DEDICATION: LEON DYER 2

This year, due to his packed schedule, Leon took a step back from heading the Avodian, so it is only fitting that this year’s 2019 Avodian is dedicated to the one, and only, Leon Dyer. To say Camp Avoda is lucky to have him is an understatement. Leon does so much for Camp Avoda and we are grateful for his service to Avoda for the past 17 summers. Leon started under Paul Davis’ management as Woodshop Instructor. Became a bunk counselor and Head Counselor and over the last few years, Assistant Director. One of Leon’s defining characteristics is his work ethic. He puts his all into everything he does. Each summer he does a great job and gives 110%. He will work till 3:30 AM to ensure all of the many items on his plate are complete for the next day. It seems hard to understand what the next level up is, because he sets such a high standard. But each subsequent summer arrives and he elevates to another level, recreating new systems and ways of doing things, and making things more fun for campers, and easier for staff and administration. Having said that, he is demanding. He is always thinking of new ways to incent staff to push harder. Why? So that Camp Avoda succeeds! At the same time he is fair and has a good sense of justice and equity. He is fair and patient. And for someone who is soft spoken, his confident presence and leadership style demands respect. Sometimes you have to look closely at his wry smile to know that under his business-like demeanor, that he knows exactly what kids want. At the same time, he establishes a rapport with campers, CIT’s and staff alike. In the “off season” Leon is a teacher at the

Chenery Middle school. He works with kids all year and is just as busy there: serving as committee leads, running sports tournaments, planning events, winning accolades there, while teaching classes and inspiring kids as well. When we finally convinced Leon to be an administrator and no longer a bunk counselor, he made the move very easily. But he still likes to spend time with campers, leading overnights and letting the kids jump on his back while swimming, driving the boat for waterskiing class, and this summer: inviting bunks to the head table to join us for meals. He knows what kids like, how they think, and how they operate. He will devise games, challenges, and his playful spirit sneaks out when you least expect it. Leon is a dedicated ambassador of youth. Leon is thorough. He has short term plans, mid-range plans, long term plans, and of course contingency plans. He can change and adapt on the fly in the rare case that the initial plan didn’t completely work. He can plan and put large scale events together with ease. He likes to create efficiencies and better ways of doing things. Did we mention that he can fix anything? Leon has a firm grasp on the facilities and understands how things work. He is a multifaceted and multi-talented individual. He is creative, open-minded and willing to explore change. There is an adage that says if you want something done, you look around the room and find the busiest person. And then you ask that person for help. Leon is that person and Camp Avoda thanks him for his many years of positively affecting Camp Avoda in so many ways.

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR What a summer it has been! Camp Avoda is a special place. This is my 23 rd summer on the Shores of Tispaquin and I can attest to the power of Avoda. (Camp started in 1927, 93 summers ago so I have been with camp for 25% of its history!) We create special moments that celebrate TEAM achievement and defeat (yes even in defeat we teach kids that hustle, heart and teamwork trumps it all), as well as success for each camper, CIT and staff member INDIVIDUALLY. These moments and growth happen on a daily basis and over the long term – over years. We plant seeds that certainly grow and sprout as our boys become young men who then become community members. I am proud to work for such a special organization. I write this as I am on the bus leading the Six Flags field trip. I mention this for the reason to illustrate what it takes to run a summer camp - we are always working and multitasking. We have lots of moving parts. And we say it all the time: only “Camp People” understand a day in the life at camp. So much happens! So much going on! And it all gets done. Everyone – literally everyone – has to chip in to help make camp happen. Campers do their part: certainly participating and playing, but they help too: Bunk 14 campers set up for services for example. Bunk 1 and 2 might need to clean the grove after a barbecue. And after an all day tournament I will ask the several campers I see to help me move tables back to where they belong. CIT’s – this is your community service summer. Camp wouldn’t look the same or run as well without your efforts on a daily basis. And thank you for the open minds and feedback about your Outward Bound Trip. I hope in years to come, those seeds reveal a positive experience. Bunk Counselors are on the front lines with the kids. The bunk staff – you are critical components of camp success: fostering brotherhood, leadership, spirit and tradition. I will let you know if we hit the 95%. It all started during pre-camp training a few months back. We had discussions, set up camp and worked hard to prepare camp for the campers and summer. A good example of “only camp people” makes me think of

KEN SHIFMAN

the day we had a ton of campus prep work to be done. As a group of 30 plus, we walked around camp together and at each stop or task, a few people either volunteered or Leon assigned them. We got the work done efficiently and of course it was more fun as there was a game aspect to it – and we were all in it JILL SHIFMAN together. It has been a • Cooking with Jill pleasure working with • Jill of All Trades you all. The administration, specialty staff, kitchen staff, health staff plus all our contractors also work tireless hours to ensure a safe and successful summer. Thank you for all you do! As I have said before, we all pick each other up. People don’t have strictly defined roles as we all need to contribute. We are camp people. I am proud that we attract and retain such dedicated, hard workers and I feel fortunate to work with you all each day during the summer. This summer we have competed against other camps with mixed results. I admire the practice hours and spirit in representing Avoda on the courts and fields. We have competed internally with passion and effort in light events like Battle of the Super Teams, moderately competitive events like League, and our heart and soul cornerstone events of Desert War and Color War. We had super-hot days, very little rain, a little sleet, talent shows by the staff and campers, a trampoline show, and lots of other fun things in between. It’s always a fun summer at Avoda. Camp People know how much we pack into a day at camp. We come together as a community whether it’s an event like Grandparents Day or Bubba Day, we step up, we work hard, we give our all, and we enjoy it all together. I hope the lessons learned and experiences gained from Camp Avoda impact your lives in a positive manner. I hope to see all of our campers, staff, and CIT’s next summer. Another summer in the books – keep it going! Go Avoda! -Ken

