an incredible team. Marilyn and Jack knew every aspect of the Kiniya Operation. They not only knew every camper who came through the gates, but a unique story about each one — their hometown, their parents, their interests and their talents. As noted in the Fall 2014 CD News, Mimi passed away last September at the age of 87. A small group of family and friends celebrated her life on October 25th. Jack passed away at the age of 90 . . . just twelve days later. After spending every day together for 64 years of their marriage — 51 years as co-owners of Kiniya — it seems that spending two months apart was long enough. Recently some treasures emerged from our rich Kiniya archives which can be found on page 26, including handwritten notes, old brochures and newsletters. While Kiniya has fully embraced technology, it is comforting to know that there is such continuity between the old and the new. While our website and social media platforms are just one click away — our fundamental message of the past nine decades remains constant. I think that Jack and Mimi Williams would be pleased with today’s operation . . . that the experience Kiniya provides girls today remains inspiring; that it is camper-centered and mission-driven; and that our pursuit of excellence is fueled by creativity, curiosity and flexibility. Most importantly, I think they’d be pleased to know that we have not lost sight of the importance of genuine conversation and enduring relationships. As we look ahead to the many possibilities for our exceptional camps, I am both thankful for, and humbled by, the strong foundation on which we can build. Jack and Marilyn Williams

Jean Stowell, nurse extraordinaire!

When I was in Pinga, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo working with Doctors Without Borders this past year, I spent countless hours on the back of a motorbike traveling through unbelievable muddy and arduous paths in the jungle. I thought a lot during those rides – about the people I served there, who live under the umbrella of violence and a level of chaos unimaginable to most of us. I thought about how lucky I was to work alongside some exceptional colleagues. I thought about reading Heart of Darkness in high school, a book about the mysterious, dangerous jungle of Congo, and how many twists and turns carried me to that very place twenty some years later – this year for the second time. I was barely even aware back then that Congo was a real place with real people. But sometimes, I thought, on those arduous trips, about camp, too . . . what I might want to say to you if I was standing here again some summer, giving a Chapel Talk. There are things I wish I knew, way back when I was 12 and 15 and 20 . . . struggling to find myself, like perhaps some of you are. I was often afraid to do anything that would make me stand out in a way that might make me look weird or uncool. I was nervous for a long time I wouldn’t do things exactly “right.” By choosing the wrong college, the wrong major, the wrong paths . . . because absolutely everyone knows the wrong major can completely ruin the rest of your life! Word of advice: Thankfully, it does NOT! Once, when I was 22, I turned down an opportunity to be a nanny in Paris for an American family for a year because I thought it was more responsible to use my nursing degree. Plus, I’d just bought my first car and I didn’t speak a word of French. (Remember the French part. It will come up later, because nothing ever goes away until it teaches us what we need to know.) Sadly, we don’t get a chance to talk to our younger selves, which is somewhat unfortunate because it turns out . . . you learn some cool stuff over the years. Some years ago, I read this sentence in a column – I no longer remember who wrote it, but it forever changed my perspective. “I am not usually aware that I am happy, but I often know I have been.” Do not let this happen. Never let a chance to truly notice when you are filled with joy. Just the act of noticing will make you more present in the moment. When you really pay attention like this, your heart might tell you something important. Joy like this may happen for you at strange and sporadic times. Sometimes, it will happen on the summit of a mountain or after a particularly difficult accomplishment. But it might simply be as you drive alone down the highway, a sky deep and cloudless blue, and with just the perfect song playing on the radio. These will be times when life feels like – just for a moment – like it’s all falling into place. Really notice this. Memorize this feeling, even if you forget the memory itself. Memories are strange, elusive things and some of the best ones fade a little bit over time. Some of the girls on my canoe trip this session might remember what I call

“go to memories.” There are going to be times in your life, as I mentioned, where everything is exactly as it should be, for whatever reason. Hopefully, you have had a moment or two like this at camp this summer. Take a snapshot of these moments with your heart. You will need them sometimes — these “go to” memories. You will need them to give you courage, to make you laugh, to give you strength to make leaps of faith. Before standing up here this morning, because public speaking is one of my least favorite things on earth, I reminded myself of a speech I gave to our staff in Congo just a couple of months ago at my going away party . . . in somewhat imperfect but very heartfelt French! I have a container of cool rocks at home. I have picked them up around the US and the rest of the world over many years. This is a piece of volcanic rock from the piste (trail) in Pinga, to be added into the mix next week. In that bowl is one from Kiniya’s beach as well . . . sometimes it surprises me I can’t remember anymore exactly where each one came from. When I look into that bowl, I am overwhelmed with how many irreplaceable experiences are contained in those memories even though I can’t always identify them in a linear way. I wish this for you too, as you remember your summer here at camp: that it be a jumble of laughter and challenges and pride and love and trust. I’m going to charge you with a couple of challenges this year. Say yes to at least one invitation to do a thing that scares you because it is unfamiliar. Say no to something too, if it doesn’t feel right at the time. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be alone. In fact, being comfortable being alone is an important life skill. You will, over time, figure out this balance if you listen to your heart. Practice saying yes to yourself. The second thing I encourage you to do is to make a list of things you want to do . . . a so-called “bucket list.” Some of you have already started these, and I absolutely love hearing your ideas! Maybe yours will be 20 before 20, 30 before 30, even 100 things before 100. Dream big when you do this — but think close to home too. Among things on my current list are to ice climb in the Canadian Rockies, learn to make sourdough bread, teach my nephew to ski, and write a thank you letter to a high school teacher who inspired me. Look at your list over the years from time to time and make changes if you want to. There are no penalties for not finishing but you will be amazed at what happens when you put your intentions on paper! I assure you . . . when I wrote this list several years ago. I had absolutely no idea that I would be leaving for India in late October, to work for the next nine months. Number nineteen: go to India . . . check. You will probably forget all of this right after breakfast. Maybe you should. The hardest, hugest, most beautiful work for each of us is to make our own way in the world, and this involves making our own choices, our own mistakes. So let me simply make a promise, one that I am absolutely positive is true for each one of you, and maybe even still for me. The best things you’re ever going to do . . . you haven’t even dreamed of yet.

#22375 Jean Stowell presented this chapel talk at Kiniya in 2012. Originally from Burlington, VT, she has an M.S. in Nursing, is a Family Nurse Practitioner and certified Midwife. She has also served with Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) providing medical aid to those most in need in some of the world’s most difficult places. When on summer break, she has served as Nurse at Kiniya.

Brinley has a wealth of experience as a coach and teacher at St. Luke’s School in New Canaan, CT, and brings a passion for tennis, archery and field hockey to the team. Kissy and Brinley are excited to add more coaching clinics to Choice Time offerings to allow those girls focused on a particular sport the opportunity to strengthen their skills. We’re recruiting our line up of instructors for all sports currently and are excited to get working on the preparations!

Our Arts Team is excited to offer the best possible programs in our much loved facilities: The Treiber Arts Center, The Music Studio and The Lodge. recipient of The Spirit Recognition in 2014, will be returning this summer for her 12th year as Head of Waterfront. NOLS Staff Trip s we enter into our 4th summer with our NOLS/ Dudley partnership, we couldn’t be more proud of where we’ve been and where we are going. This summer we’ll send more than 40 young leaders into the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming to further their leadership training. Another exciting fact is that we have 41 members of this summer’s leadership team at Dudley and 14 at Kiniya that have graduated from one of our NOLS programs. That’s a remarkable number of which we are very proud. “What’s next?” Marnie and Matt asked themselves last fall during the season ending review. They realized that they would truly benefit from their own Dudley/Kiniya Staff Leadership trip, and in March, ten managers on the yearround team headed to Tucson, AZ, for a week-long backpacking expedition. They focused on topics such as Leadership, Teamwork, Wilderness Skills, Risk Management, and Environmental Impact, while getting first-hand knowledge of the

NOLS program that so many of our young leaders are encountering. The group attending is currently functioning at a high level, but we believe that they can become even stronger managers, and the leadership trip will allow them to do just that. “Each of us was challenged in a way that we were unaccustomed to, and each of us had to live outside of our comfort zone, which is something we ask of our entire community each summer. To partner with NOLS on yet another wonderful leadership program is very exciting,” said Matt.

