“
God is good all the time, all the time God is good.
Fr. Joseph Capella
As we reflect back on the school year, we realize how grateful we are to be a part of a community that supports our mission and teachings. As you will read in this edition of the CCHS Magazine, our faculty are so dedicated to the formation of our teenagers ’ minds and souls Our families continue to work in tandem with the school community to instill the values of faith, honor, and loyalty Our wonderful alumni and friends are so generous with their time, treasure and talent to provide the opportunities to allow our students to build strong foundations. Pope John Paul said, “The mission of the Catholic school is the integral formation of students, so that they may be true to their condition as Christ’s disciples and as such work effectively for the evangelization of culture and for the common good of society ” We are so blessed to carry out this mission every day with such great partnerships to continue graduating Camden Catholic students that will go out to change the world.
Our guide for this mission is our Catholic faith but also a good strategic plan. This year we accomplished several goals on this plan with a new schedule, new electives offered, continued professional development for design thinking in classrooms, and the beginnings of refurbishing our classroom furniture We are working with the faculty this summer on various new goals from the plan which include such things as concentrating on student wellness and development, growing back our vibrant school community from the COVID 19 interruption, continuing to provide professional development for our teachers in innovative teaching methods, creating a three year facilities plan, and various other related items Our strong administrative team, along with our faculty and staff, will continue to provide extraordinary experiences guided by this plan.
We will miss the guiding light of Fr Joseph Capella as we continue to grow Fr Joe inspired all of us to practice our faith and carry out the mission of Jesus to love one another He termed it “Calvary Love” in his last words to the community at graduation
May we always remember the spirit of Fr Joe and his impactful statement of “God is good all the time, all the time God is good” as we continue to live our Catholic faith in the Camden Catholic community.
Go Irish!
During the 2021 2022 school year, the Camden Catholic community celebrated its 135th year Since 1887, CCHS has educated diverse learners and developed tomorrow ’ s innovative leaders steeped in the Catholic tradition of mercy As a Board of Trustees, we are thankful for the unwavering stewardship of President, Mary Whipkey and Principal, Heather Crisci, the diligent efforts of our Administration and the teaching excellence of our faculty. The school continued to navigate through the challenges of the pandemic while gratefully experiencing the return of our traditions in the performing arts and athletics as well as gathering once again to recognize our gifted alumni with a Hall of Fame ceremony after a two year hiatus Of course, none of our accomplishments would be possible without the counsel and guidance of the Diocese of Camden and His Excellency Bishop Sullivan and Superintendent, Dr. Bill Watson and we thank them for their vigorous support.
CCHS continues to expand its academic excellence through a focus on innovation with an emphasis on design thinking within a STEM mindset Consistent with the CCHS Strategic Plan, our expanded curriculum is state of the art, with courses in design thinking, cyber security, data analytics, genetics and biotechnology, great minds of the Christian Tradition, piano lab and robotics.
As an innovator in Catholic education, Camden Catholic also offers students an opportunity to participate in college prep, honors and advanced placement courses
Camden Catholic celebrated many milestones during the year, especially the recognition of 100 years of performing arts. In April, we celebrated a weekend of performing arts events capped off by a performance by alumni and students featuring highlights of musicals from the past century of The Arts at CCHS. In the classroom, our senior class demonstrated its excellence by earning college academic scholarships worth over $26 million Finally, continuing its tradition of excellence in athletics, the Irish were conference champs in several sports and celebrated the only state wrestling champion in South Jersey this year in Martin Cosgrove
The Camden Catholic Board of Trustees is comprised of professionals from all walks of life who offer their time, talent and treasure for the betterment of the CCHS community I would like to especially recognize and thank Father John Fisher, OSFS, Rector of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, who will step down from the Board Father Fisher brought his significant academic experience to Chair the Board’s Academic Committee and his insights assisted the Administration in the development of a new learning model with emphasis on academic innovation. I personally offer my gratitude for his wise counsel and guidance as the Board navigated the challenges presented over the past few years.
I also extend a grateful welcome to our newly appointed trustee, Anne Hartman, principal of Christ the King Regional School in Haddonfield Anne previously served as a Board member and returns to share her academic insights and expertise in furthering our innovation initiatives.
The Board of Trustees extends its gratitude for the financial support provided by generous alumni and friends through our many advancement and development initiatives, including the Annual Fund, Irish Giving Day (including Classrooms of the Future), the 100 years celebration of the Performing Arts and the Spring Musical, the Hall of Fame, among other fundraising opportunities. Please keep Camden Catholic in your prayers and continue your generosity.
Remembering Father Joe Father Capella loved Camden Catholic and he constantly shared his enthusiasm for learning with the Board of Trustees, always focusing us on the spiritual mission of the school He fought the good fight and lived his life with enduring faith while never giving up hope He showed the Board and everyone in the Camden Catholic community how to live a Catholic life May he rest in peace
Jack Wixted, Chairman, Board of TrusteesAf ter a two year hiatus, the Camden Catholic Hall of Fame returned, welcoming over 300 guests to celebrate the nine individuals and three state championship teams who are exempla r y members of the CCHS alumni and faculty family Several thousand dollars was raised to benefit the Hall of Fame Scholarship Fund, which provides several $1,000 schol arships to deser ving students annually
Among the honorees were retired faculty mem bers Jack Phipps and Coach Chrisy Palladino; three alumni PhDs: Chris Burns ‘80, Stephanie Tor tu ‘64 and Michael Canaris ‘98; Emmy
award winning documentarian Bill Nicoletti ‘82; and athletic standouts Sean Vliet ‘92 (soccer), Brian Krulikowski ‘87 (football) and Michael Tallman ‘91 (football, basket ball and baseball). The legendar y Irish Boys Basketball State Champions of 2001 and 2003 as well as the first ever Irish Sof tball State Champions of 1986 were also lauded for their incredible achieve ments as student athletes.
Thank you to the many suppor ters of this event, as well as to the Hall of Fame committee members

The class of 2022 is unique in many ways Beyond their resilience in working their way through high school during a pandemic (touring college campuses and interviewing with college admissions representatives either vir tually or wearing a mask, leading Link Crew with a nervous group of incoming freshmen outdoors and wearing masks, auditioning on Zoom for the spring musical and making the most of many altered school events) they still came through their four years at CCHS with an incredible yet unique Irish Experience.
This class made Camden Catholic history by being the very first CCHS students to be a part of our burgeoning robotics program, having the incredible honor to open and dedicate the St. Thomas Aquinas Innovation Lab with Bishop Sullivan last September as he blessed the lab and learned about our hopes and plans for the space, from 3D printing to coding innovative new programs and building robots for competition.
Led by science department faculty member, Dr. An Nguyen, Director of Robotics and STEM Mentor, several seniors completed senior research projects. Although “science related,” the themes were diverse, and ranged from pediatric prosthetics to museum exhibitions. These projects are examples of the
focus of our entire school community this year as we worked together under an initiative to collaborate across curricula using design thinking to problem solve in order to IMAGINE, CREATE, and INNOVATE.
“At CCHS we aim to develop thinkers and tinkerers, problem solvers and makers. Students find something that sparks their curiosity, learn all about it, and transform that knowledge into a tangible product,” says Dr. Nguyen. “Along the way, they don't just learn about the engineering process or about research, they conduct literature surveys, practice laboratory techniques, analyze and evaluate data, brainstorm solutions, and build prototypes. Each project has its own focus too. Some involve diving into some mechanical or electrical engineering. Others involve computer science, filmography, or environmental studies
Here we highlight seniors who lived the motto IMAGI NE, CREATE, I NNOVATE to make their mark in a variety of ways at CCHS, from academics to social justice service, to the arts and athletics. These students have set the tone for the future of design thinking and goal setting at Camden Catholic.
