Our magazine is a student project, written for youth by youth. The magazine was made to show the potential of each student and to capture all their memories while they are in high school. This project was created to give opportunity to students to debut their writing and design skills. Turn to the back pages to see the 27 CCF students, staff and guests who worked to make this magazine possible.

Editorial —
Welcome to our first student-created magazine in CCF. It is really exciting. Everyone has been waiting for our precious magazine to come out. Basically, it was my leadership project so I feel really great to turn it into a reality. It is really special for everyone who has been working hard to complete it. It is really great to see people pay lots of attention and work as a team to achieve this goal. We want to see it to stand out in CCF but we needed to use our inner strength to finish it. It gave us courage to strive for this as our goal together.

There are a bunch of articles they have put into our magazine. Most of the articles come from their own imagination. Even though the students weren’t professional writers, we could see that they worked very hard and did their best to complete their writing. The articles will be a really great experience for people who like to read books. It includes a variety of things but the intention of the articles is to show more about Cambodia and our community. The writers, photographers and designers have created really big changes in our magazine since we began the process. Without them, there wouldn’t be any attractions on each page. It is also the first time for the designers and photographers to design every page of the magazine. During their work, they met lots of challenges but they made big, positive changes by joining in with the magazine project.

I am really thankful to all people who helped me to complete my dream. I also acknowledge people who took part in this project, especially the writers, photographers and designers. You are some of the most important people in my life. I really want to show my gratitude to Nicky. He is the reason why I came up with this project and, despite the challenges with this project, I want to show everyone that I have stepped up to be a leader and I am growing mature now. A special thanks to our founder, Scott Neeson for allowing me to implement this project and to let our CCF’s kids grow through their involvement with this project. Another special person for me is my English teacher, Sharleen. I am really happy that you took part in this project and helped everyone in the team to improve their skills as writers. Without the financial resources of our sponsors, this magazine wouldn’t be printed. So as a CCF kid, I want to say thanks for people who let us advertise their names and organisations in this amazing project. Thank you to Stephen from Artifishal who helped to design and publish the magazine.

A Letter from The Founder Welcome to the inaugural edition of “Bangkert”. This new publication is the work of CCF’s youth leaders, providing an insight into the world we share and from their unique perspective. At a time when articulate communications and the habit of reading seem near extinction, I hope you find this magazine a refreshing, thoughtful alternative. The students who brought this magazine to life are amongst our most outstanding. Their enthusiasm shines through and, with your support, we hope to provide further editions. Thank you to all those who supported the creation of this first edition, not least of all Nicky Ward, Stephen from Artifishal, Sharleen, Rafa and our advertisers. Letter to the writers, whether for editorial or simply feedback, are welcome. Please send to

Words of wisdom.
By Paul Shelton, CCF Head of Education There are a lot of words of wisdom out there. Some of them encourage you to feel good about yourself and think positively. I think that is nice but positive thought isn’t enough. Some encourage you to have hope, optimism and faith that things will get better. I’m afraid I don’t really believe that either because the world can be a tough place. To me the most important thing is to face your challenges, realize that it’s going to take effort and that you may well fail. But with every failure you will learn something and as long as you keep trying, keep learning and keep refusing to give up you will be guaranteed of success. There is a professor of psychology called Angela Duckworth and she summed it up in two equations.
What does this mean? It means that your raw talent doesn’t count for anything unless it’s matched with effort. It means if you don’t have much talent but if you put in a lot of effort you will do better than the person with lots of talent who doesn’t try. Most importantly it means that effort counts twice. That your ability to keep at something even when it’s hard, even when you are struggling and even when you might fail or get stuck will determine your success. It’s this persistence, this ‘grit’ that will really make the difference. So don’t just go with the flow, decide what you want to do and make it happen. And most importantly when things don’t go your way; persist, learn, grow and don’t give up! To sum that up in words of wisdom I will use an old martial arts quote.

The GYLS is a four‑day program in an environment designed to boost leadership skills that will change lives and communities. It includes leadership simulation games, exercises and keynote speakers who present topics ranging from leadership styles to community contribution. Many young leaders from all around the world join this program each year.

