Matthew Rasberry was undergoing physical therapy at Campbell Clinic to relieve his aching knees when he learned about a clinical trial that sounded intriguing.
Campbell Clinic physician, Santos Martinez, MD, was leading a Food and Drug Administration-funded study of a treatment for knee osteoarthritis. Rasberry, having battered his knees through years of playing soccer, enrolled in the 2016 trial, hoping to
get a free X-ray, MRI and learn more about his knees. “It seemed there was very little downside and potentially very high upside,” said Rasberry, a veteran of three anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions.
That study was among a growing number of clinical trials that Campbell Clinic physicians conduct each year in hopes of finding ways to improve their overall care of patients. “Research can affect our patients’ quality of life, so
it’s really important,” said Dr. Frederick Azar, Chief of Staff of Campbell Clinic. We don’t make scientific advances without research.”
During the last 15 years, a concerted effort to step up staff-driven research has resulted in approximately 150 clinical trials being conducted each year.

Dear Friends,
I am very excited and proud to serve as the new Chairman of the Campbell Clinic Foundation Board of Trustees. As a grateful patient myself, I have seen the drive and motivation to find the best solutions to treat injuries and relieve pain. And, I have been moved by others who have overcome big obstacles with the help of the Campbell family.
As a “frequent flyer,” I know first-hand what makes the Foundation a leader in orthopaedic care in the Mid-South and around the world. Innovation and problem-solving are at the heart of what they do.
With YOUR help, the Campbell Clinic Foundation conducts impactful research in orthopaedic procedures
and treatments that would have been impossible 10 years ago. And we are training the next generation of skilled and compassionate orthopaedic surgeons through our residency and fellowship programs. Thousands benefit from our Cerebral Palsy Center and outreach clinics.
Please consider a donation to help MOVE LIVES.
Join me as we secure the Campbell Clinic Foundation’s future for generations to come.

