Cambridge newsroom update

Once again, it’s been all go, and with a short week snatching Tuesday out from under us it’s been even busier than usual. We’ve got a sneak peak at the new sculpture planned to commemorate the Armistice, as well as a feature on the Cambridge News’ owner, David Mackenzie. The journalistic equivalent of base-jumping, writing a feature about your boss would have to qualify as an adrenaline sport, but my key still works in the door so it must have been OK. Plus, we have sport coming out of our ears, including hydroplanes and polo.

And coming up next month is the annual Cancer Society Relay for Life, which will be held in Cambridge this year. I would struggle to name anyone I know who hasn’t been affected by cancer in some way or another, so I hope the town will get behind this event.

There’s also the annual die-off of ducks and fish down at Lake Te Ko Utu. It’s normal for this time of year, apparently, but still not ideal especially with kids and dogs frequenting the area. One of the big problems is people feeding the ducks bread, which not only is nutritionally bad for them, but it also messes up the waterways and encourages the growth of harmful bacteria. You can, apparently, feed them all sorts of other things that won’t wreak havoc on the ecosystem, including grapes cut in half if you have won the Lotto.

The ducks will appreciate it.

Keeping young people safe online The challenge of raising a child in the digital age is a regular topic of concern for many parents. The nature of children’s interactions online, and the platforms that they are using, change rapidly and regularly. To help support families in this area, the Cambridge Principals’ Association is bringing internet safety expert John Parsons to Cambridge later this month. John will be working with a number of schools, children and teachers across Cambridge and will also be hosting four parent information evenings during his visit. These information evenings are

designed to give parents the knowledge and confidence needed to keep children safe in a digital environment. John will share practical tips and examples from his many years of experience working with young people, their families and support agencies.

He promotes a values-based approach that supports other aspects positive parenting and will also point out many of the pitfalls children can experience online and offer solutions for when things go wrong.

Goodwood School principal David Graham said, “we have received overwhelmingly positive feedback about sessions that John has led in the past, parents have greatly appreciated his entertaining and informative way of delivering these important safety messages.”

The parent evenings will be held at Goodwood School on Monday February 19, Cambridge East School on Tuesday February 20, Cambridge Middle School on Wednesday February 21 and Leamington School on Thursday 22nd February. The sessions start at 7pm and there is no charge, although a gold coin donation would be appreciated. Parents are very welcome to attend any session that fits in with their busy schedules. The nature of some of the material John shares means that his sessions are not suitable for children under the age of 13.

Quickfire News Registrations for Relay for Life

The Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life is coming to Cambridge for the first time on Saturday March 10, and registrations are open for teams to join in the 12-hour carnivallike event to be held at the Cambridge Raceway. The event will raise money for the Cancer Society which will enable them to continue offering practical and emotional support for people living with cancer in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions. The Relay for Life is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, organisers said, and there is no minimum team size for the 12-hour event.

Resene Hunger for Colour fundraiser back For the third year, the Resene ColorShop in Cambridge is swapping their 60 – 80ml test pots for tins of food which are then donated to the Salvation Army food bank. If you prefer to bring in canned pet food, Resene will accept that and will donate it to the SPCA and local community animal shelters.

There’s a limit of 8 free 60ml – 80ml test pots per household.

Food cans must be at least 200gm/ml in size and with the manufacturer’s original full product label. The Hunger for Colour programme runs for the whole month of February, or while test pot stocks last. More than 110,000 cans of food have been swapped since the initiative began in 2015. * * * *

Stands coming for Boomerang Bags Plastic Bag Free Cambridge is launching three stands for their reusable bags on Saturday – one at New World, one at Fresh Choice and the other outside Wholly Cow on Victoria St. The stands will be stocked with reusable shopping bags available to the public. The bags are free, however there will be a tin for donations, but the main thing is that people keep using the bags instead of plastic bags. Despite being called Boomerang Bags, there is no expectation that they be returned, organisers said. They will be including a leaflet with 6 tips to help people remember their reusable bags. The group has a weekly sewing bee at the Community Centre on Taylor St from 1.30pm – 5pm for anyone who wants to help with making the bags.

Dead ducks and fish causing stink

Community concern is growing over dead ducks and fish accumulating in Lake Te Ko Utu over the weekends, when council contractors are off duty.

Cambridge resident Shannon Wilson said she took her kids for a walk around the lake on Saturday afternoon and they counted around 20 dead fish and 15 dead ducks lying in the sun.