Donaji Medieta Silva is the first Camden Catholic student to earn a Questbridge Match, and not to just any university, but to the incomparable Ivy League institution, Princeton University Donaji arrived at CCHS from Harry C Sharp Elementary in Camden During her four years here at CCHS, she has excelled in her academic growth, being guided by the mentorship of Dr An Nguyen Donaji was one of 1,674 students selected from over 16,500 applicants to be named a QuestBridge Match for the class of 2026 As a QuestBridge scholarship recipient, Donaji has earned a full scholarship to Princeton University Match Scholarship Recipients are admitted early to QuestBridge college partners with full four year scholarships that are provided by the colleges and universities, ensuring for these students and their families that an education at a top college can be affordable.
QuestBridge s 45 college partners include top liberal arts colleges such as Amherst, Pomona, and Williams and exceptional research universities such as Duke, Princeton, Stanford, UChicago, and Yale The Match Scholarship is offered as part of a generous financial aid package provided by the college that covers the full cost of attendance, including tuition, room and board, books and supplies, and travel expenses
Robert Gardner was no stranger to Camden Catholic when he arrived as an excited freshman in 2017 As one of Pip and Trish Gardner’s eight children (including Greg ‘11, Patrick ‘15, Theresa ‘18, Mary ‘20 and Caroline ‘24), Robert participated in Camden Catholic theater programs as a child and was frequently on campus thanks to his family’s involvement in The Arts at CCHS His growing talents were immediately apparent when he officially started his own high school career, both in the classroom and on the stage His musical pursuits will continue as Robert received the prestigious Brooks Scholarship to Holy Cross, which is a full tuition scholarship given to a music major. “In addition to studying piano performance, I will pursue a second major in International Studies In terms of a future career, I have an open mind towards a few different avenues, but have always wanted to become a lawyer I hope to receive clarity over the next four years, ” Robert shares
Beyond The College of the Holy Cross, he was also accepted to Georgetown University, Boston College, Fordham University, St Joseph’s University (Presidential Merit Scholarship, Musical Theatre Scholarship), Catholic University of America (Honors Scholarship) and St John’s College Maryland (Trustee Scholarship)
“The most impactful CCHS arts experience for me had to be involvement in the 100 Year Anniversary of musicals I accompanied the show on piano, and was able to meet countless alumni and hear about how important our program has been in their lives post graduation It was moving to see how far reaching Camden Catholic’s arts legacy is, and I felt blessed to play a role in such a once in a lifetime opportunity ”
Alicia Garlic was an innovator in many ways during her time at Camden Catholic, a quality which will serve her well as she heads to Cornell University to major in agricultural sciences, “which I’ll likely combine with a concentration in Society and Education,” she shares. “My dream is to provide fresh produce for people in low income urban areas ” A multi faceted individual who is a deep and creative thinker, Alicia not only succeeded as a member of the very first CCHS Robotics Team, but also was a student mentor who concepted and led the school’s very first Diversity Retreat “Alicia was able to create a space for Camden Catholic students from all backgrounds and walks of life to discuss their faith as it relates to their personal stories, diverse races and cultures,” says Jen LaRosa, Director of Campus Ministry. “At the retreat, around twenty students and I discussed all forms of human diversity and how we reflect God's image I hope that I've helped my high school classmates to feel seen, and that the Diversity Retreat can be one small step towards ushering in an era of inclusivity and social justice in the Camden Catholic community,” she said
Kelly Campbell is a fourth generation Camden Catholic graduate with a legacy that includes her uncle Monsignor Bob McDermott ‘60, her grandparents Jerry ‘56 and Kathy (McDermott) ‘57 Campbell and her mom Mary Jane ‘85 This legacy is perhaps what makes her involvement in the CCHS Robotics Program even more special when you consider her great grandparents Robert McDermott Sr and Catherine (Gross) were students in one of CCHS’ very first graduating classes in 1934 As one of the select group of senior robotics students, Kelly embarked on many incredible projects which have provided her with a solid foundation for her future as an engineering major at the University of Pittsburgh. Kelly’s senior research project, 3D Printed Pediatric Prosthetic Devices, focused on the ability 3D print prosthetics to change the medical field “Prosthetic devices can be affordably made, and can now be completely customizable e NABLE is a network of volunteers who use 3D printing to donate prosthetic hands to those who need them In my research, I pursued my interest in biomedical engineering and explored e NABLE's available resources to learn about the process of 3D printing prosthetic devices ”

It is rare to find a place in which the faculty and staff endure in service to one establishment for the length of time that many of our faculty have here at Camden Catholic. It is this very characteristic which leads so many families to choose CCHS, and alumni to reflect back on their time here with great love. Six faculty and staff members who are retiring this year ideally illustrate this call to serve.
Mr John Kearney celebrated 44 years of service in 2022 He has taught business, economics and history in his four decades of teaching at CCHS, in addition to befriending thousands o f s t u d e n t s a l o n g t h e w a y. M r. Kearney’s affable demeanor allowed students to both learn and laugh in his presence
Mr Frank Solometo spent 20 years serving the students of CCHS while sharing his strong faith with fellow faculty and the greater school community While teaching technology, Mr Solometo was able to be at the forefront of the computer science evolution, teaching students coding in his final year in the classroom A talented musician, he also participated in the CCHS liturgical music group, leading students to praise God through song
Mr Mike DeMeo was a member of the Camden Catholic faculty for 20 years, teaching religion and conversational German CCHS students lauded Mr DeMeo for his lectures, classroom debates and opening the door to new ways to con sider our faith Thank you, Mr DeMeo for your two decades of service, and for your assistance to your colleagues through leadership of the AV Club.
Mrs. Joann Rell is retiring after 20 years at Camden Catholic both in the classroom and as an assistant field hockey coach. Mrs. Rell’s enthusiastic support of both students and colleagues alike will be greatly missed, however we know she will not be a stranger on campus! She is a perennial Irish fan and supporter who we know will continue to cheer on our student-athletes and performers every chance that she gets.
Mrs. Angie Veneziani has loyally served CCHS as our school nurse. Her service to our entire school community, especially during the years of the Covid-19 pandemic, is so greatly appreciated. Mrs. Veneziani has taken incredible care of both our students, faculty and staff as we have navigated through these unprecedented times. We wish her the very best in her retirement!
Mrs. Janet Indelicato has spent 21 years as the backbone of our admissions and advancement department. She began her career volunteering for Monsignor Martin when he was principal, assisting with fundraising letters before being hired full time. During her time at CCHS she has continued to support our fundraising efforts while also assisting in the admissions office and in the main office.
Father Joe helped me become a better leader. He always pushed my classmates and I out of our comfort zones and encouraged us to try new things. One of my favorite memories was how excited he was to give us donuts as a reward for our hard work. He was always so giving when he came to class and reminded us of how thankful and proud he was to have us in his Ministry class. Father Joe made CCHS and the world a better place by always showing up and giving it his all. He always had a good lesson or words of encouragement to share with my classmates and I.
To me, Father Joe is a Saint on Earth. I was privileged to have him not once, but twice as a teacher, and as a role model for all four years. One of the lessons that he taught me was in freshman year religion class. We had started high school at the same time as Father Joe had accepted a job at Camden Catholic. He joked around that we were freshmen together. One of Father Joe’s favorite saints was St. Thomas Aquinas aka Tommy Aquinas. We learned the wise words “good is to be done and pursued and evil avoided.” Father Joe then introduced us to his own personal saying “God is good all the time and all the time God is good.” To me, this means that if we follow God’s will, we will be blessed with the goodness of God, and therefore will be far away from the producer of evil.
