August 25th, 2012 Greetings and welcome to our 3rd Annual Business and Culture Expo, It is my great honor to welcome you as the President of the Cambodian American Business Association (CAMBA). In the last 6 years as a volunteer in the community and going into my third year term as President of the Association, I have learned so much and this experience has made me a much more humble person. I am excited to see the improvements and work progressing in the organization and the continuous support CAMBA has received from the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Tourism, Kingdom of Cambodia, the Royal Embassy of Cambodia to the U.S. in Washington D.C., the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Local, State and National Elected Officials, businesses, professionals, organizations, friends and especially, from our community.

The association was established to promote business relations in America amongst its members and the consumer communities it serves. We are a national organization with offices in the East Coast, West Coast, and abroad in Cambodia. It is the only nationally recognized business association at the Federal, State, County, and local levels of government. CAMBA serves as the resource by which its business members can receive assistance to advance their respective companies, small or large. CAMBA also serves as a conduit in promoting commerce relations with the US and Cambodia. But the Cambodian American Business Association does more than just promote and advocate for the Cambodian American businesses. It also promotes cultural awareness in our community by organizing and supporting various events through the year.

This year the Expo will be hosted at the Mark Twain Library, deep in the heart of the Cambodian community, Long Beach, CA. The theme, “PROMOTING BUSINESS RELATIONS, AMERICA & ABROAD, “ is the undertaking of the celebration this year. Cambodian business owners are wide spread across America, and the Expo is the magnetic platform by which ties respective businesses to the communities in which they serve. The participating businesses this year will learn promotional and marketing techniques in presenting their products and services beyond the Cambodian Community, and into mainstream consumer America.

This year professional services and product promotions includes, Electronics, Travel, Business Financial Planning, Telecommunication Services, Banking, Real Estate, Insurance, Legal, Health, Jewelry, Food Products, Household Goods, Goods Movement Enterprises, and Hospitality. 2012 Community Service Excellence Award Recipient Ms. Chan Hopson

A

s a survivor of the Khmer Rouge Genocide, Chan En Hopson went through an immeasurable experience in the Killing Fields the same as a million fellow Cambodians. Arriving in Long Beach, Ca. in 1980, she fell in love with the city immediately because it reminded her of her beloved hometown in Cambodia, the beautiful Capital Phnom Penh, where the famous Mekong River flows through the city.

Even though she had only $1.00 when she arrived in Long Beach, CA in 1980, she did not allow any barrier to stop her from having a successful life. She understood and recognized multiple social and emotional issues that Cambodians encountered because emotional scars from the war are not easy to detect. That’s why they had difficult times coping with the loss of loved ones and adjusting to a new high tech world. Since the communist regime executed most of the educated people and the ones that knew how to read and write, it was a miracle that Chan survived the mass killings. Therefore, her ultimate goal is to rebuild the vulnerable Cambodian community that was fractured and destroyed by the war. During the most crucial killing period, with tears rolling from her weary eyes, Chan implored God to save her life and asked Him to take her out of the horrific Hell. She promised Him that she would devote her entire life to saving the Children and their families wherever she could. Miraculously, she believed she was granted that wish.

Living with her husband and two sons in Long Beach since 1980, she has been instrumental in empowering Cambodians, especially the youth in the Greater Long Beach area. She and her supportive husband cofounded the Khmer Parent Association in 1995 and work tirelessly with the impoverished and underachieving youth and at-risk youth by providing a Tutoring-After-School program, Positive Role Modeling, Mentoring and career guidance. She also seeks out venues where they can engage in volunteer community service and participate in the summer internship program with the City of Long Beach Youth Opportunity Center to broaden their experience and keep them away from the juvenile justice system. To expose their young minds to the real world, she taught them to do a good resume, fill out job applications, how to choose a career they like and how to dress for an interview. She invited professionals from many fields in Long Beach to conduct Mock Job interviews to motivate them to work hard so they can successfully graduate from high school. Up to the present time, her program, which is run without a budget, enriched over 1,000 youth, and the majority of them successfully graduated from college and have wonderful careers.

