And for the past one year (2018) until now, I have been staying and studying in Melbourne, however I am still a part of the CCF family. It has been about a year since Sophy moved to Australia to study and we called her to see how life was like as an international student.

I was very thrilled and electrified of course. I remembered what I thought in my head such as: how proud my parents could be of me, how proud could I be about myself, how a good role model to other students I could be, how bright my future could be and how excited for me to live abroad all by myself.
How did you get the scholarship?
responsible for it, all I needed to do was to wait for the final result, which was a pass or a fail. I was told to keep revising maths and English as my daily work and I did so. I told myself I must learn at least one new word per day. Despite doing revision, I also worked and kept doing what needed to be done as a CCF student.
Well, the scholarship was originally provided to CCF for students to give all their best toward their studies as well as being optimistic about their futures. I was encouraged to apply for this scholarship by my peers and teachers. I was not qualified for this scholarship if it was based on good academic performance alone, but also because I was a risk-taking person, which made me a little different from others. Honestly, I am not very certain of why I got this scholarship as well, but I hope what I mentioned above was the reason to this question. What preparation did you do before going to Melbourne?

to do. I tried to remember what I did back there so my next travelling would be easier. Secondly, I was struggling with the method of commuting to and from school. It is because I have to use “tram” to travel and tram needs a card to tapped on/off to be able to go through. It does not sound difficult at all, but to a person like me, this is completely a new experience since I have never had anything like this in my country. To be more precise and accurate, I had never ridden on any public transport before. Therefore, it was reasonable for me to be scared. Another difficulty was with the education system over here. The subjects and learning styles were distinct from what I used to learn back in Cambodia. And of course, everything was harder and more intense, especially the workload. Lastly, I was not prepared for the cold weather at all. It was a bit too cold to bear, so I had to wear layers of clothes to school every day. Luckily, I never got sick from it.
There were many challenges when I first arrived here. One of the challenges was with my journey from Cambodia to Australia. This was not really an obstacle I encountered AFTER I arrived here, but I just want to mention it since it is worth hearing. Hahah… I had never experienced travelling abroad alone before. Well, I went to the US once but with staff supervision for the first time ever for a study exchange, but coming to Australia on my own was very scary. I had no idea of what to do or where to go, but I was brave enough to keep asking whoever I found on my way about what

CCF teachers choose students based on their academic test results. Students need to have good behaviour, to be smart at school, to be active in their class and for their family to have a good relationship with CCF. Before they joined ISPP, they had to do a test every Saturday to prepare.

This meant that ISPP provided a lot of things to the scholarship students for free. This includes transport to and from school, school fees, after school and extra summer school support, clothing and bag allowance, a laptop, stationery and school supplies. Dana said that she was so nervous but also very excited. Teachers in every subject are foreigners except for the Khmer teacher. Dana said that it was sometimes hard to communicate with the teachers because of their language. There are also different subjects at ISPP compared to CCF and the Khmer General Education schools. She said that it was also
different because the students went to the subject teachers’ classrooms instead of the subject teacher coming into the students’ classroom. They had summer holidays which were different to Khmer school holidays. The students are happy at ISPP because they have made friends with others in their classrooms.

Since then the program has grown to be an important part of CCF’s work in Steung Meanchey ranging from leadership training on concepts of values, human rights, gender rights and good citizenship, to leadership events that build confidence, team work, creative thinking and decision making. Students are also encouraged to give back to the community to become role models and provide community support such as feeding hungry children, helping senior citizens and running literacy and mathematics classes for both adults and young children.

