Dear Calvert Hall Family and Friends, I am extremely excited to celebrate with you tonight as we gather (in-person!) for Calvert Hall’s Gala 2023: Onward, and Alumni Hall of Fame induction. On behalf of the Christian Brothers, Board of Trustees, faculty, staff and students, I thank you for sharing in the brotherhood that defines and makes The Hall what it is today. We take great pride as we honor our distinguished alumni and their families, as well as our current and future students. We are especially pleased to induct the Alumni Hall of Fame Class of 2023. Many Hall of Fame members are present tonight as we add six new inductees: Mr. James M. Burke ‘53, Dr. Charles T. LoPresto, Ph.D. ‘65, Mr. Michael J. Keelty ‘70, Mr. Joseph J. Hirsch ‘72, Mr. John K. Johnson ‘81, and Mr. Lee S. Martin ‘83. These men have led distinctive careers and are inspirations to the men of intellect, men of faith, and men of integrity, attending Calvert Hall. We are proud to tell their stories tonight. Calvert Hall continues to be a school dedicated to recognizing the unique potential of every student through a rigorous academic curriculum, a multitude of co-curricular activities, and elite athletic programs. Since 1845, Calvert Hall has enjoyed this proud tradition of outstanding education steeped in the Catholic Lasallian values that come to us from founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle. The zeal and dedication of our Christian Brothers and lay partners have made the difference in the lives of many young men. 2023 Hall of Fame Inductees

Retired Director of Management Information Systems Procter & Gamble (Noxell Corp) James M. Burke ’53 was born and raised in East Baltimore, attended The Shrine of the Little Flower Elementary School and then began his adventure at CHC as a fouryear Honor Roll student, graduating with Highest Honors. Jim was involved in the Bowling Club and an active member of student council, as class officer of his senior class. He was awarded a scholarship to The Johns Hopkins University, majoring and earning a degree in Industrial Engineering. At the beginning of his senior year at Hopkins, he married his high school sweetheart, Maria. During their 66 years of marriage, Jim and Maria were blessed with four wonderful children, Mary Lee, Terri, Nancy, and Michael ’76, now raising families of their own. After graduating from Hopkins in 1957, Jim was hired by IBM and received extensive technical training for computer equipment. His work experience as a systems technician included sales support and teaching numerous customer classes at the Winston-Salem, North Carolina branch office. Burke left IBM to accept a position in the Baltimore City Department of Finance to plan, direct, and convert the city’s accounting systems to a new, updated computer operation in the 1960’s. Under his direction, Baltimore City installed their first of several computer systems.

as well as coordinating computer activities at other Noxell locations across the country. At Noxell, Burke was instrumental in overseeing the growth and direction of advanced computer technology for several new generations of computer systems. Noxell Corp was purchased by Procter and Gamble in 1989. Burke remained Information Services Director until his early retirement from P&G in 1992. Since his retirement, Burke spends much of his time hosting and attending family gatherings, duckpin bowling in a league (currently in last place), fishing, golfing, participating in various church activities, and making frequent visits to Calvert Hall. The Burke family has a long history with The Hall, dating back to 1937, when uncle John P. Burke, the first of five generations, graduated. The most recent member of the Burke family, Carson J. Ford, graduated in 2022 as a McMullen Program Scholar, and is currently attending Clemson University. In addition to great-grandson Carson, other Burke family graduates of Calvert Hall include: late brother, Paul ’51; brother, Donald ’58; son, J. Michael ’76; son-in-law, Henry J. Strohminger III ’78; grandsons, Corey P. Ford ’06 and Joseph T. Filsinger ’16; plus many other cousins, nephews, and greatnephews. Jim and Maria also have two additional grandchildren and two other great-grandchildren.

After 13 years with Baltimore City, Jim took a job with The Noxell Corporation as Director of Management Information Systems. Burke was responsible for all routine computer operations and planning functions,

Associate Professor of Psychology Loyola University Maryland A life-long educator and now associate professor Emeritus in psychology, Dr. Charles T. LoPresto ’65 taught for more than 30 years at Loyola University Maryland and at Calvert Hall from 1969-1980, where he served for a time as Science Department Chair. During his tenure at Loyola, he was a sought-after professor whose classes were often oversubscribed. He loved interacting with and mentoring students for which he received the student-awarded AFFIRM Award in 2012. He was also an outspoken advocate for LGBT+ issues, both on campus and in his clinical practice. As a result of his advocacy work, he was invited to appear as a featured guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show in May 1997. Charles made the honor roll each semester during his Calvert Hall career from 1961-1965. He was a four-year member of the Student Council and served as his homeroom representative each year. He was a member of the Key Club (community service), Cardinal and Gold (yearbook), Vista (student magazine), Benilde Club (religious devotion), and a regular performer in CHC theatrical productions. He was also a two-time national champion in Forensics (Speech & Debate). Charles earned his undergraduate degree in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Italian from LaSalle University, his Master’s in Clinical Psychology from Loyola University Maryland, and his Ph.D. in Personality Psychology with a minor in Clinical Neuropsychology from Howard University. He received his license in clinical psychology in 1989 and

