DEDICATION

riendly, warm, outgoing, thoughtful, and always willing to help.

These are just some of the words that I would use to describe our camp mom, Jill Shifman. This is Jill’s 5th year at Avoda and she likes it very much. In fact, if you asked her to quit her day job and come to camp full time, she would probably do so. Jill is always willing to lend a helping hand around camp.This summer, she has played many different roles at Avoda including mom, nurse, program director (creating the new popular elective, Cooking with Jill),

counselor, friend, and the director’s wife. She has given numerous tours to potential Avodians, helped homesick campers adjust to camp life, and with the help of others, created a community garden. She is in fact a Jill-of-all-trades.

Campers want to be around Jill because of her warm disposition. She always has an open ear and will listen to anyone who has a problem and needs to talk. Counselors can and have learned a lot from her. She displays patience in the most trying situations while always

keeping a smile on her face. The one and only negative is the fact that she isn’t here nearly enough.

The real world takes her away from camp for a few days every week. When Jill is gone the program must go on. Campers, go to their assigned periods while counselors and administrators fulfill their job responsibilities. It’s just not nearly as much fun when she is away.

Executive Director’s Message

A

s I sit here writing this message, I cannot believe that less than two weeks remain before the end of my 47th year at Camp Avoda.

It has been a wonderful summer, with great campers and a super staff, from the Administration down to the Kitchen Staff.

On the whole we had excellent weather with the exception of the unbelievable lightning and thunderstorm on July 18th.

Fortunately all systems are finally up and running.

The third try was the charm when it came to spraying Middleboro against the deadly mosquitoes.

We prepared for the spraying on two successive evenings and thought that they were finished when all of a sudden, after dark, on the third night, the aerial spraying took place. We all made a mad dash for the cabins and were successfully sheltered as the actual spraying commenced.

There have been many fewer mosquitoes since then.

This was an exciting summer for me with my 8 year old grandson starting his overnight camping experience. He had a great two weeks and wanted to stay two more weeks, but his father and mother had other plans. However, he has already informed us that

he will be back next summer for the entire summer.

I want to thank the members of the Board of Directors for their support during this past year as well as Ken Shifman and Tom Leavitt. We have worked closely together to make season 86 a truly wonderful experience for the 194 campers who were enrolled this summer.

I believe the crowning achievement for all of us was the purchase of 8.56 acres of abutting land which we have been pursuing since 1978. It was a long, slow battle which we finally won on July 24th. This land will be put to good use in the years to come.

I want to thank the kitchen staff headed by Scott Rubeck and Chris Lis, the infirmary staff, headed

by Shannon Armstrong, the maintenance staff, headed by Ernie Varnum, and the administration headed by Director Ken Shifman, along with Adam Miller, Leon Dyer, Matt Nannis, Josh Fox, Ethan Davis, and Scott Rosen. A big thanks to Abe Klein for all his hard work with the photography program and with the photos on the website. I also want to thank the hard-working bunk counselors who did an excellent job making sure the campers had

a fabulous summer of fun.And last, but not least, the 16 CITS who were terrific. They were always there when we needed them.

Lastly, I want to thank my wife, Bobbie, for her support and advise, here at camp, as well as throughout the year.

I hope that our Capital Campaign will prove to be successful and show wonderful results with the start of the 2013 season.

I wish everyone a healthy year and hope to see all of you back on the shores of Beautiful Lake Tispaquin under the whispering pines.

Ken Shifman Director’s Message

I had a great idea this summer.

I was going to showcase my extensive collection of Avoda T-shirts and apparel.

I planned on making an announcement about it at the podium – but then got cold feet. People don’t like other people who boast – surely a lesson learned at Avoda.

But I had been telling friends this spring, “I have so many Avoda shirts, I have one for every day of the month!” I counted them out and had planned on rolling out my own version of ESPN’s “30 for 30.”

After getting a few opinions, I decided to roll them out silently but deadly.

(Come on – I am talking about my shirts!)

I figured I would wear them and see if people noticed or cared (Thanks Bubba!).

With little fanfare I wore my soccer shirt from two years ago. My League shirt from three years ago. My alumni weekend shirt from 14 years ago. And on.

I found out that my shirts were a metaphor for all the things I think about Avoda. So many positive thoughts and memories. So many things I like. Different shirts for different days. Different themes and messages – but based on the foundation and central five letters, “A-V-O-D-A.” I love the place. I love the kids and the staff and the community. We are lucky to be part of this amazing organization and community, and to be able to create such amazing and unique experiences.

Where is this going? I want to honor my shirt collection by simply listing 30 things about this summer. If you use your imagination, you could map each thought to its own shirt. I am sure if you were here this summer, like me, you gained four to five new Avoda shirts – and likely more than 30 amazing memories. Thanks to everyone who helped run this nasty program. (I learned just today that “nasty” means “exceptional.”)

1. I am the official Moses of the Geese.

Each morning I wake up and lead them off the field to the Promised Lake.

2. I know I have accomplished all that I can: I finally can tell which Hefter twin I am talking with.

3. Thanks to Shannon and Roberta and Anne and Hillary. You run a critical

component of camp.

4. Lunch on Thursdays with Benji was fun – thanks for the company.

5. Poker with Bunk 4 was a highlight of the summer.You guys need a little help with the rules, but totally get the social piece!

6. Abe – if I had a nickel for every compliment parents gave about you, I would have a lot of nickels. (Did I get that saying right?) Great job!

7. Sitting in the bleachers with Avoda at Fenway Park – sums “It” all up: Great vibe, great friends, great energy, alumni, everyone psyched and hanging out. What a night!

8. Bunk 2 – you guys are good at cards too. Blackjack and also Candyman. Nate – thanks for teaching us. Adam – keep working on your winks. Josh – did you really keep getting the same card?

9. Dead Zone goal keeping with Sam Frank – we were pretty good!

10.That lightning storm was unreal. My hair still is not straight.

11. Night bike ride with headlights was one of the coolest things I did all summer.

Thanks Matt and Josh for something special to me.

12. Who knew ref’ing kickball would be so difficult? Plotty – we came up with a good system.

13. Ernie – I am glad you enjoyed the Willie Nelson. You are always on my mind.Thanks for your year-round work for Avoda.

14. Speaking of Plotty – it was like Ground Hog Day – you kept coming into my office with Jr. Hoops trophies every day.

15. PGDizzle – it’s always fun to work with you. Thanks for your dedication to Avoda.

Thanks for your great sense of humor.

16. Sam Watman – thanks for ref’ing with me too. Hope you didn’t mind being stuck with me.

17. 4th period hoops was a good run. Lots of sweat, two airballs, patient teammates.

18. Kayaking with Jill. Just as good as Cooking with Jill. Also taking the ski boat out was awesome. Thanks for all you do to support Camp Avoda and me! You are the best.

19. A 30-28 Desert War where no one – I mean no one – knew who won? It doesn’t get any better.

20. Scott, Chris and the kitchen staff – great work. You guys are an upbeat group. I love coming in and hearing Flo-Rida cranking out of the speakers. Thanks for all the non-stop meals. Thanks for help with my custom orders. Thanks for accommodating all our schedule changes!

21. To all the campers who extended your stays – thanks for enjoying! Those who do not stay for Color War should really do so next summer.

22.Team – Coach – Player (actually a shirt); staff did a great job on the field coaching and building team chemistry. You coached your campers off the field too. Nice work!

23. Tom – keep up the good work.Your job is difficult in many ways. Thanks for caring so much about Avoda and your work ethic.

24. An Avoda sweep of the tournament?

Unreal!

25. 3-3 staff volleyball champs with Josh and Greg. Thanks for believing in me [and picking me]!

26. Robin – a good first year out of the gate. Thanks for running such a creative Arts program!

27. Ethan Davis afraid of bees? Come on; we showed them who was in charge.

28. Did that bike guy really come that close to PGD? 29. I don’t think we could have scripted the Hot Dog eating contest any better.

30. CIT’s – thank you for being so great with campers. Your positive attitude is awesome.

31. Did Jr. Hoops really score 90 points in one game?

32. Admin Team: Bubba, Josh, Matt, Leon Starting back in May until now – we have come a long way and accomplished a lot! I enjoy working with you all and feel great about 2012. A huge thank you!

(My top ten lists always start at #11. This list is no different boasting 32 items out of 30. We’ll pay for the extra two out of my Canteen.)

I will get busy making all the shirts.

Director’s of Development and Capital Campaign Message Avoda Capital cap·i·tal noun \ˈka-pə-təl, ˈkapə t l\ Definition (Merriam-Webster) of CAPITAL a. a stock of accumulated good b. net worth c. a store of useful assets or advantages Recently “capital” has taken on additional and deeper meanings for Avoda. On the one hand, Avoda has an abundance of capital. Our largest reservoir of “accumulated good,” of “net worth,” and of “useful assets” and “advantages” are the men we produce.

Since 1927 and with never a summer missed (in the mid 1950’s however during the polio epidemic an eight week season was turned into 12 weeks as the camp was under quarantine.

Note: parents were not charged for the additional period), Avoda has consistently produced leaders, men of achievement, and men committed to improving their communities-whether it is their community of family, friends, neighborhood, Judaism, career, and/or all whom they touch. Sometimes this growth is evident during a boy’s time at Avoda and at other times it comes into focus later in life. Avodians sometimes can feel it as it is happening and others only come to know of Avoda’s impact during periods of retrospection. An Avodian in his 60s said to me, “When I reached my 50s, I realized that everything I needed to know about life I learned at Camp Avoda.” Still another alumnus in his 70s told me “Most successes or achievements in my life were rooted in values I learned at Avoda.”

This summer 12 Avodians (current staff and new alumni) experienced

our third year Avoda Birthright Israel trip. Camp Avoda: Leadership and Community was a customized program for participants in Israel immediately after Birthright extending their trip by five days. This program linked the Israel program to how they saw their responsibility to bring back and to give back what they experienced to serve the greater Avoda community.

When these staff members returned to camp they were inspired and their achievements and growth were evident, infectious, and shared with the Avoda community.

One parent of a current Avoda staff member on the trip wrote in part “My son had an amazing time and said some really cool things. The trip is incredible….and the Avoda program after really had it down. My son said he finally realized that being Jewish is not only about spirituality and traditions but it’s about the culture and the connection with other people that are Jewish. He even talked about how they want to bring some Jewish stuff into camp in a really positive way. The whole program was just amazing.”

A “culture and connection” ― that’s Avoda. On the athletic field or in Israel, and from generation to generation, we continue to produce leaders rooted by strong values, men of achievement, and men committed to improve their communities. Capital in abundance indeed.

Or course capital has a more tangible meaning as well. This summer we are launching the Camp Avoda Capital Campaign: The Tradition Continues. This exciting and innovative plan looks to renovate, broaden, and enhance Avoda. While respecting time honored Avoda rituals and traditions (think Fenway Park renovation), we will respond to the needs of today’s

and future Avoda families. With the help of all in and affected by the Avoda community we look to build a secure future for generations of Avodians to come. And of our $1,800,000 we’re already nearly halfway there.

This is an opportunity to give and give back. Help keep our capital abundant.

Be part of the capital that is Avoda. It is in our boys, our men, our alumni, and our communities. And it is in our future as well. I invite you to continue investing in the capital that is Avoda.

This 86th Avoda summer reached capital successes nearly every day-some new and others renewed. Congratulations and thank you to Mr. Davis and Bobbi, Ken and Jill, Bubba, Matt, Josh, Leon, Ethan, Scott, Abe, Scott and Chris, Shannon, and Ernie and the entire camp staff. Lastly, as I look at the young men in this year’s CIT program I see a bright future from the next generation of Avoda and community leaders from these smart, warm, and caring guys.Truly capital!

Avodian Staff

The Avodian Staff had a lot of work on their hands

from Opening Day to color war. We had fun working with the new technology of photoshop and so much more in these advanced computers. With Leon at the helm, everyone got the work done with time to spare.

Joey Sherman was the fastest typer this camp has seen, even with no thumbs. Quentin Vidal continued to be the master at choosing and editing pictures. The bunk 14 editors, though, wrote the articles while spending worthy time in the air conditioned Avodian room.

Drew Lukoff, Zee Elkinson, Benji Satloff, and Jake Swartz volunteered to be a part of the Avodian staff. We thank them for their support and for their work. This year’s yearbook is the best we’ve made in a while so we hope you enjoy it and appreciate our tireless work.

“ f you were to walk into bunk 1 on a typical day at camp, you would probably find Daniel Rashes putting on a singing/dancing show for the bunk, while Max and Leon battle it out in Connect 4. Zach, aka “Cheese” would have his faced buried in a book, and Simon and Sebastian would be engaging in a healthy debate about the state of the economy. At night, you would most likely find Bunk 1 sitting on Dan’s bed watching and helping him explore the magical world of Pokemon. We had an awesome summer in the bunk, and showed all of camp why we’re number 1!”