Father Joe went about his every day with an aura of peace. Even in stressful moments, he was always slow to anger, quick to forgive, and, as Psalm 86 says, “abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.” I aspire to live every day as he did. He taught me the true key to a happy fulfilled life.
Father Joe was an amazing priest and an even more amazing teacher. He taught Catholicism in a way that was easy to understand and welcoming, especially towards high school students. I have so many amazing memories of him, like eating lunch in his office with my friends and trying to make each other laugh when he was on the phone, but my favorite one may be the first day of my sophomore year when the entire school gathered in the auditorium for Mass. It was super hot, and in our thick uniform shirts we almost felt as if you were melting. After the Gospel Fr. Joe got up on the stage and asked “It’s hot right?!”, to which we all groaned and laughed in reply, he then said, “Hell is hotter, be good!”. This was the shortest and funniest
homily I had ever heard. The whole school shared a laugh, and the mood seemed to lighten, allowing us to enjoy the rest of Mass.
This is just one of the many examples as to how Fr. Joe simplified the complex ideas within Christianity and inspired his students to follow God’s word. I’m going to miss Father Joe very much, but I’m happy that he can now tell all of his jokes to God and finally be at peace. God is good all the time!
It is impossible to pick only one memory of Father Joe because he was present in all of my favorite moments during my time at Camden Catholic.
Whether it was Kairos, winning athletic championships, or graduation, Father Joe was always there with a smile and inspiring words. His love of and passion for all of his students is so clear in all of my CCHS memories.
Father Joe helped students and many people realize that having faith doesn’t mean being perfect. He was never judgemental and made anyone and everyone feel welcome into forming a relationship with God. The greatest lesson that I learned from Father Joe is to practice gratitude every day. No matter what struggles he faced, he never complained and was always thankful to God for the positive aspects of his life. He has inspired me to stop taking things for granted and thank God every day for my blessings.
The greatest lesson I learned from Father Joe is to be human. It’s ok to make mistakes, it’s ok to laugh, to love, to live life to the fullest, but to always be kind when doing so. I think my favorite memory of Father Joe is during the beginning of my freshman year. I asked if I could speak with him during my 4th period lunch, he agreed and we spent the whole 40 minutes talking about what it meant to know God, what it meant to be a Christian and to stand in your belief of who you are. Father Joe, in my opinion, was an embodiment of love. I think everybody needs a Father Joe in their life. He was a beacon of warmth, light and hope that you could feel before you even saw him. Even if you felt bad he always had a gumball machine full of M&Ms, a bucket of cheeseballs and some amazing advice. I truly think he helped me through some of the darkest times in my life without even knowing it. I carry him with me in my heart always.
Father Joe made CCHS and the world a better place not just by being a priest, but by being a counselor and friend. Father Joe had the unique gift of being a relatable priest who people were unafraid to go to about their struggles and questions about anything really, but also especially in regards to their faith. Father Joe knew his audiences well and was able to speak in such a way that we could all connect to his message. He spoke out when he was passionate about something he believed in, and he has inspired me to do the same. I wish I had taken advantage of the opportunity to talk to him more about anything and everything because he was someone who would open his heart and always put on his listening ears for anyone who needed him.
I am truly saddened by the loss of Fr. Joe. He meant so much to my friends and I as he supported us in the classroom and in our own individual endeavors. No matter how we performed he was always there to congratulate our basketball team and cheer us on. His inspiring words from his Christian Ministry class still help me in my daily life today.
The greatest lesson I learned from Father Joe is to be authentic and confident in oneself. He truly knew who he was and did not let outside pressure change his standards or views. He was a pleasure to be around because he was so secure in himself and used that security to instill authenticity and confidence in others. My favorite memory of him was sitting with him every day for lunch. The conversations held in his office with him and all of my friends was unlike any other experience. Father Joe made CCHS and the world a better place because he had an impact on every person he met. Even those that only met him once got to feel real love and peace from another human being. Those who interacted with him will be able to pass along the love and peace they were given.
Father Joe was a true guiding light for the students of Camden Catholic. Whether in his classroom, around the large table in his office, the sidelines of a football game or celebrating an all-school Mass, Father Joe connected with the students in a special way, leaving his legacy with them to carry through for generations to come.Time and money Rare are the people who say they have more than they can handle And yet they are often the ones who give most willingly Through the years Camden Catholic has been blessed by so many who have not only made monetar y donations but also shared their skills and expertise, their talents and treasures for the betterment of our school community. Some are known to us and others remain behind the scenes For the particular alumni showcased here, their gifts of time, talent, and treasure continue to provide students with tangibles like supplies, books, equipment, and tuition assistance, as well as other invaluable benefits such as instruction, guidance, insight, and example Their philanthropy
is an important part of what keeps the Camden Catholic family connected and thriving
Recent grads of the Cherr y Hill campus and alumni who graduated decades ago from the original Camden Catholic High School in Camden have maintained their connection to their alma mater through annual financial contributions, seasonal leadership roles in school sports, plays and clubs, monthly pledges, and even a daily presence in the classroom The generosity is as big hearted and unique as each of the donors. Their reasons for giving back are also unique but all are linked by love the love they all have for a place that shaped them and produced memories that they will not allow to fade
Transformation is on Will Walker’s mind when he considers why he gives back to his alma mater A 2015 graduate, Will reflects on the “chaos going on in the world today” as he both worries about and marvels at what lies ahead for future generations. His impetus for making the donations he does to CCHS is one of hope, hope that the transformation that teens are poised for will be a positive one He recognizes that “there is a lot of pressure on the education system, including teachers, administration, and policy leaders, to be a positive influence” on young people Will says he was “pleasantly surprised at the rate of change that Camden Catholic was willing to go through to modernize their teaching methods while staying true to their traditional values” during the various encounters with Covid As he sees it, “Covid has sped up the digital transformation and our high schools should be preparing our students for a world in that reality ” Though he was not a Catholic when he was in high school, he says that “studying the religion taught [him] lessons on morality that [he] was able to carry into adult life ” He notes that “both the
not one thing For forty years Chuck has been contributing to a myriad of charities and non profit organizations, such as the American Heart Association (his father died of a heart attack when
Chuck was a teen), The Girls and Boys Club of America, and Catholic Charities among others But his impetus for donating to Camden Catholic is rooted in his experiences in the halls and on the baseball field “When you ’ ve walked those halls,” he says, “ you develop attachments that you never forget and you come out loyal to the cause ” One attachment that remains important for Chuck is his friendship with his CCHS baseball coach, Joe Galliera In addition to garnering respect, he recalls enthusiastically, Galliera “made it fun ” Chuck also credits his parents with inspiring him, as he now inspires his own adult children to give back He recalls his father reading a parable every day from the church missalette “I still read them today,” says Chuck, “it keeps you counting your blessings ” Reflecting further on why Camden Catholic is one of those blessings that Chuck honors by annual donations, he says, “culture is hard to define But at Camden Catholic it’s baked into the walls. You feel it even today.” And then Chuck Grimley gives this advice: “You don’t realize it when it’s happening, but it stays with you It makes you appreciate where you came from ” That is what, he says, makes giving back not only “justified” but also “gratifying.”
positive and negative experiences [of his youth]” as well as religion were responsible for his becoming who he is today. Giving back, he says, is his way of recognizing the difference that [lessons from Camden Catholic] made in his life, and he wants to “ pay that forward to those around [him]” He concludes, “I pay taxes to fund local schools, why not pay a little towards my alma mater to ensure it is able to continue to make a difference.”
“Giving back is my way of recognizing the difference the lessons from CCHS made in my life and I want to pay that forward.”
