A lot can happen in 4 years

Residents in Cambridge East are up in arms after a Spark cell phone tower was erected on the corner of Robinson and Madison Streets last week.

The tower sits right in the middle of the densely populated Kings Garden suburb, and most residents say they weren’t made aware of plans for the new addition.

Those in the immediate area of the tower were notified of the project in November 2013, and after no formal submissions were received, council granted consent for the project in December of that year.

“Everybody was up in arms about it at the time,” said Sheila Shepherd, who lives next door to the site, adding that a cell phone tower was erected sometime

A spokesperson for Spark said they are not aware of the first cell tower being erected, but did issue an apology to the residents living near the new tower who were not made aware of the new project.

“We acknowledge that there may have been some changes where people have moved on, given the amount of time that lapsed between when the consent was granted and the start of the build,” said Spark New Zealand’s communications advisor, Chloe Ferrand. “We’d like to apologise to the residents around the mobile site, who were not aware of the proposed mobile site construction.”

Another week has shot past and ‘hello’ it’s December already.

I caved to pressure from the kids and we put our Christmas tree up this week. It’s pretty early, but then I read something online that said people who put their Christmas trees up earlier are generally happier so next year it’s going up in October. It’s been a busy week this week, with a council vote on cross lease water meter charging and a cell tower cropping up and causing consternation. I was shocked when Sophie found out that Spark had notified residents about the tower four years ago, because I don’t know about you, but I struggle to remember where I parked my car in the supermarket carpark let alone remembering a letter from four years ago. They have apologised, but I hope that after this they will look at their processes. In other news, the Christmas decorations have gone up down the main street and it’s all starting to ramp up for the big day, and we have some dessert ideas from the lovely Jan Bilton which should give you some inspiration (I’m going to give the rolled chocolate pav a crack). And by the way, do not believe what you read on the Internet – you cannot make a pavlova in the microwave, you get a puddle.

Cedric Delevallee I’ve was scammed in France five years ago, someone stole my identity. They found my ID card and used it to open bank accounts, take out a loan, buy motorbikes and cars, credit cards, they ended up accumulating a debt of around $200,000. Thankfully I was able to prove in court that it wasn’t me. I was only just recently reimbursed some of the lawyer’s costs.

Jerry Odonnell I was scammed by a former cop in the States who appeared to be legit, he managed to scam me over $2000, my bank account was frozen for over 2 years, but in the end he was caught and prosecuted.

Split water costs for cross-leases

At a lively council meeting on Tuesday, councillors voted to split the cost of water to crosslease properties equally between households on the land. Four different options were considered at the meeting, following a $100,000 report released by council last week.

Councillors debated the issue and then heard from a vocal contingent of ratepayers in the public gallery, keen to let the council know how they would be disadvantaged by splitting costs equally with their neighbours.

An initial resolution at the meeting that crosslease properties would remain on a Uniform Annual Charge (UAC)

for 12 months to allow for more data to be collected on water usage was voted down 8-5.

Councillor Graeme Webber said he was not in favour of delaying the decision while more data was collected, citing the case of his mother who lives in a cross-lease unit.

“I think there’s enough data to show that a lot of people in units could save up to half (on the UAC they pay now),” Cr Webber said.

Council then voted 9-4 in favour of splitting the cost equally, pledging to look at the issue in 12 months to see if this method is a fair way of allocating the cost of water to around 1000 older cross lease properties, which make up 7 percent of properties connected to the Waipa town supply.

Leamington resident Kelvin Dunn said he was unhappy with the result, as the other household on his cross leased property uses “vastly” more water than he does. “I have just spent more than $7,000 upgrading my bathroom to include a water-efficient toilet and replaced the bath with a shower. I wish I hadn’t done that now,” he said.

Kelvin, who lives alone,

put his case to councillors at the meeting but was ultimately disappointed in the outcome.

“I appreciated the chance to have my say, but I don’t feel that I was listened to,” he said.

Councillors who voted against the second resolution were Mayor Jim Mylchreest, councillors Liz Stolwyk, Vern Wilson and Hazel Barnes.

Night-time detours on expressway

The NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists of night-time detours on the Cambridge section of the Waikato Expressway over the next week while maintenance and other work is carried out.

The 6pm to 6am closures got underway this week from Sunday 26 to Thursday 30 November, they will cease over Friday and Saturday night, then continue again from this Sunday 3rd through to Thursday 7 December.

NZ Transport Agency contractors will be working on bridge rails at the Cambridge Road, Peake Road, Swayne Road and Thornton Road overbridges. All traffic will be detoured off the expressway via the old state highway route through Cambridge. While the detours are in place contractors will add rumble strips (audio tactile markings) between Cambridge Road and Victoria Road, complete some road marking and other minor work. Speed limit rise to 110km

The Cambridge section of the Expressway is set to become a 110km/hour zone from mid-December. Following almost 11,500 submissions from the public and stakeholders, both the Cambridge section of the Waikato Expressway and the Tauranga Eastern Link Toll Road will become 110km/hour zones from December 11. NZTA said these are two of the safest roads in New Zealand, with safety features such as median-barriers, no crossing roads, no tight curves and two lanes in each direction, which significantly reduces the risk of serious collisions occurring. Large signs will be erected on the two stretches of road to ensure drivers know where the 110km zone starts and finishes. The Cambridge section will run between the Cambridge Southern and Tamahere interchanges.

