Editorial / Editorial Emprendimiento, una alternativa para poder alcanzar la Independencia Económica La dinámica economía mundial propicia a que se busquen alternativas que permitan el fortalecimiento de cada país, sus industrias y por ende las empresas. Una de las alternativas en medio de constantes crisis económicas es el emprendimiento, debido a que genera empleo en forma rápida y efectiva.

Emprender por necesidad implica aventurarse de forma apresurada sin saber si la idea de negocio tiene potencial de mercado para generar ingresos, muchos lo hacen porque han perdido su trabajo, se encuentran frustrados en su ámbito laboral o buscan ingresos adicionales.

Emprender por oportunidad, significa identificar ideas de negocio con potencial de crecimiento y proponer soluciones innovadoras. Se requiere mucha valentía, preparación y disciplina para alinear las estrategias y poder materializar negocios.

Canadá cuenta con el programa “Start-up Visa” cuyo objetivo es que los nuevos inmigrantes presenten sus proyectos a inversionistas canadienses, si son admitidos y los inversores deciden apostar por el inmigrante, puede eventualmente calificar para obtener una visa permanente y poder llevar a su familia a Canadá.

Se necesita trabajar más en conjunto con el sector privado si queremos ver un Ecuador con emprendimientos de calidad, pensar desde el inicio en tener un acceso a nuevos mercados con capacidad de capitalización, pero sobre todo, orientadas a un mercado exterior.

Entrepreneurship, an alternative to achieve Economic Independece The dynamic world economy is condusive to seek alternatives to strengthen each country, its industries and companies. One alternative in the middle of constant economic crisis is entrepreneurship, because it generates jobs quickly and effectively.

Starting up a business by necessity involves venturing quickly without knowing whether the business idea has a potential market to generate income. Many do so because they have lost their jobs; they are frustrated in their workplace or seek additional revenue.

Starting up a business by opportunity means identifying business ideas with potential growth and proposing innovative solutions. Great courage, preparation and discipline is required to align business strategies to materialize.

Canada has the “Start-up Visa” program whose objective is that new immigrants submit their projects to Canadian investors. If they are admitted and investors decide to invest in the immigrant they may eventually qualify for a permanent visa and take their family to Canada.

More work is needed in conjunction with the private sector if we want to see an Ecuador with quality enterprises. We must think from the beginning to have access to new markets with capitalization capacity, but above all, oriented to a foreign market.

Canadá, como muchos otros países de América Latina, no tiene una población significativa para dar a los Startups el mercado global que necesitan. Miryam Lazarte, Organizadora de la conferencia / Conference Organizer LatAm Startups Conference 2015 Canada as many other countries in Latin America, doesn’t have a significant population to give their startups the global market they need. For Canada it is important to get the right partners allowing startups to scale their projects. This is also a reality for Latin America. We have 21 economies where we can scale projects in the region, but the market for innovation and technology is actually in North America and Europe. The big dream for many startups is Silicon Valley, where a startup may be successful if it gets there with a disruptive project. Canada offers the same level regarding technology but with some additional support; a good environment for startups, enough incubators and accelerators in the market giving high quality services, and also a good number of investors. Canada offers as well the Startup Visa, a competitive program with respect to other international markets; a soft landing alternative for startups.

We’re looking for startups to stay in our region and to stop the brain drain, We’d like to have a transmission of knowledge that allow our startups to go global with a local company. Emprendimiento e Innovación en Ecuador Estamos en uno de los momentos claves para que Ecuador pueda convertirse en uno de los países más emprendedores e innovadores de la región. El mayor desafío para el país está en transformar su matriz productiva, para poder depender menos de recursos naturales no renovables y centrarse más en productos con alto valor agregado y contenido innovador.

Dentro de este contexto nace la Alianza para el Emprendimiento e Innovación (AEI), con el objetivo de establecer sinergias mediante el trabajo articulado, armónico y coordinado de los actores del “ecosistema de emprendimiento e innovación”.

En el año 2013, la estrategia “Ecuador, un país emprendedor e innovador en el 2020” que trabaja bajo un proceso estructurado, en el cual más de 300 actores del sector público, privado, académico y la sociedad civil aportaron con su experiencia, conocimiento y compromiso, y los organismos de cooperación internacional, como la CAF - Banco de Desarrollo de América Latina y la UNCTAD - Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Comercio y el Desarrollo, contribuyeron con casos de éxito, buenas prácticas y apoyo metodológico.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Ecuador Ecuador is at a key moment to become one of the most entrepreneurial and innovative countries in the region. The biggest challenge for the country is transforming its productive matrix to reduce dependence on non-renewable natural resources and focus more on products with high added value and innovative content.

Within this context, arises the Alliance for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (AEI), with the aim of establishing synergies through the articulate, harmonious and coordinated work of the actors of “the ecosystem of entrepreneurship and innovation”.

