to the June edition of the Camden magazine We know the next five years will be tough financially for Camden as our funding will have been cut in half by 2018. So far we’ve coped well and continued to deliver progress in key areas but there is a limit to what residents, employers and the voluntary sector can cope with. On pages 22 and 23 you can read the latest on our progress to meet our financial challenge and how you can get involved with giving your views.

F

ollowing the result of the general election, here in Camden we are working hard to understand what the new Conservative government’s policies will mean for our services and residents. In particular we await more information about the impacts on areas like housing and childcare where we have made a real difference locally through our house building programme CIP and maintaining 25 hours free childcare.

In addition to the changes in Central Government we have some changes in our Camden Council administration. Following a meeting of our Labour group on May 11 I was pleased to be confirmed again in my role as Leader of the Council.

It’s an incredible honour, and despite the challenges I am proud to be leading an organisation which is committed to doing our best to improve the lives of our residents.

There are some changes to our Cabinet and you can find out more about this at camden.gov.uk/ democracy and there will also be a feature on the new Cabinet in the July edition of the magazine.

We also have a new Mayor, Councillor Larraine Revah, who was previously Deputy Mayor and takes over the role from Councillor Lazzaro Petragnoli. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Lazzaro for his fantastic work over the last year and to warmly

welcome Larraine into her new role which I know she will excel in.

This edition of the magazine focuses on apprentices, with information on apprenticeships for young people and adults. I’m so pleased you can read about how our adult apprenticeship pilot has helped Denise Browne, a mother, return to work after having her children. It’s something that I believe in passionately as they bring huge benefits to both apprentices and employers – read more about Denise’s story on pages 16 and 17. You can also read about the local jobs which have been created for local people through our Community Investment Programme on pages 18 and 19.

Finally, there’s an update on one of the biggest issues we face; the impact on Camden of the High Speed 2 rail link. With the Government remaining committed to the project we are continuing to work hard to reduce the negative effects on our residents and businesses and get the best possible outcome for Camden people. Pages 26 and 27 have more information on this.

This year’s celebration of sport will take place at Parliament Hill on Sunday 12 July from 1 to 5.30pm.

With free activities, sports coaching, dance and Zumba classes, there is something for all the family to enjoy and get moving more.

Move and dance with classes and performances at the bandstand.

One of Britain’s first rock ‘n’ roll bands, The Bruvvers, is confirmed to take the stage alongside reggae band Sista Beloved and other local musicians.

Brave the climbing wall, attack an assault course, take on the inflatable track challenge and grab one of your five-a-day from our smoothie bike. There’s facepainting and activities for our younger residents too.

This year’s event will be run in partnership with the City of London Corporation, Pro-Active Camden and COO-L. Give it a Go! is part of a year-round programme of activities available to residents in Camden.

Jamie’s Food Revolution comes to NW5 Campaigning celebrity chef Jamie Oliver brought his Food Revolution Day to Kentish Town with a day of cooking, healthy eating and fun for the pupils of Rhyl Primary School.

Jamie praised Rhyl pupils for growing, cooking and eating their own food and said: “There are more and more schools like this across the country but this should be in every school. This will be the first generation that teaches their parents about healthy eating.”

Jamie, colleagues from his FoodTube internet channel and the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation, were at Rhyl for the day to promote his global campaign to put compulsory food education on the school curriculum.

Helen Connor, headteacher of Rhyl Primary School, said: “We are thrilled to have been chosen to play such an important part in hosting Food Revolution Day 2015.

“We are so proud to have been recognised for the excellent work we do at Rhyl in teaching children about growing and cooking food. Jamie and his chefs cooked up a storm with our children during the day.

“Rhyl is taking a lead in educating children and families to cook healthy meals and fight obesity.

We have launched our fund-raising project to build a state of the art teaching and community kitchen in our school car park. This will be a beacon of best practice in food education, as well as a training venue for schools, educators and the community.”

Family nurses support young mums A Family Nurse Partnership, a voluntary home visiting programme for first-time young mums, aged 19 or under, has launched in Camden.