A council spokesperson confirmed, “Council has been made aware of the concerns held by some residents and will be talking to Spark and ‘strongly advocating’ that Spark considers a different location for the tower.

“Under the new National Environmental Standards, cellphone towers are ‘permitted activities’ in residential areas.”

Sheila Shepherd, a retired nurse, said she believed the tower posed a serious health risk to those in the immediate area. “I’m seriously concerned about the health effects that it could have on local residents, especially to young brains, with so many children in the area.”

Boomerang Bags have landed Plastic Bag Free Cambridge will be at the Farmers’ Market on Saturday morning - weather dependant – running a stall with boomerang tote bags and produce bags. Shoppers can take the bag for a donation to cover costs, limited to one tote and one produce bag per family, to raise awareness and provide education around using less single use plastic.

The produce bags have

been flying out the door at Vege Fresh and the logical next step for the group was boomerang bags, which started in Australia in 2013. It has since spread across the world as people look for ways of cutting down on single-use plastic.

The group hopes to have a regular presence at the market with a stand in the New Year where people can borrow and return bags, or just reuse them. “We just want them to be used,” said Linda

Weijers from Plastic Bag Free Cambridge.

“We also hope to recruit more sewers and collect donations of clean secondhand fabric, and threads.

As well as fabric, strong net curtains, pillowcases, table cloths, jeans and t-shirts are also able to be upcycled and used,” she said.

Linda said the Lions had already donated material to the cause, and she hoped others would get behind the idea.

Another stuck truck An ETL truck fell victim to the usual story of a driver following the GPS onto the high-level bridge at lunchtime on Friday.

Fortunately, there was no damage to the bridge this time, however traffic had to be diverted while the driver reversed the truck back across the bridge.

ETL confirmed the driver was new to the area from the Hawke’s Bay and had followed his GPS onto to the bridge.

The situation was compounded by the fact that the 3m height restriction sign on the Cambridge side of the bridge had been struck by another truck the day before and flipped over the crossbeam, meaning the driver was able to drive onto the bridge unimpeded.

His truck flipped the sign back the other way, which a Fulton’s worker standing nearby said had saved him the job of getting up there to fix it. Traffic was backed up down Williamson St for about an hour as a result of the diversion.

Cruising with the man in red

By Steph Bell-Jenkins Local classic car enthusiast Gary Anstiss has been driving his sleek 1960 Chevrolet Nomad in the New World Cambridge Christmas parade for seven years running.

Back when he started, his children were at primary school and the cream and copper coloured American

beauty, originating from the Californian surf scene, was an absolute kid magnet.

“I used to have kids at Goodwood School that used to book me for the next year’s Christmas parade – they loved it,” he said.

These days, with his children a bit older, he has to actively recruit

passengers.

But he still gets a kick out of cruising the main drag and gunning his engine for the thousands of spectators who line Victoria St to soak up the festive atmosphere every year.

“It’s a good day.”

Gary first got “roped into” the parade in 2010, when the Cambridge Information Centre invited

the Stragglers Rod & Kustom Club along.

Every year he organises a classic car to carry the mayor and a vintage truck to tow Santa.

“I even tried unplugging the exhaust once and making heaps of noise to see if they’d put us off but nah, they keep ringing every year,” he joked, before admitting

the parade was good fun really.

“I suppose it’s a little bit of payback for Cambridge for letting us have the cruise nights in town.”

Cruise nights attract Stragglers members from all over the Waikato, who rumble into Victoria St to socialise on the first Wednesday of every month.

“We fill up the main street with hot rods and then go and eat at their restaurants.”

The parade is just one way the Stragglers give back. Last weekend club members raised thousands of dollars for children with special needs with their

charity car show at Lake Karapiro.

Gary has always loved cars and found his Chevy Nomad on TradeMe seven years ago. A “bit of a surf wagon”, it came with 20kg of sand in the back and “rust to match” so he’s been slowly doing it up.

He believes it’s the only one of its kind in New Zealand.

“I just love the shape really and it turns heads because it’s so different,” he said.

Like the 19 or so other drivers the Stragglers have rounded up for the parade, Gary will be decorating his car to rev up the Christmas cheer.

The New World Cambridge Christmas parade is set to kick off at 2pm sharp in Victoria St this Saturday.

“As the clock tower strikes two, no matter what, we go and that police car leads out the parade,” said Vicky Ewing, who coordinates the event for the Cambridge Information Centre.

Based on the number of floats entered, she expects it to be “Cambridge’s biggest parade”.

