To participate in all finals series in all Senior Grades of the SACA competition every year, with particular emphasis on 1st Grade, and have all Junior Grades participate at the highest level of their competition.

To identify and develop cricketers capable of competing successfully at Grade, State and Test levels.

To provide the best playing conditions for our teams, at all venues used by GDCC, with particular reference to oval surfaces, centre wicket squares and practice areas.

To provide Clubrooms and player change rooms at a standard comparable to the best in the SACA competition.

President’s Report I am very pleased to present my report for season 2016/2017.

My observations are from afar regarding this season as I have been missing for most of the season.

I felt the Club did a great job this season with excellent results in 1st and 2nd Grade while the 3rds had one bad game which cost it a place in the finals and the 4ths played well at times during the season with a very young team. The highlights were the great results with our Club Juniors with the Under 16 Reds and the Under 14 Whites both winning the premierships which was a magnificent outcome for the Club.

The 1st Grade were runners up in the 50 overs West End Cup and the T20 grand final which, whilst disappointing not to win one nevertheless was a first class effort. What a difference might it have been if we could have had Chadd Sayers, Alex Carey, Johan Botha and George Hankins available to play. The players who represented the Club in these games certainly did an excellent job. The 1st Grade finished in third place and lost to Kensington in the semi-final. The 2nd Grade did a very good job finishing the minor round in top place only to lose a very close semi-final.

I have left the individual player acknowledgments to the Senior Coach and Club Secretary in their reports.

The introduction of a Women’s Cricket Team this season was an exciting development which has now formed a solid foundation going forward for Women’s Cricket at our Club.

The Club’s long term plan is to field Women’s teams in SACA 1st Grade and a 2nd Grade and ongoing continue with a GDCC Junior Girl’s Academy.

To our Board members, scorers, afternoon tea ladies, kitchen volunteers, team managers, committee people just all those folks who give this Club so much, we thank you all for everything you do. It is very much appreciated.

My grateful thanks to Match Committee Chairman Paul Forster for the massive amount of work he does behind the scenes, thanks Paul. I also acknowledge the efforts of our first year Junior Coordinator Ben Pike who has done a great job in this role. I congratulate the Sponsorship and Fundraising Committee professionally led by Jarret Moyse for their efforts in raising the funds to keep the Club financially sound.

Thanks to our sponsors who play such a vital part in the wellbeing of the Club. Our Club has been wonderfully supported for many years by some great people and companies. There is full listing of all our sponsors in the front of this annual report; I urge all GDCC members, players and friends to support those sponsors.

I would like to acknowledge the extraordinary efforts for the Club of Maria and Alan Scholz. I know exactly how much they do on an ongoing basis, they are just brilliant.

I also acknowledge the efforts of our Treasurer Cheryl Cook and Chairman Jarret Moyse who have done so much behind the scenes for the Club.

With my absence this year I would like to personally thank Cheryl, Alan and Jarret who have covered for me so professionally. I am very grateful to you three outstanding club people.

The only thanks all the volunteers and officials need is success by our teams on the field.

We have a lot to look forward to in 2017/2018 with a complete revamping of our players change rooms. I am sure the new rooms will be accepted with great enthusiasm.

I would like to thank our Coaching Staff for professionally preparing the players. To Matthew Chapman our Club Coaching Co-ordinator and assistants Paul Forster, Neil Rowe, Adam Carey, Tom Plant, Jim Plant, Adam Rice, Grant Francis, Gordon Carey, Graham Sedunary and Peter Gladigau thank you gentlemen. To Peter Muggleton thank you for the way you mentored and coached the A grade all season.

I congratulate all trophy winners for season 2016/2017 the list of whom is published in the report.

I acknowledge the excellent efforts of our junior players when playing in higher grades. This year the Club also continued with our Glenelg Academy for Junior Players and thanks to Grant Francis and James Greenwell for their efforts. We continued to reap the rewards of our efforts with our Chappell Whitty Academy in Mount Gambier this year. We are encouraging the CW Academy to include more girls than they have in the past. We look forward to the flow of players from our country zone continuing.

I pay my sincere thanks to the City of Holdfast Bay for their wonderful support with our facilities especially when we host a Sheffield Shield match. Thanks to our Club Patron Mayor Stephen Patterson, CEO Justin Lynch and Steve Hodge GM City Assets for their outstanding support of our Club. Finally as you know I have had some health challenges during the year and I have been so comforted by the amount of support I have received from the GDCC Family. It has been truly overwhelming, thank you doesn’t seem to be enough. I have very much appreciated all you have done for me and it is something special which I will never forget.

We have a very young playing list, female and male, which is great for our future. We are well managed and financially sound, but we need to improve year on year and our players across all the grades have to accept that they need to be

Chairman’s Report The 2016/17 season was a historical year for the club for two main highlights.

Firstly with the club’s first women’s side competing in the SACA Women’s 2nd Grade Competition and secondly, later in the year, Tom Plant breaking Russell Parker’s long standing Club First Grade Runs Scoring record. Tom epitomises everything the club stands for being a tough competitor, a former State representative and he has been and continues to be a great, well respected and popular club man.