Winter Construction Projects “What do you guys do up there all winter?” is a question that we hear occasionally. Well, making sure that two camps are full, capable leaders and summer staff are recruited, scholarship funds are available, and that both campuses are in top shape are things that don’t happen by accident! The maintenance teams in Westport and Colchester work 12 months a year, in all kinds of weather to assure a top flight physical plant. Leaf raking, building closings and openings, winterization (water fountains don’t do well in sub zero Champlain weather!), snow plowing, and spring playing field preparation are ongoing tasks. THE GREATEST KINIYA TREASURE by #20001 Marnie McDonagh

In search of inspiration for this year’s Open House Tour, I came across the most incredible treasure in Kiniya’s Archives – an original brochure from 1928, approaching Kiniya’s 10th Season! The brochure begins by stating: The Camp’s purpose lies in its name for Kiniya, which means “to inspire,” “to recreate.”

As we approach Kiniya’s 10th summer as a part of the Dudley family, I have found great comfort in knowing that there are many similarities between the experience of 1928 and the one we share today.

• Some of the happiest hours of the summer are often spent singing, dancing, rehearsing plays, playing games or enjoying more quietly an evening fire. And no atmosphere fosters better camp friendships and group spirit. It’s so nice to circle back to our founding years and realize that there are a lot of similarities between the “now and then.”

In the 1960s girls hauled all materials by hand to build a traditional salt-box cabin, complete with bunks. During this time remembers driving girls up to the trailhead in a VW bus with provisions for several days. They enjoyed time exploring and practicing outdoor skills in the beautiful surroundings.

While this property has been used lightly in the last few years for base-camping to ascend to The Long Trail and “The Forehead” of Mt. Mansfield, it will become a hub of activity for our Junior campers this coming summer as they begin a new tradition of cabin overnights! The old cabin (fondly referred to now as “the old creepy cabin”) has been removed by our year-round team, and will be replaced with tent platforms. Led by their wonderful leaders, our Junior campers can look forward to a beautiful and peaceful introduction to camping in the Green Mountains.

The rank of Junior Leader at Dudley and Kiniya is pretty special because it’s the first year that our young men and women are actual “employees.” It’s also a big step for our Leadership Development Program as the participants begin to truly understand what an important role they play in the success of our two camps. For this reason, we set aside weekends in early-mid March (one for Kiniya and one for Dudley) to get our new crop of JLs on campus for a fun-packed weekend of leadership development and training. Conversations focus on understanding leadership styles, basic principles of child development, and some good old-fashioned fellowship and fun. A guaranteed outcome is that these Junior Leadership teams begin to develop for the summer while strong bonds of friendship are built among these young people.

Kiniya girls enjoying the lake. Dear Friends, I had the pleasure of hiking up to our Moscow Property, south of Stowe, VT, with Cabin Vanneman this summer. Walking side-by-side up the 1-mile trail with 10-year-old campers, we stopped to appreciate the beauty of the waterfall and rock pool at the trail’s edge. As we rested, the youngest of the group remarked: “This is the most magical place I’ve ever seen!” A half century ago, the original Moscow cabin was constructed as a service project by Kiniya’s oldest campers. Re-tracing their footsteps up to the campsite created a connection between the generations. This summer, for the first time, our Moscow Property became the site of not only our youngest camper overnights, but also a location for additional leadership development opportunities. Most recently, we held our year-round staff team-building adventure here in September. The site has been groomed and new tent platforms constructed. Rock paths have been created and a fireplace and seating area has been developed. It truly is magical!

Kiniya will continue to provide a life-changing camp experience for girls. Whether it’s a summer camp session, a Leadership Training Weekend, a NOLS Experience, a Cultural Exchange Program, or a Cabin Overnight to Moscow, the Kiniya experience will be of the highest quality and provide a safe, nurturing environment that fosters growth and independence. Our Strategic Vision Statement, adopted this past spring by the Board of Trustees, guides our work and our priorities as we prepare for 2016. It will also inspire and guide organizational growth over the next five years.

Kiniya Highlights It wouldn’t be summer without Kiwi day, Hymn Sing, 7-layer bars, and hanging out with friends ‘neath the pines. Each summer, we can count on these things when we arrive at Kiniya. We look forward to celebrating with “Dear Old Pals”, making new friends, and experiencing new adventures with a new cabin group. However, these are not the things that distinguish each summer from the next. The wonderful group of people who all experienced summer 2015 together have so much to look back on that made it one for the history books...

The Arts

Athletics

Our multi-talented staff kicked off the summer by offering up their skills to change up our arts major offerings. To highlight a few, #23163 Bogi Cser offered jewelry making, #24024 Ryan Morin offered poetry in motion, and #24030 Scout Fox offered costume design. Costume design found ways to help out the Arts Department each week by focusing on preparing costumes for the Saturday Night Shows. We also enjoyed weekly Wednesday Night Show visits from “Shelly and Mom”, and various performances of “the whip.”

If you were to arrive on campus around 11:00 am any given morning, you would hear the loudest, most enthusiastic, cheering coming from all directions. The Assistant DHeads led the charge, building excitement from day one, working towards the end of session Championship Games. When the time came, all teams were decked out in colors, costumes, and facepaint. The spirit was at an all time high and the sportsmanship and teamwork were notable.

The Outdoors The outdoors program continues to improve each and every summer. Our trips took us hiking in the Greens, canoeing in the Adirondacks, and climbing throughout Vermont. This year our maintenance and outdoors team overhauled our property in Moscow, Vermont, near Stowe. This property now has three tent platforms to house our youngest campers for their first Kiniya overnight experience. Cabins head out during afternoon activities, cook dinner, camp out, and return in the morning after breakfast. We were thrilled to offer this opportunity to girls in cabins Cady, Vanneman, Willmott, and Casbah.

Spirituality We are fortunate to have such a program in place that helps us set the tone for each day. We always look forward to the stories and experiences shared during morning Chapel Talks and use it as a tool to guide us through the day and sometimes even to discuss at evening vespers. Our Sundays continue to be a highlight for all and this year we welcomed wonderful speakers to help us celebrate our time together. See page 26 for this summer’s chapel speakers. It was wonderful to have our very own #20595 Kat Nelson leading our joyous Hymn Sing each week.

As our 10th summer came to a close, we found ways to make summer 2015 as memorable as possible. We even began a new tradition to close each sessionâ€™s Awards Ceremony. Following the ceremony, the entire camp walked out into the open fields of Kiniya for our Lantern Launch.

10! At the end of each summer for the past 131 years, homes around the country and world have been filled with stories about Dudley. Men and boys have found connections over shared memories that transcend generations and withstand the test of time. For the first time in Dudleyâ€™s history, this past decade has also brought the voices of girls to these same conversations, and in so doing, strengthened the connections between father and daughter, brother and sister, grandparent and grandchild. But it has done more than just strengthen connections within families. The Dudley/Kiniya partnership has strengthened our entire community and reinforced the values we hold dear. It is hard to believe that itâ€™s been ten years since we opened the gates as Camp Dudley at Kiniya in June, 2006! Looking back, there is much to celebrate!

This summer, we spent time looking back; talking about growth, discussing how and why we’ve changed, recognizing where we’ve come from, and appreciating the work of those who came before us. We did so while acknowledging that we all play a part in Kiniya’s future and that we have an opportunity as a community to impact future generations of girls. In looking back, we recognized the many blessings of the last decade and the gifts we have received from Camp Dudley – the gifts of Friendship, Music, Shared Vision, Generosity, and Leadership. In recognition of these gifts, we presented Camp Dudley with the Kiniya Spirit Yearbook Dedication as a symbol of our appreciation. Said Marnie, “We will forever be grateful to Camp Dudley for having the vision and wisdom to include girls in our mission – creating an experience with a foundation of kindness and love.”