“It’s going to be a colourful spectacle with animals as well as people, walkers as well as floats, old and new tractors, schools, pre-schools, businesses and community groups,” she said.

The weather usually comes to the party, but in the event of a torrential downpour updates will be broadcast on The Breeze radio station and entrants will be advised by phone.

Road closures overseen by Waipa District Council will begin at noon.

Town Hall Christmas wonderland

By Viv Posselt This year’s Cambridge Christmas Festival more than lives up to its 2017 theme, “Deck the Halls”.

From December 1 to 16, it will fill almost every inch of the Cambridge Town Hall with the sights and sounds of Christmas, and in a special nod to the theme, display trees have been decorated with Christmas symbols.

There is a Kiwi/beach-themed tree, a music tree, a food-related tree, and one entitled “Cheap and Cheerful” bearing decorations made from inexpensive materials such as jute. The biggest tree is decorated in pristine white, and sits adjacent to a much smaller tree that magically “snows” and always enchants smaller visitors.

Almost 11 months of hard graft done by members of the Cambridge Christmas Festival Society has gone into making decorations and setting up the displays. Society member and hall co-ordinator Karin Stedall said most of the 40 or so members of the group have been working towards the event since February.

“It’s been going for decades. We

make new decorations every year to fit a different theme,” she said.

“Those from last year often go into the festival shop where they can be purchased.”

The festival gift shop will offer a host of items to buy, including some 1018 bottles of wide-ranging preserves made and donated by society members and festival supporters.

Among the regular features back again this year are the popular train display, nativity scene and kids’ lucky dips, and there will be the usual tearoom selling homemade festive-oriented goodies. This year’s raffle will see a large hamper, a fully-decorated Christmas tree and a quilted wall-hanging going to the winners drawn on the last day of the festival.

A couple of newer touches include a photo-booth where youngsters and their parents can ham it up in front of a camera wearing a raft of accessories, and the other is a questionnaire calling on people to provide feedback and constructive criticism that might help in the planning of future festivals.

One of the most popular features of the annual festival are performances by several local pre-school, primary school and adult choirs.

Alison Shanks’ exercise motivator

By Sophie Iremonger Legendary Kiwi cyclist and local resident Alison Shanks is helping to bring a new element of motivation to everyday exercise, launching Running and Cycling Heroes in New Zealand.

The web-based rewards platform uses a GPS device or app, synced to your phone or computer, to help you accumulate points which can earn you online shopping discounts or entry into prize draws.

The concept was first launched in Paris in 2014 and has since attracted over half a million users, now extending its reach to the UK and Australia.

Shanks first came across the idea on Twitter, shared by a UK track cyclist.

“When I first went on (Running and Cycling Heroes), a lot of the product offerings and prizes weren’t available here, so the whole experience wasn’t that great for a New Zealander,” she explained.

“So, I contacted them and

said how about we bring it to New Zealand and I’ll run it here, and that’s how it all began.”

The platform has now been live in NZ for six weeks and offers products from more than 500 local and international brand partners across sport, lifestyle and leisure – from Adidas apparel through to Have-A-Go sessions at the Avantidrome.

Users accumulate points through the kilometres that they run or cycle, and use them to enter prize

draws or get discounts on products. And before you get any ideas, the smart technology ensures that you really are running or cycling “so you can’t

strap it to your dog and let them do it for you!” Alison laughed.

The app is free for users to download and use, and already has over 8,000

Workplace family violence action

By Andrea Twaddle, employment law specialist On November 25, we acknowledged White Ribbon Day, the international day for the elimination of men’s violence against women.

Given the high levels of domestic violence in New Zealand, it is timely that we consider the Victims’

Protection Bill introduced into Parliament earlier this year by Green Party MP, Jan Logie, to help employees who are victims of domestic violence.

The Bill, and associated amendments to other legislation, is intended to empower victims of domestic violence by enabling up to 10 days of paid leave to

help organise housing, attend to their children’s needs, counselling, court commitments and consult with lawyers. Flexible working arrangements may also be arranged between the victim and employer.

It is possible that the Victims’ Protection Bill will become part of the significant employment

law reforms proposed by the new Government.

However, the provision of paid leave may be more difficult for smaller employers to manage.

Issues such as the limit of how many times in a given period an employee can claim domestic violence leave will also need close consideration.

Tamahere School pool revealed

By Sophie Iremonger After three years of hard work, Tamahere School officially opened their new swimming pool complex last week.

The whole school, along with sponsors, supporters, families and dignitaries lined the new complex on Friday last week for the grand opening, where Sir Peter Vela and wife Pam, the key sponsors of the project, cut the ribbon with help from their daughter Petrea and granddaughter

Valentina.

“This pool complex has now been fully paid for, and that is thanks to the final push from the Vela family, our naming sponsors,” school principal Waveney Parker said.

Parker said the old school pool, believed to be around 75 years old, had grown too small to efficiently serve the school’s growing population of 465 students.

“All children should be able to swim, so hopefully this will be able to carry us for

another 100 years.”