RONNI GUTTIN Turtles, those small animals with funny heads and hard-shell bodies that live in the sand and in the sea. Kind of a funny thing to influence the rest of my thoughts, but that’s camp for you! Early in the day, a bunk oneer caught a very small turtle at the waterfront. He set it up in a box with sand and planned to feed it some lettuce from the kitchen. He and his friends were pretty disappointed when Lee suggested that they put the turtle back in its natural habitat in order to survive. With sad faces, and some complaining, they did it. It was a short- lived disappointment as he and the rest of his friends moved happily through the remainder of their camp day. Funny how things happen at camp. After dinner, a group of sophomores came running to me from the basketball court to say that a turtle had just laid some eggs under the bleachers. What should they do? I told them not to touch them and that the turtle would know what to do for its eggs. They put an orange cone nearby to protect the turtle family from the dangers of a crew of campers! It was a day for the turtles at Camp Avoda. Some campers and staff are like our turtle friends. They poke their heads out and get a taste of everything that is going on, pulling their necks back in when something is new. They keep poking and poking until they are comfortable in their new landscape. They grow and grow with time, absorbing all that the world has to offer. Others are more like puppies, exploring wildly and openly and sniffing out every new thing simultaneously. With a constant need for attention and new experiences, they, too absorb what their world has to offer. And grow. Some Avodians resemble the turtles. Moving through camp a bit at a time, taking something from every day to add to their stores of Camp Avoda experiences. Some are like puppies, sniffing it out and grabbing it all in at the same time! They too, are building their Camp Avoda experiences. It’s amazing, we Avodians are all a little bit different,

4

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR but we all have Avoda in common. That, my friends, is the magic of Camp Avoda. I think I am a hybrid. Some days, I feel like a turtle. I like to poke my head into everything….just a little bit and absorb it all slowly. Many days, I am like a puppy sniffing my way into things that may or may not matter to anyone else, but are important to me. Like the mama turtle, camp seems to give everyone what they need to grow and develop and maintain an attachment to camp. As I write this, we are not yet done with the summer of 2019. I am still sniffing around and grateful to the counselors who share my passion for helping campers find their way. I appreciate the team who poke their heads out every day and peek into every crack and crevice of camp to make sure all is well. I have learned a few life lessons from the sea turtle: 1. Life begins on the beach. 2. Sometimes you have to dig yourself out of a hole. 3. Keep the faith, you’ll make it. 4. Never forget where you came from. 5. Life is better with a good friend. Hmmmmm..... sounds like camp!

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

GARY RABINOWITZ

There was an old UPS ad that utilized the refrain “What can brown do for you”? For whatever reason, I think of Avoda when I hear this inquiry. I think about what Avoda does for our community.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Avoda gives us friendships Avoda gives us memories Avoda gives us experiences Avoda gives us confidence Avoda gives us family Avoda gives us unconditional love Avoda gives us bugles and PA announcements. Avoda gives us something to look forward to Avoda gives us the ability to expand our comfort zone Avoda gives us laughter…lots of laughter Avoda gives us the ability to win humbly and lose with grace Avoda gives us the knowledge that Havdalah means to divide Avoda gives us Color War songs and plays Avoda gives us bagels and lox on Saturday mornings

• •

Avoda gives us the shower house, the grove and Tispaquin Avoda gives us great music (It’s where I was first introduced to The Beatles, Stones, The Who, The Dead and The Kinks) Avoda gives us the best leadership team in the universe. Ken, Ronni and Leon are an unmatched trio that puts the campers and camp first at all times. Avoda is lucky to have these there guide us. Avoda gives us the best staff and CIT’s in the league. Thanks for the effort and making sure the campers have the best experience possible.

There is so much more, but I am on a word limit and we all know, I have a tendency to ramble. Thanks for another wonderful summer Camp Avoda. I guess it’s time to start counting the days until 2020.

MESSAGE FROM THE CAMP ADVISOR & WATERFRONT DIRECTOR Dear Camp Avoda, I am in awe of you. Another year come and gone. Where does time go? Life is a mystery but one thing is certain: my love for Avoda. Day to day, I walk around with Luna Bear and I see endless smiles, brotherhood, camaraderie, and friendship. I am part of the most amazing community on Earth and it is such a blessing. Every day during the year, I look forward to returning back to camp, and as I write my profile, I shed a tear of joy and happiness for an amazing summer at Camp Avoda. I am sad it is coming to an end and while it is here it is my sworn duty to embrace the moment, be of service, and spread love to every corner of Camp Avoda. I want to thank you all for your continued love and support. I learn so much everyday from campers, counselors, and administrators alike. I am grateful for all the love, receptivity, great conversations, and wonderful memories. Waterfront: Best staff in camp. Maritime style. Lakefront living. Coolest crew around. Respect. One love. Couldn’t have done it without you. You guys rock. Amazing memories. Great laughs. Teamwork.

LEE GARR

Artie Vidal and Mitch Hernandez: Best Assistants around. Thanks for everything. You guys are the future of Avoda. Keep coming back. Leon: You are the consistent flow of time here. We both started on staff in 2003. You are a camp legend. Thanks for everything you do for camp. We would all be lost without you. Mad love and respect. Ken, Ronni, Gary: Amazing working with you. Camp is incredible thanks to all your hard work. Nothing but love and respect. I enjoy working with you guys. It is truly a pleasure and an honor. Thank you. Luna Bear: You are my baby girl. Your second year of camp has come to end. You have never been happier. Camp Avoda is your favorite place. Every camper adores you. We love you. 10 months to a better life.

AVODIAN STAFF With the infamous Dyer announcing his retirement from Avodian staff, powerhouse replacements were needed to fill the void. Facing big expectations, the tag team of JCs Max Scribner and Matt Peljovich combined with the innovation of Sharon Sock proved to revolutionize the art of Avodian. Bunk 14ers Daniel Rashes, Charlie ‘Chuck’ Zuker, Ron Edry, and Michael Shnidman Jr. provided insightful writing and helpful labor to keep this operation running. With many busy periods and late nights, we present this year’s 2019 Avodian.

