DEDICATION Bunk 14s come and Bunk 14s go. Usually a handful from each 14 remain for at least a few summers on staff. But before too long the last members bid “au revoir” to Avoda and that 14 ceases to be a presence at camp. Rarely, however do more than one member of any given 14 remain for over six summers on staff or become administrators. Camp Avoda has been lucky to retain three members of one such 14 for eight summers (and counting?) providing a consistent presence, unmatched experience, and familiar faces for a generation of Avodians. We at Camp Avoda would like to dedicate this Avodian to three staff members who’ve dedicated so much time to camp: Josh Cohen, Miklós Greenberg, Louis Douglas 2008 Bunk 14 A native of Boca Raton, FL, Josh “Joco” Cohen discovered Avoda (or vice versa) in 2005 and has made 23 Gibbs Rd his most consistent home for 13 summers. No matter where his travels take him, Joco always prioritizes a
return to camp to do his part to make each summer the best. He has provides leadership as Camp Rabbi since CIT year, has coached Jr and Sr Hoops, has been a counselor in Bunk 1 and Bunk 14, and has been a Color War staff member five times where he’s contributed several songs to the Color War songbook that will stay in the hearts and on the lips of campers for years to come. This summer he transitioned to administration, helping to run the Avoda program from behind the scenes, but remains a vocal leader on the field as well. Miklós “Charleberg” Greenberg has spent 15 summers on the shores of Tispaquin. He is a great example of how true Avodians are not necessarily star athletes. Miklós may have never been a top pick in Color War, but he brings a unique talent and skillset to the table that has proved indispensable over the years. One of Avoda’s longest running Waterfront Directors, Miklós has been keeping our shores clean, safe, and in tip-top shape day in and day out for years.
Nobody knows the Waterfront in such detail like him. And whenever there is a difficult task anywhere around camp, everyone knows that Miklós is the man to call. Not only will he get the job done, but will do so efficiently and with the highest quality results. This year he continues to direct the Waterfront and contribute expertise in various facets of camp life. Louis “Bubba Deuce” Douglas started coming to Camp Avoda in 2003, staying for two months every year as a camper. That combined with eight years on staff and several summers spent providing early pre-pre-camp set up and post-camp cleanup mean that Deuce has spent more time at camp over the course of his 15 summers than just about anybody else here today. His passion for a strong athletics program has led him to assume the responsibilities of Athletic Director for over six summers, and his commitment to providing the best possible experience for the campers is the reason why every one of his eight summers on staff has been spent as a bunk counselor. A two-time bunk 14 counselor and two-time Color War General, nobody at Camp Avoda takes there role as a counselor and mentor more seriously than Deuce. He has set the standard for putting in the work to produce Avodians that are passionate leaders. It’s hard to imagine a summer without the ’08 14. Joco, Miklos, and Deuce, thank you for your years of commitment and for keeping Avoda’s spirit, legacy, and traditions alive and well. This Avodian is dedicated to you!

Executive Director’ s Message We can beat them, just for one day We can be heroes, just for one day -David Bowie I am inspired each day at Camp Avoda. Every camper, counselor, and CIT has his own story line.We are all our own main characters. And more often than not, we are stars of our own story lines. For some people “small” challenges can seem like big victories. For some campers, simply being away from home is a challenge. What a great place to practice that skill!? And I get to see how proud campers are when they complete their stays at Avoda. For some people there are larger challenges at hand. Maybe they are trying a new elective or walking 45 feet above the ground on our ropes course. Or maybe they elect to climb Mt. Monadnock on our choice trip. Or maybe their Color War team needs just one more camper to swim in the swim meet. Someone takes a chance and places! We are certainly heroes. I am grateful to all the many people that make our excellent organization run. Campers, parents, CIT’s, staff, fellow administrators, health, kitchen, arts, maintenance, business partners, board members, alumni board members, and alumni. And a special thank you to Jill – for all your help and hard work at camp and for “giving up” much of our summer. At Avoda we preach team work. We provide rich team experiences for the boys on many levels. But we ourselves are a highly effective team. We compete against many other wonderful camps – but we aim to be the best. I thank everyone for your partnership and tireless work to make Avoda #1.
Our teamwork this summer has yielded the Summer of 2017 – one of our finest - with no shortage of fun and special moments. We challenged our boys at Tree Top Adventures. We invented New Zooball. We won not one but TWO tennis tournaments. Battle of the Super Teams. We held a bar mitzvah! We brought back Mud Wrestling. We watched Adam Fogel hit a home run over the Rec Hall that will be etched in my mind for some time, during a game against Bauercrest. It doesn’t get any better. He was our hero that day. And who could forget maybe the “Best 15 Minutes of Desert War” ever? This year’s edition of Desert War was amazing. Both teams gave their all. In all my 21 years at Avoda this had to be one of THE BEST events I have ever seen. That last 20 minutes will go down in our Archives as some of the best action at Avoda on the Shores of Tispaquin. This day was a clear reminder of why I am proud to be a part of this organization. I am not sure we are able to articulate the emotion and spirit in our marketing materials – but there were so many pluses and foundations that the boys are creating and building on during their time at Avoda. Passion. Effort. Teamwork. Sporstmanship. Support. Pride. Hustle. I know losing doesn’t feel good but both sides should hold their heads up high and be proud of the young men they are and are becoming. I am happy that we contribute to the boys’ make-up as they grow up. Second session had and Opening Night Dinner Sing-a-long that reminded me how awesome the Avoda spirit is. We endured what
felt like the coldest July Nights on record. We celebrated Israel Day – obstacle course, played Kadima, and pita bread under the leadership of our excellent Israeli counselors. We had an emotional 11,12,14 Dead Zone. And only a camp person can understand the priorities at camp. Pride is high on the list. Respect is on the list. Passion remains high. It our world here and our community. Our slice of the pie – and people shine here and have a place and role. We welcomed our grandparents for GP Day. And on a victorious Tournament day – cheered for our teams as Sr Hoops won it all and Sr. Soccer shut out each opponent for another championship. We won the Pembroke Swim Meet as well. Every game and event certainly had its heroes: large and small. Doing the small stuff counts too! Color War has not begun yet, as of the writing of this article, but I have no doubt we will have campers, CIT’s and staff shine, contribute and step up. Avoda promotes leadership, effort, and courage. I applaud all our campers and staff for authoring the best stories of themselves that they can while at camp. Each main character is a hero in some capacity each day through our varied challenges, games, experiences, independence, leadership, and relationships. Go Avoda! -Ken
Ronni Guttin Director’ s Message
Photographs and Memories. The title of a very old song by Jim Croce. Funny, I am not very sentimental about most things, but this one just makes me think about camp. Some of the photographs in my head are: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