Vannak, one of our GYLS students in 2018, got such a wonderful award of “Leader of the Week” during his trip in the United States. He said he was so excited and it was unbelievable to get an award of such honour. His message is that you must be very cheerful and have a close communication to everyone in your team. Be the one who motivates and inspires others to bring out all of your confidence, break out of your comfort zone and set your clear goals for the bright future ahead of you.

1. How to hide your emotions, when feeling really angry?
You have to settle down your anger first. It is the only thing that makes things better. We then have more time to solve and get advice from the teachers or someone who you trust.
2. I had an argument with my friends. What should I do?
You must talk to your friend first. Don’t think that we are a loser. Because friendship never dies, you will always meet each other for the rest of your life. They are the person you can rely on in the future.

3. There are many needs in my family like food, materials and others. As a member in a family, what can I help?
Study hard. Even though education is the long time investment, it is the weapon that can change your family’s situation today into the better one in the future. Only your own ability and knowledge can prevent the poverty. 4. I have always studied hard at school but still haven’t got good results. In what ways can I get better results?
Set clear goals about what do you want and when will you finish it. Maybe you are not good today but willingness and high commitment will make your dream come true. 5. Do you believe success and luck is linked together? Why and why not?
Of course, success and luck are meant to be destined. Luck is born from ability. Look at yourself to turn your obstacles into opportunities. Grab opportunities as much as you can and remember to work hard at school in order to get success.

We went to visit the Tuol Sleng Museum in Phnom Penh. It is a popular place for visitors to come and visit but it was not like this before the Khmer Rouge period. Before the Khmer Rouge took over Tuol Sleng, it was a school that helped with the development of education. After the Khmer Rouge took over the school, the classrooms became a place where people suffered. The playground became a place where people were tortured and many died. After the genocide, the education in this school died too. We felt that the leaders of the Khmer Rouge had a high level of education but they used their leadership and education in the wrong way. Education after the genocide went backwards in Cambodia because many teachers died.

They killed the people with education because the Khmer Rouge leaders did not think they would follow their instructions. We found out that they killed some of the masters of the Khmer martial arts known as Bokotar before the teachers and educated people were taken. The Khmer Rouge leaders were worried because they knew the martial arts masters would be able attack the Khmer Rouge soldiers and leaders. During the Khmer Rouge, they tried to make Cambodia a place where everyone was equal but it was not like that. The Khmer Rouge had their own schools where they tried to make students believe in the importance of teamwork to make their cause stronger. They made strong discipline for the people. They made people lie and hurt them to make them say they betrayed their country. BY YOUTH

If the Khmer leaders needed medical treatment, they could use medicine from France, but the Khmer people could not. They had to use traditional Khmer remedies and would be punished if they used other medicine because they would be seen to be betraying their country. They wanted students to work hard, to never complain, to fight for the Khmer Rouge and be prepared to die for the Khmer Rouge. Children were separated from their families and sometimes did not know what their families looked like, if they ever saw them again. Before the Khmer Rouge, we had a good education level. After the Khmer Rouge, we had to start at zero. Many of the people who taught education and about the Khmer culture disappeared because of the Khmer Rouge. Many older people suffered and missed out on their education during the Khmer Rouge, but we have a chance to have a good education now. We are one of the developing countries in South-East Asia.

We wrote a wish in the guest-book to remember the people who lost their lives to the Khmer Rouge. This is a place to remember. It’s a place with many memories. When people travel to a new place, they usually want to go to a happy place. We think this is a place you need to come to visit to help know more about one part of Cambodia’s history. Cambodia has a very old and rich culture. We know we can do this ourselves but we also know we need help from other people for a little while. We know this part of history stopped us from having a modern, developed country but now we can look with hope for a bright future.

After visiting the Tuol Sleng Museum, we felt much more relaxed when we visited the King’s Palace. It was raining when we arrived but it didn’t matter. There were many Kbach flame symbols on the walls. Everything had a meaning. We thought it was like a belief. Maybe the flames are a powerful symbol for the King to make people think about protecting the country. We went to the building where Scott Neeson met with the King. Visitors could look into the building but cannot walk inside it. There was a lot of gold and it was very fancy. We saw so many flowers and plants around the palace. We had never seen so many in one place in Phnom Penh. The plants had signs near them so you could learn their names. The palace is placed in a part of Phnom Penh where the rivers meet together. You can see the rivers when you look out from the steps to the King’s meeting place. There is a small museum in the palace grounds where you can see the wedding clothes of the former King and Queen and the royal sword. There are also small souvenirs in the shape of elephants and turtles. We went around the corner and found walls covered with many paintings. They were being restored because they are so damaged and old. There was a smaller copy of Angkor Wat in the grounds. You can go to a place with running water to pray. When a King and Queen die, they build a large stupa to put their remains into. There is one being built for the current King, but it isn’t finished yet.
We would recommend that you go to Toul Sleng Musuem first and visit the King’s Palace next, to help you see two different ways of learning about Cambodian history and culture.