To mark the end of our 10th summer, the girls of Kiniya created a Time Cap36 trips went out, the longest sule to be buried for the next 10 years and unearthed in 2025. The silver box sat at the base of our Chapel Talk Podium in the Kiniya Dining Hall for the last of which was our Senior Village week of 2nd session and over these seven days it was filled with notes, drawings, 3-day experience. Ten years poems, wishes for the future and treasures from members of our 2015 commuago, trips were optional and one nity. On the last day of 2nd session, the Time Capsule was buried. As we laid went out each week – 7 trips total! the box into position, we read “A Love Letter to our Future Selves” intended to be read again when the box is unearthed in 2025. Campers in attendance remarked that they hope to still be at Camp then – some of them in fact will be leaders! It opened up a wonderful opportunity to talk about the future and to imagine where we’ll all be 10 years from now. No surprise, all in attendance hope to be back at Camp to re-open our box of treasures! For now, conversations have returned to our homes as boys and girls recount their summer stories to their families. Connections between genders and across generations continue to strengthen as the new memories are shared with the old.

Willmott Cabin and Challenge Course Dedications Willmott Cabin — As part of Kiniya’s long range capital and facilities plan, upgrades and renovations of our Cabins have been a very high priority. #12731 David and Catherine Willmott of Portland, OR, took a particular interest in this when their daughter #23331 Anne Wylly Willmott became a Kiniya camper. In July, we dedicated Willmott Cabin, the 14th of the 16 Kiniya cabins to have been completely renovated or rebuilt. At the ceremony, David Willmott said: “Catherine and I were inspired by Marnie’s leadership and the significant investment in the Kiniya facilities by numerous Dudley families over the past 10 years. Our hope is that our gift might encourage others to help fund the Kiniya strategic plan in coming years. We truly believe that the Camp Dudley at Kiniya program is world class and would benefit even further from enhanced and upgraded facilities. We were honored to be able to make this gift in the name of the four generations of Willmotts who have been positively influenced by Dudley.” Said Director Marnie McDonagh, “I cannot tell you how much this gift has meant to us as a community. It continues to inspire others as we spread the word about Kiniya and Dudley’s capital needs. It has already

had a direct impact on 22 very happy little girls this summer and will, for countless summers ahead. Thank you, David and Catherine!”

Kiniya Challenge Course — On Saturday, August 15th, Marnie, Kat and Mollie were joined by the Outdoor Staff and DHeads to celebrate the Hung/Lambo family for their gift of the Kiniya Challenge Course and Climbing Tower. Thanks to the generosity of this three-generation family of women, every camper - staff member now has the opportunity to benefit from the use of this state-of the-art facility, providing girls with the opportunity to increase self-confidence, improve social skills, communication and leadership skills. As written on the plaque: “In honor of the inspiring women in each one of our lives: May we know them, May we raise them, May we be them,” the Kiniya Challenge Course is made possible through the generosity of three generations of women: Grandmother - Nancy Hung, Mother - Eileen Lambo and Daughter - Mia #20898 Lambo.” If you are interested in underwriting one of the two remaining camper cabins at Kiniya, Casbah and Hernandos, please contact Dave@campdudley.org.

GERMANY GERMANY This summer 12 of our finest headed to Germany and Camp Abensen with co-leaders Matt McCormick and Elena Licursi for the camper exchange. The trip included a homestay, a round-trip tour of several cities in Germany, as well as nearly 2 weeks at Camp Abbensen in Hanover. Next summer the Germans will be campers at Dudley and Kiniya. SPAIN This was the first ever exchange trip to Spain for our camps. 4 young men and 2 young women joined Leader Martha McKinley for homestays in Valencia, 2 weeks at a YMCA camp in Priego outside of Madrid, and several days of tourism based out of Madrid.

NOLS | AZ NOLS | AZ Matt, Marnie and 8 members of our Campsâ€™ management team traveled to Tuscon, Arizona for an 8-day leadership trip in March. The trip had all of the similar elements of our NOLS Leadership trips that our boys and girls take, and each team member benefited from the leadership development opportunity. NOLS | WY We sent 4 full trips this summer to the Wind River Mountain Range of Wyoming for our annual Leadership trips. Boys and girls ages 14-17 spent 23 days on the trail backpacking, climbing and fly fishing their way across the remarkable terrain. This was the 4th year for the NOLS partnership. Additionally, we had 50+ young leaders back on campus who had completed a NOLS course in past summers.

How fortunate our boys and girls are to grow and play and thrive in facilities like ours! All cared for with tremendous pride in preparation for each coming summer. New coats of paint, new roofs, new siding, new windows and doors preserve buildings that have been a part of our campus for decades. And, new structures have been added to support our growing program needs - the Middlebury Pavilion at Dudley and the Challenge Course at Kiniya are a fine example of this!

Between 2008 - 2015, thanks to the generosity of the Cady family, 228 9-year old Kiniya Campers have called Cady Cabin their home!

In thinking about the many people who have made our campus what it is today, we wanted to take a step back in time and recognize the first plaque to have been installed at Kiniya - Cady Cabin. The planning and permitting of the building construction took well over a year to finalize and in the summer of 2008 nine very lucky campers supported by a leadership team of three called it home. The cabin was dedicated in July of 2008 to the loving memory of Elizabeth (Betsy) Cady, 1953-1963. #8798 Al Cady, III said that day “My sister Betsy was just 9 years old when she died of leukemia. It makes our family very happy to know that lots of 9-year old girls

The first plaque to appear on the Westport campus steps back in time a little further. The Avery Boat House was completed in November 1913 and dedicated in August of 1914. It is the oldest original building on that campus and was made possible by a gift from Mr. Samuel Avery. At that time Dudley was permanently located at its current site and canoeing and boating were favorite pastimes. In its original configuration, the upstairs of the Boat House was a Library with a spectacular fireplace. Today the historic structure remains and has been fortified to better weather the wind, waves and ice from Lake Champlain. The structure now serves as a camper cabin and is still considered “prime real estate.” The magnificent views from its upper porch inspire boys and leaders as they have for decades. The plaques that commemorate our heritage each tell stories of generous support and incredible fun and friendship.

Dear Friends,

Each year, I am grateful for a professional development opportunity through the American Camping Association’s National Conference. As part of this larger camp community, we learn how other camps operate. This, in turn, helps us see things a bit differently while changing our perspective in subtle ways. No matter how different our camps, our missions, and our philosophies, there is always something to learn from other organizations that stirs our creativity and brings new insights to leading our Camps. For me, that is very exciting! This year, the conference was held in Atlanta, GA, where I also had the honor of touring the recently opened National Center for Civil and Human Rights with #11320 Steve Lutz. The Center’s tagline, “Inspiration Lives Here,” comes to life through an interactive, immersive experience presenting civil and human rights issues in different contexts: current vs. historical, domestic vs. international, local vs. worldwide. The Center brilliantly marries events of the past with current struggles around the world and convinces you that you can make a difference! As Steve and I walked from room to room, we paused on inspirational quotes emblazoned on the walls. We both immediately felt the connection to the Dudley and Kiniya experience. In particular, I was drawn to this:

group – to take possessive investment in each others’ struggles where whatever is happening to them is happening to us.” Isn’t this the premise of “The Other Fellow First”? As outlined in Camp’s 2020 Vision Strategic Plan, the greatest responsibility we have as a community is to preserve, maintain, and enhance our beloved Camps. In doing so, we recognize that we come together each summer from widely varied backgrounds and with different stories to share. The only true way to create a fully open and supportive community is to commit ourselves to values of equality and respect all the time, every day. A community that cares deeply about the safety and happiness of every person is by definition a wonderful place for our campers to grow and thrive! Kiniya has much to be thankful for – a breathtakingly beautiful campus, a dedicated leadership team and staff, loyal campers, parents, grandparents and friends and an extremely capable Board. As a team, we work together to foster an inclusive and welcoming community for all. We are so grateful to all of those who have so generously contributed to our past and invite you to visit this summer because INSPIRATION LIVES HERE!