A specially-trained family nurse visits the young mum regularly, from early pregnancy until the child is two. The FNP programme aims to help young mums to: • have a healthy pregnancy • improve their child’s health and development • plan their own futures and achieve their aspirations.

The FNP programme is free and open to first-time mums (and dads or partners, if mums want them to take part) aged 19 and under.

Your nurse can help you plan for your future. Together you decide what you want and how to make it happen.

Speaking at a launch event in Camden, young mum Lyndsey Marling said: “My family nurse has been a consistent support, telling me about play groups, helping me to meet other young mums and advising me about getting back into college.”

News in brief Community conversation

on dog control

On Sunday 17 May, a community conversation on dog control at the Arlington Conference Centre, saw residents give their views on issues around dog control. We wanted to find out: •W hat aspects of dog control are most important to residents - for example, when and where dogs should be on leads, and how this affects residents •T he steps residents think we and partners can take to address these points •T he impact residents think these steps might have on others •T he ways in which residents think the impact could be managed.

This community conversation followed our public consultation on the Antisocial Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 that took place in January. Participants told us they would welcome a further discussion on dog control and to consider the requirement for dogs to be on leads in some public spaces.

New council building is the UK’s greenest Five Pancras Square has been recognised as the UK’s most energy efficient and sustainable building of its type.

At 5 Pancras Square the improved facilities for residents include two pools, a fitness gym, café, library and customer service teams.

The community facility has been provided at no additional cost to Camden’s council tax payers by selling old inefficient council buildings.

The building uses sustainable technology to help drastically reduce its carbon footprint and make annual estimated savings on energy costs, of more than £500,000.

The building in King’s Cross has been assessed as BREEAM Outstanding under the international environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings. The final score for the project was 97.6% the highest BREEAM rating ever achieved for a mixed development building, with maximum 100% in four assessment categories.

The building been recognised with a number of awards, including the Royal Institute of British Architects Sustainability Award for London and South East region.

Keeping Camden clean this summer

Thank you for your continued support for our Clean Camden campaign to crack down on littering, dog fouling and fly-tipping.

In response to your reports about issues around the borough, our education and enforcement teams are continuing to carry out dog fouling, litter and fly-tipping patrols.

Our cans of pink chalk spray continue to be popular, with residents spraying dog poop pink in order to embarrass irresponsible dog owners.

During patrols the team has handed out over 1,200 fixed penalty notices of ÂŁ80 each since November 2013. These fines were issued to people littering and to businesses who were not disposing of their waste correctly.

Please get in touch if you would like to organise an event or if you spot a place or person that is undermining our attempts to rid the borough of dog fouling, littering or fly-tipping.

You can also help to keep Camden clean by organising or taking part in a community clean-up. We can provide litter-pickers and gloves for your event.

Housing shortage solutions We’re bringing hundreds of empty homes back into use.

In the last two months we’ve brought four more empty properties into use as additional homes for local people to live in. The Camden High Street properties – two-bedroom flats and studio flats – have helped house families in better properties at more affordable rents.

These new homes were made available as part of our grants scheme to turn unoccupied, privately-owned homes into available housing for single people and families.

Our solution Every empty property is a lost home that could go to a Camden family. Vacant houses also attract vandalism, crime and blight the local area. That’s why the Council encourages owners to bring properties back into use by offering grants and our expertise. In return, they house a family or someone in need of a home.

We also charge 150% council tax on properties left empty for over two years to deter landlords from just leaving them vacant. In addition, we’re boosting our empty homes team to ensure this vital

work continues as part of our drive to tackle the borough’s housing shortage and provide homes to people on our waiting list.

How you can help The newly-refurbished properties in Camden High Street were made possible after a local resident told us about an empty commercial property in their local area.

Thanks to this report we contacted the owner and helped them bring the property back into use. We then secured a deal to use the homes for Camden tenants for 10 years. Your reports about empty homes really do make a difference.

Meet the new Mayor of Camden The new Mayor of Camden will be making disability issues her number one priority during her term in office. about 140 services across England.