BUNK 14 OVERNIGHT As every year goes by, campers grow closer to becoming members of the illustrious Bunk 14. One of the many privileges earned once you have made your way to the final cabin is the ability to go on the 14 overnight. Shrouded in mystery, every year it is a treat to discover where you and your brothers will venture and what activities you will do there. 2K19’s journey began with a two-hour long drive to the Zuker Family Ranch where Avoda legend Bobby Zuker grilled up some stellar burgers and dogs. After a brief swim and thanks to the Avodian for his hospitality, we were off to our main destination. The three-and-a-half hour drive was long but with friends to talk to and jams to boot, we made due. Once at our destination, which remains secret, we were housed in a beautiful log cabin on the lake. After some more BBQ courtesy of Lee Garr, we went to bed for the night. The next morning, it was time for rafting. Split into two boats, we went out on to the rapids. While one boat managed to stay dry, the other had many men overboard. Perhaps the most exciting was when yours truly, Daniel Rashes, was smacked by a ginormous wave, thrust from the boat out onto the most severe rapid. I had to fight for my life and thought it could have been the end, but with the instruction of our guide Eric and the brute strength of Big D, I found my way back on the raft. Though the journey was nearly perilous, we all made it through. The rest of that day was restful for the necessary recovery, and I assure you, naps were taken. Since everyone was restful it was time to hit the road at the beginning of our final day. After a stop at Dunkin for some breakfast sandwiches, we were off to the beach where we would spend a good chunk of the day. After some summer fun, we got back on the road and headed into Boston for a feast, Itallian style. While we feasted on veal marsala and chicken parmesan, we reminisced on the trip. With full bellies, we returned to camp.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES

4TH OF JULY The Fourth of July is an annual holiday celebrated by Americans nationally. As campers at Avoda can’t make it out to the fireworks over the Charles, we bring the celebration to camp. After daily practices like breakfast and bunk clean-up, the festivities began when campers faced-off against the evil counselor gladiators in various competitions. Next, it was time for the classic American hotdog eating contest. While it was a tough competition between the likes of Brett Litner, Will Cooper, and Jake Romanow, it was ultimately one of our very own Kitchen Boys, Jonathan, that took the win. Now that everyone’s stomachs were full, the mud wrestling began. With various match-ups, such as our director Ken “AAA” Shiffman versus all of Bunk 1, it was a sight to behold. After some showers and a barbeque lunch, it was time for the annual carnival. As the bouncy houses were blown up and the popcorn popped, camper lined up in anticipation for their favorite attractions. Snow Cones were consumed, along with cotton candy, and everyone had a great time. After an egg-toss and dinner, everyone went to the showers to prepare for the bon-fire and chip ceremony. Campers took their seat on the beachfront, looking out to the lake and the 10-foot bonfire, erected by Bunk 14. The fire was then lit and Avoda legend Paul G. Davis told the camp the haunting story of “The Witches Cove.” When the tale was over, one representative from each bunk came up to the front to share what Avoda means to them, throwing a wood-chip into the flame when they finished their remarks. As old Avodians and returning alumni spoke, it was clear how much love people have for camp. Once the camp alma mater was sung and the fireworks went off, everyone on that beach knew it was another great Avodian Independence Day in the books.

FLAGRUSH As the first night of summer finally arrived, campers were on the edge of their benches, waiting in anticipation for the announcement of the summer’s first evening activity. It was when the two words, “Flag Rush,” were uttered that the campers truly let their excitement loose. As campers raced back to their bunk to prepare for the game, eagerly tucking socks into their waistbands and throwing on their cleats, Avoda’s hardworking CITs prepared the field. With Captains Shnidman, Zuker, Rashes, and Tercatin guiding their underlings to their positions, the whistle was seconds away from blowing. The players stepped into their positions and the game began. Right off the bat, twins Marcus and Skyler Levin rushed together for a flag. All looked promising until Bunk 14er Jeremy “Jeremu” Rossin used his unparalleled wingspan to snag the brothers. The senior camper proved himself on the field, making him a force to be reckoned with throughout the rest of the summer. As the game continued, flags were being scored left and right, resulting in the captains making sure players were playing defence. The second half started and it seemed as if blue had the game under control. It was when white initiated the “four man rush” that the tide began to turn. Gabe Kurland, Ronald Edry, Max Levitt, and Jonah Vendito made a rush to the center flag. As each one of them scored consecutively, it was clear who would catch the dub. White went into penalty rushes with the lead, prepared to stop their opponents from scoring both of the rushes. Blue had dreams of scoring both of their rushes as well as stopping white’s. The first rush began and blue sent out seniors Ezra Dubowitz and Max Jacoby. While the shifty Dubowitz tried to rush it past the defenders, he ultimately was forced to pass to the thundering Jacoby. The flag went flying through the air, closing in on its target. All were watching in awe, could they pull it off? Jacoby reached out only to have the flag hit the ground. The game was coming to a close. If white scored their rush the game was over. Zachie Sadow-Hassenberg and Cole Busny went out to win the night. Zachie took the flag, threw it to Busny, and the latter scored, winning the game. The white team, lead by their captains, ran to second base. This opening night flag rush promised a summer of competition and celebration ahead.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES

ZOOBALL

On the second night of the Camp Avoda season, the campers readied up for the first zooball game of the summer, which would turn out to be one of the most exhilarating events of the first week. The staff announced the teams, and campers laced up their cleats to then head out to the field. Captains Jeremy Rossin, Noah Gornstein, Adam Tercatin, and Ron Edry demonstrated strong leadership on the field and used their boundless experience to give knowledgeable advice to the new campers. Captain Gornstein had a strong and surprising showing when he accomplished three drop kick goals in the first half alone. Another heart-stopping moment occurred when Sam McGilpin had an immaculate diving save and the ball dropped directly into his hands. Similarly, Drew Busney, Daniel Rashes, Sam Kaplan, and Spencer Oransky all had strong performances for their respective teams. Bunk 14er Julian “JuJu” Adario led the blue team to victory with a game winning cross field shot as time ran out, leaving the white team in disappointing shock. Being victorious, the blue team stormed second base, jumping up and down, cheering “We’re number one, we’re number one!”.

AVODA FIELD TRIPS • MOUNT MONADNUCK • TREE TOP ADVENTURES • BOSTON AQUARIUM • WATER WIZ • SEEKONK FAMILY FUN CENTER • SIX FLAGS NEW ENGLAND • URBAN ADVENTURES BEACH DAY Every now and then, Avodians get a chance to visit sunny Nantasket beach for some fun in the sun. Campers walk along the shoreline and play volleyball on the courts along the beach. Plenty stop by Dunkin’ for some coffee and doughnuts. Even though the beach was beautiful, many spent their time inside at the local arcade, racking up tickets and collecting prizes at the counter. After many games and plenty of coffee, campers were certain it was a day well spent.