From a club performance point of view, it was almost as successful as you can be without winning any silverware.

Finishing in the grand final for both the West End One-day Cup and the T20 Competition as well as the semi-finals of the two-day competition says we are doing lots of things right and are consistently giving ourselves a chance of success, particularly in white ball cricket. Unfortunately the year was dominated by a club with its back against the wall in West Torrens and they were too good winning all three titles. The Second grade unfortunate went down in the semi and lower grades struggled for consistency but still had some great individual performances.

The club prides itself on having players represent the state and country with both Chadd Sayers and Alex Carey having exceptional record breaking years with the Redbacks.

Hopefully there is higher honours around the corner for both.

Thank you to Matthew Chapman for his efforts over the years who has stepped down as senior coach, probably with the honour of being our most successful coach in club history winning one-day, two-day and T20 premierships.

Club President Bob Snewin unfortunately wasn’t around the club as much as he would’ve liked this year due to illness as we all know but we look forward to having you back fit and well next year Sneeze. Thank you to those on the Board of Management who have stepped up in various roles to fill gaps throughout the year.

Raising money through sponsorship and fundraising continues to be difficult for many sporting organisations in the current economic climate but thank you to all our sponsors for your support, as without it we would struggle to keep running a successful club. Special mention to Peter and Mark Gladigau and the rest of the group involved in the Bay on the Green fundraiser, as a lot of work went into a great day for the club socially and fundraising wise.

Thanks to all volunteers and the rest of the coaching staff for their efforts throughout the year.

We look forward to getting some more of that silverware in season 2017/18!

Secretary’s Report 2016/17 will go down as the season of so near and yet so far.

Getting to the grand final of the T20 and One Day competitions, plus the semis of the Two Day comp., but sadly not winning any one of those games.

Together with the 2nd Grade making the semi-final and losing meant that we were around the mark in all competitions but fell at the last hurdle. After waiting 34 years, the Under 16 Red team won the premiership and the U/14 Whites also won the flag after a hiatus of 16 years. Congratulations to the coaches and players of those teams.

Speaking of coaches, Matthew Chapman has decided to resign from his role as GDCC Club Coach. Matthew has probably been our most successful Coach in the club’s history, with us winning 1 x 2 day, 1 x T20 and 1 x One Day Cup in his 6 years at the helm. He has indicated that he would like to assist with the U14’s where his son Zachary will hopefully play next summer, so it’s great that Chappy will continue with the club by now turning his coaching skills to the juniors. Congratulations Matthew Chapman on 6 great years as the Club coach, many years as a player and a great supporter of our Club.

Once again this year we were supported by the SACA in programming a Sheffield Shield game, the U/19 National finals and 3 Second XI games at Gliderol stadium. The income we receive from these games helps in the development of the clubrooms and playing facilities. As an example we will revert to having a full length white sight screen covering the cyclone fencing, with a black sight screen running on a supporting wire for the white ball games. This will take a huge load off of our volunteers (especially David Angove) who have to constantly change from white to black screens due to the mixed red and white ball program.

I would like to again thank the City of Holdfast Bay, and in particular their assets manager Steve Hodge for his support of our Club and the oval surface that all players enjoy. Our new curator, David Wark is very conscientious and keen to learn the trade of pitch curating. He is well mentored by SACA’s head curator Justin Groves, which ensures our centre square is one of the best in the competition.

Another curator we employ is Trent Kelly, who looks after Camden Oval’s centre square. Thanks to Trent’s efforts Camden’s pitches are now of good quality and feedback from the players has been positive. Trent also plays for West Torrens, and although a past junior with our club, I congratulate him and West Torrens DCC on their very successful season in winning all 3 SACA competitions this season.

The Council’s Master Plan for the Glenelg Oval complex has finally been released for public comment. The plan involved 12

the demolition of both the Sparks Stand and the Cricket Club to make one building. This new building will house change and viewing rooms for the players, 4 indoor cricket nets and new clubrooms for the cricket club. Additionally there will be a gymnasium and two indoor netball courts (multi-purpose).

We will lose our balcony, but not the glass viewing room we currently enjoy. It’s a big change with big dollars required for its completion. The Council, us and the football club will be seeking government grants to achieve this goal.

As I indicated earlier, although we won no senior flags, the Club had some good individual performances throughout the 4 grades. Obviously Chadd Sayers and Alex Carey had outstanding years playing for the SA Redbacks, just falling short (again) on winning the Sheffield shield after making the final in Alice Springs. Harry Cunningham won the KC Butler Medal (and bowling aggregate) as the best player in the SACA 2nd Grade and Mark Healey won the SACA McLeod/ Wilson Medal in the 4th Grade. We had Akash Patel winning the SACA bowling aggregate in 1st Grade, plus selection in the SACA Team of the Year, along with Ben Bullimore. We also had many players represent the State in various age groups, so as a Club, we are very well placed to continue being a leader in all competitions we play in.

Congratulations to all these players and to those who have won club awards at our successful presentation night.