“It (the lake) smells quite bad at the moment too.

Surely the council would know and should have someone checking it more regularly?

Surely that amount couldn’t of all died just today?” she asked. “We usually go once or twice a week, but we won’t be going for a while until I know it’s cleaned up. It’s not nice to see at all,” she added, “especially for little kids”.

Waipa district council’s community facilities manager, Bruce Airey, said that contractors have been clearing the bodies of ducks and fish from the

lake on weekday mornings and evenings, however this may be extended to include a weekend clean up.

Bruce said that despite public messaging he did not believe the deaths were due to botulism, because that disease would “wipe out the population”, rather than gradually picking them off, he said.

Nor does the council believe the deaths are due to algal bloom. “The water shows no sign of algal bloom,” he said, adding that “it’s a combination of heat and it’s just what happens…it’s not unusual,” he said.

Council has not tested either the ducks or the water, because the die-off happens every year. “We could test for it (botulism) but what could we do about it?” he asked, adding that the outcome of those tests could lead to the closure of parks across the region.

“There’s been no record of any human contamination caused by handling dead or dying animals, and I am reluctant to say the deaths are caused by botulism.”

While the public’s feeding of bread to the ducks was not killing them outright, Bruce said it “wouldn’t be helping” the situation. “It’s not good for their diet…feeding them bread will shorten their lifespan,” he said.

The council is considering erecting signs discouraging the practice, as it is not only bad for the ducks’ health, but it also causes overcrowding as the birds hang around the area waiting for food and other ducks join them. The ducks kill the grass and make a mess, Mr Airey pointed out, adding that feeding bread to the ducks

Armistice sculpture in the works A permanent commemoration of the liberation of the French town of Le Quesnoy in 1918, is to be placed at the entrance to the town, near St Andrew’s Church on Hamilton Rd. Standing over 5m metres tall, the stainless-steel sculpture has been designed by local artist Fred Graham.

‘The inspiration for the sculpture is the joy of liberation, the sacrifice of the New Zealand soldiers and designed

to further the relationship between two sister cities. Its concept was based on a well-known Parisian Tower, with the fern leaf up reaching up two sides,” said Armistice in Cambridge group chair, Paul Watkins.

The sculpture has been organised and fully funded by the Armistice in Cambridge group, who host the evergrowing military-themed event every November at the Might River Domain, Lake Karapiro.

“This sculpture will be the centre-piece for the recognition of the Kiwis, led by Cambridgeborn Second Lieutenant Averill, who scaled the walled town in northern France to liberate it from the Germans,” Paul said.

“We have big plans for 2018,” Paul added, “as it is the 100th anniversary of the assigning of the Armistice that ended World War One. Not only will the event at Karapiro be bigger and better than ever, but in town, our plans include an art exhibition, a sound and light show and other notable projects that will become known as the year progresses.”

Construction of the sculpture is currently underway, and it will be put in place and unveiled in November. Consent is still being worked through, so the exact location of the sculpture is under wraps for now, but it will stand on Hamilton Rd near St Andrew’s, the iconic white church on the corner.

While Waipa District Council and Cambridge Community Board are fully behind the sculpture, Paul said that all funds – around $100,000 for the sculpture and $40,000 for the other anniversary celebrations – have been raised by the Armistice in Cambridge group through Lotteries and other funding bodies, with no ratepayers’ money going toward it.

Festival singer planning pop-up opera concerts

By Viv Posselt Cambridge soprano Elaine Wogan has spent much of this week doing one of the things she loves best in life – singing.

Together with co-soprano Pamela Wallace, mezzo Sarah Court and tenor Andrew Grenon, she is taking part in one of 145 events set to enchant audiences at the 2018 Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival.

Accompanied by Francis Cowan, they will present ‘Opera at Twilight’ in the venue’s Medici Garden, starting at 7.30pm on both Wednesday and Friday, February 7 and 9. The setting is perfect for the Opera Brava repertoire the singers will cover, including well-known gems from Carmen, The Magic Flute, and the love duet from La Boheme.

Elaine is comfortably familiar with this festival; it is an event she has been part of for years, and one that has grown in popularity as the public’s appreciation of opera has spread.

“The festival is really great, and the Medici Garden is just perfect for the music … people bring along a picnic and sit and listen to it as twilight falls. It’s just magic.”

Training for the Hamilton Festival always coincides with Christmas and a long summer holiday filled with the other loves of her life - her three children.