At Camp Dudley and Camp Kiniya, we are committed to creating a culture of sustainability through educational programming, healthy living, environmental stewardship, and responsible business practices in our campuses and communities. 1

Sustainability Steps Achieved: 1. Summer 2015 saw the completion of the Dudley compost building. Hundreds of pounds of food scraps were turned into nutrient rich soil for the garden (as opposed to becoming sludge in a landfill). The Senior Division helped Jeff Schwoebel maintain the pile as part of their service. 2. Dudleyâ€™s solar panel power generation, carbon offset, and cost savings are now tracked online. Since April they generated over 21,000 kilowatts, offset CO2 emissions (equivalent to driving 34,454 miles, or planting 213 trees) and saved a total of $1,260! 3. The farm-to-table major continues to be popular! Campers learn to grow, harvest and cook delicious organic veggies. Onion rings, French fries and personal pizza are a few favorites. 4. Green Mountain Compost takes all scraps and leftovers from the Kiniya dining hall and hosted the farm-to-plate major for a tour of their industrial facility. Amidst steaming piles of nutrient-rich soil (they decompose meat and dairy too!) our campers discovered just how valuable and fun dirt can be. 5. Kiniyaâ€™s bees brought liquid-sunshine honey to the table and pollination expertise to the fields once again. With the honey bee world wide population down 90% due to nasty pesticides, we are doing our part to keep populations healthy. 6. Did you know Kiniyaâ€™s point is a protected beach and very important nesting site for the endangered spiny softshell turtle? This year VT Wildlife specialists found 33 undisturbed nests with 49 observed hatchlings.

Winter Updates By #20001 Marnie McDonagh

While many have been disappointed in the lack of snow in Vermont this winter, our Maintenance crew has been delighted with warmer than usual temperatures that have carried us through January! The Kiniya Team have been hard at work on a number of major projects, scheduled for completion well ahead of Opening Day! Thanks to the generosity of both the family of an alumnus and the family of a current Board Member, the last two of our camper cabins in need of renovations, Casbah (1) and Hernandos (2), have been demolished and work is underway for brand new cabins to take their place. We’re thrilled that in 2016 every camper will live in a cabin that has been renovated within the last decade! In addition to the cabin renovations, our Kiniya Maintenance Crew is building a new Publications Department (3) from the ground up! This 12’x12’ building will house our photo and video equipment and provide a private office space essential to creating Wednesday Night Slideshows and The Spirit Publication. This is thanks to a very generous gift from another member of the Kiniya community.

Hanna and Phoebe are thrilled to be working together again this summer and have already started planning ganzas, council rings, and more!

Dear Friends, On October 9th, I opened Sunday’s Burlington Free Press to discover an article, “In the Good Old Summertime: Boys and Girls Camps of Malletts Bay.” It recapped the history of several camps, including Kiniya, located on this beautiful 27-mile stretch of Lake Champlain. The article describes founder Helen Van Buren (Miss V.B.’s) vision for Kiniya in 1919, and also Marilyn “Mimi” and Jack Williams’ purchase and development of Kiniya over 55 years. I loved reading Mimi Williams’ quote: Kiniya “offers old-fashioned fun within a wholesome community. Our campers learn to be self-sufficient – we’ve never heard a camper say she is bored.” This reminded me of a wonderful phone call with Kiniya Alum, Diane Cassens Cummins. A Kiniya girl from 1955-’59, Diane had the happy surprise of finding the letters she had written home to her family in their attic. Memories flooded back of those summers and her camp friends, Joan Nathan (NY), Mary Vick Jones (VT), Cricket Rogers (NY) and Faith Evans (MA). She said, “We all have such fond memories of our time together at Kiniya (we all became Kiwis) and the privilege of knowing Mimi Williams. The summer months spent with her each year as we matured were inspiring.” Diane and her old pals plan on joining Kiniya’s 100th Celebration in 2018! In my time here since 1994, I have heard memories of summers past from multiple generations. No question

. . . much has changed over the years. The pioneering of the 1920s was distinct from the work of the 1950s. Both are quite different from the 1980s and certainly of today. The programs, the people, even some of the traditions, change with each new generation. It is refreshing to know that the Kiniya spirit — one of acceptance and kindness, compassion and generosity — is strong and ever-present. Our personal experiences of camp, even decades apart, remain familiar: we wake to the sound of the golden bell, learn the important lessons of teamwork, sportsmanship and service. We perform on stage, celebrate our Kiwis, earn our awards, grow as leaders. Kiniya campers still “enjoy old fashioned fun, learn to be self-sufficient and, we’ve yet to hear a camper say she is bored.” Today’s Camp remains solidly connected to the Camp of our past. This past summer, our Female Empowerment Council Ring celebrated the women who came before us. We learned about Helen V.B. our Founder, and Mimi Williams, who spent half a century developing Kiniya. We share their legacy through Chapel Talks and Vespers, on Kiwi Day and at our Awards Ceremony. Camp’s values expand and deepen for each of us, and as we look toward our 100th summer, I have nothing but enthusiasm for the promise of a bright future for everyone in our Kiniya community! Kiniya | Character At Kiniya, time with cabin mates and team members fill our days. It is through interacting with this camp family that opportunities for character growth, as guided by our motto, present themselves. A few examples (of countless) from this summer include a camper letting the referee know that they were the last person to touch the ball before it went out of bounds as well as a camper sharing with a staff person that a friend was feeling homesick and could use some extra support. Acts of integrity and selflessness such as these best exemplify “The Other Fellow First,” and are what we honor, award and celebrate at our third Hymn Sing of the session. Each person in our summer community quickly realizes the fulfillment and joy that comes from being our best self and helping those around us.

Dudley | Character Days at Dudley begin and end with time for reflection, a Chapel Talk in the morning and a Vesper with your cabin in the evening. These times offer a chance for the boys to hear and share experiences about what it means to live our motto and understand that the world is bigger than ourselves. As much fun as we have there are also constant opportunities to learn and grow...self-care and helpfulness: making your bunk and sweeping out the cabin during inspection; teamwork and sportsmanship: supporting your teammates, trying your hardest, and being respectful of your opponents (they may be in your cabin!); working toward a long-term goal: regularly heading to Swim Point point with a buddy to work on passing your swim test; serving your community: stopping in to the Main Office to see if there’s any service you can do to keep camp looking beautiful. And all of that’s before lunch!

We embrace a community with a culture of inclusion, acceptance and fun. We celebrate the unique gifts among campers, leaders, alumni and greater community in which we live.

Kiniya | Community Amidst the 99 new girls who experienced camp for the first time this summer, Kiniya saw over 10 friendly visiting alumni faces who came to spend their vacation time helping out at camp. #21877 Sophie Delfeus and #20297 Chloe Potash both also served as inspiring alumni chapel speakers. Staff and leaders lead by example as they play and integrate inclusion training pre-season while making cameos in many Wednesday and Saturday night shows.

Dudley | Community 217 boys joined the Camp Dudley community for the first time this summer. At the heart of that experience, and, really, for everyone at Camp each summer, is living in a tight-knit community for 3 Â˝ or 8 weeks. That means learning not only to think about your needs, but the needs of those around you. In our 132nd season, over 900 campers through staff called the Dudley campus home at some point during their summer. On top of that, alumni such as #18754 Connor Smith, #19377 Wilson Powell, #11187 Nick Chinlund, #12664 Ted Smith, joined to support our programming at important points throughout the summer. LEADERSHIP

We value the development of leadership skills in our campers and staff, inspiring them to take an active interest in the development and needs of those in our community, while sharing a passion for learning and teaching.

Kiniya | Leadership Each off-season we focus on improving our leadership curriculum to prepare our young leaders for the future, setting department and division heads up for success so as to ultimately provide the best support to our campers. This summer leadership teams experienced the new module system that provides written tools from training to use during the summer. Each year they will get a little more, and at the end of their tenure theyâ€™ll walk away with a portfolio detailing their progression in leadership at Camp. Our off-campus leadership opportunities continue to thrive. We were pleased to have 17 young women participate in NOLS this summer, with 18 others on campus who had previously participated in the NOLS program through Camp. We continue to focus on giving feedback to all campers, leaders and staff in our community as they prepare to be leaders back home.

