SPRING OF 2020 4-WEEK INVESTIGATION

ROW HOUSE

Designed in Ohio-The-Rhine (OTR) Cincinnati, Ohio, this 4-week row house investigation was focused based on four seperate typologies. Those typologies being: Live and Work - a design narrative aimed towards an individual(s) who would work from home.

Gardening - a row house design centered around green space and natural lighting.

Co-Housing - focused designing for a row house housing 4 individuals.

In-Law Suite - a seperate housing unit with common spaces for both families to interact.

For this investigation, I focused on the Live and Work narrative, a design focused for a simple family of two, a husband and wife, who are starting their own small interior design and architecture firm.

SUMMER OF 2019 2-WEEK INVESTIGATION

ICE PAVILION

Built in a hypothetical site, this investigation studied tectonics as a way of informing spacial design. Tectonics is the exposure of structural elements as an aesthetic narrative to help convey the building’s design principles.

For this investigation, I studied the works of Peter Zumthor, more specifically, ‘the Allmanajuvet Zinc Mine Museum’ and Mies Van Der Rohe’s ‘Farnsworth House’ as precedents for simplicity in design, different uses in lighting effects, and connecting the landscape with the pavilion to use as a structural insertion.

SUMMER OF 2019 2-WEEK INVESTIGATION

SAUNA HOUSE

Located in North Bend, Virginia, this project involved a precident analysis of therapeutic pools, various saunas, and plunge pools to better understand the thermal comfort and insulation of these spaces.

Material selection, the use of simple design, and natural lighting help guide the design process. The use of juxtaposing angles guide the user through a process of expansion, to compression, to extension. An exterior courtyard stands out front for visitors to relax where trees are used as shading and privacy.

As in the Ice Pavilion, this project focused on the idea of tectonics and implimenting structure as design. My use of tectonics for this project is the constructuction of the seating arrangement for the sauna users.

FALL OF 2018 6-WEEK INVESTIGATION

POETRY FOUNDATION

Located in Over-The-Rhine (OTR) Cincinnati, Ohio, this project looked at a site located across from Washington Park as a potential Poetry Foundation, similiar to the one located in Chicago, Illinois.

For this investigation, we had a variety of program requirements and square footages to consider when designing. Some of these required spaces include a library, 2-forms of circulation, viewing galleries for artwork, office and work space, and also a small, interior amphitheater.

For my design, I focused on the juxtaposition between interior and exterior space by implimenting a double-height courtyard seperating the wings of the library. I also focused on an experiential staircase that would connect you to the outdoors and a large screening element for the amphitheater for lighting effects and privacy.

SUMMER OF 2019 6-WEEK INVESTIGATION

POOL HOUSE

Following the sauna investigation, this 6-week project focused on designing a new public pool within Filson Park, located in Over-The-Rhine Cincinnati, Ohio.

Taking elements from the sauna investigation, such as the extension of spaces to project out towards nature and also from the ice pavilion project looking at the simplicity of structure and how that can be fully expressed.

For the project, students had the potential to build upon two seperate areas of Filson Park. Site #1, located at the front of the park is currently occupied by an already existing public pool; and Site #2, located deeper along a wooden path secluded from the rest of the park and surrounded by nature.

For my project, I chose to design on Site #2 because of the seclusion and connection to nature. I designed my pool house to work along the contours of the site and to connect interior and exterior experiences.