But working her singing career around family has never presented any real problems, it seems.

singing since she was a girl. At 12, she started taking formal lessons and when she completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at Waikato University, majoring in music, it was with a view to making music her career.

The awards rolled in over the years.

She became Emerging Artist with the New Zealand Opera Company and worked regularly with Dame Malvina Major. Even after she married and had her three children, the work flow around music hardly faltered. In 2014, she retrained as a kindergarten teacher, mainly because she loves the age group and it works well around her singing commitments. Through it all, she continued to perform with various choirs, orchestras and ensembles at a raft of events both here and in Australia.

Those three other loves of her life – Lucia, Harry and Flynn – proudly accept music as part of their mum’s psyche.

Elaine performed the full Madame Butterfly opera when Lucia was just one year old, and did the red-blooded tale of passion and revenge, Cavalleria Rusticana, when heavily pregnant with Harry.

Opera in any form is Elaine’s preferred genre. She has twice performed ‘Barcelona’ with the Queen Tribute band, singing the iconic Monserrat Caballé sections. Away from opera, she gave an eye-wateringly beautiful performance at a Cambridge commemoration service of Requiem for a Soldier, better known as the theme from the televised Band of Brothers.

As for what’s up next, Elaine, Pamela

and Sarah are putting together a series of operas, aiming to present them in a ‘pop-up opera’ concert format. They did one in Raglan last October and were surprised at how well it went down.

“We’d really like to do it here … and perhaps take it around the region.

Putting together an hour and a half of opera is easy for us to do, and it makes it widely accessible.”

Meet Cambridge News’ owner, David Mackenzie

It’s been a year since David Mackenzie bought Cambridge News, joining the ranks of independent publishers responsible for 80 newspapers across the country. Notoriously media-shy for someone who owns a newspaper, he reluctantly sat down with Claire Castle to talk about his career in the media, his lifelong love of newspapers and kissing the corporate world goodbye.

David Mackenzie grew up in the newspaper business. His dad, John, was a printer at the Nelson Evening Mail, and he got David his first after-school job cleaning the newspaper’s fleet of cars and dropping off bundles of papers to delivery kids and dairies. He was 16, and it wasn’t too long before he started wagging school to work at the paper. “The boys in the press room would whistle out and I’d hide behind the presses when dad would walk past,” he laughed. David carried on working at the Mail, independently owned at the time, rising up through the ranks over the years. The paper was then sold off to a corporate media company, which transferred David around the country in management roles as he climbed the corporate ladder, taking the reins at the Waikato Times as general manager in 2002. The corporate strings were pulled again, and he was deployed to Auckland to manage a stable of two Sunday papers. That was a full-on role, but David felt that he had missed out on something by not doing any tertiary study or working overseas. With the support of wife Rebecca, who he married in 2005, he set about doing both of those things. After he completed his postgraduate diploma in business, the couple moved to London where David got a job with eBay as a country manager for shopping.com – a price comparison website. It exposed him to the world of digital commerce and had a fabulous coffee machine, but he was missing the newspaper business.

When David was tracked down in London and offered the chance to run the Bay of Plenty Times at the end of 2009, he and Rebecca called time on their OE and came home.

As usual, David’s role was quickly expanded, and he found himself

overseeing two daily papers and 10 community papers across the Bay of Plenty and Waikato regions.

In 2011, Rebecca and David were joined by son Daniel, with daughter Hannah coming along in 2014. And baby number three is on the way, due in July.

On the career front, the years had taken their toll on his enthusiasm for the corporate world, and David said he became disillusioned with their treatment of newspapers.

Meet the new heads of school

By Sophie Iremonger Many families around Cambridge adjusted back to school life over the last fortnight as students returned to the classroom for 2018. The two local high schools have reported the highest ever number of students on their rolls, with Cambridge High School at 1571 and St Peter’s at 1143.

It means a large number of students for the schools’ head boys, girls and their deputies to inspire and lead, or as St Peter’s deputy head girl Keruma Gibson puts it, “make sure that every single student feels important and that they

have a place here.”

We caught up with the new heads of school last week, and found that they’re rather excited to get started in their roles.

“Coming into school in Year 9, seeing the big kids up there, I thought that would be an awesome thing to do,” said Sam Scott, Cambridge High School’s new head boy. “It’s a nice way to give back to a school that’s done quite a lot for me.”