When Angela Leone thinks back on her four years performing on the Camden Catholic stage before graduating in 2004, she remembers long nights of rehearsals, hours and hours spent “memorizing lines and lyrics, harmonies and dance steps, ” not to mention finding time to get done everything else a high schooler must accomplish Here she is eighteen years later doing it all again, not in spite of, but because of, those memories Again, she has long nights of rehearsals this time as the director and in between she must attend to the demands of adult life, including marriage and a full time job in client services and marketing for a commercial real estate brokerage in Philadelphia
To stage Les Miserables, her first CCHS musical as director in 2015, Angela turned down audition opportunities for herself because she had made the commitment to Camden Catholic. “The first year was very difficult physically, emotionally, and creatively,” she says She wrestled with the decision to return, if invited She was invited back and did return to direct Our Town and Pippin that year, and has continued to do so, with gusto, every year since, for numerous reasons She acknowledges
that the work has spurred her own growth: “I’ve learned how to drive a vision thoughtfully and collaboratively Each production comes with its own set of lessons that I store in my vault and use on the next show ”
The biggest motivator to return year after year, however, she says, is “the kids ” She remembers how important those high school days and nights in the rehearsal room were for her own growth as an artist, and now she “loves to play a part in [the students’] evolution To coach them through their failures, witness their breakthroughs, and celebrate their triumphs It’s inspiring! If they can put in that work, I certainly can too. ” This director certainly does Spring of 2022 marked her eighth year, and a banner year it was The hugely successful The Little Mermaid was followed by the phenomenal One Hundred Years of Camden Catholic Musical Theater, an incredible musical revue, with performances featuring both alumni and current students When she moved to New York City to attend AMDA (the American Musical and Dramatic Academy), Angela says that she used to brag about the caliber of Camden Catholic High School productions, how different they were from the plays of other schools “It is important to me that CCHS maintain that standard ” Angela Leone is undoubtedly doing her part to ensure that it does.
“Life is good!” says Dean Ragone who graduated from Camden Catholic in 1976 Perhaps there was a time in Dean’s life when he didn’t declaim those words so easily Early in the summer between his sophomore and junior years, Dean suffered an incomplete spinal cord injury in a swimming pool accident In the aftermath he was hospitalized for six months. “Camden Catholic arranged to tutor me while I was in the hospital and at home once I was discharged,” Dean explained in an email He credits his “ two amazing parents who sacrificed so much ” and an “unbelievable extended family” who helped with his rehabilitation.
He sees himself as “fortunate,” he says, that among the people who were there as he was rolling forward, “Camden Catholic saw to it that [he] would graduate on time ” From there Dean went on to Rutgers University and then into the investment world Though he was moving on to a busy life of marriage, family, and starting his own business, Camden Catholic would not be
forgotten: “I always knew that someday I would repay Camden Catholic for their dedication to me ” When Bob DiSantislao, an alum of the class of 1978, asked Dean in 2004 to be on the board of directors of their alma mater, Dean says, “Of course, I accepted ”
and not everyone can afford a Catholic school education ”
The Catholic education that Dean Ragone received at CCHS, including the unexpected turn it took halfway between freshman year and graduation day, seems to have left a legacy His children are successful lawyers, and Dean is retired, but maintains an interest in early stage biotechs and other investment opportunities For the second time in the same correspondence, he uses the word “fortunate” and couples it with “blessed” when referring to the recent birth of his first grandchild. Though he spends six months of the year in Naples, Florida, he is also in South Jersey for half the year, maintaining his connection to Camden Catholic with his work on the board and his longstanding, annual contribution toward tuition assistance Dean’s email signature slogan is “Still rolling forward after more than forty years, ” and he is helping the school that once helped him to keep rolling forward after one hundred years!
Dean shares that he and his wife Sharon have been involved with many philanthropic endeavors, so “when Camden Catholic came calling, I was in,” he says “We believe,” he continues, “in helping those individuals who face economic hardships,
A Villanova grad with a masters degree from Rowan University, a U S Navy vet who served in Afghanistan, a civil engineer with HNTB, a national transportation infrastructure firm, Luis Gaitan, CCHS class of ‘06, knows something about expectations and what it takes to live up to them This is what he had to say about why he donates to Camden Catholic’s tuition assistance program: “I appreciate the expectations at CCHS, and I donate, hoping that other students also achieve beyond their own expectations.”
For all he has seen and done since his high school graduation, Luis recalls that much of what
Camden Catholic gave him was a springboard for what followed in his life Lifelong friends, a passion for running (an ardor developed on the cross country team his senior year and on the soccer and lacrosse teams as an underclassman), and a drive to give back to his community, he says, he attributes, in part, to his time at Camden Catholic Setting personal goals and finding satisfaction in fulfilling expectations are virtues that Luis tries to instill in young people in several ways. One way he passes on that value is through his work with “I Run This City,” a running program he co founded in 2018 Under the umbrella of “Students Run Philly
Style,” the New Jersey branch seeks to transform the lives of Camden’s youth through mentorship and marathons.
Now married and working as a highway project engineer, Luis is back living in Camden where he grew up, and he says he “couldn’t be happier ” His monthly pledge to his alma mater is inspired by his hopes for the CCHS kids who come from his native city He says “the success for our youth shouldn’t be a rarity or a surprise. Camden Catholic makes success in our youth normal It shows what potential combined with a premier education can achieve ”
When he was overseas helping to solve another country ’ s problems, Luis Gaitan knew he would come home and turn his attention to making his hometown a better place Camden Catholic High School is thrilled to be a part of that on going effort.
“I appreciate the expectations at CCHS, and I donate, hoping that other students also achieve beyond their own expectations.”

Another alum who notes living up to expectations and abiding by his beliefs as his take away from CCHS is Charlie Reed, class of 1960. Founder in 1977 of Electric Power Systems International, Inc, Charlie retired two years ago, but not before turning the company into “the crown jewel of the industry” and expanding it with projects in Ecuador, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and elsewhere From the beginning the expectation for himself was “ to have controlled growth to maintain quality and safety while diversifying our services technically and geographically ” It is an accomplishment of which he is rightly proud.
Accomplishment for Charlie Reed, though, goes beyond his hugely successful family business. Sharing the fruits of that success is equally important to him For years he has been making monetary contributions to Camden Catholic because, as he says, “A fundamental tenet of our faith is to utilize our resources to offer assistance where needed When you attend a Catholic high school like Camden Catholic, you are taught and expected to live up to these principles ”
Charlie and his wife MaryAnn, also a 1960 grad (the couple will celebrate their 56th wedding
anniversary this year!), have made their principles manifest in their annual support of not only their alma mater but also the Catholic schools of their children and grandchildren In addition, they assist some individual students, who, says Charlie,
“recognize the importance of education and their dreams ” If education is an important step on the path to achieving one ’ s dreams, then the Reed family is helping to put many students in Catholic school communities on that path
Joe Murtin, class of 1979, says that when he first stepped foot in the building on Cuthbert Road in September of 1975, he knew the place “had a unique spirit ” He caught that spirit as well as fellow freshman and future wife, Debbie Carr Together they have been spreading Irish pride around ever since
Joe, assisted by his brother Robert ‘80, has been the JV boys’ basketball coach for 38 seasons He says the most rewarding part of coaching at CCHS is “having the opportunity to watch the student athlete compete ” Joe unabashedly shares that he had tears in his eyes watching his players celebrate their win of the 2001 State Championship “Had we not worked so hard to get to that point, those young men would’ve never had that experience and they would never have those memories!” he says with pride and enthusiasm that doesn’t wane with the end of hoops season Joe’s love of Camden Catholic extends into football season where he collects tickets, works concessions, and cheers at every home game When he’s not on Dulczak Field (formerly Shamrock Field, renamed for former Irish player John Dulczak, class of 1997, who donated the funds for new turf surface and a new scoreboard), he’s close at hand, year after year, coaching Girls’ Cross Country
Why does Joe Murtin give so much time, energy, and expertise to Camden Catholic? He believes that “doing something every day helps to make you more productive ” As to why he brings his efforts to his alma mater, he says it is “because of the genuine interest the school provided me as a student and athlete during my high school years ”
Joe’s daughters, Chelsea ‘08 and Rachel ‘11, followed their parents and a number of aunts and uncles to CCHS because, Joe attests, “the school provides sound work ethics, a strong
faculty, and a family atmosphere that only those who have walked the halls know what I am talking about.”