Her theme for the year will be to promote awareness and a greater understanding of the daily difficulties faced by people with disabilities.

Cllr Revah, who succeeded Cllr Lazzaro Pietragnoli, said: “As a parent of a severely disabled daughter and a son with special educational needs, I know how tough it can be for the whole family when caring for a disabled child.

Gospel Oak Councillor Larraine Revah, who has a severely disabled daughter and a son with special education needs, became the new Mayor of Camden at a ceremony on 20 May. She will be raising money for her chosen charity KIDS, which cares for more than 8,000 disabled children, young people and their families every year by delivering

“KIDS were there for me when I needed their help and support during the first difficult months when my daughter Maya was born prematurely.

“I am so pleased to now be in a position as Mayor to help promote and raise awareness of the wonderful work they do and to raise much-needed funds to help them continue this very worthwhile work.”

Cllr Revah was elected ward councillor for Gospel Oak in 2010.

She has been Chair of the Children,

Schools and Families Scrutiny Committee; Cabinet Member for Children Schools and Families and since 2011 has served as the Older People’s Champion. She also chairs the Quality of Life Panel and sits on the Sheltered Blocks and Sensory Reform panels.

She has worked until recently as older people’s service manager at a local community centre and has involved herself in many volunteer and charitable activities, including working one-to-one with disabled children.

Cllr Revah has also volunteered as a portage worker, which entails carrying out home visits for preschool children and their families in Camden who have additional support needs.

Camden Summer University is back Camden Summer University offers young people aged 13 to 19 fantastic free courses hosted by some of London’s biggest names.

Sadia Isdani, 16, joined CSU as a peer motivator last summer after finishing Summer University her GCSEs at Camden peer motivator School for Sadia Isdani Girls and she plans to take part again this year.

“I also joined in some of the courses myself, such as the women’s self-defence, which was really fun. It was my first time but I will be joining in again this year and I would encourage others to do the same. You gain confidence and meet lots of other young people.”

Feature Schools have taken full ownership of their Active Spaces and will aim to maximise school and community use and build new relationships with the local community. Active Spaces are intended for use by the host schools, parent teacher associations, children’s services, community clubs and local sports organisations.

Playgrounds get an extreme makeover Camden Active Spaces are imaginative, challenging structures and creatively landscaped areas in the playgrounds of seven schools designed to help pupils, local children and families to be more physically active during and outside the school day.

The schools were chosen after bidding to have underused or neglected areas of their playgrounds transformed into an Active Space.

The finished designs include climbing structures, rope and timber trails, trampolines, football pitches, outdoor play and gym equipment.

Camden Active Spaces are at the following primary schools: • Argyle; Torriano Junior; Torriano Infant; Carlton and St Dominic’s.

Children at each school are also taking part in a university study to evaluate the impact on their physical activity and health.

Active Spaces is a partnership project run by the Council’s Sports and Physical Activity Team and Children, Schools and Families; Camden Clinical Commissioning Group; the Pro-Active Camden partnership and Camden and Islington Public Health.

Jemima Wade, head of Argyle Primary School, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the new playground. It is fun, challenging and looks great. The children have already developed their confidence and discovered new talents.”

John Dowd, head of Haverstock School, said: “This has rejuvenated a part of the playground that was completely underused. Already there are queues to use the machines. What was a very passive space is now a very active one.”

Young and older people get together Camden Intergenerational Week 2015 saw our young and older residents join a week of fun and informative events that brought people of all ages together to celebrate and encourage interaction between the generations.

Together young and older people enjoyed nearly 30 different performances, workshops and activities across the borough – from dancing and discussion, bingo and knitting to crafts and gardening, singing and films.

Helen Zazzara, from Primrose Hill, went to a bingo session held by students at Haverstock School.

She said: “It’s wonderful to get the older and younger generations together. Children realise that older people have a sense of humour, and they can learn so much from each other. Older people are quite

scary to the kids, and vice versa, so this kind of thing really helps.”