And spelling Bees Jumps in the Lake Nightly Talent Shows in bunk 3 Friday Night discussions Winning the Avoda tournament
I could continue, but you probably have a mental photograph of the wonderful summer that is THE summer of 2017. My photographs are magical…they have depth and movement and are made up of all of the interactions and reactions of campers and staff throughout the summer. My photographs are colorful…green grass, assorted League shirts, sailboats on Lake Tispaquin, smiling faces, and freshly made beds with special blankets. My photographs are imprinted in my memory. My photographs have voices: children’s voices as they call out to one another, counselor’s voices as they call out encouragement on the field, the nurse’s voices as they allay the fears of worried campers, and the voices of my colleagues
as they laugh with me, offer help, pitch in to “take care of business”, and work together to create new photographs that I am sure are in all of our minds. The summer of 2017 is in my mind…can’t forget.. Can’t forget what happened yesterday Though my friends say don’t look back I can feel it coming through me Like an echo. Gary Rabinowitz Assistant Director’ s Message
Thank you for letting me stay here Thank you for taking me in Ani DiFranco
Gratitude is defined as ready to show appreciation for and to return kindness. As we navigate the human condition, we make every effort to not only recognize the gifts present in our world, be thankful for them and to teach the next generation the art of being appreciative. There is an overwhelming plethora of websites and blogs dedicated to how gratitude directly impacts overall happiness. Most of us probably have good days and bad days when it comes to being thankful and certainly as we age, we gain a more thorough understanding of the moment. Since rejoining the Avoda family a few years ago, I have understood the special culture that resonates from 23 Gibbs Road. The concoction of people, atmosphere, tradition, connections and pure aesthetic beauty impacts everyone who spends time here. This year, my role changed and I was only able to be at camp intermittently. My gratitude took on new meaning. Is it age? Perhaps. Is it perspective? Always. Is it a deeper understanding? Most
definitely. The purity of Avoda has been on full display throughout the summer of 2017 and everything seems a bit sharper and more crystallized. It would be impossible to capture all the magic that Avoda exuded this summer but here a few that I am eternally grateful for. • The bumpy ride down Gibbs. (OK, maybe I would be just as appreciative if slalom wasn’t required) • The Camp Avoda sign in the parking lot that lets us know we are home. • The immense aroma of the Avoda pines that greets us when we exit our cars. • The pine needles that shroud the wooded landscape. • The 3 full moons every summer that hang over Tispaquin as if it is suspended there just for us. • The sun soaked athletic field on a warm summer day. • The roots that no matter how many times I walk among them, always seem to have me trip over them. I could go on an elongated diatribe about the beauty of Avoda but as we know, in any community, it’s the people that make a family shine and Avoda is without a doubt blessed with the salt of the earth. I am genuinely touched every day by….
• The caring and thoroughness of our health staff. • The creativity, flexibility and excellence of the best kitchen staff in the league. • The keen eye of Abe the camp photographer. • The purity, diversity and energy of our absolutely amazing campers. • The growth, effort, dedication and love that our staff brings to the table every day. • The high quality work and impact of Joco and Miklos, you guys killed it this year. • The love, consideration, empathy, astuteness, attention to detail, and diligence of the dream team. Ken, Ronni, and Leon, I can think of no other humans on the planet that I would rather work with, spend time with and become family with. Thank you!

Avodian Staff
The 2017 Avodian Staff was one of the best staffs ever seen at Camp Avoda. The staff was lead by the sensational Leon Dyer and his understudies Jake Eagle and Alex Frank. The staff was completed by Bunk 14 editors Zach Breton, Nate Goldberg, Max Scribner, Theo Knopf and Max Kleinmann. The 2017 Avodian Staff had a phenomenal summer and graciously achieved every task that they were assigned. Avodian Staff worked very hard this summer to produce this Avodian!

BUNK 14 OVERNIGHT
The 2017 Bunk 14 overnight was one to remember. This years trip started with a bang where the campers walked along the boardwalk, ate lunch, and shopped in stores at Hampton Beach. The Bunk continued northbound and resided at a campground on a beautiful lake. The next morning, the campers woke up, eager to learn what the activities were for the day. Counselors Louis Douglas, Drew Lukoff, and Jake Eagle gathered the campers and announced that the Bunk would be going white water rafting near a local river. The thrilled campers where then shuttled to the start of the river. Bunk 14 was separated into three rafts. The first raft was led by
36
Thor, the second Waldo, and the third Seth. Five minutes into the rapids, Senior Counselor Drew Lukoff is sent off the raft by a colossal wave, taking camper Evan Gray with him. Later on the ride, Nate Goldberg is taken off the raft, not from a wave, but a horsefly on his life jacket. Bunk 14 and their counselors stopped along the river for a tasty lunch of baked beans and steak. Once everyone was finished, the counselors brought the campers back to the campground. Josh Cohen (a.k.a. Joco), strummed the guitar as the Bunk sung previous color war almas and campfire songs. The next morning, it was time to leave. Everyone
packed their belongings and set off in the fans. However, the trip was not finished. The counselors unexpectedly stopped at K1 GoKart Racing. Ethan Levy destroyed the competition, beating the second fast time by over four seconds. After everyone raced, the campers went to the Stockyard Grill, where they balled out, ordering the best steaks and the finest appetizers on the menu. After they were full, they were taken to see the new Planet of the Apes movie, which turned out to be really good. Bunk 14 then returned to their home after a more than successful overnight.

The Canoe Trip is a overnight that many senior campers look forward to all year. This overnight is special because the campers get to go far away from camp to experience canoeing on big rivers. This year the campers went canoeing on the Delaware river in Barryville, New York. The campers arrived late afternoon and began to start a BBQ. After feasting on burgers and hotdogs everyone settled down and went to bed in anticipation for a long day of canoeing and paintball. The canoers woke up early and set off
on a seven mile journey through rapids and many obstacles. Jacob Winn and Jason Stelman finished first followed by Zach Breton and Zack Volinsky. Eventually everyone finished the seven mile trek and sat down to eat lunch. After lunch, Avoda campers headed back to the campsite to get ready for an epic paintball battle. The paintball battle was highlighted by Nate Goldberg viciously shooting teammate Jake Rosken in the face. After the eventful paintball match, the campers got dressed and went out to a quality Italian feast at
Ill Castello. The campers lumbered out of the restaurant to head back to the campsite to get a good night’s sleep before a day out on the road to head back to camp. After a brief shower and unpacking period, the campers headed out to a dinner at smokey bones where campers grubbed on a huge BBQ meal with meats such as sausage, ribs, chicken and steak. This meal marked the end of the fabulous 2017 canoe trip that the campers are sure to not forget.

Benji Satloff, Josh Cohen, Wes Fixler
When one walks to the chapel site at ol’ Camp Avoda, that person will see something very unique and special. While some outsiders may just see services as a waste of time and come to dread it every week, for Avodians, services is a time to spiritualize and reflect on the past week. The services, which were led by Rabbi, and guru, Josh Cohen, and he was accompanied by fellow Rabbis; Wes Fixler, Benji Schwartz, and Dan Chafetz. The Rabbis not only led in prayer, but they also spiced up services by adding soothing music to the mix. The highlight of this year’s services was, without a doubt, the Bar
56
Mitzvah of Jacob Wise. As he became a man, Jacob showed off his torah reading skills, which hinted at signs of a future Avoda Rabbi career. Overall, this year had the most engaging and entertaining services ever.
INFIRMARY INFIRMARY STAFF
Kenny Vasques, Anne Welton, Jose Montanez The Camp Avoda nursing staff works very hard all summer to ensure that all campers are happy and healthy. The staff does everything from handing out ice pops to treating wounds. Summer 2017 was a rather successful summer. There were very few major injuries and no epidemics. The camp driver, Jose, was an integral part of the infirmary staff. He was on call 24/7 in case any camper needed to be rushed to the hospital. The Avodian Staff and the rest of camp would like to thank the nursing staff for their hardwork and dedication throughout the summer.

AVODA TOURNAMENT The day was July 31st, the Avoda tournament. The teams consisted of junior hoops, senior hoops and senior soccer. The camps that competed are bauercrest, YJ and bournedale. Avoda tournament is an annual event that occurs every second session at Camp avoda. It is up there with some of the best days of camp and if a team from avoda wins their portion of the tournament they get to jump in the lake which is a big deal and can only happen if you either win in the tournament desert war or color war. The senior hoops team had an unstoppable starting five with the four captain CITS and Zach Goodgame. The first game avoda beat bauercrest easy to start it up. Later that day we played YJ. Drew Litner had many minutes in the game and showed that small men can do it all. Avoda had a little break and a quick bite to eat followed by a game against bauercrest and the situation was as follows if avoda won we win the tournament and if we lost we played a second game. Senior hoops sadly lost the first game but came back in the second with vengeance knowing that this would be the first time senior hoops had won in three years. Going into the game Harrison Maron was pumped up by his brother David. While the rest of the team was shooting around. Going into the game we knew we had what it takes by sticking with what the coaches Drew Lukoff and Daniel Chafetz told us and at the end of the game with 3 minutes left they put in Max Kleinmann to take the final shot of the game. It was a great day for senior hoops who beat bauercrest and jumped in the lake. Shoutout to MVP’s Harrison maron and Zach goodgame and a congratulation to senior hoops for catching the dub. The senior soccer team also played well. The captains on senior soccer were Nate Goldberg, Nate Achildiev and Mitch Director. The first game avoda played in, against Bauercrest with a score of 3-0 with an easy win and stars of that game were Ben Schreiber and Artie. The next game Avoda played was against Bournedale with a 1-0 close game with the only goal from Zach Breton assisted by Max Scribner. YJ had to leave early so they were automatically eliminated putting Avoda v. Bauercrest in the championship. The game was won easily won thanks to the fellow Avodains cheering chants like A-V-O-D-A. Senior soccer won the whole tournament and the MVP’s on their team were Zach Breton and Adam Alter and a special thanks to the coach’s AJ Felberbaum, Alex Frank, Ryan Litner and Ben Shale.