Sam has followed in the footsteps of his older brother Lachie, who was the school’s head boy last year. “It’s a bit of a hard case, I think Mum’s quite proud,” he laughed.

girl Nu’umoe Duffy, and their deputies, Amber Hope and Sam Hogan. “I think we’re going to have to come up with a nick name system for the two Sams but we haven’t quite figured that one out yet,” joked Scott.

The students boast a broad range of interests in both academic and extracurricular subjects, from rugby, netball and rowing through to water polo, classical guitar and even adventure racing. In fact St Peter’s head girl Georgie Edgecombe has just made it onto the New Zealand Secondary Schools netball squad for 2018, and hopes to go professional after finishing school.

In the meantime, her main goal is to influence all of her fellow students positively. “Especially the younger students, making sure they’re all comfortable and enjoying their time at St Peter’s as much as we have,” she said.

By Claire Castle It’s been 10 years since Cambridge musician Ben Merito crossed the ditch to pursue his music career in Australia, but the town still has a special place in his heart.

“No matter how long I live overseas, Cambridge will always be home for me,” he said.

him to perform at last year’s inaugural event but a tour of Western Australia meant Ben couldn’t make it. “It was a privilege to be approached again this year. It will also be a milestone moment for me as 2018 marks 10 years for me as a full-time career musician,” Ben said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to come back and perform in my home town,” he added. Ben went to Cambridge Middle School, and St Peter’s for his junior high school years, completing his schooling at Cambridge High School.

“I grew up playing music in Cambridge,” he said. From there Ben went on to complete a Bachelor of Teaching at Waikato University before he took the plunge and became a professional musician in 2008. And he has a solid musical pedigree, with his late father Gerry Merito one of the original members of the Howard Morison Quartet. Gerry, who died in 2009 at age 70, received a Benny Award from the Variety Artists Club of New Zealand in 1999, the highest honour available to a New Zealand variety entertainer.

Ben will perform at Chow and Tipple in between a performance at Mt Maunganui on Friday night and a charity show in Auckland on the Sunday, flying back to Perth on Monday for more performances. “I’m hoping to catch up with friends and family at the Chow and Tipple,” he said.

Locals win big at Regional Sports Awards The 2017 Waikato Regional Sports Awards were held last week, where Cambridge’s Luke Jacobson was presented with the Emerging Talent award, following a successful campaign as captain of the 2017 New Zealand U20 world-champion rugby team.

Luke was also a member of the winning Chiefs team competing at the inaugural 10's tournament in Brisbane, Australia, and in 2017 he signed a twoyear contract with the Chiefs Rugby Club.

St Peter’s graduate, won the Secondary School Sportswoman of the Year award after winning gold last year at the Junior World Track Championships with a world-record time in the women's individual pursuit, as well as winning silver as part of the team pursuit.

The Cambridge Twilight Cycling Festival picked up the Innovation in Sport and Recreation award, while Anthony Peden was announced as Performance Coach of the Year for his role as national sprint coach for the Men’s Sprint team, based at the Avantidrome.

The New Zealand vs England ladies’ polo test match proved to be a hot contest on Sunday as the Kiwi team, captained by Cambridge’s Missy Browne, gave their all against the Brits.

But unfortunately the Kiwi team, which included Suzie Hamilton, Renn Erceg, Maddy Rankin, couldn’t beat the visiting team, losing 6-1 in the final.

The English got off to a flying start, scoring two goals followed by one goal for the Kiwis in the first chukka. The NZ team managed to

keep their rivals at bay during the second chukka, but during the third the English managed to score a few more goals and eventually took the win.

“It wasn’t quite the way I would have liked it, but that’s what happens when you play the world’s best lady players!” Missy Browne said.

The ladies match wrapped up a weekend of polo at the Cambridge Polo Grounds, which saw the biggest crowd ever attend the Keyte Watson Tournament, with well over 500 spectators.

High speed thrills at Karapiro

By Sophie Iremonger Lake Karapiro was roaring with excitement over the weekend as 1800 horsepower Grand Prix hydroplanes competed against each other for the Masport Cup and AE Baker Cup, as part of the Hydro Thunder Grand Prix Series.

Eight V8 Supercharged Grand Prix (GP) hydroplanes competed across the two main championships, reaching speeds of up to 300kmph with their ‘rooster tails’ throwing water 300m into the air.

