The seventh biennial Agendo Exhibition and Prize opened last night in the David Williams Gallery, Camberwell Grammar School. The exhibition celebrates the work of young emerging artists, one of whom takes home a cheque for $10,000 generously donated by Peter and Jane Crone. We are very grateful to Peter and Jane for their continued support of this event.

The judges were very impressed by the quality of our finalists this year, and after much deliberation awarded the prize to Ruby Pilven for her ceramics work Salt and Gold.

Agendo has now become a highly regarded event in the Melbourne Arts calendar and the standard and range of the entries received increases on each occasion. If you were not able to attend last night’s Open Night, there will still be an opportunity for you to attend the exhibition, which will be running in the Gallery on Monday 12 August, Tuesday 13 August and Wednesday 14 August from 9.00am to 4.00pm.

Middle School Production - To Kill a Mockingbird Tickets for this year’s Middle School Play, a classic novel and storyline To Kill a Mockingbird are now selling quickly. There will be three performances in the Middleton Theatre, Performing Arts Centre, on the evenings of Thursday 15, Friday 16 and Saturday 17 August at 7.30pm.

Time Change - Year 7 Immunisations The second round of Year 7 HPV Immunisations will now be held in the afternoon on Thursday 15 August 2019 in the Camberwell Room, beginning at 2.00pm. Badminton AGSV Premiership The Badminton AGSV Grand Final was held on the weekend between Camberwell and Yarra Valley.

Congratulations to the Camberwell Badminton Team consisting of William Nguyen (Year 10), Otto Zhao (Year 10), William Li (Year 11), Peter Zhao (Year 11), Luke Chen (Year 12) and Jason Tran (Year 12) who won the AGSV Badminton Premiership for the Winter 2019 Season and were presented with their Premiership Trophy at yesterday’s Assembly.

Otto, Peter and Jason all won their singles to set up an insurmountable 3-0 lead. Playing through a bad knee, William Nguyen played the fourth singles superbly, going down in 3 sets but giving Camberwell the muchneeded extra point that secured victory. The team of four then won both doubles to put the result beyond doubt in a commanding 5 - 1 win, bringing home the premiership for the 5th consecutive year.

Well done to William, Otto, William, Peter and Luke and notably to captain Jason who gave a very humble speech in victory, recognising the achievements of the opposition while giving credit to the best players as well. Congratulations to the team on a great season.

AGSV Cross Country The AGSV Cross Country team performed strongly throughout the season finishing in 4th place, one position higher than last year. There were outstanding individual performances, highlighted by Harrison Car, who received the silver medal for the Year 7 division, and Tom Bowers, who became the first CGS athlete in 20 years to win a gold medal in the Year 11 division and was presented with his gold medal at yesterday’s Assembly. Congratulations to Harrison and Tom on their achievements.

World Junior Badminton Championships Congratulations to Otto Zhao (Year 10) who has been selected to represent Australia in the upcoming World Junior Badminton Championships in Kazan, Russia during the September School Holidays. Otto will participate in a training camp at the AIS in Canberra this month and next month travelling to England for additional training. It is a great achievement to be selected to represent Australia and we congratulate Otto and wish him the best of luck for the Championships.

Spring Sports are an additional sports opportunity for students at Camberwell Grammar. It is pleasing to see that we had such interest in Water Polo that we have enough for four Junior teams this season - double from last year. The Athletics season is very short, culminating with the AGSV Carnival at Albert Park on Wednesday 11 September. The carnivals leading up to that event help us to select the best athletes to represent the school at this prestigious event. If boys are keen athletes, trying athletics for the first time or simply wanting to improve their fitness with girls and boys from several other schools, they are encouraged to get down. Information Morning and School Tours Tomorrow Many thanks to all the boys who volunteered their time to assist with School tours during tomorrow’s Information Morning. The boys are truly a highlight of these tours.

Cross Country The House Cross Country Carnival will take place next Thursday. The boys will be bussed out to Westerfolds Park for their run. The boys will be out of class between periods 3-5, ensuring they are back in time for lunch.

This is always a fun day out and boys are permitted to wear their House shirts and Sports uniform for the day (including to and from School).

Junior School Scout News It is my great pleasure to congratulate Angus Egan (Year 5) on achieving a milestone in a youth member’s Scouting journey. Angus, 1st Canterbury Scout Troop, has earned the Grey Wolf. Only a small percentage of Scouts reach this level. Well done Angus on working hard and challenging yourself in self-discipline, teamwork, and leadership.

Indigenous Literacy Foundation - Great Book Swap Book Stall The Year 5 Leadership Executive members are aiming to raise money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

We are asking each boy and teacher to donate 1 or 2 books from their bookshelf that they have enjoyed but no longer want. They must be in good condition. We ask that boys check with their parents before they bring donated books to School. Please bring your books for donation to the boxes in the Junior School Reception.