OPENING DAY
72
JULY 4TH
The festivities of July 4th really began July 3rd, when, in the middle of the night, bunks 11 and 12 took to the field to make the traditional mud pit for wrestling. Bunk 14 also worked late through the late hours of the night, erecting the bonfire to wrap up the July 4th celebrations. The morning of July 4th began with a festive meal of french toast. After the meal, the campers and counselors went back to the bunk for bunk clean up. Shortly after bunk clean up, the campers gathered around the mud pit. They were all eager to see their fellow bunkmates and counselors battle in the ring. The greatly anticipated mud wrestling began with a match between bunk 1 and Ken Shiffman. When bunk 1 defeated Ken, they received the Avoda Wrestling Federation World
Championship Belt. After the conclusion of the wrestling matches, the campers then went to the mess hall for a savory lunch of tacos. The next activity for the campers was the Camp Avoda carnival which was highlighted by the dunk tank and the egg toss. The campers munched on traditional carnival food including, popcorn and cotton candy. After the carnival, there was an American barbeque. The barbeque included succulent BBQ chicken and juicy corn on the cob. Following dinner, the campers headed down to the beach for the annual bonfire. This year’s fire was named “The Resilience” to commemorate the ups and downs of bunk 14. To kick off the bonfire, the camp was blessed by an appearance from the legendary former director,
Paul G. Davis, who told the scary tale of “Witches Cove”. Next, a member from every bunk stood in front of the whole camp and spoke about what they love about camp. After the speaker is finished, he throws a wood chip into the bonfire. This tradition is known as the Chip Ceremony at Avoda. Once each bunk’s representative spoke, the mighty bunk 14 gathered in front of the camp and shared their stories and/or feelings about camp. After bunk 14 finished their speeches, counselors and alumni shared their memories about camp. For the grand finale, once the speeches were finished, Lake Tispaquin was lit up by a multitude of vibrant and colorful fireworks.
73
FLAGRUSH
74
After a exquisite barbeque dinner in the grove, the campers anxiously waited for the evening activity. At lineup, when the camps evening activity director Shay Wenglin announced that it was going to be flagrush, the camp jittered with excitement. The teams were announced and the captains were Nate Goldberg and Caden Puccio for white, and Sam Waltzman and Max Scribner for blue. The starting siren sounded for the Freshman/Sophomore portion of the activity and the field erupted with chaos. Flag, af-
ter flag, after flag, was scored by both teams. The highlight of the first quarter was when Matthew Steindecker obliterated Abe Watman’s ankles when he cut back as he strolled across the line. Legend has it that the ankles of Abe are still broken. The all camp half started with a bang, as white captains Nate Goldberg and Caden Puccio both scored triples. Blue responded with lock down defense led by jail defensive captain, Tad Leavitt, and head captains, Maxwell Scribner and Sam Waltzman. As the game progressed, the white
team’s offense proved too much for the blue team. The blue team watched with anguish in their eyes, while the white team jumped up and down on second base chanting; “We’re number one”. Opening night flagrush lived up to it’s expectations. It kicked off the summer with intensity and plenty of fun. It satisfied returning campers who have been dying to play a classic game of Avoda flagrush throughout the off season, and gave new campers a taste of Avoda life.
ZOOBALL
During what was thought to be a regular Tuesday at Avoda, the campers went about their day as usual. All tides turned, however, when Zooball was announced as the evening activity. This was no longer a typical day, it was a Zooball day. The excitement could be felt throughout the Mess Hall, as campers pounded vigorously on the tables. After the teams had been announced, the campers went back to their bunks to get ready for the activity. Campers anxiously spilled out of their bunks and onto the field in hopes of victory. The horn blew, and the three balls were launched into the sky to start the match. Right off the bat, Tad Leavitt
scored a screaming dropkick from halffield. The entire camp watched with astonishment as he somersaulted in celebration. The first half came to a close with the teams tied. The second half began with an emphatic attack from the white team. With this boost, they started to pull away with the lead. As the game reached its final minutes, the blue team managed to mount a comeback and get back within striking distance of white. The game was so close that it was going to come down to penalty kicks. White was up by four points, but the blue team still had two penalty shots. The first shot for blue was a kick by Caden Puccio. The crowd was silent as he
stepped up to strike the ball. He scored and the blue team was now only down by two. In spite of only needing two points to tie the game, the blue team’s captain, Max Kleinmann, told Nate Goldberg to attempt a dropkick worth three points. Everybody but the referees pleaded with Nate to take a kick. Being the outstanding leader he is, he decided to take a risk and go through with the dropkick. Unfortunately for the blue team, Nate’s kick was deemed no good because he stepped in the crease while shooting. The white team had secured the victory. Although he did not win the game for blue, Nate Goldberg was awarded MVP of the game.

ZOO TRIP
On the first Thursday of second session, the campers got to chose where they wanted to go for a field trip from four options. One of the options was the zoo. The campers who chose zoo hopped in a van and headed out. The van had a smooth, easy going ride and arrived at Roger Williams Zoo feeling alert and energetic. The campers walked around the zoo and admired amazing mammals, reptiles and birds. The campers also enjoyed delicious food at the food court before continuing to explore the animal exhibits. The highlight of the zoo was the exhilarating snow leopard exhibit. At the exhibit, the campers learned that Snow Leopards can jump up to 50 feet! The zoo trip was a great experience that campers will not soon forget it.
TREE TOP ADVENTURES
AVODA FIELD TRIPS
The first field trip of the 2017 season for Camp Avoda was to Tree Top Adventures. Tree Top Adventures is a climbing and zip lining park located in the woods of Canton mass. Campers took a short bus ride to the park, and got suited up for the ensuing adventure through the woods. Campers and counselors scurried high into the treetops to enjoy challenging obstacles and exhilarating zip lines. After a few hours of hard work and fun, everyone enjoyed a much needed meal of pizza. Overall, all the campers agreed that they enjoyed the thrilling trails at Tree Top Adventures. They thought it provided an awesome experience for kids of all ages.

AVODA FIELD TRIPS This trip was titled the mystery trip. Just as it sounds, this trip was a mystery all the way up to the arrival of the bus at the Boston Harbor. The campers soon found out that they would be enjoying a thrilling ride on the famous speed boat “Codzilla”. But first, the campers enjoyed a delicious lunch of burgers, subs, and mac n cheese at the famous Faneuil Hall. After the intense boat ride the group went to seven eleven to get slurpees and snacks. Next, the squad traveled to a park in Boston and were graced with some water attractions while they played frisbee and football. A scenic photo was a highlight of the trip and the mystery trip ended up being an awesome time for the campers who chose to risk it all by signing up for the mystery trip.
MYSTERY TRIP
On the first Thursday subsequent to Desert War, Camp Avoda took an eagerly awaited trip to a Red Sox game. After bunk cleanup, the campers hopped on abus and made their way to the famous Fenway Park. It was a beautiful day for baseball and all the campers remembered to put on sunscreen. The campers enjoyed lunches including Fenway Franks and Tasty Burger sandwiches. The field trip was highlighted by Nate Goldberg and Tad Leavitt starting a “Let’s Go Red Sox” chant that broke out all around the stadium. The Red Sox lost in a tight game. In spite of the loss, the campers kept their spirits up and enjoyed the calm after the storm of Desert War.