“Mi trayectoria en el Ecuador inició en el año 1998, gracias a mis estudios de biología marina empecé a trabajar como voluntaria en un grupo ecológico y posteriormente me vinculé en temas ambientales en el sector privado, trabajé en la Fundación Malecón 2000 y en la Isla Santay.

Siempre tuve la inquietud de lograr cambios y me interesé en encontrar la forma de ayudar a la comunidad desde la gestión ambiental, desde ahí surgió la idea de trabajar en proyectos del sector privado, donde pudiera generar cambios desde las empresas”.

“My career in Ecuador began in 1998. Thanks to my studies in marine biology, I started working as a volunteer with an ecological group and then linked into environmental issues in the private sector. I worked on the Malecon 2000 Foundation and Santay Island. I always had the concern to achieve change and was interested in finding ways to help the community from an environmental perspective, to make the changes at the environmental level, and it is from there where the idea of working in private sector projects came from. This could generate changes directly from the private companies”.

¿Cuáles son los principios básicos para una correcta gestión ambiental?

El principio fundamental de Ecoeficiencia es el de producir más consumiendo menos, hay que darle valor a la gestión ambiental como eje estratégico del negocio. Todo lo que se adquiere para que la compañía produzca y funcione debe de salir en producto o desecho, la gestión ambiental va a ser eficiente cuando se obtenga más productos y se obtenga menos desecho. Además hay que ser coherente con lo que se piensa, se hace y lo que se produce, de esta manera toda la gestión va a ir por buen camino.

¿Cuál es la importancia que tiene la gestión ambiental en la economía de las empresas? ¿De qué manera surgió la idea de crear Ecoeficiencia?

En el año 2006 conocí a la Ingeniera Ambiental Sandra Chacón quien es mi actual socia, y gracias al interés mutuo por trabajar en el sector ambiental decidimos montar la empresa Ecoeficiencia.

Al principio no fue fácil, pero poco a poco más gente se fue contagiando de la filosofía de generar cambios, lograr cosas distintas y bien hechas. Ahora con 7 años de experiencia siempre tratamos de ser coherentes con los pensamientos sobre el ambiente y la conservación desde nuestros colaboradores hasta los clientes y la sociedad.

Es un tema de costo – beneficio, se debe analizar que al manejar eficientemente los recursos se puede ahorrar en varios sectores de la empresa. Para la producción de un producto se paga la materia prima y al final se obtienen desechos y se vuelve a pagar para que se los lleven.

En la medida que somos conscientes van disminuyendo los costos, de esta manera al final del año la empresa se ha ahorrado un porcentaje considerable.

¿Cuáles son los servicios que ofrece Ecoeficiencia?

¿Qué tipo de proyectos debería de implementarse en una empresa para que mejore su funcionamiento y produzca menos impacto al ambiente?

Ecoeficiencia ofrece estudios de impacto ambiental, auditorías ambientales, proyectos relacionados con la responsabilidad social y ambiental, consultorías de regulación, planes de manejo, y tenemos otros proyectos que faltan desarrollarse en el país como estrategias corporativas desde el punto de vista ambiental.

Las empresas dependen de los recursos de la naturaleza para poder operar, y a veces no son conscientes de que todo lo que compran o consumen sale en forma de producto o desecho.

Piensan que los proyectos ambientales son caros, que hay que cambiar la tecnología, etc., y no es así, a veces es cuestión de

cuidar el agua y reducir el consumo de energía. Es cuestión de hacer un balance de lo que se está haciendo y tener claro que dependemos del ambiente, el fin de una consultoría ambiental es que las empresas se vuelvan eficientes y produzcan más por menos.

¿De qué trata la iniciativa “Alianza para el Medio Ambiente”? `Esta iniciativa es un enlace entre comunidades, empresarios y personas que quieren apoyar una estrategia. Es un proyecto entre amigos en el cual se identifican personas que tienen necesidades, de esta manera empiezan a darse alianzas estratégicas y surgen proyectos para poder obtener objetivos.

¿Ecoeficiencia posee algún proyecto que esté relacionado con emprendimiento verde?

Ecoeficiencia siempre apoya y fomenta todas las iniciativas que buscan una visión emprendedora, mediante la investigación de proyectos y mercado, para clientes que buscan crear nuevos productos en beneficio del ambiente.

¿En qué tipo de proyectos ambientales se encuentran trabajando en este momento?

Estamos investigando sobre proyectos de gestión de manejo de desechos y reciclaje, también brindamos consultorías y capacitaciones sobre todo tipo de temas ambientales. Adicionalmente hemos tratado temas de permisos legales a través de talleres.

Company of consulting and environmental management How the idea of creating Ecoeficiencia emerged?

In 2006, I met Sandra Chacon an Environmental Engineer who is my current business partner. Thanks to the mutual interest in working in the environmental sector, we decided to form Ecoeficiencia. At first it was not easy, but our philosophy of making a difference, achieving different things and well done gradually spread to more people. Now with seven years of experience, we are always trying to be consistent with our thoughts about the environment and conservation, starting from the office employees to the customers and society.