RED SOX On field trip day, all of camp made their way onto coach busses and began their drive to Fenway Park. At the park, everyone enjoyed America’s pastime with Fenway Frank in hand. With Chris Sale on the mound, the game went by fast and the Red Sox shut-out the Blue Jays 5-0. After the game, camper boarded the buses again to make their way to dinner. Freshman-Sophomores went to Fire and Ice for their dinner as Junior-Seniors made their way around Faneuil Hall. With full bellies, everyone made their way back to camp after a busy day filled with fun.

DESERT WAR

Desert War is undoubtedly the climax of the first session, pitting white against blue in a tireless race to the lake. When campers exited busses to find the path into camp, many anticipated the excitement to come. Staff stormed the lot, screaming “It’s Desert War!” as campers joined in. Teams were announced and players ran to their respective side of the path. Only four campers names remained unannounced, captains, Rashes, Shnidman, Zuker, and Sadow-Hasenberg from the illustrious Bunk 14. Captains and team staff walked down the path and joined their teams, either the Blue Odyssey or the White Rhinos. Once only generals were left to announce, Ben Alexander and Tyler Goldstein led their teams to their headquarters. Staff gave players a pep talk before sending them back to their bunks to get some rest in preparation for the long day ahead. After a silent breakfast, teams prepared for the game, applying sunscreen and dressing accordingly. Shortly thereafter, the game began: The first quarter began with a bang. The blue team rushed to no avail and white followed with a rush in return. Despite both teams’ efforts, the quarter ended scoreless. The second quarter got off to an even more

88

DESERT WAR

exciting start; blue rushed and sophomore Ryan Jacoby managed to score the Field Flag, giving the Odyssey a 1-0 lead. Captain Shnidman of the Odyssey then proceeded to snag the same flag and pass it to Max Leavitt for the score. Unfortunately for blue, the flag was called off due to a penalty. Teams tried hard to score leading into halftime, however there remained only one point on the board. After lunch and an uneventful third quarter, the game came down to the wire as the fourth quarter began. As White continued to rush, time and time again, their players were stopped by Blue’s defenders, who were eager to win the game. Though they fought well, White had continued to rush until they were out of free jailbreaks and remained without a flag scored. With many of White’s players in jail, Blue began to rush. With minutes left, Zach Hyman scored an open field flag. Soon after, the Odyssey began to score left and right, flag after flag, and it became clear who had won the game. With a final score of 9-0, Blue rushed to the lake, accomplishing the first ever shut-out on the traditional field. The war well fought and the game was close, however, the Blue Odyssey emerged victorious.

WHITE JAGUARS WHITE JAGUARS FREE CHOICE SONG

Maggie May By Rod Stewart (0:30 - )

Wake up jumping, I’ve waited so long to get out of school Today’s the day, ten months and now I’m back with you Turn on Tispaquin, now the summer can begin Oh, This camp I can’t describe, with words I learned how to call you home, but at first I felt alone Our time is short, and that’s what really hurts The days go by, with my brothers all we do is play Leading in bunk fourteen, this is everything Through all the laughs and jokes, the memories left to hold Oh, My time at camp has flied, too fast You made this a second home, through the years you’ve watched me grow Without this place, I don’t know what I’d do

WHITE JAGUARS ALMA MATTER SONG

Father and Son by Cat Stevens

It’s our time to get away, Nerves are up, but rest easy You’re so young, that’s okay, I’ll be here to lead the way Take your place, settle in, Find new friends to make memories Look at me, I am here, there’s no worries I was once like you are now, and I know that it’s not easy, to accept that this is home for summer So take your time, have a thought, and give it everything you’ve got Fourteen will be here tomorrow, although I may not How can I try to explain, talk to you and pass the reigns Never thought this day would come, it’s too soon

All I needed was a place, to spend, my summers at But now I’ve learned, that Avoda is where I belong You showed me how to live alone, hold my biggest milestones

From the moment I arrived, Avoda snuck into my mind My times through, and I know that I have to go away But you, will carry on the flame

Oh, My time at camp has flied, too fast You made this a second home, through the years you’ve watched me grow I love it here, this feeling will not go

It’s your time to get away, Two months alone, take it slowly You’re grown up, enjoy the days, There’s so much for you to go through Keep your friends, hold them close, These bonds will never vanish Look around, with you’re brothers together

Summers over and its time for me to go back to school Let me stay, just one more day, already miss it here Don’t know if I can wait that long, how the summers come and gone Oh, Avoda, the mark you’ve left, on me Made an Avodian out of me Blue and White I truly bleed You stole my heart, and that’s just where you’ll stay

All the times that I cried, with thoughts of Camp inside, It’s hard, but I know that you’ll get through it All the stories that you’ll hold, draw to one place we both know Though its your day, you know, that some day you’ll go away But camp, camp is here to stay

BLUE ANARCHY ALMA MATER To the Tune of “Say You Won’t Let Go” by James Arthur

I’ve waited all year long For these 8 weeks Always the night before I get no sleep But then the morning comes I jump to my feet And I cannot explain The feeling in me Then we pulled down that dirt road And for a second it felt like time froze I knew that I was back at home And I know this summer is different I’ve waited all 8 years for it I don’t wanna ever have to go It’s like nothing else here nobody knows Leading as one this year Never been so close I used to be so young Never thought I’d be Sitting here on the porch Looking out from bunk 14

CHORUS Just please let time go slow Because I can’t bear to go I knew I loved it here but I didn’t know How it would make me feel when I finally have to go All of my friends and I We Reminisce Thinking of all the things That were gonna have to miss Then we pulled off of that dirt road and for a second it felt like time froze And I wish that I could just stay I know I’ll remember forever What it was like when we were together But I know that it is time to go Embracing my new role who would’ve known? camp always stays the same even as I’m getting old Finding my voice this year How much we’ve grown