The total cost of the pool complex, which includes a large laned pool, a smaller pool and changing sheds, cost over $600,000 to build, not including the generous donations of construction materials and labour from the community.

Over $200k was raised from the sale of the school’s cookbook “Divine Eats”, an incredible sum according to Parker, as the school had originally estimated a profit of $36,000. “And there are still more copies

left to sell,” added Parker.

Project manager Camille Stranks, a parent and PTA member who was involved with the pool project from the beginning, highlighted during her speech the importance for children to learn to swim. “If this pool can help save one life, or create an Olympian, then it was well worth it.”

Charity car show draws crowds The annual Stragglers Rod and Kustom Charity Car Show is over for another year, the event raising money for kids with special needs and

entertaining thousands of visitors at Lake Karapiro in the process. They ran out of window stickers after 1300 cars, but organisers think between 1400 and 1500

cars took part in Sunday’s show. A member of the Stragglers’ committee, Gary Antstiss, said they have raised over $150,000 over the past 12 years for

children with special health needs.

Sunday’s show was the most successful to date, providing a welcome boost to the club’s coffers which will be distributed

to kids in need across the Waikato.

“One guy got a special off-road wheelchair and they all need their houses revamped so they can cater for these kids with

these issues.

“We just try to put the word out for everybody that’s got any children in need that aren’t funded by the government,” Gary said.

A vehicle failed to stop for police after a complaint was received from a member of the public about the vehicle’s driving. A pursuit took place and the driver was arrested in the Countdown carpark.

A vehicle collision occurred on Bryce St around 5pm where the driver failed to stop at a stop sign. There was minor damage to both vehicles and no injuries.

Tuesday November 21 A property on Pengover Ave was wilfully damaged overnight. Offender(s) have damaged a total of 10 double glazed windows on the house by deliberately scratching them with what is believed to be a metal tool. If anyone has any similar damage on their home windows recently please report this to the Police.

Wednesday November 22 Over the past couple of weeks Police noticed Cambridge street signs were missing from their posts. Police discovered some street signs in the possession of a 15-yearold. The signs were returned to the Waipa council and the teenager was dealt with by Police.

Friday November 24 – Monday November 27 A burglary occurred at Keyte Automotive on Queen St over the weekend. Offenders have gained access to the secure premises by cutting a hole in the fence and have then smashed the lock off a shed to get inside. It doesn’t appear anything was stolen but foreign items were left behind at the scene by the offenders. Police will examine these items for forensic evidence.

An unlocked black ‘Merida’ road bike with red and white writing, worth $1600.00, was stolen from outside the house.

Cambridge musician Dylan Clark is hoping that his music is going to feature on summer soundtracks around town, and he’s already off to a good start.

Dylan, 18, performing under the name Dyl, has attracted a loyal following on music streaming platform Spotify, and his music is also available on other digital platforms such as iTunes and Google Play, so fans can get their fix of the laid-back summer sound with a quintessential Kiwi feel.

Finishing school any minute now, Dylan is off to Wellington next year to study the music industry through Massey University. He is interested in learning how to put himself out there as an artist, and hopes that the 3-year Bachelor of Commercial Music will help him take his music to the masses.

Dylan gets paid 0.7c every time someone listens to one of his songs on Spotify and while he won’t be able to live the rockstar lifestyle on that anytime soon, it is still a great way to get his music heard around the world, he said.

A truck and trailer got stuck on the high-level bridge around lunchtime on Friday. The truck’s GPS system instructed the driver to go over the bridge and it wasn’t until the truck reached the round-about on the other side of the bridge that the driver realised they were stuck. Police arrived to assist, and direct traffic and the bridge was reopened after an hour.

St Peter’s Catholic future-proofing

St Peter’s Catholic School is approaching the end of 2017 with a series of festive school functions and news of building projects aimed at meeting longterm needs.

Their November 21 Grandparents’ Day was the first St Peter’s one for Grant Stuart, who took over as principal of the Cambridge school in May. Making it even more special for him was the arrival of his own grandmother, 90-year-old Colleen Stuart, who lives in Hamilton.

“It all went off really well,” he said.

“There was a bit of a liturgy and morning tea, then several performances from the

children. Those included the kapa haka group, the choir and the performing arts group, then the students did a big line dance. The visitors also went around the classrooms and saw some of the work done by their grandchildren.”

St Peter’s Catholic is adding a festive touch to its December line-up, with a St Peter’s X Factor planned as well as Carols in the Playground and the regular ‘out and about’ carolling for which the school is well known.

In the meantime, the first phase of a long-term building project set to see the redevelopment of all the school classrooms is underway.

“Building itself started in October.

The idea is to redevelop the existing classroom blocks to create learning spaces that are better adapted to today’s teaching,” said Grant.

“Like most other schools, this one was built for a teaching style that has changed little over the past 150 years.

But the world has changed dramatically in that time; technology has made enormous changes to both the way children learn and to the workplaces they need to prepare for.

