A Message from the Head Master

not the realist hero, but the inspirational one. The hero who reminds us that courage, integrity, compassion, sacrifice, and perseverance are still ideals worth pursuing. The hero that reminds us not only who we are, but who we might become: an idealized version of our own humanity that, while never fully attained, is always worth pursuing. No shortcuts, no easy path forward, no reward without sacrifice, no truth without honesty.

For all of these reasons, I reminded our graduates that the heroes we choose matter. Do they simply give us permission to embrace our flaws, or do they inspire us to overcome them?

This has always been one of the quiet responsibilities of a school.

Beyond the lessons, grades, performances, and championships, education is ultimately about helping young people discover who they hope to become. The values we celebrate matter. The stories we tell matter. The adults we place before them—on TV, in the news, and in the classroom—matter.

I

n my position, I have the pleasure of working with children from the time they are ten weeks old in Kiddie Calvert to when they leave us at 14 years old—a stretch that sees perhaps the most developmental change they will experience in their lifetimes. It is a privilege, and I am often left wondering if they teach me more than I teach them.

In recent years, I have become increasingly aware that it is not an easy time to be young. Every day, our children are surrounded by messages telling them who they should be, what they should look like, what they should accomplish, and how they should measure their worth. They face an endless parade of celebrities, influencers, athletes, and public figures who are competing for their attention, their admiration, and their dollars.

In the midst of this noise, I found myself reflecting on the concept of heroes in my graduation address to the Class of 2026.

Like many others, I can trace my earliest heroes back to movie screens, television sets, and the pages of history books—where those heroes were brave, talented, and capable of accomplishing the impossible.

Today's heroes often look a little different. They are flawed, and they wrestle more with their inner demons than the external world. Maybe there is something reassuring about that. These modern heroes remind us that not one of us is perfect, and sometimes they show us a way around our imperfections. They make greatness feel attainable because they are just like us.

But I believe there is still room for another kind of hero—

For more than 125 years, Calvert has placed these examples before its students, challenging them to pursue excellence not because perfection is possible, but because striving toward something higher gives purpose to the journey. We want them to become thoughtful scholars, confident leaders, and compassionate friends whose character is measured not just by their achievements, but by how they achieve them—to demonstrate the attributes of a hero in hopes that they might become one.

With another school year behind us, I am grateful for a community that continues to believe in those heroic ideals. To our faculty and staff, parents, grandparents, trustees, alumni, and friends, thank you for helping to create a place where children are raised not just to admire heroes, but to become them.

A

s I reflect on the past year at Calvert, I am filled with both pride and gratitude. It has been another record-breaking year for the School, marked by strong enrollment, a thriving endowment, exceptional faculty retention, and stellar high-school placement.

These are indicators of a healthy and vibrant institution, and they speak to the enduring strength of the Calvert experience.

At the same time, it is important to underscore that this success does not exist independently of philanthropic support—it is made possible because of it. The opportunities our students enjoy, the excellence of our faculty, and the strength of our programs are all directly tied to the generosity of our community. Continued investment in Calvert ensures that we not only sustain this momentum but build upon it for generations to come.

June 2026 marked the conclusion of my tenure as Chair of the Board of Trustees, and it has been a privilege to give back to a community that has given my family so much. My family’s Calvert journey began more than 20 years ago, and the School has played an immeasurable role in shaping my children’s lives. Today, like so many of their young alumni peers, they are thriving and grounded in the confidence, curiosity, and character that define a Calvert education.

I am pleased to share that the Board has selected Dyson Dryden ’88 to succeed me in this role. Dyson is a dedicated alumnus and Calvert parent whose deep commitment to the School, combined with his thoughtful leadership, will serve Calvert exceptionally well in the years ahead.

I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to two fellow trustees who concluded their service this year, Kevin Carnell and David Powell ’87. Their contributions have been significant,

MOVING FORWARD This speech was delivered on June 4, 2026, by John C. Pokorny at Calvert’s Class of 2026 graduation ceremony.

G

ood morning faculty, staff, families, and students. I am honored to deliver my Eighth Grade Reflection to you as

a member of the Calvert School Class of 2026.

Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” With all due respect to the nation’s 32nd president, I would beg to differ. There are lots of things to fear, including spiders, heights, clowns, sharks, and speaking at large public gatherings, but my biggest fear has always been the fear of trying new things. So, when my dad told me he was 8

going to put me on a boat in the middle of the ocean with a bunch of strangers for two weeks, you can imagine how I felt.

Little did I know that this would turn out to be one of the best experiences of my life.

A few months later, there I was, standing on the pier of a small port in Saint Martin, a tiny island in the middle of the Caribbean, waving goodbye to my parents. I was utterly consumed with fear: fear of what could happen to me while I was on that boat, fear of what could happen to my family

while I was gone, and—above all—the fear of having my phone taken from me. As I stepped onto the small boat and felt the rocking of the waves for the first time, I felt like I was about to throw up. Whether it was due to the waves or because my phone really was taken from me, I am still not sure.

After a few icebreaker activities with my fellow sailors, we were sent off to bed. The first night was arguably the worst of my entire life. The bed didn’t feel like my own, the cabin was stuffy and had a weird smell, the anchor outside would creak every time a wave hit it, and my cabinmate snored very, very loudly.

Bright and early the next morning, we were awakened by one of our counselors, Luke, blasting music from the boat’s speakers. We barely had any time to wake up before we had to put on our lifejackets and start learning how to sail. We were first tasked with getting out of a cove and sailing to a nearby island while avoiding the giant rock sticking out of the water on the way.

When the counselors started assigning people to certain tasks, I was given the task of steering the boat. I was terrified that I was the one who had to make sure we all got to our next destination without any “unplanned dockings.” However, when I took the wheel and was given some tips from the head counselor, I realized that maybe this trip wouldn’t be as bad as I thought it would be.

The confidence we have developed in ourselves here at Calvert, our willingness to stretch our comfort zones, and the bonds we have made will last well into the future.

The next few days were a blur of swimming, playing card games I had never even heard of, and sailing to places that looked straight out of Moana. I was beginning to settle into my new life as a sailor. I had gotten used to the constant rocking of the waves, the odd music tastes of some of my crewmates, and even the sleeping conditions.

Throughout the two weeks, we anchored multiple times at small islands and were allowed to roam with very little supervision. It was the most independence I had ever had, and it was great.

Every day, I grew closer to the people on the boat—not just

my crewmates, but also the counselors. The people on the boat were from all over, including several exotic locations. Maria was from Luxembourg, Luke was from California, and three of my friends were even from Connecticut.

Before I knew it, the two weeks were coming to an end. After our big sail back to where we started, we docked for the final time and said our goodbyes. I was filled with a sense of sadness at the fact that I might never see these people again. I was going to miss the close bonds I had built with everyone on that boat.

As I reflect on this trip, it is hard not to think of the similarities it shares with my Calvert experience. Ten years ago, I was dropped off for school for the first time, carrying a backpack that was half my size, and I am sure that I was quite afraid. I was separated not from a phone, but a trusted blanket, and put with a bunch of people that I had never met before. At naptime, there were at least a couple of people who snored very loudly, but I’m not going to name names.

However, the fear I felt at the beginning did not last.

Just like when I was asked to steer a boat, my peers and I were given responsibilities that kept us engaged, whether it was assuming the coveted role of line leader, starring on stage in a class play, or more recently, serving as an Eighth Grade Captain. We expanded our horizons by learning about our city, country, and world, sharing what we learned through folder papers, research reports, and reflections. We experienced great ILP trips that had us traversing caves in West Virginia, sleeping in coyote-filled deserts in New Mexico, and ziplining through the canopy of a Costa Rican rainforest.

Along the way, we got to know each other very well and built lots of close friendships.

It can be sad when a voyage comes to an end, but the fact that no voyage lasts forever reminds us of the importance of cherishing every moment. I have learned that your experiences on a journey stay with you even after it’s over. The confidence we have developed in ourselves here at Calvert, our willingness to stretch our comfort zones, and the bonds we have made will last well into the future.

We all have new experiences and challenges ahead of us. There could be a lot to fear about some of them, but I encourage you to not let fear of difficulties get in the way of trying new things. In doing what is difficult, you might learn the most. As another American president, John F. Kennedy, once said, “We do [these] things not because they are easy, but because they are hard.” Thank you.

from exams to extracurriculars, calvert teachers shape all areas of student life

C

alvert teachers are the lifeblood of our School’s academic, athletic, and community programs, and they often go above and beyond in service to our students.