I know less of us here This place is still our home CHORUS Each time I pull down that dirt road I know that i am back at home All of the memories And all my friends Will be a part of me From now until the end I knew I loved it here But I did not know How camp would make me feel And how the bonds would grow This place is everything In us it shows don’t want to leave you but now it is time to go CHORUS Camp will always be my home With you I never feel alone I wish that we would not grow old So that time could move more slow

BUNK 1 • SC • 2K1614 As always this summer at Camp Avoda has already been flying by. As the end of the summer comes to an end, I am sad it’s almost over. This has been one of the best summers I have had at Camp and the memories I’ve made will last forever. I want to thank everyone this summer for making it so special. • Bunk 1: Wow you guys were a very interesting group of kids. You are all great kids and I hope you had amazing summers. I hope you all come back every year and live out your Avoda journeys and hopefully you started to learn why Camp Avoda is so special. • Goodgame: We killed it this summer! It wasn’t always easy and there was always something going on in the bunk but we handled it well and I hope you had a great summer. Keep coming back as much as you can and I hope you have a great senior year. • 2k1614: We’re still 6 strong. This summer has been amazing. Summers wouldn’t be the same without you and I hope you all come back for as long as you can to make more memories with you all. Good luck to all of you at school next year and I hope to continue next year in Israel and into camp. • Zac: It was sad to hear that you weren’t coming back this year and we missed you but I hope to see you soon and hopefully next summer. • Avoda: I hope everyone comes back for as much as they can because this is truly the best place on Earth and I’ll see everyone in 10 months. BUNK 1 • JC • 2K1714 JUNIOR HOOPS COACH Coming into the summer I had some doubts, but this year really exceeded all of my expectations. Summer ‘19 was one to remember, and I can’t help but thank the campers, administrators, and staff who made this possible. • Bunk 1: We had our ups and downs this year, but you guys are slowly becoming great Avodians. Just know that one day you’ll look back and realize that the friends around you are something you will always have. They are truly irreplaceable. Cherish the moments you have here. • Ethan: You really put in the work this year. I honestly have never seen a counselor so patient with their campers, and I am so grateful that your were my co this summer. It’s easy to see why the campers love you so much. • Junior Hoops: All of you surprised me this year. Even though we fell short in the championship game, you guys were surprisingly good listeners and improved dramatically as basketball players. Keep balling! • S-Tiers: There may be only 4 or 5 of you, but hopefully you know who are. • S.W.A.T. Team: By far the most elite and well trained unit I have ever seen. With our supply, we will be hydrated for the rest of our lives. • Ryan Jacoby: Best camper of all time. • Harry D: How’s Grace? • Ethan: That’s two for flinching • Stelman: Next year I’ll bring my shark tooth necklace. • Leon: Sorry for breaking your stick ;) • JC’s: Over the course of the summer I felt like I grew closer with a lot of you. More than half of us are still here, and it’s only fitting that we are the “resilient” 2k1714. Don’t worry, in two years we’ll be running this joint. Avoda - I love you

I cannot believe my second year on staff is already coming to a close; it feels like just yesterday I was in Bunk 2 as a camper, not a counselor. Nonetheless, this summer has been nothing short of wonderful. • 2K16: It’s been great to spend another summer with all of you. We have such a strong core, and I’m glad we could get Ross back. Let’s get Zac back next year and continue to be the only ones awake past taps. • Bunk 2: Thank you for a great summer. Sure, there were a lot of ups and downs, but you all showed that you have great futures ahead of you at Avoda. I’ll admit that I was a little worried going into the summer with this age group, but all proved to be okay. I hope you will all be back next summer because it only gets better from here. • Curtis: Thanks for being a dope Co. I didn’t really want to be in the same bunk as you, because I wanted to be able to have the same day off and such, but we seemed to make it work. Can’t wait to spend another summer at camp with you next year. • Bennett: I can’t believe you’re going to be in Bunk 14 next summer. You have flourished at camp since you began in 2013, and I know you will continue to do so next year. I’ll miss you while I’m in LFK, and I’m expecting you to hold down the fort in the 203. • Blue Odyssey: Thank you for a great first time on staff. It was amazing to see our hard work unfold into my second ever Desert War shutout (Go Hounds!). • Zac: We missed you dearly, but I’m not fretting because I KNOW you will be back next summer.

What a summer it has been! My second year on staff was an amazing time, and, honestly, I have no clue where these past two months have gone. • 2k16: Like always, we made this summer even better than the previous. With our numbers, I feel like we get closer each year, too. Thanks for making this summer so memorable! I hope we all are able to do it again next summer. • Paul: I was so happy we were able to be co’s. Next year though, lets try to be on different sides, so we can get the same doffs. All that aside, I think we did a great job keeping the peace and order, along with keeping everybody happy. I can’t wait to see what next summer has to offer. • Ben: I am glad you had a great summer as a C.I.T.. Keep coming back, because things only get better. I am beyond excited to watch you grow on staff. • C.I.T’s: I am so excited for you all to join staff next summer! It was a great time working with you guys, and you will all make great staff members. • Ethan & Goodgame: It was a pleasure being your neighbor this summer. I knew, whatever went down in the cabin, we could handle it! • Bunk 2: Thank you for making this such an easy summer! You guys are the best. I truly look forward to seeing you guys rise in the Avoda ranks each summer. BUNK 4 • JC • 2K1714 My seventh year at Avoda was different from all the others. No longer was I able to participate in any of the sports or activities at camp, and while that may make it seem like this would have been one of the worst summers st camp for me, that idea couldn’t be any more wrong. This summer was definitely shorter than many of my summers at Avoda because of a summer program I was attending that only let me be at camp for a little more than the second half of the summer. Yet as soon as I arrived I felt like I was back home and where I was meant to be. Being able to work at Avoda this summer, a place I have called my summer home for seven years of my life, has been an absolute blast and I couldn’t have asked for a better time. From working on the waterfront to athletics to making the Desert War video and now the Color War video, everything I have done here has been a ton of fun and I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to come back this year. Shoutouts: • 2k1714: This summer has been a lot of fun so far. You guys have become some of my best friends and I couldn’t ask for a better group of guys to spend the summer with. • Kliggy: Thank you for being a great co counselor this summer. Dealing with bunk four hasn’t always been easy but we made it a good time. • Nate: This summer has been short but it’s a great time. When I found out you were one of my co counselors I was excited, and I couldn’t have been more right. Being able to chill with you most nights made the summer one to remember. • Bunk 4: We have been through a lot this summer, but overall you a great group of kids with great futures at camp avoda. This is the best way to spend my summers and it’s crazy to think I’m rising on staff now. Avoda has molded me into the person I am today and that’s why it will always be a special place. The traditions at this place are incomparable. • 2K1614: Let’s continue to represent the Avoda spirit. It’s a small group now but nothing has changed except us growing closer. Keep killing it because this summer has been a blast. The chirps will continue to roll and I love you guys like family. • Nate: Once a schemer always a schemer. It has been sweet having you as a CO and this summer marks 1 more in our illustrious history of crazy bunk memories starting in bunk 4. It’s been great growing closer this summer and it only scraps the surface for more times ahead. • Danny: I know we can always pick up where we left off. The cabin this summer has been unbeatable. I’ll always have the Voodoo against you. • Bunk 5a + 5b: : You are a great age group to be with and its always a blast spending time with you. Wow, can’t believe I’m already writing my staff profile. It feels like yesterday was the first day of pre camp and now my 10th summer is about to finish up. It’s crazy how a whole decade has already gone by and all I can say is that coming here has been the best decision of my life. Coming back this summer for another year on staff was one of the best decisions I made that I will never regret. And now for some shoutouts 2k16- Boys, really thought we’d be up to 7 this year with the addition of Ross but rip Zac’s ACL. At the end of the day, we really carried staff and were always down to have a good time whenever. I hope we can all be back next summer as we’ve reached the point where our Avoda careers are winding down.