Haverstock student Phoebe Maniatopoulou said: “It’s important to help us be more grown up and act more like adults. We kind of see the future and we help them to remember the past so it’s a good relationship. It’s really fun and really nice how we interact with older people. I think that more people should be able to do it.”

The festival was organised by residents and about 40 local partner organisations, including

Age UK Camden, Haverstock School and Camden Community Nurseries, with the aim of creating positive connections between generations in Camden.

Cllr Pat Callaghan, former Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said: “Older people are contributing more to our society than ever before and this week of events was designed to celebrate that. We want people of all ages to live well and play an active role in their community. Bringing younger and older people together is a great way of doing that.”

Cllr Lazzaro Pietragnoli, former Mayor of Camden, said: “Intergenerational work doesn’t just happen once a year – it happens all year round. It helps different people to get know each other and this week has shown some of the work we have been doing to bring the generations together.”

Learning while earning Denise Browne was keen to get back into work but, with young daughters, she worried about juggling work and home life.

Then she saw an advert for a Camden adult apprenticeship.

Denise, 37, from Swiss Cottage, said: “My children were both at school and I was ready to think about a career again. When I saw the advert at the Jobcentre, I thought ‘This is something I want to do.’

“So I applied for an adult apprenticeship, was accepted, and started working towards a level 2 NVQ in business administration. I was also learning about document control, which is a career in itself.

The apprenticeship was great – it built my confidence and helped me get back into work, with pay at the London Living Wage level.

“Six weeks into my apprenticeship, the engineering company where I was placed, offered me a permanent full-time job with flexibility to fit around my childcare. I can also continue the apprenticeship and get my qualification.”

Tom Storey, director of K10, the organisation that set up Denise’s apprenticeship said: “Camden Council is very innovative in the way it works. These adult apprenticeships aimed to remove a barrier for women with young children who want to return to work and help them deal with the transition. Document control is a

key job on a construction site where keeping records up to date and organised is important for safety.

“There are huge advantages for employers – people like Denise are reliable and committed, with a very positive attitude. The company that Denise is now working for had been looking for a permanent

Apprenticeships for 16 to 24s If you’re leaving school or sixth-form college this year, having completed GCSEs or A-levels, and you’re not sure about your next move, maybe you’d like to consider an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship can be a great introduction to working life, the way into a career or an alternative to university if you would rather earn while you learn. While most apprentices move into permanent work when they complete their training, doing an apprenticeship doesn’t stop you from going on to university afterwards as well – and you’ll have had the opportunity to save some money towards your fees too.

Camden Apprenticeships has vacancies for people aged 16 to 24 all year round, in a wide range of different sectors. Business administration, IT, creative and digital media, facilities services, construction and digital marketing are just a few of the areas where we can offer contracts. Most of our employers are in Camden, and some of our apprenticeships are with the Council. In 2014/15, the team placed 256 people into apprenticeships.

Local jobs created through CIP Nineteen year-old Hayley Heath, from King’s Cross, is one of many local residents who has gained employment thanks to our Community Investment Programme (CIP).

The CIP is our 15-year programme to invest money in schools, homes and community facilities.

We’re doing this by redeveloping or selling buildings that are underused or expensive to maintain. This will help us generate money that is not otherwise available to reinvest into improving other services and facilities. This also means we’re able to create local job opportunities on CIP building sites across the borough.

So far, we have created 100 apprenticeship placements and 60 work placements.

We’re working closely with contractors on CIP sites to place local residents into jobs and apprenticeships. Higgins, the main contractor on Bourne Estate and Plender Street sites, is one employer which has been working with the Council’s economic development team to create good quality positions for local residents.

Best candidate for the job Last June, Hayley took up the role of trainee site administrator. She was selected from 12 potential candidates and shortlisted by the King’s Cross Construction and Skills Centre (KXCSC). Plunged into a varied administrative role consisting of ticket delivery, invoicing, waste management and general site-based admin, she quickly found her feet.

Hayley said: “I was working in retail for two years and felt that my career was going nowhere. When the opportunity came up, through KXCSC for an administrator at Higgins I was really interested.

