he Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was established by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme to provide an authoritative international statement of scientific understanding of climate change. The IPCC’s periodic assessments of the causes, impacts, and possible response strategies to climate change are the most comprehensive and up-to-date reports available on the subject and form the standard reference for all concerned with climate change in academia, government, and industry worldwide. Through three Working Groups, many hundreds of international experts assess climate change in this Fifth Assessment Report. The Report consists of three main volumes under the umbrella title Climate Change 2013/2014, all available from Cambridge University Press:
Climate Change 2014 – Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability is the part of the IPCC assessment focused on the question, why does climate change matter? The report considers: • Impacts of climate changes that have already occurred and risks of future impacts • Vulnerabilities and interactions that make some climate events devastating, while others pass with little notice • Risks of climate change impacts for the health and security of people and ecosystems across the regions of the Earth, including the oceans and the poles • Risks of climate change impacts for human activities, from agriculture and manufacturing to recreation • Relationships among risks of climate change impacts, the amount of climate change that occurs, and investments in adaptation to climate changes that cannot be avoided • Regional and sectoral key risks and vulnerabilities • Prospects for adaptation, including opportunities, barriers, and financing • Broad dimensions of a climate change “solution-space,” with an emphasis on cost-effective, iterative risk management that yields benefits for sustainable development as well as climate change adaptation.

This latest assessment of the IPCC will again form the standard scientific reference for all those concerned with the environmental and social consequences of climate change, including students and researchers across the natural and social sciences, scholars in the humanities, professionals in medicine and law, and practitioners in environmental planning, resource management, development, disaster risk reduction, and adaptation. It provides relevant material for decision makers and stakeholders at all levels of government, NGOs, and the private sector worldwide. From reviews of previous IPCC Assessment Reports: ‘ . . . a milestone for climate-change science and policy.’

[Endorsement quotes: to be inserted here] This textbook on atmospheric thermodynamics is for students majoring in meteorology or atmospheric science. It also serves as a reference text for working professionals in meteorology and weather forecasting.
11
The book is both mathematically and physically rigorous, while also showing how the principles derived from theory are applied to real world problems relevant to up-and-coming weather forecasters and other atmospheric scientists. The book develops theory from first principles, such as the gas laws of Gay Lussac, the Ideal Gas Law, and the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics. It then derives many quantities from these basic principles, such as specific

calculus-based. A unique feature of this particular textbook on atmospheric thermodynamics is that it presents many examples of applications in practical meteorology, weather analysis, and forecasting, using both numerical calculations using the derived equations, and graphical calculations using thermodynamic diagrams. Worked examples and practice problems are included throughout.

The Renaissance of Renewable Energy
One of the most important issues facing humanity today is the prospect of global climate change, brought about primarily by our heavy dependence on fossil fuels. Continuing to use the present mix of fuels as the world economy and population grow will lead to very serious consequences. Changing course requires that we switch to more renewable and sustainable sources of energy. This book provides detailed yet easily understandable information about sustainable energy alternatives in the context of growing public concern about climate change, the impending fuel crisis and environmental degradation. It deals with the history of energy use and the factors that have led to the current interest in energy alternatives and assesses the chances of renewable energy replacing fossil fuels in the future. The authors manage to make a highly complex and often intimidating subject not only accessible but also engaging and entertaining. This book unpacks but never simplifies the science of energy, leavening the more technical passages with anecdotes, metaphors, examples and imagery. By also dealing with the history, politics and economics of energy use, it offers both scientific and non-scientific readers a deeper understanding of one of

Global Warming The Complete Briefing Fifth edition John T. Houghton Former Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
John T. Houghton’s definitive, full-colour, guide to climate change is brought fully up-to-date with the latest IPCC findings for students across a wide range of disciplines. The simple, logical flow of ideas gives an invaluable grounding in the science, physical and human impacts, and need for action on global warming. Review of previous edition: ‘It is difficult to imagine how Houghton’s exposition of this complex body of information might be substantially improved upon … Seldom has such a complex topic been presented with such remarkable simplicity, directness and crystalline clarity … Houghton’s complete briefing is without doubt the best briefing the concerned citizen could hope to find within the pages of a pocketable book.’ John Perry, Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society

