A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear fellow traders and professionals, I trust you’ve all had a busy summer trading period and have started the year on a positive note.

Easter will be the next major trading season on the retail calendar, and sales are expected to spike across many sectors. Food, beverages, travel, and confectionery are typically the busiest categories for this time of year. As consumers enjoy extra leisure time, it gives traders an opportunity to make the most of extended opening hours as well as seasonal promotions and sales.

Camberwell Place has officially opened its dining precinct, with several new restaurants and eateries now on offer, as well as a wine bar. This is sure to attract more people to the precinct while adding to Camberwell’s vibrant food offering.

Safety improvement works in Mayston St have finished. The works, which installed raised thresholds to slow traffic in high pedestrian areas, were part of the VicRoads Towards Zero project.

Our recent campaign for Valentine’s Day gave entrants the chance to win a romantic date for two at Rivoli Cinemas, which included dinner and a film in Gold Class. Entrants had to tell us how they would spend Valentine’s Day in Camberwell, which encouraged them to think about the businesses in Camberwell.

The competition was well received, with a record number of entries for the Valentine’s Day campaign to date.

Our Christmas Family Day (held on December 15, 2018) was our biggest Christmas event to date, with record crowds and activities taking place. Visitors to the precinct enjoyed roving entertainers, live music, face painting, photos at our festive photo wall, rides on the antique fire truck and our annual Where’s Rudolph? competition.

The Valentine’s Day competition was supported by editorial – an online article that shared 15 fun date ideas in Camberwell as well as posters and digital advertising.

DIGITAL ACTIVITY

For Christmas, we ran our annual Where’s Rudolph? competition. It has become incredibly popular among locals and families, and we received some great feedback about the competition. The major prize winner of our 2018 competition was Su Yin (Selene) Tan, who won a $500 voucher to spend in Camberwell. There were also 10 minor prize winners who each won a $20 voucher donated by Barolo.

Digital activity remains a key low-cost marketing activity in our mix and continues to yield excellent results for the shopping precinct. Our monthly e-newsletters allow us to promote current events and shop news, while digital ads allow us to create targeted campaigns.

Our Christmas campaign was a huge success, as we carried out comprehensive advertising activity across print, radio and digital mediums. Our key messages included ‘avoid the hassle of big shopping malls’, ‘don’t risk late online orders’, ‘choose your local retailers’ and ‘over 400 stores in Camberwell’.

As a result of this activity, December 2018 was a strong month for traffic to the Camberwell Shopping

Camberwell Shopping’s digital audience continues to grow, with increased users across our website, social media platforms and email database.

The Camberwell Shopping website traffic grows steadily, and hundreds of enquires from customers are passed on via contact forms direct to traders through the site each year.

• More than 5,900 email addresses in our email database • More than 100,000 unique visitors to our websites in the past year (8,390 per month on average) • More than 6,300 followers across social media.

The health and wellness category within the shopping precinct is growing and we want to promote this to the community through our marketing.

On Saturday, May 25, the precinct will hold CamberWELL-BEING, a day that celebrates businesses that offer health and wellness products and services.

Customers are invited to register and follow the Wellness Trail. They’ll collect their branded sports bag from our event booth on the day, which will include a ‘Passport to Wellness’. They then follow the trail to discover what’s happening in the participating businesses and can get their passport stamped. This is a great way to allow customers to see what your business is all about and entice them to come back.

When customers return to the booth with a stamped passport, they can enter the Wellness Trail competition for a chance to win one of the prizes donated by our traders. This competition is exclusive to Wellness Trail participants.

HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED Contact Kerry Daly (contact details below) to tell us what you would like to do on the day or to provide gifts or products for the sports bags.

We will promote this event and post traders’ specials and offers on our dedicated CamberWELL-BEING website and Facebook events page. You can help promote the day among your members and share it via your social media channels.

HERE ARE SOME IDEAS: • Have an activity, special guest, event or demonstration at a specific time/s on the day.

We can put details into the official program.

• Offer a free session or class on the event day as a way to expose new people to your business.

• Host an open day to give people a taste of what your business offers. This is particularly effective for businesses that normally run private classes. Offer them an incentive to come again another day for a free class.

• Offer a special on health and wellness products or services during May and June to tie in with the promotional period, or exclusively on the event day.

E.g. ‘30% off’ or ‘buy one, get one free’.

• Offer free samples. This can include taste testing for food products, samples of cosmetic or health products, or vouchers to get people back into your store.

• Put on promotion staff to engage with wellness trail guests at your business or to wander the streets to invite people into your business. Our promoters will be dressed up on the day to really stand out.

This year, Easter will run from April 19 – 22 so we encourage traders to plan ahead for their Easter specials and offers. Email us your offers or promotions so we can share them for you.

We will promote The Great Camberwell Easter Hunt.

This competition invites entrants to find the golden eggs hidden on posters in shop windows around the Camberwell precinct for a chance to win a $200 shopping voucher. The more golden eggs people find, the more chances they’ll have to win and the more shops they discover across the precinct. The campaign will be supported by digital advertising activity and Stonnington/Boroondara Kids magazine.

CAMBERWELL PLACE DINING PRECINCT OPENS

Following its re-brand to Camberwell Place (formerly called The Well), the shopping centre has recently completed their next stage of renovations and opened Dining Place.

Supporting local schools and charities is great PR for your business and allows you to foster strong links with the community. The following schools are looking for donations for their fundraisers, so please contact them if you can help.

The dining area offers a range of new eateries. Among some of the new traders include Just Italy, Sushi Pier, Cone Heads, Yum Yami, Thai Tani, Rebel Donuts and St Giles Wine Bar, Cellar and Pantry.

All Dining Place traders are open into the evening, with St Giles Wine Bar open until late.

Surrey Hills Primary: Biennial fete on Saturday, March 23. All funds raised will be used to purchase STEM equipment for technology and robotics to enhance learning for children. The school requires donations for a silent auction. AUTUMN CAMPAIGN We will run a seasonal brand campaign to highlight Camberwell as a destination to enjoy the autumn season.

It will be supported by advertisements, a promotional video and editorial on the website. The shopping precinct will also be decorated with artificial autumn leaves to bring an autumnal look and feel to the area. As part of the promotion we will publish fashion articles to the website which will share trends for the autumn/winter season and highlight local stores where trending items can be purchased.

Lastly, the autumn campaign will include a competition that gives our audience the chance to win a major prize donated by a Camberwell business.
