Message from the President Hi everybody, I hope this message finds you all doing okay in these extremely interesting times. First off, I want to thank everyone who participated in the recent membership survey. The SOC's Board of Governors met just this past Sunday and, on behalf of them, let me say we were really touched by how many responses we got back and how much thought you all put into your comments. We also want you that we heard you loud and clear, so much so that I'm about to share some of what we learned right here in this video.

 WATCH NOW

Number one, you made it crystal clear the single most valuable aspect of your SOC membership is by far education. “Bettering your skills” and “attending workshops” occupied the number one and number three spots among your responses and mentions of education appeared frequently in almost every other part of the survey. In second place, you put “gathering and networking with peers” or what we like to call “community.” So…more meetups, more workshops, in more places at lower cost are clearly your top priorities and I want you to know we heard you.

In 2015, Ridley Scott’s adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel The Martian went on to be a critical success and a box office juggernaut, ending up as one of the highest grossing films of that year. Now, just over a decade later, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s adaptation of Weir’s third novel, Project Hail Mary, has proven to be a similar success. In the midst of our current global turmoil, something has clearly resonated in this story of facing impossible odds and overcoming fear by finding someone who inspires you to be better than you believed you could be. Camera Operator had the chance to speak with A camera and Steadicam operator Jason Ewart, ACO about his experience working on the film, from shooting inside the practical spaceship sets with modified digital cameras designed to capture footage for IMAX screens, to spending most of the shoot working with just a single actor and an alien puppet. 10

In the not-too-distant future, the Sun is dying; slowly being eaten by an interstellar microorganism known as astrophage. In a desperate attempt to save humanity—a Hail Mary, if you will—Earth’s nations unite to develop a ship that can travel to the nearest star that has not been affected by the astrophage, in the hopes that it will provide the secret for saving our world. Disgraced molecular biologist and current school teacher, Ryland Grace, is recruited to help study the astrophage only to eventually be volunteered to embark on this one-way mission to the other end of the galaxy. Project Hail Mary is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller from a screenplay by Drew Goddard. It stars Ryan Gosling, Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, and Lionel Boyce.

Slow Burn Horror-Comedy

Widow’s Bay

An interview with Michael Fuchs, SOC and John Garrett By David Daut

 WATCH THE TRAILER

Courtesy of Apple

When it comes to the blending of horror and comedy, there’s something of a spectrum. On one side you have something like Shaun of the Dead, which is primarily a comedy that happens to feature aesthetic elements of horror (namely, zombies). On the other side, you have something like Sam Raimi’s original The Evil Dead: on the surface a fairly gnarly horror movie, but which belies a slapstick sensibility to its gory gags. Widow’s Bay sits squarely in the middle of that spectrum. The horrifying elements of its story are played almost entirely straight, while the characters these horrors befall just happen to be eccentric weirdos. When you learn that series creator Katie Dippold’s initial idea for this began as a spec script for Parks and Recreation, things kind of fall into place. Effectively, Widow’s Bay asks the question, “what if a town like Pawnee, Indiana was beset by an ancient, evil curse?” 14

SOCIETY OF CAMERA OPERATORS · SOC.ORG

Multimedia Feature Camera Operator had the opportunity to speak with A camera and Steadicam operator Michael Fuchs, SOC along with B camera operator John Garrett about balancing these tones of horror and comedy, finding a cohesive visual through line, for a series that dabbles in a “monster of the week” structure, and working alongside a rotating roster of directors and DPs. Mayor Tom Loftis has big plans for the little New England island community of Widow’s Bay. He hopes that he can fashion this odd little town into a major tourist destination, a la Martha’s Vineyard, reinvigorating the town’s economy and building better prospects for his teenage son. There’s just one problem: Widow’s Bay is cursed. As the island awakens and hungers for its centuries’ old debt of human sacrifice, Loftis, along with his assistant Patricia Moyer, and local crank Wyck Crawford must uncover the island’s history in the hopes of undoing whatever covenant has cursed this town. Widow’s Bay is created by Katie Dippold, and stars Matthew Rhys, Kate O’Flynn, Kevin Carroll, Dale Dickey, Kingston Rumi Southwick, and Stephen Root.