Principles of Planetary Climate Raymond T. Pierrehumbert University of Chicago
Unified treatment of physical principles of planetary climates for advanced students and researchers in atmospheric science, Earth and planetary science. ‘The words ‘original’ and ‘textbook’ don’t often go together, but I think it is appropriate to use them both when describing this book. Ray Pierrehumbert has written a book that travels from the fundamentals to the complexities of the climate system as a whole, in a clear and logical fashion, covering not just the planet Earth but the principles underlying the climates of planets more generally. There is no other book quite like it.’ Dr Geoffrey K. Vallis, Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Lab, Princeton University and author of Atmospheric and Oceanic Fluid Dynamics
University of California, Los Angeles
Contents: Preface; 1. The big questions; 2. Thermodynamics in a nutshell; 3. Elementary models of radiation balance; 4. Radiative transfer in temperaturestratified atmospheres; 5. Scattering; 6. The surface energy balance; 7. Variation of temperature with season and latitude; 8. Evolution of the atmosphere; 9. A peek at dynamics; Appendix. Notation; Index.

The Science and Politics of Global Climate Change A Guide to the Debate Second edition Andrew Dessler Texas A & M University
and Edward A. Parson University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
Second edition of an acclaimed book provides up-to-date, integrated overview of climate change issue – science, technology, economics, policy, and politics. ‘This timely, informative and wellwritten book does an excellent job of explaining, in language accessible to everyone, the scientific basis for our current understanding of global warming and climate change, as well as societal implications and the political barriers to sound, rational policy. Its co-authors are well recognized experts in science and in public policy. I recommend it to anyone who wishes to gain a better understanding of this complex issue – what the debate is all about – and as a core textbook for introductory courses on the environment, climate change, or public policy.’ Neal Lane, Former Science Advisor to President Clinton and former Director of the US National Science Foundation

how conservationists should respond to these threats. ‘Over twenty years ago, when I first became interested in the impacts of climate change on wild plants and animals, the literature was limited and the field wide open. Now it is very hard to keep up. This marvellous book is exactly what I need to feel on top of the subject once more, and needs to be read not just by ornithologists, but by all ecologists struggling to understand and predict the impacts of climate change on the living world. The authors are two world-leaders on the impacts of climate change on birds. The text summarises the effects of climate change that have already happened, seeks to predict what we can expect in the future, and considers what conservation biologists can do to mitigate its effects. The coverage is comprehensive, and skilfully distils a large and complicated literature into a compelling … narrative.’ John Lawton, Chairman, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and Vice-President, RSPB Ecology, Biodiversity and Conservation

Second edition Murry L. Salby Macquarie University, Sydney
Murry Salby’s textbook provides an integrated treatment of processes controlling the Earth-atmosphere system for students and researchers. ‘The first edition is a classic. As a textbook it is unequalled in breadth, depth and lucidity. It is the single volume that I recommend to every one of my students in atmospheric science. The new edition improves over the previous edition, if that is possible at all, in three aspects: beautiful illustrations of global processes … from newly available satellite data, new topics of current interest … and a new chapter on the influence of the ocean on the atmosphere. These changes make the book more useful as a starting point for studying climate change.’ Professor Yuk Yung, California Institute of Technology

Beyond Smoke and Mirrors Climate Change and Energy in the 21st Century Second edition Burton Richter Stanford University, California
Global climate change is one of the most important issues humanity faces today. This updated, second edition assesses the sensible, senseless and biased proposals for averting the potentially disastrous consequences of global warming, allowing the reader to draw their own conclusions on switching to more sustainable energy provision. Burton Richter is a Nobel Prize-winning scientist who has served on many US and international review committees on climate change and energy issues. He provides a concise overview of our knowledge and uncertainties within climate change science, discusses current energy demand and supply patterns, and the energy options available to cut emissions of greenhouse gases. Written in non-technical language, this book
presents a balanced view of options for moving from our heavy reliance on fossil fuels into a much more sustainable energy system, and is accessible to a wide range of readers without scientific backgrounds – students, policymakers and the concerned citizen. Review of previous edition: ‘… a wonderfully balanced overview. It opens with a fine summary of the science linking carbon to climate … provides a concise primer on the economics of long-term climate policy, and concludes with a short, sensible, and well-argued set of opinions and policy recommendations.’ Physics Today Canto Classics