Although I had no training in administration, I heard that Higgins would provide training so I jumped at the chance.”

She has been heavily involved with the local school, Richard Cobden Primary School, where she was instrumental in arranging a health and safety visit by the Higgins mascot ‘Phil Safe’. After watching a DVD on the dangers to be found on building sites, the children at the school produced posters for the site hoarding, highlighting the dangers and warning people to be safe and stay away.

Hayley said: “I’m really enjoying site life and studying for my NVQ level 2 in business administration.

My confidence has grown and I’m definitely part of the team.

I meet up with the other site administrators occasionally to share knowledge and we all help each other if any problems arise.

I can’t thank Higgins enough for giving me this opportunity.”

Thank you to everyone who is recycling as much as they can.

Every tonne of waste you recycle saves money, as recycling is £50 cheaper per tonne than waste disposal.

You can request new or replacement recycling containers (wheelie bins, recycling boxes and food caddies) by contacting camden.gov.uk/recycling. If you live on an estate or in a high-rise flat you can also order free caddy liners.

Regis Road Recycling and Re-use Centre can accept even more items for recycling, including large electrical items, wood and items for reuse.

There are also on-street locations for recycling paper, card, cans, plastic, cartons and glass and containers for small waste electronic equipment you may have such as hairdryers and kettles.

However, there is still a lot of food waste in rubbish bags, along with paper, plastic and card. On average, 70% of the content of a rubbish bag could be recycled. Our target is to recycle at least 40% of waste by 2020, so we need to move these items to recycling.

We are now working to make recycling easier for people living on estates and in flats above shops, and have successfully bid for £436,000 of government funding to pilot recycling incentives later this year.

So far you’ve helped us to recycle about 27% of Camden’s household rubbish.

Early years consultation launched We have launched a boroughwide consultation on changes to early education, childcare and children’s centres, as part of a new Camden Sure Start approach to services for children aged 0 to five and their families.

Building on the principles of the national Sure Start programme, we would continue to invest £25.5 million a year in providing early years services, limiting savings to £1.5 million.

Our aim is to ensure children have the best start in life and for us to focus resources on children and families with the greatest need.

We would provide early education

and childcare (nursery) places in all of our current children’s centres but children’s centre services – including drop-in or stay and play sessions – would change. We would spend less on drop-in / stay and play sessions but continue to invest in providing high quality sessions according to local need.

The proposals mean changes to some children’s centre services from 2016 and changes to how families will be able to take up council-provided early education and childcare places, which would begin in September 2015.

No children’s centre buildings would close but we would offer

a broader range of services, such as health, employment and housing advice, at five lead Camden Sure Start Children’s Centres.

Blooming marvellous Our annual Camden in Bloom competition is now officially open for applications from residents and businesses. This year, we aim to become ‘greener together’ and celebrate both the visual and environmental benefits of fantastic gardening and wider green projects within our community.

This is a great opportunity to get involved in making Camden even more beautiful. With more green spaces promoting better health and wellbeing, the benefits will continue far beyond the competition itself. We hope to encourage a more sustainable environment for current and future residents, and for participants to have a great time in the process.

An example of what can be achieved is last year’s winning Business Entrance entry from Cecil Sharp House. Not only did they turn a neglected area into a beautiful garden but, along with being decorative, the area is now highly ecological. Edible plants, including blueberries, basil and a range of edible flowers now grow there, and fertilisers have been replaced with natural and sustainable alternatives. The area

Community involvement, along with creative use of space, brought Camden Town Unlimited two second prizes last year, including second in the Best Balcony category. Jess Behar, along with her team, cleared and renovated a disused rooftop. The result is a space where people can now enjoy a sunny lunch or host an event, surrounded by wildflowers and an array of decorative ornaments.

Bringing together so many different people made the project a real team effort.

The judges were also impressed by the unconventional use of space in last year’s winning Best Environmental Project category.