“During the first bunk night, Bunk 2 challenged Bunk 1 to a game of manhunt played all around camp. As the first round started, Sawyer Busney and Jesse Litchman thought of the idea to go into a mini-crease that was set up by bunk 14, inside the larger bunk 14 crease. The two of them stayed inside the crease for the duration of the round and led there bunk mates to victory.“

“ n a Wednesday we had some crazy ideas. Then at lunch we did one of the extra exotic ideas. We made a special drink that had iced tea and all of the condiments. Then Jake Snowiss, out of nowhere says, “I’ll drink it but you got to stop the Pranks!” The bunk agreed.

While Snowiss (a.k.a. snowman, snowcone) drank it, Evan Gray had his eyes wide open and his jaw dropped. While this is all happening Golov says where’s Max and Evan says he’s in the bathroom missing all of the excitement. Oh and we have more stories about Jake Rosken that can be explained by us another time.”

“ very night during the first month for bunk 4 was a blast, from smashing watermelons to telling funny stories. In second month more excitement came every night. We played poker and would tell jokes.�

“ ne morning at lineup, AJ gave all of the 5A campers girl names.

Ross was Erin, Turner was Brooke, Jonathan was Josephine, Jack was Leslie, Max was Tiffany, Danny was Mariah, Zach was Louise.

Some of the more funny ones were Curtis as Shaniqua, and Nathan as Ashley. Also, the campers gave AJ a girl’s name. It was Margaret.

For the next few days, we called everyone by their respective girl names.”

“ n the first bunk night of the first month, our cabin decided to renew a little rivalry. We choose the classic game of newcomb and as usual, it was very close until the end when it was tied 14-14. 5A was serving and they threw it right into the net. Wigon threw a nice serve but, Joco Duece made a great catch. He threw it to Gabe who spiked it right at Matt Bresslers feet. Bunk 5B cheered and, the entire cabin celebrated with chill zones.�

“ n the last night of the first month a bug bomb was being dropped and everyone was stuck inside. We were extremely bored until Julian Herman, a quiet kid that would never leave his comfort zone, had an idea. He gathered us together, then created and acted funny and wacky scenarios. Everyone loved it and it became known as late night with Herm.�

“ n a regular bunk clean-up day in 6B, Jake Romanow had to take out the trash. As he was emptying the trash into the dumpster the top of the trash can fell in. He had to climb into the trash in order to retrieve it. Afterwards, he pleaded his case to Greg and took a shower.�

“ n the second day of camp at lunch Ken announced that the evening activity was a bunk night. Originally we didn’t know what we were going to do but, finally we decided to do a flag rush on the beach against bunk 6B. Campers, counselors, and CITs all played. Everyone had a great time and both teams got to jump in the lake.”

“ nother great year at camp Avoda has come and gone. This year the rest of our bunk was very energetic. This year the night before the Mt. Monadnock trip we had a task to get to ride in the vans. The challenge brought the bunk closer to each other and had a great summer to remember.�

“ lackman gave us a challenge to have 7/9 of us pull an allnighter. If we succeded in waking in him every two hours, we would get to go to Apazidis that morning at 6:30. During the night there were frogs everywhere. That was one our most memorable time we had together as a bunk.�

“ veryone in bunk 11 was locked inside for a massive thunderstorm that swept through Middleboro. Lightning struck multiple spots in camp including the field and the flagpole. Then everyone scrambled and began yelling as the lightning hit the bunk twice. After everyone settled down we realized someone was missing. 2012 bunk 14 will go down as one of the most unique, profound, and spectacular 14’s camp has seen in years. Filled with characters, athletes, comedians, and just great guys, the 2012 bunk 14 made the summer what it was: one to remember.

summer Bunk 14 gets the privilege of going on a three day overnight as a chance to bond even more with their bunkmates and counselors. This summer was no different. We found out Tuesday night that we were leaving Thursday morning. With the vans all packed and breakfast taken care of, we headed to our first destination. First on the agenda: Hampton Beach for an afternoon of waves and a scavenger hunt. Sam Roth and Coby Gesten focused mostly on completing the scavenger hunt while others like Max Goldfarb and Drew Stein focused on purchasing food and goodies for the rest of the trip. It was a hot afternoon and definitely a great day to spend at the beach. After the scavenger hunt ended we headed back to the vans to make the final stretch to the Lake Moxie campgrounds. We rushed

to unpack all our bags so that we could have ample time to take out the various kayaks and canoes that Lake Moxie had to offer.

Dinner consisted of a great BBQ arranged by head chef Leon and a bonfire was built where most people ended up at the end of the night.

At the start of day two we were awoken early in order to get ready for the big white water rafting trip. After a quick breakfast, lineup was called for everyone on the rafting trip.

The rapids were tough but well worth it. They did end up getting the best of Drew stein tackling Zee Elkinson into the Kennebec River. A delicious lunch was setup for us down the river and many people got in line for seconds, namely Tom Davige and Eddie Bernson. After the rapids, we returned to the campgrounds for a little relaxation before our next

excursion. That night we had another barbeque cooked

by Coby Gesten and Zee Elkinson. It was delicious.

Day two was concluded with a nice bonfire and smores.

The last day of the trip we had to wake up and pack up before we could start the day’s activities.

Our first stop was Dunkin Donuts and everyone was super happy. After that we went to a movie. Leon would not tell us our final destination. All he told us was to put on nice clothes.

We were in Boston and didn’t know were we were eating. We ended up eating at Maggianos. Maggianos is an Italian restaurant that is very good. They served us family style so it was all you can eat. It filled everyone up and we had so many leftovers after the meal.

Then we were off the dear old A-V-O-D-A.

much agreed upon best trip at Avoda began with a 7:30 a.m. departure on Thursday August 2. On the way to the mighty Androscoggin in Northern NH, we stopped for a visit at Hampton Beach.

The excitement began immediately as we pulled in and parked in the lot next to the NH State Police barracks.

We strolled the boardwalk for a couple of hours taking in all of the sights Hampton Beach had to offer us. After our fill of greasy food we loaded back into the vans and headed onward. Several

hours, hundreds of miles, and 1 moose later we passed Umbagog Lake and arrived at Saco Bound. The tents were set up quickly, and the fire was started.

We jumped in the river for the first of many swims as Chef Spencer Kaye grilled a feast for all. With the big day of canoeing ahead, we turned in early. The river was at a good level and provided us with 9 miles filled with many Class II/III rapids. The day of paddling was mostly a success, except the 1 canoe Saco Bound rented us that went in circles,

and the 3 canoes that never wanted to stop paddling. After resting up for a bit, we drove 40 minutes to have dinner in Berlin. People gorged themselves on fried food and double desserts.

Back to the woods we went. Leon woke us all up at the ungodly hour of 6:30 a.m. to begin our adventure filled day back to Middleboro. The fun began with lunch on Lake Winnipesauke on our way to OSG Paintball.

We stopped for chicken wings in Saugus and soon happily arrived back at camp. Of course, a good time was had by all.

The year started off for the

cits with a much-anticipated change, not being a camper.

None of us knew what to expect. Day one finally came along and we were immediately thrown into the water and expected to swim. New jobs were assigned, pre-camp tasks were delegated, and we slowly began our process of adjusting to the counselor life. The year kicked off as campers began to arrive and everyone settled in, summer 2012 was here. The days flew by and many of the incentives put in front of the 16 of us became realities; all of our hard work

was being compensated for. We had our league teams, long nights, out nights, the cit over night, and not to mention opportunities in Desert War, Color War, and the Avoda Tournament. Bunk rotations continued for four cycles and everyone

got a turn living in the freshmen through junior divisions while also rotating through the bungalow. Next to the bunk 14 experience, the cit year was certainly a close second. A new perspective of camp was depicted and everyone was back at Avoda.

at the helm, running the show down at the Camp Avoda chapel site. Benji Satloff was a regular as his right hand man, even taking over one Friday night when the rabbi was unavailable. Regular participants included Brett Fogel with the Shema Ve’ahavta, Cole Cooper with the Aleinu, and the ’08 14 holding it down with the silent Amida.Also, for the second consecutive year, the first Friday night service of the summer was held down at the waterfront, which provided a beautiful and holy place of worship to open the camping season. Services was, as always, every camper’s favorite activity of the week. leChaim, to Life!

2012 season at Camp Avoda had many exciting moments for a rookie like myself.

Between the busy days where we never seemed to have enough space, the variety of cases, and the trips to the doctors, no one can say that this summer was a dull one. These boys definitely play hard. Whether the campers needed a band-aide or an icepack, it was always nice to see new faces coming in to enjoy the A/C on hot days, and to say Hi! I cannot thank Hillary, Roberta, and Anne enough for all of their help and advice, the four of us made a fantastic team. More thanks to all of my incredible CIT helpers who showed up every morning and night to help when things could get especially hectic. Also much needed thanks goes to Ken,

Bubba and Josh for the support and up to date schedules, and to Jill for the many laughs and smiles. And of course thank you to all of the campers for being so welcoming and appreciative. I enjoyed meeting new people and living at such a beautiful camp all summer, and learning the Avoda way. I will always look upon my experience at Camp Avoda fondly.

On Wednesday

June 27 Camp Avoda opened its gates to for the 86th time. As parents and campers flooded in to get settled in, CITs loaded up the red truck with luggage.

Counselors waited anxiously at their bunks to see their old campers and meet the new ones. Administration sat in front of the main office checking campers in and taking their medicine. Once campers started settling in and parents said their goodbyes bunk 14 set up various activities around th

camp.

Knockout tournaments were held at the basketball courts, newcomb and volleyball were played at the beach, world cup was played on the field, and four square was played at the court.

After a great grilled cheese lunch the camp went back to their bunks for rest period.

Once rest period was over the divisions cycled through periods of infirmary check ups, elective sign ups, and swim tests in beautiful lake Tispaquin. After the busy day the camp gathered in the mess hall for dinner and

then finally as custom on opening day flagrush was played.

The camp was split into two teams, white and blue. The game started with the first half being freshmen and sophomores only.

Next was all camp.

Before bed the camp took their first avoda showers of the 2012 session, followed by bunk talks with their counselors. At the end of the day everybody was excited for their first real day of camp when they woke up in the morning.

4th of JULY

Throughout

the course of the entire year, bunk 14 plans one of the biggest events of the summer; the fourth of July. How should the bonfire be built? What should its name be? So, at the end of the day when the monstrous bonfire Zen was unveiled, everyone agreed work was worth the results.

The day started a little drizzly, but to everyone’s delight, the sun came out after lunch just in time for the carnival.

Annual favorites such as the dunk tank and slip and slide were

crowd pleasers while additions such as the human foosball proved to be a splendid plus as well. After activities such as the Hot Dog eating contest, won by Fixler, and Avoda gladiators, everyone was ready for the event of the evening: the Bonfire.

Speeches were given, each with it’s own unique message, with the bomb pops and fire works following ensuite. At the end of the day, all campers, and counselors had a terrific day filled with smiles, fun, Zen, and a great bonfire.

As the camp settled

in and met their new bunk mates, everyone’s favorite evening activity was approaching quickly. Dinner came and every Avodian knew that flagrush would be the first evening activity.

The captains of the blue team were Sam Roth and Drew Lukoff against Zee Elkinson and Benji Satloff.

The first quarter was Fr./So. as the standouts included Jonathan Cohen and Danny Blumenstein. The juniors and seniors took the field and blue quickly took a lead.

The play of the game that brought a huge arousing of the counselors was Alex Entner

completely trucking Josh Polasky. Drew Stein showed off his speed while Ben Robinson showed why he is the best younger flagrush player in camp, while Max Goldfarb used

a combination of both his speed and strength to score multiple flags keeping his team still in the race. Blue came out with the victory and camp was officially under way.

“ e want Zooball, yes we do. We want Zoball, how ‘bout you?” This chant continued to ring throughout the Mess Hall as campers anticipated their first Zooball of the summer.

Finally, the evening arrived when campers were able to test their skills in this intense activity.

The three balls soared into the sky, signaling the start of the game.

Immediately, campers began to sprint across the field, tossing balls back in forth in attempts to shoot at the goal and score points for their team. Before long, the cry of the megaphone signaled the end of the first half,

and Freshmen/Sophomore penalty shots would soon commence. Goalies fiercely dove to block even the hardest of shots.

As the second half began, campers continued to work hard and rip shots on net. The game came to a

close as Juniors/Seniors took their turn at penalty shots.

Many of the top athletes attempted to secure the win for their team but the Blue team ended up victorious with a fantastic save by the goalies.