A highlight of that night was the handing over of the Club’s batting record from Russell Parker to Tom Plant. Tom also passed 6000 1st Grade runs, making him the only Glenelg player to do so.

The Club introduced women’s cricket this season, and while we did not get the numbers for a senior team and a junior academy, the combined numbers allowed us to field a team in the SACA Women’s 2nd Grade competition. With ages ranging from 9 to 40 the girls combined well as a team and were playing some good cricket towards the end of the season. Our thanks goes to the Women’s Coordinator Cheryl Cook, Captain Kate Weger and the coaches Gordon Carey and Graham Sedunary for their visions and making it happen in 2016/17. With more help from SACA, particularly in schools, and increased numbers, hopefully in 2017/18 we will have a girls U/13 academy as well as a competitive 2nd Grade team.

My thanks also goes to Ben Pike who commenced as Junior Coordinator this season, and Grant Francis, the Junior Coaching Coordinator, for their tireless work with the junior players and volunteers. This is a big area of the Club’s operations covering the selection and development of junior players, running the In2Cricket centre, and sourcing volunteers for all teams. It should not be underestimated the importance of this area, especially as we also move into women’s cricket and establishment of a girls U/13 academy.

At the time of writing this report, work has begun on upgrading both changerooms by removing the space occupied by the Player’s Bar area. As a result of the demolition of the Sparks Stand, which housed the football club’s changerooms, there is a need to be able to host First Class and International teams in our own changerooms. This upgrade will provide the space needed for those teams, coaches and their support

entourage. Together with the support of the Holdfast Bay Council and Club fundraising through the past players association, we have been able to fully fund the upgrade project for not only 1st Class players, but our own players and visiting teams. These change rooms will become the envy of all other Clubs in the SACA Premier League.

This change became possible following the demise of the oval lease arrangement we had with the Glenelg Football Club, meaning we reclaimed the upstairs area (previously controlled by GFC) for exclusive use of the cricket club, making the Player’s Bar expendable. Having said that, I acknowldege the great working realationship I had with the football club, and in particular with Kristin Jeffery and Mitch

Bremner. They both supported cricket club events and worked with me to achieve amicable outcomes when club events/programmes clashed. This is a relationship I hope continues in the future to the benefit of both clubs.

Finally, my thanks to my fellow Board members for their efforts this season, and especially Brian McFadyen who took on the onerous task of doing the monthly meeting minutes.

Hopefully in 2017/18 we have our legendary leader back in harness and that Sneeze has fully recovered from his recent illness - his wisdom and enthusiasm for the Club was sorely missed.

At the end of the 2016/17 season Tom Plant had accrued 6062 runs at an average of 33.13. He has become the highest run scorer in the history of the Club, and the only player to exceed 6000 runs.

Treasurer’s Report I am pleased to report on the finances of Glenelg District Cricket Club for the year ended 30th June 2017.

During the 2016/17 financial year GDCC made a loss of $6583 after deducting depreciation of $12450. In effect the club made cash profit of $5867. This is a decrease from the previous year of $7268 The decrease in profit has been due to the extra expenses of taking back the upstairs area from the football club, the increase in coaching & playing costs as well as having a women’s team with its associated costs . Many of these extra expenses have been addressed for the forthcoming year.

The club continued to provide exceptional facilities and playing conditions for the players.

The players Bar has maintained a healthy profit. The fundraising and sponsorship committee have again done an amazing job in really tough times. We must also be more active in obtaining grants.

The club has been able to service its debts and meet all of its financial obligations throughout the financial year.

successful individual seasons and as a playing and coaching group we are all really proud of their ongoing success at higher levels.

Club Coach’s Report This season is my last as the senior coach at Glenelg. I have enjoyed nine seasons of senior coaching, the past six as the club coach and I am very grateful for the opportunity afforded to me by the club, the board and importantly the players.

The year may go down as an ‘almost year’ at Glenelg.

Beaten grand finalists in the T20 and one-day competitions and beaten semi-finalists in first and second grade respectively. Whilst no silverware was won by our seniors, as a club we should be very proud of our team and individual achievements across the season.

Unfortunately our first grade was not able to bring their best performance to the most important stage of two competitions against West Torrens who has set a new standard in all forms of competition. However it is important to keep in mind their only loss in all forms of cricket this summer came against Glenelg. Our First Grade won 7 games this year and with the aid of three drawn games finished 3rd.

An away semi-final awaited against Kensington and whilst we competed well over the two days, were comfortably beaten in the final session on day two.

Cricket change rooms can be amazing places when you win, they can also be lonely and tough places when you don’t.

Our players worked really hard to get to the finals in all competitions and to witness the disappointment among the players on those three finals’ days was pretty humbling. I know how much this group of players want to be successful.

A number of individual players had breakout seasons this year. The self-belief gained from their success at first grade level and the playing success of the team as a whole will hold the club in very good shape for future seasons. It was also terrific to see the First Grade debuts of two talented young players and sons of past players in Lawson Forster and 15 year-old Josh Hoffmann. A lot of positives come from this for the whole club.