Besides the academic skills and soft skills, Chan teaches them about diversity, empathy, compassion and understanding in society by having all the youth hand make hundreds of Christmas cards and personally deliver them to all the patients in St.. Mary Medical Center and sing carols on Christmas eve. They did multiple car washes to raise $1,800.00 for the families of Firefighters who were killed in 911, raised almost $3,000.00 for the victims in Haiti and raised over $2,000.00 for the Tsunami victims in Japan.

Scholarship Program: From 1995-2008 she provided small amount of scholarship awards to 10 selected students only. In 2009, the Nisei Students Commemorative Fund donated $35,000.00 to award 10 students $2,000 each; 10 students $1,000 each and 10 students $500 each. In 2010, Pioneer Circuits, Inc awarded 10 students from $500 to $1,500. In 2011, Pioneer Circuits, Inc awarded 30 students from $500 to $1,500 and in 2012, Pioneer Circuits awarded another 30 students from $500 to $1,500.

To improve the quality of life and longevity in the Cambodian Community, she founded and chairs the Annual Khmer Health Forum to educate the Cambodian people on health issues such as Diabetes and its complications, Breast Cancer, STDs, Cervical Cancer & HPV, Tuberculosis, Lung Cancer & Smoking, Hepatitis B & C and Liver Cancer, Dental Health for Children, Eye care, HIV/AIDS, Heart Health, etc. She was a leading person who inspired men and women to donate hair to American Cancer Society to make wig for Cancer patients. Each Flu season, she collaborates with St.. Mary Medical Center and Long Beach Health Department to provide Flu shots and Tdap shots at no cost at Buddhist temples, Khmer Churches and in the Community. On a regular basis, she provides Free translation services to countless patients who do not speak English, so they can have better health care services. On top of all these activities, Chan gets involved with other numerous activities in the city such as the Relay for Life to raise money to fund research to cure cancer. She wants build a healthy community for all Currently she is on the Board of the Pacific Gateway Youth Council of the City of Long Beach, Board member of Community Benefit Advisory of St.. Mary’s, a member of the Youth Network Services and a member of Faith Health Resource Ambassadors.

2012 Outstanding Community Partnership Award Recipient Mr. Gary Fultheim

G

ary Fultheim’s passion for the Cambodian community stems from his family history, being victims under the Nazi Rule. At a young age he learned of the Genocide attacks by the Khmer Rouge and since has had an affinity for the Khmer people, as he can relate to the suffering and losses just as his family experienced. Although, Gary himself does not speak much Khmer, he has a true passion for Cambodia’s politics, history, and religion.

As a young boy Gary had many interested that lead to his unwavering support and the voice that he serves for the Cambodian community. His interest in Archeology, Anthropology, Ancient Civilizations and interestingly enough, fish, was the start of his helping hand in the Cambodian Community.

Since 1997, Gary has also been a long term supporter of the Cambodian People Party, this is largely in part, because they put an end of the Khmer Rouge. His strong political support and relationships have made it possible for him to help on many levels for the Cambodian people here in the US and in Cambodia. From topics of economics, commerce, trade and exchange, he has been an integral part in helping build the bridge between the US and Cambodia Governments. Along the way, he has build great friendships as well, being close personal friends with high profile officials, such as His Excellency Sok Anh, Dr. Nao Thuok, Dr. Sonam who is the Head of the Mekong River Association, for Cambodian Loas and Vietnam, along with a large circle of colleagues and politicians in Washington, DC. Gary’s true passion though, lies in Fish. There’s a saying, “Where There’s Water, There’s Fish” . . . and Gary has found the water and many many fish! Since the introduction of Tilapia 50 years ago, which at the time was a great idea, has now been a great concern to him, as the over population of Tilapia is killing other existing fish. Gary has committed himself to help in the conservation of Cambodian Fishes, especially in the Ratanakiri Province,Cambodia, where the Tilapia have brought the other native fishes to non-existence.

Most recently, Gary’s greatest accomplishment was sponsoring the head of the Mekong River Association, Dr. Sonam, to speak at a conference here in the US at the 2012 Fish Conference, this past June. Notably, he was also one of the key people that helped keep the Cambodian New Year’s Parade on Anaheim Street, as he had made a donation to the City of Long Beach to keep the Cambodian New Year Parade going on Anaheim Street from Junipero Ave. to Gundry Ave. He said he did this for the neighborhood and the people.