Project manager Martin Thompson and the London Wildlife Trust, along with their team of volunteers, focused on improving biodiversity on the Regent’s Canal. The team conducted wildlife surveys,

The judges will also consider the benefit to the local community and the impact on the local environment. All prize-winners will receive a certificate and a voucher from the Camden Garden Centre. Winners will be announced in August with an award ceremony in September.

HS2: The post-election picture for Camden With the dust settling following the General Election, we’re continuing to respond to High Speed 2 (HS2) plans to secure the best deal for Camden.

The Government remains committed to building a high speed railway from Euston to Birmingham, with work due to start in 2017.

Camden’s position on HS2 is unchanged – we remain opposed to plans for HS2 that could bring more than a decade of disruption to Camden.

However, if HS2 does go ahead there’s action we can take together to reduce its effects on our residents and businesses.

A Euston for everyone We’re pushing for politicians and rail leaders to commit to a redeveloped Euston Station with all the tracks on one level, if HS2 goes ahead.

This would allow for decking above the station and tracks providing room for much-needed affordable homes for Camden families and new open space.

Using the Euston Area Plan (EAP) agreed by us, the Mayor of London and Transport for London, this station design could provide 1,400 to 1,900 affordable homes and 7,700 to 14,100 new jobs.

However, HS2’s current plans show a phased development of Euston, with the high speed lines not completed until 2033.

The new HS2 station would not be integrated with the current station, which would remain unaltered.

There’s currently no timescale or funding given for its redevelopment.

This throws away the opportunity for new affordable homes and new jobs for Camden and its residents.

A level station design would allow for pedestrian access through the station in all directions and could incorporate proposed transport improvements like Crossrail 2.

Crucially, any development at Euston must consider the area’s needs as a whole and minimise the impact of construction on residents and businesses, through measures including removing spoil by rail.

The impact of the Government’s plans for Euston will be revealed in a new Environmental Statement that will accompany an Additional Provision to the HS2 Bill.

We expect this change to plans for Euston to be submitted to Parliament in September. Once this has happened, you can then have your say on this by petitioning Parliament - provided you are directly affected. We can support you with the process of petitioning and will provide more information nearer the time.

Select Committee preparations We want protection for residents and businesses against years of construction disturbance – the increased noise, dust, congestion, more lorries and reduction of open space and air quality.

We’ll be arguing on any unresolved issues before a Select Committee of MPs, at the end of 2015, along with Camden residents and businesses who petitioned.

If you petitioned, we can help you prepare for Select Committee and will be writing to all petitioners to ask what type of support they might need. This might include help to get petitioners into groups, insight from petitioners who have already spoken before the Committee and some basic ‘Do’s and Don’ts’.

Replacement housing application We’ve secured funding from HS2 Ltd to build replacement homes for all Council tenants losing their flats if HS2 goes ahead. This payment also allows us to build enough new homes to offer resident leaseholders the opportunity to remain in the area.

We received residents’ comments on the designs of homes at a consultation in March and were set to submit a planning application as the Camden Magazine went to press. Providing planning permission is granted, residents should be able to move into their new homes throughout the second half of 2017 – before Silverdale, Eskdale and Ainsdale blocks and street properties on Cobourg Street and Melton Street are demolished.

We’re building 30 extra flats in this development. These are needed in case of changes in our tenants’ circumstances, construction delays on the other sites or for other resident leaseholders keen to stay.

If the flats are not needed for this, some will be sold privately to provide funding for the remaining flats to become much-needed new affordable homes for Camden residents. Any units sold privately will be marketed to local people first.

“Students are at the centre of what I am about”, says Acland Burghley’s new head Acland Burghley School’s new headteacher is Nicholas John, who takes up his post in September. Mr John, 40, is coming from an ‘outstanding’ secondary school where he is currently head of upper school (ages 14 to 19). less than four years – will arrive at Acland Burghley next term.

Mr John said: “I find the school’s location inspirational. It serves the most diverse and vibrant community imaginable and it will be a real privilege to work there.

Improvements are under way at Acland Burghley, in Tufnell Park, with a new sixth form block, refurbishment of the main building and a new ‘Active Space’ in the school grounds (see page 14).