Trying to give a sense of why he stays so passionately connected, Joe says he was “blessed with great coaches such as Jim Crawford for basketball and Dave Nicastro for track ” He credits his parents with setting a strong foundation for him to be the best he could be, but also recognized the influences of CCHS mentors Monsignor Bob McDermott and Monsignor Andy Martin
His many, many hours supporting the Camden Catholic community in myriad ways are clearly joyful ones for Joe As he sums it up: “Where else can you walk the same four hallways for four years surrounded by people of all ages and different backgrounds and have a sense of camaraderie and pride ”
It was love at first sound for Diane Messina Crowell who came to Camden Catholic in 1974 as a freshman, and except for a few interim breaks of time has never left. Years before her first official day, Diane remembers watching her older brother Paul, class of ‘66, performing in The Sound of Music and she already envisioned herself happily in these halls, yet for all the various activities she would eventually engage in, the stage was the one she passed up Being an usher for the plays, she says, was as close as she got In the years to follow, Diane would move in even closer to almost every other aspect of CCHS life, first as a student/athlete, graduating in 1978, then as a teacher (religion and phys ed), coach (field hockey, JV cheerleading, and track), National Honor Society moderator, Vice Principal of Student Affairs, and Dean of International Students Serving in so many capacities, she found much to love: “I love the long standing traditions of our school, including Spirit Week! I love the Alma Mater I love the
committed teachers and our dedicated sports teams. And, of course, the students, even no, especially the challenging ones. ” Diane says that her role as Dean of Students was one of the hardest but the most rewarding professional positions she has had, asserting that “in that position, an administrator can really help to shape a student.”
When Diane reflects further on her connection to Camden Catholic, she realizes that the bond was established even before she ever entered the building on Cuthbert Road In September of 1966 her father, who had been active in CCHS Father’s Club, suddenly passed away and her house in Cherry Hill was “filled with teachers, priests, and nuns from Camden Catholic who wanted to help in any way they could ” Diane was just six years old She continues with a poignant memory of a nun who, she says, “took me by the hand and down our steep steps to go for a walk. She was just trying to get me out of the house and keep me occupied ” She would come to learn later that that intuitive
and kind nun was Sister Edna, homeroom teacher of Diane’s sister Barbara, class of ‘69 Of course she didn’t know it then, but Sr Edna would later become Diane’s teacher and mentor
And there would be many more like Sister Edna Diane remembers the teacher and coach, Jymme Szurek; the two women would eventually become colleagues and then life long friends. “[Jymme] taught me so much about life and doing the right thing It was her generosity and kindness that propelled me forward to college and was an inspiration for me as a teacher and coach ” Recalling her time as a student at Camden Catholic, Diane says,: “I truly found a home here, getting involved in everything I could and making as many friends as I could This school gave me the confidence to try new things and to excel in some ”
Influences from the Camden Catholic community continued when Diane became Mrs Crowell, faculty member. Monsignor Martin, who became principal shortly after Diane was hired, made an impact, she says, simply because he loved Camden Catholic as much as she did Moreover, she says, “His concern for all the students, especially those who were struggling, was a huge influence on me. When I came back after having my children, he hired me as the disciplinarian, as our philosophy of discipline in education was so similar I definitely learned so much from him and his dedication to CCHS.”
Still on the faculty after more than 25 years, Diane continues to emanate love, instill confidence, and show the kind of concern that was shown to her over the years As she puts it, “I feel that every student should have a caring and loving teacher who is willing to challenge them and encourage them to grow. What better place [for me] to do that than at CCHS The school gave me so much It is my turn to give back ”
Jim and Agnes Madden are proud of the students that Camden Catholic sends out into the world. And not just of their own six children, three of whom graduated from the alma mater of their parents and grandparents Jim is a 1957 graduate of the “old” school and Agnes is class of 1963 from the “ new ” building Agnes and Jim have good reason to be proud of CCHS students because they have had such a hand in helping to develop the minds and souls of the many young people who have walked through the green and white halls Their contributions to the school are far reaching They were members of the alumni association in the 1980s, before that group became part of the Capital Campaign, of which they continue to be significant contributors of both time and money At different times, both have served on the Board of Trustees.
Mr and Mrs Madden have a history with Camden Catholic that harkens back to a time before their own, and they pay tribute to that history in ways that directly benefit the school community In honor of Agnes’s parents, Frank and Agnes Weatherby (Frank Weatherby was a Camden Catholic alum), Agnes and her siblings fund annual scholarships that are awarded to students coming to CCHS from St Rose of Lima grammar school in Haddon Heights Jim and his siblings purchased new doors for Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, and their donations continue to sustain the school’s chapel in the names of their parents, the Hon Thomas M Madden, class of 1926, and Rose DelDuca Madden, class of 1927
Beyond their financial donations and their contributions of time and expertise in the organizational aspects that keep the school not only running but also improving, the Maddens’ presence is felt in smaller but no less significant ways In the 1990s, when daughter Maura Madden
Daniels was a student, Jim and Agnes saw that some sprucing up was in order around the exterior of the building, and they rolled up their sleeves to help improve the grounds As recently as this spring, they were both out there pulling weeds and planting flowers Jim will often stop along Cuthbert to dispose of trash, if he sees it along the fences of the fields.
Inside the building Agnes is behind the effort that put new banners in the Tom Kenny gymnasium. Both can be found in that gym or somewhere out on the various fields of the Monsignor Martin Sports Complex supporting football, field hockey, lacrosse and other teams at almost every competition. In addition, they are in the audience of just about every show and performance It is obvious that they are in touch to this day with the school they love, even as they remain in contact with friends and classmates from their days as Camden Catholic students Jim gets together with a group from the class of ‘57 every month Agnes keeps in touch with many from her class and attends all the reunions Their conversations, though, are not all nostalgia, she says “We talk about the school and its latest innovations, as well as how the sports teams are doing
When asked why they continue to stay connected and give so much of themselves to Camden Catholic, Agnes says, “[Jim and I] are very much aware of the need for a faith based education, an education of the soul as well as the mind ” She points out that “Camden Catholic students are called to be good citizens and are made aware of social justice issues.” This expansive kind of influence is not the only thing Agnes supports She notes that “students are expected to contribute their very best selves to make the world a better place ” She and her husband understand Camden Catholic’s unique role in forming students who can change the world “Students today are faced with many complex issues and their CCHS education prepares them for facing these issues head on We have always felt that Camden Catholic has a proud tradition and we, in turn, have a deep faith in its mission ”
After her reflection on a bit of the school’s past and her hopes for its future, Agnes Madden comments on the here and now: “Camden Catholic has a vibe, a spirit that is visible on the faces of students, faculty and the administration ” It is clear that the Maddens will be keeping that vibe alive and well for the generations to come
The love, admiration and respect I have had and will always have for this man cannot be measured or adequately expressed in words! Joe G taught me to not only play my instrument, he taught me how to be a leader, he taught me about responsibility and integrity He treated me like an adult not a kid he held me accountable but showed tremendous empathy and compassion He helped me find my voice and he provided a safe place for me and others to grow
Our lives were better because he was a part of it I can't think of a person that shaped my “ young adulthood” more than Mr G
I worked with Joe G from the early days of the dance team and on many shows and events after that time. He was a friend and mentor who gave me opportunities to grow, learn, and share
To say that G will be missed is a serious understatement For so many of us, he made our experience at CCHS what it was I never picked up an instrument during my time at CCHS, but was heavily involved in the performing arts department That never mattered, though I was still in the band room every single day, hanging out in G’s office with the gang, and sharing stories about life and our love of music and the arts G was Camden Catholic for so many of us My friends and I were close with G during our time at CCHS, and we will be forever grateful for all that he did for all of us within the department We are who we are today, in part, because of him.