Campers filled the Mess hall on aWednesday

night to find out tomorrow morning’s field trip was to Water Country! Everyone was asking around to find out what the biggest and most thrilling rides were. Geronimo was the highest and steepest water slide Camp Avoda has been to this decade. The camp dominated the line, and everywhere you looked you saw a fellow Avodian. Even the young guys loved it. Standouts on this ride include Sam “Squirrel” Levenson, David Maron, Josh “Cheech” Shankman, and Isaac Goldman. The food at the waterpark was also dominated by the Avodians hustling to grab a picnic table and a burger. Dr. Von Dark’s Tunnel of Darkness was another scary ride that campers went on.

On a hot, sunny July afternoon Camp Avoda

ventured off to popular Kimball Farms in Westford, Mass. After the short ride up 495, campers were delighted to hear about the “give me five” pass that their bracelets entitled them to. As some chose to get a quick bite, others dove right into the action hopping aboard the bumper boats or starting up a round of mini golf. Other options that their pass allowed included a $6 arcade card, some of their famous homemade ice cream and a 9-hole round of Pitch and Putt. As the day wore on, more campers headed to the air-conditioned arcade or cooled themselves off by enjoying a delicious frappe or ice cream cone.The only disappointing aspect of the trip was that Avoda had only a few hours there before heading back for dinner; still, a good time was most certainly had by all.

FIELD TRIPS being shaken awake early in the morning, adventurous campers gathered food and other supplies for the long journey ahead of them. After packing layers and extra socks (thanks Leon) and taking a 2-hour bus ride, the climbers finally arrived at the America’s most climbed mountain.

Fortunately, the path was not as slippery as thought and everyone made it up the rocks in one piece. On the summit we viewed the surrounding are with a sense of accomplishment, then slid and clambered back down the mountain. Exhausted we ended the day with our traditional allyou-can-eat meal at Fire and Ice. Well fed and tired everyone drove back to camp, culminating a fun and successful trip.

CORNERSTONE

A new program was

created this summer thanks to the seven staff members from the ’08 14 who attended the Cornerstone fellowship workshop in Waynesboro, PA. There they learned different ways to incorporate Judaism into daily camp life. The cornerstone fellows as they are now known designed Menche Mentionables which allows counselors, CITs, the opportunity to nominate campers for 1(extraordinaty acts of citizenship aka “well dones”, and 2) outstanding achievements of athleticism aka “done wells”. There were many nominations in this, the program’s pilot summer. Unfortunately only a few could make it into the Avodian. Here 64 are the standouts

from this summer’s Menche Mentionables.

Well Dones After a long day and staff football, Danny Golov, Jared Sklar, and Jonah Litchman volunteered to clean up the whole field after visiting day by themselvs, a very daunting task.

Danny Golov found 300 dollars on the field and, without a moment’s hesitation, sought out the proper owner and was able to return the sum total in tact. He accepted only a thank you and a shake of the hand as compensation.

Done Wells Aaron Shuman himself scored 10 goals in a single league game, catapulting his

team to victory.

Ethan Shifman turned two double plays in a highly competitive sophomore athletics period, wowing his bunkmates and the instructors.

Squirrel executed his patented slam dunk shot at the buzzer to win a league basketball game. This was one of many dunks by Squirrel this season.

hen third period strolls around all the freshman and sophomores know what time it is.

They wait anxiously for Jason or me to announce the schedule for the day, and some scream enthusiastically when they are playing one of their premier sports while others may not be happy about the schedule.

But league as usual was ultra competitive this year led by a tremendous group of cits who coached and led their teams better than we could have hoped.

Teams this year were themed from iPhone apps and they were very creative. A few fan favorites were flashlight, pocket gods and twitter. Twitter was certainly one of the most dominant teams I have ever seen in fr/so league and they have made it all the way to the finals.

Overall a great year in league with some athletic additions to the teams which raised the level of competition to a new bar. Thank you for a good competitive summer good work to all the coaches and players and the best commissioners eva.

Junior/Senior

League was exciting before the season even started. Many counselors wanted to be coaches but were unsure if they would be given a team. Commissioned by Scott Rosen, Brendan Hefter, and Eric Halperin, the league was finalized.

With the theme of throwback sports teams, there were some interesting team names out there. It all made for a great summer of league competition.

The playoff race was closer than it has been in years, which made for a very exciting close to the season.

A couple of juniors in Dan Chafetz and Alex Frank played big in the absence of their one pick, Benji Satloff. Sam Frank’s team lead by Drew Lukoff and 2 pairs of brothers in the Ragins and Lefkowitzes finished the regular season in first. Players, coaches, and refs, thanks for a great season. Congrats to all the winners.

It was a cool, brisk morning. After a few days of hearing Matthew Nannis and Ethan Davis scream at Joshua Plotkin for driving the red truck during inappropriate times, the campers were pleasantly surprised to hear the horn of the red truck wake them up at 6:45 am. On the back of the truck was Dan Friedman with a flag that read “DW”, and Sam Frank shooting off fireworks.

The campers erupted off of their porches with excitement as they rushed towards the center of the field screaming in joy. After Joshua Plotkin read the teams, all of the campers ran to PGD’s path. The blue team was on the lodge side of the path, and the white team was on the side next to Mr. Davis’s cabin.

The four captains, Drew Lukoff, Zee Elkinson, Sam Roth, and Aaron Shuman, walked down the path first. Drew and Zee ran to the blue side of the path, while Sam and Aaron went towards the

white side. After that, the four aides, followed by the 5 lieutenats proceeded down the path, one by one. After Zack Blackman and Brendan Hefter, the 1st lieutenants for the Blue Tribe and White Ruckus, respectively, announced the team names, the two Generals, Eddie Bernson for blue and Jake Dennis for white, ran down the path full of excitement.

Desert War began after a quick breakfast and organization in each teams respective area. Both sides were informed about the new rule change, which was an extra flag on each side! The war began with white’s Drew Stein scoring a quick flag, which was soon followed up by Max Goldfarb throwing the 14 flag to Isaac Goldman. Unlike past years where desert war was filled with strategy and boredom, everyone could tell this year was going to be a war to be remembered.

At the end of the first quarter, white was leading, but blue still felt motivated and

competitive. At the start of the second quarter, white scored an onslaught of flags, led by Drew Stein, and Kastiya Reagan scoring the ever elusive Dessi.

By the end of the first half, white was up by upwards of 5 flags, and had the lake in sight. After lunch, blue came out with a new approach and strategy, and thanks to the staff and Benji Satloff’s speech, came out re-energized and motivated as ever. Blue outscored white 6-0 in the third quarter, thanks to 3 beach flags from Captain Zee Elkinson, and constant commotion thanks to fellow Captain Drew Lukoff and Max Goldfarb. With the third quarter over, blue had the lead and the will to win. The fourth quarter was a hectic, chaotic mess, but Jonathan Cohen and Alex Frank’s flags proved not enough, and with a final score of 30-28, blue jumped into the lake after a desert war for the ages.

YEARS! Two five year plans done. Who would have ever thought? I have truly enjoyed every bit of it. This summer has truly been a busy one. It all started two months ago with opening day, which only seems like yesterday.

Time sure flies here at AVODA, more or so than anywhere else.

Every memory this summer is still so vivid and I find myself trying to hold on to each and everyone.

Over the years the memories have faded, but the place I have come to call home in the summer will provide that glimpse of the past.

As this summer comes to an end, I look forward to what the summer of 2012 may bring. Before I get there, I want to thank a few people for the summer of 2012.

Bunk 1 - You guys were AWESOME! I was glad to have you guys as campers. I enjoyed all the great times together.

Dan - You were a great Co to have in the bunk. It wasn’t perfect, but we made it. Thank you for all your help.

and Color War breaks in just a few hours. I can’t believe how fast this summer has flown by, but at the same time I feel like I have accomplished so much in only a couple of months.

Starting off the summer with two weeks in Israel alongside most of my ‘08 brothers was such an amazing experience, and the transition to camp was extremely smooth.

Last fall, I was sitting with Jake Dennis in an Econ class at UMass when he asked me if I had ever thought about returning to Avoda after all of my time away from camp. I really hadn’t considered coming back much at all at that point in time, but that question really got me thinking about what I had been missing over the last few summers. That thought turned into a serious consideration throughout the winter and spring, and here I am 10 months later, writing my staff profile. I want to thank the admin and everybody at Avoda for having me back at camp this year, I really appreciate that all of you made me feel as if I never left. Everybody keep “bein’ yaself” because you guys are what makes this place so special.

My time away from Avoda really helped me see clearly how magical this place is, and while I can’t predict my future here, I promise to return to camp for as long as I feasibly can.

Bunk 1 – You guys were a great group of kids to have this summer. All of you are crazy and special in your own way, and I know you’ll grow into an awesome group of Avodians. Leon, it was a lot of fun being your co this year. We had a lot on our plates, but through it all, you really made it easy

for me to grow into a quality S.C. 08 – You guys are my best friends, and I wouldn’t have been at camp this year if you guys weren’t going be around. We made this summer great and definitely had our fun while doing it. Whether we’re chillin’ at Avoda North during the off-season or being stuck at Cornerstone, we always know how to enjoy ourselves and make the most of any situation. All of you better be back to do it again even harder next year.

Israel Crew – We’ve had a hell of a summer boys, and I can’t believe it’s already coming to a close. We got it started at the beginning of June and haven’t looked back since. I think I can speak for all of us when I say Israel helped us put things in perspective and become better counselors, which turned into a major contribution to the camp season, etcetera, etcetera...

To all of the younger guys reading this, I highly recommend participating in the Avoda Israel trip. I promise that you and your 14 will have the time of your life.

07 – It’s weird how two rival 14’s from back in the day became some of the closest two age groups on staff. I love kickin’ it with you guys and even though your numbers were small this year, your presence and influence were huge on staff. If this really is the end of the road for you guys, I’m pumped that I got in a year on staff with all of you. Hope to be seeing you dudes at the Zoo. JC’s – You guys were rad these last two months. You did everything that was asked of you, and all of you

brought something great to staff. I look forward to working with you if I’m back next summer.

Team Avoda – Thanks for all your hard work this year. I know we threw a lot at you in the days leading up to the Avoda tournament, but you took it all in and put in the hard work when you needed to. You guys killed it on game day, and look where we ended up. Shouts to AK and Ethan too, thanks for bringing me aboard.

Blue Tribe: Those last three minutes were some of the most chaotic minutes of my life but we came out on top and it was easily the best desert war I have ever been a part of. You were always there to help out in the bunk, which was nice to have. I’ve gotten to know you a lot better, and we will definitely be chillin next summer for sure.

All year long I had been waiting for

this summer. Traveling to the Holy Land of Israel for two weeks with my 14, to then go to my second home, I couldn’t have asked for a better start to a summer. It was an unforgettable experience going to Israel, and seeing the cultural diversity, as well as adding onto the good times and memories with my boys. We all had the trip of a lifetime, and I can’t wait until we go again. While in Israel, we talked about setting goals for the summer, and how we could make this summer better then past summers. I would say we reached our goals and worked harder, resulting in an epic summer. Although it feels like this one has gone by faster than any other, this summer was the best since I’ve been on staff. I hope to see all of you back home in ten months. This has been the chilliest summer of all my years at this great place, I can only imagine how much more lifted of a time we could have if we all come back for one more. Avoda is my home forever, and that will never change…ever.

Aaron Rubin – THE ALMOND!!!

Whaddup dude, it was great time having you as my co this summer. I’m not going to lie, I didn’t know what to expect with having you as my co, and you exceeded my expectations. We did well with Bunk 3, and I feel like we taught all of them how

Bunk 3 – You guys are a great group of kids. This was my second time in Bunk 3, and you guys definitely topped the first one. Kleinmann, Nate, and Caden, you guys have been leaders in the bunk and I’m happy that you three stayed the whole summer. Puccio, I remember during the first week of camp when you told me you only wanted to stay two weeks instead of a month because you weren’t having fun. I’m happy you realized how great of a place this is, and stayed the whole summer. ’08 14 – Wow, I have a lot to say in this shout out, but don’t know how to put it into words. Ever since the Israel trip we have bonded to become true brothers.We set our goals in Israel and went above and beyond accomplishing them. You guys are what make my summer so great, and I couldn’t come back without you all by my side. I think we all got one left in the tank. Nothing would make me happier than seeing all of us back next summer. ’07 14 – I enjoyed getting to lead camp with you four, as well as get to know you better. I really hope you guys can make it back next summer for one more.

Deuce – What can I say; you were my boy this summer. We sure kicked it a lot straight chillin, whether it was in the Camry or the Maxima, lappin’ the lake pre Tispaquin Street detour, cracking jokes and reflecting on the

summer as it went by, it was always a good time. I hope you have a great time at UMass and I will definitely be down to visit the crew.

AK – My boy since day one, we continued to add on to the good times of where we left off last summer.