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage A set visit and interview with Jack Chisholm, Chris Hinojosa, Jamie Hitchcock, SOC and Jon Purdy By David Daut

“This was one of the first things camera operator Jamie Hitchcock said to me during my visit to the set of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, where they were pre-shooting several scenes for the episode “A Snotty Attitude and a Party on a School Night.” Georgie & Mandy is one of vanishingly few multi-camera sitcoms that still shoots with a live studio audience, so my visit to set on a Monday saw them working on the scenes for that week’s episode that would be too logistically tricky to capture in front of a live audience. For instance, one of the sequences shot that day was a montage involving the 18

SOCIETY OF CAMERA OPERATORS · SOC.ORG

two child actors portraying Georgie and Mandy’s daughter, CeeCee, where the two parents struggle to adjust to sleeping with CeeCee in their bed. These scenes are then cut together in rough form to be played back on screens for the audience to react to the following night. Since the earliest days of television, sitcoms have been a staple of the medium, with I Love Lucy in particular cementing the shape and structure of a multi-camera comedy, shot in front of a live studio audience. These days, the multi-cam sitcom is a much rarer breed—especially those shot with a live audience. By my count, there are only five currently shooting in L.A. Though these shows rarely enjoy the critical accolades given to supposedly more “serious” television, they have long been a core component of the industry structure, helping to keep the whole machine humming along. With all that in mind, I was eager to get a firsthand look into the process of making one of these series. ...

Four Dollies On Set Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage An interview with Richard Esquivel, Ravi Gahunia, and Mark Pickens By David Daut

In addition to speaking with the camera operators of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage about what it’s like working on one of the few multi-camera sitcoms actively in production, Camera Operator wanted to include the perspective of the show’s dolly grips, given the series’ nowuncommon use of four dolly set-ups. We spoke with dolly grips Mark Pickens (A camera), Richard Esquivel (B camera), and Ravi Gahunia (X camera) about their work on Georgie & Mandy and what it’s like working on a multi-cam show with four dollies. C camera dolly grip Joe Rotta was unfortunately unavailable to participate in this interview. ... 20

Backrooms

An interview with Leonardo Harim, SOC and John Fleming By David Daut

 WATCH THE TRAILER

Courtesy of A24

Like so many internet “creepypastas”, the Backrooms concept originated from an unassuming post on a message board: a picture of an empty room in a furniture store with beige carpet and drab wallpaper, all bathed in a sickly yellow light. This photo inspired a web of crowd sourced mythology about a bizarre realm outside of reality, stalked by monsters. Beginning in 2022, young filmmaker Kane Parsons adapted the premise into a series of short films released on YouTube that steadily garnered a cult following. This year, his feature film expansion of The Backrooms series hit theaters and quickly became something of a phenomenon, grossing more than $400 million off of a reported budget of only $10 million and becoming one of the most talked about films of the first half of the year. From getting lost inside the 30,000 square foot set made up of impossible, intentionally disorienting architecture to capture a look for the film that creates a permeating sense of unease, 24

SOCIETY OF CAMERA OPERATORS · SOC.ORG

Multimedia Feature Camera Operator spoke with A camera and Steadicam operator Leonardo Harim, SOC along with second AC John Fleming to learn more about what was involved with shooting Backrooms. For whatever reason, the world doesn’t quite seem to fit Clark. His wife has thrown him out after a drunken outburst, and he now sleeps in the show room of his struggling furniture store. His therapist encourages him to break out of destructive cycles and forge healthier paths forward, but why does he need to change? After all, it’s not his fault that the world dealt him a bad hand. One night, as Clark is settling in with a nightcap, he notices a strange light coming from the other side of the wall in the basement of his furniture store. As he steps through this portal, he finds himself in a world that is uncanny and bizarre and just maybe the place he belonged all along. Backrooms is directed by Kane Parsons from a screenplay by Will Soodik, and stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell.

Game Changer

An interview with Graham Ehlers Sheldon, Phillip Jackson, Lili Soto, Simone Williams, AJ Young, and Kevin Stiller By David Daut

The basic pitch for Game Changer is deceptively simple: it’s a game show starring improv comedians, where the game is different every time. Players don’t know the rules until they start the game and must figure out the nature of the game on the fly. From that starting point, the show has a propensity for taking wild left turns, veering off into absurdity, and doubling down on the bit, in an ever-escalating series of silly challenges. Over its eight seasons, Game Changer has done everything from riffs on simple games like Simon Says, to multi-part recreations of reality competition shows like Survivor, to unhinged Rube Goldbergean concepts that defy easy explanation, like “Count the Rice” in the most recent season. 28

SOCIETY OF CAMERA OPERATORS · SOC.ORG

Multimedia Feature For this video feature, Camera Operator got to chat with several of the operators who work on Game Changer including Graham Ehlers Sheldon, Phillip Jackson, Lili Soto, Simone Williams, and AJ Young, as well as director of photography Kevin Stiller about what it’s like working on a series that can effectively be a different show every episode. Game Changer is created and hosted by Sam Reich, and releases on the Dropout streaming video service.
