Campbell Care Gives JaRieya Confidence to Confront Bullying

By the time JaRieya Watkins was in eighth grade, she’d been through more than a dozen surgeries. Born with juvenile scoliosis, as well as a hand deformity and heart and soft palate problems, she spent a lot of time with doctors, and endured the curiosity and stares – and sometimes bullying – of her classmates.

She came to Campbell Clinic and began seeing Jeffrey R. Sawyer, MD

when she was nine years old. As their relationship – and trust in each other – grew, Dr. Sawyer saw what made JaRieya special: “She never let things slow her down.” Along with providing advanced treatment for her spinal deformity, he encouraged JaRieya to use what she had learned through the years to help other kids.

He knew that in eighth grade, JaRieya had been bullied in school by a boy

who made fun of her hand. That day, she rushed home, upset and crying, though soon, she said, “I was just mad.” She began drawing, and the World Anti-Bullying Card was born. JaRieya said she realized she needed a tool to help get her message across – the card is a fill-in-the-blank way for children who are being bullied to speak up in a way that will get them the help and support they need.

Letter From the Board Chair

Dear Friends,

Life offers us many reasons and ways to celebrate, from milestones to reunions to achievements. As interim board chairman, I get the honor of doing all three!

In December, we marked the 75th anniversary of the Campbell Clinic Foundation with a new name, new look and new tagline to reinforce our purpose: Moving Lives

In April, we convened alumni and friends for the Campbell Club 25th Triennial, celebrating generations of orthopaedic surgeons and educators and recognizing the contributions of many.

And in this issue, we honor YOU, our partners and donors, who have generously shared expertise and resources to help the Campbell Clinic Foundation grow. Your support means we make an even bigger impact

on our field and the communities our Campbell family serves.

On behalf of the Campbell family, a huge thanks goes out to Jack Blair, who served as Chairman of our Board of Trustees from 2001-21. His leadership, mentorship and service are unparalleled. We are forever in his debt and a stronger, inspired organization thanks to him.

Gratefully, James H. Beaty, MD Interim Chairman, Board of Trustees

New Campbell Clinic Foundation Trustee

Barbara Williamson has been a significant leader in the nonprofit community, having served boards and organizations addressing healthcare, education and the arts. She is a loyal donor to the Campbell Clinic Foundation and has been a patient at the clinic.

Thank you, Jack Blair

The entire Campbell family owes a debt of gratitude to Jack R. Blair, who served as Campbell Clinic Foundation Chairman of the Board of Trustees from 2000-21. Jack’s involvement with Campbell began when he joined Richards Medical in Memphis in 1980; he went on to become a leader at Smith & Nephew. During Jack’s tenure, the Foundation Board expanded to include community leaders, built an endowment that now exceeds $9 million and developed our orthopaedic research program to more than 150 studies. He’s been an extraordinary mentor, visionary and cheerleader for the mission throughout. We salute Jack’s exceptional service, commitment and leadership.

In Memoriam:

Larry Papasan

With great sadness, we mourn the death of Campbell Clinic Foundation Trustee Emeritus Larry Papasan on May 1, 2022. Larry was an extraordinary leader, family man and friend. He made a profound impact on countless organizations and individuals throughout our community and throughout his life. The Campbell Clinic Foundation is fortunate to be among those organizations he served with grace, generosity and vision. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Dianne, family and friends, especially many of you who were close to him.

Interim Board Chairman James H. Beaty, MD with Jack R. Blair.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES Keep up with the Campbell Clinic Foundation! @campbellclinicfdn @campbellfoundationmemphis @campbell-clinic-foundation

“Because your parents are always the last to know,” said JaRieya. “I wanted to make something that a kid could hand to a pastor or a guidance counselor. The whole program revolves around the card.”

JaRieya’s card has led to a full-fledged charitable effort offering baskets of resources for children who might be getting bullied. The World Anti-Bullying campaign also includes a website, Instagram account and a hand puppet named Jade that is JaRieya’s alter ego.

JaRieya is special, said Dr. Sawyer, but the bullying that she’s faced is all too frequent for children with juvenile scoliosis. “I’ll see kids each day who are bullied due to their condition,” he said. “These kids have tremendous courage.”

Dr. Sawyer should know: He’s a national expert on pediatric spinal deformity as well as pediatric

orthopaedic trauma, and has just become President of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA), the third Campbell physician to lead this prestigious organization, following S. Terry Canale, MD and James H. Beaty, MD.

JaRieya has a complex condition, but Dr. Sawyer points out that the “clinical research we do at the Campbell Clinic Foundation puts us in a place to offer JaRieya state of the art care.”

research, teaching and patient care to improve and succeed in ways practices without these tools and information cannot do,” said Sawyer.

Previously, children who needed advanced spinal care would have to leave Memphis, he said, but no longer. Campbell’s collaboration with the top healthcare centers across the country who do this highly specialized care “pushes our

By this time next year, JaRieya will have had her final appointment with Dr. Sawyer. The state of the art magnetic rods that have helped straighten her spine are almost finished expanding, giving her internal organs the room they need to grow. “We need to keep the spine deformity in check so it doesn’t affect her heart and lungs,” said Dr. Sawyer. “It’s highly specialized care.”

Yet not seeing Dr. Sawyer regularly is a prospect JaRieya, now 17, is not looking forward to.

“Dr. Sawyer was the one who encouraged me to make the card, and suggested the wristband, too,” said JaRieya of her friend and physician. “I hope the surgery part is over with, but I’d like to see him more.”

It certainly seems likely. As Dr. Sawyer said, “JaRieya’s mission to educate students, teachers and healthcare providers aligns with ours at Campbell.”

Patient JaRieya with Campbell Clinic pediatric orthopaedic surgeon Jeffrey R. Sawyer, MD, who is also the current President of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America!
The research we do puts us in a place to offer state of the art care.

CP Clinic Co-Director Warner Advocates for Cerebral Palsy Patients

William C. Warner, MD, pediatric orthopaedic surgeon and co-director of the Campbell Clinic Foundation-led Center of Excellence for Cerebral Palsy Care and Research, represented the Foundation and partner Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital on a congressional hearing panel during CP Awareness Month in March! Congressman Steve Cohen invited Dr. Warner and other advocates to build support for $5M in dedicated funding for CP research.

Cerebral palsy affects one out of every 345 children born in the United States. More than 760,000 Americans have CP, and countless more individuals are affected by the

diagnosis. CP leads to one or more developmental disabilities, affecting speech, vision, and cognitive function. Children and adults often undergo orthopaedic procedures to correct deformities, including abnormal muscles and bones.

Our CP Center joins allies and advocates across the country in improving care, research and investment to halt the devastating impact of CP on the lives of those who have it and prevent new cases from emerging.

Thanks to Dr. Warner and Dr. David Spence for their leadership of this incredible Center, which served 417 patients in 2021 alone!

The Diamond Campaign

In celebration of the Campbell Clinic Foundation’s 75th anniversary, the Diamond Anniversary campaign has been launched to support the long-term growth and expansion of resident training and clinical research efforts.

The Foundation’s achievements in medical education and leadership are only outnumbered by the patients who move and live better, thanks to “the Campbell Way.”

Alumni are asked to pledge $7,500 or more to this campaign, which will conclude in December 2022. Our goal is to engage 75 Campbell alumni by the time our 75th anniversary year concludes.

We recognize those generous alumni who have already invested in this initiative to advance education, deliver transformational care, and make patients better.
