Savouring the season

This year marks our fifth year of hosting Dine In Dine Out in Camberwell. Our premier food event returns as a single-day fiesta on Saturday, August 5 which will be packed with plenty of activities including laneway pop-up parks, food tastings, in-store promotions, a market family day, roving entertainment and fun for the children. The Camberwell Traders' Association is responsible for organising and running Dine In Dine Out as a way to celebrate the finest food on offer in Camberwell. Visitors can enjoy fresh market produce, full service restaurants, casual cafes and niche food stores. During the day (10am – 3pm) visit the Pop-Up Park in Evans Place, the Market Place Park, join the Camberwell Fresh Food Market for their family day and pay a visit to Aerial Walk at the junction. Let your hair down in the evening (6pm – 10pm) when Evans Place transforms into an After Dark Jazz Park, featuring a live jazz band. Drop in for a wine tasting on your way to one of Camberwell’s fine restaurants or stick around, enjoy the atmosphere and bust a move on the dance floor. Camberwell precinct will also come alive as roving entertainers amuse visitors, fun activities keep the children interested and in-store events and promotions delight shoppers on the hunt for something new. Visitors can also make the most of the day by dining at Camberwell’s restaurants and cafes or exploring specialty food stores to source ingredients for the perfect meal at home. Crisp enoki mushrooms work well in soups and salads.

'Shroom for improvement Mushrooms are a food that have been part of our lives forever, and in so many different ways. For a vegetable, mushrooms are a ridiculously popular food with meat-eaters, and have often been called ‘meat for vegetarians’ because of their protein content and their meaty texture.

Stuffed with gourmet delights; fried in butter next to a steak; tossed through an omelette – it’s no wonder the comforting sensation of sinking your teeth into a mushroom is like relaxing into your favourite pillow.

Find mushrooms in Camberwell ü ü ü ü

Aldi Coles

They are also a favourite food of those watching their cholesterol – or their waistlines – because they have practically zero fat, but are packed with natural fibre. Have you ever wondered why you feel so good after chowing down on a bowl of mushrooms? Fun food fact: collectively, the B-vitamins contained in mushrooms may help to relieve stress, depression and fatigue. There’s another reason too, of course. Mushrooms are delicious and they are versatile. So don’t limit yourself! Step away from the common white variety and con‘shroom a feast with these little beauties.

Possibly the most common mushroom, these cuties are white and button shaped, making them perfect for stuffing, and have a mild flavour that lends itself well to salads.

This variety of mushroom has a distinctive trumpet shape and a soft, velvety texture. Oyster mushrooms have a lovely nutty, peppery flavour making it a great addition to stews and casseroles.

Portobello Growing to around six inches across, these mushrooms have a big taste and plenty of texture. Their huge, umbrella-like caps are often eaten as veggie burger substitutes.

Enoki These most unmushroomy-looking mushrooms have tiny little caps and longs stems, and are often mistaken for sprouts. They are a common feature in Asian cooking, and because they are so crisp, they work well in soups and salads.

Shiitake With a distinctive smoky taste, shiitakes are best cooked in stir-fries, sauces, and casseroles. The stems are too tough to eat but can be used to flavour stocks and sauces. They are key to miso soup, and are a staple ingredient in Chinese stir-fries.

Swiss brown Similar in size and shape to the button mushroom, the Swiss brown mushroom has a strong taste and firm texture and a light brown, slightly mottled appearance. They are perfect for soups, creamy risottos, or simply tossed in butter and sprinkled with salt. // ISSUE 5 // AUG 2017

Market characters

The traders play a vital role in bringing the Camberwell Fresh Food Market to life, with most of them family-operated businesses. Here, we meet the people behind the market stalls.

Sweeties Fruit and Nuts

Little Pony Goes To Market

Market Meats

A stalwart shop, Sweeties Fruit and Nuts has called the market home for more than 16 years.

Little Pony opened their first cafe at Camberwell Junction in July 2016 and have recently expanded to offer a second cafe at the Camberwell Fresh Food Market.

For quality meat at great prices, Market Meats is the answer.

The store specialises in a variety of nuts, with 95% of them grown and sourced locally in Australia. In addition to nuts and confectionery, the shop sells all kinds of glacé fruits ideal for fruit cakes. Co-owner Neil Tzilinis took over the shop in February 2017 and comes to the business with extensive retail experience. “The market is very community orientated. We have our regulars that come in every week and I know their orders by heart. There is a lovely community feel,” he said.

Little Pony Goes To Market offers coffee and tea, as well as chai, matcha and turmeric lattes. To accompany your hot drinks, the cafe offers delicious pastries and doughnuts. But the main attraction are the scrolls, filled with delicious ingredients like Nutella and banana, cookies and cream, lamington, and classic cinnamon and icing. “Coffee and pastries are such a fantastic combination. It gives people the chance to take a break and treat themselves,” said owner Jay He.

The butcher has been part of the Camberwell Fresh Food Market for the past five years and specialises in grass-fed meat, locally-sourced beef and cuts that are ideal for ‘low and slow’ cooking. Co-owner Angelo Garretto said he focused on bringing people premium products at affordable prices. “We don’t skimp on quality. Our burgers are the best in town – we use Black Angus Beef and fresh ingredients so they are packed with flavour,” he said. The butcher also sells sausages in natural casings, lamb gyros and porchetta.