Inside the classroom, this manifests as one-on-one instruction and assistance, careful consideration of each student’s well-being, and creative lessons designed to keep all children engaged.

Most importantly, these relationships do not end with daily dismissal. All around campus, Calvert teachers regularly stay beyond the bell to lead clubs and auxiliary programs, coach sports, offer community engagement opportunities, support student leadership, and more.

Together, these contributions create an invaluable Calvert experience that strengthens our community and supports whole-child development.

LEADERSHIP AT HOME AND ABROAD Calvert School’s thriving leadership and community engagement programs would not be possible without the teachers and administrators who make time for immersive off-campus excursions and overnight adventures. During the 2025-2026 school year, Calvert facilitated five major leadership journeys, three overnight grade-level retreats, one multi-day Mini Week, and an all-new Excursion Week for Middle School students.

Nearly all Middle School faculty participated in on and offcampus workshops during these special days, and 19 percent of all Calvert teachers elected to lead a multi-day leadership journey, taking time away from their own families, pets, homes, and routines.

These experiences provide real-world skillbuilding and leadership opportunities at a crucial time in students’ development, and they would not be feasible without the teachers’ commitment and openess to additional trainings.

During the 2025-2026 school year...

A COACH FOR ALL SEASONS Calvert’s Middle School athletics program stands out because it is led entirely by Calvert personnel—adults on campus who already know the kids they are coaching. Led by Athletic Director Phil D’Adamo, 42 percent of teachers coached at least one Middle School sport during the 2025-2026 school year, committing four afternoons per week to student health, well-being, and additional instruction. Of these, close to 40 percent coached two or more sports, with Lower School physical education teacher Nick Tittle and Middle School Latin teacher Michael Betkowski coaching in all three seasons.

Regardless of wins and losses, these extra hours with familiar faces improve student-teacher relationships, open new lines of communication, and encourage students to feel comfortable asking for support when needed.

CAMPS, CLUBS, AND CREATING JOY Managed by Director of Auxiliary Programs Christine Hitman, nearly all Lower School clubs and Summer at Calvert programs are facilitated by Calvert teachers, and many choose to host activities near and dear to their own interests.

This fall, music aficionado and Ninth Age teacher David Meadows encouraged students to “rock on” in the History of Rock and Roll Club. Throughout the year, art teachers Nicole Thompson and Katie Leonard teamed up for “Crafternoons.”

Another standout club—and later summer camp—came from Sixth Age teacher Caroline Marris and Lower School science and math teacher Sarah Schweiger, who brought Ms. Marris’ Harry Potter Club to life during Summer 2025.

The pair worked with the Summer at Calvert team to offer an immersive Sorting ceremony, organize Quidditch games and

wizard-like crafts, and sponsor an inter-house competition, or House Cup, between Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Gryffindor campers.

Energy, passion, and creativity—like those displayed by Ms. Marris, Ms. Schweiger, and other camp and club leaders— are invaluable for enriching elementary education, and the students take notice. Engaging offerings like these help children feel connected to Calvert and its teachers after school hours, over long stretches of summer vacation, and far into the future.

As Virgil Hillyer, Calvert’s first Head Master, once believed, elements of whimsy and fun are the keys to all learning, and Calvert’s educators have never turned from this path. Instead, teachers actively work to foster joy within the classroom and all across campus.

A LIFETIME OF LEARNING

CALVERT RETIREE: SKIP HOWE ’77 For 26 years, alumnus and longtime educator Skip Howe ’77 has served as one of Calvert’s most dedicated and well-rounded teachers, making invaluable contributions to our School’s curriculum, travel programs, and student life before retiring in June 2026.

Since joining the Calvert team, Mr. Howe has acted as a Ninth Age homeroom teacher, a Middle School math teacher, leader of the Focus student group, and an ILP leadership journey advisor.

Before it all, he was a Calvert student.

Following in the footsteps of his mother, Barbara Kerr Howe ’51, Mr. Howe attended Calvert School with his sister, Susan Howe Baron ’74. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Gordon College and later a Master of Divinity from Southern Seminary, demonstrating a lifelong love of learning.

In August 2000, Mr. Howe returned to campus as a Ninth Age boys’ assistant and later homeroom teacher before transitioning to the Middle School in 2012. Since returning, Mr. Howe has been a steadfast supporter of all Calvert students, often lending his cheery disposition and warmth to challenging concepts and curricula.

Thanks in part to his optimism and kindness, as well as his classroom expertise, Mr. Howe has earned two of Calvert’s most prestigious honors, the Apgar Award for Excellence in Instruction in 2006 and the Deborah D. In addition, Mr. Howe has been the recipient of multiple John Work Garrett ’36 Summer Study grants, which enabled him to explore destinations including Cairo, Egypt, and Chiang Mai, Thailand, to enhance his teaching.

A savvy traveler, Mr. Howe has repeatedly used his global-thinking skills to guide students on leadership journeys to the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and Costa Rica.

Behind the scenes, Mr. Howe has also repeatedly advocated for the Calvert Fund and held positions on the Alumni Board, demonstrating his commitment to Calvert. For students in need of extra assistance or clarification, academic instruction also continues outside the classroom. In the Middle School, the Calvert learning specialists are always available to offer guidance, and the Lyceum empowers all children to engage with learning in a more casual, accessible space.

After the bell, Calvert educators also offered two family-focused workshops this year. In the fall, Middle School counselor Meg Hartings, who also teaches human development, hosted Parenting With Impact, a parent-focused seminar that shared strategies for building connection with students to help them overcome challenges, gain confidence, and more.

In the spring, K-8 Math Coordinator Katie Cooch organized three enriching evenings of math-focused fun with a series of Math à la Modes. On March 31, April 9, and April 23, Mrs. Cooch, Director of Academic Affairs Sarah Crowley, and Lower School Interim Head Ashley Heller welcomed two grade levels per night for ice cream and hands-on math games that mirrored inclass lessons and concepts.

These events were designed to bring parents, students, and teachers together to improve math understanding, both the concepts themselves and how they are taught, among families.

ATHLETICS 2025-2026 SNAPSHOT

With a participation rate of 96 percent among Sixth through Eighth Grade students, Middle School sports continue to be some of Calvert’s most popular offerings. During the 20252026 school year, nearly 160 students played at least one sport across the three offered seasons and 14 options, with many opting for two or more.

In addition to offering intramurals and ballroom dance, coaches also invited the Fifth Graders to try track & field and wrestling, bolstering the teams’ numbers and introducing the students to interscholastic play.

HIGHLIGHTS The Boys’ A and Girls’ A soccer teams made it to the Baltimore Area Conference (BAC) championship games, where the girls triumphed over Harford Day to claim the title.

The Girls’ A basketball team claimed victory over Harford Day in the BAC championship this winter.

In January, 12 members of the squash team represented Calvert in the U.S. Squash Middle School Championships. The boys finished seventh, and the girls claimed 15th nationally.

Both the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams fought hard to make it into their BAC championships, where each group prevailed against St. James Academy.

In the fall, members of the cross country team competed in the BAC and Maryland Private School championship meets.

This spring, Calvert runners also competed in the Youth Bowl Championship Meet.

1 Lila Boss’27 opens this year’s Middle School musical as the titular character, Matilda.

A

fter more than three months of preparation and rehearsal, the cast and crew of Matilda Jr. hit the stage this winter to debut a powerful, energetic performance rooted in magic, imagination, and being “just a bit naughty.”

Directed by drama teacher Madee Kline with support from Lower School music teacher Holly Florian and a team of Calvert teachers, this year’s Middle School musical attracted more than 400 audience members, selling out both shows on February 27 and 28.

Nearly 80 students in Sixth through Eighth Grade contributed on stage and behind the scenes—working together to not only learn lines and lyrics, but create set pieces, design costumes, manage lights and sound, and more to bring Matilda to life.

“There is nothing quite like watching a group of young people come together to create something as special as a musical production,” Ms. Kline said. “As an ensemble of individuals, responsible for their own individual roles, they created something cohesive with its own personal style and flair. The production lasts for what seems like a minuscule moment, but the memories last for a lifetime!”

