HELLO FROM THE TOWN CLERK Welcome back to Issue four of our e-newsletter! Thank you for signing up to our mailing list, we will continue to keep you updated with four issues a year! Between these updates, please keep an eye out across our social media pages and our website for the latest news. Since our last issue in April, we have been extremely busy with events. with theI TCamborne Community and Commerce H Awards, Trevithick Day and the Queen's Jubilee. It's been an exciting first half of 2022, and with our events programme ever-growing, the future is looking to be even bigger and better! We also have a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor in post, and look forward to their year ahead. Councillors Mike Champion and Zoe Fox will continue to support the work we do, and ensure that we provide the very best for the people of our Parish.

GRANTS Who have we funded so far this year?

Abbeyfield Camborne Society £500

Drama Express £500

Camborne Show Society £1200

DRAMA EXPRESS Drama Express provides opportunities for children and young people with complex disabilities to access the performing arts. Drama Express recognizes the importance of creating, developing, and sustaining peer group friendships through a shared experience of drama. This aims to end the isolation of many children and young people with complex disabilities, linking the benefits of drama to maintaining positive mental health and wellbeing. There is a current membership of twenty-five children and young people with disabilities including autism and asperser’s syndrome, sensory impairments, cognitive processing deficits, epilepsy, behaviours that challenge, restricted/limited mobility, learning difficulties, genetic disorders, dyspraxia and chronic neurological conditions. Many of the children and young people reside in the Camborne and surrounding areas as are the volunteers who support them. Drama Express is proud with it’s links to Camborne, having previously staged a short play about Richard Trevithick. The funding from Camborne Town Council will enable Drama Express to deliver a series of workshops. The Workshop themes have been suggested by Drama Express members as they wish to pursue a particular interest of their choice.

THE QUEEN'S PLATINUM JUBILEE For the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, Camborne Town Council ran two community events to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II 70 years on the throne. The celebrations started on the Thursday evening, with the Beacon Lighting Ceremony. The evening included performances from a local Bugler, and Holman's Climax Male Voice Choir. The Beacon was lit at 9:45, in line with the International Beacon Lightings, and was one of over 1500 Beacons to be lit across the world.

BEACON LIGHTING AND PICNIC IN THE PARK The celebrations continued over the weekend, with the Picnic in the Park on Sunday afternoon. We were joined by the Cornish Barista, Mr B's Ice-Cream Van, the Sweet Chariot and Swamp Circus, to enjoy a fun-filled afternoon in Camborne Recreation Ground. The weather was kind to us, and only rained once we'd finished packing up! All in all it was a lovely weekend enjoyed by everyone, and a chance for the community to come together to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee.

TREVITHICK DAY RETURNS

After two long years of being away, Trevithick Day returned to Camborne in April 2022.

After two years of being away, Trevithick Day returned to Camborne in April, and it definitely made itself known! Parades, Steam Engines and stalls filled the Streets, along with lots of people, both local and from further afield, marking the celebration of Camborne's heritage, and Richard Trevithick. The Library had an absolutely fantastic day, with entertainment from both Timmy Twist and the Story Republic. They also ran craft activities, and the day was extremely well attended, with a record breaking 250 people visiting the Library! The Mayor's civic event was also a huge success, with dignitaries from the local area coming together to enjoy a glass of punch and the opportunity to meet with one another after the Pandemic.

WHAT'S ON AT THE LIBRARY? Over the last month or so we have paid particular attention to the needs of our library users. We issued a short questionnaire to find out how we could improve the services we offer and in particular, the clubs we run for the community. We were delighted with the response, which gave us a clear indication of what changes were needed. As a result, we are now able to offer an extended range of clubs. Our new timetable is detailed here. All clubs are free and there is no need to book – just turn up and join in! We hope to see you soon!

WALKING ROUTES This trail walks participants out from Camborne town centre into the beautiful agricultural countryside and neighbouring mining villages of Penponds and Barriper. Whilst in the quaint village of Penponds visitors may wish to visit the childhood home of Richard Trevithick (Camborne’s most famous son) which is open to visitors during the summer months. Barriper is a welcoming village with a pub and its very own ‘harbour’ to explore. (From Mining Trails)

ROSEWARNE TOILETS REOPENED

On the 25th April, we reopened the Rosewarne toilets to the public. We are delighted to be able to take ownership of Rosewarne Toilets and are happy to be able to provide this facility to the town. The toilets will be opened every morning and closed just after tea time. There is a disabled toilet that is available for use with radar key. Checks and cleans will be conducted by Cormac who are contracted by the Town Council. Photo by Keith Larby.

CAMBORNE PRIDE Pride came to Camborne in July, and filled the grey skies with rainbows! It was a lovely afternoon, filled with families and community groups talking about their lived experiences and their own individual intersectionalities. This is an extremely important community event, to celebrate love and people in all their colours, and we cannot wait for it's return next year!

MEET THE MAYOR During the Full Council Meeting on Thursday 12th May, experienced Town Councillor Cllr Mike Champion was appointed as the new Mayor of Camborne for the municipal year. 'I thank the Council for having the confidence in me to lead the Town Council for the forthcoming year. It is a great honour to serve the People of Camborne and the greater Parish. I hope that we can continue to improve the services we offer and ensure the projects we aim to deliver come to fruition for the benefit of Camborne Parish.' Mayor Cllr Mike Champion. The Mayor is supported by Deputy Mayor Cllr Zoe Fox who was the Mayor for municipal year 2021-2022.

AMENITIES NEWS Wayne has recently joined our Amenities Team, in the new 'Amenities Operative' role. He is already proving himself to be a fantastic member of the team, going above and beyond to support our busy events programme. Wayne worked at Portreath Bakery and Falmouth University before joining us, and has experience in both grounds care and maintenance. His new role will see him out and about in the Parish, supporting the Amenities Technicians with keeping our green spaces tidy, and playing a key role in our new street weeding program.

WHAT'S ON WITH THE TEAM Our Amenities Team have been extremely busy over the last few months, making a start on weeding our Parish to get it looking nice and tidy! This is a service we have taken over from Cornwall Council, as we recognise how important it is to keep our streets looking at their absolute best. We'll be keeping on top of this through the summer, so make sure you keep an eye out for our A-Team when you're out and about! The team have also been out watering the flowers from this years floral display, so hopefully you've noticed the town is looking brighter! You may have also noticed that the fountain is back up and running in the Town Square, it's all in the little details that make our Parish feel special!