“We transitioned from performing retrospective record reviews to conducting prospective, randomized clinical trials that are initiated by our staff,” said Margaret Knack, Research Manager at Campbell Clinic Foundation. “We went from doing simple studies to ones that can have a greater impact on patient care and patient outcomes. We’ve also increased participation in national and international study groups and conduct collaborative studies with other institutions.”
Collaboration and sharing data are especially beneficial when a clinical study isn’t large enough to provide an adequate sample size at a single institution. These multi-center studies produce a statistically significant result and greater study impact.
Patient Matthew Rasberry’s participation in two studies has helped him be more active, especially with his new daughter.
Some of Campbell Clinic’s research studies have resulted in better pain management. For example, a six-month study of 400 patients with shoulder pain, led by Quin Throckmorton, MD, found that one steroid medication actually increased the pain temporarily, so thanks to this research, use has since been discontinued.
Currently, William Mihalko, MD is leading an FDA-funded study to examine the occurrence of metal hypersensitivity in patients who have had a total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Implants and tissue specimens will be retrieved from patients who are having a revision TKA to determine if their persistent pain is related to an autoimmune response to the metal in the implant. The goal is to predict which patients are likely to react to cobalt-chromium implants and substitute titanium ones instead.
Rasberry, 35, has signed up to participate in an investigator-initiated clinical trial led by Marcus Ford, MD, comparing use of oral Tranexamic Acid (TXA) versus placebo among TKA patients in the early postoperative period.
Rasberry shared, “We need more of these studies so we can increase the knowledge of what works and doesn’t work. If I had known sooner about cadaver cartilage implants, I might have done that before my knee was too far gone.”
Dr. Ford performed a TKA on Rasberry’s right knee last June. “Today, it’s fantastic,” Rasberry said. “I can go on my morning walks without any pain. I can crawl and chase my one-year-old daughter around, which was the main reason I got my knee done. I want to be able to play with her without any limitations.”
We are grateful to our Board of Trustees!
“At the end of the day, the studies can dramatically influence the way we practice medicine as providers.”
— Marcus C. Ford, MD, Campbell Clinic
The study “Muscle Activation Patterns during Active External Rotation after Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty: An Electrophysiological Study of the Teres Minor and Associated Musculature” was a study honored with the prestigious 2023 Charles S. Neer Award in March 2023!
Campbell Clinic contributors included Quin Throckmorton, MD; Tyler Brolin, MD; William Mihalko, MD, David Bernholt, MD; Frederick Azar, MD; former Sports Medicine fellow William Polio, MD; and research manager, Margaret Knack.
The UTHSC contributors include Blake Hajek; Kunal Singhal, PhD; Shannon Hughes, PhD; Alexis
Nelson; Chi-Yang Chiu, PhD; and Tristan Hayes.
The Neer Award was presented during the American Shoulder & Elbow Surgeons Specialty Day during the
American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting. Receiving this award on behalf of the Campbell team are (L-R): Tyler Brolin, MD; Margaret Knack; Quin Throckmorton, MD; and Fred Azar, MD.
Since 2019, the Campbell Clinic Foundation has offered a “gap year” program for college graduates aspiring to attend medical school and medical students pursuing an orthopaedic surgery residency. Research Scholars work side-by-side with Campbell Clinic physicians, research staff and study partners to gain vast hands-on experience and insight. Scholars are actively involved with study design, data
collection and analysis, literature review, institutional review and approvals, patient enrollment, ethics and study completion and manuscript preparation. This is a paid year-long position, with an option to renew for a second year.
Scholars play a critical role in our growing research program and team, and we’re so proud of their contributions and achievements!
Current Research Scholars Carlos Rivera, Derek Dixon and Andrew Pierce
Since 1924, the UTHSC-Campbell Clinic Orthopaedic Surgery Residency has trained physicians who serve patients and communities throughout the world. This intensive five-year program enrolls eight physicians each year for a total of 40 residents.
We visited with two interns, or first-year residents, to familiarize you with our program:
Robert Neel, MD, a Memphis native who attended medical school at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, and Stanley Eboh, MD, a Toronto, Ontario, Canada native, who attended Texas Tech University Health Science Center.
What inspired you to pursue orthopaedic surgery?
Eboh: As an athlete, orthopaedics was always around me, as were injuries! The pathology, rehabilitation and recovery process fascinated me and piqued my interest in orthopaedics very early. When I was 15 years old, my mom decided to go to medical school, and she further inspired my interest in medical specialization.
Neel: I find gratification in taking care of others, and there are endless opportunities to do so in orthopaedic surgery. Whether it is an acute fracture or chronic degenerative joint disease, orthopaedic surgeons relieve patients from pain, provide an increase in functionality, and improve patients’ livelihoods.
What appealed to you most about the Campbell Clinic program?
Eboh: First and foremost, the emphasis on operative experience is second to none—it’s what distinguishes this
program. Second, Campbell Clinic has garnered worldwide respect for superior training, clinical and industry leadership and the opportunities available after residency. Third, the camaraderie is obvious. It’s comforting and reassuring to have a strong support system.
Neel: Campbell Clinic initially appealed to me because of the rich history, strong reputation, and top-tier surgical training. As a medical student at UTHSC, I worked with Campbell staff and residents, which allowed me to get a realistic feel for the strong relationships and teamwork. I am fortunate to be a member of the Campbell Clinic family.
Dr. Eboh, many residents say they love the unique Campbell residency “operative” experience. Explain what that means.
Campbell offers exceptional hands-on experience and training in the operating room, particularly at Regional One
Health. The model is challenging—and it often requires you to work through the night—but you accumulate exceptional skills and gain far more exposure and experience. Ultimately, this makes you more confident and comfortable dealing with complex situations throughout your medical career.
Dr. Neel, you have a poster to present at the Mid-America Orthopaedic Society Annual Meeting. How did this opportunity arise your intern year? I will present a poster for a shoulder study led by Dr. David Bernholt. I began working on this project during medical school, and I contributed to data collection, manuscript writing, and now the poster production and presentation. It has been a great experience to see our hard work on a study come to fruition.