However, with all the positives taken from the first grade this year, there is no hiding from the fact that we didn’t get the job done and no doubt the club will identify areas to improve going into next season.

As club coach I want to recognise and congratulate the following players on their achievements this season: • Chadd Sayers on his well-deserved selection in the Australian Squad and dual awards as Sheffield Shield and Redbacks Player of the Year on the back of a career best season; and • Alex Carey on his outstanding Shield season, with the most dismissals by a wicket keeper across the competition and an unforgettable 140 in the one-day cup semi-final for Glenelg.

• Jake Winter on his two successful representative games against South Africa and Pakistan and his award as SACA Young Cricketer of the Year not to mention captaining the club in two finals matches at 19 years of age.

• Ben Bullimore, Akash Patel as Premier Cricket Team of Year representatives. Akash as the leading wicket taker in the first grade competition.

• Nick Fox for selection in the SACA U/19s as leader of the U/19 and Glenelg fast bowling attack.

• Joshua Hoffmann as U/16 Cricket Australia team representative and SACA U/19 selection.

• Individual Awards to Harry Cunningham and not so young Mark Healey in 2nd and 4th grade as SACA medallists respectively.

This is the significant role of the grade club; to enable pathways for our players to the highest level of cricket possible; we are rightfully proud of the individual achievements of our players.

I will add my congratulations to Tom Plant on becoming the greatest run scorer in history for our club. Tommy is an exceptional example to our whole club, with his dedication and commitment to his game and the success of the club. A truly outstanding club person and cricketer and deserving recipient of this new title!

Our Second Grade finished top at the end of the minor round, winning nine games and losing only once for the season. We are consistently playing finals cricket in the seconds and have some exceptional young talent emerging.

Although beaten in heart-breaking circumstances in the semi-final against a far more experienced Tea Tree Gully side, the future remains very bright.

Our Third and Fourth Grades each used 33 players and finished 8th and 9th respectively. Unsettled playing groups in those grades makes it difficult to sustain success, however our playing group is better than those results suggest. They know that. We must take our opportunities when they present in future seasons.

We finished 6th in the Club Championship, improving from 8th last season. No question we had our opportunities this year to finish higher but for some poor results at times in lower grades. As a club we need that level of honesty and maturity about our individual and team performances to move forward.

I would like to thank and acknowledge our coaching team of Peter Muggleton as 1st Grade coach, John Douvlos as his assistant, Adam Rice as Development Coach, Adam Carey as Batting coach for our development group, Neil Rowe and Peter Gladigau for their exceptional work with our bowling group and cameos from Johan Botha and Tom Plant at various times throughout the season. They are an exceptional team and the envy of many rival clubs.

It has been an incredibly enjoyable experience for me as the senior coach at Glenelg. I am very confident that I leave this role with the knowledge that our club has a talented and committed playing group who are accountable to each other and have the willingness to continually improve. The players consistently drive the whole-club messages, deliver on the game plan and provide so much joy for our club. It has been a privilege to lead such a fine group of young men.

I look forward to seeing the continued development of our senior group, albeit from afar in future seasons.

1st Grade Coach’s Report It is a difficult season to summarize, whilst we did not win any silverware we did compete in two grand finals and a semi out of three competitions. As a playing group we set out at the start of the year to win every competition we play in. We fell a little short but I think the players and the club can be proud of their achievements this year.

The season began with some very high scoring games and numerous draws, some due to flat wickets and some due to the weather, but we managed to win enough games to stay in touch with top four.

The win against Port Adelaide off the last ball of the game thanks to a magnificent legspinning delivery from Akash Patel helped to kickstart our season. It was truly a memorable win and one of the highlights of the year.

Meanwhile the boys kept their limited over form going from the previous couple of years.

Wins post Christmas against East Torrens, Southern Districts, Prospect, Adelaide and eventual premiers West Torrens ensured our finals involvement. Our only losses for the year were to TTG and Kensington during the minor round.

along with Ben Bullimore who finally broke through with his first A Grade century made the grade team of the year. A great result for two very hardworking cricketers.

Congratulations also to Jake Winter for his selection in Cricket Australia teams to play Pakistan and South Africa and this was followed by his award as junior grade cricketer of the year.

Nick Fox emerged as a quality seam bowler after his participation with the state under 19’s including his first A Grade five wicket haul and looks set for a strong career at Glenelg.

Lawson Forster and Josh Hoffman both made their A Grade debuts, with Josh also repesenting the state at Under 19 level and included in the Australian U/15 Academy.

With Johan Botha, George Hankins and Shane Snater also representing different sides around the world, we are starting to have a global impact!

Myself and all the players would like to thank all the volunteers, assistant coaches, board members who put in so much time and effort and also a big special thank you to Matthew Chapman for his hard work and terrific support, enjoy your time away from the role.

We all look forward to next year.

Unfortunately we probably saved our worst performances of the year for the two limited overs finals. The One Day final at Henley against West Torrens saw a batting collapse early that we never recovered from and the T20 at Adelaide Oval saw a disapointing bowling effort cost us the game. The efforts and performance of this group in these formats over recent years has been outstanding and we will endevour to keep this going.

