Campbell Care Gives JaRieya Confidence to Confront Bullying By the time JaRieya Watkins was in eighth grade, she’d been through more than a dozen surgeries. Born with juvenile scoliosis, as well as a hand deformity and heart and soft palate problems, she spent a lot of time with doctors, and endured the curiosity and stares – and sometimes bullying – of her classmates.

when she was nine years old. As their relationship – and trust in each other – grew, Dr. Sawyer saw what made JaRieya special: “She never let things slow her down.” Along with providing advanced treatment for her spinal deformity, he encouraged JaRieya to use what she had learned through the years to help other kids.

She came to Campbell Clinic and began seeing Jeffrey R. Sawyer, MD

He knew that in eighth grade, JaRieya had been bullied in school by a boy

who made fun of her hand. That day, she rushed home, upset and crying, though soon, she said, “I was just mad.” She began drawing, and the World Anti-Bullying Card was born. JaRieya said she realized she needed a tool to help get her message across – the card is a fill-in-the-blank way for children who are being bullied to speak up in a way that will get them the help and support they need.
