The images are burnt into my mind… Once upon a time, on a coast not too far away, I sat mesmerised by the shapes and colours of fishes that suddenly appeared in the fleeting ‘window’ afforded by just the right wave. The realisation that there was life and wonder hidden by my own perspective captivated me forever. When I hit the water at age 6, it was “love at first immersion” and I knew immediately I had to learn everything about the things I was seeing. It was only a few years ago that I had another one of those ‘epiphanies’. While I will never complain about a life of science, I wasn’t giving my dreams the priority they deserved. My dreams lie in the open ocean; chasing the organised chaos of billfish, tuna, and sharks feeding on baitfish. It’s pure ecology unfolding in front of your eyes and far too epic to be seen just once, by just one. My purpose in life is to honour such experiences and “get the data to the people”. To this end, I bring several underwater camera ‘rigs’ containing Canon 5D series cameras and optics on the adventures. The Canon 15mm fish eye is my favourite lens for big animals. It means I have to build relationships and get super close to frenzying animals, but I’m strangely comfortable with that. More recently, I have configured a Sony A9 and 16-35mm rig specifically for frenetic action. As an ‘available light’ speed machine; this is simply the best camera I have ever touched. Sony has certainly touched me too; in a completely above board kind of way I might add ;). The speed, the autofocus and the customisation have completely liberated my style and thinking. I can’t wait to see what the sonyalpha can do on the next open ocean adventure. I hope that’s another story... Matt Kleczkowski Marine Scientist and Freelance Underwater Photographer