“By remodelling our classrooms, we will be able to provide our students with what is called an Innovative Learning Environment (ILE), one that involves more group work and flexible learning.”

Grant said two junior classrooms were being opened into one large space, with a couple of break-out areas and a teacher’s resource room.

“The next wave of redevelopment will

happen in a couple of years – it might take us a decade to complete the lot.”

Another building project will soon start at the pool end of St Peter’s Catholic, with redevelopment planned to extend the size of the changing sheds and heat the pool.

“We did a lot of fundraising to pay for the redevelopment of the changing sheds, but we are seeking sponsorship to help us get the heating in place as soon as possible.”

Grant said any potential sponsors could contact him at the school.

Tramping in some landmark locations Submitted by the Cambridge Tramping Club Captain Cook sailed into Mercury Bay Whitianga on a mission to observe the Transit of Mercury in 1769. Cambridge trampers drove into Whitianga to go tramping last weekend.

Sadly, the weather was not cooperative, and no stars were visible. Changing plans on Saturday, we caught the ferry across the harbour landing at the stone wharf thought to be the oldest in Australasia.

Exploring the headland Pa site, designed and occupied prior to the arrival of muskets, we could see the rows of holes bored into the solid rock for the wooden palisades, then continuing through tall pohutukawa and kanuka walking over ancient middens to

another bay rich in early European history.

At a fellow tramper’s home we shared a convivial lunch before finding the Hidden Springs where a swim in the popular tepid pools was relaxing. Back at our leader’s Simpsons

Beach home we watched the weather deteriorate out in the bay and rafts of sea weed drifting towards the shore.

Next morning some hardy souls tramped up to the headland mast then along the ridge to the kiwi

Letter to the Editor A follow up re: Thornton Road ‘reconstruction’.

It is now 27th November and there appears no end in sight as to when this reconstruction (originally publicised to be completed 31st May) is to be completed. I may have missed it in a media release (if there was one) but today I experienced a ‘total shambles’! I was returning from St Kilda Road at 4.50pm and the Stop-Go operator allowed us to procced to The Oaks intersection where we were stopped to allow traffic from Cambridge town end to procced towards St Kilda end and they just kept coming. Meanwhile the section by Tiaki Way was being rolled and was one-way traffic. Somehow all the traffic each way became totally gridlocked in each direction. But wait there’s more!!!! The lane from Mclean St to The Oaks Drive was down to one lane due to two water trucks and a grader operating. The cars were unable to move in either direction. We were parked for some 15 minutes while the ‘shambles’ was unwound.

A & P Show best of bunch

Despite competing with Equitana Auckland last weekend, Cambridge’s 114th annual A&P Show attracted a strong showing, leaving organisers “rapt”.

“It went really well... we had some of the best entries that we’ve seen so far this season at any of the mid-northern shows,” said Cambridge A&P Society president and chief horse steward Anne Hjorth.

“We had 300 plus entries

in the equestrian section, over 25 exhibitors in the beef and dairy cattle sectors and over 50 children’s calf entries,” she said.

“On our equestrian side, we started at 8.30 in the morning in some sections and we were only just finishing up at 6.30 at night. It was a very long day for us but overall we were very happy.”

In a highlight this year, a special commemorative ribbon celebrating the 45th year of the Welsh pony

section was claimed by Lorien Juliana, bred by Karin Klages-Bowskill.

Long-serving A&P society member Marion Lusby, who turns 90 on December 3, remembers when the section started.

She competed in it in its early days and has run it for many years.

The local stalwart has also been a long-serving member of the Cambridge A&P Society committee and is a life member and patron of the show.

Cambridge’s Frank Ritchie, who trained the legendary Bonecrusher, judged the event with race commentator and bloodstock agent Bruce Sherwin and Masterton’s Roz Southey.

Paris Kingston-White, who is originally from Ohaupo and now lives in Hamilton, took out the contest riding Brentwood Dazzle.

Dojo open day this Saturday

This Saturday the Camkada Judo Club will be opening the doors to their newly-refurbished dojo on Maclean Street for members of the public to check out.

The Open Day of Judo, Aikido and Karate will be on from 11am to 1pm with demonstrations running throughout the day, as well as question and answer sessions, covering all three disciplines of judo, aikido and karate.

Demonstrations will be carried out on the dojo’s new sprung floor, installed to enhance training performance. A free sausage sizzle will also be running throughout the day.

Those interested in taking up classes, which start from 5 years old through to seniors, are encouraged to attend and find out more. Organisers hope that past members will attend to see how the club looks now.

Iconic Cambridge Stud sold Cambridge Stud, New Zealand’s most iconic stud, is about to change hands and, very importantly for the New Zealand thoroughbred industry, it will re-main proudly Kiwi-owned.

Sir Patrick Hogan confirmed on Wednesday that his and Justine, Lady Hogan’s historic thoroughbred nursery has been sold to Auckland couple Brendan and Jo Lindsay, ensuring that New Zealand’s internationally renowned stud farm stays in local hands.

