community report

At Camberwell Grammar School, we are committed to offering every student the best possible education to prepare them for life beyond school. As an independent Anglican day school for boys from Pre-Preparatory to Year 12, our mission is to nurture academic excellence alongside the personal growth of each student.

Founded in 1886, our school proudly upholds a rich tradition while embracing innovation to meet the evolving needs of our students. Dedicated peers, mentors and staff support students to discover their passions and reach their potential. Our motto, Spectemur Agendo – ‘By Our Deeds May We Be Known’ – encourages our students to act with integrity and to strive to be good men who contribute meaningfully to our world.

This report is produced in accordance with the national compliance legislation and is also published on the Camberwell Grammar School website: www.cgs.vic.edu.au.

The Student Body

Student Attendance

Parents/Guardians are requested to report reasons for student absence to the School.

Teachers mark an electronic roll each period. The Administrative Officer identifies and determines the nature of any unknown absence, records the details in the School’s administrative system, and notifies class teachers of a student’s absence through subsequent class rolls. Parents are also sent a text message. Staff involved in the pastoral care of particular students liaise with parents if there are concerns regarding attendance. A summary of each student’s attendance is published to parents on their semester report, a digital copy of which is stored on the School’s systems.

Attendance data is forwarded to the Australian Government for Years 1 to 10 students biannually, during Semesters 1 and 2.

Student Outcomes

Congratulations to our Class of 2025 for their outstanding VCE results – continuing the exceptionally high results that Camberwell Grammar School students have achieved in recent years. All 188 students who completed the year satisfactorily met the requirements of the VCE, and we are very proud of them all.

The depth of the results is particularly pleasing, with our median ATAR score being 91.45, and our average ATAR score 86.48. Twenty-five of our students (13%) achieved an ATAR of 99 or better, placing them in the top one per cent of the State. In addition, 33% percent achieved a rank of 95 or better, while 52% of our students achieved a score of 90 or better. More broadly, 88% of our students gained a ranking of 70 or better, which is a terrific achievement. There were nine perfect study scores across a range of subjects.

Our Duces were Ethan Lau and Ben Ngo, who both scored the highest possible rank of 99.95. Our Proxime Accessit was Ivan Zhang, who scored 99.90. A further 22 students earned scores of 99 or better. All worked very hard at their studies, while being actively involved in the full life of the School.

Ethan, Macneil House Captain and a Cadet Under Officer, balanced his service with top honours in Chemistry and Specialist Mathematics.

Ben served as a Bridgland House Prefect and a dedicated Rotary Interact member, earning academic prizes in English Language and Chemistry. Meanwhile, Ivan led as the Environment and Sustainability Prefect while excelling in the Music Academy and achieving distinction in University Enhancement Mathematics.

While there is an early focus on the ATAR scores, these numbers are only a small measure of a student’s true value. Far more important are the resilience, deep friendships and life lessons they cultivated at school – these are the assets that will truly shape their journey ahead. Our graduating students are well-prepared to step into their chosen future, with most now studying their first-preference university courses.

I thank and commend our remarkable teaching staff, whose dedication helped our students achieve such fantastic results. Their pride in the students’ success is clear, and I am deeply proud of them in turn. We also congratulate and thank our parents for their constant support through the inevitable ups and downs of their child’s VCE year. Congratulations to the Class of 2025 on results that reflect your sustained effort and commitment.

‘While there is an early focus on the TR scores, these numbers are only a small measure of a student’s true value. Far more important are the resilience, deep friendships and life lessons they cultivated at school.’

Student Destination

Student Destination – Class of 2025

186 of the 188 Camberwell Grammar School students who successfully completed their VCE in 2025 applied to undertake tertiary study in 2026. To summarise Victorian offers, 181 students received offers in December, and an additional 38 offers were made in January and February rounds. While most students received just one offer, 19% received two or more. In terms of preferences, 78% of applicants received their first or second preferences. Three students have advised that instead of taking up their domestic offers, they will be accepting offers to study abroad, specifically at Cambridge University and University College London in the UK, and Columbia University in the USA.