Since January 2018, the Campbell Clinic Foundation, in partnership with Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, has led the Center of Excellence for Cerebral Palsy Care and Research, a comprehensive outpatient clinic focused on serving children with cerebral palsy.
Since the 1980s, when covering the inaugural Memphis in May Triathlon, Doug Hiller, MD, has treated endurance athletes. This spring, he and colleagues launched the Global Triathlon Injury Database (Globaltrisafety.org) with the International Federation for Olympic Triathlons to manage and facilitate analysis of data for triathlon organizations worldwide. In collaboration with partners, from the US Olympic Committee to IronMan, Hiller and colleagues examine the frequency and severity of injury and medical events in order to optimize care at race locations.

Hunter Medical, LLC was founded in 2016 by Lee Hunter, MD, MBA, an upper extremity sub-specialist, focusing specifically on the elbow and hand. The original ElbowLOC idea was born out of the need for a highly-functional and easily-assembled surgical arm positioner to facilitate supine elbow surgery. After seven years, helping thousands of surgeons and hundreds of practices yield more efficient, predictable, and cost-effective surgeries with this device, the ElbowLOC Arm Positioning System was acquired by Arthrex in late 2022. Congratulations, Dr. Hunter!

Campbell Clinic pediatric orthopaedic surgeons, David Spence, MD, and William Warner, Jr., MD, serve as co-directors for a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, therapists, seating and mobility specialists and orthotists who work together to serve 425 patients with cerebral palsy (CP) each year. This “one-stop shop” for CP care is the only one of its kind in the Mid-South.
CP develops as a result of a static injury to the brain either prior to or during birth, and can vary greatly in type and severity. It can affect the child’s ability to walk, talk, or even sit without pain.
“The goal for everyone at the CP Center is to assist in making every child with CP better and as independent as possible,” explains Dr. Warner. “We also guide patients’ families as they navigate care for their child from birth until they are adults.”

Relationships with local and national partners, networks and centers have helped advance our understanding of CP and CP patient care. Since 2020, the Plough Foundation-funded equipment closet, aka “Mobility Lab,” assists families in securing ageand size-appropriate equipment for their child. In 2022, the CP Center joined the Cerebral Palsy Research Network (CPRN), the largest collaboration of hospitals and community members working together to improve
Meanwhile, research covers everything from patients’ pulmonary function to vaccine compliance to bone fragility. In 2022 alone, “Let’s Get Everyone Moving and Keep Them Moving Throughout the Lifespan” and “Using a Telephone Screening Tool to Identify Bone Health Risk in Children with Cerebral Palsy” were presented at the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM) 2022 Annual Meeting.
The CP Center is possible thanks to the transformational $1 million commemorative grant from the Children’s Foundation of Memphis and hundreds of generous donors and partners.
What’s next? The Center must expand to meet the complex needs of more Mid-South children with CP and their families.
One mom explained, “Everyone was super helpful and wonderful. I was very thankful that everyone could see my daughter all at once. This was very convenient since we travel to come here.” Patients and families need you.
Will you help us?
On behalf of the hundreds of patients and families served since 2018, thank you to all who have generously supported the CP Center.
Our Hearts to Your Soles
On November 15, 2022, the Campbell Clinic Foundation partnered with Memphis Union Mission to provide foot and nail care to 150 members of the local homeless community. “Our Hearts to Your Soles” is an annual event, where Campbell Clinic physicians, residents, fellows and volunteers provide care and distribute new shoes, donated by Red Wing Shoes, and socks, toiletries and snacks donated by generous Campbell Clinic and Foundation employees. We extend a huge thanks to Campbell Clinic’s Dr. David Richardson, a foot and ankle specialist, who has led this outreach for 15 years.
Campbell Celebrates
“Diamonds Are Forever”
After a three-year hiatus, Campbell Clinic Foundation held the Campbell Celebrates gala on October 21, 2022. It is with deep sympathy we pass along that Joseph C. Weller, Emeritus Trustee of the Campbell Clinic Foundation, passed away on December 15, 2022.
His generous and cheerful spirit will always be remembered by his friends and family. His civic and philanthropic accomplishments were great. Joe served on the Campbell Clinic Foundation Board of Trustees for many years and led the Finance Committee.
We extend our condolences to his family and the many individuals and organizations who benefited from his generosity and leadership.