Brendan Lindsay, who made headlines last year after selling his company Sistema for $660m, started his fortune here in Cambridge 35 years ago at his home on Hall Street.

He and wife Jo will assume control of Cambridge Stud in April 2018.

Softballers make regional teams

Cambridge has produced not one but three young softball players to make regional representative teams this season, hailing from the Tom Voyle Sports Club.

Alyssa Fenemor and brothers Tyrone and Jordan West were each selected for the Under 13, Under 17 and Under 15 teams respectively, with practices now underway for inter-regional tournaments coming up in December, January and February.

For 11-year-old Alyssa, it’s a new venture having only just started in the sport. In fact, she was playing her second

ever softball game, with the Tom Voyle Sports Club, when a scout for the rep team noticed her keen enthusiasm for the game and approached her about trialling.

For brothers Tyrone and Jordan West, this will be the seventh season playing softball, starting in Christchurch before moving to Cambridge four years ago.

16-year-old Tyrone said he was “pretty happy” with the result, having been in the U17 rep team last year and in the U15 team before that.

For Jordan, it’s an especially pleasing result. With his birthday just the day before the age cut-off date, he’s usually the

youngest in the team. “I initially wasn’t going to go for it,” said Jordan, “but the spot was open, and I thought whatever I’ll give it a go, and ended up making the team so I was really happy with it.”

The boys will travel to Wellington in January for the three-day U15 north island tournament, returning home for three days before heading off to Tyrone’s five-day national tournament in Palmerston North.

“It can be a bit intense,” said Tyrone, who will be playing two to three games per day.

“Because you’re cheering everyone on, within the first two days you’ve already lost your voice.”

The boys say the culture of the game is what makes them enjoy it so much. “The people that are involved, they’re not really stuck up, everyone’s real chill. It’s a good community really.”

Sevens coming to Cambridge

Cambridge’s Memorial Park on Taylor Street will play host to the annual Northern Regional Rugby Sevens tournament on Saturday 9th December.

The Waikato Rugby Union is organising the event, which will feature six provincial unions (men’s and women’s) from the upper North Island – Northland, North Harbour, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, and 2017 National Sevens champions Counties Manukau – competing for their seeding positions at the 2018 National Sevens in Rotorua.

The Waikato Men’s Sevens team, which this year features Leamington player Regan Erueti and Hautapu player Sheldon Tovio, will be looking for back to back Northern Regional titles after winning the 2016 tournament at the same venue, beating Northland in the final.

However they will face stiff competition from the current 2017 National Sevens’ champions Counties Manukau Men’s, who beat Waikato in the National Seven’s final earlier this year.

The Northern Regional Sevens tournament kicks off at 10.00am at Memorial Park, Cambridge, on Saturday 9 December. More information can be found at www. mooloo.co.nz.

Junior tennis stars Quickfire Sports Cambridge’s Liam Frederiks and Suwanna McPhee took out the Championship titles in their respective age groups at the 2017/18 Waikato Primary and Intermediate School Tennis Championships held recently at the Waikato Tennis Centre in Hamilton.

Liam, playing in the boys’ open event, was a convincing winner through all his early round matches, going on to win the final 7-6 (0), 6-1 against Lachie Beattie of Berkley Middle school.

Suwanna, seeded second in the Year 6 and under girls’ event, recorded strong wins in all her matches, including her

match against the top seed to claim the Y6 girls’ championship title. Meanwhile Cambridge’s Gabriella Dela Rue finished in third place in same event.

Emerson Frederik, brother to Liam, took fourth place in the boys Year 6 event and another Cambridge player, Annabel Chapman, playing in her first ever tournament, posted her first ever tournament win.

All five of these players are members of the Cambridge Racquets Club, where Liam and Suwanna are the current 2017 junior tennis champions.

Dynamic Doug Duo

Doug McWatters and Doug Minnie both won their categories at the recent Waikato Bay of Plenty Classic Cup powerlifting competition in Te Awamutu reacently.

Readers may recall the pair of Dougs were featured in the Cambridge News, training for the event.

All that hard work paid off, with Doug Minnie equalling his previous record for bench press in the over 70 years category. Doug McWatters competed in the under 93kg division, managing a 202kg squat. It was his 255kg deadlift that propelled Doug the younger up the leader board, seeing him take out top spot in his division.

Cambridge Antiques cricket

The Antiques travelled to Morrinsville looking to continue their winning run to the season and make it four from four. Cambridge batted first on a pitch that offered assistance to the bowlers and limped their way to 136/9 off 40 overs. Some good contributions with the bat from Neil Rogers (31 not out) and Sam Leander (24) meant that in the conditions the target would be competitive. Wayne from Morrinsville bowled well to finish with 3-27 off 6 overs. Morrinsville started poorly and were 4 for 10 at one stage. They never recovered and finished all out on 109. Some tight bowling from Scott Miller (2 for 3 off 6) and Neil Rogers (2 for 5 off 4) set up a great fielding performance.