Joe G is the man who got me started as a choreographer! He had such faith in me that I didn’t have in myself My heart breaks at such a huge loss to the CCHS Arts community
Mr G had a great sense of humor and had a way of pulling everyone together to get things accomplished.
Mr Gianfortune was certainly one of the good ones I hope he knew the huge impact he made in the lives of his students
Every now and then someone will come and make such an influential impact in our lives and "G" was exactly that for me He was funny, kind, and loving He pushed me to always do better and I became a better musician because of him Freshman year he used to drive me home from band practice and football games because my family didn't have a car That just shows how much he cared for his students
Joe was one of a kind…Heaven now has a wonderful Music Director for their choir
I am lucky to have known and learned from such an amazing man He had incredible faith in his students, and created the most loving, safe, comfortable culture in the band room. You could never have a bad day once you saw G My greatest high school memories were from football games, rehearsals, the pit, and lunch in the band room All because of him and the program he created at CCHS.
He taught me so very much! I went into music and music education because of “G” I believed I could do great things I still play that same flute I played in high school and I’m 52 years old I’ll never stop playing music. I play percussion, keyboard, and sing now because of “G”
“Mr G” was a man who knew the real meaning of a loving teacher
I have such fond memories of Mr G from my days on the dance team hanging out with the band in the bleachers He was always smiling and cracking jokes I used to go back to see him at the football games long after graduation
For us band geeks, he was more than just a teacher He was our leader, our General MacArthur, our Obi wan We would’ve played thru hell for that man He made us better musicians and better people There will never be another like him
I grew up with Mr G or just “G” as my dad would call him and literally cannot remember a time without him in my life I feel privileged that I got to witness his impact on students I would get chills every time his conducting would start as the lights would dim before each CCHS show What a legacy
Mr G was the most dedicated man I ever had the privilege to encounter in Catholic education
On April 30, 2022 Camden Catholic celebrated their centennial anniversary of musical theater productions It was a celebration of EPIC proportions as described by the night’s emcee, celebration co chair and Hall of Fame member, Brian Fitzpatrick ‘87 The idea for such a celebration was hatched by Mary Whipkey in March 2021 when she approached Brian about the possibility The two worked diligently for months, eventually forming a committee of alumni and parents They began to research the history of high school musical theater across the country to determine whether CCHS was perhaps the first private (and/or Catholic), co ed theater program. According to their research, Camden Catholic was the only private co ed school to have achieved this impressive feat of 100 years of musical theater.
In addition to researching, the committee began tackling the logistics of what celebrating such an accomplishment might look like Leonard Talarico ‘82, a Los Vegas event planner, Silvana Barile P’17, ‘19 and Paula Lynch P’20 took the initiative to begin planning the gala style after party complete with two open bars, incredible hor d'oeuvres and a piano bar that played showtunes the entire evening Sean Higgins and MaryLou Higgins P’19, ‘24 spearheaded the organization of the silent auction.
Over the next year, alumni, parents and friends of CCHS formed committees to work on the silent auction, the 50/50 raffle, commemorative book, selling of ads, Sunday Mass and communion breakfast Kathy DiCamillo (retired faculty), David McDonald (retired faculty and Hall of Fame member) and Maryanne Merritt ‘60 researched CCHS’s 100 years worth of theater history and created a display case worthy of a museum Loretta Coyle Huslin ‘87 designed the commemorative book which featured the school’s rich performing arts history Brian Shannon ‘87 served as one of the many researchers, writers and editors of the book Many committee meetings were held over Zoom due to the COVID 19 pandemic but the Irish persisted in planning a celebration that will never be forgotten Alumna Angela Leone Carrozzino ‘04 tackled the challenge of finding a way to express what the performing arts at CCHS means to the community and its members Through research and collaboration, she wrote a show that centered around the process of producing a musical at CCHS She selected songs from iconic Broadway shows that live on in the hearts and minds of many alumni, including: My Fair
Lady, Crazy for You, 42nd Street, The King & I, Les Misérables, West Side Story, Man of La Mancha, The Sound of Music, and many more. Big dance numbers were choreographed by legendary CCHS choreographers: Teresa Andris ‘81, Courtney Daniels ‘95, Joanne Mullin McBride ‘84 and Robert Rodriguez, current CCHS choreographer
The talent featured both current students and alumni on and off the stage. These alumni and students banded together to rehearse and perfect a show in less than one month’s time, many returning to reprise roles from their high school years One of the highlights of the show was esteemed alumnus, Hall of Fame member and international opera star, Barbara Dever ‘69, who reprised her role of Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music from 1967.
Joe Gianfortune (retired faculty), Philip Gianfortune ‘00, Michael Kettelberger ‘12 and Patrick Gardner ‘15 returned to play in the pit under the baton of Gregory Gardner ‘11 Joe Coyle ‘91 served as technical designer and Rob Klimowski ‘04 assisted the sound and lighting crews of current students. Noemi Merenyi, current CCHS French teacher, curated and sewed costumes for the various production numbers
Throughout the brief rehearsal process, the cast bonded over their love of CCHS and theater. New friendships and bonds were forged amongst alumni and students decades apart in age Students were able to see the beautiful tradition that they were a part of as well as who paved the way for such tradition and who is continuing the tradition for future generations
After a year of planning, prepping, and a month’s worth of rehearsals, April 30th had arrived Special guests in attendance included: the Sisters of Mercy, TJ Escott ‘58 (Hall of Fame member, actor and talent agent), JoEla Flood ‘69 (Broadway performer), Jean Taesch Garnder ‘48 (oldest attending performing arts alumna) as well as many others As the hallways buzzed with anticipation for the evening ahead, the cast, pit and crew prepared for the first and last show together through a pre show circle tradition passed down from cast to cast If you ’ ve been a part of a show at CCHS, you know this tradition well!
Before the first downbeat, Msgr Andrew Martin led everyone in prayer and President Mary Whipkey welcomed people to this prestigious night. The two then unveiled a plaque dedicating the stage to Joseph Farina, alumnus and long time CCHS director, and Joseph Gianfortune, long time music director and producer of CCHS musicals These two men were a driving force in making the Performing Arts at Camden Catholic what it is today Hundreds of lives were touched by these educators. This honor and evening as a whole would take on a whole new meaning as this was Mr G’s last time playing in the pit before he suddenly passed away on May 16, 2022
The show began with the familiar violin melody of Fiddler on the Roof as Brian Fitzpatrick, who played Tevye in 1987, took center stage to emcee the evening’s performance What followed was a beautiful display of talent, love and passion for CCHS theater The show concluded with Barbara Dever’s ‘69 stunning rendition of “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” that left audiences in tears.