This is my seventh year at Avoda

and I like it very much. To think that after so many years I am finally on staff is crazy. As a camper I looked up to my counselors with the utmost respect, and wished that one day I could be like them, and that moment is now here.This has been far and away the best summer I have ever had at camp.

Being on staff with my fellow fourteeners has been amazing. It is unbelievable that camp is almost over. I have been here for so long yet it feels like I just made that first trip down Gibbs Road yesterday.

Well, that’s about it for all of the clichés and now time for some shout-outs.

George: you have been my best friend for over 11 years. I am so glad you decided to come back this summer. You better come back next year, it only gets better.

Ben: I can’t imagine what my life would be like if you never came to Avoda. Being on staff with you was an awesome experience and you better visit a lot next summer.

Admin: thank you all so much for the opportunity to come back to this amazing place. If it wasn’t for you guys this camp would not be able to run, so for that I thank you.

08 – I love you guys. Compared to past summers, I think were hilarious—more hilarious than we ever have been. The 12 of us are a bunch of characters and can’t be contained by anyone, especially some Jews from New Paltz. Next summer is unsure for most of us, but I know the mighty 08 will have a strong presence here next summer.

07- Hey! Funny how we used to hate each other back in the day.

Now im glad to say we’re all pretty tight. You’re all characters, and I’m gonna miss you all as if you were in my fourteen.

Ruckus – I don’t think I’ll ever see a DW that insane again.

Unfortunately we didn’t get to jump in the lake, but it was a hell of a story. Coming back in the 4th without Goff and Kostya, I was speechless.

Israel Crew – I grin as I’m typing just thinking of those wild 2 weeks. I could write pages about the times we had, I’ll just leave it at this: the memories we shared were truly the best I’ve ever had. I miss them, but I know if we were there any longer, I would’ve lost everything and broke a more stuff.

Staff – what a summer, best I’ve been here for. Camp is back and it is here to stay. Stay in touch this off season.

This past summer at camp has

been one of the most exciting and enjoyable summers I have ever experienced. In all honesty I never thought I would make it to staff but each year I couldn’t resist coming back to Avoda. It’s been a great summer for everyone and I still cannot believe that it’s already coming to an end. Hopefully I’ll be back next year to pick up where I left off and have another amazing summer.

2K10: I was so pumped when I found out the crew that was coming back this year. Bunk 4: You guys have definitely been a memorable group kids both first and second month. I was positive that I wasn’t going

to come back this summer, but in the end I decided that it was the right thing to do, a decision that I feel like I have had to make for the past two summers. Coming back this summer was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Everyday I’ve been here I’m been struck by how much everyday is better than the last. I guess I’ve ruled out coming back two summers in a row, so this time I won’t be prematurely ruling anything out in my profile. Here’s to hoping that the next summer brings something just as great as this one.

Orlando Rage-I know that we weren’t as good as I promised we’d be, but getting to coach you all has been a great experience.

Getting to know you as athletes and Avodians has been great.

Blue Tribe-Getting to be a part of Desert War this year was the highlight of my summer. I know I have told a lot of you guys the same thing, but I wanted to thank you so much for providing me once again with a trip to the lake.

I don’t think I could ever thank you enough.

07-I was going to give you individual shout outs, but I didn’t have the time or space. This was it. We’d been talking about a summer like this for a long time. It’s been a

long road since Bunk 14. We’ve had a lot of ups and downs. We still have a lot of days, years, ahead of us. You know what you all mean to me.

Bunk 5A-Two years in a row? This year has been better than the last, which was already hard to top. It’s been great to see you all grow in to leaders in your division.

Mitch-This was a great summer in bunk 5A, I was really excited to have you as my Co this summer and you did not disappoint. We killed it this summer-good luck with your Senior year, hopefully I’ll be seeing you around.

2012 Bunk 14-It’s been great hanging out with you guys this summer. I know that I ran a boring morning for you guys but I had a great time hanging out with you all. You guys are why I keep coming back to camp. I know that you will stand out as the years go on. Camp needs guys like you.

Executive Pink-As I lay in the Weight Room smelling terrible and sleeping through breakfast, I realize just how great and how terrible camp can sometimes be.

summer at Camp Avoda, and it is safe to say it has been the most enjoyable.

Getting closer with not only my bunk fourteen but the older staff members was a great experience.

Being a bunk counselor is a big step from being a CIT and an even bigger one than being a camper. But despite the leaps, I have accepted the challenge with open arms. This summer I have spent most of my time down at the waterfront doing just about everything. Teaching swim classes and driving ski boats are just a few tasks I was assigned to do. th

Shout-Outs: Spencer Kaye- You have been a great co in and outside the bunk. I am glad that I was paired up with you for my first year on staff. You taught me loads about being a counselor and about things down at the waterfront. It’s been real dude.

away, I cannot believe how quickly this summer has gone by. It only seems like yesterday when I first drove down Gibbs road this summer on May 29th, 2012, when pre pre started. As I have continued to move up on staff throughout the past few summers, I have learned, unfortunately, that the summers fly by faster and faster.

It is also unfortunate that there is nothing anyone can do about that fact.Throughout this past summer, I tried to make it last as long as it can, and this summer has been one of the best ones that I can remember.

I am proud to say I was a part of the 2012 staff that made this summer great.

Camp Avoda is truly a special place. I cannot put into words how much this place means to me. Avoda is more than a summer camp for jewish boys.

Avoda is a brotherhood, a place that allows you to be yourself and grow into the man that you want to be. The bonds that are formed here are so strong. My closest friends are the friends that I made here when I was a camper and as a staff member. I know that I would not be the man I am today if I never knew about Camp Avoda.

Bunk 5b- This summer has been awesome. Once I found out that I had you guys again after being your counselor in bunk 2, 2010, I was so excited for the summer to begin. To no surprise, you all were great campers. Continue to come back for many years, you all are true avodians.

Fogel- You were a great co this year, I am glad that we had the opportunity to work together, co-counselors and co-coaches.

You are a smart kid, and a great leader and coach. Good luck with senior year.

Junior Hoops- Once I saw this team after the first try out, I knew there was something special about you guys.

With all your hardwork and skill, Plotty,

Watman, Fogel, and I knew there were high expectations set for this team.You all accomplished something I have never seen at Avoda, ever. We won every tournament we played, 4-0. You guys are awesome, and it is an honor to say I was one of the coaches of the 2012 Junior Hoops team.

Plotkin- We did it! Its been quite the run but this season was incredible. I’m glad we got to taste the lake together and that you got your tourney win.

Blue Tribe- Eddie, Blackman, Joco, Spencer, Watman, Jake, Robbie, Drew, and Zee. What a day. This was one of the greatest Desert Wars I have been apart of, and our team was incredible. I am so happy that I had the opportunity to be a part of this team. TRIBE!! Drew and Zee- Congratulations, you two were awesome captains, and unstoppable on the field.

Blue Gators- Edward, Blackmane, Casey Jones, AnchorMAN, SwampMAN, crocodile, Dundee, Captain Benji SatloffThere is something special about this team. With only 12 hours until picks, I am confident we will have a great week.

2008 14- Senior staff boys. We all have stepped it up this summer and are influencing camp more than ever. You’re all my brothers. I cannot believe that we still have 12 of us here as 2nd year s.c.’s.

Eddie- I’m glad that we’ve grown a lot closer this year. You are the man. I can’t thank you enough for the opportunities that you have given me this summer. Pre pre was awesome, and the rest of the summer too. I’ll try to visit the PALACE AT SIGMA NU.

Spencer- Bunk cousins! Spending nearly every day with each other has been a highlight of my summer. I’m happy that we were just down the hall from each other, you are one of my closest friends here.

Leon- I know you get a lot of criticism from everyone, but you really are the hardest working counselor/ADMIN. Working on the avodian has been a great experience.

oming into this summer, I didn’t know what to expect as a counselor.

But I certainly didn’t expect one of my most memorable summers, let alone one of the most memorable in Avoda history. Between Desert War and the Avoda Tourney, I can’t imagine Color War being anything short of amazing. Like most summers, this one has flown by too quickly. As you get older, it becomes clear that it isn’t as easy as you once thought it was to keep coming back year after year.This is not my last year, I can say that for sure, but being a counselor means that I’m on the final stretch of my career at Avoda. That being said, I definitely can’t miss my brother being in 14.

2K10 14: I wanted to be optimistic this past offseason, but I knew a lot of us weren’t returning. Even still, the remaining JC’s have had a hell of a year and it was awesome having a solid group of guys back. I hope that as many of you guys come back as possible because we can’t afford to lose any more than we already have.

You guys are my brothers and this year on staff we’ve become closer as a 14 than ever. Look forward to many more years with you all because we’re sticking together no matter what.

Bunk 5B: I was psyched when I heard that I had this group of kids this year because you guys were definitely one of the best bunks in camp. After having most of you as a CIT last year, it was a privilege to be your counselor and see you guys lead the freshman/sophomore division.

Harrison, Jake, and Zac, you guys helped make first month awesome, but do everything you can to come back two months next year because it really is worth it. Paul, Ethan, Spenser, Gabe, Nate, and Wigon, you guys are all veterans and did a great job helping Zack fit into camp.

Stick together because you guys are lucky that you’ve been together so long. For my first year on staff, I was lucky to have an amazing bunch of campers.

Brett: Keep smiling because your years at Avoda are only going to get better and better as you get closer to 14. There is no way that I could ever miss seeing you lead the camp in two years. Experience everything you can at this camp and have no regrets, then you’ll truly appreciate everything this camp has to offer. I could not imagine being at this camp without you because I know that you share the same love for this place that I do. Never forget to have fun and good luck in Color War! Joey: I couldn’t have asked for a better co this year. Thank you for helping me out in my first year on staff. I learned a lot and hope to use it in my future years at camp.We had some good times in bunk 5B and it was also pretty awesome bringing in the four trophies with you for

Jr. Hoops: Perfection. We told you guys all summer long that this team was something special. There was never a doubt in my mind that we weren’t going to go 4-0 this season.

But in the Avoda Tourney, when you guys faced your first serious contender and first loss, you guys bounced back and destroyed. Frank and Chafetz, you both lead this team as strong captains and played your roles perfectly for the team.

There’s nothing like winning the Avoda Tourney, and beating Crest by56. Never forget this team and its domination as one of the best Jr. Hoops Avoda has ever seen.

Plotty and Watman: It was a privilege coaching with you guys this year. Thanks Plotty for giving me the opportunity to coach under you, I learned a lot and hope to keep the team going strong next year. You truly deserved the Avoda Tourney win and it was awesome to be there alongside with you. Watty, congrats on getting into CW, and let’s take another Jr. Hoops trophy next year.

Coming into this summer, I did

not know what to expect. The previous summer was exceptional, but I couldn’t say that it was your expected awesome Avodian experience. Yet as I sit here less than a day before Color War breaks, I have never been so in love with this place. Since our 2k8 Birthright trip to Israel, Summer 2012 has been by far and away the best one yet.The day to day Avoda has been amazing, desert war was the greatest its ever been, and a sweep at the Avoda tourney?!

Unheard of. With Color War only hours away, I am sure it will be incredible. I cannot say for sure that I plan on coming back next year, but I know that whatever ends up happening, Avoda will always be in my mind, summer – fall – winter – spring. One love.

08’ – another summer has gone by and it SUCKS knowing another 10 months has to go by without all of us together. Your all my brothers and I feel the most at home with all of you. We flow like no other, and although we REALLY crose the line sometimes, when were together we really show our true colors. Love you boys.

07’ – I always laugh when I think of our relationship when we were campers.We hated each other and never thought we’d ever get along.

Nowadays consists of kickin it, chillin, and effin around like Avoda brothers should.Y’all are my boys.

JC’s – finally we got some competent little pledges to keep the lizounge clean. I didn’t really know many of you before this year, but now you guys are truly part of staff and I can’t wait for your future.

Super Senior staff – You guys are crazy and I love livin’ it up with all of you. Hopefully we’ll be hanging in the offseason. You guys rep the classic Avoda and this place needs people like you.

Bunk 6A – You guys are a buncha characters and made my summer easy and very fun. I can’t wait to see you grow into a strong 14.

Identity Fest Crew – What a WOMP fest it was. Raging was exceptional. Rolling around was EPIC. Israel fellas – WHATTA TRIP. No words to describe. Awesome.

White Ruckus – That was the craziest day ever. Just thinking about it gives me the chills. We may have not been the lake, but we were the best team out there in my mind. For Jake, that was dope, you’re my boy and being in the room with you was awesome, can’t wait for the upcoming week.

To Jason, Igor, and AK, that was 08’ tearin it up. I’m so proud of us. Fogel, you’re the man, an exceptional JC with a bright future.

This was my first bunk as a staff member and I will always remember the great summer I had with you guys.

