Belk honors Dick Sesler as Project Hometown Hero Belk selected Camp Blue Skies founder Dick Sesler as a Project Hometown Hero for creating camps for adults with developmental disabilities.
donation. Camper Cat Spantgos accompanied Dick on the field. Belkie Bear, Belk’s beloved mascot, helped deliver one more surprise from the Charlotte-based retailer: A new electric golf cart to help transport campers at camp.
It’s the first national honor for Sesler and Camp Blue Skies, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Belk’s Project Hometown Heroes are people who are doing great work in the retailer’s 16state footprint. Belk treated Dick like a hero during the Belk Bowl on Dec. 31 at Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium. Belk representatives turned section 206 into a Camp Blue Skies “fan zone” with 35 complimentary tickets for campers, parents/caregivers, volunteers, board members and team members. 2
In the second quarter, Dick and Camp Blue Skies were featured in a 30-second commercial on ESPN. The commercial was filmed at our weekend camp Dec. 6-8 at YMCA Camp Thunderbird in Lake Wylie, SC. At the end of the third quarter, Belk officials presented Dick with a $25,000

Weekend camp full of new campers and volunteers Can you have as much fun and recreation at a 3-day camp as a 5-day session? Campers and volunteers at Camp Blue Skies Weekend, Dec. 6-8 at YMCA Camp Thunderbird in Lake Wylie, SC, answered with a resounding Yes! Priority for attending weekend camp was given to:
New campers.
Campers who were waitlisted and did not attend the most recent NC and/or GA sessions.
Campers with work or commitments preventing them from attending a 5-day session.
“We were more than pleased that of the 46 campers, 28 were first-timers,” said Dick Sesler. “That was one of our big goals. Kit Sluder did an incredible job of recruiting in the upstate of South Carolina.” Nearly half of the volunteers — 29 of 62 — also were new to Camp Blue Skies. “Alison Barry deserves major kudos for that accomplishment. It’s a tribute to her recruiting efforts and her strong relationships with our veteran volunteers,” said Dick. “We’re also grateful to Amanda Little, a Camp Blue Skies volunteer who works at the YMCA of Greater Charlotte, for leading the charge there.”
YMCA of Greater Charlotte, our weekend camp partners, assisted with recruiting and programming. Todd Tibbets, President/CEO of the Charlotte YMCA, enjoyed checking out the activities Saturday and hopes to make it to a camp in October. The 2020 weekend camp is Dec. 11-13 at YMCA Camp Thunderbird. Camper applications open in early September.

Camp Blues Skies partners with Reason To Bake on a signature cookie for 10th Anniversary celebration Camper Carolyn Sampson and her mother Elise created the Lemon Blueberry Oatmeal Camp Blue Skies Cookie and added it to their Reason To Bake Cookies line to honor our 10th anniversary celebration. Like their other delicious cookies, this one is gluten-free, non-GMO, and all-natural. A box of six cookies is $10 on ReasonToBake.com and can be shipped anywhere. A portion of the proceeds from cookie sales will benefit Camp Blue Skies Foundation. “We appreciate Elise, Carolyn, and Reason To Bake for teaming up with us in creating this great cookie and for their amazing support over the years. I can’t think of a more delicious tribute to 10 years of Camp Blue Skies,” said Dick Sesler. “This cookie is one of the ways to make camp available to more adults with developmental disabilities, provide respite
to families and caregivers, and change the lives of our volunteers,” he said. Carolyn, who has Down syndrome, began attending camp four years ago after Camp Blue Skies connected with Reason To Bake via Twitter. Elise and Carolyn immediately became ambassadors for Camp Blue Skies and often donate cookies for dessert during sessions and to serve during fundraisers. “We have seen firsthand how Camp Blue Skies can transform the lives of the campers, parents, caregivers, volunteers, and supporters,” said Elise. “It is so meaningful, knowing that each box of cookies sold will directly impact this great organization and the amazing individuals they serve.” Besides being a winning flavor combination, the lemon blueberry is a tip of the hat to Camp Blue Skies’ signature blue and yellow colors.
Improv Charlotte shows benefit Camp Blue Skies Improv Charlotte, an award-winning comedy group, donated over $2,800 after selecting Camp Blue Skies as its charity partner in July, August and September. Improv Charlotte creates inclusive, family-friendly improv that benefits nonprofits and charities. Each show at Free Range Brewing came close to or exceeded 100 people. ”We packed the space every week,” said Deanna Lee of Improv Charlotte. The foundation of improv comedy is to receive a situation or a "gift" and say "Yes, and..." to that gift, Deanna explained. “This means, whatever 6
we’re given, we accept it, we say it’s good, and we build on it,” she said. “As we shared about Camp Blue Skies with our audiences, it was beautiful to see a parallel: an organization that encourages people to accept the gifts they have been given, call them good, and build on them in a fun and unique environment. Christy Wade, a long-time volunteer and a member of Camp Blue Skies Board of Directors, is a big fan of Improv Charlotte. She put us on their radar and helped make this happen.

Attendees also learned more about the Charlotte-based nonprofit celebrating its 10th anniversary. The decorations included photos of the campers and banners created during camp. Three giving trees featured ceramic leaf ornaments created by campers that could be purchased to support programming. Annual fishing derby is a success — hook, line and sinker
Anglers, guides and volunteers spent a fun day on Lake Broyhill and raised money for Camp Blue Skies during the annual Hooked on Camp Fishing Derby Sept. 26-27. Lake Broyhill is a private lake on the grounds of YMCA Camp Harrison in Boomer, home of our North Carolina sessions. The derby raised over $20,000 to help bridge the gap between camper fees and the actual cost of camp, which keeps camper fees more affordable. Camp Blue Skies presents at Cardinal Innovations Healthcare conference
Camp Blue Skies was among the five SEED20 Alumni invited to present to the 2019 All Employee Leadership Conference for Cardinal Innovations Healthcare in Charlotte.
Cardinal selected the nonprofits based on their connection to the healthcare provider’s mission of bringing services and support to people with mental and behavioral health needs. Each of the five nonprofit participants gave their SEED20 “pitch” to the Cardinal audience of 900, who then voted for the organization they found most compelling.