Darren of Burch & Purchese comes to Camberwell Pastry chef Darren Purchese is coming to Dymocks Camberwell to celebrate the launch of his new cookbook, Chefs Eat Toasties Too. Pick up your copy and get it signed on Saturday, August 5. Chefs Eat Toasties Too is Purchese’s ode to one of his favourite foods: the toasted sandwich. In the book, Purchese shares his unique take on everyone’s favourite breakfast, lunch or midnight snack. The book reveals 50 of Purchese’s masterful creations and caters to a host of toastie cooking methods including the grill, pan, oven and, of course, the sandwich press. He has also included some indulgent creations in the book – those with a sweet tooth can look forward to toasties that incorporate dark chocolate, olive oil and Murray River salt flakes, or a coffee-infused French toast with banana, nut crumble and yoghurt. For those wanting to take their toasties to new heights, the book offers a line-up of sides, sauces and dressings to compliment the most accomplished of toasties. Think pear and walnut chutney, dill pickles, homemade potato chips, candied orange slices, and rose raspberries. Chefs Eat Toasties Too will make you forget everything you thought you knew about the humble hot sandwich, taking the guiltiest foodie pleasure and perfecting it with pride. Book signings will take place from 11am – 11.45am on August 5 at Dymocks Camberwell, located on Level 1, The Well shopping centre, 793 Burke Rd, Camberwell.

Savouring the season Lemons Seasons change, and so should the fruits and vegetables you put on your plate. Eating seasonally means the food will taste better, it will be cheaper and it supports sustainability as the produce is likely to be sourced locally. Here are some great winter fruits and vegetables to add to your shopping basket.

This bright yellow citrus fruit is one of the most versatile foods you can have in your kitchen. Use it to make juice and salad dressings, add it to smoothies or combine it in a marinade for meat. With vitamins C, B6, A and E, lemons are full of health benefits.

Known for its deep purple colour, beetroot can be eaten raw, roasted or boiled. Grate raw beetroot into a salad, include them in your next roast dinner, or get adventurous and make a dessert. The earthy sweetness of beetroot makes them ideal for cakes and brownies.

Kiwifruit is as tasty as it is pretty. This wonderful green fruit is low in fructose and is packed with vitamin C and dietary fibre. Add some sliced kiwifruit to plain yoghurt for a healthy snack, add to a fruit salad or scoop out the flesh with a spoon and enjoy it on its own. // ISSUE 5 // AUG 2017

Silver beet

Rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, lycopene and fibre, grapefruit is a wonder fruit. It also boosts digestion and can aid in weight loss. With its bitter sweetness, grapefruit is a great addition to salads, salsas and smoothies.

Also known as chard, and packed with vitamins A and C, silver beet is a great leafy green vegetable to incorporate into your diet. Add raw silver beet leaves to salads, slice and use in a stir fry, or add to quiches and soups.

The bountiful banana – it’s the perfect ingredient in fruit salads, smoothies and juice blends, banana breads and muffins, and an incredible caramelised sweet treat when pan fried. With vitamins C and B6, folate, potassium, fibre, magnesium and niacin, bananas are full of the good stuff. Enjoy them year-round.

This brilliant, bright orange fruit is another winter citrus favourite. A good source of vitamin C, antioxidants and potassium, mandarins are great for blood pressure control and protecting against heart disease. Popular varieties of mandarins include imperial, murcott and afourer. // ISSUE 5 // AUG 2017

Winter warmers: Hot drinks to beat the chill Whether you’re snuggled up on the sofa of your favourite cafe enjoying a good book, catching up with the girls for a latte, or even taking a meeting off-site, somehow a hot mug of something always ends up on the table.

In winter, nothing warms the soul, the hands and the taste buds like a steaming hot mug of your favourite beverage.

But this winter, hot drinks just got a lot hotter, with a range of new items appearing on the drinks lists of the hippest cafes in town. And they are bright pink. Or green. And they are (mostly) good for you. Here are our choices for the hottest new hot drinks this winter. Try them all, we dare you!

01. Hot chocolate There are some days when only a hot chocolate will do. While slightly on the naughty side, hot chocolates can range in decadence – from a mug of cocoa mixed with heated milk and maybe sugar, to the Taj Mahal of hot chocolates, created from flaked chocolate, hot milk, and topped with lashings of whipped cream and, you guessed it, more chocolate.

02. Beetroot latte If Aussies can put beetroot into hamburgers, it was probably only a matter of time until we put them into lattes. Beetroot lattes are made from powdered beetroot and frothy almond milk and are the most vibrant shade of pink.

03. Chai latte This sip is for the traditional lovers of chai, and incorporates warm milk, with a blend of spices like cinnamon, cardamom and star anise, mixed together with honey.

04. Turmeric latte

Also known as golden milk, turmeric lattes are so hot right now. Although it’s been a staple in Asian cultures for centuries, turmeric is currently experiencing a burst of popularity in the West, largely due to claims it helps combat chronic inflammation conditions. While there are a range of recipes for this drink, it is commonly made with turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, a pinch of black pepper and coconut oil, and all ingredients are heated together with a plant-based milk such as almond or coconut milk.

05. Matcha latte You don’t normally expect your lattes to be bright green, but then you probably don’t expect your lattes to be packed with antioxidants either. While green teas are infused and then the leaves are discarded, matcha lattes are made with the whole tea leaf, which is ground into a fine powder. It’s mixed with frothy milk and flavoured with spices like nutmeg or cinnamon.