2016 winner of the Masport Cup, Jack Lupton of Waverly, piloting the PenriteRepco GP57, missed out on winning the 93rd Masport Cup after his cousin David Alexander took the win in the Steeler 777. He instead took second place, ahead of his third-placed brother Ken Lupton in Lucas Oils.

Son of world champion Warwick Lupton, Jack went on to win the 2018 AE Baker Australisian Hydroplane Championship, ahead of Alexander in second and Lupton’s good mate Chris Picard in third, piloting the Tiger.

The event also marked round two of the Hydro Thunder Grand Prix Series,

with the final round set to take place over the first weekend of March at Blue Lakes, Rotorua. David Alexander currently sits at the top of the series points table with 2675 points, ahead of Jack and Ken Lupton tied with 2300 points. Otorohanga racer Scott Coker sits in third at 1488 points, followed by Cambridge’s Kevin Ireland with 1264.

A hydroplane racing veteran of 25 years, Ireland was racing in a new vessel this year, The Gambler GP21. He finished up fourth in the Masport Cup, missing out on second place due to a minor engine issue. “It was good racing this year, probably the biggest crowd we’ve had here in a few years,” he said.

“Overall it was the best weekend,” said Denise Preece, the main event organiser.

“An excellent venue with great local support.”

The Cambridge BMX Club manned the gates during the event whilst the Cambridge Lions kept the crowds fed from their food truck. Old-school tractors also helped load the boats in and out of the water thanks to the Waikato Vintage Tractor and Machinery Club. Preece estimated the event attracted around 3000 spectators over the two days.

Leamington Annual Fishin Fishing rods coming ou There will be bragging rights up for grabs at this weekend’s annual Leamington Rugby Club Fishing Contest, which will be running from midday today (Friday February 9), with the weigh in happening from 2-4pm on Sunday February 4 at the Leamington Rugby Grounds on Carlyle St. The weigh-in cut off time is strictly enforced, so it is crucial for people to get their catch along on time, one of the organisers Roly Bolton said. With four categories – snapper, gurnard, kingfish and kahawai – the

fish can be caught anywhere (except the fish counter at the supermarket) and from the boat or the shore, as long as they make it back before 4pm.

There will also be spot-prizes on offer, as well as a prize for the heaviest snapper weighed in by a woman, the best photo of a released snapper and the biggest gurnard weighed in by a child under 12 years.

The Cambridge Central Bowling Club will be attempting to add yet another Guinness World Record (GWR) to their name next weekend, this time for the longest singles endurance lawn bowls marathon.

Club members Alistair Carter and Ryan McGowan will begin the 30-hour long game at 10am on Saturday, February 17, playing non-stop with just one ten-minute break every two hours.

“I don’t think there will be any sleeping!” said Ryan. “It’ll be just be come off, take your shoes off, give your feet a rest for ten minutes, and then back on.”

Members of the club and other support volunteers will be helping the men throughout the two-day ordeal, which is set to be the club’s third Guinness World Record, having secured two other bowls records in 2016. The first involved spending a

whopping 172 hours and 7 minutes playing non-stop lawn bowls, raising over $2440 for the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society, and the second involved spending 52 hours playing the longest game of continuous indoor bowls, raising $5350 for Cambridge Riding for the Disabled.

This year’s attempt will raise funds for the New Zealand Autism Society, selected because a couple

of the club members’ grandchildren have autism.

The pair encourage locals to come and check out the world record attempt while it’s happening at the Central Bowling Club on Alpha St, and to donate towards the cause. Donations can be made directly to the club’s bank account, 03 0303 001222803, with the reference: Autism.

Firing up the barbecue always gives me a buzz.

Summer dinners from the barbie are casual, fun, friendly and full of flavour. However, I recently attended a barbecue where I was very choosy about what I ate.

Why? Because the host left the raw meats sweating in the sun for 30 minutes before throwing them on the hot plate.

When ‘high risk’ foods — including meats, fish poultry, stocks, sauces, milk, cream and eggs — are

not handled and stored correctly, harmful bacteria can multiply every 20 minutes. Play it safe: keep cold foods very cold and hot foods very hot and always keep food chilled until ready to cook.

Chicken tends to be one food that can deteriorate quickly. Normally I precook chicken portions in the oven then finish them on the barbecue, especially if the pieces are large and contain bones. However, chicken tenderloins are a joy on the barbie because they only take about 5-8 minutes to cook through.

Healthy Hints: • Preheat the grill to very hot, for at least 5 minutes, to burn off any food residue.