On Thursday 15 August, during lunch time, we will sell the books at our Great Book Swap Book Stall.

Please bring gold coins ($1 and $2 coins) and buy 1 or 2 books.

We will send the money raised to the foundation so that they can buy quality books for Indigenous children to enjoy. We hope that you all donate and buy books for this worthy cause.

Book Week is Coming!

Book Week ‘Reading is my Secret Power’ excitement continues to build in the Junior Library. A reminder that the annual Junior School Book Week dress up day is Wednesday 21 August. We hope boys are working on their book character costumes for this fun event. We have many exciting activities planned, including visiting author presentations from Andrew Hansen, Jessica Roberts and Kylie Dunstan in Week 6. The boys have also been enjoying a variety of creative lunchtime activities in our MakeIt@Library program in the lead up to Book Week. Boys have made secret reading glasses, clay and cardboard constructions, used simple electronics and explored coding programs all inspired by Book Week shortlisted titles. The Junior Library is also running two Book Week competitions, ‘Design-a-Bookmark’ and ‘Guess the Teacher Book Print’. Entry forms can be collected from the Junior School Library and winners announced during Book Week, 19 to 23 August.

Premiers’ Reading Challenge This year we have a record number of over 60 students participating in the Premiers’ Reading Challenge.

The Challenge finishes on Friday 23 August which is at the end of Book Week.

Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 need to read or experience 30 books from the PRC list. Years 3, 4 and 5 read 15 books from the PRC list. Parents please check that your son’s reading list is up to date and that all books read so far have been recorded online. When the Challenge concludes we will verify their reading record.

This is the time of the year when boys (and Teachers) fall victim to Winter germs. Parent support is greatly appreciated to help us prevent the spread of coughs and colds by encouraging healthy habits including covering up when coughing or sneezing, using tissues, and washing hands regularly, especially after a visit to the toilets. If any child has been suffering from an infectious disease, the Health Department regulations must be observed and the School notified. Boys suffering from infectious cold symptoms should also be kept at home.

Please ensure that your son does not return to School prematurely after an illness. This will ensure that he does not pass on his infection to other boys and adults, and it will also enable him to fully participate in all School activities. If he is not able to participate in a Physical Education lesson, please write a note in his Diary.

Baseball has its final round before finals this weekend, the Real Tennis team play their internal championships this Sunday, our Fencers are preparing for their final event on Sunday 18 August and the Snowsports squad are gearing up for the Victorian Interschools Championships in Week 6. Otherwise, Winter sport has come to a close for all other sports. Congratulations to everyone involved on another prosperous season, especially to our staff and external coaches for providing our students with lifelong learning experiences.

The Spring Season has commenced and competitions get underway this afternoon with Round 1 of the Junior Water Polo season. The Intermediate and Open teams play tomorrow morning. We have over 80 students competing in the Water Polo program this season. You can support our teams at the Ngaere Wilson Pool on Level 1 of the Sports Centre. Athletics have their first round of trials tomorrow at the Tom Kelly Athletics Track in Doncaster.

The AGSV versus APS representative matches are being held at Wesley College (Glen Waverley Campus) tomorrow and we have students representing the School in Badminton, Hockey, Football and Soccer. Good luck to Year 12 students Jason Tran (Badminton – Captain), Nicholas Gooden (Co-Captain), Charlie Harper and James Sampson (Hockey), Ryan Walsh (Football – Captain), Niko Verrios and Tristan Patsiotis (Soccer), and Tom Bowers and Taran Laurence (both Year 11, Cross Country) in your respective matches.

Invitations have been emailed to parents regarding end of season presentation nights for various sports. It would be great to see as many students and families there as possible to celebrate the season.

Sport Report The First Hockey team were one of three teams competing in a Grand Final on the weekend, in this case against Trinity. A strong start from Trinity saw Camberwell go one down early, however, a strong fight back from Camberwell, highlighted by some solid alertness and opportunistic finishing from James Sampson (Year 12), saw Camberwell come into half-time with the score level at 2-2. Unfortunately, Trinity managed to regain the lead at 3-2 and looked to kill the game knowing they only needed a draw to win the premiership. But with ten minutes to go, smart pressing from Ed Harper (Year 9) allowed him to dispossess a Trinity defender inside Camberwell’s attacking circle eventually finding Charlie Harper (Year 12), who put Camberwell level at 3-3. Despite valiant efforts to score a late goal, Trinity were able to resist Camberwell’s constant forward pressure to keep the score tied, which unfortunately was enough to see Camberwell lose the Premiership given that Trinity had finished the season on top of the table.

The first badminton team faced Yarra Valley in their ultimate encounter for the season. After salvaging their season from third place, Camberwell made it into the final in form and more importantly full of confidence.

Otto Zhao (Year 10), Jason Tran (Year 12) and Peter Zhao (Year 11) continued their dominant form all season as they beat their singles opponent convincingly to set up an early 3-0 lead. Battling a knee injury, Bill Nguyen (Year 10) won a crucial set in his game and after both doubles matches were victorious, Camberwell came away with a commanding 5-1 win bringing home the premiership for the 5th consecutive year.