Khmer New Year is one of the most important Festivals in Cambodia. “Sus’Dei Chnam Thmei” is a three day festival starting around the 13th or 14th of April (depending on leap years) to celebrate the New Year. It is the end of the harvesting season, when farmers enjoy the fruits of their labor before the rainy season begins. Everyone is out on the streets wishing blessings on each other and their families success, peace and happiness. The three days of Khmer New Year are:

Let’s see how our school is before Khmer New Year. It is time for fun because we participate in some traditional customs like playing our traditional games. The games were founded during the Khmer Empire which connects us with our Culture. It can be fun and also prevent the traditions from being lost. These are our customs. They help us to have happiness and peace in the upcoming New Year.

Everything has changed. It is getting better and better. Before, my house was near here. There was just a big pool of water here. It was uncomfortable to live around here. There were no houses around the big water, but the big water was just full of rubbish. The people who collect the garbage used to live on the land for free but it was not comfortable to live. There was no school and it was very dirty. People would just put garbage in the water. It was a very big change of the environment. I am very happy to be a secondary student at this school. Before CCF had a school but it was not like the NCA. This school is a very international one. Here we can learn all the subjects, but especially we can put into practice what we have learned.

Now One thing I love the most is science club. Before we didn’t have science club. We just studied by the book and the teacher explained but now we have the real lessons so we have more idea about how it is. Now we are more comfortable to study and practice what we have learned. When I told people in America about the NCA and our organization started by Scott Neeson, that we have 12 subjects we study, we have labs and studio rooms, learn science and robotics, they say it sounds like an amazing place. I spoke with them about then and now, and they were shocked, they could not believe we came from such a place.

In the past, this was a dirty place to live. Most of the villagers here are garbage collectors or construction workers, and so they live in a poor state. When I walked along the road I saw around here there were many insecure houses. It was not a safe place to be. Before this was a crazy place. I used to think this place was disgusting and I did not feel good here. Why? Because sometimes there was the crazy people, the drug people, the crime people around here. I used to feel very unsafe around here. But now it is different. Many of the people in the village act different. For me now that we are at the NCA all day, we’re not halfday with CCF and half-day with public school, and we have international standard education things are a lot better. However, I feel it does not matter how much the place change, having a nice building, but it is the education that changes you. The way that you think, how you engage with the education, that is what is important.

Written by Ko Rithy and Meas Kanha
In this article, we talk about after school teen activities to look at what we like to do with our friends or family in our free time. Many kids in Cambodia do something like talking or playing on some apps such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. This can give them less benefit if they just play but all the kids in CCF are very lucky. We have a super, golden opportunity by doing something very special and important after school.

Rithy: “As I am that exact type of kid who has been with CCF for four years, I’ve learnt a lot of activities to do after school. There are so many kinds of activities such as leadership events and outing trips. One of the most important events in CCF which is influencing the next generation and is expanding our message around Cambodia is the Annual Youth Leadership Event (AYLE). That is my favourite event. It has changed my life so far and I am writing for this magazine just because of how much AYLE inspired me. There are so many benefits to these outing trips. We don’t just go for a walk to see the views but we also do activities which give us more community connection and build our leadership style. Some examples are like Tom Shoes distribution and field trips. The kids at CCF mainly help each other by giving advice,

Besides this, CCF has known some companies like SMART. If they have some entertainment, they usually invite us to become involved with it.

“Whenever they have free time, CCF kids never skip sport class because we think it is the best way to gain lots of benefits like increased health, increased skills and to relieve stress. The two most interesting sports we always like to play are football and basketball. As well as playing these two sports, we also compete with other teams to have an opportunity to compete all over the world. For example, three of our classmates were chosen to play in the 2018 Homeless World Cup.