maintained a private practice in Towson for 33 years, often working with young men from CHC and their families. In 1992, he was named Loyola’s Harry W. Rodgers III Distinguished Teacher of the Year, an award which he considers one of the greatest honors of his life, along with his induction tonight into Calvert Hall’s Alumni Hall of Fame. Charles has published original research in several prominent psychology journals and textbooks, and in 2005 he received Loyola’s prestigious Educator for Life Award. Currently spending most days with Colleen, his beautiful bride of 53 years, in Rehoboth Beach, Charles enjoys everything Italian, traveling, entertaining friends, cooking, and listening to music. His two terrific sons, Patrick (50) and Kevin (49, deceased), attended Calvert Hall and graduated in 1990 and 1991, respectively. He has three beautiful granddaughters—Brianna (25), Isabella (19), and Malena (14), and two incredible great-grandchildren—Christopher (2) and Lilly (6 months). In November 2022, Charles and Colleen met with Mr. Joe Baker and Br. John Kane, FSC to establish the Kevin LoPresto ’91 Memorial Grant. By so doing, they continue to honor the memory of their son and enable other deserving young men to experience the exceptional education that is the cornerstone of Calvert Hall. They are profoundly grateful to all contributors.

Michael J. Keelty ’70

2023 Hall of Fame Inductees

President The Keelty Company Michael J. Keelty ’70 is a third-generation Baltimorean, who has enjoyed a successful and fulfilling career in the building business. He grew up as one of eight rollicking siblings. Like their father, all five Keelty boys attended and graduated from Calvert Hall. A Marylander through and through, Michael (and his siblings) all grew up playing baseball, working around Baltimore, frolicking in Ocean City, where the family had a summer house, sailing around Gibson Island, going to Colts games, and getting into trouble with each other. Michael went to Mount Washington Country School and then Calvert Hall College, a school he still loves and is deeply committed to. He has been a Trustee, served on the Answer The Call capital campaign to preserve “Keelty Hall” on campus, and has sponsored several scholarships at The Hall. Michael graduated from Mount Saint Mary’s College in Emmitsburg, Maryland (his father’s Alma Mater.) After college, he lived in Annapolis for several years, forging his own way in the real estate industry with Chas. H. Steffey, Inc. He then started his own successful home-building company, before joining the family business. A family of builders, Michael joined his father, James, Jr., AFSC ’29, his uncle, Joe, and his brother, James III ’60, in growing The James Keelty Company. Over the years, the Keelty Company has literally helped shape the Baltimore area, developing neighborhoods like Mays Chapel, Rodger’s Forge, Edmonson Village, and many more. They have also constructed or contributed to

the construction of various major churches, schools, and hospitals in Baltimore and beyond. In addition to his work at the Keelty Co. for over 45 years, Michael has built houses for charity, participated in, and headed up many trade associations, including serving on the Board of The Homebuilders Association of Maryland. He has also been involved in many political campaigns throughout Maryland, including serving as a member of Governor Larry Hogan’s Re-election Task Force. He is particularly committed to organizations and programs focused around creating and/or improving opportunity for those who may lack access or means to education and civic services. Accordingly, he has served as a board member of the Child Abuse Prevention Center (now known as the Family Tree), Bon Secours Hospital, and Calvert Hall College. Michael is married to Julia Keelty, and has three daughters, Caroline, Carrie, and Annabel. He has two sons-in-law, Bryan and Tom, and four granddaughters. When he’s not spending time with his family, he golfs, swims, boats, travels, reads, and thinks about retiring.

Joseph J. Hirsch ’72

2023 Hall of Fame Inductees

Retired Vice President Hirsch Electric, Inc. A product of Calvert Hall’s 1972 graduating class, Joseph J. Hirsch took a different career path than most of his classmates. He entered into a four-year electrical apprenticeship program, attending school at night and working in the trade during the day. After seven years of training, Joe took and passed the master’s test to become the youngest master electrician at that time. In 1979, Joe ventured into business and established Joseph J. Hirsch, Inc. In 2001, his brother, Tom ’73, joined his company and renamed the organization Hirsch Electric, LLC., which they grew to a team of approximately 200 employees. Joe retired in 2016 and Tom in 2022. Today, the business is operated by Joe’s nephews, John ’05 and Adam ’07, along with three additional owners.

Joe was an active member of include Maryland State Board of Electrical Examiners, American Subcontractors Association, and The Associated Builders and Contractors. In addition to giving back to the community through Board service, Joe and Hirsch Electric have contributed to numerous Maryland charities, including building and operating a recovery house, which supports individuals in the construction trades who struggle with alcoholism and addiction. As they say, behind every good man is a good woman: and that’s Mary Hirsch, who is Joe’s wife of 25 years. Recently, through Mary and Joe’s generosity, major renovations to the lobby of the Marion Burk Knott Fine Arts Center have been completed, and in recognition the lobby has been named the Mary & Joseph ’72 Hirsch Lobby. They have no children and now live in Florida, where they are avid golfers and enjoying retirement!