Writing this profile is always sad, but I can confidently look back on summer 2019 and say this was one of the best summers I’ve spent here at Avoda. I want to say thank you to everyone who made these two months so special and memorable. Now for some shoutouts… • 2k16: I’m hype we stayed at six this summer but it was a bummer we couldn’t make it 7… we were so close. I love that we can all be together at the same time and there’s no group I’d rather be with than you five. We better all be back next summer (plus one or two would be nice) and we definitely have more good times ahead of us. • Sam: I was psyched when I found out you were gonna be my co for this summer. Already as a jc you might have been the best counselor on staff. All around you made my life as a counselor much easier, whether that be putting the kids to bed, getting food for the bunk, or doing bunk clean up. I hope you come back for many more summers and I know you will continue to lead staff. • Bunk 5B: For the second summer in a row I requested this age group and for the second summer in a row my request was honored. Our bunk was absolutely stacked and you guys made my job very easy. This is the best group of campers in camp and I hope you guys stay that way. If I’m not with you guys next summer I hope we can stay friends. • Nate: Fourth period was fun. • Ross: You can’t take me one on one. • Paul: Hopefully we’re finally on the same color war team. • Ethan and Curtis: Why do you always knock? • Zac: Come back. • CITs: I’m excited for you guys to be on staff next year. I have to say that my campers were really well behaved this summer and we had little to no issues in the bunk. I feel much closer with all of these campers in my bunk and I hope they can look to me in the future if they need anything. • 2k1714: I was a part of the 2017 bunk 14 and I feel like my brothers and I have become much closer since that time. The people I hang out with now are not the same kid I hung out with as a camper but as time goes on you meet your real friends. • Bunk 5b: This was my first summer being a counselor and I could not have asked for a better group of kids to spend my first year with. Every day was something different and we always had fun. I am happy to say we were also the cleanest bunk in camp as we won kosher kabin. We did a lot of fun things this summer like seeing spider-man and getting a lot of food. • Danny: I remember the day I found out my co counselor was Danny. I was sitting with my volleyball team not even thinking about camp when I got the text in a group chat from Danny, Nate, and Ross saying we were all in cabin 5. As my first summer on staff winds down, I look back to everything that shaped my career as a camper. It is without question that my philosophy of camp has changed over the years. Throughout my years as a camper, I lived and breathed for Desert and Color War. The rest of the summer were merely build up days to these events for me. While these events are incredibly special and powerful, it’s the people and the memories that make Avoda unique. So take advantage of regular days, nights in the bunk, endless opportunities on the waterfront, and all the little things in between because time moves fast.

Another staff profile, another summer at Avoda. I still can’t believe I just finished my 12th summer at Avoda, it’s crazy to think this all started in bunk 1 way back in 2008. With every summer that passes by, I slowly start to realize that my summers here at Avoda are limited. I really hope I can come back next year, but if I don’t I’m happy to say that Avoda will always be my home. This summer was one of my best summers at Avoda, and I’m very happy with the way it’s ending. Being a second year SC was so much fun, and honestly as I’m sitting here trying to pick some of my summer highlights, but there’s too many to choose from! That’s what makes Avoda so amazing, and I think it’s the little things that keep people coming back year after year. There were a lot of new athletic campers at Avoda this year, and I’m very excited about the direction camps heading in. Now time for some shout outs. • Winn and Scribner - you guys were awesome Co’s this summer. You guys are a great addition to staff, and I see a lot of bright things in your Avoda future. Just make sure you keep coming back! • Bunk 6A - honestly you guys were just okay, nothing special...JUST KIDDING! You guys were awesome and I’m so happy to say that I was your bunk counselor. I hope you guys have a great off season, and stay classy. • 2k1514 - this is probably the end for most of us, so I just wanted to say that over the past 11 years we’ve grown to not only become friends, but brothers as well. No matter where we all end up down the road, we’ll all be connected through Avoda. I love you boyz. • Kliggy, Will, Brett - Can’t wait for this year at Umass. Avoda takes the Zoo! • Blue Odyssey - Let’s go boys!!! Only the second Desert War shutout in Avoda history!!! I’m so proud of our team, and winning Desert War this year was by far one of my favorite Avoda memories. • White Jaguars - I don’t know how this week will go, but I’m very confident we’ll win. No matter what happens, I’m glad I got to spend my last week of camp with you guys. Avoda - I will always be in debt to you. I love you