A little girl, called Ros Sreynin, studies at CCF. Before she was enrolled at CCF, she was very thin because her mother didn’t have enough money to buy food. Afterwards, her mum took her for an interview to ask for help from CCF. Every evening, Sreynin always goes to CCF to get food and play in running games they have as part of the food program. From the age of 14, AYLE Ambassadors from CCF are selected by the Key Organiser Team. They attend the AYLE for 2 days and 3 nights. It has been held at a different location each year. Last year, AYLE was held in a new place created from a series of old warehouses called The Factory. Some of the activities in previous years have included speeches, leadership games such as “Corpse on the Air”, meditation/ mindfulness activities, a time for debriefing and choosing Leader of the Day and Leader of the Week. The 2018 AYLE was different to previous years as we invited another school to engage in the event with our CCF students. It ran so smoothly. Thy Rina, who was one of the 2018 Ambassadors, said that it was her first year to attend a leadership event like this one. She was in a GYLS team during her time in the U.S.A. called RIO. She was really scared to have unknown roommates with her but she was encouraged from team supporters to make friends. She became excited to be in team RIO because her team was cheerful and made fun happen in the team. Thy Rina said, “Everyone inspired me,” and mentioned, “ I really love the event so much. Activities such as team building games made me transform myself into a dynamic girl.” After her experiences in the GYLS, Thy Rina didn’t expect to learn as much as she did in the AYLE. According to the official TOMS website, there are now 70 countries in which humanitarian organisations such as CCF have been supported by TOMS to provide shoes for children within their existing programs. Here’s one of our students to explain how the TOMS Shoes Program works at CCF. 18

He said of his experience, “ I am surprised how clever the children are in the countryside. The children are so friendly in the country. We learn about situations in that village...It is very hard for the people. According to Vannak, many of the people are farmers who had dropped out of school. They face other issues with water and sewerage. Many of the villagers are not aware of safe hygiene practices. Part of a TOMS Shoes Program visit includes the CCF volunteers teaching hygiene awareness to the villagers.

The CCF volunteers try to make sure they have enough shoes and enough of the sizes they need. He said that the first priority was for local students so it was sometimes a challenge if some people came to collect shoes before the students were given theirs. Sometimes there are 500800 people and it’s hard for our small team to know who are students or not, especially with so many lines wanting shoes all at once! Some people have bad feelings or they are feeling very hot if they have to wait in lines for a long time. Vannak believed there was a great benefit for CCF student volunteers to expand their outside knowledge of places beyond Phnom Penh. It was also of great benefit to the villagers to get shoes and gain awareness of ways to improve their health by protecting their feet with shoes and to learn about hygiene. Vannak said that it was great to work with the TOMS Shoes program as a way to share our knowledge with each other. FOR YOUTH

To become part of the program, he said that we need to sign up to join the program.
The Granny program is one of the programs that CCF has accomplished, besides directly providing education to children in the target areas. The top management at CCF found that elderly people took an important role to develop a better generation. The Granny program was aimed at providing essential care to the most vulnerable elderly ladies and gentlemen. It has also provided benefits back from them who are role models for Junior Leadership boys and girls. 20

15 years in Steung Meanchey
Scott Neeson sat down with CCF granny, Bun Sen, and former CCF student, Phoun Srey Oun to talk about CCF’s 15 years in Steung Meanchey. Granny Bun Sen is one of the very first people Scott met when he visited the Steung Meanchey garbage dump in 2003 and has supported her from the beginning. She was caring for many children who had been left on the dump and she
became his trusted eyes and ears on the ground of who needed help. Phoun Srey Oun joined CCF in 2006 and Scott supported her and her family. Srey Oun started university in 2014 and also works for CCF as a Community Relations Officer. Now with a good job and stable income all Srey Oun’s siblings live with her in Steung Meanchey. MY YOUTH

Scott: I didn’t know. I was very new to Cambodia and she was the one who knew all the kids here. Some of the local mothers there, they would not tell me the truth. Bun Sen would always tell me the backgrounds of all the kids and their circumstances. I always trusted her. She was one of the very first people I spoke to and she introduced me to the very first CCF kid, Sreynich. Sreynich has now graduated from university and she is doing really well. All her siblings, Sreytouch and Sreyneang are also with CCF.

already studying at PSE. But then I met with your mother and asked her about everything. She was not so happy talking to me at the very beginning but I still tried to ask her a lot of questions. I found out you were absent a lot from school at PSE. Your issue was you wanted to study but you needed to work to support the family. That was why you were finally brought into CCF. Your sister was very underweight back then. But she is growing normal now and just graduated university. Your mum was a great women. I was very proud of her and I know she was very proud of you too. Srey Oun: For the past 14 years you have worked very hard to help CCF and all the kids, have you ever felt tired? Scott: Yes, I am very tired. In the early days I could not sleep at night knowing there was going to be some kids out there on the dump who needed help. Srey Oun: There are many CCF kids. Some who succeed, some don’t, and some even get worse. How do you feel about that? Scott: I love the fact that some succeed. Not just in education, high school and university but a good life, with a good husband or partner. I do know that those who leave education early, a lot of them get stuck. They get married early or don’t get married, but they have a baby and the husband goes away. They are pretty much stuck. They are still scavenging garbage with one baby, or two babies. But how do you feel about those children? Srey Oun: To me I feel so much regret. If they fail when they already tried very hard, I feel so sad. But those who don’t try, I feel regret about all that CCF has tried to do for them.

