welcome Welcome to our summer/ autumn 2015 season. As we approach the 80th anniversary of our opening I often wonder what our founder, John Maynard Keynes, would make of what we have achieved.

Our summer season is a showcase for the very best that the performing arts can offer: from David Suchet to Donizetti, Room on the Broom to An Inspector Calls, we are proud to present a programme that offers something thrilling for everyone. Our building is in better shape than it has ever been, though we still face enormous challenges to keep the Theatre working. Shoehorned into the centre of a residential and commercial block, spread over eight floors and welcoming around 150,000 customers each year, simply staying open is a major achievement. We have built an audience that is amongst the most loyal in the country and that is regarded as a real arbiter of the quality and likely future life of a production. Keynes would be proud of his creation and delighted by how much pleasure it continues to bring to Cambridgeshire residents.

Over recent months we have had to think very carefully about how we can continue with the work we do as an independent theatrical charity. We are committed to providing subsidised schools’ tickets, workshops, pre and post show discussions and industry-leading special needs provisions that complement and enhance our world-class and inclusive programme. For the first time in our history we face the coming year without any public subsidy; costs from rent to repairs continue their inexorable rise and we are determined to hold down our ticket prices as much as we can. We are not a commercial theatre and don’t want to have to behave like one.

It is therefore essential that over the coming years we continue to increase our income from sources other than direct ticket sales. We will be making much greater efforts

to persuade our customers to buy a drink or programme, introducing a tempting food offer and trying to make the maximum possible use of all our spaces. We will be increasing our fundraising efforts to try to obtain funds from supportive individuals, trusts and companies.

As part of this drive, sadly, we have had to increase our booking fees by 50p per ticket from the 30th March 2015. We realise that booking fees are seen by some as synonymous with sharp practice and hidden charges; it is, however, now a common and transparent practice across cultural charities as an effective way of raising vital additional funds. If we had to raise the extra 50p per ticket through headline ticket prices, after accounting for the production companies share, royalties, VAT and credit card commissions, we would need to raise ticket prices by an average of £2.50 per ticket.

I do hope you can all find something in this programme that will remind you just why we have been able to survive for 80 years and equally why it is important that we all work together to make sure that we will be here for future generations of Cambridgeshire residents.

THE ABSENCE OF WAR 28 April – 2 May David Hare’s funny, stinging political drama is strikingly relevant, especially in the build up to the 2015 General Election. BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS 23 – 27 June

This moving and thought-provoking adaptation of John Boyne’s best-selling production shows the audience the devastating realities of concentration camps during World War II through the innocent eyes of the eight year old protagonist, Bruno. Panto Wheels Panto Wheels is a scheme, set up by Cambridge Arts Theatre, to help children from culturally and socially deprived areas attend the Christmas pantomime by subsidising the cost of travel and tickets, which can prove prohibitive.

For many this is their first experience of theatre and, as pantomime is bright, engaging and fun, it gives a solid foundation for children to develop a relationship with the arts.

Engagement with the arts can help children improve their core foundation skills by building confidence and widening perspectives. Many schools also use the pantomime story to inform teaching and learning across the curriculum, helping children encounter subjects, such as Science and Mathematics, in exciting contexts.

In our 2014/15 pantomime season the Panto Wheels project helped 2500 children from 14 schools come and experience the magic of Aladdin.

BOOKING FEE

From 30 March 2015, all tickets for the Arts Theatre carry a £3 booking fee in addition to the published prices. The booking fee is essential direct income for the Theatre.

Because ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices would not necessarily benefit the Theatre. By adding a booking fee we can ensure that every penny goes directly to the Theatre to help us protect its growth and longevity.

REFUNDS & EXCHANGES

Tickets are not refundable unless a performance is cancelled. Exchanges and resales may be made under certain conditions; please contact the Box Office for details of our policy.

DISCOUNTS

Discounts for customers with disabilities apply to most performances. We also offer discounts on certain performances for over 65’s, groups and schools. Please note there are no discounts on the lowest price seats. Only one discount applies and all discounts are subject to availability.

We now have three brand-new bars on the ground, first and second floors of the building. Our Maynard Bar on the second floor has great coffee and wine, comfortable seats and views of the city.

We are open 45 minutes before every performance, offering the perfect place to relax, have a drink and meet friends before the show.

The Arts Theatre aims to care for every patron as an individual, on a one to one basis.

There are parking spaces for customers with disabilities in 4 locations near the Theatre: 4 on Peas Hill; 2 in Wheeler Street; 7 in King’s Parade and 36 in Grand Arcade car park. If you have mobility requirements, please advise the Box Office when booking tickets so we are able to allocate you the correct space. Mobility scooters cannot be accommodated inside the building. We have four house wheelchairs available for use during all performances.

We have a Sennheiser infra-red hearing enhancement system, designed to help DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING patrons both without hearing aids, and for those who have hearing aids with a ‘T’ setting. We are also able to provide headsets and personal induction loops. If you have never used one before, we recommend arriving at the Theatre early so that our Front of House staff can explain how they work.

Some of our performances are BSL INTERPRETED. The British Sign Language interpreter will stand to the right of the stage, where they will interpret dialogue, as it is spoken. We also programme CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES; words will appear, as they are spoken or whenever a sound is made, on a screen positioned above or to the side of the stage.

For patrons who are BLIND OR VISUALLY-IMPAIRED, we can provide large print cast lists on request. Guide dogs are welcome in the auditorium, please inform Box Office at time of booking, so that they can allocate the relevant ticket. We programme a number of AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES throughout the year; the describer will explain what is happening, visually, on stage throughout the performance and this is relayed through a headset. A pre-show touch tour of the set is often available.

We also offer RELAXED PERFORMANCES, specifically designed to welcome people with an autism spectrum condition, learning disability and sensory or communication disorders, and families with very young children.