Based on the beloved children’s book by Roald Dahl and its musical adaptations, Matilda Jr. focuses on the titular Matilda, an excessively bright and clever girl, and her unhappy experiences with the adults that surround her. Most notable are her unavailable parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood, and the cruel school headmistress, Agatha Trunchbull.

As Matilda struggles to navigate these relationships, she spends time with the kind librarian, Mrs. Phelps, and finds a friend in her teacher, Miss Honey, whose own childhood mirrors Matilda’s. Resolved to change her circumstances and those of her friends and classmates, Matilda ultimately discovers the strength—and special power—within herself.

As in years past, the musical team split performers into two casts and dual-cast several roles, allowing all interested students to participate.

This year, Lila Boss ’27 and Estella Detterline ’27 led their respective casts as Matilda. Charlie Mudd ’27 and Phoebe McClellan ’27 split the role of Mr. Wormwood alongside Dean Connelly ’27 and Zina Nwadi ’27 as Mrs. Wormwood.

Cameron Piel ’27 and Maggie Grigg ’26 portrayed the tyrannical Trunchbull against Arabella Wiseman ’26 and Nina Mathioudakis ’26 as the beloved Miss Honey.

Rounding out the casts are featured characters Mrs. Phelps, played by Fiyin Tegbe ’26 and Kayla Jones ’28, students Bruce (Jameson Detterline ’26 and Sam Stephenson ’28) and Lavender (Zoe Green ’26 and Maia Benitez ’28), the acrobat (Renee Jones ’27), and the escapologist (Decarlos Carter ’27) in addition to an exceptional array of Cruchem Hall students and ensemble performers.

Behind the scenes, faculty and staff members Katie Leonard, Megan DeLorbe, Ashley Johnson, Diana Talbott, Jeff Chenoweth, and Craig Luntz further supported the show by guiding students through choreography, set and costume design, and lighting and sound.

A team of more than 20 students focused on set design alone, devoting themselves to building Roald Dahl’s world. Meanwhile, Anya Sandy ’26 and Tanitoluwa Jaiyesimi ’27 took on leadership roles as assistant director and choreographer, respectively.

“Putting on a production like Matilda is no easy feat! There are numerous moving parts. From creating a rehearsal schedule that is compatible with our booked and busy student schedules to coordinating with lighting, tech, and costumes, the list goes on,” Ms. Kline said. “Fortunately, we had team members who participated in a Calvert production in the past, and we were able to add two incredibly talented, organized, and responsible students to the Production Team! ”

COMMUNITY THRIVES AMID FRIENDLY COMPETITION AS THE CALVERT FLAG FOOTBALL LEAGUE (CFFL) LOOKS AHEAD TO ITS FIFTH SEASON

S

ince its inception in 2022, the Calvert Flag Football League (CFFL) has reliably drawn hundreds of players, parents, siblings, and coaches to the Luetkemeyer Athletic Center on wintry Sunday mornings. Now heading toward its fifth season in 2026, the league has become one of Calvert’s most beloved auxiliary programs.

The league’s format has not changed much over time: For ten weeks in November through February, teams in three agebased divisions face off in the Luetkemeyer Athletic Center, or LAC, on Sunday mornings. Each February—usually on Super Bowl Sunday—the best-performing teams go head to head in championship games, with winners earning special t-shirts, hats, and bragging rights.

So, what is the CFFL’s secret sauce? What has kept families coming back year after year and encouraged new families to join as they discover Calvert?

“Flag football is just a wonderful game. It’s fun, fast-paced, high energy, and the kids love it, but in the end, it’s our families that make it so great,” Coach D’Adamo shared. “The energy in the LAC is electric. Every time someone experiences a game for the first time, they express to me how wild it was and share that they had no idea how exciting it could be.”

Open to children aged 6 to 12 years old, the CFFL began as three divisions of four teams each, with 121 athletes participating in the 2022 season. Since then, the league has nearly doubled in size, drawing more than 210 players in its most recent season.

To accommodate this growth, the program—conceived

by Calvert administrators and then-members of the Lower School physical education team—has had to adapt, growing each of the divisions to four, six, and eight teams, respectively.

As part of this growth, the CFFL has created new opportunities for young alumni and Calvert teachers to get involved. This year, five high-school and college-aged alumni—Owen Holmgren ’17, Jackson Angulo-Bartlett ’22, Charlie Oliver ’24, Charlie Macsherry ’25, and James Niccolini ’24— returned to campus as coaches, with Charlie O. and Jackson eventually leading teams to championship titles. Past alumni coaches include Will Holmgren ’21, Liam Brennan ’24, and Toby Rosenband ’22.

“One of the best things about coaching is having former players get into coaching themselves. The fact that alumni want to come back and coach is a testament to not only Calvert and what it meant to them, but it's also a nod to anyone who coached them as athletes themselves,” Coach D’Adamo said. “They have been incredible working with these kids, and you can see it in the eyes of the players. We are seeing role models being admired in real time.”

Calvert teachers Michael Betkowski, Josh Angulo-Bartlett, and Nick Tittle also stepped onto the turf as coaches, joining Coach D’Adamo and the alumni in helping to grow young athletes.

During the 2025-2026 season, the league also launched its first all-girls team, a fan-favorite group known for its tenacity on the field. The league has always been co-ed, but this year’s athletes showed a camaraderie and competitive spirit that inspired the creation of their own team.

“Knowing all of the students and athletes that were signing up, I knew I wanted to be directly involved with this group.

I’ve coached a lot, including coaching high-school football for almost 20 years, and can honestly say that I've never had more fun than coaching those girls,” Coach D’Adamo said.

“The crowds that would watch and cheer for them were unmatched,” he continued. “The girls truly had an energy and vibe about them when they played.”

As Fall 2026 and the CFFL’s fifth season inches closer, Coach D’Adamo and Director of Auxiliary Programs Christine Hitman are already thinking about how Sunday mornings in the LAC can be celebrated and improved.

“Once families start getting registered for the next season, we’ll see where the numbers lead us in deciding what the next step is,” Coach D’Adamo shared. “It has been an honor and a blast having a hand in this league. If there is a way I can try and make it even better, I’m going to go for it.”

The growing Institute for Leadership & Purpose (ILP) and its immersive learning opportunities have become a marquee program that sets Calvert School apart. This year, 96 students in Seventh and Eighth Grade participated in five ILP leadership journeys with unique location-based themes and priorities.

Accompanied by Calvert teachers, the students engaged in diverse programming designed to expand worldviews and encourage global thinking.

CHILAMATE, COSTA RICA In October, 20 Eighth Grade students journeyed to Chilamate for a week of experiential learning rooted in cultural immersion, responsible tourism, and rainforest preservation with the World Leadership School (WLS).

SPRUCE KNOB, WEST VIRGINIA In partnership with Experience Learning, 17 Seventh Graders traveled to Monongahela National Forest for five days of outdoor education.

Teacher Travel and Professional Development In addition to leading student trips, all Calvert educators are invited to propose and apply for professional development opportunities like the John Work Garrett ’36 Summer Study Grant. This memorial fund provides Calvert teachers with the resources to pursue new skills, diverse perspectives, and immersive opportunities to enhance their instruction.

In Summer 2025, five teachers set off with this goal. Middle School French teacher Gregory Bretiere explored the Basque cultural region of southern France and northern Spain, where he visited UNESCO-listed historical sites and honed his approach to teaching regional heritage and identity. Nearby, Lower School art teacher Gracie Sanders studied marbling, mosaics, and other classical forms of art while touring Paris, France, and Italian cities like Venice, Florence, and Rome.

In Central America, Middle School teacher Kim Daly joined Insight’s Ex-Ed Abroad program in Mexico City, where she and fellow educators focused on rainwater catchment systems related to the Fifth Grade’s annual Walk for Water project. To the south, Lower School Spanish teacher Shaina Longway spent time with host families in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador.

Closer to home, K-8 Math Coordinator Katie Cooch hopped over to Yorkshire, England, and returned to Maryland’s own St. Mary’s City to trace the path of George Calvert and colonial figures aboard the Ark and the Dove.

In the fall, Lower School science teacher Sarah Schweiger participated in the ARES Learning Earth and Space Experience that included travel to Texas and New Mexico, where she gained a greater understanding of space exploration and planetary science.

ISEEN Winter Institute In years past, a number of Calvert teachers have traveled for Independent School Experiential Education Network (ISEEN) conferences—but in 2026, an entire conference came to campus.