Whilst we lost the Grade Semi Final against Kensington, everybody can be proud of the efforts of the team that weekend.

After losing a couple of early wickets, Josh Roach and Danny Irvine produced a great partnership and with some late hitting from Shaun Rice we were able to declare to try and give ourselves a chance to bowl the Browns out. This was to prove too difficult, only nine wickets fell over two days on a good batting wicket.

Next year we must aim to finish in the top two.

The club can be very proud of the achievements of many of our players, obviously there are two that standout. Chadd Sayers and Alex Carey had great years at first class level culminating in Chadd’s selection in the Australian XII and Alex now being touted as the next Australian keeper. I can’t stress enough the influence of these two players have on the playing group when they are around.

2nd Grade Captain’s Report Season 2016/2017 was a hard fought season for the 2nd grade that unfortunately ended bitterly in the semi-finals for the second straight year.

We started the season very strong out at Campbelltown oval, with a team that had four guys that we wouldn’t see much of again through the year because they would be playing 1st grade. After the first game, changes to the team would be a regular throughout the season because of injuries, college cricket and players going up and down on form. A total of 26 players played throughout the season. Despite all of this, we would still go on to top the table in the last round, with only 1 loss during the season.

One thing that we did better than most this season was to bowl teams out or keep them to an easy total to chase. Led by spinner Harry Cunningham with 19 wickets, it seemed to be almost every week that our bowlers were getting us out of sticky situations or setting the game up for us. Our bowling line up was a young one, with our pace bowlers being between 18 and 22 for most of the year. There were some great performances throughout the season, and every bowler seemed to do their job each week. I just want to mention one in particular in Marcus Lee who missed out on the semi-final last season, but took it in his stride and led the fast bowlers this year with 16 wickets at an average of 16 and was always reliable.

2016/17 wasn’t a great year for the batters. We had a young and inexperienced 2nd grade batting side for most of the year. Despite this, Josh Hoffman and Rikki Boschma,

both of whom were eligible to play U/16 at the end of the season, made an impression in the 2nd grade making strong contributions during the year. Harry Cunningham, who made 407 runs in his 11 games, was another standout for the 2nd Grade batting side. Two other key batsmen for the season were Joshua Roach and Nathan Schollar. Both played the majority in 1st grade, but when they came back to the twos showed they were too good, with Josh averaging 127 from 4 hits, and Nathan 55 from 5 hits.

Even though we fell short in the end, it was a great year for the 2nd grade topping the ladder at the end of the minor round. We have a lot of exciting young talent at the club, which will hopefully mean we will be competing for many years to come.

Well done to all the award winners at the end of the season.

A special mention to Harry Cunningham, who won the SACA 2nd grade medal for the competition which was very well deserved.

I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone that helped out over the season. All the mothers, fathers and other family members with the lunches and teas, everyone that helped with the scoreboard and team managing throughout the season (I won’t name you all as I don’t want to forgot anyone!) and Bruce Chapman – thank you again scoring for the 2nd grade.

Thank you to all the coaching staff throughout the season, especially John who worked very closely with the team all year and helped me out in my first year as Captain quite a lot.

Lastly, a very big thank you to Mathew Chapman who has retired from the top job at Glenelg this season. Well done on your 7 years in the job. You are leaving very big shoes to fill! Enjoy your time with the family.

2nd Grade Women’s Captain’s Report October 23rd is now part of the proud history of the GDCC, when the inaugural Women’s 2nd Grade team took the field, dressed in Seahorses yellow and black.

Although the match against Northern Districts wasn’t a win, we stood in the field, excited to bowl and bat our way through our first game.

Thinking back to that first game it is astounding how far our team has come in one season. Having started with a team of young women and girls (some as young as 11 years old), most of whom have never played a full game of cricket, our bowling, batting and fielding has vastly improved. Teaching them about all aspects of cricket has been challenging, and we have a way to go still, but the team was willing to put in the work and show the Club that we are up for the challenge to improve and strengthen women’s cricket.

A lot of our season was weather dependant, with plenty of our T20 matches rained out in the first half of the season and heat affecting matches in the second half of the season.

Some match scheduling issues also shortened our season, which was frustrating, as match practice and game time is vital for the growth of our team.

A high point for our season was our first T20 win against Kensington at their home ground. Our bowlers took to the field with vigour and we bowled them out for 43, with highlights of Mikayla Mark’s 4/14 and Sarah Edwards’ 2/13.

We were able to make 53 with Kate Weger getting 33 to run down Kensington’s score. It was a proud moment, as the inaugural Captain, to be out there when we ran down their score and be able to celebrate (soft drinks!) with our young and enthusiastic team.

Another highlight for our team was to be able to play on our home field Gliderol Oval. Knowing that some cricketers will play their whole career and not be able to play on this amazing field showed us how lucky we are to play there. Having our incredible Club facilities for players and spectators makes us proud to play for Glenelg, when some games we had to change outdoors under a veranda.

University in Round 9. There were multiple bowlers who were improving rapidly, and by the seasons end, looked very sharp and consistently bowled at other player’s stumps.

