The PROSE Awards, which is currently enjoying its 50th Anniversary, celebrate publishers whose books, journals, and digital products make a significant contribution to their fields of study.

With more winners in 2026 than any other year, the strength and depth of Cambridge’s scholarly publishing has once again been recognised, with 23 titles honoured, including two Excellence winners, nine Subject Category winners and eleven Finalists.

Achievements from the 2026 PROSE Awards

R.R. Hawkins Award Winner and PROSE Award for Excellence in the Humanities

Atlantic Cataclysm

Rethinking the Atlantic Slave Trades

David Eltis, Emory University, Atlanta

The R.R. Hawkins Award was created in 1976 to recognize outstanding scholarly works in all disciplines of the arts and sciences. In his book, which was named as a Book of the Year by The Spectator in 2025, David Eltis offers a two-thousand-year perspective on the trafficking of people, and boldly intervenes in the expansive discussions about slavery in the last half-century.

Using new and underexplored data made available by slavevoyages.org, he offers compelling explanations of why the slave trades began and why they ended, and in the process debunks long-held assumptions.

Award for Excellence in Physical Science and Mathematics Decoherence and Quantum Darwinism

Decoherence and Quantum Darwinism

From Quantum Foundations to Classical Reality

Wojciech Hubert Zurek, Los Alamos National Laboratory

While the ‘Copenhagen’ and ‘Many Worlds’ interpretations have dominated discussion of this philosophically charged question, Zurek builds on the physics of decoherence and introduces the theory of ‘Quantum Darwinism’ to provide a novel account of the emergence of classical reality.

Flipping the traditional publishing model upside down

What is Flip it Open?

Flip it Open is a Cambridge University Press programme which aims to sustainably fund open access to over 100 book titles through existing purchasing habits. Once the titles meet a set revenue threshold, we have committed to making them available as open access on Cambridge Core, as well as affordable paperbacks. By making books open access in response to them being purchased early in their life, we are flipping the traditional publishing model upside down.

Explore recently flipped and about to flip titles

The Flip it Open pilot included 28 titles across HSS subjects and its success has led us to continue with the programme on an ongoing basis, with over 120 titles flipped. As we always make it clear to all that the purchased titles are part of the project, it is our customers’ buying habits and the simple process of flipping the titles that determine the success and sustainability of Flip it Open.

Explore our recently flipped titles, as well as forthcoming titles to the programme, on the next page.

Celebrating 40 years of Cambridge Companions

This year, we celebrate 40 years of Cambridge Companions – a series of authoritative guides, written by leading experts, offering lively, accessible introductions to major writers, artists, philosophers, topics, and periods.

The first two titles in the Companions series were the Cambridge Companion to Shakespeare and the Cambridge Companion to Chaucer, which were both published in 1986 and have since been updated with new editions.

Now, there are over 900 Companion titles, which include over 4,000 essays as well as bibliographies and further reading. Online, they are fully searchable by author, title, topic or theme. Explore the collection online, and view some highlight series on the next page.
