welcome Welcome to our spring/summer 2013 season. Even after nearly ten years and thirty seasons the novelty of preparing each one for our Theatre has never worn off. By the time we reach brochure stage, and my indecision has finally got too much for our marketing team, I often feel like I am sending my first-born child off into the world. Have we got a good mix of classic drama, new writing, great comedy, opera and dance? Have we got the right balance between subsidised and commercial theatre? Will it sell well and will it give our patrons some truly memorable experiences? So here it is: the best we can do and I suspect it is one of the best programmes in regional theatre. I hope you agree.

From the whimsy and nostalgia of Steptoe and Son to the laugh-out-loud moments of Noises Off and the truly impressive Lenny Henry in Fences, alongside the pure terror of The Woman in Black and the cringe worthy, but vaguely familiar drinks gathering in Mike Leigh’s classic Abigail’s Party, we truly have an embarrassment of theatrical riches. As if that wasn’t enough, you can experience the joy of Mozart’s masterpiece Così fan tutte or the sheer physicality of the BalletBoyz, while our younger patrons will delight in the genius of Phillip Pullman’s gem I Was a Rat and the classic bedtime story of The Gruffalo’s Child. I hope we have given you everything you could ever want, and more, from your Theatre.

As I write, I can hear the strains of the James Bond theme blasting up from our rehearsal rooms as the panto company make their final preparations for this years show. Has Dame Trott turned into a villain? Will Jack get some help from Bond? Come along to Jack and the Beanstalk to find out, and join in the fun. Christmas in Cambridge wouldn’t feel right without a trip to the best traditional panto in the region.

Michael Portillo Politician, social commentator and TV documentary maker Michael Portillo will be talking about his illustrious career as a part of the ‘For One Night Only’ series.

Portillo, a former MP for Kensington and Chelsea, has had a memorable career which ended in a dramatic election defeat at Enfield Southgate in 1997 after holding the seat for 13 years.

Sir Max Hastings, veteran author, journalist, historian and broadcaster comes to the Arts Theatre for one night only to talk about his long and distinguished career. The Marlowe Society return with Shakespeare’s most delightfully mischievous of farces, The Comedy Of Errors. A case of dual mistaken identity that confounds and amuses at every hilarious turn, this is a young Shakespeare at his most humourous, resonant with the themes of loss, family and identity that will shape his future work.

When Antipholus and his manservant, Dromio, arrive in Ephesus, little do they know that their estranged twins – also Antipholus and Dromio – live in the city. With not one, but two sets of identical twins unwittingly wreaking havoc on the streets, the stage is set for a series of spousal mishaps, mistaken identities and hilarious errors that give the play its title.

The Marlowe Society have an established reputation in Cambridge for their fresh and inventive approach to interpeting Shakespeare’s plays. Its alumni include Sir Ian McKellen, Sir Derek Jacobi, Tilda Swinton and Sam Mendes.

The Richard Alston Dance Company return to Cambridge Arts Theatre with a programme of three pieces all accompanied by live music.

Unfinished Business is danced to the beautiful, lucid and flowing music of Mozart – the two movements of an unfinished piano sonata, Opus K533. To these, Alston has added an extraordinary arrangement of Mozart’s brilliant Gigue in D by the Italian virtuoso Federico Busoni, creating a third movement and bringing things to a rousing close.

Lachrymae, set to the compassionate and tender music of Benjamin Britten, for viola and piano, spins emotional variations on a gentle song by John Dowland – quietly but deeply moving.

Richard Alston has revived his effervescent The Devil In The Detail, inspired by the music of ‘King of Ragtime’ Scott Joplin. Irresistible classics such as ‘Maple Leaf Rag’ and ‘The Entertainer’ are blended with the lightness and finesse of Alston’s choreography.

Alternatively, we would be happy to book a taxi to take you home; please ask a member of the Front of House team on your arrival.

Access in the theatre Both entrances have level access and doors which can be opened by a push button placed at a suitable height for wheelchair users. There is a lift to all floors and accessible toilets on each level.

We have eight spaces reserved for wheelchair users in the stalls. Please let us know what type of wheelchair you have when you book your seats, this will enable us to allocate the correct space.

Cambridge Arts Theatre also has two house wheelchairs.

Deaf and HARD OF HEARING customers The auditorium has a Seinheiser infra-red hearing enhancement system. The Box Office will advise you on which seating area suits your specific needs. A limited number of headsets are available from the Front of House sellers, they are easy to use, but please arrive a few minutes early if you haven’t used them before.
