Executive Director Letter Greetings SOC members! Summer greetings to SOC members and Camera Operator magazine readers, The Society of Camera Operators (SOC) has been on an exciting upward trajectory over the past several years, welcoming a growing membership from broader geographic regions and a wide range of skills and career paths beyond the traditional cinema industry. As our community has grown, so too have our programs, offerings, and member benefits, ensuring we continue to serve the evolving needs of our diverse membership. In July, we hosted two hands-on workshops that focused on very different aspects of the craft - operating with cranes and multicamera production. These events reflected our commitment to providing practical education across the many disciplines our members represent. This August, we're excited to host three events organized by our Inclusion Committee in Los Angeles, New York, and Atlanta. These gatherings are designed to celebrate our members nationwide while introducing the SOC to others in the production community. None of this would be possible without our incredible volunteers. SOC members generously contribute countless hours of their time and expertise as instructors, mentors, board members, gearhead hosts, committee chairs, and committee members. Their willingness to share their knowledge, support fellow camera professionals, and help elevate the craft is truly inspiring. That welcoming, "pay it forward" spirit is the heartbeat of the Society, and I thank each of you from the bottom of my heart for making the SOC the extraordinary community it is. Insight
What was one of your most challenging shots or challenging days in the industry? One of the most challenging shots I've had was while shooting Jay-Z at Yankee Stadium, operating an AGITO Trax with a SHOTOVER G1, RED V-RAPTOR, and a Fujinon 24-300mm lens wide open at f/1.4. It doesn't sound like the toughest assignment because Jay-Z isn't sprinting across the stage, however he has a constant bounce and rhythm to his movement and consistency became key. Holding tight close-ups while matching his subtle movements on a moving platform required anticipating where he'd lean, pivot, or drift next. With the lens at f/1.4, there was very little room for error, so every move had to be smooth and intentional. It was especially rewarding, knowing how many variables had to come together. When everything synced up—and Jay-Z landed exactly where you expected—you got these beautiful, intimate close-ups. Those are the moments that remind me why I love operating. The audience just sees effortless shots, but everyone behind the camera knows how much precision went into making it happen. What would be the most important improvement you would like to see in our industry? I'd like to see more mentorship and opportunities for emerging camera operators. Great technology matters, but nothing replaces experience, instinct, and investing in the next generation. LEEANN LEONARD What was one of your most challenging shots or challenging days in the industry? Shooting in Nome, Alaska and on the Bering Sea in sub-zero temperatures. With only four hours of daylight to shoot with per day—along with keeping equipment and gear operational in extreme conditions—it was an incredibly demanding job. What would be the most important improvement you would like to see in our industry? Being Native, I would like to see much more proper representation in front of and behind the camera. More than a decade before he created one of the most heralded television series of all time in Breaking Bad, Vince Gilligan cut his teeth as a writer, director, and executive producer on The X-Files. With Pluribus—now nominated for 18 Emmy Awards— Gilligan is returning to his roots in weird science fiction and paranormal thrillers in a show that asks, “What if one of the last real people on Earth was a bit of a train wreck?” 8

Camera Operator had the chance to sit down with series A camera operator Matt Credle, SOC; now a veteran of Vince Gilligan’s Albuquerque-based productions, to talk about the visual language of this show that emphasizes its characters’ isolation, as well as location shooting and working with background talent that are all effectively portraying a single character.
TECH ON SET
Carol Sturka is the author of a hit series of fantasy romance novels that she despises. Her ambitions of being a “real” writer and penning a great work of literature have given way to churning out lowbrow slop, while she drowns her feelings of self-loathing in liquor. Fittingly, it is at a bar where Carol notices planes flying overhead, spraying a chemical containing a mysterious RNA sequence broadcast to Earth from a far distant planet. As the fellow patrons of the bar start to seize before reawakening as part of a new global hive mind, Carol is faced with the fact that she may be the last hope to save humanity. Pluribus is created by Vince Gilligan, and stars Rhea Seehorn, Karolina Wydra, and CarlosManuel Vesga.

Even amidst an illustrious career, Steven Spielberg’s films about visitors from other worlds stand out. Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. the ExtraTerrestrial remain some of the filmmaker’s most enduring, beloved works. At a glance Disclosure Day appears to follow in their footsteps, and though thematic lines can be drawn between these movies about mysterious wonders from outer space, perhaps the more interesting parallel is found in Spielberg’s previous film, The Fabelmans. What do you do with a preternatural gift for understanding and communication rooted in past trauma, and how do you react when your efforts to make sense of that become critically important to millions of people you’ve never met? It’s a master filmmaker wrestling with his own legacy and how the tool of visual storytelling can be used both to divide, suppress, and impose one’s own perspective on another as well as to illuminate, enlighten, and bring people together.

On the run from his former employer, the shadowy agency Wardex, Daniel Kellner intends to reveal the truth that the agency has kept secret for decades about the existence of extra-terrestrial life, but he can’t do it alone. After being greenlit and produced during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hacks had something of a tough road ahead of it. Now five seasons and dozens of Emmy nominations later—including 24 for the latest season—the series has become a beloved institution and gets to go out on a high note with a funny and emotionally moving series finale. SOC Presents Operator to Operator: Conversations From Behind the Camera Society of Camera Operators’ Operator to Operator series brings seasoned camera operators together for open and candid conversations about their careers and lives behind the lens. With no topic off-limits, each discussion offers a 360-degree view of the profession—from the craft and collaboration behind the work to the real stories, challenges, and triumphs experienced along the way. The interactive format also gives attendees the opportunity to engage directly with the featured operators through audience Q&A. Operator to Operator has taken place on both coasts, with conversations hosted at Canon in Los Angeles and ARRI Rental in New York. From the Stage to Social SOC has extended Operator to Operator beyond the live events through an ongoing social media series. Every two weeks, a new conversation clip is released, highlighting a story, insight, or memorable moment from the discussions and bringing these exchanges to an even larger audience.