Summer 2012 flew by and it was

an amazing one. My first summer on staff was unbelievable and there is no doubt that I will want to work at Avoda next summer.

Working at Avoda, I get to give back to Camp, a place that I have grown up at since I was in Bunk 3, and I get to kick with my best friends all summer. There is no better job in the world.This entire summer was great. That was the most exciting Desert War I had ever seen and so far Color War is intense. I love Avoda and hope that next summer will be even better.

2k10 14: You are all my brothers and I couldn’t imagine a summer without you guys. If all ten of us can be back next summer, I know that summer 2k13 will be crazy. JC year with you guys was unforgettable because I got to do it with my fourteen. I am already pumped to be SC’s with you all next summer.

George and Matt, we did work this summer on the rock wall and of course kicked it a lot too, ropes wouldn’t be the same without you two. Miklos, it was fun being with you last cycle, your’re a daredevil when you climb. And of course we could not have completed our summer without our brilliant advisor, Benny Bershad. I would like to start my profile

by saying this has been by far and away my favorite and most memorable summer at the place I love. I don’t think there has been so much hype going into a summer that I could remember. Maybe it was just being at Umass surrounded by Ben Rubin, Kassif, Robbie, and rooming with Dan, but I had never talked about camp so much before the summer had started. Late nights chilling at robbies or chill seshes in my room conversations always led back to one place. It had been determined that Joco Jason and myself would be head coaches for the Senior Hoops team and we had ideas brewing for the team in early winter.

One of the other greatest things about this past off season was having joco finally up in the Northeast. Him and Deuce had been chillin a whole lot but it was the first time that we were able to hang with him and not just call him in and tell him about the fun we were having.

After all this talk leading to the start of the summer after the unreal Israel trip, the summer was upon us.

I was excited when I found out that Brendan and me would be in the same cabin again with a couple JC’s, and to be quite honest (sorry Greg) I did not know who the hell you were. I knew you were really fast and liked running and that was it. But after this summer, with the bunk that we had, I consider you one of my closest friends at Avoda.

Bunk 6B- I didn’t really know much about you guys going into the summer but you were a great bunk. Romo you need to learn how to brush your teeth in a timely fashion. Syl I hope this Avoda experience was one that will change your life and I hope you and the rest of the bunk come back for many years

to come. Greg you were a great co lets play some golf in the off-season.

Senior Hoops- WOW. The most unbelievable tournament that I have ever been a part of in any sport of any team I have ever been a part of. After the beginning of the season we had losing in the bournedale tourney and getting smoked in the bournedale meet I was unsure that this team had in us to win the Avoda Tourney. Losing to Crest in the first round we knew it was going to be a long day and the one thing you guys did was never die, you kept fighting till the very end. That second game versus Crest was the single most amazing game ever. Remember this boys we were down 20-1. Tied it in the fourth and won in overtime. Robbie holy shit were you unreal, I cant believe you hit those threes. I always knew you were a great 3 point shooter because you always wanted to challenge me in contests but you legit never shot one three during any practice or scrimmage and you stepped up and knocked down 2 clutch threes. All the work was worth it in the end to be swimming with you boys lets go for the three-peat next year fellas.

White Ruckus- I still have a tough time believing that I had the privilege to be a Desert War General. Brendan I was so happy that you were my first and that we had the staff that we had. A lot of people say it after desert war or color war that they would do it exactly the same given a second chance. Well this is the first time that I really mean that.

I would not change a thing. From the staff to negotiations to every single pick, I WOULD NOT CHANGE A SINGLE THING. We were an amazing team, Roth, Shaggy you guys led this team

better than any of us had hoped for.This team and this war was unforgettable, I hope this brought back the good days of desert war and not the sitting around chess like war. This was crazy and I’m excited for future wars, Ruckus never forget to cause a little Ruckus here and there.

White Mercenaries- Sitting here in my kitchen writing our profiles with Plotty Kassif and Ben, with the Hefters on their way I can not be any happier with our team. Although for the first time the ’08 is split up I love the group that we have to work with and I just cant wait for this week to get under way and make this an unforgettable war. Ben thank you for giving me the opportunity to be a first again and I know that with the hard work we have put in so far and will continue to put in will be worth it in the end.

During

my time away from camp I was uncertain if I wanted to return. I continued to delay my decision until the very last minute.

I was unsure of what was to come as a member of staff, and I wasn’t positive that I wanted to leave my friends at home. When I had to make a final decision I talked to many of the other kids in my fourteen and we all realized that we were in very similar positions: everyone wanted to come back,but thought there were opportunities at home as well. While some of us decided it was not a good decision for them to return, the rest of us decided we could not picture the summer without coming back to camp. We agreed that without camp we would have a summer that lacks excitement and fun.

Despite everything that we were going to miss by returning to camp, the majority of us decided to come back.

Bunk 6B – I knew all of you last year when I was a CIT. However, it was awesome to get to know you all even better as your counselor. You guys have been a great bunk to have as my first year on

staff. I had a great time being your counselor. You guys have really become a close bunk throughout the summer and I hope you all continue to come back to camp as long as you can. We’ve had good time with Aba and Romano and more are going to come throughout the remainder of the summer. Syl, Waltzman, Romano, Dichter, and Robinson all added to making our bunk great during the first month, however you should all try to come back for the whole summer in the years to come.

Overall, I’m really grateful that I was able to be your counselor this summer.

2k10 14 – It was great to have another summer with you guys and it’s easy to say that this summer has been one of the bests. I’m very glad that all of you returned to camp this year. From patriots place to hanging out on out nights we’ve all had another good summer. It was great to have such a solid group of guys that did return and we all definitely became a lot closer as a 14 and I’m sure we will grow even closer in the future years.You guys are my brothers and I hope we can have a few more summers together.

JD – I really enjoyed being your co this summer. I appreciate you teaching me how to be a good counselor and the ropes to being on staff. I’ve learned a lot from you this year. Thanks for helping me

efore this summer started, I was 91.4 percent sure I was not going to be back this summer. Although last summer was incredible, I had an athletic commitment that I was committed to accomplishing that would not allow me to return.That was playing college soccer that I had been training for and would need to keep training for all summer. Unfortunately, that fell through. However, it opened up a door for me to actually come back and enjoy the best summer that I could possibly imagine at Avoda with my brothers. I realize now, no matter what other commitment I may have, nothing beats a summer with my Avoda stunna brothas. This summer started high and only got more lifted.

It was without doubt 2 months I’ll never forget. Everyday Avoda livin, chillin nothing but mac millin. Living Avoda life is the best way to live. No matter where I am or when, come summer time, I’m straight Avoda affiliated. Whatever happens in my life and whatever position that may put me in, I can always close my eyes and think about Avoda. When I open em everything’s all good. I love this place.

Whenever I hear Avoda, nothing but a fatty smile appears on my face.

Tilly (from Philly): This right here be my main man. Ever since day 1 of Pre camp weez be the best Co duo reppin this turf. You came into this summer lifted and only shifted to a higher element bra. You fit right in my brotha. You know I got your back the most man. Nothing but good times with this one. You really proved to be a great counselor this summer guy.

We be livin straight mac millin kid. Lift central. Co’s for life. You need some of that AK I’m there mayn. Kill it this season on that Needham ground. You got this. Weel be chillin Scotty Piffin.

Bunk 7: You lil rascals killed it this summer. You all were great and a pleasure to have in the bunk.

Hopefully we can make history by winning Kosher Kabin 3 times in a row.

All of you kids are all great and have so many different talents individually.

Hope you guys had as fun a summer as I did. Keep coming back forever.

Team Avoda: We did it boys. 3 Peat champions. We had all the pressure on us to win and we came out undefeated! I am more proud of you guys than you will ever know.

Winning that tournament was the best feeling I’ve had this whole summer.

This team will NEVER be forgotten.

Congratulations once more. You guys are true champions. Just remember one thing. Once that jersey goes on, you’re MONSTERS!!

White Ruckus: I will never forget this team. Being your 4th lieutenant was one of the best experiences I have had at camp. You guys were perfect. I was honored to be a part of this team.

E

very year the decision whether to come back to camp for another summer keeps me up all night during the off-season.

This year I know will be different though, after experiencing this summer on staff I know there is no place in the world I will be next summer other than 23 Gibbs Rd. I have finally realized this summer that you cannot explain to anyone besides Avodians why it is so great to come back to an all boys Jewish summer camp year after year. The next time a friend from home asks me why I am going back for another summer I will finally be able to simply think back to all the great times I have had these past few months and answer, “You wouldn’t understand”. This summer has been life changing and so far I would not change any of it.

Bunk 7: You guys were all great this year. I have no complaints and couldn’t have asked for any better kids to have in my bunk.

Artie, you are one of the toughest kids I have ever met and thank you for winning me Kosher Cabin this year. Benji, the only thing that really

sums up the summer for you is just that you’re the man and you shouldn’t change anything about how you live your life. Eli, it was great to get to know you this year and have you in the bunk you are definitely one of, if not the all around coolest camper in camp.

To all my other campers, you guys will get your personal shout out when you come back for a full summer. I hope you guys all had as good of a summer as me. Cya next year. Also, Joco we missed you in the bunk this summer but you will always be our God Co. A (Scotty Piffin) K: Coming into this summer I was talking to Ben Rubin about whether or not to come back and at one point I said, “I would definitely come back if I knew AK would be my Co” and sure enough I came back and got to spend the best two months of my life living in Bunk 7 with you.

There is no one at camp I love to be around more than you, and I can honestly say without a doubt you are the funniest person I know.

Cant wait to visit you and Plotty at URI this year, I already know its gonna be a hella piffin queen la tiffin mac millin time. You showed me the ropes and took care of me this summer and I will always remember you for that. That’s all for now because I know there are many more good times to come with me and you.

Staff 2012: Thanks for all the great times this summer. I have learned

As my 16

summer at dear old A-V-O-D-A comes to a conclusion I find myself asking where has all the time gone. From coming here in 1996 as a Bunk 1er to being a Bunk 14er in 2004, and then working my way up the staff ladder this whole journey has been a trip. After my last summer in 2010 I thought my time at Avoda was over and I was content with how I ended it.

I had a job this summer and was going to do that until the fall, but luckily I learned that there was a spot open at Camp and jumped at the opportunity. It’s a weird feeling thinking that your Avoda career is over and then learning 3 weeks before the summer that you have one more year at this place. Avoda is a complex place to explain to people it’s much more than just a summer camp; it’s where I have learned how to be a man, how to live on my own, and how to interact with others. I have made some of my greatest friends at Avoda, people who I can see or talk to you and reminisce over summers past. If it wasn’t for Avoda I know that my experiences at school and working this past year out west would not have gone so smoothly.

There’s more that I would like to write, but as its breakfast on Day 3 of Color War my presence is needed elsewhere. I would like to end my profile saying how much I appreciate being back this summer and that it has been a blast, much thanks to everybody be easy, and see you all in 10 months. th

Bunk 8: You guys are a group of characters and it was a privilege to be your counselor. I’m stoked to be back in 2 years and watch you boys in 14 leading this camp.

Strach House: Thanks for everything, I know that I haven’t been around as much as I could be and I appreciate your help with everything. The Mansfield Connection has been strong this summer, good luck with school and be easy.

Avoda it’s been real. While my employment at Avoda is coming to an end, this place will always be a part of my life. Avoda be easy and see you on the flip side.

ell that was fun. Now let’s do it again. My 10th summer at this paradise is quickly coming to an end unfortunately. But without a single shroud of doubt I can say that my favorite summer was this one even though I missed the mornings. All those missed mornings have shown me just how much this place means to me.

Hopefully I’ll make it back for one more…I love you Avoda, don’t ever change.

2008 14- Down to 12 but still going strong. I’m glad that we made it back, couldn’t have asked for a better summer. Good luck dancing. Hope we see each other often and I’d like to see each one of us make it back for one more.

It’s August

7th. I’ve been here since May 29th. But it feels like the summer of 2011 never ended. The off season between summers ’11 and ’12 was different because that was the first year that I lived in Massachusetts and for the first time, I got to see Avodians constantly throughout the offseason. And everytime we got together, no matter where we were, it felt like camp. Whether it was at BC, at the Double Tree Hotel, at the Avalon, at Eddie’s, at the Hefter’s, at Plotty’s, at the Fortune Panda, at the Lotus Flower, at Jake’s, at URI, at UMASS, or even at Bonarroo. Because as much as we all love the camp, AVODA is something found in people. And I love these people. And I love all of you. And I love Avoda.

of you ready to move on, good luck in everything you do and we’ll still see each other often. But I do want to come back in 2013, and I know a lot you want to come back too. So let’s do it. Let’s have one more summer to look forward to together, and let’s go through this ride one last time. I love you all.