Ofsted also recently noted that students’ behaviour has been ‘transformed’ under interim executive head Susan Higgins, with the school heading ‘in the right direction’ overall according to the inspectors.

Regent High School celebrates its inspirational new building More than 200 people celebrated the opening of Regent High School’s stunning new building

by Nobel Prize-winning UCL neuroscientist Professor John O’Keefe, who sent his sons to one of the school’s predecessors.

The Grand Opening marked the completion of a £25 million refurbishment and rebuilding project to create state-of-the-art learning spaces for students.

Headteacher Rosemary Leeke said: “I am immensely proud to be celebrating the completion of the project to refurbish and rebuild Regent High School – creating a stimulating new school for our aspirational young people - and I am glad that our patience has been rewarded with a

beautiful and inspirational new learning space.”

Other guests at the event included the Leader of Camden Council, Cllr Sarah Hayward, and Camden’s Cabinet Member for Children, Cllr Angela Mason, as well as many of the school’s prestigious partners, local residents and student ambassadors.

trengthen links with local primary schools Acland Burghley School has launched a Junior Dance Company for pupils from local primary schools.

Thirty-four children aged nine to 11 joined the classes after about 80 children attended auditions for the new dance group, based at the Tufnell Park school’s dance and music block.

Sixteen students from the Acland Burghley Youth Dance Company help to lead the sessions for the primary pupils. The classes were set up by Marita Young, head of dance at Acland Burghley School, with the help of governor Madeleine Holt.

The Junior Dance Company is run

by Kate Mummery, of the Zamirakate Dance Company, who helped prepare Acland Burghley students for the recent Camden Schools Dance Festival at The Place in King’s Cross.

Ms Young said: “I would like our students to be able to run the Junior Dance Company themselves at some point but we need to equip them to do that. We are planning to have a performance for parents in late June or early July.”

If drama is your thing, RADA’s MA Theatre Lab is performing the Greek play Eumenides on 13 June at 2pm at Ampthill Square and on 21 June at 4pm at Fellows Road.

For art lovers, Walls on Walls is a collaborative project between the community and an artist duo, where local history and tradition is brought to life in new works of art created on-site. Hosted on Camden’s Castle Road Estate, the project is now on display and will culminate in a launch and exhibition on 18 June from 3 to 6pm.

What better way to explore the rich artistic history of Camden than by joining the Camden 50 radical theatre walking tour on 21 June? The tour will reveal the amazing history of generations of artists who have shaped present day theatre. Influences on physical, visual and performance art will be explored, to highlight the incredible impact on today’s theatrical

landscape. The tour starts from King’s Cross mainline railway station concourse at 11am.

For those interested in all things fashion, there is a talk on 1950s American fashion at the House of Illustration on 23 June by fashion historian Carolyn Richardson. Fashion, jewellery and architecture will also be among projects featured at the degree show at Central Saint Martins from 24 to 28 June.

For a fun and engaging exhibition, the Grant Museum of Zoology will be opening late from 6.30 to 8pm on 23 June for the special event ‘Dinosaurs! Of Victorian London’, where the first model

dinosaurs, originally unveiled in 1854, will be on display.

And for children and adults alike, The Jewish Museum is hosting a retrospective of Judith Kerr, the creator of some of the country’s most-loved children’s books, until 14 October. Come and join Tiger, Mog and Pink Rabbit for an enlightening showcase, including drawings from Kerr’s childhood in Nazi Germany.

There is still time to visit the Zabludowicz Collection: 20 Years, which is on until 16 August.

Rarely seen artworks by more than 30 leading artists, including Damien Hirst and Samara Golden, will be on display to demonstrate the collection’s evolution since its inception in 1990s London, and its commitment to supporting artists early in their careers.

We also recommend you check out Forensics: The Anatomy of Crime at The Wellcome Collection,

which is on until 21 June, and visit The British Library to see the extraordinary Cornelia Parker’s Magna Carta (An Embroidery) – a contemporary artwork created for the digital era.