As the first session at Camp Avoda for the summer of 2017 began to wind down, the anticipation for Desert War increased immensely. On the last Wednesday of the first month, the campers made their way to lineup in the morning. At line up, a heated argument erupted between Jose, a camp driver/nurse, and Deuce, a member of senior staff. In retaliation to an earlier comment made by Jose about Deuce’s haircut being “trendy”, Deuce instructed his bunk 14 minions to throw Jose into the lake. As Bunk 14 hustled over to Jose, Ken interrupted them by shouting, “Stop, what you’re doing!”. Bunk 14 responded to Ken by loudly belting out in unison; “IT’S DESERT WAR!” After the campers chanted in celebration for the start of Desert War, the teams were announced and both squads were divided along the legendary PGD path. The captains; Max Scribner and Sam Waltzman for the Blue team, against Caden Puccio and Nate Goldberg for the White team, were the first to walk down the path. The teams learned the rest of their respective staffs and their names: The Blue Thundering Herd versus The Great White Sharks. At the end of the pathwalks, both teams split up. The Great White Sharks went to the Rec Hall, while the Thundering Blue Herd made their way to the lodge. Both teams got amped up and discussed strategy for the
90
ensuing four quarters. As the chaos of the first quarter began, Noah Goldstein managed to break through the defense of the blue team, and scored the bunk 14 flag. His ability to finesse the blue team’s defense was due to some quick jukes and speed unmatched by any of the defenders. The rest of the quarter was highlighted by both team’s ability to lock down on the defensive ends. These defensive highlights included a tremendous tackle by none other than Theo Knopf as he laid out to stop a flag. The Great White Sharks went into the second quarter with all the momentum after a dominant performance in the first quarter. However, during the second quarter, Sawyer Busny was able to slip through the defense of the sharks to score the field flag for the blue team. It was a close game going into lunchtime. Both teams went to the mess hall and thought about the upcoming quarter. In addition to talking strategy, the teams enjoyed a feast of grilled cheese and tomato soup. After rest period, both teams returned to their headquarters for information on opening rushes and to once again get the juices flowing with some pump up music. The third quarter opened with skillful rushes from Zach Breton and Max Kleinmann for the Blue team, and Carson Raisner and Adam Alter for the White team. However, no one could manage to get a flag through either team’s elite
defense. At the end of the third quarter, both teams went back to their headquarters and attempted to figure out a way to penetrate the impregnable defenses. The final quarter began with a full force rush from the Sharks. They were stopped by the Herds impressive ability to pull socks. Both teams continued to swap failed rushes throughout the quarter. With five minutes left in the game, Joey Raymond, of the Blue team, was able to fly through White’s defense and score the field flag. The White team immediately responded with a field flag of their own scored by captain Caden Puccio. With only a few minutes remaining in Desert War, Adam Alter hajjed his way to the Dessi and was able to bring it to the field. After juking Blue’s first layer of defense, Alter performed a miraculous throw to Jesse lichtman, who executed an amazing catch to increase white’s lead. The frenzy of Sharks showed to be too much for the Thundering Herd to handle. White enjoyed a celebratory swim in the lake and a satisfying victory lap. The MVPs for the Blue team were Tyler Freedman, Sawyer Busny, and Joey Raymond. The MVPs for the White team were Jacob Winn, Sebastian Vidal, Aleix Marks, and Theo Knopf. Both teams put in maximum effort and Desert War 2017 ended up being a huge success.

guys took initiative and knew your roles.
Going into the summer I was pumped. Our squad from 2k1414 is deep.....really deep.... like we run it. Anyways, I was excited from the start. When I got to camp, I was faced with an interesting challenge; being a counselor in bunk 1. I had not expected to be in bunk 1 and was a little concerned with my ability to deal with the younger campers. So here is where I’ll start my shoutouts: Bunk 1: You guys were awesome this year. We had some ups and downs when it came to behavior (which was of course to be expected), but for the majority of the summer I think everyone was happy. S/o everyone who said they are coming back or extended you guys are going to make for some great Avodians. Senior Soccer: The Avoda tournament was unbelievable. No goals allowed through the entire tournament was an incredible accomplishment. You guys played your hearts out and fought hard every minute of play. Captains: You guys stepped up on the field and battled all day. During practice you
106 6
MVPs: Breton, I don’t know where those moves came from but you were cooking them. Our only goal vs Bourndale showed your true grit and dedication. Alter, we put you in a tough position at center back and right back and you shut it down. I know you wanted to go up but you still stuck it out and followed our lead. You were great in the Avoda tournament and DW (I wanted you to get an MVP there to). Noah Goldstein-you’re the goat. Shrieber-you played with a mentality that I’ve never seen you use. Stelman-heck of a job in goal. And the rest of senior soccer you guys killed it. 2k1414: I literally couldn’t think of a different group I’d want to spend my summer with. I can’t put it into words (especially while I write this play) how much you guys mean to me and I hope you all feel the same.We will be kickin it next summer and hopefully get our numbers up. Ian/Boolan/Udonis/Ilan and Shay/ Wayne/Stain: This summer was unreal. Side note: it really does get more fun the longer you stay. DW was sick. Getting to be with you guys helped me a lot. Joppy/Chaefetz/Edry: we booled heavy. That’s pretty much all that needs to be said...but I’ll continue.
Joppy, I’m gonna miss you during the last week of camp. We’ve grown closer through our years on staff and next year it’ll be even more. Chaefetz we stayed boolin during DW. You killed it as a 4 (shoulda been in CW but that’s something to discuss next year). Edry, uoeno we booled. Had mad fun this year with you. Back next year even better. Abe/Abu and Kirk/Bean/ Whitaker: I’m so amped for this week. Living with you guys is gonna be unreal I already know. Let’s get the dub and have a week. Velt: r.i.p. This summer of hanging with you I know you’ll be back next year so we gotta make up the lost time. The Great White Sharks: It wasn’t pretty but we grinder it out. That was one of the best Desert Wars I’ve ever been here for. Blue Wizards: this week is gonna be awesome. Was a little uneasy when I first heard the teams, but since our first meeting my hesistancies have gone away and my expectations have been exceeded. Hopefully the week continues on this course and we will be in the lake. Jcs: gotta show you guys some love. The Subaru was consistently occupied by at least a couple Jcs. I’m looking forward to hanging with you all next year.

After last year, I was 100% certain I was coming back to be a member of the Avoda staff. But, the off season was kind of tough for me because every month or two I would get a text or call hearing that yet another one of my brothers couldn’t come back or could only stay for a month. Yes that really stunk but there’s 2 things I learned about that. Even though your brothers might not come as long as you’d like, they will always be your best friends and nothing will ever change that. Also, all of Avoda is one big family so I might have lost some brothers this summer but I gained many more. 2k1514 Boys, it has been one hell of a summer, the best one yet and it’s only up from here on out. All of you better keep coming back as long as possible. Make sure you guys keep taking summer classes. I love you all, thank you for making this summer unreal. Bunk 1 To all of bunk 1, I wanted to thank you for being an amazing first bunk. I have learned more than I could have imagined from you guys whether it was how to be a good counselor or how to act as a little kid again. Come back as long as possible, you won’t regret it.
Frank Thank you for being a great co. You definitely showed me both sides of being on Camp Avoda staff which was much appreciated. Gink Gonk Kliggy Even though our kids definitely weren’t the easiest, we still made bunk 1 a great time especially when we combined the areas even though we could have started the fire alarm.. Thundering Herd Unfortunately some things didn’t pan out and we didn’t get the outcome we wanted, but I couldn’t be more proud of the work we put into the war and I would not change anything we did. Wes Thank you for taking me and trusting me in DW. I know it took some convincing but I hope looking back, you are happy with the decision made.
camp, I feel like we always stick together and for sure know how to kick it. Please keep coming back here because we all know Sharon cannot even compare with Avoda. Artie/Jay/Will You are all a bunch of clowns but I wouldn’t want anyone else bring the humor and sometimes stupidity into our 14. Blue Wizards As soon as the teams were finally made official, I knew we were gonna have a good chance. Over the last week, we have put in countless hours of hard work and I know it is going to pay when we’re running down the dock into Tispaquin.
Abe I think how we work together is unmatched from desert war to color war, and I believe it’s going to put us in a good place come CW. Let’s get this W! Jake/Brett Whether it’s in Sharon or at

Greg: Thanks cuz for being my mentor this summer and helping me adapt to what it is like on staff. Also thanks for giving me a ride every day off.
The summer of 2017 was definitely one that I will remember for a very long time. It was my first time as an Avodian experiencing what staff is like. This summer was one of the best summers of my life, and it makes me think about how lucky I am to be part of this place. 2K15: You guys are the best group of friends I could ever ask for. I wouldn’t want to spend my summers with anyone else. Although only 13 of us were back this year, we all still had an unforgettable summer. Hopefully we will all get accepted to NCCSU when we apply. I already cannot wait for next summer, when we’ll have more of 2K15 back. Bunk 1: The ship definitely did not sail very smooth at first but we soon became a really fun bunk. You guys were a really awesome first bunk to have and I’m psyched to see all of you back next summer. Frank and Ty: You guys were awesome CO’s and really helped make this summer great. Classes were a game changer this summer.

