HELLO. IS IT TEA YOU’RE LOOKING FOR? There’s nothing quite like starting your day off with a hot, steaming cup of tea. It’s an aromatic and rejuvenating drink, and is particularly warming in the cold winter months. Made from the leaves of the tea plant grown mainly in India, Asia, Kenya and Sri Lanka, tea boasts a number of health benefits. It can improve digestion and metabolism, and is known to reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke. Tea also protects bones and helps with losing weight.

White tea

Matcha tea

This crème de la crème tea is made from the leaves of an evergreen called Camellia sinensis. It’s a pure tea and holds most of the natural elements of the plant.

The leaves have been finely powdered which are added to a cup of hot water then whisked with a bamboo brush to produce a rich, frothy texture.

But what’s in a tea? Tea contains theophylline, bound caffeine (often called theine) and L-theanine. It’s also rich in antioxidants which stops the oxidation that causes cell damage and health problems.

Green tea

Herbal tea

With its vivid green colour and juicy sweet flavour, green tea is refreshing and has a bold flavour. Sencha is a traditional steamed Japanese green tea which has a light roast finish as well as a pine aroma.

Packed with health benefits, herbal teas are caffeine-free and often used to treat common ailments. Rooibos tea can relieve headaches, while floral varieties are great for eliminating toxins and nourishing the liver. Peppermint tea is known to soothe an upset stomach and chamomile tea is calming and used to treat insomnia, sleeping disorders and anxiety.

Tea is enjoyed worldwide and is renowned in formal settings such as afternoon tea where friends meet to enjoy the drink alongside scones, sandwiches and cream cakes. There are many different types of tea on the market. Here’s an outline of the most popular types:

Yellow tea Maybe not as well known as other teas, yellow tea is quite rare. This tea is steamed under a damp cloth which gives the leaves a slightly yellow colour and is known for its savoury, fruity and fermented aroma.

Black tea Popular varieties of black tea include English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Chai and Darjeeling. This type of tea is processed with withered leaves and rolled before being heated. It is aromatic, has a rich taste and can be sweetened with honey, chocolate, herbs or spices.

6

Oolong tea This tasty green tea can activate enzymes that cut down fat found in the blood stream. It also helps to detoxify the body and has antioxidants, aiding weight loss and improving mental alertness.

ELEMENTS OF THE PERFECT CHARCUTERIE BOARD Grab your ingredients from Camberwell to create a delicious night in. Charcuterie is a French word for any cooked, dried or cured meat. All cultures preserve meat, yet the French are notable for their methods of curing meats. A charcuterie board is a collection of meats and cheeses that are laid out for that perfect appetiser. Ideal for when you are dining in, there are no hard and fast rules concerning the layout, and you can mix it up according to your guests’ tastes. The board needs to be of sufficient size to accommodate the food, so make sure you have that covered. When building a charcuterie board, presentation is everything, so spend some time thinking about your arrangement.

Nuts and dried fruits These are great palate cleansers in between cheese and meat samplings. They also add interesting textures to the board. Choose from: ü Dried apricots

ü Cashews

ü Dried prunes

ü Pecans

ü Dried dates

ü Walnuts

ü Sun-dried tomatoes

ü Almonds

Find quality dried fruit and organic nuts at The Source Bulk Foods and the Camberwell Fresh Food Market.

Meats The main attraction of any charcuterie board, you should include a variety of cured meats. Some common choices include: Ham ü

ü Prosciutto

ü Peppered salami

ü Capicola

ü Pork and garlic sausage

ü Pancetta

Find sliced and cured meats at the Camberwell Fresh Food Market.

Fresh fruit Fresh fruit is an essential part of any charcuterie board - it adds colour and the sweetness counteracts the saltiness from the meats and cheeses. Go for: ü Sliced apple

ü Sliced pear

ü Grapes

ü Strawberries

Find fresh fruit at Evergrin Organics, the Camberwell Fresh Food Market and Coltivare.

14

DineInDineOut.com.au // ISSUE 4 // AUG 2016

Jams and preserves Jams and preserves add the sweetness needed to balance the salty and savoury flavours on the board. Cranberry or apricot jam go well with cheeses, while spiced chutneys perfectly complement smoked meats.

Find jams and preserves at Tasmanian Grocer.

Bread and crackers No charcuterie board would be complete without a selection of bread and crackers, with sliced baguette a popular choice. It is also nice to have something crunchy like rye crisps, plain crackers or breadsticks.

Find bread at Provence Artisan Bakers and crackers at Coles and Woolworths.

Pickles and olives Essential for that savoury taste, there are a variety of pickles that deserve a place on your board. Choose from plain, marinated or stuffed olives for variety. Opt for: ü Gherkins

ü Pickled onions

ü Olives

ü Pickled green beans

ü Marinated artichokes

Find pickles and olives at Nick & Sue’s Gourmet Deli and Coltivare.

Cheeses Ideally, you should have a combination of hard and soft cheeses, with mild to strong flavours. Choose from this list of favourites: ü Fresh cheese - burrata

ü Firm cheese – cheddar

ü Soft cheese – camembert and brie

ü Hard cheese - parmigiano reggiano

ü Semi-soft cheese – herbed gouda

ü Veined cheese – gorgonzola

Find quality local and imported cheese at Junction Deli in the Camberwell Fresh Food Market.

