An Experience for More Than Just the Campers Camp is for campers, right? While that’s certainly true, it’s also great for parents and caregivers! Just ask Amanda Manuel, whose daughter Doree attended our Ohio session. “Camp Blue Skies was a special blessing to us this year,” she shared. After a house fire in April, they were “all tired and weary. Doree was especially anxious and depressed from all the change, and she hadn’t really smiled in a while.” One important aspect was feeling confident in the Camp Blue Skies experience. “Because of my many conversations with
the camp staff, I was able to drop Doree off and know she was safe and would be in good, caring hands.” Affordability was another key factor. “It really helped that so many people had put so much time into fundraising so it was affordable. We chose a payment plan and said let’s go for it!” Through daily photos, they could see that Doree was enjoying herself and that she was “smiling and having fun again.” Reassured, she says they were able to have some much-needed rest and have some fun on their own. She adds, “I am such a fan of Camp Blue Skies now.” So every time you see the smiling face of a camper, remember that those who love and care for them daily are enjoying their time as well, free from their typical routine for a few days. Everyone’s a winner with Camp Blue Skies!
Camp Blue Skies Celebrates Five Years of Service! Camp Blue Skies - Ohio was a homecoming for me, as I was born, raised and went to college in Columbus. Each trip I made to recruit campers and volunteers brought back fond memories, and so many of my old friends have stepped up to become generous donors and volunteers. My fraternity brother Jon Holcomb and his wife Brenda, classmates of mine at Ohio Wesleyan University, worked tirelessly to head up the camp and make it a success. What a thrill to spend time with them throughout the year and be there to see the results!
been easy, but we’ve come farther than I ever dreamed. And none of this would have been possible without the work of our core team members - Rebecca, Liz, Kit, Amy, Alison and Crystal. I can’t thank them enough for their dedication, expertise, and their passion for the campers, volunteers, nurses, and caregivers. They are simply the best!
Dick Sesler, Camp Blue Skies Founder
It’s hard to believe that Camp Blue Skies is celebrating its fifth year. The road hasn’t
Welcome to the Team! As Camp Blue Skies continues to grow, so does the team that makes our camps possible. Please welcome: Debra Lowery of New Albany, Ohio, has been named Director of Camp Blue Skies-Ohio. Debra will be the local face of CBS and will oversee recruitment of campers and volunteers, support fundraising efforts, and work with the Foundation office to coordinate the logistics of the Ohio session. Leighann Swanson, an independent fundraising consultant, is working with Camp Blue Skies Foundation as Development Director for NC Camps. Her role includes orchestrating the spring NCAA Hoops for Camp Bracket Challenge, the fall Hooked on Camp Fishing Derby, and managing donor relations to benefit NC Camps.
HOOPS FOR CAMP RETURNS MARCH 15! Whether you’re a college basketball fan or not, you likely fill out a bracket during the NCAA tourney just for the heck of it or to participate in a pool. Hoops For Camp, our annual online fundraiser, gives those picks a chance to do some good and change lives. You donate $10 to play and all of the money goes to Camp Blue Skies. Plus, the winner gets a sweet prize! Watch your email and our social media channels for the skinny on how to sign up to be a team captain and how to make your picks!
a special thank you... Huge shout out to volunteer, Michael Coulter, for attending five consecutive Camp Blue Skies sessions! Having learned about camp through a close friend and CBS volunteer, Mike first joined us in 2013 for one of our North Carolina sessions…got “hooked” as the saying goes…and attended all 2014 sessions in GA, OH and NC! He assists in everything from camp set-up to fishing assistant to cabin counselor. Thank you for your dedication and being a part of our Camp Blue Skies family!
WHO KNEW EXERCISE COULD BE SUCH A BALL! Campers and volunteers put some bounce into their workout in a safe and fun way! We are so thankful to Jim Guimond for developing an innovative, fun and approachable exercise program for our campers this fall. "Balance Your Body" teaches our campers and volunteers how to get a great workout using stability balls. Campers bounce, balance, throw and giggle their way through an exercise program.
We are thrilled to announce that Jim will also be joining us in March at Camp Blue Skies - Georgia! Jim is a Life Coach, Fitness Technology Consultant, Personal Trainer, Triathlete, CBS volunteer and one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.