Teaching the younger girls to support the team as Vice Captains has been something we have worked on this season. We could have chosen to stack the leadership with more mature players, but to build women’s cricket at Glenelg, it was important that the younger girls had experience with leading the team, making on field decisions and generally learning the ins and outs of cricket. Mikayla Mark and Rachael Brown acted as Vice Captains across the season, and did a great job. I’m sure next season their skills will improve again, their futures are bright in cricket, as are all of our girls.

I would like to thank all of the parents of players who have helped out across the season. With such a young group, there is certainly a lot of work that goes into getting them to training and games, so thank you for your support of the team. I would also like to individually thank Darren Allan for his support of our training and games, as our pseudo ‘team manager’. I really appreciated his ongoing positive attitude and helpful nature, with fielding drills, batting and bowling in the nets and generally anything I asked for help with. Thank you to our scorer Caroline Parker, who is a key supporter of our team every week with her outstanding skills in the scorebook. Also, thank you to Gemma Burdon, who without her support and organising behinds the scenes we would have struggled to take to the field.

Lastly, our team would like to thank the whole Club for welcoming the first women’s team. Even the little things have been helpful, like saying g’day to our players or feedback to our bowlers and batters in the nets from other coaches and senior players. These little tips not only help build our skills, but also help us to feel part of the Club as a whole. Also, we would like to thank board member Cheryl Cook, and other females around the Club, who have all been a great advocates for our women’s team.

In the off season a lot of our team has been working closely with Graham Sedunary in the nets so we are looking forward to joining in the pre-season trainings soon. A strengthened team and improving skills will afford us more success in season 17/18 for women’s cricket at GDCC.

Kate Weger Women’s 2nd Grade Captain

For next season we will need to improve our batting to be able to compete at a consistent level. But with most of our team 15 years old or younger, it has been difficult for them to stand and face adult fast bowlers who have had years of practice. As our confidence with the bat grows, we will show that we can build good scores to defend next season.

3rd Grade Captain’s Report 2016/2017 was an improved year for the 3rd Grade, however, finishing in 8th place was a disappointing result.

Inconsistency in performances throughout the season, a common trend, as well as being in a strong position to win the game only to let it slip. With a vast amount of players filtering through the team we are able to see the bright future this club holds with its young players who will only benefit from experience of playing senior cricket.

Looking back, our goal at the start of the year was to develop consistency in performance, this may have not been achieved as a whole game approach, however, there were plenty of positives to come from the season.

Rounds 1 & 2 had put us on the back foot straight away with losses to East Torrens and Adelaide University. We had put ourselves in a strong position for both of these games, but our inability to maintain partnerships throughout our batting innings was disappointing. Steven Heatley started the year off strongly with scores of 31 & 33 and was one of our most consistent performers with bat throughout the season. With the ball, having the likes of Liam Thompson, Lachlan Combes and Lawson Forster filter through early on was beneficial. Unfortunately Round 3 against Sturt ended up in a draw on the 2nd day due to wet weather, although this happened to be one of our best batting displays for a while finishing day 1 on 285. John Douvlos turned back the clock with 108, while Jayson Bartolo and James Nicholson showed their ability with bat by scoring 50’s.

In Round 4, we were able to continue our strong performance with the bat and post 6/413 in a one-day game and post our first win of the season against Port Adelaide! Joel Garrett stood above the rest with 214, our DLCA import Ollie Tikare posted 78 and Jayson Bartolo continued his good run with the bat with another 50. With the ball Lachlan Combes tore the Port Adelaide team apart with figures of 6/29 and really pushing hard for 2nd grade selection. Round 5 was another draw that saw the game called off due to wet weather and, with only 20 runs to win it was a frustrating result for the team. Lachlan Combes was in the wickets again with 3/17, whilst Chris Broad and Steven Heatley were both unlucky to finish not out in the 30’s when play had stopped.

After the Christmas break we had the bye, followed by Tea Tree Gully in Round 9 in which we posted 131, which proved to not be enough in the end as they passed it 6 wickets down.

However, Round 10 was another story completely, with a comprehensive outright victory against Southern Districts.

After posting 7/186 with Joel Tilbrook and Jayson Bartolo scoring 50’s, Daniel Clarke and Lawson Forster proved too good taking 7 and 5 wickets respectively over both innings in which Southern Districts only managed 80 and 60.

Another good performance in Round 11 kept our hopes alive of making a finals appearance, falling just short of another outright victory against West Torrens. Scott Applegarth showed his experience in both innings with 37 and 60* and Lachlan Combes continued his fantastic season by taking 8 wickets for the match. Unfortunately we finished the season how we started, with 2 losses. Being in a dominant position against Prospect in Round 12 only to lose wickets consistently in the middle/lower order lost us the game.

Compared to Round 13 against Adelaide where our top order failed to fire finishing all out for 145 and not being able to do the job with the ball as they passed the score 7 wickets down.