In January, Calvert hosted more than 115 educators for the 21st ISEEN Winter Institute, a massive undertaking that featured student presentations and workshops led by Calvert teachers Caroline Marris, Sean Donmoyer, Wendy Faraone, Katie Leonard, Aden Knott, ILP Director Sarah DeCamps, and Director of Academic Affairs Sarah Crowley.

Behind the scenes, Ms. DeCamps worked closely with ISEEN personnel and peer schools to bring this exciting opportunity to Calvert.

Programs like these promote camaraderie and connection between Lower and Middle School students while encouraging both parties to learn from one another— inside the classroom and beyond.

This year, initiatives led by teachers Wendy Faraone and Matthew Gallo ’15, ILP Director Sarah DeCamps, and the Eighth Grade Captains flourished thanks to student interest and strong cross-division communication, resulting in ample opportunities for Middle and Lower School students to connect in a variety of settings.

Just a few weeks later, the Fifth Age students and Eighth Grade Environmental Stewards launched a new Eco Buddies initiative. Inspired by their leadership journeys to Costa Rica and the Bahamas, the Eighth Graders built this program to introduce concepts of sustainability and outdoor education to Calvert's youngest students. Together, the Mighty Bees read seasonal books, made sustainable crafts, explored oncampus outdoor learning spaces, and planned a winter bird-watching expedition.

For students in Fifth Age and Eighth Grade, one such partnership began during the first days of school.

For the Eighth Graders, the Eco Buddies program provides the opportunity to mentor younger students while fostering care for the environment. For the Fifth Agers, the program provides trusted role models who display curiosity, a deep appreciation for the outdoors, and what it means to be responsible members of a community.

MLK JR. DAY OF SERVICE During the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on January 16, Seventh and Eighth Grade students headed to the Lower School to lead their younger schoolmates in a range of community-engagement efforts. Eighth Grade representatives assisted in Fifth Age and Seventh through Ninth Age homerooms, guiding the Lower Schoolers in making kindness bookmarks and Valentine’s Day cards for local nursing homes, building birthday kits for Baltimore Hunger Project, and packaging beans and rice for Paul’s Place.

Ten Seventh Graders joined in and worked with the Sixth Age students to make no-sew pet blankets for local animal shelters and rescue centers. Meanwhile, the rest of the Seventh Graders joined forces with the Tenth Age and remaining Middle Schoolers to package 30,000 meal kits in partnership with the global nonprofit Rise Against Hunger.

THE MOVE TO THE MIDDLE SCHOOL Each winter, as Tenth Age families look ahead to “moving up” and heading across campus, Middle School Head Matt Buck ’87 and the Fifth Grade team step up to ensure every child has a smooth transition. The current Fifth Graders are invaluable to this process. In mid-January, guides from the Class of 2029 met with the Tenth Agers to share advice, answer questions, and help everyone navigate new environments and responsibilities. Together, the students enjoyed snack, recess, and academic classes while sharing tips for embracing new opportunities and expectations.

creatures, called Yets, that guide children through challenges and perceived failures. In DiTerlizzi’s work, the Yets help transform thoughts of “I can’t do it” to “I can’t do it yet” in order to teach readers the value of perseverance.

After reading the book, the Fifth Agers drew their own Yets and passed their creations off to Middle School art teacher Katie Leonard, who worked with the Sewing Club to sew and stuff plush versions of each child’s creature. In May, the students returned the plush Yets to their rightful owners, who were overjoyed to see their creations brought to life.

DONOR IMPACT CELEBRATING CALVERT’S LEADERSHIP SUPPORTERS

his spring, leadership supporters gathered for two special cultivation events that celebrated the immense impact of their generosity.

In March, Presidents’ Circle members enjoyed time together in the Middle School Atrium and heard remarks from Andrew Holmgren that underscored the importance of their support.

HIGH SCHOOL NIGHT On September 30, Calvert held its annual High School Fair for the Class of 2026 and their parents. Representatives from 27 day and boarding schools attended, and more than 60 young alumni returned as ambassadors for their high schools!

BROWN ADVISORY BREAKFAST On December 4, members of the Calvert community gathered for breakfast at Brown Advisory’s Baltimore office. This event honored the deep Calvert connections shared among nearly 30 alumni, current and past parents, and trustees affiliated with Brown Advisory, and recognized their longstanding dedication to the School.

COMMUNITY RECEPTION AT BLAKEHURST On April 20, Calvert alumni and friends at Blakehurst gathered to celebrate their ties to the school. Head Master Andrew Holmgren shared an update on Calvert today and thanked the guests for the many ways they’ve helped Calvert remain a strong educational foundation for generations of students. lumni came together in April to celebrate Alumni Weekend 2026, honoring Calvert School’s traditions and the strong connections formed here.

The festivities kicked off on Wednesday, April 8, with two alumni panels on campus. High-school alumni met with the Class of 2026 to share advice about the transition into Ninth Grade, from navigating new schedules to managing their time and advocating for themselves.

The morning continued with a career panel, where alumni discussed how their time at Calvert prepared them for their professional journeys. Panelists encouraged the students to step outside of their comfort zones with confidence, try new things, discover their passions, and be open to collaborating with others.

On Friday morning, the inaugural Legacy Breakfast brought together students and their alumni parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. The special event celebrated bonds across generations and gave families a chance to reflect on their ongoing ties to Calvert.

Middle School Head Matt Buck ’87 welcomed everyone, shared his own family’s long history at Calvert, and spoke about the enduring sense of connection. Guests enjoyed sharing stories, remembering traditions, and seeing their part in continuing a Calvert education. The breakfast helped strengthen family bonds and deepen everyone’s appreciation for Calvert’s legacy.

Building and began their visit in the same way they began each day as students, with a handshake from the Head Master.

Alumni saw familiar spaces, such as the Lower School Auditorium, and explored new spaces, including the Lower School Science and Music Wing.

The visit also included interactive classroom experiences. Sixth Grade science teacher Matthew Gallo ’15 led a lunar-themed show in the Luetkemeyer Planetarium as a nod to the Artemis II mission. Following the show, alumni enjoyed a Ninth Age music class with Lower School teacher Holly Florian, where they participated in several of the students’ favorite music games.

On Saturday, reunion classes gathered to celebrate lifelong friendships and reminisce about their time on Tuscany Road.

Throughout the four days of celebrations, it was evident that Calvert is more than just an elementary and middle school for alumni. It represents their childhood and their foundation. It is an enduring community, and it is home.

A Calling to Teach Alumni in Education

How Calvert School informed their unique journeys

I

nspired by their school days, some educators know early on that they want to teach. For others, the journey starts later, sparked by curiosity or chance. Calvert alumni in education share a belief in learning and dedication to their students.

From Baltimore to New York City and beyond, these alumni help students build confidence and curiosity. Their shared experiences connect them, as each finds distinctive ways to inspire students while holding on to lessons from their time at Calvert.

For Nancy Swindell Levine ’07, that connection has come full circle. Now a Tenth Age teacher at Calvert School, Levine vividly remembers her time as a student on Tuscany Road.

“It felt like home,” she says. “I was able to connect with my classmates and my teachers, and they made school fun.”

Now, she finds that same sense of purpose in daily classroom life. She loves seeing the “lightbulb moment” when a student learns something new. She encourages her students to try new things and enjoys watching them grow and discover their abilities.

Levine always hoped to return to Calvert, saying “It was my dream.” She joined the faculty in 2018 and now brings both her experience and her deep connection to the School into the classroom. Calvert’s traditions still mean a lot to her, and sharing her memories helps her connect with students.

“It is fun to connect with them about my experiences here,” she says.

For Sloane Macdonald ’14, the path to teaching started with curiosity and questions. After studying psychology and

English at Queen’s University, Macdonald took a seminar on how people learn.

“I had never considered a career in education,” she says.

“But I had long been curious about how children learn to read and write.”

Thinking back, she realized her early years at Calvert were important for building a strong foundation in language.

“During my most formative years, Calvert had shaped me into a strong reader and writer,” she says.

Through her college course, she realized that not all students have access to the same instruction she did, nor do they learn the same way or with the same results.

This interest brought Macdonald to The Windward School in New York, an independent day school for students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences.