During Joe’s career, he shared his extensive construction knowledge while serving on the Calvert Hall Board of Trustees and chairing the Board’s Facilities Committee from 2013-2019. Hirsch Electric was instrumental in the construction of George Young Hall, the renovation of Keelty Hall, and installation of The John G. Noppinger, Jr. ’64 Commons. Other boards that

Senior Director of Sales and Marketing Arizona Beverages Snacks Division John K. Johnson ’81 is currently a twoterm appointed Board of Trustees member at Union College in Schenectady, NY as an alumni trustee. He is the first African American to be elected by the Union College Alumni community for this position. John graduated from Union College in 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Managerial Economics. While attending Union, John was a four-year starter on the football team from 1981-1984 seasons; in which the team was a 1983 NCAA Championship finalist and 1984 NCAA Semi-Finalist participant. John won several ECAC Player of the Week honors, including the Ralph H. Rue MVP Award. He is the 7th all-time leading rusher and 6th all-time in rushing touchdowns at Union. In addition, John lettered in Track and Field his freshman year. John is one of eight founding fathers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. at Union College. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. originated in 1906 at Cornell University. John and his fraternity brothers founded the Pi Pi Chapter on May 29, 1983. John held the positions of vice president and president his junior and senior years, respectively. John’s professional career started in sales with Nestle Foods, USA. He then spent 16 years at Mars, Inc., where he excelled in field and international sales, worked with several cross-functional teams, and held several leadership positions. He later went to Acosta Sales and Marketing as the senior director of client development. John is currently the Senior Director of Sales & Marketing at Arizona Beverages, responsible for managing the Arizona Snack Foods Division.

John is married to Ramona A. Stills-Johnson. Ramona is a graduate of Skidmore College, class of 1985 and Albany University, class of 1987. Ramona is a Psychological Therapist in Smithtown, NY, where they reside. Their son, John K. Johnson II, is a graduate of Union College 2010 and Quinnipiac University 2014. John K. Johnson II was a two-sport athlete, playing football and baseball at Union College. John was an Emmy Award winner while at MLB Network, and is currently a sports anchor at WXII Channel 12 News in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. John, his wife Margaret, and son Tyus reside in North Carolina. Their daughter Jasmine T. Johnson is a graduate of Temple University 2015 and Stonybrook University 2017. Jasmine is a two-time All-American and two-time ECAC Floor Exercise Champion for Temple University in women’s gymnastics. Jasmine is the Strength and Conditioning Coach at Boston University. At Calvert Hall, John was a four-year letterman in football. He was the first freshman in school history to make the varsity football team. He played on the first undefeated (11-0) and MSA Championship team. John participated in three MSA title games. Calvert Hall won two of the three title games. During his career, John was selected to three All-Metro Teams and was nominated for the Baltimore Sun Prep Athlete of the Year in 1980. He also played JV and Varsity lacrosse at The Hall. John is a former Calvert Hall College High School Board of Trustees member serving from 2010-2016. In addition, John has been active in coaching and has held several positions on various boards for youth sports teams in his community.

Lee S. Martin ’83

2023 Hall of Fame Inductees

Our Daily Bread Employment Center Program Director Catholic Charities of Baltimore

Lee S. Martin ’83 is a prestigious human services leader who has dedicated more than a decade of his life helping the citizens of Baltimore achieve independence through housing, employment, and various forms of counseling. As a student at The Hall, he was elected President of the Black Awareness Club (BAC). Lee won the Optimist International Oratorical contest, as a member of Conclave, the speech and debate club. He went on to graduate and receive certifications from the Broadcasting Institute of Maryland, Howard University, and Cornell University.

Resource Center (WHRC), a Baltimore City low-barrier shelter that serves nearly 300 people a night. A two-time cancer survivor and health advocate who is well-respected throughout the Baltimore community, he is known for being a compassionate, mission-driven leader. Lee is a 2017 recipient of the Catholic Charities Mission in Action Award. This is a recognition which is given to staff who consistently embody the agency’s mission to be inspired by the gospel mandates to love, serve, and teach, and provide care and services to improve the lives of Marylanders in need. The proud Baltimore native is a dedicated father of two daughters, Amber and Cienna, and brother of Charles Vernon (Vern) Martin, Jr. ’79.

Lee currently serves as director of Catholic Charities’ Our Daily Bread Employment Center (ODBEC), where he leads his team in providing daily breakfast, lunches, legal services, health care, job counseling and training, employment opportunities, and government benefits to Marylanders in need. Before joining Our Daily Bread Employment Center, Lee held the title of director of Catholic Charities’ Weinberg Housing