Women’s Golf Report

We had our AGM and prizegiving last week, now players are busy attending Christmas tournaments, always a good way to stock up the pantry as the prize list goes down the field. This weekend, Zeta Syme, Julie Redgate and Liz Skiffington play at the Champion of Champions tournament at Taumarunui. They represent us because they were the prize winners in our Strokeplay competition.

From next week, members who continue to play 18 holes can put their nett scores towards the Summer Cup and Plate which will finish on February 11, 2018.

A humid day greeted 44 Vet golfers onto our course with its fast greens. A couple of novelty rules were introduced for the day to add to players enjoyment. On the 5th fairway, players had to choose one club to play from tee to the hole and on the next hole “Land’s End”, they had to use only one hand on the putter. This caused a few surprises. However the ‘money man’ of the day was Dick Thompson, who was the only player to score a two and took home the cash prize of $84. Well done Dick. Duncan MacGillivray was top of the club house leader board with a very good score of 44 stableford points, closely followed by Michael Brace on 43 points. Bill Brocklebank had 41 points and then Neil Gibb, Ken Mackenzie and Douglas Wardlaw all had 40 points. The leading Lady was Ann Thompson with 39 points, followed by Pauline McGlade, Carolyn Langhorn and Sharon Harris. Wally Jones was nearest to the 9th hole pin for 3 shots off the tee and David Ogilvy made no competition of the longest putt on the 18th green, by hitting a massive 24 footer across the slope.

It was a special treat for folks in Putaruru. Generally the Royal New Zealand Navy Band provides music for ceremonial, public relations, recruiting and entertainment purposes associated with the Royal New Zealand Navy, the New Zealand Defence Force and the New Zealand Government.

Putaruru rest home tops audit Putaruru’s Cardrona Rest Home has been named as one of the best-performing aged care facilities in the country, following an audit by the

Ministry of Health.

All aged care facilities are audited by the Ministry every one to four years, depending on how well they meet the

standards. For the first time in over 20 years Cardrona Rest Home will now only be audited only once every four years, based on their positive results.

It’s the highest length any rest home can achieve. Previously they were audited every three years.

Since gaining their hospital licence over seven years ago, the organisation has moved from strength to strength.

The group, which covers Tokoroa, Putaruru, Tirau and Arapuni, is 100 per cent run by volunteers and relies on donations from clientele and the local community to survive.

Putaruru Red Cross volunteer Dexter Morgan said the group were looking very smart in their new uniforms and they were very thankful to the council for enabling their much-needed improvements.

The group of 29 volunteers offers a range of services to the community, including Meals on Wheels and a shuttle service, delivering patients to Waikato Hospital and medical clinics in Hamilton, Thames, Rotorua and Tokoroa.

Morgan said the new Suzuki SUV will help make the service even better. Just in the last month the organisation has transported 41 clients over 5570 kilometres.

I’m chilling out for Christmas with desserts that can be prepared ahead and frozen — or at least refrigerated for a day.

Cheesecakes are great freezer-loving sweet endings — especially the unbaked kind.

They’re best thawed in the refrigerator 12 hours

before enjoying and decorated on the day. A 23-centimeter cheesecake can feed a gang of 10 to 12.

Pavlovas can also be frozen topped with sweetened whipped cream. They take about 1 hour to thaw in the fridge. Decorate just before

serving.

Instead of having warm Christmas pudding I’m going to cube one that I have left over from last year and is still in perfect condition, then fold it into softened vanilla ice cream and set in a mould. It’s lovely served with brandy or caramel

sauce.

Other delicious desserts that can be frozen or prepared ahead and refrigerated include: pumpkin pie, tiramisu, trifle, Christmas mincemeat flans and summer pudding.

Preheat the oven to 190°C. Roll out the pastry thinly and line a 35cm x 11cm oblong, loose-based flan pan. Press a sheet of lightly greased foil onto the sides and base of the pastry.

Bake blind for 12 minutes, remove the foil and continue cooking for a further 5 minutes. Cool.

This can be prepared up to 2 days ahead, covered and refrigerated.

Combine the mascarpone and custard and vanilla to make the filling.

Meanwhile, poach the cherries in the pinot noir and brown sugar for about 5 minutes. (Both the filling and the cherries can be prepared a day

ahead.) Drain and return the juice to the saucepan.

Simmer for 2 minutes. Add the gelatine, stirring until dissolved. Cool, until just beginning to set.

Spoon the filling into the tart. Arrange the cherries on top. Spoon a little of the thickened juice over the top to glaze the cherries. Chill, until required. Serves 6-8.

Cherry Tart 300g sweet short pastry Filling: 1 cup each: mascarpone, thick custard 1 teaspoon vanilla essence Topping: 2 cups pitted cherries 1 cup pinot noir or other red wine 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 tablespoon powdered gelatine

Rolled Chocolate Pavlova

Christmas Crepe Cake Crêpes or thin pancakes are stacked together with whipped cream and lemon curd. I used Marcels Gluten-free Pancakes from the supermarket.