The School’s teacher training program gave her the chance to learn more about the science of reading and to make a meaningful impact in the classroom.

“I suddenly had the opportunity to teach in a classroom while taking professional development courses that answered my questions about how children learn,” Macdonald shares.

Since joining Windward in 2022, Macdonald has found her passion for teaching. She works with third and fourth graders and especially enjoys helping children learn to read.

“I have absolutely fallen in love with teaching,” she says.

Macdonald’s story shows that alumni don’t have to plan on teaching from the start. Teaching isn’t always a straight path, and there’s always more to learn.

“I would encourage other alums to follow their interests and to look for jobs that offer opportunities to continue their own education,” she says.

She is now working toward a master’s degree in literacy instruction through Windward’s postgraduate program.

As with Macdonald and Levine, Brent Powell ’81 found his way to a career in education through personal experience.

His time as a tennis counselor at Camp Pasquany in New Hampshire provided the first spark as he discovered how much he enjoyed working with teenagers and as part of a team. His years as a history teacher at Trinity-Pawling School in New York and Gilman School solidified this interest. For Powell, education became meaningful when he A R O U N D CAALM UP MUNSI

saw students deeply engaged in their own learning.

matter,” he explains.

A formative experience came during his time at Gilman, when he led the Federal Reserve Challenge, in which upper-school students worked collaboratively to research and present a solution to a designated economic topic.

Creating environments where students feel seen, heard, and empowered can transform how they approach learning and themselves. An important focus for Powell and Design Challenge Network is to introduce this approach into environments that may be underserved.

“What I saw were students engaged in deep and powerful ways,” Powell says.

Student participation in the challenge was not for a class or a grade. As an educator, he says this “planted the seed of what student engagement and real-world learning could mean.”

Powell went on to spend 15 years as a teacher and administrator at The Derryfield School in New Hampshire. In his role as Dean of Faculty & Academic Program, Powell realized he could help move the School toward student-centered learning with an emphasis on 21st-century skills. While teaching at Derryfield, he had his students participate in the University of New Hampshire’s Community Changemaker Challenge.

“It really sparked my interest in exploring a deeper educational experience and bringing this type of learning to more students,” he shares.

This led Powell to found the Design Challenge Network, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering teachers to reimagine what learning looks like in their classrooms and to provide students with opportunities for real-world learning rooted in problem-solving and collaboration. He believes schools should continue to focus on important skills such as critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, and public speaking. These competencies are important no matter how the world changes.

“We’re making a bet on timeless skills,” he says.

For Powell, meaningful learning happens when students feel ownership and agency.

“We need all of our young people to believe that their voices

This belief continues to guide his work with students and educators alike. Reflecting on his career, Powell says education offers “a tremendous number of opportunities to have an impact on students.” More than anything, he remains inspired by the chance to help young people become engaged thinkers, collaborators, and lifelong learners.

Much like Powell, Brandon Neblett ’83 expanded his role from teaching to leadership, but his unwavering priority remains his students.

Now Head of Upper School at Glenelg Country School in Ellicott City, Maryland, Neblett began his career teaching history and Latin while working with students in the classroom and through outdoor programs.

“I fell in love with Latin in eighth grade,” Neblett recalls.

“There is something magical about it. It’s like a detective story. Latin provides a doorway into languages.”

Calvert’s emphasis on the fundamentals and its distinctive approach to building them has stayed with Neblett his entire career.

“I remember reading with interest the many articles about the ‘Reading Wars’ of the 1980s-2000s because Calvert’s straightforward phonics-based approach was so successful in my time and was ultimately validated across the nation,” he says. “I could never understand why there was any conflict over that. It all seemed so obvious what worked.”

Educators such as his Calvert Seventh Age teacher, Peg Licht, helped inform Neblett’s approach with his own students.

“Mrs. Licht was wonderful,” he says. “So much of what she did was about blending care and accountability for her students.”

Over time, he found he loved teaching and became interested in how schools work as complex organizations. Early leadership roles as grade dean and founding faculty member at Sage Hill School in Orange County, California, taught him to think institutionally. Neblett brought this understanding to his role as history department chair at St. Paul’s School. During his

time at St. Paul’s, Neblett worked on special projects that were integral to the strategic direction of the school, which fired his imagination to think institutionally. The experience at both schools galvanized his thinking, showing him how many parts come together to shape a school.

That broad perspective still guides how he leads today.

Neblett believes it’s important to help students develop the skills they need for a complex world. In what he calls an “age of information overload,” he says it’s more important than ever to think critically and creatively, work well with others, and stay curious.

“Can you think carefully and deliberately? Can you find and evaluate resources? Can you think clearly from point A to point B and understand the obstacles and resources needed along the way?” he asks.

These are the habits he wants students to develop, along with curiosity and creativity, which he defines in part as the ability to seek alternative answers to traditional questions.

“The ability to ask really good questions is, in my mind, more important than the ability to have an answer,” he says, because it can open the door for different perspectives and pave the way for creative solutions that would otherwise be untapped.

“A lot of kids find their greatest success outside of the classroom,” he says.

He believes that teachers should be flexible, open, and ready to support students in multiple ways. As a school leader, Neblett believes that one of his key roles is to help teachers develop new skills that enable them to have a greater impact.

“Professional development is an important part of leadership,” he says. “You have to look for opportunities for teachers to grow and to broaden what they do.”

Throughout each alumni story, several key themes emerge: commitment to lifelong learning, the value of relationships, and a desire to make a difference in young people’s lives.

For those considering a career in education, the alumni offer advice that is both practical and personal. Neblett says that being versatile is more important than ever in today’s schools, and Macdonald emphasizes the value of growth and discovery, urging alumni to stay open to new opportunities.

“I highly recommend that anyone interested explore a path in education,” she says. “It’s incredibly rewarding."

In the end, teaching is more than a job. It is about building connections, sparking curiosity, and caring for students.

Every day, teachers help students discover not just what they can learn, but who they can become.

Neblett says, “If you’re looking for a career where you can have an impact and develop lasting relationships, then a career in schools is worth considering.”

My career has been a testament to how you can get to know different communities and bring them with you.

This helped me integrate different views on education.

Class Notes Class of 1942 “Old-timer” John Wolfe ’42 reports that his best news is that he’s still “alive and kickin’," living at Ridgeway Senior Living.

John has been in Alaska since its statehood in 1959, and he is forging ahead to age 100 in 2030. John shares, “I’m in pretty good health for my age and would enjoy having an email from any other survivors from our Class of 1942!”

Class of 1951 Reunion

Bob Lacy ’46 still works at Chatham Sign Shop in Chatham, Massachusetts, six days a week, selling signs for homes and businesses. He has been doing the same thing since founding the company in 1989. Before that, Bob was into sports, especially tournament tennis, in which he was ranked in the top 20 in New England during the 1970s. He also enjoyed wilderness skiing in Alaska and surfing in Hawaii. Bob is married with two boys who are now ages 40 and 50.

Class of 1950 Betsy Hart Porter ’50 reports that all five of the Hart siblings (including Cathy Hart ’53, John Hart ’56, Gordon Hart ’60, and Anne Hart Smith ’63) are alive and active! They meet weekly by Zoom. Betsy lives in Piedmont Gardens, an attractive retirement community in Oakland, California.

Although she traveled widely over the past few years, her mobility problems no longer permit it. Betsy retired two years ago from her job writing architectural specifications.

Her lifelong enjoyment of art and crafts continues. At a local workshop, Betsy makes silver and gemstone jewelry, which she sells on Etsy. She also paints icons in Byzantine style, a time-consuming traditional sacred art, in which everything, from brush strokes to materials, is symbolic.

Class of 1951 Marion Parsons DeGroff ’51 shares that on April 9, the Class of 1951 celebrated its 75th Reunion at a luncheon.

Luke Breckinridge ’51 lives in Lakewood, Colorado, and reports that he is much the same, maybe with a few extra pounds and a little grey at the temples. In honor of his 75th reunion, Luke reminisced about time with his classmates since their graduation. Following high school, Luke found Sam Hopkins ’51 at Harvard College. He spent several happy summers with Tom Garrett ’51 during college including obligatory motor tours of the United States in 1957 and of Europe in 1959. During medical school at Johns Hopkins, Luke connected with Tom Garrett, James Gieske ’51, Frank Gluck ’51, Crossan O’Donovan ’51, and Billy Woodward ’51. Frank Gluck was the medical resident who guided Luke through the first terrifying internship rotation at Vanderbilt. Luke says he is forever grateful to Frank for that.