Overall, our strongpoint as a team was our bowling, with Lachlan Combes showing that he was a standard above with 21 wickets. Lachlan had an outstanding season with the ball and season in general by being rewarded with a 2nd grade selection, in which I’m sure he will maintain! Following was our front line spinner James Nicholson with 14 wickets, who thrived in an all-rounder role. However, credit is also due to the likes of Jay Turlan, Lawson Forster and Max Tonkin who were more than serviceable. Efforts with the bat this year were quite indifferent again with players moving between Grades, as well as making starts and not being able to convert. While only playing one game Joel Garrett won the batting trophy, however, Jayson Bartolo and Steven Heatley showed great improvement and were rewarded with playing in the 2nd Grade.

Finally, I want to thank Matthew Chapman for all the hours of work he has put into this great Cricket Club as Head Coach, it is greatly appreciated and I wish him all the best for the future! Thank you to all of the other coaches, as well as the 3rd Grade playing group for their support throughout the season. A big thanks must also go to Ian Milne for being our scorer, you do a fantastic job.

Here’s to hoping for an enjoyable and successful 2017/18 as a club!

A loss in Round 6 to Kensington followed by a win in Round 7 against Northern Districts again showed our inconsistency in performances to string some momentum together. Our batting lacked composure and was evident with collapses early on or in the middle in both games. However while being 4/17 chasing 115 against Northern Districts was worrying, we came away with the win.

4 Grade Captain’s Report th

The 4th Grade had mixed fortunes in 2016/17 winning 5 games, losing 6 with one draw.

The team used 33 players during the season, with many of the players still eligible for junior selection.

After opening with a good win against East Torrens with Sam Cook taking 4/18, Glenelg collasped in the 2nd game for 96 losing to University, with Kai Boschma scoring 50 of those runs. 2 more wins and a draw were followed by another batting collapse, which became a bit of a pattern for the rest of the season. Bowling was the strength of the side, but without consistent batting, wins were hard to come by.

the 4th Grade, but also took out the SACA’s McLeod/Wilson Medal for the best player in 4th Grade, along with the SACA bowling award for 4th Grade. Heals also won the David Johnston Trophy for the Club’s bowling aggregate with 34 wickets. What an outstanding season with the bat and ball in the 4th Grade for Mark Healey.

The Club’s thanks goes to Peter (Gof) Hanley for scoring through out the season, and to David Boschma for team managing and filling in to score when Gof was not available.

Whilst the Club does not look for Premierships in the lower grades, prefering to blood potential future 1st Grade players, we look forward to a stronger showing next season, with the Under 16 Reds winning the premeirship and the 14 Whites also winning the big one. The future looks bright for the Club with a number of young players expected to make their mark in 2017/18.

The team had one exceptional player though in Mark Healey who following an illness in the previous season, resumed his playing career with a vengenace.

Junior Coordinator’s Report Overview The 2016/17 season has been nothing short of amazing for the GDCC juniors. Our players have all worked extraordinarily hard from the start of seasons Snake Pit session, through a rigorous program of fielding skills and fitness and conditioning. Some sessions were uncomfortable for the players, however their buy in should be acknowledged. For some this was their first taste of unrestricted cricket and at Premier Cricket Club environment, which takes considerable adjusting to. However they rose to the challenge eagerly and seemed to relish the improvements in their skill base. As a program first we also provided nutrition training at the beginning of the season in the hope that our players would see this as an important part of their health and development.

With the exception of a few rain and heat events and couple of forfeits, we played a lot of good quality cricket and it has been a great pleasure to see the changes in our players occur as they have improved over time. The reward of all this hard work was to have two juniors sides make it to and win their respective grand finals in one season - a remarkable feat. A just reward for the high work ethic of all the junior squads and their coaches. Despite two teams not making the finals series, all should be justifiably proud of their achievements as it is a reflection the hard work of all juniors’ players.

The junior program would also like to congratulate the senior coaching staff and players on another strong season. One of the clubs goals is to have an emphasis on our A Grade participating in all finals series and this was achieved this season. Having seniors sides playing in the 3 different formats finals series and a strong finish for the 2nd grade, shows just how competitive the club is.

Team Performances During this season, one of the conditions coaches placed upon our players was ‘to demand selection’. It was up to the players to ensure that they were considered for selection round by round. This would need to be demonstrated by, most importantly, how they would help balance the team by what they contribute and by their hard work at training, clear evidence of improvement and current form.

One of the clubs philosophies is to identify players who can play out of their age group to accelerate their development and this was once again achieved with a number of players playing in higher grades. As with all seasons, older juniors’ players were frequently asked to fill roles in the senior squads to cover College cricket and other commitments, injury and illness, which in turn gave several younger players the opportunity to also move upwards to the next division to test themselves at a higher level. Overall this system has worked well for us again this season and as the players accustom themselves to this process, it will only strengthen their skill sets and game experiences.

Our Junior Academy, as an U/12 team, had an interesting final 42

year in the SCJCA competition. Without consultation, the squad was promoted to the U/14 Gold division after strong performances in previous years by other squads playing in their normal age group. With a good mix of established and new players they faced an uncertain season, often competing against considerably bigger and older boys. The Academy finished 3rd overall with 5 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw. A great result from a very determined group of youngsters.

