CCAE offers in-person and online classes in many languages taught by highly trained and experienced instructors. We use the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) to assess students and establish learning goals (p. 19). Suzann Bedrosian | American Sign Language Instructor Learn the basics of sign language as a first step to developing receptive and expressive skills. PORTUGUESE FOR SPANISH SPEAKERS

CONVERSATION PRACTICE

For students who would like to improve their mandarin pronunciation and conversational skills, a new course of 9 weeks is offered for the fall of 2022. Each lesson will focus on one of the topics covered in Yong Ho’s Beginner’s Chinese textbook. Students will engage in conversations on the following topics: self-introduction, daily schedule and activities, restaurant dining, shopping, travel, and weather. Feng Shengli’s book, When to Say What, will also be used to facilitate students with frequently used phrases for various occasions, such as birthday parties and other invitations. Prerequisite: One year of prior Chinese study is recommended, preferably based on Yong Ho’s Beginner’s Chinese textbook.

HIGH BEGINNER/LOW INTERMEDIATE

This class assumes that students have taken Chinese classes continuously for approximately one year. It focuses on recognizing frequently used Chinese characters and writing simple Chinese sentences, along with conversations for everyday life. Students at this level will learn to handle a limited number of situations, such as talking about past and future events, commenting about learning Chinese or English, and making phone calls, and talking about locations. These topics correspond to Lessons 3-4 of the Intermediate Chinese textbook with an accompanying Audio CD by Yong Ho.

Plutôt que d’écrire une hagiographie, une légende, Julien Green nous montre, François, ce petit homme, simple et désarmant, qui renonce à tout, pour prêcher avec conviction et compassion, amour et joie. Join us to discuss Leonardo Sciascia’s Il giorno della civetta (1961), an unconventional mystery and a literary classic set in 1960s Sicily. JAPANESE

Tomoko Takagi | Native Speaker Japanese is spoken by more than 125 million people around the world—primarily by the inhabitants of Japan, but also by populations of Japanese origin in Hawaii, as well as in North and South America. Nearly 4 million people around the world study Japanese. Japanese is an agglutinative language whose origins are not clearly established. The writing system consists of two syllabaries—Hiragana and Katakana—and the Chinese Kanji characters.

JAPANESE HOLIDAY TRADITIONS THROUGH MOVIES AND CRAFTS

The holiday season, especially from New Year’s Eve (Omisoka) to New Year (Oshogatsu), is the most important period of the year for Japanese people and is rich in tradition. In this class, we will look through these unique customs and get in the holiday mood through watching Japanese movies, reading a little drama together and learning the art of Japanese Fabric Wrapping using traditional Furoshiki cloth, and some basic Furoshiki wrapping techniques for your holiday gifts! Jungah Lee | Native Speaker Korean belongs to the Ural-Altaic family of languages and is spoken by approximately 100 million people in South Korea, North Korea, China, Japan, and the US. Students of our beginner level classes will have become well-acquainted with the poet Martial—now it’s time to meet some other Roman poets and writers! This first level of our Intermediate classes will continue focusing on acquiring the most commonly used grammar in Latin literature while working on our reading skills by dipping into selections from Caesar, Catullus, and others. MODERN HEBREW

Dalia Mendel | Native Speaker The official language of the state of Israel, Hebrew, is a Semitic language which belongs to the Afro-Asian language family. Hebrew is the only Canaanite language still spoken, and the only truly successful example of a revived dead language. Modern Hebrew is spoken by approximately 10 million people around the world.

RUSSIAN

Katya Maher | Native Speaker Russian is the largest native language in Europe, with 144 million native speakers in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, and is also widely spoken in Central Asia. Russian is the eighth most spoken language in the world by number of native speakers and the seventh by total numbers of speakers. Our experienced instructor, Katya Maher, will make you familiar with how to read and write the Cyrillic alphabet and everything else you need to communicate in this language.

BEGINNER LEVEL 2

Beginner Level 2 is for students who have at least 30 hours of classroom time in Russian within the last year, can sound out Russian words written in Cyrillic script, can ask and answer simple questions in areas of immediate need in Russian, and can use simple phrases and sentences to describe where they live and the people they know. Students should have basic knowledge of all the cases of nouns, present, past and future tenses. Students at this level will continue to identify common words concerning their immediate concrete surroundings, read simple sentences, and practice their speaking skills with topics related to everyday life.

INTERMEDIATE CONVERSATION AND GRAMMAR

This conversation class is intended for people who already have a fairly large vocabulary and enough grammar to have a conversation in Russian. Such people usually are interested in keeping their Russian from getting rusty. Each lesson, we review some grammar features, but most of the time is spent in conversation. Also, for homework, in addition to some grammar exercises, the students get a text to read which we may discuss in class the following week.

POLISH

Edward Mitukiewicz | Native Speaker Polish is a West-Slavic language, the official language of Poland, and one of the official languages of the European Union. After numerous waves of emigration since the beginning of the nineteenth-century, around 10 million people speak Polish around the world in addition to the approximately 38 million speakers who reside in Poland. One of the largest Diaspora communities is located in the US where Polish is spoken by 3.5 million people. CON RADIO AMBULANTE: SPANISH LISTENING AND CONVERSATION

Luis Lopez | Native Speaker This class enables participants to engage in discussion with sociological themes like human rights, gender identity, immigration, just to name a few. The course is structured around NPR’s Radio Ambulante, a Spanish-language podcast that combines narrative and investigative journalism. Students will rely and build on their listening skills to sustain discussion on concrete and abstract topics. Don’t fear taking this class, though! The instructor will provide scaffolding designed to learn new vocabulary and acquire an intermediate degree of fluency and spontaneity for fluid interactions by scrutinizing language structures in excerpts of the episodes’ scripts. CONVERSATION: LAS COSAS QUE PERDIMOS EN EL FUEGO

Martha de la Vega | Native Speaker “Algo malo iba a pasar y era una estupidez negarlo.” En los cuentos de la escritora argentina Mariana Enriquez están presentes la inminencia de la catástrofe, el terror a la pobreza, el terror a los otros. De ella se ha dicho que ha reinventado la narrativa de terror, al menos en el marco de la literatura escrita en español. Enriquez combina elementos típicos de este género con otros terrores más próximos o reales anclados en problemas sociales, en lo perturbador de la vida cotidiana o en elementos de la historia argentina. En este curso leeremos un cuento por semana del libro Las cosas que perdimos en el fuego publicado en 2016. Estos textos serán la base para comentar, conversar e intercambiar opiniones. CONVERSACIÓNES ACERCA DE LAS TRADICIÓNES Y COSTUMBRES LATINOAMERICANAS

This class will have conversations about traditions and customs in Latin America focusing on but not limited to the Day of the Dead Ofrendas celebration. The tradition of setting up Ofrendas dedicated to the departed dates back to the Pre-Hispanic era. Students will explore the origin of this tradition, when it is celebrated, where it is celebrated, the reasons, and the differences among states and countries that celebrate this tradition. Students will also build an Altar for Ofrendas. This class is recommended for intermediate and advanced students (CEFR B1 and above).