Bacdayan: I was pumped when I found out that you were coming back. 6th period was easily the best period of the day. Send it to 1 for class. Benji:You clearly had the edge in 1 v 1 this year. 11-2 was pretty bad I admit. We became good friends this summer and I can’t wait to see you in the offseason. Romanow: 1st month was definitely one that I’ll remember. It sucks that you had to sacrifice have of your summer. The Gauntlet will be back next summer. Will: You were by far the person who went to class the most, no doubt about it. Loved chilling with you all summer and I can’t wait to see you in the offseason. Being back on staff this summer was a blessing, I loved every minute of it. At first, I was skeptical about being a counselor in a freshman bunk, but I have loved being in bunk 2. It’s been a summer of ups and downs but being on staff this year is better than any of the bad that happened This profile is about me, but as I reflect on the summer, it was the staff and campers that made this summer one of the best my life so I would like to give a couple of shoutouts. First and foremost, my boys, the 2k1414: being back on staff with you guys this summer was a dream come true. Being able to spend 2 months at avoda with my best friends was what I had missed for the last few years. Deciding to come back was one of the best choices I have made. It will be our time to run camp soon and I think we are going to do one hell of a job, because when we put our minds to it I know we are some of the hardest working kids I know. Thanks for accepting me back to camp as a staff member this summer after my hiatus, I really can’t explain how thankful I am. Bunk 2: it was awesome being in the bunk this year. From having will Cooper as a counselor in the first month to having only 6
campers at the end of the year it’s been a blast. You guys are a great age group and will be a great 14 in the years to come, so keep coming back. Drew/Will: it was awesome being counselors with you guys. Both of you are hardworking people when you need to be and were great with the campers this summer. Late nights were fun in the bunk and i couldn’t have been happier with the co counselors I had this summer. You guys should continue to come back for as long as you can because camp needs more people like you guys.
and I know anyone on our staff is going to do the same. Let’s be in the lake at the end of the week boys, I can’t explain how psyched I am for the week to start.
Jake: it was awesome having you here second month. I missed being at camp with you and I was bummed at first that you were not coming back this summer. When I heard the news you were back i was ecstatic. You came into camp after a month off and immediately is was like you had never left. I am so thankful to have you in my life as my brother and appreciate all the amazing things you do for camp. Blue wizards: Thank you joco and Abe for giving me a chance and believing in me for color was this year. I was in 9 color wars as a camper and have never been in one as a counselor. I know I will do anything in my power to ensure victory for the wizards

P.S. Special shout out to the full summer crew, you 5 are awesome.
I am going to keep this short and sweet so maybe somebody will actually read it. After not being able to come back in 2016 I didn’t know if I wanted to return as a counselor for this summer. I ended up deciding to come back because I felt like I needed a summer on staff to complete my Avoda experience. Thank god I did because summer 2017 has been the best one yet. 2K1514 - I feel that as a 14 we have come a long way this summer. It was terrible not being able to be with you guys last summer and I am so grateful that I was able to rejoin you guys for a great summer of booling and being the best JCs ever. Hopefully even more of us will be back next summer and we can do it all over again. Bunk 2 - You guys were great this year. Your an amazing group of kids who are true Avodians. I couldn’t have asked for a better bunk and I hope you guys had as much fun as I did this summer. Keep coming back and stick together and I promise you will get to enjoy the full Avoda experience.

Kirk - We totally killed it this year, we definitely found the perfect balance of being great counselors and having a great time. Hope you had as great of a time as I did and thanks for being a great co. Good luck in CW. Will - Wish you could had been in our bunk for the whole summer. It was great having you around. I’m glad we were able to become good friends again this summer. Admin - Thanks for doing a great job this summer and helping us be the best counselors we can be. Zach -You were one of the biggest reasons I chose to come back this summer. I really wanted to see you in your 14 year because it is such an important 2 months in your life. I have really enjoyed watching you transition from just a camper to a real Avodian this summer. After impressive DW and Avoda tourney performances I can’t wait to see what you to in CW, best of luck. Alex - I’m so happy I was able to convince you to come back even if your stay was cut short because of your finger. I’m thrilled to here you plan on coming back next summer so that you too can have the Avoda experience.
Leon - I can not thank you enough for being the role model and mentor you are to me. I wouldn’t be the counselor, Avodian or person I am today without you. 2K1714 - Don’t skip CIT year 2K1814 - You guys are an incredible age group. I can’t wait to see you guys do big things next summer (that don’t involve hitting on Liza). NCCSU - We need to keep meeting for classes even after August 16.

This summer at AVODA is finished. Oh! But it was the best one of my life. Hey! Camp AVODA I have no words to describe the experience I had here, and all of you had a part in it. I want to thank the counselors for explaining one of the hardest games on the planet for me, baseball.. I hope I left a piece of myself in camp, cuz camp left a piece of it with me.
ups with you... *Big D in a chicken costume calls me to make a speech* It’s my first year in AVODA and I like it very much!
BUNK 3, bunk 14, ID2017, infirmary staff, kitchen staff, and everybody else. I love all y’all!
Big D, I could not ask for a better co-counselor and you taught me so much about AVODA, and I look up to you a lot (cuz you so tall man..come on...) Infirmary guys I love you, you were there for me all the time, and our tea time was an American experience! Have I forgotten someone?.. No? Last chance.. A! Bunk 3! The pirate Bunk, you made this summer so special for me, it was like a rollercoaster we had our ups and downs, and you made me crazy sometimes, but I love you guys! And I could not ask for a better bunch of rebels, Without you I’m just a woodshop instructor with a hat, you will see me around and doing push

partner in crime. You are truly the definition of a best friend.
How lucky I am to have something so special that saying goodbye is this hard. My tenth summer at Avoda was easily one of the most enjoyable. This summer was full of new experiences and friends I would never have expected to make. I now realize this was simply par for the course. Avoda has shaped the man I have become and (with the uncertainty that the future holds) I am glad I got to cherish every moment. 2k1514 I could not be more proud to be considered part of this group. We are both large and diverse. The moments I spent with each one of you were special and I wouldn’t trade them for the world. Matty I can still remember seeing you waiting on your bed for me on Opening Day in Bunk 3. While I certainly had forgotten who you were, I’m glad you remembered me. From writing superhero mock drafts in 6A to late night writing J.C. year I can’t remember being mad at you for an entire day. You’re a lovable oaf and a great

Mitch We never really talked until 12 year as you were stuck in that Needham clique of yours. As we originally bonded over sailing, I’d like to push off this shout out by thanking you for putting up with my antics and being a voice of reason in a sea of Matty. You are the most reasonable and intelligent member of staff (and I don’t think you need me to tell you that.) You have made my Avoda experience that much more amazing. I see a bright future for the Big 3. Also, you don’t have the gnards to make this camp a better place. Alex When I first heard that my co was an Israeli, I was skeptical of how well you’d fit in. Now I realize that you were the best co I could have possibly asked for. You’re love of cowboys and moonshine matched with your distaste of falafels and pita constantly made me question if you were more of an American than myself. I am so thankful for your hard work and patience in the bunk. We really need to keep in touch. Bunk 3 You are all crazy and not afraid to be yourselves. Those are the signs of a true Avodian. Even Though you all constantly kept me on my feet, I will still miss each one
of you. Eric, D.J., Bennett,Noah, Drew, Bobby, Gabe, Nathan, Avi, Cy, and Jason-- I hope to see you all here for years to come. Tricky and Eitan You guys were my role models. I hope I did you guys proud.