Dudley | Leadership Ultimately, the best leaders are those who put their charges ahead of themselves. That is what each leader at every level of camp does each summer...Cabin Leaders always prioritizing their campersâ€™ experience above their own, Division Heads supporting the work of their Leaders by giving them the tools they need to be successful, Program Staff sharing their years of experience to help Leaders, ALs, and JLs be better coaches, trip leaders, and mentors. The Leadership Development program at Dudley and Kiniya is a multi-year process of experiential learning. The lessons we teach are immediately reinforced by the experience of actually leading campers and working with your peers to create amazing summers for the campers. For those that participate in leadership at Dudley and Kiniya it continues to be true that the experience resonates for the rest of their lives.

We value the environmental, financial, human, physical and spiritual resources we have inherited. We strive to foster a strong sense of accountability for those resources in the present, and a passion to sustain them for the future so that we may leave each other, our Camps, and our world better than we found them.

Kiniya | Stewardship Staff, leaders and campers celebrated the last summer in Kiniyaâ€™s dining hall before its demolition and upcoming rebuild for summer 2017. The space was a tight squeeze for every event, proving we really are ready for an expansion! Properties owned by the Williams were re-united through purchase at the start of the summer, bringing Kiniya back to its historic footprint. This brought space for a track and sand-pit on the upper fields, and use of the house space for arts majors, including Musical theatre. Leaders celebrated Campâ€™s history and female empowerment with Helen Van Buren (leader #21029 Grace Hagerty ) leading an evening of games and storytelling focused on admirable female role models.

Dudley | Stewardship This summer Stewardship took on many forms at Camp Dudley. In particular, our service program proved to be a highlight for the boys. Led by #18912 Will Dobbs Allsop and #17639 Eric Schildge, we continued to find ways to help the boys understand what it means to take care of our environment, both natural and built. The service program this summer featured our first-ever Cubbie Day of Service as well as frequent trips to the new compost facility to help turn the compost and understand its purpose. In addition, our outdoor programming team continued to teach Leave No Trace principals as part of the trip briefings, which is an increasingly important topic as the Adirondacks continue to grow as a top tier attraction for outdoor enthusiasts. Playing Fields Restored at Kiniya! Prior to Campâ€™s opening we installed a professional grade softball field as part of our field revitalization plan. Very shortly after Camp was over, the lacrosse field and soccer pitch on the upper campus were totally overhauled and leveled. These fields have been reseeded as well. The new playing fields greened up nicely before the frost arrived and will be in great shape when everyone arrives in 2017. Fall 2016

he year was 1919. Camp Dudley was celebrating its 35th consecutive summer in operation. Chief Beckman was at the helm for his 11th summer as Dudley’s Director and Helen Van Buren – a tenacious and independent woman fondly known as Miss V.B. – had a vision for a Girls Camp in Colchester. Helen would regularly canoe past the Clay Point property and finally was able to purchase the land, formerly owned by Mark Moody. She opened the girls’ summer camp with an emphasis on music and outdoor life; it remained in her hands for 26 years. Harry and Marjorie Brown, who also owned Brown Ledge Camp, owned it for the next six years until Marilyn “Mimi” and Jack Williams bought it in 1951. The Camp property remained in its

original configuration until Jack and Mimi Williams eventually subdivided a portion of the property for their own use when Dudley acquired Kiniya in 2006 – 11 summers ago. It had been our dream that the subdivided property eventually be reunited with Camp. The opportunity to fulfill this dream occurred just days before we opened the gates this summer. In an effort to take advantage of this timely opportunity, Camp arranged mortgage financing, reconnecting Kiniya to its original 147-acre footprint as it was always meant to be. Within 24 hours of the closing, the 1241 Camp Kiniya Road property was thoroughly cleaned and fully furnished. Locks were changed, utilities turned

back on and the property was transformed to house several educators on staff. It became a beloved home and gathering space for the summer of 2016. Throughout the summer, service projects were plentiful as we worked to restore the gardens and commenced the rejuvenation of the 1281 Camp Kiniya Road Property (the former home of Miss V.B. and Mimi and Jack Williams). We enjoyed an expanded Athletics Program on the enlarged upper fields and transformed one of the large outdoor sheds to house our Woodworking Major. The basement of the 1281

property was cleaned, decorated, and set up to house our Musical Voice Major each day. The magnificent gardens of the 1281 property quickly became known among our campers as “The Secret Garden” which provided the opportunity for outdoor yoga and meditation space as well as an excellent location for staff meetings and one-on-ones. We look forward to further fulfilling our vision of creating an Alumni and Leadership Center with additional renovations of this property.

New Community Partners at Kiniya: The Women of UVM! May 17th, 2016 was a beautiful sunny late spring day at Kiniya. It was made more so by the presence of over 20 volunteer friends from The Women of the University of Vermont (UVM). Originally begun as an organization to offer social support to wives and members of UVM faculty and staff, the organization, over the years, has reached out to the community at large. Membership now numbers more than 120 women. This wonderful group stumbled upon #20298 Mike Dâ€™Amico and #20613 Angie Hill out at the Moscow property near Stowe on a snowshoe outing. They helped haul old corrugated metal from the old shack out of the woods on the Catamount Trail. Their interest in camp led to the offer of further service, and thus this work day was conceived. The project set before them was improving the Kiniya Garden. This included cultivating the

ground, mulching paths (including operating an industrial chipper that ate away at a huge pile of winter tree fall), and laying stone at the entrance. The group was not only a powerhouse of workers but full of women with incredible professional and life experience. Amongst them were lawmakers, doctors, mothers and grandmothers, stone-layers, master gardeners, healthcare advocates, teachers and athletes. They exemplified the Camp Motto and were an inspiration to work alongside. Not to mention having the work ethic of an army of ants! Gail served a spectacular lunch in the dining hall. There was a feeling of mutual gratitude and dedication to service and nurturing the lives of women and girls. We hope to continue to partner with them in service for years to come!

eorge C. Peck, camper #1, sketched a reverent and informative picture of his friend, Sumner Francis Dudley; a young man of “most pleasing personality,” possessed of enthusiasm and a “willingness and desire to help any who needed council or advice.” It was Dudley himself who saw the need for continuous improvement and expansion of program. In the 1880s, program consisted of much boating and swimming, stories and song around the campfire in the evening and Bible study each morning. We know that the number of participants included 83 boys by 1891 when Dudley moved his operation to the Town of Westport in order to further grow program to include hiking, a playing field and purchases of boats and tents to enhance the experience. 1904 saw then Director Raymond Kaighn install the division of a Camp Dudley day into periods with more intention and attention to an educational approach for organized camping. While the cadence of the days at Camp may have evolved, the desire to improve has always been at the heart of this change.

Nothing beats a committed mentor in any program area nor can we understate the importance of a great idea. The summer of 2001 saw an innovation in Camp’s daily schedule that remains the over-arching template for our weeks of program each summer. It was during this season when the term Arts Majors or AMs was officially adopted and given a specified time as a morning activity. Before that summer, Arts Majors were lumped in with Individual Majors (sports) thus forcing a camper to choose between working with clay or working on his back swing. The success of this decision was immediately evident and greeted with tremendous appreciation by boy and staff alike. It was this design that also led to the concept of Program Pillars - those very pieces of program that are essential to Dudley. With benchmark improvements on both sides of the lake, The Arts Program at Dudley and Kiniya is that very pillar of program that has allowed girls and boys an avenue to success that they either sorely need or

may not have ever considered before. I’d like to think that Sumner Francis Dudley had, at the very least, a love of song and storytelling. I’m sure that The Colonel’s voice was often raised in song with her girls who, to this day, make mealtime performance time. Our early directors may be a bit startled by the passing drone getting an aerial shot for the Wednesday Night Slide Show or amazed at the professionalism of our year-end publications, but they would undoubtedly see the fashion in which The Arts have enhanced program and thus the overall experience.