• Reduce the heat before placing the food on the grill so the outside does not burn before the inside is cooked.

• Ensure frozen meat is completely thawed before cooking.

• Wash your hands before handling food to prevent cross contamination, especially after touching

Tamarind-glazed ribs Tamarind purée is available from most supermarkets and Asian food stores.

1 teaspoon each: ground cumin, coriander, chilli powder, sugar 1kg pork ribs Tamarind Glaze: 1 tablespoon canola oil 1 onion, finely diced 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 chilli, seeded and chopped 1 1/2 cups tomato juice 1/2 cup tamarind purée 1 tablespoon mustard seeds Combine the spices and sugar and rub into the pork ribs. Cover tightly in foil and refrigerate for a few hours.

To make the glaze, heat the oil in a saucepan and sauté the onion, garlic and chilli, until softened. Add the tomato juice and tamarind purée and simmer for about 10 minutes. Pass through a sieve. Add the mustard seeds and simmer for 2-3 minutes.

To cook the ribs, place in a large, heavy-based pan with about a 1/2 cup of water. Simmer or braise, covered, on low heat for about 1

raw meat.

• Barbecue foods until they are very hot on the inside (75-80 degrees Celsius) as well as on the outside.

• Keep raw and cooked foods separate.

• Provide clean plates on which to serve the cooked foods — not the plates that were holding the raw items.

• Always clean the barbecue after use.

Burgers with brie hour, until tender. Cool.

To serve the ribs, brush with the glaze and barbecue for about 5 minutes each side. Brush occasionally with the glaze during cooking. Serves 4.

Barbecued mini peppers with mozzarella An attractive vegetarian meal or an accompaniment.

350g vine-sweet mini peppers 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 small onion, diced pinch ground cayenne salt and pepper to taste 390g can chickpeas, rinsed and drained 1/4 cup finely chopped parsley 125g fresh mozzarella, drained and finely diced Cut the tops off the mini peppers, Scrape the seeds from inside the peppers.

Heat half the oil and sauté the onion, until softened. Add the seasonings and the chickpeas. Heat for a few seconds then roughly mash. Stir in the parsley and mozzarella.

Fill the mini peppers with the mixture and push the lids back on.

Spear 2 peppers per skewer threading from the cap ends through to the points.

Brush with the remaining oil. Barbecue on medium-high for about 10 minutes, turning often. Serves 4-6.

500g lean minced beef 1 egg, lightly beaten salt and pepper to taste 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh basil 100g brie Combine the mince with the egg and seasonings. Divide into 4 equal portions.

Cut the brie into 8 equal portions.

Form 1 portion of meat around 1 portion of brie. Refrigerate for several hours to set the mixture.

Grill, preferably on a hot plate, for about 4 minutes each side. Top with the remaining brie during the last 2 minutes of cooking. Great served on toasted burger buns garnished with fresh basil. Serves 4.

Friday February 2 At about 12:30pm two teenage males stole goods from the Stihl Shop at 42 Victoria St, Cambridge. Staff approached the males and several items were recovered. Staff let the males leave the premises and after reviewing CCTV footage realised the males had stolen more items. CCTV footage is available.

Friday February 2 – Tuesday February 6 An attempted burglary has occurred on Taylor St, Cambridge, between the above dates while the victim was on holiday. The house was left securely locked and alarmed with active security lights. When the home owner returned home two door locks have been damaged in an attempt to enter the premises. It doesn’t appear that entry to the house was gained, and nothing appears to be missing.

Saturday February 3 – Sunday February 4 A burglary occurred on Shakespeare St, Cambridge between 9.30am on Saturday and 4pm on Sunday. The house was left locked and secured. The offenders have jemmied the front door open and thoroughly searched the home.

Fran’s Café on Victoria Street was broken into overnight.

Offenders have gained access through a high kitchen window which was left partially open. They have stolen over $100 in cash/coins and taken some drinks from the fridge before unplugging it from the wall.

At around 10pm on Saturday night a handbag was stolen from a vehicle in The McDonald’s carpark.

Tuesday February 6 At 10am a victim has noticed two males attempting to steal his wheelchair on Maungatautari Rd. The victim had parked his electric wheelchair up whilst he was working in a digger. He observed two males trying to put to his wheelchair in their vehicle and approached them. The males have quickly left the scene in two vehicles; a maroon coloured Holden and a grey Nissan Primera.