I cannot believe that the summer

is over in less than 2 weeks. It’s hard to believe that I have been at camp for 7 weeks already and that the day after camp I will begin football. I had been looking forward to this summer the second midyears were over and I realized that I was halfway home to camp. When I came to camp this summer I really did not know what to expect on the other side of camp because I had spent the last 9 years as a camper and CIT., but Avoda has always helped me when change has occurred and my fellow 14 and many older guys helped me throughout the process. Overall this summer was great and a lot was accomplished from great athletics periods to the best desert war that I have ever seen, to a color war that has great potential.

2k10 14 We ended CIT year with 21 and now down to 10. I feel that we have a great group of people that I can see coming back for the next few years. This year was the closest I have ever been with you guys and the times that we have

Wes I have enjoyed having you at camp the last 7 summers. But this 8th will be the best because you will be in 14. I have watched you grow and mature at camp the last 7 summers and I think that you are ready for the best summer of your life next year.

Bunk 9 What can I say, you guys are all a bunch of characters. Chafetz,Witty, Edry, Sklar, Jonah, Golov, Maron, Tomer, Ilan. I really enjoyed having you guys as my first campers as a counselor. Even though we hit a few roadblocks with several issues you guys always pulled it together and worked the issues out. I am really looking forward to seeing you guys as seniors and beginning to become leaders.

Joco I really enjoyed having you as a co this summer. You helped me be a better counselor and as a member of staff. I think we held down the fort very well and I think bunk 9 was an overall success. so im going on about 11 weeks here. I can safely say its been one of the craziest summers ive seen here.

So many good times have been had here this summer that its hard to see it go. Unfortunately it has to come to an end but I wont be sad when I go because its been one hell of a ride. th

Bunk 10 – In my 4 years on staff you guys were the best bunk ive had. I wish I was in more often because I really enjoyed hanging out with all of you. Your all great kids and great avodians and I look forward to watching you guys grow and become the leaders of this place.

Bunk 14 - Im sorry I didn’t get the chance to be your 14 counselor but I hoped I still showed you all a good time. You guys are some of my favorite kids in camp and I hope you all come back for as long as you can.

Blue Tribe – I cant thank you all enough for one of the best days ive had at camp.We hung together through the ups and downs and pulled out the victory, thank you.

Ben – At long last we finally got our chance to duel. Id definitely rather go with you than against you, It sucks so much to have to try not being friends for a week.

We’ve had so many good times here I cant believe we are nearing the end. No matter where we go from here your one of my best friends.

Spencer –We had a blast on the tribe im glad you were able to get that last win before we finished off. Im going to miss being around you all the time my friend, Good luck with Kenyon ill be around Newton a lot.

Eddie – My general, it was a pleasure to be able to work with you in these two wars and I think we did a damn good job. For a while now you have been on of my closest friends and its going to be very strange not being able to bullshit with you every day.

08 – you guys are my boys, I know I may annoy and get annoyed by you guys sometimes, you are all some of my closest friends and im glad we’ve come a long way since we were campers. This place is yours now and I have faith that you all will be back and running this place with efficiency and organization.

It’ hard to believe another summer on

the shores of lake tispaquin are coming to end. This summer has far and away been my best yet. Throughout the summer there were times when my mind would drift away camp and I’d become caught up in my fraternity stuff and wouldn’t enjoy myself.

However, after the first few regular days at camp I got into the swing of things and ever since then I’ve enjoyed every single moment. There are many people worthy of shout outs and here we go…

Bunk 10: It has been a pleasure being your counselor this summer. I was thrilled when I heard I was your counselor and you guys have not disappointed all summer. You’re all great kids and are the future of this camp.The 2014 14 reminds me a lot of my own and you guys will be running camp before you know it.

Blackman: It’s been great being cocounselors this summer, we definitely showed the kids a good time. Good Luck with Junior year at UCONN JR. Hoops: What a season! Since day one we talked about this team having something special and the capability to win every tournament we played in.

S o far so good. I can’t thank you guys enough for putting everything on the line during the Avoda Tournament. We faced

adversity in the finals verse Bournedale but after that we came out in the 2nd game and showed them what Avoda Hoops is all about and after 9 years I finally got the one thing I’d never one at Avoda. Chafetz and Frank, you guys are 2 great kids who have a long future of success at this camp, keep working hard and being the way you are.

White Mercenaries: I’m currently sitting at JD’s house thinking about how successful we’re going to be this upcoming week. Ben, JD, Jason, Kassiff, Brendan, Tisch, and Mike, I feel we have the better squad and have been working too hard not to win this war.

Soon enough we’ll be in the lake 2007 14: Eddie, Blackman, Ben, and Spencer, you guys have all become great friends and the camaraderie between our 14’s is one of a kind. Lets continue the good times in the off season, good luck with jr year.

The 2008 Bunk 14: I’m at somewhat of a loss for words as to what I want to say here. After last summer camp never ended, being with AK the entire year was incredible and being able to meet up with everyone while we were home was always a good time. Cornerstone rolled around and it was no doubt the worst 3 days of our lives but being able to spend the time together at it was something I’ll never forget. After that we went on the most incredible trip any of us have ever been on. Israel was crazy and everything we did was incredible.

Many jokes can be seen in the dot dots. And then this summer, I definitely wasn’t myself in the beginning, I had a lot on my mind and Avoda wasn’t my main focus. I really want to thank JD, Brendan and Jason for always asking

me how things we’re going and offering their help. It’s hard to believe that we only have 2 weeks left but I don’t know what life would be with out you guys, there isn’t a day in my life that goes by where I don’t think about the stuff we have done. We all have one more year left in us, we all know it, lets take next year and make it everything we want.

Igor: Nine years ago you opened the door for me to an incredible place.

You’ve been a great friend since the good old days at Temple Beth Am and I can’t thank you enough for all the good times and showing me what Avoda was all about. This summer was the summer

of risk. Risk everything; that’s my moto. Yet again, Camp Avoda we came and conquered. Good times had by all. As you all know, I am a morning man. I would like to say even though, I made it to 7 breakfasts, I made them count. But honestly, I am here to entertain, and entertainers need their rest.

I love Camp Avoda and when I am awake, I give 110% to this place, and suggest that you all do the same.

This summer couldn’t have been what it was with a lot of help from a lot of people, so here are some shout outs.

It’s now the day before Color War is going to start and I am just starting my profile. Nothing like waiting until the last minute. Like every year I have no idea what to write but here goes.

Back in the winter I was actually unsure whether or not I was going to be back at camp. As a broadcast journalism major I had to highly consider trying to get an internship this summer. It wasn’t necessary but it would have been beneficial. But I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t even apply for internships. I had to be back at Avoda for at least one more summer. I wasn’t ready to leave, and I’m still not.

This summer was amazing, arguably my best ever. It all started at Cornerstone. It was a great 4 days and three nights of hard work and we were able to bring back our own parts of it to Avoda. Cornerstone was followed by Israel.

Israel was far and away the best trip of my life. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to spend two weeks in the Holy Land with my best friends. I got to celebrate my birthday there with them and the experience as a whole was just so special. We got back from Israel and then just about a day later we were at pre-camp.

To say the summer flew by is an understatement. I can’t believe that I am going to be back at school in North Carolina two weeks from today. From the tennis courts down to the waterfront it was another great summer. Desert War was easily the best I’ve been a part of and I cannot wait until Color War starts.

Bunk 11- I know I gave you guys a lot of crap all summer but you really were an awesome bunk. You’ve been at this place for a while and know how it runs. I know you’ll do a great job running this place next summer.

Deuce- When I heard you were going to be my co I couldn’t wait for the summer to begin. I knew we would be great together and we have been. Congrats on UMASS, you’ll do great there.

Sam- It’s great to have you around as a co. Best Special Events Coordinator this camp has ever seen.

Miklos and Spencer- Plain and simple, I wouldn’t be able to do this job without either of you. You guys help out so much with all the small crafts and have such knowledge for what you’re doing.

Minimal blue and white boat problems.

Minus some missing paddle board paddle problems it was another great summer for small crafts. Also here’s a little shout out Mitch for clutch gas runs.

White Ruckus- I said it earlier, it was the best Desert War we’ve all been a part of. JD, thanks for giving me a spot on the team. Working with you guys was awesome. If I did it all again I think we can agree we wouldn’t do a thing differently.

Shout out to the entire team, you guys made it memorable.

Blue Gators- Eddie, as soon as you and Blackman jumped on my bed that morning to tell me the news I was psyched. You’re great and a lot of fun to work with. Glad we’ve become close this year.Thanks for giving me the opportunity on this team. Blackman, It’s good to be with you and not against you this year.

You really know your stuff. Good times on the top of the obstacle course on July 4th. Joco, you were amazing last year and you’re even better this year. Really happy to be working with you again. Shout out to your taste in music too. Joey, I’ve been so impressed by you since we’ve started

all this. You’re an amazing worker. Keep it up. Watman, It’s good to be working with you now too. No more messing around by the water fountain. You’re going to do a lot with this stuff in the coming years.

Jake, you were awesome last year and I’m so happy to be with you again. You’ve been awesome. Harrison, it’s good to be working with you now, I know you’re going to kill it this week. Benji, I was so excited when I knew you’d be my captain.

You’re the man and will continue to be great this week. Here we go boys, picks are less than two hours away, can’t wait to do this week with you all.

2k7- It’s been great having you guys on staff with me all these years. I really feel like I’ve grown closer with all of you this summer. See you boys in the offseason.

2k8- I don’t even know where to start with you guys. You’re my best friends.

Spending time in Israel with the majority of you was an unreal experience. We ran the show. We really do things that we would never do around other people and it’s awesome. Great job running this place this summer. I love you guys.

Boris- It’s been awesome getting to spend these last two months with you at camp. We haven’t really been able to spend an extended amount of time together since you went to UVA. I know you’ve been killing it in New York.When I found out you would be in between jobs and back at camp this summer I knew for sure I’d be back. I couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to spend all this time with you. I’m so proud of you and know you’re going to excel at your new job as well. It’s been awesome with you at camp Scott.

Hopefully I can actually get to see you in New York this year. I love you bro.

Avoda, it’s been real. I’ve learned so many life lessons here and made best friends that I’ll have for the rest of my life. I feel so lucky to have been able to come here.

I love this place. If I can’t come back next summer, I’ll definitely visit. Avoda, thanks for everything.

As this summer comes to close

I look back and reflect on all the great times I had. Being on senior staff this summer I felt that rather than be lazy because I could get away with it, that I should step up and take more initiative in helping the camp run. One thing I realized this summer is that the older I got, the better the position I was in to help AVODA STRIVE. 2008 BUNK 14- you guys are my boys and always will be. We ran camp the way it’s supposed to be run. It has been so great that we were able to have so many back as second year S.C.’s. Unfortunately all great things must come to an end and the sad truth is that some of us won’t be able to come back next summer. If I am unable to come back next summer, I want you guys to know that I thank you for all the great memories over the years and that you guys will ALWAYS be my boys. WE ARE ’08 UGH ’07- im glad you guys came back this summer, I enjoyed pre pre and the regular season with you guys. You guys were great on Cw and Dw staff and excelled at your different departments.

Bunk 11- honestly guys, my summer would not nearly of been as good if it wasn’t for you.

of Avodians and I thank you for making my summer so enjoyable.

Eric “Igor” Halperin- One of my first friends in Bunk 2 and now my co in Bunk 11, wow has time flown. I cannot even begin to tell you how happy I was that were co’s, you are the model of what a counselor should be. You were great with the kids and you excelled in both CW’s and DW’s.

I enjoyed running Bunk 11 with you and I wish you the best at Elon and in your future Endeavors.

Sam- good job.

Gas Guzzlers- although I didn’t get to coach every game, the ones I did coach were mad fun and it’s all thanks to you guys.

Athletic Pyramid- awesome job this summer, we showed why Athletics always is and always will be on top.

Ethan- since we were on the Giants in 2003 and all the way through my 2nd year S.C. year, you have had my back. I cannot begin to tell you the amount of thanks and appreciation I have for the help, knowledge and advice you have given me over the years.

camp wouldn’t run the way it does, we’re all thankful to have you four around.

I

never thought I’d be sitting here in the position with the feeling that I’ve pretty much accomplished everything I’ve ever wanted to do at camp. I’ve had the opportunity to see both sides of color war as a head judge and general. I’m happy the changes we made in desert war benefited everyone and it ended up being one of the best any of us have ever seen. All in all I have no regrets about anything; the 13 years I’ve spent here have been amazing. There is literally nothing better than spending your summers at Avoda. I preach to all that as long as you can come back, do it.You can never say never, but it looks like my run at Avoda may be coming to an end. I’m glad I’ve had a chance to interact with so many different people in my years here. Hopefully I will have a lasting effect on the place that I love so much.

he funny thing about giving a bonfire speech is that you inevitably forget half the things you want to mention, and even if you don’t, no one remembers what you said 10 minutes later anyway.