The change from being a camper/CIT to being on staff just feels right after all these years. The summer had a few bumps and bruises, but it was nothing that some sleep and good friends couldn’t fix right up. • 2K17- We’ve had a great run as JC’s and well keep going strong for the next couple years as senior staff. We got a big school year coming up and we’ll all pull through as fast as we can just so we can get back here next summer. • Artie and Scrib-You guys made this summer great for everyone in the cabin. I’ll miss having you guys around once we leave for the off season. • Bunk 6a-Thanks for making my first summer as a staff member memorable. You guys were a joy to have around. From the endless entertainment of you guys joking around with each other to just the quiet nights when everyone would just head to sleep early to get a great start on the next day. I however won’t miss waking up at 6 am to laughter and tetherball, we all need our sleep. • Peljo-Thanks for hanging around with me all summer. From first and second period ropes to canoe/kayak club you always put up with my weird antics and quirks. Also, the morning Dunkin runs saved me on those days. • Mich-Thanks for tossing around a frisbee whenever we see each other on the field. And for being a massive help learning all the random stuff on the waterfront. • Colby-We never really talked until this year, I kind of wish we had. From living in the same cabin to spending off periods on the water, we’ve really gotten to know each other this summer.

BUNK 6B • JC • 2K1714 This is my 8th summer being at camp Avoda, and although I am only a J.C. My time here has felt long and will be remembered by myself for a long time. Summers have flown by but leaving is never easy, packing the day before you go and thinking about all the fun times that were shared with your brothers and the connections that were made with the campers gets you to think about what it would be like without Avoda. Thinking of this helped me come to the realization that without Avoda there would be no other place where kids can roam around free without parents, wake up at 7 a.m. and get a basketball game going by 7:10, it’s just that amazing and truly is the best place in the world. • 2k1714- my brothers forever, almost all my memories have been made at Avoda alongside all of you and could not have asked for a more mixed and fun group of people. • Campers- This summer of course was made more fun by all of the different characters in camp, something I’ll remember as a counselor are the dance party’s that my whole bunk would have. During, Gabe would come over and dance in the middle of the circle of kids and do some sort of crazy dance. • Stelly and Colby- greatest co’s in history, 3 people made everything so easy. Having someone in my fourteen made being a counselor much easier and made it feel somewhat like being a camper again. Colby is just for the boys and lives in Needham which allowed us to connect. This summer was one for the books. To the greatest group of counselors ever. What seemed to be an eternity ahead of ubiquitous opportunities to see my best friends, interact with my campers, and partake in the Avoda community, has nimbled down to merely a few regular days, and the war. Over the past 3 years—going from camper, to CIT, to counselor—my perspective, role, and day-to-day life at this place have all undergone a wild evolution. It was only two summers back when the 2k17 Bunk 14 was holding down the highest cabin, leading the rest of the camp in one of the greatest summers of our lives. Then, as CITs, gaining some independence at the expense of a hard-working 2 months. Now, JC year is starting to wrap up, the Avodian deadline is nearly here, and color war is filling everyone’s minds. Becoming a counselor comes with responsibilities to lead your bunk and all of Camp. Though, as always, this summer and joining Camp Avoda staff with the rest of my 14 Brothers has truly been amazing.

Even through all this change, my devotion and admiration for this Camp stay as true constants that I hope will continue for years to come, and beyond. Even after 9 straight summers, I still had the same unmistakable feeling deep down when I turned on to Gibbs Road for the first time at the beginning of the summer. The White Royals put it, “Driving down old Gibbs Road, waiting to see that sign, brings a smile to my face, even for one last time.” That feeling is unique to Camp, and I hope I can still experience it for years to come. This summer, just like all the ones before, has come to pass quicker than desired. Sometimes at Camp, you fall into a routine, letting time pass until the next big show, whether it be Desert War, the Avoda Tournament, or Color War. This routine is enjoyable, yet it can cause you to lose focus on Camp, and the little time that you have left in the summer. It’s hard to appreciate every single regular day and period, but without doing so, Camp starts to slip away. Shoutouts: 2k1714: It’s unbelievable that 12/19 of us were back for JC year. There are so many factors that make Camp what it is, but the people are number one. You guys are the reason that each summer is even better than the last, and why each future summer will get better. Couldn’t ask for a stronger and closer group of friends some of which I’ve known since back in the 2008 bunk 1 and some I grew up with in Sharon. You guys are my boys forever and I hope to spend many more summer with you all. Ty

My guy, my best bud here at camp and back in Sharon. We killed it this summer and we are going kill it agains each other this year. PSU vs OSU!!! We get closer and closer everyday we spend together and lasting memories constantly are being created. You’re my boy and you always will be. Artie Even though you are from New York and I only see you during the summer I feel like I’ve known you forever. We started in bunk 1 together back in 08’ and our strange friendship had grown and grown. I hope to keep seeing you for as many summers as possible. Ahhrrtie Max Max, out friendships only started really two summer ago in 14, and since than we have become best of friends. We will always be Blue Apes together, ill see you soon max. Jay and Will You guys are my brothers and are two of the funniest kids I’ve ever meet. There has never been a dull moment between us, and I hope to keep making lasting memories and lasting laughs with you guys in the future. Shay You have been a great inspiration this summer and really helped me be prepared for things like CW and DW. 08’ bunk 1 forever. Bunk 10 Wow! What a crazy group of kids. I’ve never meet kids as energetic and hilarious as you guys. Our bunk was wild and a blast. This summer has been a great experience as I got to see you all grow up and make so many amazing memories. To my Co counselors Paul and Lefty we know what’s up and we killed it. Theo You my boy, you my big T. I had a great summer with you talking about our campers and who is out and who is in at night. Have a good senior year my son.