ll of our current Arts Program areas have a rich history of origin and pedigree that have brought them to their present day incarnations. Early on in the life cycle of Camp Dudley, The Woodcraft Department was under the auspices of the Hike Hut. The first of the organizations to hybrid the term craft, it is described as a Club whose members had to have certain skills in woodcraft in order to be allowed to go on hikes outside of Camp’s property. The term “camp craft” was used at Dudley in the early years to refer to those activities that one associates with a typical camping experience. They included carpentry, basketry, leathercraft, model airplane building and metal work. While the raw materials have changed over the years, the enthusiasm and popularity of Arts and Crafts has remained high. Brodie is named for #4661 H.J. Steven Brodie who ran the program for 25 years. Dedicated to his memory in 1980, the building is a hub of self expression and intellectual stimulation. Some incredible educators have spent their time giving to the boys who call Brodie there favorite place on campus. With the implementation of Arts Majors, Arts and Crafts seeks to involve as many campers as possible in activity aimed at exposing boys to artistic thought. The teachers and professionals who make Brodie their primary home for the summer months are still some of the finest educators we engage each summer. No boy who enters the building leaves without a new appreciation for the peace one finds while engaged in self-expression. And no Camp Dudley Leader would deny the power of that building to help focus a homesick camper on the joys of camping.

ain or shine, Treiber Art Center at Camp Kiniya is open for girls to explore the visual arts. Whether you are looking for friendship bracelet string or you need a place to draw and paint with friends, Treiber is the environment you will want to spend time in. The talented staff at Treiber provides a wide variety of hands-on experiences. Campers can learn jewelry making, ceramic arts, mask making, and studio arts both as part of an arts major and during choice time. There is even a woodworking major for senior campers in which girls can develop woodworking skills making things like bird houses or a wooden puzzle with camper numbers cut into them. There are plenty of opportunities to be creative in Treiber. During team activity this year, campers made masks, did letter writing and an art installation about their favorite memories of the dining hall. Treiber is also a favorite place to do service. Campers love making props for theater productions or mosaic tiles for the garden, but they also help with mopping the floors, washing brushes or wiping down the tables. Campers’ willingness to be part of the maintenance of the Treiber learning environment is an example of girls really living “The Other Fellow First” motto. This year campers even went a step further with their service by donating their artwork to Camp’s fundraising auction. It is this generosity of spirit and the art that flows from it that makes Treiber a truly happy place.

INSIDE LOOK: A Camp Production Every weekend the Dudley/Kiniya community gathers in the evening to watch the highly-anticipated Saturday Night Show. Our plays, comedies, and musicals have included beloved titles like Matilda, Shrek, Annie, The Tempest, and The Princess Bride -- always with a special Dudley/ Kiniya twist to make it a night to remember! Each cast is composed of talented campers (with the occasional guest appearance from beloved leaders or staff members). Auditions are held one week before each play, and then the hustle begins!

It takes a dedicated and passionate camper to land a lead role. It is all hands on deck as the cast and crew members dive into all aspects of the theater.

Dear Friends, Of all the blessings Camp has brought me through the years, the greatest has been the gift of friendship. To this day I hold those I have met, worked alongside, learned from, and loved close to my heart. These connections run deep. Friendships are made across all ages, and interactions of acceptance and encouragement are modeled every day. Camp’s formative experiences quite often shape the adults that we become. They sustain us through times of celebration and times of challenge. Camp is a second home to many generations; current mothers and fathers of future Dudley and Kiniya campers are friends from my earlier Kiniya years. Today my Camp friends are both decades older and decades younger than I am. Age is replaced by a deep appreciation and respect for “the person you truly are.”

Practicing gratitude had me focusing on the positive. What a great feeling. Existing in today’s world can be a challenge. I’ve endured my fair share of heartaches, of loss, of days where I am so angry that nothing has gone right. I had to think long and hard about what I was really truly grateful for that day. Something always came to mind and it always will. On the other hand, I have had days of pure joy and downright spasms of excitement, where my one-liners turned into a sentence or paragraph of gratefulness. Just as in life, there is a contrast and through your individual journeys you will experience it all. What I encourage you to do is look in with patience and openness to find and share the good. Copeland, one of the special beings Jenn is grateful for. Practicing gratitude is simple and free. Even though I’ve always considered myself to be a thankful and a grateful individual, I wasn’t actively sharing or thinking it. Keeping this journal has had a profound influence on my life, my mindset and my attitude. I look forward to the end of my day when I can reflect and carefully choose what I’d like to share with the blank page and a welcomed smile that crosses my face.

I am not just grateful to be part of the Camp Kiniya community for a second year. What I am truly grateful for are the memories that we will create, the new friendships we will foster and the growth I will watch come over each and every one of you over the course of this summer. Camp is the ultimate outlet for you to unleash your inner curiosity, ask a million questions, be scared, be pushed and be humbled.

If we all shared what we were grateful for on a daily basis we would be operating in an even more positive environment. We have to start by looking inward so we have the confidence to contribute and build each other up. Let’s change our lenses and show the world, our communities, and our friends how grateful we are. Jenn spent her first summer at Camp Kiniya in 2015 directing the trekking program. She realized how special the community is and was hooked, returning for the 2016 season. In the fall of 2016, Jenn was hired as manager of the product operations team at Vermont Bike Tours and Country Walkers, in Williston, VT. Her husband, #24014 Tom, works at Kiniya as the Director of Operations and Sustainability. They live at camp and Jenn is planning on being involved at Kiniya as much as possible this coming summer.

At its core, The Leadership Development Program at Dudley and Kiniya is an experiential process that helps young people answer the questions: what does being “a Leader” mean? What does it mean to you? What does it mean at Camp?

he Leadership Development Program begins the moment campers step on campus for the first time and continues each summer no matter rank and title. Camp’s approach to leadership is deeply informed by our motto, “The Other Fellow First.” While being a leader is about organizing, managing and attending to the needs of all in your charge it is just as equally about the example you set and how you conduct yourself personally. Leadership is essentially being in service to others. From the earliest days of leadership development at our Camps, our approach to teaching leadership is experiential. There is no substitute for actual hands-on experience. That is why our Aides (the first years in our Leadership Development Program) are in cabins as part of a leadership team working with campers and learning directly from the Cabin Leader. Inherent in this experiential approach is building a safe place for failure, which can be the most powerful experience in our program. We try to foster an environment where you can experiment with different styles, push outside of your comfort zone, and ultimately discover your strengths and weaknesses as a leader. It has been said that camp is a good place to make a mistake, to fail. Leaders in the Dudley & Kiniya tradition can see it is this powerful mix of experiential training, dedication to personal growth, building quality relationships, and the willingness to make decisions with the broader community in mind that creates a good Leader: may we know them, be them, and raise them!

How did your camper experience shape your early ideas about leadership?

How has the leadership youâ€™ve developed while at Camp influenced your life today?

Before I started going to Camp, I looked up to the leaders in my life at home, but never felt I had the potential or drive to be considered one myself. I admired my parents, friends, and teachers for their confidence, kindness, and ability to connect with others on a deeper level, and yet I always told myself that I was too shy and afraid to develop those skills. It was more comfortable to remain silent and never take any chances.

Iâ€™ve found the leadership skills I have developed at Camp have allowed me to become more outgoing, more confident in my abilities and my decisions, and overall, a better student, friend, sister, and daughter. As a leader, it is essential that you be welcoming, attentive, kind, and understanding, and these values have improved my relationships throughout the year, especially within the classroom. While studying can very easily become the passive act of listening to a professor and taking notes, my background in leadership has pushed me to ask questions, lead class discussions, and most importantly, know when to ask for help. My experiences as a leader have helped me to improve myself and reach my own potential, and it has given me the tools to become the same kind of role model I looked up to as a kid!

Throughout my years as a camper at Kiniya, however, I gradually began to realize that anyone could become a leader in his or her own community. Leadership is so flawlessly intertwined into the spirit of the Camp community that I soon found myself with the confidence and courage to reach out to the girls around me and provide the support they needed to accomplish their own goals. Leadership is inherently an act of giving to others, and I soon found that the only thing better than gaining confidence in yourself is being able to instill that strength and confidence in others.

Emma is currently a sophomore at Skidmore College and will be returning as a Leader in 2017. Spring 2017

Ellie returns for her second summer as DHead of the Seniors and is joined by fellow Westport Eagle, Megan ‘Spudsy’ Sudduth. Spuds is entering her 4th summer as a leader and will bring fantastic enthusiasm and passion for all things Camp!

