With the cold and wintry conditions comes coughs, colds and infections and currently we are experiencing a high level of illness throughout the whole of the school. Our Co-ordinator of School Health Services, Ms Rhonda Nicholson has once again asked parents not to send their sons to school if they are unwell, as this only passes illness on to other students and staff. If your son presents at the Health Centre with cold/flu symptoms, you will be contacted to collect him and asked to keep him at home until he feels well and is no longer infectious. Should you have any concerns about the health of your sons, or if you would like further information, Ms Rhonda Nicholson can be contacted on 9835 1777 or shc@cgs.vic.edu.au. Latin Reading Competition Last week two students from each year level 7 to 12 participated in the interschool Latin Reading Competition held at Fintona. Students had to read a pre-prepared Latin passage in front of two judges. Congratulations to Darcy Livingstone (Year 9) and Jai Singh (Year 12) who each won their division with a powerful delivery of poetry.

World Youth International Soccer Tournament Kai Sapolu (Year 9) represented his club (Box Hill United SC) and Australia at the largest youth soccer tournament in the world, the Gothia Cup in China last month. Kai’s team progressed through the draw undefeated and won the quarter and semi-finals to play in the Grand Final against the defending champions.

Kai’s team was beaten by Indonesia 3-1 and he was awarded a silver medal. Congratulations Kai on this great sporting achievement.

Middle School Blokes’ Book Breakfast It was an early start on Tuesday morning for the Blokes’ Book Breakfast. This is a wonderful tradition to celebrate the wonders of reading. Special guest Mr Michael Gerard Bauer presented an entertaining talk on the writing process and his growth in public speaking and storytelling. Like so many who have mastered their art, he was very open and honest about both his failures and triumphs; recognising that without making mistakes, he never would have published any of his books. A big thank you to all who turned up to enjoy a hot breakfast provided by Ms Janine Pietrilla and the hugely supportive Library team.

Debating The Year 8 Middle School Debating Competition at CGS continues to be an exciting and popular part of the curriculum. The Year 8 Middle School Debating Competition continues with the semi-finals between 8T versus 8R and 8B versus 8M in Week 7. The topic is ‘That we should ban live animal exports.’ The two winning teams will debate on Open Day in Term 4.

The Inter-School competition teams had a successful first round on Wednesday evening at CGS debating the notion that ‘Junk food should be banned from school’. All teams prepared and presented well, and we had a number of best speakers on the night.

Allwell Testing Our Year 8 Boys took part in the Allwell Testing to help gauge their academic progress in numeracy, literacy and general reasoning. The testing also helps the School to identify particular strengths and learning needs of individual students. The results will be available for boys and parents in Term 4.

Snow Sports We wish all our boys and families well who are braving the cold at the Inter-School Snow Sports at Mt Buller this week. Hopefully the intensive days skiing are followed by a warm and cosy open fire. The Middle School boys competing include: Max McKenzie, Oliver Wu, Tobias Phillips, Hugh Cran, Michael Chen, Sebastian Kamleshwaran, Justin Mellor, Flynn Parker (all Year 7), Sebastian Beck, Henry Baker, Nathan Leung, Jack Dobbyn, Alexander Nielsen and Michael Wang (all Year 8).

AGSV Athletics Trials 2 Warmer weather welcomed the Athletics squad to the second AGSV trials at Mentone on Saturday and there were a number of encouraging performances.

In the Under 13s, Noah Shinnick jumped well in the high jump (1.3m) and triple jump (8.97m) as did Matthew Hoyling (both Year 7) in the long jump (3.9m) and triple jump (8.82m). Credit should also go to Lachlan Young and Ioan Hillard (both year Year 7) who ran in the 3000m and followed this up shortly afterwards in the 800m.

Well done also to Chris Lu and Domenic Bozzone (both Year 7) who improved their 100m times by over 1 second.

In the Under 14s, Harrison Car (Year 7) again posted some impressive times in the 800m and 1500m and looks like he will be a force to be reckoned with. Ben Ford (Year 7) excelled in the field events, jumping 1.5m in the high jump and throwing 13.4m in the shot putt. Well done to Nick Dillon, Ewan Lewis and Joe Hu (all Year 7) who, while competing in other events, all had a go at the hurdles and are all improving with practice.

In the Under 15s, Ethan Aw (Year 9) and Ming Zhou (Year 8) both made their first appearances of the season and ran well in the 100m and 200m. Well done to Jack Dobbyn (Year 8) who improved his 1500m time by 14 seconds, to Thomas Kohne (Year 8) who jumped 9.77m in the triple jump and to Hayden Newman (Year 9), who looked tired after an impressive run in the 400m, 800m and 1500m.

This Saturday brings the CGS only trials at Burwood Athletics Track. With events finishing about 11.00am, it is the perfect opportunity for all athletes to get out there and stake their claim for a place in the final’s team.