Still, as a counselor or alumni, everyone who speaks does so with the intent of passing along one message or another about why Avoda is great. It’s probably easier to put into words than in a speech, so in my fourth, and what’s almost certainly my last profile here, I’ll do my best to sum up why Avoda means so much to me.

First, the obvious; if you’re fortunate enough to have made it to staff, think about how different your life would be if Avoda never entered it. When I think back on everything that’s happened to me in the last five years in particular, Avoda’s driven most of it whether it’s been college roommates, vacation plans, my job and to an extent, my career path.

Without a doubt though, the best part of Avoda is the friends I’ve made. I love my 14 to death, even those who aren’t still at camp. The older you get, the more you realize it isn’t just your 14 who can become some of your closest friends here. The ’07 and ’08 are very close, there are guys who I’ve been friends with from the ’03 and ’05 for years and the JCs, despite being JCs have fit right in on this staff.

No matter what anyone tells you, or how determined you are to try to make a little extra money, you will never have a job even close to as fun as being a counselor at Avoda. It’s not even close. Any alumni will tell you the same thing and it’s because it’s true. The best advice I can give to anyone is to listen to me and listen to others; do yourself a favor and stay here for as long as you realistically can. While that time may be up for me, I made it through four years on staff without ever having gone home on a day off. I made it through four years with friends coming back to staff and friends leaving. Each year was different; each year brought something new and

exciting, and each summer was one that I wouldn’t trade for anything.

I could write a book about Avoda, what it means to me, and why it’s so great, but I’m trying to meet this profile deadline at the same time as filling out rosters for CW and so I don’t have as much time to devote on my last profile as I would like. Even though I look forward to coming back as an alum and seeing campers turn into staff members and Avoda running the same way it always has, nothing will ever be the same as being a camper, CIT or staff member here. I’ll always remember the ridiculous times here.

To anyone I forget to give a shout-out to, I apologize in advance.You’re all awesome.

Bunk 12: You guys lived up to the entertainment everyone expected out of you this summer. I thoroughly enjoyed the late night pancakes and early morning breakfast sandwiches. I look forward to coming back and visiting and seeing you guys in 14.

Birdman: Because you’re asking me at declamation, I’ll give you a shoutout.

Pretty awesome having my little brother from ’07 as a camper 5 years later. You better be here for years.

Tricky: It was the next best thing hearing Eddie was moving out of 12 to 14 and that you were moving in. Definitely had a lot of fun in the bunk this summer and I’m sure I’ll see you in the offseason. ’07: What a long, strange trip it’s been. 21 to 4 in 5 years, and while it’d be awesome if we could make it back from one more, we had a hell of a ride. Our age group has a winning DW general, a winning CW general, athletic directors and waterfront directors. It would’ve been awesome to be 14 counselors with all of you, but we shouldn’t have any regrets. I love you all. ’08: We knew going into this summer what we were getting ourselves into, and everything worked out pretty damn well.

JD: Straight from kickin it at UMass to Avoda, it’s a pretty good transition if you ask me. Real glad to have you as my first in CW and I look forward to a great year ahead back in Amherst ’09: Thanks for everything this summer ’10: If you never got a proper thankyou, consider this one. There wasn’t a single JC who staff didn’t appreciate this summer. You guys were actually amazing, did everything asked, knew your place and hopefully had a blast. Please do everything you can to come back next summer and for many summers to come, you won’t regret it 2014 14: You guys are one of the deepest age groups in terms of athletes and personalities I’ve ever seen at camp.

Even if I don’t make it back in two years, I can’t wait to see you guys in 14. You’re going to be great.

Staff: We put together a great year for camp and we should be proud of that.

It was an awesome summer and I think everyone had a great time Aaron: I’m glad you’re planning on being back for a few years and I look forward to visiting you and seeing you do your best to fill my shoes.

Camp is paradise. It is a second home

full of best friends, rich traditions and priceless memories. It is also a vivid reality. The job of a camp counselor is immensely rewarding, but it is not without challenges.

The scope of issues a counselor must confront is broad and serious. It might include: · Supporting a homesick camper · Managing bunk chemistry, including bullying · Helping campers overcome psychological challenges: for example, learning disabilities, social complications and depression · Balancing parental pressures on a camper resulting from a split/ divorce · Dealing with illness / loss in a camper’s family · Facilitating a camper’s recovery from a serious injury · Helping a child achieve their goals, learn a new skill, conquer a fear, etc…

While our insulated camp environment helps, these issues remain very real. In response, the opportunity to make a positive difference in

the life of children is about as rewarding an experience one can achieve.

To appreciate further, camp’s authentic y, I am going to compare camp to my life outside 23 Gibbs Road. I just completed my first two years post-graduation living in New York City, working in the corporate world. I’ve been fortunate to encounter many genuine, helpful individuals whose friendship personally and professionally, will be invaluable. I’ve also encountered people who lack the moral foundation that I’ve come to expect from others. In this environment, there exist examples of excess, greed and selfishness. At the risk of generalizing, there are select people that try to be someone they not. These individuals might define their successes by the size of their bank account and not the quality of the relationships they build.

The situation I describe is not unique to New York City. These are salient issues across our world.

In contrast, camp offers a refreshing change of pace. Listening to the campers and counselors speak at a July 4th Bonfire, cheering our teams with intensity on the day of the Avoda Tournament and participating in a competitive Color War. Together, these are reminders about the value of morality: as demonstrated by humility, integrity and loyalty. The use of tradition to cultivate these principles, which are fundamental to our camp brotherhood, prepares us to contribute and succeed as Jewish leaders in the “real world”.

So while I may wake up in the morning to the sound of revile instead of my alarm clock, that doesn’t indicate the setting where I’ll be spending my day is any less significant. It too, is a demanding reality full of uncertainty and opportunity.

Fortunately, the values and lessons Avoda teaches help us navigate these camp challenges and by doing so, better prepare us to leave our mark on the limitless horizon ahead.

Recognitions I would like to thank Ken and Paul for providing me with the opportunity to

return. It has been a privilege to work with this administration and staff. I continue to be impressed with how well run camp is, certainly the smoothest in my 6 years on staff.

Eric: Thanks E. It’s been an amazing ride this summer. What an honor to be on staff with you. Love watching the ease with which you balance confidence and humility. Keep that foot on the gas pedal.

I have been at this place for 9 years now, and this summer has been the best one of them all. I really couldn’t have asked for a better summer. It’s that simple. There is nothing more to say about it. I got to witness the best desert war of all time, the best Avoda Tournament of all time, and hopefully Color War will live up to my expectations. Keep being great Avoda. Don’t ever change.

Q:When I got that call from you at midnight my time and we agreed to come back to camp I was thrilled.

One more summer. 14 counselors.

Going out the way we always dreamed of. A part of me worried that I would regret coming back.

Boy was I wrong. We made the right decision and had the best summer ever because of it. I love you kid. At the end of the summer I hope you look at me with those sweet eyes of yours and say “I’m leaving and I’m never coming back” and this time we can both mean it.

Bunk 14: you guys rule. From the 14 overnight and the island, to the bonfire, to just chilling in the bunk with you guys. You are all so close, and so tight knit, it reminds me of my age group when we were in 14.

I hope you all keep coming back and run this place on staff.

It was very apparent that staff happiness was a priority to you, and you were essential in making this summer an amazing one. I hope you return for many years to come. Forget Bournedale, they suck.

Choo-Choo’s: As of now we are

in the playoffs, and I couldn’t be happier with my team. You all know my successes with FRIENDS last year, and to have a good team this year really meant a lot to me.

I am excited to see how you boys perform in the post season, and hopefully we can come away with a championship.

White Mercenaries: When Ben Rubin came into the lounge after they had decided on staffs and shook my hand, I was eager to hear who was on our team. I knew it would be Ben and Jake, but I was shocked to learn we had both Hefters and Plotkin. I was in disbelief. There is a reason the Hefters have never worked together on staff, and that was apparent to me when we started working together. Our team has such a desire and a want to win.

We will not be denied. I know we have what it takes to win this war, and give the 14’ers a war they can be proud to call their own.

I

spent some time with Eric Edelman on the blue boat one night during color war. We sat there in the middle of the lake and gazed out at Avoda, brightly lit in the night. We got to talking about our past years, the history we’ve seen take place at Avoda. The one thing I couldn’t stop reminding myself of, is how this summer I’ve come full circle. I’ve been here for ten years now, and in those ten years I’ve experienced the full Avodian cycle from camper to bunk 14 counselor. Even only a few years ago, I would’ve never imagined myself ever making it this far.

My first year was 2003, I was a shy little 12 year old who didn’t even want to come to camp at first – I was forced by my parents, and they were making me go for a whole month too. I of course extended to the whole summer before long. One of my most vivid memories from this summer is the final moments of Desert War; this was the 96 camper year and since there were so few campers to defend the field they had to split it diagonally across. The whole game only one flag was scored on

each side, and we went all the way into double overtime. With only seven seconds left on the clock Nate Hammer scored the winning flag – and I was right there on the field to witness it.

It was my first time jumping into lake Tispaquin, and this was my first glimpse of what Avodian life was about.

The next summer I made a jump from bunk 4 all the way to bunk 8. 2004 was a big year for color war; I was on the dominating Blue Buccaneers, with Bubba as my general.The Summer after that I jumped all the way to Bunk 12, and then to the mighty Bunk 14 in 2006. I had finally made it to the end of the field. 14 was without a doubt the best. We were leaders of the camp. I was only a four-year 14er, but I loved Avoda, and I loved my 14. Unfortunately we would be cut in half by the time we hit C.I.T. year, with only 7 C.I.T.’s. But we would continue strong with 7 or 6 for the next few years. Staff was a whole different ball game. I made it all around the field, but now I had to start over; and what better place to start then my old cabin.

I was a bunk 3 J.C. in 2008, and my journey across the field would start again. If you asked me then, I never would’ve imagined making it all the way across once more.

This whole summer I’ve had a weird nostalgic feeling.

Maybe it’s that feeling you get

when you know you’ve completed all that you had to. Six years ago I was living it up in Bunk 14. I still cherish memories from those days. And now, I’m right back there, as the counselor. I’m in the position Matt Norcross was in 2006. I’m building the bonfire once more only I’m supervising it, I’m on the 14 overnight once more, except I’m running it. I’ve had all these memories with my Bunk 14 six years ago, and now it’s my turn to give my 14ers the same memories. Maybe it’s because I’m constantly faced with reminders that I’ve come full circle. One night, while talking to Ben Kassiff, I finally figured out what that feeling meant, what it meant to be at Avoda for the full run. Camp Avoda is a preview run-through of the span of the span of a lifetime.

You’ve got your years as a camper, your childhood, your C.I.T. year, which is your internship, then you slowly work your way up the ladder till you make it to Bunk 14 counselor. If you make it through all the stages it really does prepare you for life.

I’ve completed everything I had to here, that’s what I discovered this year. And now it’s time for me to go. I’m kind of rushing this because the Avodian’s due in half an hour so I’ll just say one thing. I love Avoda. I love you all.

It all started at Earth Fest. The mighty

07 14 knew it was our last summer at Camp Avoda, and knowing that we needed to make it the best summer of our lives. Historically, bunk 14 marks the peak of one’s rise as a camper, but the journey on staff is often overlooked.

My age group has had quite the journey since becoming junior counselors in 2009. It was a crazy time back then, and since then, staff was a rocky adventure filled with ups and downs in the following two years. This summer, the 07 reached the peak of staff, very synonymous with leading staff in bunk 14. When I found out that I was going to be a Bunk 14 counselor, it was truly surreal. I realized I was one of the leaders of staff, and therefore camp in general. In that position, I have truly loved the responsibilities that have gone with it.

Earth fest fed into pre-pre, which was a great experience. It is unbelievable that myself, Ben and Blackman have been, as well as the rest of the legendary pre-pre crew have been at camp for almost three months.

It has not completely hit me yet that this is realistically my last summer. Because of Fraternal responsibilities, as well as my drive to get ahead in the job market next summer, it is not likely that I return.

Avoda has brought me incredible joy and the truest bonds of friendship I have ever had. The memories at Avoda will last forever, and has prepared me so much for college and everything that lies ahead. I have almost completed my Avoda bucket list, having been a bunk 14 counselor, winning Desert War General, and hopefully, a winning Color War General. I love this place with all my heart, and I thank all the people I have connected with here for making me the man I am today.

Bunk 14- You guys killed it this summer.

After being your counselor last summer,

I knew you were a bunch of great kids, but great kids weren’t necessarily going to be enough to be great bunk 14ers.