Camp Packing Lists over the years . . . Today we are lucky to have the options of the best outdoor gear, the coolest crazy creek, and the latest pair of athletic socks. When you think about all of the things needed to pack before leaving for camp, it can become overwhelming! Over the last several years, Dudley and Kiniya have developed systems to provide campers with these items should they forget or come without. Affectionately called the “Share Shack” at Kiniya, campers can ask their Leader to accompany them to the Share Shack to check for something they need. At Dudley, boys can ask to be a part of the Blazer Swap as they grow out of old sizes and into new. How can I help? Has your son or daughter outgrown any of the following? entral to creating the sense of community at Kiniya is the Dining Hall, where our entire community is called to gather three times a day all summer long. The Dining Hall is the most-used facility on campus, the backdrop for precious memories, and it is the Heart of the Camp. Our 2016 campers said goodbye to the old Kiniya Dining Hall in a very special way. Each camper shared her reflection of what the Dining Hall meant to her on a note card. By the end of the season, more than 450 cards lined the walls of our beloved space. This collection of poems and pictures and quotes and thoughts were compiled and will be safely stored in our archives for generations to come. As background, the vision for this new space began in 2011, when we invited Breadloaf Architects of Middlebury, VT, to partner with us in the creation of our Master Site Plan. During this process it became appar-

ent that the former dining hall was not sufficient to serve our future needs and a recommendation to expand its footprint was made. The landslides and shoreline erosion of 2012 heightened our need to revisit this recommendation and to engage engineers about the positioning of the future Dining Hall. Based on the condition of the old facility and the proximity to the shoreline, these studies ultimately resulted in the recommendation to demolish and rebuild the facility at least 50 feet from its location, as opposed to renovating the structure to support future growth. These recommendations sent our Dining Hall project to the top of our priority list! We contracted with Breadloaf, a design-through-construction company, and our work began. The design and permitting phase took an entire two years to complete and we were delighted to receive permits in hand to begin construction in the fall of 2016.

Though we will miss the history and tradition of the old dining hall, we all know how crowded and hot it had become. We also know that every day (without fail) mealtime ends with â€œspontaneousâ€? song and dance. Rather than limit our fun, we want to ensure the floors can safely support our community cheering and jumping up and down with raucous enthusiasm. As we near completion of our new spectacular building, I can report with full confidence that this facility is all that we hoped it would be! It is truly spectacular and will serve all of our future needs. I know our

campers will enjoy more elbow room at the table and a spacious feel with better air circulation. I also like to think that Helen V.B and Mimi and Jack Williams would be in awe of this beautiful new space. It has retained the spectacular views of Lake Champlain, incorporated repurposed beams from the old dining hall into stunning new tables and benches, and will be the future home of our beloved old camp bell that has called generations of girls to meals throughout the years!

Kiniya's 100th! The Countdown Begins...

here is great excitement in the air as we look ahead to 2018, Kiniyaâ€™s 100th summer of operation!

Planning and preparations are underway for a plethora of Centennial activities to commemorate this important time in our history. Marnie is forming a Centennial Planning Committee, inviting Kiniya Alumnae representatives from each former decade to join her in the exciting planning of this celebration, and encourages anyone interested in getting involved to reach out to her at Marnie@campdudley.org. Our vision for the Centennial Celebration includes two separate events. The first will be an in-season celebration with the campers of summer 2018 and the second will be at the conclusion of the camp season. The in-season celebration will be a oneday event creating an opportunity for campers and alumnae guests to come together and share their camp experiences and memories. Alumnae will arrive in the

morning (after inspection!) and participate alongside campers in some morning activities. Alumnae and campers will come together for a buffet lunch â€˜neath the pines followed by an afternoon filled with opportunities to walk the grounds, share memories, and participate in structured programs with our campers. The second celebration will be in the form of a Kiniya Alumnae Reunion Weekend! Arriving on Friday afternoon and departing on Sunday morning, alumnae will have the opportunity to walk their footsteps from years past, enjoy instructor-led activities including paddling, sailing, tennis, archery, and ceramics, to name a few. Camp tours will be incorporated into the schedule as well as an optional hike to our Mansfield Property. The highlight of the weekend will be the Centennial Sit-down Dinner with live musical performances on Saturday evening.

Dates will be set in the coming months and announced in the fall edition of the CD News. Additional celebration ideas include: continuing to update the online archives specific to Kiniya and displaying more historic visuals in Kiniya’s community buildings (including the new Dining Hall, the future Lodge & future Leadership & 2 Alumni Center). In addition, we will incorporate a special way to honor our founder, Helen Van Buren, and Kiniya’s former Owners & Directors of 51 years, Jack and Mimi Williams. Lastly, the 2018 CDA Reunion at Dudley will include an opportunity to come and visit Kiniya for a celebratory 100th anniversary luncheon! 100 years of operation is a remarkable achievement, and we have much to celebrate! I invite you all to join us in commemorating this special anniversary in 2018!

ith the help of Marnie, Kat, Mollie, Paul, and Tom (and his dog Mango) our 6th JL Leadership Weekend was a success! We focused on different leadership styles and the various responsibilities that we will acquire as Junior Leaders this coming summer. When we weren’t in sessions, we survived a frigid walk up to the new leadership barn, practiced our outdoor cooking skills with Mollie and Paul, and continuously tended to a toasty fire in MacLean. Three of the many highlights of the weekend included Gail’s delicious cooking, reconnecting with our Kiniya sisters, and the construction of a Lego zoo. We also enjoyed leading some of the staples of the The 2017 Kiniya JL Leadership weekend attendees summer experience including vespers, chapel talks, and a council ring! This weekend gave us a sneak peek of summer 2017 and we can’t wait for all of the memories that we will make together with our campers. Twenty-four of those who will be 2017 Dudley Junior Leaders (a new record!) gathered in Westport March 17-19 for the annual Leadership Weekend. The weekend was supported by Evan, Tom, Matt, Jake Rutter, Dave Nelson, George Wells, Tom Dils, Owen Marsh, and Davo. Of course, one of the highlights were meal times when Josh served up some classic JL Weekend fare. The weekend serves as an introduction to both taking on the challenge of being a Dudley Leader and becoming an employee for the first time. Discussion and training centered around the Motto, Mission, and Core Values, giving and receiving feedback, and our roles as mentors to campers. Highlights included a hike to a very snowy Stacy Brook Site 1, an outdoor cooking class, and a showing of the documentary, “The Mask You Live In,” which explores the definitions of masculinity in America. However, the most important aspect of the weekend is that the participants make it all happen by leading vespers, running a chapel service, putting together an extravaganza, and organizing a hike. Judging from this group the future of Dudley leadership is very bright!

Dudley Gap Experience How Do We Fill 100 Days? Enthusiasm for our Gap Experience is growing and we wanted to share what is in store for future groups of young men and women. Our program is designed to progress throughout 100 days, expanding on what we learn and preparing for our journeys ahead. Continuing on themes from our summer experiences, Dudley & Kiniya traditions will be staples throughout the experience. The following will be a part of our everyday experience during the 100 days: • Community building with local farms, families, and schools • Visits from alums who are excited to share their own leadership paths and careers • Leadership and character development • Spirituality through Vespers and Chapel Talks • Family style meals

What are you most excited about?

The Dudley Gap Experience is bringing together two of my most cherished life experiences, boarding school and Camp. My time as a high school boarding student taught me the importance and benefit of living together with peers and teachers as one family. At Camp, I have built on this same model engaging in new experiences that challenge me to expand my comfort zone. I am incredibly excited to have a new Gap family and to grow along side these young men and women in a similar fashion. I can’t wait to begin this adventure and see what all future Gap-ers have to contribute to Camp, the Adirondacks, and my own continued development!

I’m looking forward to creating that Dudley & Kiniya cabin-feel with our group, working together as a team, and helping each other grow in the process. I know the expeditions will be incredible, and yet I’m even more excited to see these men and women discover the Adirondacks in a new way. There is so much to do up here, it’s hard to put into words. Living up here has opened my eyes to how incredible life in the northcountry can be, and I’m looking forward to sharing that experience with others.