1 1/2 cups cream 2 tablespoons icing sugar 3/4 cup lemon curd 12 crepes or thin pancakes 2 cups raspberries 1/2 cup shelled pistachio nuts, halved Whip the cream together with the icing sugar

until thick. Fold in the lemon curd.

Place one crêpe on a serving plate and spread with about 3 tablespoons of the whipped cream mixture. Place another crêpe on top and repeat until all the crêpes are in a stack. Leave the top cream-free. The stack may be covered and refrigerated for a day.

To serve, place on a flat plate. Top with the raspberries and pistachio nuts. Serve the cake cut into small wedges. Serves 8-10.

A twist on the traditional rolled pav recipe.

6 large egg whites pinch cream of tartar 1 1/2 cups caster sugar 1 tablespoon cornflour 4 tablespoons Dutch cocoa powder pinch salt 1 teaspoon each: vanilla essence, white vinegar Filling: 1 cup cream 2 tablespoon plain Greek yoghurt 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 50g dark chocolate, chopped icing sugar to dust Preheat the oven to 180°C. Spray a 40cm x 26cm slice pan with canola oil and line with baking paper.

Beat the egg whites and cream of tartar in a bowl, until firm peaks are formed. Slowly add the caster sugar — a spoon at a time — beating until thick, shiny and stiff peaks form. Sift the cornflour, cocoa

and salt together and fold in. Add the vanilla essence and vinegar. Spread in the prepared pan.

Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until the top is lightly crunchy. Do not overcook otherwise it is impossible to roll. Place the pan on a wire rack to cool completely.

Whip the cream, yoghurt and vanilla into soft peaks. Fold in the chocolate.

Place a sheet of waxed paper or similar on the bench and dust with the icing sugar. Flip the meringue onto the paper and carefully peel off the attached baking paper.

Spread the whipped cream mixture over the meringue, leaving a 2.5cm wide strip along a long edge. Using the paper, roll up the pav then roll onto a long serving plate. Chill. The pav can be frozen at this stage for up to 1 month.

Great served dusted with icing sugar and fresh berries. Serves 8.

Fun-filled Friday sports Supplied by Sport Waikato Friday November 24 was full of exciting sporting activities and events.

The day kicked off with the Rural Schools Interschool Athletics day which was held at the Cambridge Athletics & Harriers Club. There were 5 schools attending with Kaipaki being the lead school, Roto-oRangi, Te Miro, Karapiro, Horahora.

After school, the regular touch modules at St Peter’s School which host over 300 primary aged children each week kicked off.

The module includes an element of providing leadership and officiating opportunities for the older intermediate and secondary school-aged children. They volunteer to umpire games under the guidance and support of Sport Waikato

staff.

The fun activity opportunities do not stop when the touch module finishes, with other multiple sports taking place in the community. Cambridge Cricket Club run junior cricket on Victoria Square for the Year 1- 4 students and Year 5 and 6 cricket is at the Cambridge Middle School.

Venture a little further and you will find the exciting Miniball league for Years 3 – 6 at the Cambridge High School.

This Friday, December 1, will see the Cambridge town schools hold their interschool athletics event at the Cambridge Athletic and Harrier Club, followed by the regular codes and modules. This leads into the build-up of the much-anticipated Battle of the Schools cycling event held at the Avantidrome on Saturday December 2.

Colouring competition

By Aaron Ure, Cambridge Community Garden We are so elated at our community’s response to the Bees and Butterflies open day event we held at the Cambridge Community Garden on Sunday. It was the first of its kind and the range of people that came to spend time among the gardens was phenomenal. We met groups from our community that we did not know existed.

The theme was bees and butterflies and how they are important to the gardens and everyday life. So many of our younger folk, early primary, had

a good base of knowledge on board which is very encouraging as they are our future gardeners.

Crop Swap were there to support as well as Bunnings and Oderings.

The new BBQ area and Pergola were hits with young and old with a few comments around summer picnics flying about. This an exciting development for us and we are thrilled to hear families catching onto the idea.

The day would not have been possible without our small band of wonderful volunteers or the ongoing support of Waipa Council and a host of local businesses and charitable groups.

HUMAN TRACES

Directed by Tony (Kiwi Flyer) Simpson this is the first film that speaks to our own experience of Christmas. Disillusioned with the materialism of Christmas, Santa escapes as far from the North Pole as possible – to New Zealand! When his reindeerless sleigh crashes and sinks in the waters of an idyllic holiday beach, he is washed up and found by 8-year-old Sam and his 12-year-old sister Molly, and their newly separated parents.

The family discovers who Santa really is and must unite to rescue him from the local Coast Watch, who have set out to capture him, and then convince him to return to the North Pole in time for Christmas Eve. This film tested really well with children 5 – 10 years, as they thought it good fun, and they are who it’s truly aimed at. It represents very well a nostalgic Kiwi camping holiday, and is a truly good wholesome film for parents to take their kids to.