Immediately following the show, cast and audience members made their way down to the gymnasium to celebrate Castmates, friends, directing staff and alumni all marveled at the magnitude of the night and reminisced about their own time on the stage as they enjoyed elegant hor d'oeuvres and drinks The piano bar delighted guests as both alumni and current students showcased the best of Broadway! It was such fun that the party went past midnight
The fabulous weekend ended with people gathering around the Lord’s table for Sunday Mass and a Communion Breakfast organized by Mary and Joe Glass P’16, ‘20 Thanks were given for the privilege that is the performing arts at CCHS. Msgr. Martin reminded everyone how truly blessed they are to be a part of this tradition
This celebratory weekend would not have been possible without the efforts of ad and sponsor committee chairs, Molly Phillips ‘87 and Russ Johnson ‘89 and the many generous sponsors including: the class of 1958 with the generosity of TJ Escott, Brian ‘87 & Christy Fitzpatrick, Bayada Home Health Care, CCHS Class of 1987, Kulzer & DiPadova, RDS Automotive/Mr. Robert P. DiStanislao ‘79, Dominic Flamini ‘77/SoHa Arts, Fulton Bank of New Jersey, The Gillece Foundation, Holman Automotive Group, Inc , Mac’s Janitorial Services, the Mullin Family, The University of Scranton,
and Michael & Annemarie Byrnes P‘99, ‘01 and ‘04. The money raised from the weekend’s sponsorships will support capital improvements within the arts departments at CCHS including: a piano lab, new sound system, music room improvements, art room renovations as well as various other auditorium equipment upgrades
Throughout the following days, social media was abuzz with the excitement of the celeration. So many people shared their CCHS performing arts memories: how

people like Joe Farina and Joe Gianfortune changed the course of their lives, what stepping back on the stage meant to them and how this was a night that would have its own special place in Irish history.
These memories and moments hold an even more sacred place in the hearts of alumni for it was the last time many were able see the beloved Mr G The sudden news of his passing rocked countless people to their core As the community banded together during this difficult loss, those who attended the celebration expressed how grateful they were to witness the stage dedication in his honor and for the opportunity to say goodbye one last time
The weekend was truly a celebration of centennial proportions that would not have been possible without Mary Whipkey, administration, teachers, volunteers, sponsors, alumni and the students It is because of God’s grace and the generosity, love and kindness of the CCHS community that the theater program has continued despite war, fire and a pandemic. As they say in show business, “the show must go on ” and so must the Performing Arts at CCHS Here’s to another 100 years of CCHS musical theater!

Siafa Lewis, Camden Catholic class of ‘96, is a busy man. However, he was not too busy to take time out from his very first week of anchoring the CBS3 newscast in Philadelphia to return to his alma mater to engender some excitement about the field of communications by sharing his story.
His journey from CCHS to CBS did not follow a straight line And it seems ironic that it was fail ure that set him on the road to success As he tells it, not making it onto the Irish baseball team his freshman year reshaped his ideas about a career path It was the mid 1990s and Siafa was a zealot for sports and an admirer of that decade’s dual sports star Bo Jackson, a Heisman trophy winner and an All Star in both baseball and football That was what Siafa, who played Irish football and ran track, wanted for himself at the time, or so he thought Being cut from freshman baseball did not diminish his love for sports, but made him think about how he could redirect his goals and still abide by his love for the game. “I knew I wanted to be a sportscaster from freshman year, ” he says, adding that he listened to sports talk radio “all the time ” It seems he had a plan from a young age. And by dint of effort, perseverance, and inge nuity he made that plan a reality
Two weeks before receiving his bachelor’s degree in communications, with a focus on radio, televi sion, and film, from Rowan University, Siafa signed a six figure contract to host a Nickelodeon game show The thrill was short lived As is often the case, the show’s pilot was not picked up For six subsequent years, he did everything from act ing and modeling in New York City, to working as an account executive for luxury Italian menswear, to waiting tables at Houlihan’s and Hardshell Cafe Undaunted, he persevered and in 2004 won a contest called “The Best Summer Gig Ever” that awarded him the chance to do live on air traffic reports on the weekends for NBC10 That job led to an internship at the station, where he used his experience to build an impressive resume reel It all paid off when in 2006 he landed his first full time TV position as sports reporter at Sportsnet NY
When his two year contract with Sportsnet NY ended, Siafa says he was “figuring a way to stay in the industry.” He did free lance reporting for MLB com Then he worked in the field of lifestyle
TV for the emmy award winning LXTV for severa years Next would be a mov to Chicago to anchor an report on sports at WMAQ TV, an affiliate of NBC5. Soo he was the station’s lead spor anchor, something he alwa loved, but at the same time he says he “ got the news bug,” thus in 2020 he added news anchoring duties to his ever growing resume
Siafa’s news reporting and anchoring experience would move him toward another goal post His shift from sports reporting to news reporting would facilitate another kind of transfer This one was geographical As the pandemic struck in the spring of 2020, prompting so many to reassess, Siafa began to think about moving his family back to their South Jersey/Philly home territory As he says, “it just doesn’t happen; I had to pursue it ” Using all his talent and experience to this point, he wasn ’ t long in finding himself “finally making it back home!” as he exclaims with great affection and enthusiasm On November 15, 2021, he anchored his first newscast at CBS3 in Philadelphia And on November 16 he was here on campus to allow CCHS to share in his excite ment and pride
Turn on the television (or open the CBS app) and you will see Siafa Lewis Monday through Friday at 4 p m co anchoring CBS Eyewitness News with Natasha Brown, and he’s back reporting at 10 and 11 He evidently loves his work and keeps a tight schedule, so it’s not surprising that when asked how he feels about sharing his ideas and expertise
ith CCHS, s first res nse is “I sh I had re time ” contributes
when he can because he feels that “sharing neself and one ’ s experiences the good and the bad with others is vital to their growth and to [one’s] own. ” He expands that thought, saying, “Giving back helping others continues a cycle that you hopefully benefitted from and those you ’ re helping will one day continue ”
Siafa says this about being an inspiration to younger people: “My faith is my guide through life It undergirds all I do ” It is a belief that brings him to this next notion: “The children, quite lit erally, are our future There is no more important resource in a nation ”
Thinking about his return visit to Camden Catholic last fall, which inspired so many stu dents, he says that the moment “rekindled fond memories while instilling a sense of pride that [he] was a tiny part of what CCHS has become as all alums are. ”
The last part of Siafa’s statement speaks volumes for so many alums who give back so generously Their collective sense of pride in having been members of a school community that boasts long established traditions as well as an openness to new ideas is surely evident, but an even deeper sense of purpose is clear in the way their connec tions and contributions play a role in making the school what it is today
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
~Amen~

Dear Parents, Students, Alumni, and Friends of Camden Catholic High School,
It was such an honor to join the Camden Catholic community last year as Director of Academic Innovation. It has been fantastic to work with such a dedicated administration, faculty, and staff as we implemented innovation throughout our curriculum Camden Catholic has a rich tradition of academic and spiritual excellence, and I am excited to play a role in shaping its future
My role changed this summer when I was named Director of Institutional Advancement Although I will miss the classroom, I am eager to help Camden Catholic live out its mission to the best of my ability and I look forward to meeting with as many of our loyal supporters as possible to ensure Camden Catholic continues to innovate while empowering our students to continue to excel both inside and outside of the classroom
None of the outstanding accomplishments that we come to expect from the students at Camden Catholic High School would be possible without the generosity of our many benefactors across the nation and around the world. We are fortunate to have an extensive network of supporters: parents, staff, alumni, parents of alumni, and friends
Together, we will collaborate to help Camden Catholic reach even greater heights as our school enters its 135th year with our attention focused on an exciting future

As our world changes, so must CCHS grow its offerings to prepare our students to be global citizens and leaders. Among our newest additions to the curriculum are several courses which fulfill one of the most important aspects of our Strategic Plan, to provide an innovative academic program that allows all students to develop their God given talents.