One more summer at Camp Avoda comes to a close. I can’t believe I just finished being a first year SC. Being on staff is so much fun and coming back is the best feeling in the world. Not knowing whether or not I will be back for another summer kills me. Hopefully I will be back for many summers to come with my brothers. 2K1414: BRICK SQUAD!!! I love you boys and I can’t wait to be back again for another summer. Each summer gets better with you guys here and without you all it wouldn’t be nearly the same. We are growing on numbers somehow so let’s keep it going.

CO’s: Matty and Edry things were pretty tight first month but we set it right second month. We killed it all summer. Here’s to the foulest area in camp!
This was my first summer on staff and probably the best of my 8 year career. I can’t believe this year is already coming to an end, it feels like precamp was yesterday. I wasn’t sure whether or not I would be back this summer, but the decision to come back has proved to be one of the best of my life. Every day this year I’ve been making memories that are going to last me a life time. I’ve strengthened a bunch of old friendships this year, and made a lot of new ones too. This one has been the best yet and I can’t wait for next year. 2k15 14: Only 13 of us left. 31 was only two years ago. We got a lot closer as a group this summer and I can’t wait for more. A few of us missed a year of classes at NCCSU, but they’ll be back next year. Velt: I’m still feeling for you man. You didn’t deserve to lose one of your summers here but the few times we had were great, may we meet again as CO’s down the road…

This has been a great and different summer. It was a new experience to be on staff, but it was also a great one. This was my 9th summer at Avoda and I plan to have many more years. JC year has been amazing and it is only going to get better from here. Bunk 4 You guys were an amazing bunk to have and this bunk will have a special place in my heart for years and years. You were my first bunk and have been great throughout the summer. I hope all of you keep on coming back to camp and make even greater memories than the ones we have made this year.
David and Mitch You 2 are my best friends and we have been through it all. We have gone from campers to counselors now. We have many more years ahead of us and we will go through them all. You were great counselors with your campers and also knew how to make something fun. Let’s keep on going strong.
WaterFront Staff This was a great waterfront staff and shout out to Waterfront clean up on a great job everytime
David Bacdayan This has been an eventful year for us both. We have gotten even closer this year and even bunked together for first month. You have been a great Co even when we were a man down. Thanks for a great summer together in bunk 4. Ben Edry You came in a little later but you were welcomed right in. The bunk enjoyed having you and you were a great Co to have around. It would be an understatement to say that i was excited for camp before the summer. Nearly everyone was back from 2k14 and we added Kirk, everything was set for a sick summer. Pre camp and all of first month was filled with plenty shenanigans. Second month, got yake back and good times kept rolling. Summer 17 was one for the books. Great White Sharks: Yup! Dub! In precamp when we assembled this team I knew we were watching a dub no doubt. We had the boys and we knew all we had to was execute and we did. I can’t believe the summer is almost over! Being on stuff was a great experience that I will never forget. Going into summer I had no idea what expect. My brother would always tell me that Avoda isn’t just a camp for campers, it’s a counselors camp. My brother was right! Being a counselor at Avoda is one of the best jobs I will ever have, I can’t imagine spending my summers elsewhere. Summer 2017 was absolutely amazing! BUNK 5: You guys were awesome this summer! I hope you guys learned a lot from me this summer. I can’t believe you guys are going to be juniors next year. Multiple times this summer, both in and out of camp, I have repeated the same phrase to describe how my time at Avoda has been. When I say, “I can’t imagine myself anywhere else during the summer,” it is one hundred percent true. Avoda continues to teach me what it means to be a good friend, an athlete, a leader, and everything else that together makes an Avodian. BUNK 5: I have been trying to think of a word to describe your age group and only one comes to mind. You guys are crazy, most of the time in the right way. The entire summer you always managed to keep things exciting in the bunk with endless jokes, card games, and just general shenanigans. You all have so much time left at this place, and I can’t wait to see what you do with it. CHAFETZ: The preseason acquisition and the deadline deal. Having you in the bunk and up at the podium during services guaranteed there would never be a dull moment. You’re going to do awesome at GW this year, and I can’t wait to see you next summer. SHAY: Ever since our pre-camp trip to buy the rug, I knew we would work well together and
lock it down. Watching you in all aspects of camp, whether it be in the bunk, on desert war staff, and this upcoming week in color war, has given me ways I can become a better counselor. You’re going to kill it at UNH, and thank you for being an amazing co. 2K15: Our numbers keep getting smaller but we keep getting stronger. This summer was, without a doubt, the craziest, most chill, and most fun summer at the same. I wouldn’t rather have any other group of guys go through this journey with me. We killed it this year and I can’t wait for next summer when, I’m hoping, all of you and even a few more are back. Love you guys. BACDAYAN AND KLIGGY: Getting really close with both of you this summer was awesome. Boat rides, 1 on 1, and everything in between. I can’t wait to see you guys in the offseason. ARTIE: You’ve been my best friend at this place since I walked in to Bunk 4. I knew we wouldn’t be in the same bunk this summer, but having you across the hall was the next best thing. Every year keeps getting better, and I can’t wait for the next one Eight summers down, more to go.

Summer 2017 was another summer for the ages. Then again, I can’t complain when I get to spend another summer at home with my best friends in the world. Looking back on it, I have no regrets returning to camp for my 10th summer. All I can ask and hope for is to have the opportunity to return to camp avoda for years to come 2k21 bunk 14: since I had basically all of you as campers at some point this summer, I’m going to wrote my profile to all of you. First off you guys are all characters. All of you never fail to make me laugh and show me what I love about this place. Seeing you all enjoy your summers to the fullest makes me anticipate how you all will develops in the years to come. All I can say is never change who you all truely are because that’s what makes you guys such an enthusiastic, creative and adventurous bunk. Keep coming back, you won’t regret it. Shay: we got shafted, coulda had the best area for 2 months in camp this summer. Soph. Overnight was dank in the whip. Julia will always be around to make visits to five right. 2k1414: My brothers, my best friends in the world. I love that we were able to bring so many back (- one of us getting shafted...). Per usual, we were once again the heaviest boolin, most elite 14 at camp. Nothing has changed and I expect nothing to change in the future. I hope we’ll all be able to make time in our summers to come back for as we can. We need to keep coming back as long as we can. We gotta keep good times alive. I love you all. 2k1314: no matter what, y’all are some of my best friends in the world since ‘08. Thank you for mentoring us throughout the summer, even though we may struggle to do the basics occasionally. Never the less, I know that we will always stay close with you guys no matter what. Can’t wait for Israel next summer. Great white sharks: way to catch that dub, squad was elite. Great to jump in the lake again. Drew,
thank you for the Oppertunity, glad we ended up in the water when it was all said and done Senior hoops: it was dope coaching you guys all summer. We asked you to do one thing and you succeeded. Win the Avoda tourney. Although we lost that 1st finals game, I had no doubt that you guys would come back and beat crest in the finals again, good to win with such a great group of players and guys overall. made me laugh, angry, smile and do a whole lot of unnecessary pushups , the summer wouldn’nt have been the same without you guys, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Keep that amazing Avoda spirit. Until we meet again. So this is the end of my first summer here at camp Avoda. This summer was amazing and I’ll take this experience with me wherevever I go. I can’t let it be done without a few shoutouts to the people that made it happen Avoda staff, thank you for welcoming us with open arms, teaching us the traditions, what the heck deadzone is, and of course, letting me know to stay away from the humus. Seriously guys, you’re awesome. Administration staff, thank you for all your help, support and advice. Infirmary staff, our home away from home. Kitchen staff, my “achim”. Israeli shlichim, you know I love you guys. The campers, the real reason I’d walk around every day with a huge smile on my face. You guys are awesome

My 8th being a counselor was one to remember. Being on Senior staff is an incredible time. What I have learned from being in staff, especially a younger one, is that the longer you stay, the more responsibility you get. Being able to be involved in desert war and color war as a first year SC was a life changing experience.Through out the offseason, whenever I’m thinking about camp, color war always comes to mind which keeps me wanting to come back. Frank and shay: I love coming back to camp and having as much fun as we can. I wouldn’t want to spend my summers with anyone else. Here’s to showering and “writing” as many letters as we can. Kirk and Chafetz: I want to thank you guys for introducing me to camp. Newton always provided us with good times, but when we’re at camp it’s a whole new game. Can’t wait to spend countless more years with you guys.