Billy Woodward was also in that program. He frequently saw Tom and Cappie Garrett while at the University of Colorado around 1970. Skipping ahead 50 years, Luke had dinner with Tom and Cappie about a year ago when they were briefly in Denver, which he says was wonderful!

Frank Gluck ’51 reports that despite having lived outside of Baltimore since 1965, he still feels close to the city. The wonderful class reunion, orchestrated by Marion Parsons

DeGroff ’51 and others, had a lot to do with that. In addition, Frank has been his Gilman class secretary for the past ten years and recently subscribed to the e-edition of the Baltimore Sun, which enables him to keep up with all the events in the city (and his beloved Orioles). Frank shares, “It really points out that the place where one grows up will always be home.”

Barbara Kerr Howe ’51 reports that life is busy! She still works several days a week as a judge in the Circuit Court, usually in Baltimore County and Harford County. On the weekends, Barbara enjoys attending classes where she makes greeting cards. Her children live close by which Barbara says is “wonderful!” Barbara enjoyed seeing classmates at the Class of 1951's 75th reunion in April.

Class of 1952 Tom Ballard ’52 and his wife live in Concord, North Carolina, which is her hometown. His career was in the field of science. Tom worked for NASA for 10 years and then spent 20 years at a Navy laboratory. In addition, he found time to spend a year in Antarctica and two years circumnavigating the earth in a sailboat.

Bartie Riggs Cole ’52 shares that her dear husband passed away in Florida. On a happier note, she was able to go to Switzerland in August 2025 for the wedding of her granddaughter, Maclean Liotta ’10. Bartie spent the winter in Florida at the Hillsboro Club where she enjoyed time with her friends there and visits from her children and grandchildren. She returned to Maryland on May 1, and she looks forward to going to Switzerland in August!

Page Dame ’52 and his wife Beverly are coming up on their 28th wedding anniversary. They’ve been in Sarasota, Florida, since 2017 having relocated from northern Vermont, where they had been since 2002. While in Baltimore last fall, Page and Beverly stayed with Ann and Woody Woodward ’52 and saw Marie Claire and Randy Barker ’52. Page is also in frequent contact with George Michaels ’52.

Ben Griswold ’52 and his wife Wendy (Calvert Trustee) continue to live happily in Butler, Maryland, as they have for 39 years. Ben still goes to work at Brown Advisory and has a great

time working with a great group of (much) younger people. Ben had the wonderful luck to win the Maryland Hunt Cup in April!

Cynthia Dryden Kelly ’52 moved into North Hill, a retirement community in Needham, Massachusetts, in 2015 after having spent almost 40 years in Wellesley. Her two kids and three grandkids are nearby. After Calvert, Cynthia went to Mt. St. Agnes High School and Notre Dame College. She worked for Social Security and went to graduate school at Boston College where she met her future husband. He earned his library master’s degree and worked as associate director of the Boston Public Library. She also earned her MBA at Boston University at age 42. Cynthia competed for years in badminton, which is the second most popular sport in the world! She served on the board of the U.S. Olympic Committee representing the sport. She was elected to the executive committee and served on the U.S. Olympic Foundation board, where she was vice chair while George Steinbrenner was chair. Cynthia took an Olympic youth badminton team to Moscow for the World Youth Games, served on the administrative Olympic team in Sydney, and represented the USOC at International Olympic events in Athens and Lausanne, among other things. Cynthia shares that she is in pretty good health and looks forward to reading the updates from classmates!

Anne Colston Wentz ’52 and her husband Dennis have been in Bozeman, Montana, for 16 years, and before that, Beaver Creek, Colorado, for 15 years. They are both retired physicians. Dennis was at the American Medical Association in Chicago, and Anne was a reproductive endocrinologist in academic medicine, mostly at Vanderbilt University. They are heavily involved with the arts in Bozeman, and Anne shares that there is an excellent symphony orchestra, two chamber groups, an active opera company, three theater groups, two dance companies and more!

Dennis has been trying to get a much-needed center for the arts built. Anne still goes out in her campervan pursuing trout, and she plays pickle twice a week. Dennis goes off to Chicago for long weekends of opera, theater, and symphony performances.

Woody Woodward ’52 shares that after some years away, he returned to Baltimore in 1986 to become curator of Asian art at the Walters Art Museum, accompanied by his wife, Ann, and children, Andrew and Emily. They are still in the house in North Roland Park they moved into then. Since retirement, Woody has remained moderately active in academic activities.

Jay West Riggs ’53 has lived in Nantucket, Massachusetts for 45 years. While she cannot garden or play golf anymore, she enjoys bridge, reading, and needlepoint. She shares, “My grands and nieces and nephews visit, so I am fortunate!” Jay sees fellow Calvert alumnae Anne Dobbin Bailliere ’53 and Liz Constable von Kessler ’56 in the summer. Jay shares that she was very sad to lose her sister-in-law, Peggy West, who was a former Calvert trustee and wife of her brother Butch West ’55.

Tom Chase ’57 lives in New Hampshire. He reports, "Happiness is... a snowblower that started every time. I enjoy starting my day with my Calvert coffee mug emblazoned with reminders.”

Class of 1955 Mac Passano ’55 reports that the adventures continue! He joined daughters Catherine Passano McDonnell ’88 and Tammy Passano Wiggs ’91 and their families on a trip to the Galapagos Islands with National Geographic/Lindblad Expeditions. After a week, Mac continued on to Peru with his two oldest granddaughters, Emma and Abby. They thoroughly enjoyed Peruvian culture and sights in Lima, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Cusco before returning home tired but enriched! Mac shares that the usual summers in Groton Long Point, with the addition of his daughter Sarah Passano Meech ’95 and her family, afford summer sports and good family times!

Rick Williams ’55 hosts the "Create the Future with Rick Williams" podcast on all major podcast channels. Leaders come on the podcast and share their stories about making difficult decisions for their organizations. The podcast draws on Rick’s best selling book, "Create the Future: The Leader’s Guidebook for Making Difficult Decisions." Rick skippered his J130 sailboat in the Newport to Bermuda race in June.

Class of 1958 Daisy Nelson White ’58 sends Daisy Nelson White ’58 greetings from Charleston, South Carolina, which is home to a few Calvert grads.

She and her husband Charles have been there for six years and love their adopted city.

Their five kids are all over the United States, including the two Calvert grads, Will Gee ’89 and Gordon Gee ’92, who live in Baltimore and Los Angeles, respectively. Daisy enjoys connecting with others from Calvert through the Alumni Board. She would love to hear from 1958 classmates about your shenanigans as the group wraps up its eighth decade. Daisy still teaches at the College of Charleston School of Business and coaches women through several client companies. In her spare time, Daisy enjoys painting everyday (and hopefully improving!) and doing a lot of reading. She and Charles traveled to Scotland in May for their traditional summer in North Berwick. Daisy would love visitors either in Charleston (October to May) or North Berwick (May to October).

Class of 1959 After 50 years in business, Steven Thomas ’59 decided to close the law firm of Thomas & Libowitz, P.A. and all attorneys, paraprofessionals, and admins joined the law Firm of Offit Kurman, P.A. ("OK"). OK consists of over 350 attorneys, many paraprofessionals, and numerous admins across the U.S. in most major cities from California to New York. Steven shares, “We believe we are better able to serve our existing clients, better able to attract new clients, and are pleased and proud to be with such a prestigious firm.”

Class of 1961 Mandy Savage Mahoney ’61 and her husband George have six grandchildren: two Calvert alums (Xander Martin ’15 and Adair Martin ’17) and two current Calvert attendees (George Mahoney ’34 and Bennett Mahoney in Kiddie Calvert) and hopefully one future Calvert student! She looks forward to getting the class together for the 65th reunion!

Clinton is now a Calvert grandparent as his daughter, Sophie Daly Nelson ’01, has two children in the Lower School, Ridgely Nelson ’35 and Riggs Nelson ’36.

Class of 1962 After twelve years in the Chris West ’62 Maryland General Assembly, four as a State Delegate and eight as a State Senator representing central and northern Baltimore County, Chris West ’62 chose not to stand for re-election for another four-year term as State Senator. Chris shares, “I believe there is a time to hold them and a time to fold them, and having just turned 76, this is an appropriate time to let someone younger take over my seat and represent my constituents.”