Parent Education, Building Resilient Teenagers On Wednesday 14 August, parents had the wonderful opportunity to hear a presentation by Professor Michael Gordon, on Building Resilient Teenagers.

The address by this distinguished psychiatrist and past-parent of the School was remarkably informative, engaging and entertaining, offering insights as to how parents can best help their children and teenagers to develop resilience and self-confidence in order to thrive both at school and in life.

Prof Gordon’s presentation may be accessed on the Parents Portal of the Camberwell Grammar website.

Welfare Survey In the next couple of weeks we will be administering an anonymous welfare survey to help gauge the welfare of boys in the Middle School. This survey will investigate, bullying, well-being and student supports amongst other areas. Boys are reminded of their responsibilities to be an upstander, rather than a bystander, supporting those in need.

Outdoor Education Boys started their second round of Outdoor Education this afternoon, where they will spend two half-days learning new skills, prior to the full-day experience on Friday 6 September. Open Day Camberwell Grammar School Open Day is being held on Saturday, 12 October from 10.00am until 2.00pm.

On Open Day we will be offering performances, hands-on activities and displays in classrooms for students and visitors to our School. The Art Studio will also showcase students’ work. The animal farm returns for all the little ones and animal lovers. All Junior School boys, Prep to Year 5, are expected to attend for at least the duration of the activities in which they are participating. Any boys who have conflicting engagements are asked to notify Mr Howard Kelly in writing by the start of Term 4.

Spring Sport continues this weekend as we host a Camberwell only Athletics event on Saturday morning at Bill Sewart Athletics Track in Burwood. The Water Polo teams have begun the season well and are in good form as they approach the finals. The Under 15 Blue Baseball team made their grand final tomorrow and we wish them all the best. The Victorian Interschools Championships are underway at Mt Buller. We will have a summary of their results next week.

The Football, Hockey and Soccer presentation nights were held during the week. They were well attended and the guest speakers were excellent. A fantastic way to celebrate the season and recognise the team and individual efforts of our students. Thank you to the respective Friends Of groups for hosting and organising the nights.

Students have been made aware of Firsts trials and training through Schoology, as preparations for the Summer season have already started.

Sport Report The Water Polo squad had another successful round, as both Open teams were able to gain crucial wins.

The Open B team was highlighted by Charlie Amling (Year 11) who was a focal point up forward, scoring 3 goals to cruise Camberwell to a 6-2 win over Trinity. The Open A team benefited from another brilliant display

by Jasper Guthrie (Year 12) in goals and a complete team effort up forward, to keep Ivanhoe goal less in their 5-0 victory. Despite notable performances from Ben Worley and Charlie Chun (Year 9), the Intermediate Blue team were not as fortunate as they went down in a gritty 5-2 loss against Trinity. The Junior teams had two narrow but very competitive losses with Lachlan Nguyen (Year 8), Jackson Haintz (Year 7) and Ryan Humphries (Year 7) playing particularly well for their respective teams.

The Camberwell Fencing squad had their final competition last Sunday in the Schools League Teams Competition. The senior team consisting of Julian Lim (Year 7), Henry Smith (Year 11), Anderson Sulewski (Year 11) and Sean Xu (Year 9) were able to overcome some tense moments in their poules to clinch a hard-earned bronze in their age group. The CGS Enterprise team made up of Nick Barry (Year 9), Julian Lim (Year 7), Luke Nguyen (Year 9) and Sean Xu (Year 9) were able to come away with the gold in the Junior Secondary Epée Shield, taking it away from Scotch College who had held it for the last 5 years.

In favourable conditions, the CGS Athletics squad headed out to Mentone on Saturday looking to improve on their results from last week. In the Under 15s, Jack Dobbyn (Year 8) was able to improve his 1500m time by an impressive 14 seconds, whilst Thomas Kohne (Year 8) jumped a noteworthy 9.77m in the triple jump. Akalanka Gunawardana (Year 9) had a busy morning in the Under 16s as he ran 12.33s in the 100m whilst also recording some great distances in both the triple and long jump. Jimmy Smith (Year 10) and Josh Davidson (Year 9) were strong in their middle distance runs as was Connor Assauw (Year 10) who achieved a personal best 1.75m in the high jump. Tom Bowers (Year 11) again dominated in his 3000m run, finishing with a time of 9 minutes and 4 seconds and we wish him well in the Cross Country Nationals this weekend.

Sport Academy The Sport Academy is now well established and we currently have 85 students from Year 1 through to Year 11 participating in over 10 different sports. Volunteers Needed Urgently for August/September Dates The Auxiliary is urgently seeking assistance from parents who are available to volunteer 1-2 mornings per Term to assist staff in the cafeteria. We ideally like to have two parent volunteers per day. Hours are 9.30am to 1.00pm. It is a fun way to meet other parents and feel connected to the CGS community.