It was an unreal experience and we made the most out of it. 2k1314: I can’t wait for Israel with you guys. It is a lot of fun being with you guys on staff. Once again, can’t wait for next summer. 0814: you guys have been my mentors all along the way and I want to thank you for where you have gotten me. You showed me all the ropes to camp and can’t wait to utilize them in the future. Bunk 7: This summer has been a blast with you guys. You are a very special age group with a lot of talent. Can’t wait for years to come.
Opper, Abe, Edry and Velt: I consider you all my blood brothers. When we are together, we are constantly making stories to tell in the future. Once again, I can not wait to be back with you guys for another summer. 2K1414: We are the elite 14 of camp. On and off the field, we

My first summer as a counselor is coming to a close, and the rumors that I have heard are true. Staff does have just as much fun, if not more than the campers. From coaching the Tennis Team to two victories in one summer to teaching kids how to sail, I have taken on the task of making sure that each one of my campers has had the time of their life this year. I will continue to come back as a counselor for as long as I can, because I can honestly say that I wouldn’t want to spend my summer anywhere else.
Waterfront StaffWorking on the waterfront this summer has been a dream come true. Ever since I was a camper I have wanted to be able to teach people how to sail, waterski, and boat, and this year I finally got to be a part of where it all happens. I couldn’t have imagined how much fun it would be to be on the waterfront every day, and I hope that I can continue to be with you guys in the years to come.
2k1514You guys are my brothers and although our numbers have decreased over the years, the connections we have built just keep getting stronger. I hope that we can all keep coming back as long as we can, and continue to make each summer the best one we’ve ever had.
OpperYou were a great co-counselor, and we did a nice job holding down the fort in Bunk 8. I know that we were able to make this summer one that will never be forgotten in the eyes of our campers. I’m glad we got to get closer this summer, and I hope we can each continue to return for many more.
Tennis TeamI want to thank everyone who was a part of the tennis team both first and second month this summer. Without you guys, we would never have been able to win not just one, but both of our tournaments this year. You guys will go down in history as the most remarkable Tennis Team that Avoda has ever had, and I feel honored to be a part of such an incredible team.
Bunk 8You guys were awesome to work with this year. We had some fun times, from late night McDonalds to full-cabin gaga. I hope that I was able to make this summer the best one you’ve ever had, which has been my main goal from the beginning of the summer right up until the end. You guys should all continue to come back to camp for as long as you can, because your 14 needs each and every
one of you to make it the best that it can be. Matty, DavidYou guys have been my best friends for many years now and this summer proves that nothing had changed. It’s amazing to look back on all the fun that can be had when you’ve known people for over half your life at a place you all consider a second home. I hope that we can keep returning year after year and keep the “Big 3” strong even after our Avoda careers.

Another summer at camp Avoda and I couldn’t be more thankful. This place is unique. If with changes coming to camp, it’s the people who will hold this place together. Bunk 10 It’s been a crazy summer with you guys. As we can all agree, first month was tough but you guys have picked up the slacked and been killing it since. I hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as I have.
2k1414 Fellas, i love you all and you guys are the reason I come back each year. Becoming so close and having brothers out of Acton is the best. There are way too many memories or dot dots to try and list all of them but I know that this list will just continue to grow and grow. I can’t wait to be part of so many more good times. We’ll be running camp real soon so let’s keep coming back and run it together. Dft.
Bunk 14 You have a lot of interesting personalities in your 14 but that’s what makes you guys special, you got a little of everything. There’s a bright future for a lot of you here.
Opper and Kirk You two have been great all summer and I’ve loved kickin it. I know when we lost Velt for the summer it was tough on you but hope we helped fill the void.
Gino, Brett, Romanow, Waltzman With the kids having their ups and downs, having you guys as co’s has for sure made it better. Even though Romanow took a lot of my money and Greg may have made me a gambler, theses two months would not be the same without you guys in the cabin. And brett, keep doing you.
Avoda Vloggers The page is truly booming. Love chilling with you guys and there’s a truly bright near future for both of you.
2k1314 It’s been great getting to better know each of you year after year. I feel that I’m very close with a lot of you now and can’t wait for Israel just around the corner. So pumped.
Wes I Loved working with you first month and it’s a bummer it didn’t work out second month but best of luck this week.
put in a lot of effort thus far and let’s make it worth it for that last jump of the summer. Sam Thank you for always being there for me. It’s weird not having you at camp anymore but I’m able to start growing into my own. I’ll keep the watman legacy running strong!

It’s been awesome running the beach volleyball this year, and I hope the kids have learned a lot. The big dance is coming up and I’m super excited to see how the teams end up and who will get to taste the lake for the final time this summer. Sam: You’re in for the week of your life and which ever team has the privilege of calling you captain is getting one of the best young men to come through camp. I already know your going to kill it. What a summer! First time on staff was a complete success. All of staff welcomed me in and from day one I knew I fit right in. The responsibility of a counselor is a big one, being able to connect with my campers and show them the avoda lifestyle that u grew up with. As this summer unfortunately comes to an end, I’d like to share some of the highlights:

PGD- Always a pleasure to see you. Camp would never be the same without you. Much love.
It’s that time of the summer (and Leon has only asked me 3 times to send in my staff profile) wow. It’s been a good one maybe even the best. This is the best place on earth, hands down, sell my house -forget the mortgage- I’ll move into the goat. It’s been 13 wonderful summers here and hope to see a few more here. If I could wish upon a star, I’d wish for Avoda to stay just as I knew it as young boy, growing up with Avoda at the center of my heart as I hope in the future my kids do too. Avoda, I’ll never forget the impact you had on me as a person, and to all my past counselors; I thank you. Bunk 11- you guys were aight. Bunk 12 United- It’s been a pleasure having you guys this summer. From the bottom of my heart I can say I enjoyed every moment we spent together this summer and will miss you all in the off-season. Campppp Avooodddaaaa, a place where boys grow up and become brothers. My time at Avoda has been nothing short of amazing. I was a 8 year 14er, just finished my 2nd S.C. summer. In all my 8 years as a camper, I thought being a camper was the best thing. Little did I know, staff only gets better. As you get older, it becomes even better and better. Come back as long as you can. This place is great, we can never lose class Avoda traditions. Bunk 12: Hi!! Boys I honestly feel so invested in your 14 and am so happy I was part of it this summer. Before this summer I did not interact that much with your 14. I could never have chosen a better bunk. This summer I’ve grown to know so many of you very well and love the relationship we had and will continue to have. I am already excited to watch you guys continue to grow and dominate in 14 next summer!

Ryan- Hi Ryan, first congrats again on getting another senior soccer Win! Until this year, in the past 11 summers, I was always at camp with you. When you were not here, your presence was missed. I am so happy it worked out and we still made it an amazing summer! Love you, man.

Ur my boy and I was so hyped to be in Ddubs w u, and it did not disappoint. Kill it at PSU, and I can’t wait for big things next summer!
Hi, I’m Ryan Litner and I’m from Sharon, MA. I was more than excited to be back this year and everyone definitely made the most of it. This is my 12th summer at Camp Avoda and I’m happy to say that it won’t be my last. This summer was a blast and I couldn’t have enjoyed it as much without the help of others. Bunk 12-- Cannot express how hyped West and I were when we found out we had y’all. You guys definitely lived up to and exceeded our wildest expectations. I had an amazing summer with you guys and am hoping for a reunion next year ;) Brett-- Loved having u here this summer. Although u may not have gotten all you wanted this summer, if there’s one thing I have learned at this camp is that good things come to those who wait. Herd-- What a ride, shame we came up short, it’s a game of inches.