Where Will We Live? We are lucky to have the Leadership Barn as a homebase for our program. The Barn is coming along beautifully, with plenty of bunk space, a gorgeous view of the Green Mountains, a dedicated kitchen space for cooking all of our meals, a full solar panel array, radiant heating, and a downstairs apartment for our alumni mentors.

#20030 Nicola (Fitzgerald) Gaddum and #20544 Oliver Gaddum, Taupo, New Zealand, celebrated the first birthday of their beautiful daughter, on February 28th, 2017. Having spent Happy first birthday Paige! summers at Kiniya together, Nic and Olly are hopeful for Paige to experience Kiniya for herself one day! #20163 Lucia Knell, New York, NY, choreographed a dance show called “The Hearth presents: For Annie” in December and January. Lucia said, “Women supporting women is important to me. Giving women a platform for making really good decisions is important to me. So I couldn’t be happier Lucia Knell to be a part of this project and The Hearth in general.” Lucia Knell is dancer and choreographer based in New York, having studied under the direction of Balinda Craig-Quijada at Kenyon College in Gambier, OH. Her work at Kenyon was selected to premiere at the American College Dance Festival in the Spring of 2013 and garnered her receipt of the Thomas Turgeon Memorial Award for Best Choreography in 2013. Since moving to New York, Lucia has trained at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theater, co-teaches a Beyoncé-inspired dance class at Broadway Bodies in Chelsea and performs with the Brooklyn-based dance companies, Liz Charky + Co. and Roxy Company. She’s had the chance to perform at fun places all over New York like Triskelion Arts, Chez Bushwick, Dixon Place, and Judson Memorial Church.

Kiniya Alum, Erin Galey resides in Portland, OR. Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, Erin studied Directing at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Director and Cinematographer, Erin’s music video, “If I Had A Balloon” by Joshua Panda, won Best Music Video at Fusion Film Festival, La Femme Film Heather and Cooper Thaisz Festival, and SoCal Film Market. BRAVE GIRL is her NYU Tisch Asia Master’s thesis film. Erin’s Sister and Kiniya alum, Heather (Galey) Thaisz, and husband Gabe welcomed their 3rd baby boy, Cooper Kent Thaisz, on October 25th, 2016. The sisters enjoyed time together in PA over the holidays. #21010 Erica Lash graduates from the School of Medicine at University of Rochester later this spring and will begin her new chapter in residency as Doctor Lash! She wrote: “I truly feel that my Kiniya experiences have shaped me and provided me with a strong foundation, allowing me to be successful today. Kiniya is such a wonderful place and I’m so happy it continues to grow and flourish!” #21096 Bethany Silva, Philadelphia, PA, defends her doctoral dissertation in April 2017, graduating in May from the U. Penn Graduate School of Education’s Reading/Writing/Literacy program. Says Bethany, “My dissertation looked at how teens engaged in critical literacy and digital writing at a summer camp at Independence National Historical Park.” Bethany will be joining the faculty of the University of New Hampshire’s Education Department as a Research Assistant Professor and Founding Director of the Community Literacy Center. News and Notes #21518 Nick Ansell and #20357 Claudia Plaza Barnils of Barcelona, Spain enjoyed a miniKiniya reunion in Nick’s Hometown of Cape Town, South Africa last Nick and Claudia comparing Kiwi Discs. summer. Nick stated, “Claudia came all the way from Spain to South Africa to ensure I was wearing my Kiwi Disc!” Fortunately, they both were!! #21532 Pete Nash celebrated 60 years of friendship with his Kiniya Pal Bill Willey with a trip to Vegas in February, 2017. Pete and Bill spent their first summer at Kiniya together in 1957 and have been loyal friends and supporters of Carley Willey and Marnie Kiniya ever since! Pete and Bill were joined by Bill’s son, Burt Willey, who celebrated his wedding to wife Marilee at Kiniya in the 1990s! Bill is is thrilled to have granddaughter, Carley Willey, joining us on staff in summer 2017! In the small world department, Carley became friends with and heard more about Kiniya from #21049 Eva Wertimer and #21062 Zaidee Laughlin at Scripps College where all three are enjoying freshmen year together! #21884 Laura Benson moved from Sydney, Australia to London, England three years ago and continues to be in close contact with her UK Kiniya Pals, #21888 Caitlyn Forsyth, #21885 Natalie Branston, #21882 Flo Bailey, and #21903 Ellen Scales.

#22082 Chris Henderson, Sunrise, FL, wrote to Matt “I wanted to give you an update. This weekend I competed at the Florida DECA Career Development Conference that we spoke of at the reunion. My particular event was Financial Consulting and after a weekend of presentations and tests, I took first place overall in the state of Florida. Now I will go on to compete at the International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Anaheim, CA, from April 25th to April 30th. It was great seeing you a few weeks ago. Hope all is well at Camp. All the best, Christopher” #22473 Ian Emery, Dedham, MA, recently was awarded the Alex Cohn Grant through the Beaver Country Day School in Newton, MA. The award committee said, “Our second recipient is a burgeoning woodworker and crewman. Ian Emery is a 10th grader Ian Emery who has a deep passion for building things with his hands. His grandfather and uncle are experienced boat builders and have taught him, over the years, some of the basics of craftsmanship. Ian applied for funds to build a professional-grade rowing vessel with his bare hands – a boat akin to the types you would see in competitions called Oxford Shells. His boat will span 20 ½ feet in length, and he hopes to launch it in the Charles River when he’s done. Ian used these words to describe his vision of building this boat: ‘I believe that building something is about making elegant and functional pieces of art.’” Ian was at Dudley in 2012 as a Cub through 2015 as a Senior. Congratulations Ian! #22406 Mollie Farnham-Stratton, Colchester, VT. Mollie has been published!! Her work is included in the article, “Mindfulness-Based Practice in OBH” (outdoor behavioral healthcare providers) published in the newest edition of the Journal of Therapeutic Schools and Programs. #23654 Emily Cutting, Port Henry, NY, announced that Miss Iris Ruth Ida was born on Friday January 13th at Iris Ruth Ida 8:38 pm. She weighed in at 6 lbs. 11 oz. and was 20 ½ inches long. She was a week late but worth the wait! Emily was an RN at the Infirmary for the past two years and spent two years on the K-Crew prior to that. Emily, Iris Ruth and proud father Thomas David Ida, III, live in Mineville, NY. #21818 Patrice Stevenson welcomed a beautiful baby boy, Liam Stevenson, on October 16, 2016. Liam weighed in at a healthy 9 lbs. 4 oz.

Albany or Burlington, you all have your landmarks as you wind your way back home. Coming home is a thrill. Last night, entering the dining room was like coming home to my family as I looked around and knew every face in the room. At our Dudley family reunions, we do not shake hands — rather, we hug.

Dudley will be here forever, and I am proud as a Trustee that we are part of caring for this particular era of Dudley’s history. As with every meeting, we have important work to do today. We can only face these challenges together, as a family.

Back to my linguistic roots with something our Commencement speaker at Berwick taught me last June: the root of the word decency is decere, which in Latin, has ties to the word “obligation.” Imagine the place our world would be if every language shared that credo: Decency is an obligation, in everything that we do, every decision that we make.

Today and this weekend, our Dudley family reunites from all corners of this country. People have traveled many miles to get here, to the place many of us call home. Let us welcome our brothers and sisters with hugs rather than handshakes. In every discussion we have today, let us bear in mind the best interest of our family members as we work to nurture our Camps for the future. Let us do the work we have been entrusted to do by our family members, and do our work with thought and love and care, and decency.

Dudley is our home, we are a family, and we are the Trustees of this home. We are Trustees, and inherent in that word is the fact that Dudleyites have entrusted us to take care of our Camps, our home. As Trustees, we are in a position to make an indelible stamp on an eternal place:

Our two major capital projects this year — Dudley’s new Leadership Barn (featured with our staff on the cover) and Kiniya’s Dining Hall (see article, pages 20-21) — are each unique while incorporating some shared design elements. Douglas Fir beams, pine interior siding, black hardware, steel brackets, and concrete floors are common features that unite our buildings. We can’t wait for you to see them!