Presentation We are all drawn to beautiful things, so make your charcuterie board appealing to the eye. With the right blend of colours, you can create an eye-catching display of succulent food. Be adventurous and try different layouts. The meats and cheeses should be the central focus, with the fruits and pickles positioned around them. Mix it up with the perfect condiments and your guests will really enjoy this sweet and savoury appetiser.

Find stylish serving platters and wooden boards at Minimax, Wheel & Barrow, Bed Bath N’ Table and Provincial Home Living.

CAMBERWELL FRESH FOOD MARKET STILL AN ICON The Camberwell Fresh Food Market has been part of the shopping precinct’s identity and character for more than 85 years. Established in the 1930s, the market sells a range of quality fruit, vegetables, meat, poultry, seafood, flowers and other gourmet food. Steeped in history, the site was originally a horse carriage factory that later become a produce market and serviced the market growers of the area. An unfortunate fire damaged most of the market in 1992 and stall holders had to trade from temporary premises while the market was being repaired. In 2002, the market was renovated giving it a new look, and an entrance from the rear carpark provided better access for shoppers. The market’s history is still alive and thriving today, and many stall holders are second and third generation, family-run businesses that continue to trade in the traditional style.

Lighting, public toilets, a covered walkway and external paving have also been improved as part of upgrade works. There is now an expanded paved footpath, new street furniture and plantings to the south end of Station St, adjacent to the northern entrance to the market. This year, a canopy was erected along the façade facing Riversdale Rd and a new electrical substation was recently installed opposite the market’s northern entrance. With all the improvements, the Camberwell Fresh Food Market will continue to provide locals and visitors a vibrant atmosphere to shop for the finest selection of fresh produce. The market is located at 519-523 Riversdale Rd, Camberwell. Details: CamberwellFreshFoodMarket.com.au

Since 2013, the City of Boroondara has carried out works to revitalise the iconic market. The market underwent major renovations in late 2014 and reopened in February 2015 with a fresh look including new floor and wall finishes in some areas, signage to shops, new traders and a relocated fruit and vegetable section.

Market Family Days

Trading hours

519-523 Riversdale Rd: 7am - 5pm

Monday: Closed Tuesday: 7am - 7pm Wednesday: Closed Thursday: 7am - 7pm Friday: 7am - 7pm Saturday: 7am - 5pm Sunday: Closed

The Camberwell Fresh Food Market regularly holds ‘Family Days’ for the community to sample fine gourmet food, fresh seasonal produce and barbeque delights. It’s a way for the market’s family-operated stall owners to say thank you to local families for their support throughout the year. To coincide with Dine In Dine Out on Saturday, August 6, the market will host a Family Day. Celebrations will be bigger than ever, with plenty of entertainment on offer. There will also be hampers full of market goodies which will be given away each hour between 10am and 2pm. We invite you to not only sample the fantastic food, but to discover all that this vibrant shopping precinct has to offer. For more than 150 years the businesses along Burke Rd and across the Camberwell Junction have serviced Melbourne’s inner east. It’s the boutiques, major fashion chains, unique businesses, owner-operated franchises, department stores and antique markets that make Camberwell such an eclectic shopping precinct. The historic Art Deco Rivoli Cinemas, Camberwell Fresh Food Market and the iconic Sunday Market bring in visitors from all over, but locals love that they can also find all the professional services they need. Doctors, dentists, travel agents, beauty salons, financial advisors, optometrists, fitness centres and health professionals can all be found between Camberwell’s retail stores, cafés and restaurants. Camberwell plays host to some amazing hidden treasures. The precinct incorporates Camberwell Junction, where Riversdale Rd and Camberwell Rd intersect, as well as the smaller streets off bustling Burke Rd. A number of laneways link the streets and car parks to many of the stores, giving shoppers access from the main roads to car parks located on both the east and west sides of Camberwell. Major stores like Target, Woolworths, Dan Murphy’s, JB Hi-Fi and The Well shopping centre aren’t even on Burke Rd and some smaller stores only have frontage to the car parks, so best way to really get to know what’s on offer is to wander the streets and browse the stores. The Camberwell Traders Association was formed to promote more than 600 retail and service businesses in the precinct. The businesses got together and recognised, that to compete with the big shopping malls and continue to provide services locally, they needed to work together. Each business contributes to a marketing fund which is used to run events, advertising, clean away graffiti and put up Christmas decorations. The Association has established an impressive online presence including social media and a website, CamberwellShopping.com.au, where you can find all the news about the businesses and the local community. It’s been gratifying to have so many people register for our email newsletter, enter our monthly competitions and engage with us online. Follow the Taste Trail and you will discover more than 100 amazing places where you can treat your tastebuds. Then, tell us about your experiences along the trail for a chance to win $500 to spend in the Camberwell precinct. Enjoy the free family entertainment and take up some of the special offers. For those who love to ‘Dine In’ at home, you will find quality fresh produce and plenty of interesting takeaway meal options. There are also cafés and restaurants for every taste and budget to ‘Dine Out’. We love to say, and hope you agree, that here in the Camberwell precinct, we’ve got it all!