Over this summer, I have noticed that every single one of you has become great Avodians, and in turn a very impressive bunk 14. You should all be so proud of what you have accomplished as the 2012 14. Drew and Benji, congratulations, you guys earned it.

Co’s: Good work. We are all very different, but had good chemistry and showed our kids the best bunk 14 summer possible.

Staff 2012: Coming into this summer we all had our speculations. We had had two summers in a row with different struggles internally and externally.

Because we came into this summer with such positivity, as well as some great events over the offseason (plotty’s, Jd’s), we knew we were going to be as united as a staff could be. We proved to admin and to all of camp how good of counselors we all are, and let’s be honest….the good times are back.

2k714: Nobody in the world are my brothers like you three are. I could have been asked bunk 14 and CIT year as to who would be back as super senior staff, and I guarantee I would have known it was going to be the four of us. It is very depressing that this is it for us, but we more than left our mark on this place, and we will always be the 07, let’s do it up alumni weekend next summer.

2k8: As I said during my bonfire speech, it is amazing how our two age groups have grown so close. We ran staff well together, and I really hope you guys all come back as 14 counselors to really see how camp culminates, and then you can truly leave with no regrets.

Waterfront Staff: We killed it this summer, the chillest staff at avoda were cooler than ever. At the same time, we were excellent swim instructors and work as a finely oiled machine in

terms of setting up and taking apart the waterfront this summer. I can’t wait to do our traditional boat ride on the last day.

Blue Tribe: What A DAY! Truly the best day and ending to a Desert War I’ve ever been through, and we ended up on top. You guys were such a great team, and performed so well, especially in that epic third quarter. Blackman, Cohen, Joey, Spencer, Watman, Tischler, Robby, Drew, and Zee, we led that team with pride. Always remember the Tribe!

Blue Gators: I can’t believe I am sitting here as a Color War General. Joining the club of the most varsity status of Avodians. Negotiations were awesome yesterday, getting the 1 pick in every division is certainly reassuring, as well as a triple in the senior division. Picks are in 10 hours, and I am so confident in the team we are about to put together.

here is no better feeling in the world than knowing that you have two months ahead of you at Avoda.

Knowing that law school lies ahead for me next year, I realized that I had an opportunity to make it back to Avoda for one last summer. I was very fortunate to have the privilege of coming back to camp for two more months before I reenter the real world and begin to pursue my dreams outside of this place.

When I say that it has been a privilege to come back to work here this summer I honestly mean that in every sense of the word. I first came to this place 13 summers ago, back in 1999. As a young camper it was hard to realize what exactly camp meant to me, and even more difficult to comprehend the transformative process that it would have on shaping me as a person throughout the years. Now, looking back on my camp career as it winds to a close 13 years later, I appreciate all that this place has given me. Whenever I think about all the influences that I have had in my life that have gotten me to the point that I am today, Camp Avoda stands right at the top.There is something special about this place that causes every camper to want to be a CIT, and every CIT to want to be a counselor.That something, whatever it is, is something that I hope Avoda will never lose.

My goal this summer was to attempt to give back to Camp what Camp has given to me. This place has been a positive life-changing experience for me, and it is my unwavering desire that it can be the same for countless others well into

the future. The sun always seems a little bit brighter in the morning, the grass always seems a little greener and the lake water always seems a more tolerable here. The four pillars of Camp that we all unite around are what make us unique: Tradition, Brotherhood, Leadership and Spirit. This place embodies everything that those words symbolize. When I am away from Camp the other ten months of the year I constantly find myself thinking about Avoda, and what it means to be an Avodian. Being an Avodian is a term that gets thrown around a lot at this place, but I truly believe that being an Avodian is something tangible, an attainable goal encompassing all of the values that we hold dear at this place. It has given me a standard to live up to, goals to achieve, and taught me what kind of person that I want to be in life.

There are not many things in life that have such a central importance to a person for 13 years. I am lucky that I was able to find one; a family called Camp Avoda. I will never forget this place, my brothers here, what it has meant to me, all of the positive impacts that it has had on me and what it means to bleed blue and white. I leave here one last time not upset that my time is ending, but feeling honored and lucky that I had one last chance to relive the two best months of my life.

Benny- You are my boy, and there was nothing better than hearing you would be coming back this summer. We’ve both grown up a lot over the years, and I appreciate all that you have done for me both here and in the real world.We were definitely lucky to be able to carry on the ’04 tradition this summer. Good luck with everything that you do, and never forget the times we had here and will have in the future.

Tricky- I’m glad you were able to make it back for another run this summer.

Running staff, DW and CW with you were good times. You add a lot to this place, and it is really going to miss you when your time ends.

Sam- You were the perfect Head of Chaos for the Summer of Risk. Keep being yourself and loving life. You have been great for Avoda (with or without being at breakfast), and you really do help build the character of this place.

Bubba- Thanks for all your support this summer helping me find my role. I can’t believe you’ve been here for 20 summers now. Avoda owes a lot to you for all your hard work, dedication and passion for this place.

Admin- Thank you guys for welcoming me to your side this summer. Last summer I got my feet wet, but I truly felt like I belonged with you this summer. I appreciate all the help you gave me throughout the summer, I could not have done it without you. Making it back to work with all of you for one last summer was truly a privilege.

Staff- I had an amazing time chilling with all of you guys this summer.

Everyone from the JCs to the Bunk 14 counselors should be proud of the way this summer went. I feel confident that I am leaving this place in good hands, and look forward to watching all of you take over and lead staff in the upcoming years.

CITs- You guys were an amazing group of hard workers and great people. You guys will make a great addition to staff next summer.You guys made my life a lot easier and I really appreciate that. Keep coming back to camp; there is no better job in the world.

Senior Soccer- You guys had the will to win, and were willing to do whatever it took to get in that lake. Jumping into the lake at the end of the tournament was one of the best feelings I have had in my 13 summers at this place. Thank you.

Outlaws- You guys competed harder than any team I have ever coached. Even through all the adversity you guys played tough and gave me everything you had.

It was amazing to coach each and every one of you.

Every summer at about

this time, the staff is asked to write a profile relating their personal reflections and various sentiments about what this place, Avoda, means to them. This summer, my final summer, brings a barrage of conflicting emotions. I am fulfilled that this past session was the best I can recall. I am devastated that it just isn’t going to work out that I can return as an employee any longer. I am jealous of all the CITs who have worked so very hard this summer and grown as a unit under a program that I am proud to pass on. I am empathetic for those Super Senior Staff members that know that this is to be their last times within the confines of the green gates as anything but alum.

I know few things with absolute certainty in life. I know that at the end of the day, we have to be able to look at ourselves and like what we see. I know that it is important to leave a place better than you found it. And, finally, and above all else, I know that my love and appreciation for Camp Avoda will not demish over time. Since coming back to camp in 2009, I have only tried to make the staff and, by extension, the campers, experience the true wonder that this place possesses. I feel that I have been successful in that. I love whom I feel honored to consider my staff and my CITs. I am painfully proud of them for doing their individual and group part to make

this summer the most amazing one that I can remember and one that I challenge others to recall better summers in comparison.

And leaving all other feelings and thoughts aside, I return to the three words that have marked my profiles for many years; words that, sadly, will mark them no longer, as I have no more profiles in me to scribe: I love Avoda. More so than I love most anything else in this world. Sadly, this is not the first time that I’ve left you, Avoda. Happily, we grow stronger with every departure.

And thankfully, I can hold you in my thoughts and in my heart, and know that it was right. I am truly sorry to be saying goodbye; however, the simple knowledge that you have existed for me and my friends, and that you will do all that you can to stick around for all those yet to experience your splendor, will, at some point in the future, put a smile on my face again.

Take care of this place, fellas. You never know when its time to say goodbye, until its time to say goodbye.

This is my 20

year at Avoda, and I don’t like it very much. I love it!!

I can remember the specific day back in February in 1993. My parents had told me that I wasn’t going to be returning to Camp Walt Whitman, the summer camp I had attended the previous 5 summers. Cost was the major reason, as CWW was to expensive for Todd (as he was known before his Avoda days) and myself to attend. Matt Bridges and Derek Weener were my brother and my best friends at home in Newton and they were already Avodians.

They would come over our house and just talk about where they spent there summers. They would talk about the evening activities, their friends at camp, and the Wars (both Desert and Color).

They were very convincing when saying that we should come. I never could have imagined that one decision, made 20 years prior, could total effect my life today and for the future.

I love this place. I live, eat, breath Avoda. I coach the Camp Avoda Newton East Tigers little league team in Newton. I also coach youth basketball in the winter and our press play is called, “Avoda”. My roommates are Avodians. My best friends are from camp. My boss is an Avoda alumnus. I go to 2-4 weddings a year, where th

there is usually a rendition of Sweet Caroline and the 14 alumni. I have been in a unique position during my years at camp. I was placed in two different age groups in my three years as a camper. I got a chance to be a bunk counselor for 8 years, which was a record I think (until Leon broke the record this past summer). I have been a part of many so campers, counselors, and CIT’s experiences during my time on staff.

There are so many great memories from the past 20 years.

I remember bringing bunk 1 and 2 into the Slubba Hut in 2004 when Silly and myself finagled our way into living in a Cabin by ourselves. We had Dave Chella run cable into the cabin and the freshman division was invited to watch cartoons on Sunday mornings. I remember the great shoe raid of 1994 when I was in bunk 12.

As a bunk, we went around at 2:00 in the morning and stole everyone’s shoes, sandals and anything else that could be considered footwear. We put all the shoes in a big pile down at the beach. It might have been the most underrated raid of all time.

As great as this place is, there have even been difficult times as well, moments that were tough to deal with, but ultimately were a great learning opportunity. Tough losses on the field are always the memories that bring up the most conversations. There have been incorrect and disappointing calls in CW and league. There have been numerous arguments and fights with good friends and coworkers. There have been people asked to leave and people who have chosen not

to return. But give people time and space from this place and they tend to return with open arms and clear minds and remember what attracted them to this special place in the first place. They are always welcomed home.

Throughout the years, there were a few times when a return was in question. A threat of an avodaless summer from my parents was what it took to make sure my grades stayed high in my early years. The many years in college, when summer classes, internships or a real job, might have sounded like a better choice then returning to camp. And this past off-season, when a job wasn’t guaranteed, the thought of not returning has always been my saving grace. An opportunity to return has always been met with much enthusiasm and excitement.

I spent the end of August 2011 in the shanty. Leon and I had moved out of our apartment in Dorchester and our new place wasn’t ready until September 1st. I loved being at camp. There is something about this place, that even an empty camp, is a wonderful environment to be in. Walking around from porch to porch, the rec hall to the lodge, down the path was such a joy.

Whether there are 200 campers and counselors in the mess hall for lunch, or the tables and chairs are put away and you really can notice just how many columns are in that space, the memories and feelings are still the same.

I stayed at camp during hurricane Irene. Prior to the storm hitting, my phone wouldn’t stop

ringing. My concerned mother called and wanted to make sure I was ok, even though she knew I would be.

Tibba called and wanted to come down but he was busy with work. As the storm got closer, I had a feeling of ownership that came over me.

Probably the same feeling that Ernie gets during the offseason, as he is the only one holding down the fort. I felt like I needed to watch over the grounds as strong winds and heavy rains came through the same Avoda Bubble that protects our sacred regular days during the summers.

Watching “Rob the Tree” sway back and forth during the height of the storm confirmed my decision of staying. “What if it snaps and falls into Bunk 9? Someone should be here.” The winds died down and the rains let up and everything was still standing.

I am very fortunate to have found a place where I can feel so comfortable. A place that has helped make me the person I am today. My Dad always told me to be a nice person and that would take me a long way in life. With that advice and my Mom and his willingness to cut tuition checks to Avoda back in 1993, I can truly say that I am forever grateful.

Year 2 Camp Advisor. Year

14 Avodian. Buddy and I back again. It was a great summer to be Camp Advisor.

It was billed as the “summer of smiles”. Positivity was flowing and everybody was loving life. With the help of Buddy, I was quickly able to help the few homesick campers realize what an amazing place Avoda is. What an easy job I have: make sure all kids have a great summer at Avoda.

One day the homesick campers want to go home, and the next they call Avoda their home. I have to thank the counselors for all their hard work with their campers in the bunk and at their electives. This made my easy job even easier. With the summer running so smooth, I was able to find many opportunities to help the counselors teach their electives. I helped campers learn to waterski and wakeboard, windsurf, slackline, play volleyball, and improve their ability to canoe. It was great to be able to spend so much time back down on the waterfront. As always, the waterfront staff remains the best staff at Avoda; after the Administration of course. Working with Paul, Ken, Bubbs, Nannis and Leon was a blast. You guys made Summer 2012 one not to be forgotten. Summer 2013 can’t come soon enough!

Here’s to 20 more Camp Avoda, Zababa, Zababa, Zababa, Zaha!