Class of 1965 Nancy Sullivan ’65 continues working with undocumented immigrants in the Cincinnati area. She enjoyed traveling to Puerto Rico with family, including Ned Sullivan ’55 and Sarah “Sally” Sullivan Robinson ’59. It was a wonderful change of pace!

Class of 1966 John Weisheit ’66 lives in Harford County, Maryland, where he is self-employed but semi-retired. He has two sons, Hunter and Christian, and a daughter, Laura. John shares,

Carol Campbell Haislip ’69 shares, “My new moniker is that I am a ’junior’ senior.” Her life is full with lots of outreach work, travel, and time with children and grandchildren who all blessedly live close by. Two of Carol’s grandchildren will attend Calvert next year so she will get to see all the changes to the School first hand. She can’t wait!

Class of 1970 Holly Ballard Kreutter ’70 lives in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, with her husband, Steve. They have three kids and seven grandchildren spread out across the country. Holly works part time at a neuropsychiatric medical clinic, helping with billing and office procedures. Additionally, she spends a lot of days taking migrants to their court hearings and ICE and ISAP check-ins. Holly shares, “The work is difficult and ever changing, but also fulfilling as the need in that space is so great.”

John Purnell ’70 is winding down the IT consulting business he founded 22 years ago in favor of returning to the stage. He is the president of Colonial Players and is directing, acting, and doing lighting design at CP, ASGT, Silver Spring Stage, and Thunderous Productions.

Class of 1971 Tara Lumpkin ’71 and her husband, Phillip Gibbs, continue to live in the small mountain community of Taos, New Mexico, where they’ve resided for the past 36 years. Tara runs an award-winning anthropological and environmental media nonprofit, VoicesforBiodiversity.org, which she founded in 2009. The organization’s mission is to reduce the sixth extinction of species by sharing people’s stories from around the world as they try to save wildlife and nature. Tara

continues to ski but less so, due to the climate crisis and lack of snow.

She also continues to irrigate their two acres, formerly of alfalfa, but now filled with prairie dogs, as they attempt to grow drylands pasture mix. The drought is intense this year.

Tara hopes to hike this summer, but Tara Lumpkin ’71 the forests will probably close due to fire danger. Tara and her husband rarely travel due to the carbon footprint. Tara shares, “I guess we’re serious environmentalists, but we were lucky to spend years living overseas off and on when we did development and aid work. Of course, now USAID has been shuttered, another loss. Wishing all my classmates a hearty hello! If you come to Taos, look me up.”

His wife, Susan, finally retired, and they recently welcomed their third grandson to the family. Murray and Susan are having fun mixing in a little bit of travel with visits to their family in Rhode Island and Ohio.

He is now COO of the 2027 FIVB Women’s World Cup to be played next summer in the U.S. and Canada. He trades time between Baltimore and New York. Sandy’s daughter, Kendall (27), works in finance for Tower Research Group, a New Yorkbased hedge fund. His son, Alex (24), works in commercial real estate for Brookfield Properties in New York.

Class of 1976 The biggest celebration and highpoint of the past year for Jamey Hebb ’76 was the birth of his grandson, Henry, in late May 2025, courtesy of his daughter, Lucy Hebb Self ’07 and son-in-law Blake. Jamey shares, “He’s a blessing to our entire family and all boy. I trust many of my classmates are experiencing similar joy.” Jamey’s son Jack graduated from Hereford High School a few days after his nephew was born, and this past spring, his youngest son, Jamey, did the same. Jamey ’76 shares, “The passage of time accelerates as I grow older, that’s for sure.” He and his sons live in bucolic Freeland, Maryland, and enjoy the peace and quiet of life in the country. He still works in the fixed operations side of the automotive business. Jamey served his third term on the Calvert Alumni Association Board of Governors, and gets back to Tuscany Road regularly. Jamey writes, “I hope all of you and your families are well, and that we cross paths soon.

Wallace Simpson ’76 retired in January 2026. After 27 years at Microsoft, Amazon, tech startup ServiceNow, and Snowflake, he can truthfully say he will never have to be on an early-morning Zoom call talking nerdy tech stuff. This leaves more time for fun activities like film production, eagle photography, and hanging out by the lake literally doing nothing. Wallace has worked on more than 20 short films as writer, producer, composer, and even actor (don’t ask), and his projects have screened at hundreds of festivals around the world. Right now, he is working on a sci-fi web series, a family drama, an action comedy, and his first full-length feature film. Wallace is considering hosting a film screening of some of his better projects in Baltimore, so reach out to him if you’re interested! His family is doing great as well.

Wallace’s wife graduates with her master’s degree in theology this summer, and his daughter completed her master’s degree last fall. Wallace’s son works as a design architect at a leading high end home builder in the Seattle area and hopes to move to Oregon or California in the next few years. Wallace welcomes visitors to the Seattle area and loves to play tour guide. He gets back to Baltimore every few years and shares, “I am still in search of the best Maryland crab cake! Let me know your favorite, and I will add it to the tasting tour next time I am in town.”

Class of 1977 It was an exciting spring for Julia Buchanan Salovaara ’77 and her family. Her daughter, Ellen Salovaara ’18, graduated from Bowdoin College and will move to San Francisco to work for two years in a law firm as a paralegal while she considers whether to apply to law school. Julie’s son, Jay Salovaara ’22 graduated from Gilman School and

will head to Amherst College in the fall. Before their nest empties out, the family will take a trip to Alaska to celebrate the graduations. Julie shares, “Alaska has been on my bucket list for a long time, and I’m excited to have a good excuse to finally make it happen.”

Class of 1981 Matt Wyskiel ’81 and Lucy Randolph Liddell ’81 share: “About 20 members of the Calvert Class of 1981 gathered for their 45th Reunion at Lucy’s house in the evening of April 11.

Earlier in the day, classmates David Clapp ’81, Liam Culman ’81, Clark Wight ’81, and Matt Wyskiel ’81 enjoyed playing a round of golf at The Elkridge Club. Clark, who in younger days didn’t play much golf, stated that he hadn’t played golf at Elkridge in about 30 years, and then to the surprise of the rest of the foursome, he proceeded to crush a drive straight down the fairway; one of many excellent shots he hit on the day. Perhaps Clark, as president of The St. Paul’s Schools, is secretly playing more golf these days. In the early evening, upon exiting their car at Lucy’s house, the golf crew immediately saw Clemmie Miller ’81 and Emily Wilson Murphy ’81, who had crossed the Bay Bridge to attend the gathering.

The six classmates exchanged big smiles and hugs, and headed to the back porch at Lucy’s house where many other ’81ers, such as Sarah Neer Breck ’81, Katie Brennan ’81, Catherine Thomas Burnett ’81, Elisabeth Dahl ’81, Eric Harlan ’81, D.B. Hebb ’81, Tracey Lankford ’81, Lisa Schapiro ’81, Carolyn Ewing Woods ’81, (and, of course, Lucy) were already telling old and new stories and having lots of laughs. Earlier, Nancy Barnes ’81 arrived to join the fun. All classmates enjoyed catching-up with each other, and the time was enhanced by some great old pictures of Calvert times as well as their graduation program, which had been preserved in nearly mint condition. As the evening wound down, everybody was sad to leave, and many wished that they could make an ’81 gathering an annual event!”

Tracey Lankford ’81 is “feeling truly blessed” to step into the role of president of the Calvert Alumni Board for 20262027 and says it’s especially meaningful that she will serve alongside her sister, Jennifer Lankford Brunner ’85, who was elected as a new member of the Alumni Board. Her beloved niece, Seventh Age student Amelia Brunner ’34, delights in every day spent at Calvert learning, growing and making friends for life. Tracey says she is sincerely grateful for the incredible educational foundation which grew alongside her own cherished lifelong friendships. She shares, “With a circuitous career path and having lived outside of Maryland most of my adult life, as I’ve grown older I more fully recognize the impact of my Calvert years. I try to honor the Calvert legacy everyday, and look forward to serving our wide alumni community. Go Calvert!”

She also spends quite a bit of time in Maine. In fact, last summer, at a Portland Sea Dogs game, Lucy and her family, including sons Davis Liddell ’15 and Matt Liddell ’17 ran into former Calvert teacher Mr. Shep. Lucy hosted her 45th reunion and shares, “Our class had an amazing reunion in April 2026, and it was so much fun catching up with everyone! Now the countdown begins until our 50th, but I don’t think we should wait five years to get together again!”