The U/16 Reds, 7 wins 1 loss and three draws. Most games were won comfortably. After finishing third in the minor rounds, Glenelg went to to win both their Semi-final against Southern Districts and Grand Final against Woodville in convincing fashion with rarely a foot put wrong.

The results for the U/16 Whites are not reflective of the true story. Despite finishing 7th overall from 5 wins, 4 losses and 2 draws, the season results paint a very different picture.

Three very close games went down to the wire and could have gone either way. The team finished the season strongly by beating Southern Districts convincingly in round 10 and a close fought win over Sturt in the final round.

Both the U/16 Whites and U14 Reds perhaps suffered the most from player movement between the ranks. The U/14 Reds finished 9th overall with 4 wins, 5 losses and 2 draws.

However there were promising signs and throughout the season, frequent quality contributions from across the playing group in many games. We look forward to continued contributions as the players move into the U/16 age group.

After a shaky start to the beginning of the season, the U/14 Whites finished second at the end of the minor round with 8 wins, 2 losses and 1 draw. Going on to win their semi-final comfortably against Woodville and finally prevailing over Sturt in a gritty and determined Grand-final. Most minor round games were closely fought affairs which perhaps gave us the edge over Sturt who had been winning comfortably all season.

In the short form competitions, results were varied.

The Junior Academy also competed in the annual SACA U/12 Shield (formerly State Wide Cup) in the first week of the summer holidays against other Premier Cricket sides. A four day carnival that introduces young players to proper cricket from which early talent can be identified by the SACA. Out of 14 teams our Academy squad acquitted themselves very well finishing 7th. A strong result for such a newly formed team.

Ray Sutton Shield (primary School aged players) is played on Sunday afternoons over the first five Sundays of the normal rounds. Glenelg performed poorly finishing 4th out of 6 in our zone with only 1 win, 2 losses and 2 draws. An interesting result considering many of the players would go on to play in the U/14 Whites team for the rest of the season. We are looking to regroup again for next season.

The U/17 Shield is played over the second week of January and is typically made up of a combination of U/16 players and some seniors who still qualify by age. GDCC performed very well, finishing second (3 wins, 2 losses and 1 draw) in their zone and just missing out on a Grand-final berth. The competition was fierce and the quality of cricket very high.

Five GDCC players were chosen for the Team of the Year, selected from the best players of the competition.

in and commitment to, their training and game play. The success we have enjoyed is a direct reflection of the love our players clearly have for the game and their relationships with their coaches.

Plans and organisation for the new season are already well underway and we look forward to what the future holds.

Coaching and Support Staff I have only just alluded to the effort our coach’s put in this last season. We have much to be thankful for. So much of their time and effort has been given to provide a very high standard of coaching in many areas. We are so fortunate to have a very strong junior coaching panel that are highly qualified, committed, passionate and willing to share their knowledge with the players. This resource ensures the high standard that we expect from the players is continually and positively driven forward for which we offer much thanks.

Grant Francis as Junior Coaching Director has done an excellent job in directing coaches and team selection and many other things besides. His tireless input, boundless energy and enthusiasm for what he clearly loves doing is pivotal to the increasing success we have enjoyed over this year. His time spent in the UAE with the SACA High Performance study program at the beginning of the season (while his absence was felt) is also a huge bonus for our Club.

Our core coaching group is Ben Higgins and team manager Craig Bowering (U/16 Red), Sean Gilbert (U/16 White), Ben Arthur (U/14 Red), Paul Forster (U/14 White, RSS), James Greenwell and Shield team manager Simon Wilkinson (Junior Academy, SACA U/12 Shield), Jake Winter and team manager Martin Edwards (SACA U/17 Shield), Graham Sedunary (net sessions and conditioning) and Darren Davis (fielding and conditioning). Additional exceptional input was provided

by Steven Heatley with the U/16’s and RSS squads. Their clear delight in watching their charges improve as the season progressed was palpable and their approachability and openness with the players added to the mix. Further to this group, we received excellent help from Laura Bond at the beginning of the season through her fielding session and expertise she shared from her softball experience. Jenna Matters also contributed some important diet and health information over two sessions.

Of course our teams would not exist without the help of the parents. The committee members who acted as Game Day managers and all other parents who stepped in to help when required. We are extremely grateful to all the parents and carers who contributed to scoring, ground set up and breakdown, afternoon teas and fetching and carrying sundry children, forgotten items, supplying first aid and general care and support of our players.

Thank you everyone for the season that was and hope you will all be involved again next season.

On a sadder note we say farewell to the Club Director of Coaching Matthew Chapman, with whom Grant has had a great working relationship. The effort and tireless work that Chappy has put in as club coach over the last 6 season’s needs acknowledgement. His enthusiasm and professionalism has not gone unnoticed and we look forward to having him involved with the juniors. Congratulations Chappy on a fantastic stint in this role.

Last and by no means least I would personally like to thank the Junior Committee. This group has worked extremely well together, organising so many aspects of the juniors’ functionality and addressing the various issues that surface as the season progresses.