The University of Melbourne and Monash University accounted for more than 70% of offers received; however, Monash continues to be the destination of choice. Seventy-three students accepted offers to study at Monash compared to Melbourne (59). RMIT University was the third most popular institution – 28 offers overall –with students drawn by the range of specialised choices. The table on the facing page compares tertiary destinations over the past three years.

Tertiary Placements 2023-2025

The following table highlights the fields of study that our 2025 cohort intends to pursue this year. Once again, Management and Commerce remains the clear favourite, with about one third of students selecting those courses, though many combine it with another area of interest. The next most popular area is Engineering, with Sciences and Society & Culture close behind. A substantial number of students chose to study Construction or property-related degrees, which increased the Architecture & Building numbers. Students are continuing to choose double degrees (43) or were successful in applying for guaranteed packages of undergraduate with post-graduate courses (18).

Fields of Study 2024-2026

Total 246 (186 students), as double degrees count in more than one field of study. Postgraduate options in different fields are also counted (e.g. Science with guaranteed post-graduate Engineering pathway are counted in both areas).

Parent, Student and Staff Surveys

In 2025, Camberwell Grammar School administered the Independent Schools Victoria (ISV) LEAD Effectiveness Surveys. This independent evaluation captured quantitative and qualitative insights from parents, students and staff on a 10-point agreement scale, providing actionable data to continuously elevate the School’s educational and cultural offerings.

Parent Satisfaction

The parent survey gathered 158 responses representing families across the Junior, Middle and Senior campuses. Parents expressed exceptionally high satisfaction with the core institutional foundations of the School. The highest-scoring indicators highlighted the School as a safe learning environment with outstanding library resources, and a high level of parent satisfaction with their decision to send their child to Camberwell Grammar School. The community-oriented culture was also strongly validated, with parents feeling welcomed and valued as part of the School community.

The feedback highlighted the value placed on academic excellence as well as the holistic approach to education. This was highlighted by the appreciation of the broad range of programs on offer at the School, particularly the music program, the diverse range of co-curricular programs and the commitment to wellbeing and community. Dedicated teaching staff were also noted by parents.

Identified areas for further growth included a desire for enhanced communication, further opportunities for expanded student participation in learning activities that engage the local community, as well as the application of learning to real-world situations. Moving forward, the School will utilise this feedback to explore service-learning and applied learning opportunities and to enhance parent-school communication channels.

‘Students expressed how much they value educators who take a personal interest in them as people.’

Student Satisfaction

Student sentiment was captured from a robust sample of 802 students across Years 5 to 11, with a pleasing 79% response rate. The data reveals that the student body views Camberwell Grammar School as a safe, highly motivating and positive environment for learning, with high ratings for both student happiness and perceived safety. Students feel strongly supported by the facilities, value their access to high-quality technology and resources, and indicate that the physical environment effectively stimulates their learning. Students expressed how much they value educators who take a personal interest in them as people.

Students also recognise the academic rigour promoted by the School, noting high teacher expectations and an active encouragement to improve their work. Student feedback suggests a continuation of expanding avenues available for student voice in learning, opportunities for additional VCE subject offerings and further community service-oriented experiences. Feedback also identified an interest in exploring the links between classroom-based learning and real-world learning, suggesting a desire to apply their knowledge to solve issues facing the broader community.

Staff Satisfaction

The staff survey yielded a representative turnout with 171 participants, balanced between 106 teaching staff and 65 general staff, which was a higher response rate than in recent years.

The resulting feedback painted a picture of a deeply proud, well-equipped and aligned workforce. Staff highly commended the technology infrastructure, resources and facilities of the School, expressing confidence in their ability to leverage these tools alongside diverse teaching strategies to support students in reaching their full potential. A powerful sense of collective pride was evident in the

feedback, driven by healthy, mutually supportive relationships between staff and students.

To build upon these excellent organisational foundations, the survey illustrated the desire for clear strategic direction and philosophy following the appointment of new leadership, and the opportunity to establish effective communication channels. Staff also signalled an appetite for more structured performance feedback mechanisms and deliberate peer collaboration opportunities to further enhance their pedagogical practices.