BUNK 10 • JC • 2K1714 HEAD OF SHOULDERS This summer has been a tremendous one. It’s my ninth summer at camp but only my first on staff. It has been the most unique summer at camp so far for that reason. I deepened my appreciation for this place and the fun it brings every summer. In addition, I learned what being a part of staff is like, and it is an enjoyable time. I got closer with so many people at camp this year, strengthening my love for this place. I’m eager to see what else Avoda has to offer in the future. • 2k1714: Camp wouldn’t be the same without you guys. It has been quite the summer with us on staff now and I’ve gotten so much closer with those of us left. I feel like every year at camp has gotten better with you all. You are the primary reason I’ve come back all these years and why I’ll find myself here in years to come. We have had some great times at camp and I know more are to come. • Stiggy: Thanks for being. a great co this summer. • Bunk 10: You all are some unique individuals and together make a great bunk. You guys got along well even though the bunk was rowdy at times. It was a great learning experience for me being your counselor. I look forward to seeing you guys come back next year to have another great summer at Camp Avoda. • Avodian Staff: You guys were work horses putting together this 2019 Avodian. Your dedication to making this book, documenting another summer at Avoda, has not gone unnoticed. It is going to be the best in history! Shoulders… rolo volo… gloooo… LS … raft wars…

Another summer at camp has come and gone, and this one did not disappoint. Whether we were playing volleyball as a bunk or learning how to waterski, the fun never seemed to end. I made sure that I did everything I could to make this summer awesome for my campers. I want to thank all of staff for making this such a fun summer for me, and I will make sure to keep coming back to this place for as long as I can, because I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my summer. Bunk 11I have watched your age group grow up over the years, and I was glad that I got to be your counselor once again. You guys were awesome and fun, and I can’t wait to see how you continue to grow into the best Avodians you can be. You have all been great campers and I have learned more from you than I could ever have imagined. You will be great leaders next year in bunk 14, and I can’t wait to see just how special you continue to make this place in the coming summers. 2K1514You guys are my brothers and we were killing it all summer. Our numbers this year just go to show that the 2k15 bunk 14 isn’t going anywhere. Our time has come to run camp, and we will continue to make our mark on this incredible place. RomanowYou were a great co-counselor and we locked it down in the bunk this summer. We got to watch as our cabin became one united age group, and I know we played a large part in bringing everyone together. Thank you for helping to make this summer such an amazing one, for both me and the campers. Tennis TeamI want to thank each and every one of you who played on the team this summer. We were able to kill it in both tournaments, which truly says something about our resiliency as both athletes and Avodians. This summer just goes to show that no matter who we play and no matter what happens out on the courts we are the better team, and we will continue to prove it during tournaments. The tennis team is about to go on a winning streak and you all should be incredibly proud and honored to be a part of it. DavidWe have been together for the last 10 summers, and I feel that nothing brings people together in the way that Avoda does. From cruising Lake Tispaquin to letting me dunk on you in basketball, the good times just keep on coming. No matter what future summers may have in store for us I know that this friendship is one that will last a lifetime, and I want to thank you for helping to make my camp experience such an incredible one. ColbyWelcome home! I knew that for the past few summers you had been thinking of coming back to camp, but nothing could describe just how surprised I was to actually see you in camp on that first day of precamp. It has been awesome being back at this place with you, and I hope I was able to help you become the counselor you are today. Thank you for being such a great friend throughout the years, and let’s continue to savor the moment and make each and every day the best one we’ve ever had.

Ten years ago I came to Avoda for the very first time, and with each new summer I grow more in love with my summer home. In wrapping up my tenth summer I more than ever am appreciative for the way camp has made me the man I am today. Throughout my time here I’ve matured, become a better athlete, made lifelong friends, learned how to be independent, and so much more. It is safe to say that without Avoda I would be a completely different person.

Bunk 12: Going into this summer there was only one group of kids that I wanted to be a counselor for, and thankfully I was able to do it. You guys were a great group of kids all summer and definitely made my job easier. If you guys continue to be the leaders you already are and continue to become closer as an age group, I know you’ll be an incredible 14 next year. Harry and Ethan: You guys are idiots, but you’re my idiots. Keep being tough guys. 2k15 14: We already knew this was going to be a summer for the books and it didn’t disappoint in the slightest. Being in Israel for 10 days was the perfect start and there’s no doubt we carried the momentum into camp. We ran it this year in the big dances, pre-camp, and any other aspect you could think of. I know we’re all gonna kill it this next week too. Hope to see you guys during the school year, whether it’s at UMASS or some random location. The Red Sox trip was a day I’ll never forget. Artie: Can’t believe we’ve still never been on the same CW team, but good luck this week. Hopefully I’ll be making a trip up to UMASS this year. Yankees suck. Curtis: Welcome to Temple Cadillac. Can’t wait to bool all over Philly this year. White Rhinos: Had a lot of fun planning for the day with you guys. Even though it didn’t end the way we wanted to, it was a great experience. Blue Anarchy: I am beyond excited for the week to get here because this squad is unreal. We just gotta keep up the good work and I know we’ll be celebrating at the end. We’re gonna be SCARY. Avoda: I don’t know what the future holds, but no matter what I will always love you. Thanks for a great 10 years.

CITs I appreciate you guys bringing me in last summer as one of your own. These past two summers have been two of my favorite summers mainly due to the relationships we’ve developed. Even thought I won’t be back next summer, I can’t wait to see how you develop as staff members and lead the camp in the future years. Much Love. 2k1414 I know it wasn’t ideal how some of us ended our tenure at a place we all consider home. However, I couldn’t be more thankful for my best friends that I have made over the past 13. I know you all have my back, and I will always have yours. Weekend Edry Love having you here on the weekends and beating you in 2k and Chel. Let’s set up shop in Boston at some point when we’re in the real world, twin soon? Shay It has been awesome these past summer running staff with you. The GOAT house has been the move this summer and for our last one, I wouldn’t want it anyway. From bunk 1 ‘07 to Goat house 2019, I wouldn’t change a thing. Let’s ride out on top and cap our summer just like last year. Blue Anarchy Let’s keep grinding and give these kids one for the books. I know we’ve been working hard and now it’s time to pay off. During this past offseason a lot of my time was spent scheming with my bunk 14 attempting to get as many of us back as possible. Unfortunately my efforts fell somewhat short as we only got 3 of us back full time and 2 back on weekends. With the fewest 2k1414 members at camp since 2006 I knew Abe and I had to represent. At first the summer was weird for without the guys beside me that i’ve had here for over a decade. But as the summer continued, I’ve grown a lot closer with guys in other age groups and I can say with absolute certainty that there is no where else I would rather be. Shout Outs • Abe: It was me and you from the start. And I mean Bunk 1 ‘07 all the way to livin in the GOAT.
