“El día de mi funeral, me gustaría que una orquesta sinfónica tocara algo de Bach”, debieron de pensar los presentes en los entierros del prólijo músico en la ciudad sajona. Aquel rockstar del barroco, al que la fama le llegó tarde, tuvo tiempo de componer un extenso y hermoso repertorio que no hizo más que estremecer al público que le escuchaba en la tierra y le aplaudía en el cielo.

That rockstar of the Baroque had time to compose a vast repertoire that shook audiences in heaven and on earth.

el incansable músico, con paso acelerado y sin perder ni ritmo ni compás, iba por la ciudad portando una carpeta de la que siempre parecía que se fueran a precipitar al suelo las partituras que ese día debían sonar en la melómana Leipzig. Unas veces eran en la iglesia de San Nicolás, y otras en la de Santo Tomás, sede del patrimonio cultural musical más antiguo de Leipzig: el Coro de Santo Tomás, que data de 1212.

A esta ciudad de solistas callejeros y orquestas a pie de escaparate llegó en el año 1723 para desempeñar el cargo de Maestro Cantor de la iglesia de Santo Tomás. Esta labor consistía en nutrir de música las misas, bautizos, matrimonios y entierros que se celebraban por toda la urbe, así como instruir a los jóvenes estudiantes del coro. El casi centenar de niños que lo constituyen continúan honrando su obra.

Igual que Bach, por Leipzig pasaron Richard Wagner, el matrimonio de Clara y Robert Schumann, y el arqueólogo de la armonía, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Él fue quien rescató del olvido el legado musical de Bach y lo presentó en sociedad. Todos aquellos sinfónicos disfrutaron, en alguno de sus aristocráticos cafés, de la taza perfecta, descrita por el cardenal Talleyrand como un “café negro como el diablo, caliente como el infierno, puro como un ángel y dulce como el amor”.

Mítico fue el Zimmermannsche Kaffehaus, al que Bach acudía dos veces por semana y donde se interpretaron sus primeras cantatas profanas y obras instrumentales para el Collegium Musicum (sociedades privadas creadas por jóvenes músicos universitarios).

Sin embargo, antes se sirvió el primer café en el Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum, allá por 1694. El bajorrelieve de la entrada presenta la figura de un turco ofreciendo un café a un querubín: simbólica manera de representar el encuentro entre Occidente y el Oriente.

walking a rapid yet rhythmic pace, the tireless musician would criss-cross Leipzig carrying the sheet music for the day’s services, which always seemed about to rain down on the cobblestones. Sometimes he was on his way to the church of St. Nicholas, which, much later, would host a series of peaceful demonstrations against the German Democratic Republic’s socialist government. Other times, he was en route to the Romanesque-Gothic church of St. Thomas, where Martin Luther announced his reforms in 1539 and where Bach himself provided the devotional music for the worship. It’s also home to Leipzig’s oldest musical heritage: the St. Thomas Choir, dating back to 1212.

Bach arrived in this city of street soloists and chamber orchestras by chance in 1723 to take on the office of Songmaster at St. Thomas Church. This enormous task consisted of nurturing the sacred music of the Masses, baptisms, marriages and burials held throughout the city, as well as leading the youth choir. The choir’s nearly 100 sailor-suited children still honor his work.

Along with Bach, Leipzig also hosted Richard Wagner; Clara and Robert Schumann and that archaeologist of harmony, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. He was the one who rescued Bach’s musical legacy from oblivion and presented it to society. In one of the city’s many beautiful cafes, all these symphonists enjoyed sipping what Cardinal Talleyrand called “coffee as black as the devil, hot as hell, pure as an angel and sweet as love.”

The legendary Zimmermannsche Kaffehaus is where Bach came twice a week and where his first secular cantatas and instrumental works for the Collegium Musicum (private societies created by young university musicians) were performed. However, the first coffee was served even earlier, at the famous Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum back in 1694. The bas-relief entryway depicts the figure of a Turk offering a cup of coffee to a cherub—a symbolic and curious way to represent the encounter between the Christian West and the Islamic East.

En esta ciudad, donde es más sencillo armar un cuarteto de cuerda que un equipo de fútbol, la música hace parte de su idiosincrasia. La Opernhaus, ubicada en la Plaza Augustus, es uno de los grandes escenarios de teatro musical burgués, por detrás de la de Milán y Hamburgo. Music is part of the idiosyncrasy in this city, where it’s easier to put together a string quartet than a soccer team.

The Opernhaus, located in the Augustusplatz, is one of the great bourgeois musical theaters, after Milan and Hamburg. In addition to being the home of the Leipzig Ballet, the institution also houses the Gewandhaus symphony orchestra, which in 1833 performed the first pieces of Leipzig native Richard Wagner. As with any worthwhile concert, the encores are not to be missed, and on the Leipzig stage these include the GRASSI Museum of musical instruments, whose 5,000-piece collection features the oldest known clavicord (1543) and harpsichord (1726); the Schumann home and the world’s only Mendelssohn museum.

Like notes on a staff, you can plot Leipzig’s tributes to Bach on a city map, marking the path of a melodic journey. Do is the charming Museum and Archives in the luxurious Renaissance house owned by the Bose family, which made its fortune in gold and silver. It’s located on St. Thomas Square and contains all kinds of objects: instruments, documents, scores and other oddities belonging to Bach. Re is a bronze sculpture of the composer, erected in the square he crossed so many times on his way to St. Thomas Church.

Mi would be the Old Bach Monument, installed in 1843 and the oldest monument built in his honor.

Bachfest, un festival anual que a través de sus diferentes actos –conciertos, conferencias, exposiciones y recorridos por la ciudad–, rinde pleitesía a uno de los pocos que conoce los secretos de la armonía. La is the old St. John cemetery where Bach was originally interred, until his coffin was identified and moved to a crypt in the church in 1894. Ti is the St. Nicholas Church school, where he also served as musical director.

Johann Sebastian Bach, despite seeing several of his children from two marriages die prematurely, managed to escape self-destruction. He was a master of composition and created works that combined beauty and perfection in a way that stirs the soul.

There was no other way to construct his world—a world of harmony, where one can imagine him on his feet, conducting an orchestra, or making an instrument sing.