The Economics and Uncertainties of Nuclear Power François Lévêque Ecole des mines de Paris
This is an important resource for students, researchers, energy professionals and concerned citizens wanting to engage with the continuing debate on the future of nuclear power and its place in international energy policy. It provides a balanced, in-depth economic analysis of the costs, hazards, regulation and politics surrounding nuclear power. ‘François Lévêque uses his vast academic experience to help us understand the risks, opportunities and uncertainties of nuclear power. Nuclear power is a gamble and that’s why we have to think twice. We need books like this one that provide a balanced assessment of our options, which will allow people from any background to engage with the arguments and make up their own minds about this important issue.’ Jean-Michel Glachant, Chief-editor of Economics of Energy and Environmental Policy (EEEP) and Director of the Florence School of Regulation 2014 228 x 152 mm 349pp 3 b/w illus. 978-1-107-08728-6 Hardback £35.00 / US$55.00 For all formats available, see

Global Energy Justice Problems, Principles, and Practices Benjamin K. Sovacool Aarhus Universitet, Denmark
Greening the Globe World Society and Environmental Change Ann Hironaka University of California, Irvine
Globalization has moved us toward becoming a world society with a common culture. Greening the Globe argues that international efforts to address environmental problems are often successful in the long run by setting the political agenda, by empowering environmental groups and citizens, and by changing our perceptions of environmental problems. ‘Greening the Globe applies the world society perspective to understand the emergence and institutionalization of an international environmental regime. But Hironaka goes beyond policy diffusion to examine actual changes in environmental outcomes. This is a must-read for scholars interested in global social change dynamics regardless of their theoretical orientation.’ Francisco Ramirez, Stanford University, California 2014 228 x 152 mm 216pp 6 b/w illus. 978-1-107-03154-8 Hardback £60.00 / US$95.00 For all formats available, see

The Moral Challenge of Dangerous Climate Change
Past Experiences, Future Challenges Robert A. McLeman
Values, Poverty, and Policy Darrel Moellendorf
First comprehensive review of interaction between climate change and migration; for advanced students, researchers and policy makers.
Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt
This book examines the threat that climate change poses to projects of poverty eradication, sustainable development, and biodiversity preservation. It discusses the values that support these projects and evaluates the normative bases of climate change policy. This book regards climate change policy as a public problem that normative philosophy can shed light on. ‘This book is a penetrating and comprehensive first effort to tackle a largely unacknowledged but supremely important moral dilemma. It is a unique contribution to advancing the literature on climate change and shows the importance of our necessary initiatives to exit the fossil fuel regime by raising prices to decrease demand and to create a direct threat to the only source of energy now affordable to many of the world’s poorest struggling for sustainable development.’ Henry Shue, Centre for International Studies, University of Oxford

Environmental Markets A Property Rights Approach Terry L. Anderson Property and Environment Research Center
and Gary D. Libecap University of California, Santa Barbara
Environmental Markets explains the prospects of using markets to improve environmental quality and resource conservation. It compares standard approaches to environmental problems
using governmental management, regulation, taxation, and subsidization with a market-based property rights approach. This approach is applied to land, water, wildlife, fisheries, and air and is compared to governmental solutions. ‘Two of the world’s leading scholars on property rights and the environment offer a timely reminder that government is not always an effective steward of natural resources when markets fail at this task, and offer a rich review of the myriad creative ways in which market forces can be harnessed to improve environmental quality. The book’s fresh perspective on the question of how best to solve problems ranging from climate change to overfishing reminds economists and their students to ‘look before they leap’, with regulation as a solution.’ Sheila M. areas, charcoal production is an important livelihood activity for local communities. It is also one of the major causes of deforestation. This exemplifies the conflicts and tensions that exist between the protection of natural ecosystems and the exploitation of ever-diminishing natural resources, and the need to strike a balance between conservation and sustainable development. This and many related matters will be explored at the IUCN

Recording the proceedings of the IAU XXVII General Assembly, this volume of Highlights of Astronomy provides an up-to-date review of modern astrophysics, as discussed by 2400 participants. Covering planets, stars, galaxies, dark matter and modern cosmology, it gives a broad overview, allowing specialists and non-specialists alike to bring themselves up to date with the latest developments. This text brings together the work of observers and theoreticians from widely different fields who work towards a common goal: understanding the physics of the Universe. Together with the Proceedings of the IAU Symposia www.oryxthejournal.org 262–267, this volume examines all of the astrophysics presented at the General Assembly, and provides a valuable testament to the vigour and October Fauna & Flora International momentum of astrophysical discovery in 2009, the International Year of2014 · Volume 48 · Number 4 Astronomy.