Data science is one of the nation’s fastest growing occupations. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that jobs in data science will grow by about 28% through 2026 Students will understand exploratory data analysis and statistical concepts in depth, including sampling, probability, probability density, and cumulative distribution functions, hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, and regression, data modeling, and machine learning. They will be making and evaluating data based arguments.
Demand for cybersecurity professionals in the workforce is on the rise. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts cybersecurity jobs will grow 31% through 2029. Students will become familiar with the current cybersecurity landscape and provide the knowledge of relevant tools to assess and manage security protocols in information processing systems.
Biotechnology remains one of the fastest growing occupations, with a 27% growth rate predicted by 2028. This course will introduce students to the study of genetics by providing an overview of cell division and the formation of gametes, basic Mendelian Genetics, extensions of Mendelian ratios, genetic variation, and recombinant gene technology. Problem solving and Laboratory investigations will be an integral part of this course.
This year students had the opportunity to apply for CCHS internships in the areas of marketing and communications, athletics, athletic training, Campus Ministry and advancement Over 20 students participated in the program following an application and interview process They earned class credit and were able to gain experience in careers they are interested in.
Fatima Toure ’23 said about her experience as a marketing intern: “This internship was an opportunity to expand my knowledge and skills. I was challenged to take on responsibilities, work as a team with my fellow interns, and step out of my comfort zone to try new things. It was also really fulfilling to do all of this in service to the Camden Catholic community to help publicize the school.”
In addition, CCHS added a Freshman course requirement of Design Thinking which will provide a solid foundation on the principles of the design wheel and innovative design. In order to prepare students for problem and project based learning, the goals of this course will be to teach public speaking and project presentation skills needed for success in high school and beyond.
Celebrating the many ways that CCHS has innovated since 1887, our Irish Giving Day theme of LET’S INNOVATE TOGETHER challenged our donors to help us innovate by funding new classrooms and continued evolution of our academic offerings
Rain didn’t stop the fun as our junior leprechauns Olivia Bent Cole ‘23 and Matt Marino ‘23 joined bagpiper Thom Moore to welcome students and parents at drop off with Tastykakes and entertainment Siblings and award winning Irish dancers from the Emerald Isle School of Irish Dance, Luke Sooy and Maria Sooy, helped kick off the fun at the annual Irish Giving Day assembly Also joining us was PHL17
reporter Alyssa Sullivan, who did a live broadcast from the halls of CCHS to cover Irish Giving Day and to give the bagpipes a try!
Alumni panelists Rachel Holland ‘96, Brian Fitzpatrick ‘87 and Molly Mullin Phillips ‘87 shared their “why” for giving back to CCHS, and offered advice to students on using their high school years as building blocks for successful futures The day was filled with fun as students wrote thank you notes to donors, the CCHS Baking Club sold Irish treats and our friendly leprechauns delivered sweet surprises (thanks to Marty Casserly) and savory Shamrock pretzels (thanks to A&A Pretzels) to each of our faculty members
The Shamrock Society is a premier annual giving club suppor ting The Fund for Camden Catholic. Annual suppor t of The Fund enables us to provide necessary improvements to our academic depar tments, ar ts groups, and athletic teams. It also provides funding to award scholarships and financial assistance to our students with demonstrated financial need. Approximately 30% of our students receive some form of financial assistance, which all comes from contributions to The Fund.
Make a gift or pledge of $1,000 or more to the Annual Fund during our fiscal year beginning July 1st and ending June 30th.
A pledge o f $84 a mo nth for 12 mon ths is a $1000 do natio n that ca n help a s tuden t afford a Camden Catholic e ducatio n.
• Invitation to select home games and special events
• Recognition in Shamrock Society listing within the Annual Repor t and at Hall of Fame event
• Quarterly state of the school letter from the President.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of spring musicals which took place in April 2022, our loyal alumnus and ardent supporter of The Arts at CCHS, Mr. Brian Fitzpatrick ‘85, blessed Camden Catholic with the gift of the Susan Black Fitzpatrick ‘85 Piano Lab. Completed this August, the Lab was also supported by a generous donation from Drs. Barbara and John ‘69 Kelly and Dr. Joseph and Mrs. Patricia (Kelly) Kuchler ‘66 in memory of Jeremiah “Jerry” ‘35 and Theresa McReady ‘39.
The Lab houses 16 piano keyboards plus an instructional hub and the Piano Class will kick off this September. Be sure to stop by the former choir room in the arts hallway to see the incredible transformation!
It is such a great honor to give back to the CCHS music and performing arts department in the memor y of my late wife Susan Black Fitzpatrick. She played the piano here from 1982 to 1985 under the direction of Joe Gianfortune and this piano lab represents the love she had for the piano, Mr G and the Music Department. CCHS is a ver y special place and it is my fervent wish that this piano lab further advance the students who utilize this great resource and that the program continues to flourish and grow to new heights of excellence. God Bless Mr Greg Gardner whose amazing idea this was to create this lab and God Bless Camden Catholic.
Mr. Brian Fitzpatrick ‘85
Jeremiah “Jerry” Kelly, Class of 1935, and Theresa McCready Kelly, Class of 1939, cherished their years at Camden Catholic High School, as did their children. The family, Drs. John, Class of 1969, and Barbara Kelly, Dr Joseph and Mrs. Patricia (Kelly) Kuchler, both Class of 1966, and Mr. Robert Kelly decided they wanted to make a donation to CCHS to commemorate their parents. When the opportunity to support the new piano lab was presented, it seemed like the perfect fit. Throughout his life Jerry used to love to sit down at the piano and reminisce about playing while at CCHS, and Theresa would proudly tell us what a talented pianist he had been. When we found a copy of his piano report card from May 1933 where Sr. Maria Corde at Mt St Joseph Conservatory in Chestnut Hill, PA gave him a B+ (before grade inflation), we felt convinced that this was a wonderful way to remember Jerry and Theresa.
Dr. Barbara Kelly

The greatest number of gifts to CCHS are unrestricted cash donations to the Annual Fund. Annual Fund gifts can also be restricted to tuition assistance, arts or athletics, including specific sports These gifts make strides toward helping us maintain a competitive value proposition for families seeking a Catholic education for their children.
The Shamrock Society is our giving club for donors who contribute $1,000 or more to the Annual Fund each year Members of this society send an outward message that they know Camden Catholic and its students are a worthy investment.
Approximately one third of our students receive some form of tuition assistance based on a standardized assessment of financial need. Your gifts help each of our families con tinue to choose Catholic education All recipients are chosen based upon academic per formance and demonstrated financial need
For years, the Sisters of Mercy were able to contribute their services to Camden Catholic High School to reduce the cost of tuition, thereby making a Catholic education afford able for families Today, the rising costs of healthcare and technology attribute to a higher cost of education, and tuition must be increased accordingly
What can I do?
• Contribute to tuition assistance and you will afford a student the opportunity to find themselves, uncover talents, grow academically and spiritually, and develop leader ship skills for a 21st century world.
• Named scholarships can both support a student and honor a living individual, fam ily, group, or memorialize a loved one
Stock Camden Catholic accepts gifts of securities, please contact the A d v a n c e m e n t O f f i c e f o r r e q u i r e d forms.
Matching Gifts Many corporations now support private secondary educa tion through matching gifts Check to see if your company offers a matching gift program, and multiply the impact you ’ re already making at Camden Catholic
In Memoriam You, or your family, can choose to recommend gifts to Camden Catholic in lieu of flowers within an obituary If you wish the gifts to be restricted to a specific purpose please contact the Advancement Office at the time of the obituary’s publication