What kind of project should be implement in a company to improve its performance and impact less the environment?

Companies depend on nature’s resources to operate and sometimes they are not aware that everything they buy or consume comes out as a product or waste.

They often think that environmental projects are expensive, that they need to change technology, etc., and that is not the case; sometimes it is just to conserve the water and reduce energy consumption. It’s a matter of taking stock of what we are doing and be clear that we depend on the environment for it. Finally a consultant helps companies become efficient, producing more with less.

What is the “Partnership for the Environment” initiative about?

This initiative is a link between communities, entrepreneurs and people who want to support a strategy. It is a project between friends where people with needs are identified. In this way, strategic alliances begin and projects start up to achieve the objectives.

Does Ecoeficiencia have a project related to green entrepreneurship?

Ecoeficiencia always supports initiatives that promote an entrepreneurial vision, projects and market research for clients looking to create new products to benefit the environment.

What kind of environmental projects are you working on at this moment?

What are the services offered by Ecoeficiencia?

Ecoeficiencia offers environmental impact studies, environmental audits, projects related to social and environmental responsibility, regulatory consulting, management plans, and we have other projects that need development in the country such as corporate strategies from the environmental point of view.

What are the basic principles for proper environmental management?

The fundamental principle of Ecoeficiencia is to produce more while consuming less; we must also give value to environmental management as a strategic business hub. Everything you buy for the company, becomes a product or waste, and to the extent that more product and less waste is obtained, environmental management will be more efficient. We also have to be consistent with what we think, do and what is produced, so all management will be on track.

What’s the importance of environmental management in a business economy?

It is a matter of cost-benefit analysis that manages resources efficiently that can save in various sectors of the company. Raw materials are required for the production of any product and end waste is obtained, which has a disposal cost.

If we are aware of those costs and willing to decrease them then at the end of the year a considerable percentage will be saved.

We are working on research projects regarding waste management and recycling. We also provide consulting and training on all types of environmental issues; additionally we have exposed further legal permit issues through workshops.

Sin embargo, el problema para muchos estudiantes es que ellos no se dan cuenta de la verdadera magnitud de sus oportunidades educativas más allá de simplemente asistir a clases con la intención de obtener su número de créditos requeridos para graduarse lo más pronto posible.

La triste realidad para muchos recién graduados canadienses es que las oportunidades no pueden simplemente esperar a la finalización de sus estudios postsecundarios; jovenes desempleados y subempleados entre los recientes graduados presenta un verdadero desafío para los jovenes canadienses buscadores de empleo. Por suerte, los programas gubernamentales y postsecundaria patrocinado como Futurpreneur y ncTakeoff en mi propia Niagara College proporcionan recursos disponibles y valiosos.

Hablando sobre Futurpreneur, el primer ministro Stephen Harper expresó que su gobierno “recognizes that most private sector jobs are created by small businesses and entrepreneurs. We are committed to help young entrepreneurs grow their ideas and develop their skills in profitable businesses that create jobs and prosperity throughout the country.”

La importancia de fomentar el crecimiento de las pequeñas y medianas empresas se vuelve más clara teniendo en cuenta las incertidumbres económicas mostradas en los despidos recientes entre algunas de las mayores empresas de banca, energía y tecnología de Canadá.

Por lo tanto, le corresponde a los estudiantes de post-secundaria para tomar ventaja de programas de emprendimiento que se ofrecen a ellos. Los canadienses ya no están en condiciones de confiar en nuestros gigantes corporativos que nos lleve a la prosperidad económica en el nuevo sistema financiero mundial.

The unfortunate reality for many recent Canadian graduates is that opportunities cannot simply be expected upon the completion of their post-secondary studies; youth unemployment and underemployment among recent graduates presents a real challenge for young and educated Canadian job-seekers. Luckily, government and post-secondary sponsored programs such as Futurpreneur and ncTakeoff at my own Niagara College provide available and valuable resources.

Speaking about Futurpreneur, Prime Minister Stephen Harper expressed that his government “recognizes that the majority of private sector jobs are created by small businesses and entrepreneurs. We are committed to helping young entrepreneurs grow their ideas and build their skills into profitable enterprises that create jobs and prosperity across the country.”

The importance of fostering growth in small and medium sized businesses becomes clearer considering the looming economic uncertainties displayed in recent layoffs among some of Canada’s largest banking, energy, and tech firms.

Therefore, it is up to post-secondary students to take advantage of entrepreneurship programs that are being offered to them.

Canadians are no longer in a position to rely on our corporate giants to lead us to economic prosperity in the new world financial system.

Canada has many entrepreneurship centres, business incubators and accelerators, which provide expertise services for potential or existing entrepreneurs to have access into an advance entrepreneurship experience by developing or improving business plans and proposals, networking, financing channels, developing new and innovative technologies.