Joppy-- I know I owe u a shoutout from last summer, so here it is.
Drew-- We kicked it heavy this summer, and had a few disagreements but more good times along the way. I can’t wait to visit u at Wisco Duece-- I truly don’t have enough words to express how greatful I am for your guidance and the fact u always have my back. U went from my counselor to one of my closest friends at this camp, and that’s truly a beautiful thing. Best of luck this year. . . We’ll be in touch Royals--- Things certainly flipped around a lot this year, but I can honestly say we have the perfect squad and are really coming together. I can’t wait for a great week and a lake jump
Jeagle-- Had an absolute blast on staff with u this year, really hope I can make it down to Triangle X at Bama! Booñe-- While u may always be seeping out, ur still my boy! Praying u can find a way to come back next year Bill-- Isreal clearly did u well, and we certainly held down the fort this summer, even tho I never went to hockey. Kill it at Hofstra and remeber ur less than 4 hours away from me! Craig-- Gino my man what can I say, from UBSM to Tiki, ur my mans. I can’t wait for u to come down to UD and for me to come to the Zoo and visit u and Julia! West-- crazy summer with u in 12, on the Herd, and in Cdubs. Let’s hope we finnally get ours this week. Dot Dots
2k13--- Another summer in the books! Wow! Same bunk 14! Now senior staff! Surreal! Crazy! Nuts! Scott! Sad Bryce isn’t here tho :( Hopefully all these friends come back next summer for more fun times at camp in Middleboro Massachusetts! 2013 Bunk 14: I love each and every one of you. You guys are the reason I come back every summer knowing my best friends will be there. We have had 7 strong since Jc year. This is not the end boys, we may be frustrated at times but we owe it to Avoda to come back for one last hoorah. Jared Fixler: I wish you could have come back this summer. It was weird not having you by my side. Thank you for every opportunity you have given me and for the lessons you taught me. I know you are killing it in the real world. To my Herd: To everyone on this team I can’t thank you enough for the effort and heart you gave. We were so close and I wouldn’t have changed a thing. Royals: Lets get this dub, I’m back for blood. Ken: Thank you for everything you do for this place and for the opportunities you have given me. Abe: I’m still upset things didn’t go the way they should have. I hate being across the aisle from you and I couldn’t have asked for a better one. Good luck this week but more importantly good luck in school, I know you’ll kill it. Ryan: Our friendship has no words to express it so hears
something funny. Help help the secretary has fallen. Opper: You are one of my best friends here and I truly think you are one of the funniest people on earth. I’m happy I was able to take you on my team and have fun with football. 2018 14: I did not know what to expect from you guys going into the summer. I have learned to love each and every one of you as your own characters. I know that you guys have the potential to be one of the best fourteens that has ever come through Avoda.

Dear 2017 Bunk 14, It’s been an amazing journey over the past 3 years. You guys are a great group of kids and a great bunk 14 that cares about camp and has a positive impact on camp. You guys led camp the way it was supposed to be led. You excelled at desert war, color war, league, and being great all around leaders at camp. i had an amazing time with you guys this summer and I hope you had a great time as well. You guys definitely built the best bonfire I’ve been at camp for and you guys proved to be a truly resilient bunk. For the rest of my life I will have amazing memories from this summer, from hanging out in the bunk with you guys, to building the bonfire, to the bunk 14 overnight, to the big camp events. This truly was a special summer and for the rest of your lives you will always have a friend in me. Miklos & Joco- You guys know you’re my boys and I’m happy we got to be here this summer.

15th Year!! Another summer at Avoda has come and gone. This one felt really fast. Every time I come back to this place I seem to find one more thing that I love so much. This summer certainly had a different feel to it. All in all, it was a good summer. As this summer concludes, I look forward to what the summer of 2018 may bring. Before I get there, I want to thank a few people for the summer of 2017. CIT’s – To say this summer was a transition would be an understatement. This was my second year as CIT Director. I certainly learned a lot from the previous summer. Even though there was only 11 of you, you still impressed. We certainly had our ups and down, I know I pushed you guys a lot. I wanted you to realize your true potential and push yourself. This year you guys continued the great bond amongst yourselves that was created last year. I look forward to having you guys around as JC’s next summer. Keep in touch!
Ty – Great work this summer with all of the extra stuff you did around camp. Build on that for next summer. Staff - Great work this summer! Bubba – Forever in our hearts. PGD – Glad to have you back at camp at selective moments this summer and happy you are still such a big part of the Avoda team. Admin – Another great year! Ronni, we were glad to welcome you to the team. You have been a great addition.Thank you for all of your work behind the scenes and in preparation for this summer. Avoda – To all of the campers at Avoda, thank you for being you. No matter how many changes are made to this place, the campers are ultimately what make this place run. Without you, Avoda isn’t Avoda. Try a food creation at home! I apologize for all those I did not name individually or at all this. But to everyone, thank you for another great summer. See ya next year!
2k1514 - You guys were impressive this summer. Thank you for all teh hard work you put in throughout the summer.

2k8:The old men of this place-you guys will continue to be lifelong friends of mine. I am happy you could all return and I love you all very much. I am already extremely late on submitting my profile, but have a couple of things I need to get off my chest. After a really difficult year for me personally, this past month at Avoda has offered me solstice and peace that I rarely experience now-a-days. People change, relationships end, but as cliché as it may sound Avoda remains constant. I swore that I would never come back to camp, but somehow the Avoda bug caught up to me and forced me to return. At Avoda I have found my most real friends, my most genuine happiness, and my most complete self. I am in love with everything that is camp Avoda, and know that no matter what happens in life this place will always be in the core of my soul. Now time for some shout outs. Ken: Thank you. This 2nd month tour is impossible without your generosity and compassion. I can never repay you, and hope that you understand how greatful I am.

Drew: I love you Buddy. I know going solo this whole summer was difficult but it showed what type of an Avodian you are.Thank you for coming back. 2k13: You guys have your time coming next year. Best of luck, I know you will take the reigns of senior staff in a positive light. 2k14: Keep boolin’. You guys are characters and have reached the bare minimum of your potential at this place. Please, please, please keep coming back. I promise you, it only gets better. AJ: There’s nothing that needs to be said. You are one of my best friends, and through the tough times you have always been a voice of reason. I love you and was beyond happy that you could make it back for the tail end of this summer. Leon: Thank you for everything you have done for me throughout my time here. You have become
one of my great friends, and I hope you realize how appreciative I am of your support. I love you. Bubba: I miss you everyday. You are the one I speak to in my dreams, and you are the one who guides me in my struggles. Keep smiling up there pal. Until next time, keep thriving Avoda. -Jake

In about 2 weeks I will begin my senior year of college.Throughout all my major life events and all my travels, Avoda has remained the only constant in my life. Having the opportunity to come back for the final 2 1/2 weeks of summer 2017 was far from ideal- I wish I could have been here for the whole summer. But nonetheless, I was instantly welcomed back into my community at Avoda and was able to assume the role of half senior staff member and half administrator. I truly loved working as both a leader of staff and as a go-to contact for administration. My 13 summers at camp have taught me a few things. First, I learned that things never turn out quite how you imagine. Looking back a few months, I did not think coming back to Avoda was even a slight possibility, but nonetheless I was still compelled to return after completing outside responsibilities. Second, I learned how to deal with change at camp. Every year there are new changes, and every year in the future there will be new changes. When those changes are out of your hands, you have to adapt, move on, and make the best out of everything. Avoda has to change to survive, and campers and staff alike have to learn how to adapt in order to keep the good times rollin.
Avoda is by FAR the most meaningful place and community of people I have. I will always stay involved with Avoda and give back as much as I can. Avoda has made me who I am. Staff- I love all you guys. Keep coming back. Internships are stupid. But stay in school. Jake Alexander- Hello and how are you! Without you I would not have come back to Avoda these past few weeks. Because of us, 2k11 went out on top- and that’s something to be proud of. Love you forever my big medicine man!! Leon: Thanks for all you do for this place, you really are the glue that holds Avoda together. Thank you for always being there for me for guidance and as a friend. Bubbs would be so proud to see where you are now and how you have kept the Avoda spirit alive.