Emily Wilson Murphy ’81 lives in Chestertown, Maryland, with her two children, both of whom will be in college next year, and her black Labrador retriever, Poppy! She has been the executive director of Horizons of Kent and Queen Anne’s for the past four years. Horizons of Kent and Queen Anne’s, as one of the original affiliates of Horizons National, operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a comprehensive six-week, tuition-free, summer academic and enrichment program. This initiative specifically serves underresourced students in Pre-K through eighth grade residing in Kent and Queen Anne’s counties on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

The students in these communities face limited options for engaging in productive and enriching activities during the summer months. Horizons aims to address this opportunity gap by focusing on its mission: reducing summer learning loss—or the “summer slide”—which perpetuates the cycle of poverty. Horizons of Kent and Queen Anne’s operates out of three sites, The Kent School in Chestertown, The Gunston School in Centreville, and Washington College. Beth Fenwick Garner ’85 has reconnected with her equestrian roots and started eventing, something she never did as a child. She loves the jumping, but is less in love with the dressage! Lately, she has been thinking a lot about the Calvert planetarium. Beth shares, “The stars and their constellations where I live (outside of Oxford in England) are so bright, and I remember first learning about them at Calvert. What an opportunity!”

Sarah Oglesby Slomkowski ’91 is enjoying the busy season of life with a full house! She is grateful for health and family, although she is the last Oglesby remaining in Baltimore.

Sarah has fun running into Calvert alums on the sidelines as she coaches middle school sports. She enjoys her job as the high school placement coordinator at St. James Academy in Monkton. Her three kids, Davey (12), Healey (9), and Joey (8), are there too, just like when her mom worked at Calvert when she was growing up. Go, Canaries!

Juliana Keyser Harris ’85 has moved to Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Charlotte Harris ’24 is enjoying Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, where she is a member of the crew team and continues acting in musicals and plays.

Skylar Harris ’17 graduated from Colgate University in May. Class of 1987 Trey Winstead ’87 has been in touch with classmates Neddy Dukehart ’87, Betsey Swingle Hobelmann ’87, Peter McGill ’87, Ted Russell ’87, Rob Schapiro ’87, Matt Tucker ’87, and other classmates who are all doing very well. Trey traveled to New Orleans for jazz fest this year. His company, TW Consulting, had a good year, and if anyone needs help with permitting, zoning or planning, please get in touch! Trey’s nephew, Tucker Winstead ’26, graduated from Calvert in June. He gave a fantastic Eighth Grade speech about baseball, positive thinking, humbleness, and sticking with practice and improving. Trey shares, “Looking forward to our 2027 class reunion next year and hope Mr. Hardesty (who opened my 50th birthday party) will be attending/ playing/singing. Hope everyone who can make it to next years’ reunion will do so, and look forward to seeing y’all there!”

Marietta Skeen ’96 shares that she is well planted in Western Massachusetts, living in a quaint village on a lazy river. She is rounding out 15 years of private practice as a somatic psychotherapist and teaching meditation and embodiment to folks near and far. Marietta and partner Ky hope to start hosting growth retreats on their land this fall. Other sweet developments include her sidewalk flower stand and a vintage pop-up, Golden Hour, which she curates for local events. Marietta reports, “Of course, I am still rocking a #2 pencil and cursive daily!”

Class of 1998 Katharine Fox Castro ’98 still lives in Baltimore. After seven years in the beer wholesaling business, she just started a new role as CFO of Baltimore Tank Lines, a growing fuel and chemical hauler. She is super excited for the new role and to help grow the business. Katharine’s daughter, Zoe Castro ’29, loves Calvert and keeps her mom busy with lacrosse and basketball, and Katharine loves coaching Zoe’s lacrosse team.

Katharine’s stepdaughter, Stella, is about to start her senior year at Northeastern as a design major. Their house is full of love and fur with their three dogs and three cats!

Class of 1999 Elizabeth Paal Goss ’99 is a proud Calvert parent. Her oldest, Madi Goss ’35, is in Fifth Age, and her twins, Ford and Charlotte, attend Kiddie Calvert. Elizabeth shares that life is a whirlwind with three kids five years old and under, a mischievous pug puppy, and running her financial planning business, but “we’re happy and grateful.”

Meredith Miller Kimtis ’99 is in her fifth year working at Grace Preschool. Her two children attended preschool there, and now her son, Chase Kimtis ’33, is entering Eighth Age at Calvert! Meredith shares, “It has been so special to be back in the building and reconnect with alumni. The traditions are still strong, and it is amazing to see all the new Meredith Miller Kimtis ’99 buildings and developments the school has made to make Calvert an excellent foundation for a child’s educational journey!”

Class of 2000 Ned Worthington ’00 works as a financial advisor/portfolio manager for Harbor Investment Advisory in the Baltimore area and keeps busy with his wife, Katlyn Scarlett, and 19-month-old daughter, Ellett. He enjoys co-chairing the Grand National Steeplechase each April, as well as participating in local land preservation and equestrian causes.

Class of 2011 Scott Finney ’11 passed the South Carolina Bar in the summer of 2025 and works for the firm of Clawson and Staubes in Greenville, South Carolina.

Anna Hart ’11 got married in Baltimore on April 11!

Class of 2012 Edward Burchell ’12 and his wife, Allison, were married on November 15 in Annapolis, Maryland, where the couple now resides. The celebration was made even more special with several Calvert alumni in attendance to help them celebrate.

After graduating from Fairfield University, Edward fulfilled a longtime goal of entering into public service, serving in the Hogan Administration as a special assistant to the Governor and later as director of operations for the Governor’s U.S. Senate campaign. He currently serves as chief of staff at The Hogan Group. Outside of the office, Edward remains an avid golfer and looks forward to connecting with fellow alumni in the Annapolis area.

Class of 2004 Margaret Comer ’04 moved to Warsaw, Poland in 2025, after having lived in England, Estonia, and England (again) since 2015. She works as a researcher in the Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Warsaw. Currently, she is working on a project comparing the development of memory of Soviet repressions in different places, mostly focusing on memorial sites in Poland and Kazakhstan. In her spare time, she practices yoga and Pilates, watches reality TV, reads, and travels. She shares her apartment with her twin orange cats, Jeff and Cyrus.

Class of 2017 Jace Hartman ’17 completed flight school in August 2025, and he is now a certified flight instructor at Harford County Airport.

He is currently building flight hours while helping students achieve their aviation goals, from their first solo to advanced ratings. Jace plans to pursue opportunities in both private and military aviation. Alongside instructing, he is finishing his bachelor’s degree in aviation through Liberty University.

Class of 2016 Eva Finney ’16 lives in Manhattan and works in the municipal bonds division of Truist Bank. In November, she ran the NYC marathon (her first) in 3:29:15 and recently completed the Brooklyn half marathon in 1:31:50.

Brendan Shelley ’16 recently married the love of his life, Kaytlyn Bunting Shelley, a native Texan and a film producer and director. He graduated from the SMU Master’s in Accounting program last May as valedictorian and received the TXCPA Accounting Excellence Award. After passing all four sections of the CPA exam, Brendan now works Brendan Shelley ’16 at KPMG in Dallas in the International Tax practice.

In his free time, he enjoys going to the movies with friends, playing board games (especially Catan), playing soccer, and watching baseball games. Go, Phillies!

Class of 2019 Isabelle Peacock ’19 loves her time at The Ohio State University. She is excited for her summer internship in Newport Beach, California! Isabelle hopes to do morning yoga at the beach, take many walks on the pier, and make many friends.

Class of 2021 Ben Lacombe ’21 has been getting used to life abroad in his first year of college at the University of Exeter in the UK! He is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in geography, and he has loved getting to learn from and work with leading researchers in climate science, mobility studies, and more. Ben takes opportunities to travel throughout the UK’s craggy southwest. During his Easter break, he traveled across Central Europe by rail. Ben shares, “Much love to everyone at Calvert!”

Class of 2022 James Hobelmann ’22 completed the New York City Marathon with his dad, Greg, in November. This was his second NYC Marathon after running in 2023. James will attend Wake Forest University in the fall, majoring in business and enterprise management.