Scott: We have tried very hard to keep them in school. There are good examples but is there anything we could do more to keep them in school? Srey Oun: Outside influence is a factor. If we could keep very close attention to all these kids, it is good. Some kids might need very close attention, need more time from CCF staff to be aware of their needs and problems, to understand why they would drop out, what are the reasons behind what influences them. Granny: Do you remember when I was very sick at the hospital for more than a month? Scott: She was very sick and I took her to Kosamak Hospital. She thought she would die, so she stopped eating and the doctor agreed. However, when the doctor came back he told me that she was dying because she had stopped eating. clever. She filled it with water, made it very soft. A few other grannies visited her in the hospital, sang songs to her. Granny: He visited me and carried me in his hands. I used to have three sons. They’ve never carried me like this. He is like my son. I love him so much. Scott: I told her I needed her around to help. She promised me she would eat more and be healthy. The new home that Bun Sen is staying in is in front of the NCA. I love that she can see all the improvements of the kids and the school, and all the events that happen there. She is so well known. She is such a celebrity that everyone wants to meet her. Granny: The area around here was very dirty and flooding before. No big building. Not many people. But so many people here in this area now. So many CCF donors come to see me now. Scott: I wish for the next 10 or 15 years, she is still there watching things. I wish she will be there to see me when I retire. By then I would see us as a much smaller organisation. We will be more specialised on high quality education. Most of the programs will have succeeded. Less needs. Most of the public services like healthcare would have improved. Srey Oun: In the next 15 years, the first thing I want is a house on my own and to get married. I will stay in the city. I won’t forget Scott though. When he is old, I will visit him.

He said, “Hong Kong is such a heaven to me.” He felt proud of himself as he was the only child in his family to have a great opportunity to board a plane. Vannak has already visited many places but the most exciting time for him was to attend the gala. He had to wear a suit and tie like Scott Neeson. Vannak said that his heart was beating fast while “600 eyes” were looking at him during his speech on the stage but he went on to say that he felt better after 5 minutes. Rubina explained that a sponsor is found by posting a notice on the CCF website. They have a student list in the website for the sponsor to look at. When the sponsor wants to support the kids, they can click on the photo and they can read a little information about the kids. Their real names are not put on the website because CCF wants to protect the kids. The sponsor’s email address is also checked to make sure the children are safe to make contact with their sponsor. The children and their sponsor can email each other or sometimes the sponsor comes to visit their sponsor kids once or twice a year. The sponsor can take the kids for an outing or shopping but we always have a CCF staff member with them. 34

By Rina and Kung Nanh We spoke with Mei Neang and Heng Somaly to find out about Buddhist Monk blessings. Here’s what they told us. Cambodia is a deeply Buddhist country where everything is connected. It relates to the spiritual belief which is based on karma and the after-life. The monk blessing is part of that culture. Cambodian people believe that a blessing by monks brings good luck and protection. The monk blessing is a traditional ceremony that delivers good wishes and luck. It helps to bring success and happiness in return. CCF always invites monks to perform in our CCF events including every Khmer New Year Day. The Khmer blessing is to ask for sympathy from the monk as we get ready to go back to our hometown or anywhere else. We ask the monks to help us have a good trip and meet kind people. We believe the monk blessing helps to make our mental bodies better and give us relief. It helps to make us feel calm and adapt to every circumstance.

As is the custom, the attendees in the ceremony should keep a silent manner while the monk is chanting and performing rituals. Most of the attendees wear white in the ceremony. We believe the white colour is an inherently positive colour which symbolises colour, purity, goodness and prosperity. Buddha said that the holy showering and monk blessing was not meant to frighten people. However, after the monk blessing, every person feels excited and completely happy. All of the students always give wishes to each other before the Khmer New Year.