At the start of his early career, Gary successfully ran one of Indonesia’s largest import / export businesses between 1972 - 1987, buying more from Indonesia than the 150 other competitors during his time, in the early The community looks forward to seeing Gary’s prog1980’s. His desire is to help teach and train individuals of Cambodian descent, to manage and run the Trade Department to help market Cambodia Products here in the US. The UCC Plaza was purchase by Gary in September of 1997. Here he upholds the true traditions and preserves the ancient history of Cambodia through photography.

In the UCC building, you may see over 3,000 photos displayed , boasting more photos then the Cambodian Washington Embassy, making the UCC building one of the main Cambodian buildings in the US. Most interestingly, you will not find any photographs of Pol Pot nor members of the Khmer Rouge. UCC’s collection of photos do include archeological sites, unknown to many westerners, such as Preah Vihear, Banteay Chhmar, and Preah Khan. Part of the space is also donated to the KACC dance group to practice regularly.

SAM MEAS ISSUES A CHALLENGE AND A PROMISE Agree to Term Limits

Haverhill, MA – State Senate Candidate, Sam Meas, issued a challenge to his fellow candidates in the First Essex District today: Many executive offices across the nation are term-limited. Sadly, the U.S. Congress and own State Legislature are not governed by term limits.

If elected, Meas says he will work to change that for the benefit of the people of this district.

“I promise to term-limit myself and encourage others to do the same,” Meas said.

“If Massachusetts had a robust 2-party system, the kind of corruption, nepotism, cronyism and massive debt would not happen to the extent that has occurred in recent years.”

During over 60 years of one-party rule, the natural checks and balances built into our state’s Constitution were buried.

“I intend to repay my debt to America by being the kind of CitizenLegislator our Founders intended. I plan to serve for a few years, then return to private life, run my grocery store and finish raising my family. I do not want to become a ‘career politician’.”

Meas promised to serve no longer that four terms (8 years), and issued a challenge to all candidates in the First Essex race to make the same pledge.

When asked why he is choosing eight years as a limit on his tenure, Meas noted, “If it is good enough for the Presidency, then it is good enough for me.”

“I am well aware that this may be difficult for those who come from politically connected families and those who have already grown comfortable drawing government paychecks, benefits, and pensions. That is why it is a challenge to them.”

Meas says that this is in the best interest of the people of the district and our state as a whole. He hopes that other candidates will follow in his footsteps.

epExpo is a major event taking place in Phnom Penh, in Paris and later in Kep, as a permanent exhibition, which aims at promoting and re-creating Kep in a bounded space through an audiovisual wandering, a unique experience for Cambodian visitors.

This exhibition dedicated to Kep City, renowned as one of the most charming Cambodian Riviera location in the 1960’s, arose from an unexpected report and meets a singular challenge.

There is no place without memory and Kep is not an exception. However, it seems struck by amnesia, leaving the visitor with a strange impression. Kep has its mystery; it is a short-lived souvenir of a Cambodian Golden Age. A bright new celestial body suddenly faded, leaving a petrified reflection, which seems set into the remains of vast forsaken houses.

The vestiges of its reputation in the sixties coexist with the wooden shops of the Crab Market, famed throughout the country. What are these ruins? What happened to this place? How do the people live there today? To what extent do they think about their future, and what future do they dream of?

KEP IS UNIQUE Between hills and rice fields, beaches and salt marshes along the coast of the Gulf of Thailand the city is concentrated on a bounded space featuring the still visible scars of the recent history of Cambodia.

After French colonial rule, Independence in 1953 began and Prince Norodom Sihanouk assured Kep’s status as the “Saint-Tropez of South-East Asia”.

However, the existence of this chic seaside spot did not exceed twenty years. Cambodian people built villas influenced by the Modern architecture Movement, in which Le Corbusier was widely concerned, after the Second World War. The Vietnam War and the Khmer Rouge Regime didn’t spare city and people ep. This place has degraded over time. In a period of returned peace, in a still developing country, the city now looks to the future.