In a quest for Camberwell’s maiden premiership, the First XI Soccer team travelled to PEGS full of confidence after their convincing win against them during the regular season. PEGS drew first blood early in the game after they were able to direct the ball into the back of the net after a corner kick. However, Camberwell were able to rally as they evened the score after an impressive free kick by Jasper Guthrie (Year 12) found the top corner of the goal. The ever-reliable Dean Christofilopoulos (Year 11) was once again impressive in defence denying multiple chances at goal, while Lachie Waycott (Year 11) looked dangerous in attack with his run up the wings. Unfortunately the win was not meant to be, as PEGS once again scored off a fortunate corner kick to put them 2-1 up as Camberwell were unable to find an answer in time.

The final round of the Cross Country season was hosted at Yarra Valley, as Camberwell looked to make a push into the top 3 overall. The seniors once again were dominant in their runs with a third-place finish thanks to contributions from Taran Lawrence (Year 11), Matthew Power, Patrick Rogan, Patrick Canny and Tom Bowers (all Year 11), who became the first Camberwell runner in 20 years to take out the gold medal in his age group. The intermediates were equally as strong, finishing fourth on the day, off the back of another great race by Jimmy Smith (Year 10) and a personal best time by Colby Gale (Year 9). Overall for the season, Camberwell finished fourth, one place up from last year, and promising signs from the younger year levels depict a bright outlook for the future.

Despite not receiving some of the results we hoped for, it is still a tremendous achievement for three of our teams to make their respective grand finals and hopefully this experience sets up success for future years.

I would also like to congratulate those boys who have been selected for the AGSV Representative Team in their sports. Special mentions goes to Nick Gooden (Hockey) and Ryan Walsh (Football) (both Year 12) who have been selected to captain the AGSV side. We wish these boys the best of luck in their games at Wesley College this Saturday.

Inside Monash Seminar - Music Get the inside story of what it is really like to study at Monash. You will hear from a current student, a past student and an academic. It is the best 90 minutes you could spend researching your course. This event will take place on Tuesday 13 August from 6.30pm to 8.00pm at the Drama Theatre, Building 68, 55 Scenic Boulevard. Twilight Tour of La Trobe Wildlife Sanctuary A high proportion of Australia’s unique wildlife is nocturnal and emerges only at night. So, come out after dark and learn more about the La Trobe Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the longest running ecological restoration projects in Australia. During the tour, your guide will use a spotlight to point out and spot some of our nighttime creatures. This event will take place on Tuesday 13 August from 6.15pm to 7.45pm for a minimal entry fee. VTAC Webinar Those who missed last week’s VTAC evening may be interested in joining the free VTAC webinar for students and parents next Wednesday 14 August from 7.00pm to 8.00pm. This webinar will cover the complete VTAC application process, including using CourseSearch, the preference system, SEAS, scholarships, the ATAR and scaling. Special Entry Access Schemes Access Melbourne is a special entry and access scheme offered by the University of Melbourne to support domestic students whose circumstances have adversely affected their education. Those who meet the SEAS criteria will need the following minimum ATARs to be considered for a place: • ATAR of 78.00 for a place in Design or Science • ATAR of 80.00 for a place a place in Arts • ATAR of 88.00 for a place a place in Commerce • ATAR of 90.00 for a place a place in Biomedicine Students must apply through the Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) application on the VTAC website.

The Monash Guarantee stipulates that every Monash undergraduate degree has a Monash Guarantee ATAR, which is lower than the expected selection rank for that course. For most courses, if a student meets the eligibility criteria, achieves the minimum ATAR and completes all course prerequisites, they will be eligible for a place at Monash. To be considered, Year 12 students must submit a VTAC course application and complete a Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) application, including any required documentation.

Christmas Puddings - We Need Your Help!

Mixing Days The Christmas Pudding preparation has well and truly begun. A big thank you to all who have helped chop, zest and weigh so far. Our mixing and cooking days are now in sight! This part of the process requires ‘many hands to make light work’ and to make it easy the two-hour Friday morning mixing sessions have been divided into year levels. Absolutely no baking skills are required, and even if you can only spare an hour it is very much appreciated. If you cannot make your year levels allocated day, feel free to jump into one of the others, everyone is welcome to any or all sessions!

These sessions are a great opportunity to meet and chat with other parents. There has been a lot of laughs and stories shared already! If you have time stay after the preparation is done for a cuppa and some morning tea.

Cooking Days The Auxiliary are also looking for volunteers to help with the pudding cooking which we do over the weekend following each mixing day using the CGS Camberwell Room Kitchen ovens. It only takes fifteen minutes of your time to unload a batch and load in the next and if we have plenty of helpers it lightens our load. Detailed instructions and a demonstration will be given.
