Calvary Church welcomes people of all abilities. Special accommodations including reserved seating and wheelchair assistance are available. Inclusive worship is encouraged for all - in the Sanctuary with additional spaces available for those with sensory sensitivities. Family Tree | Room 251-253 | A medium sized multi-generational sermon discussion class focused on doing life together as we pray for one another and share what God is teaching us through the Sunday sermons.

Horizons | Room 252-254 | A new class for singles and couples in their 20’s-40’s focused on community and spiritual growth. Come help us grow and shape this class while discussing the sermon each week. Children are welcome as needed.

Check-in : All children need to receive their nametags at the check-in area at the bottom of the stairs, then be escorted by a parent or guardian to the room number printed on their name tag.
Inclusion is encouraged for children of varied abilities, K – 4th grade. If extra support is needed, an individualized Care Plan can be developed alongside our facilitator, Pamela Cook, (pcook@ calvarygr.org).
Holiday Sundays: April 5 (Easter), May 25 (Memorial Day Weekend). On these Sundays, only nursery & preschool are available in Calvary Kids. We encourage families to worship together in the Sanctuary on these days.

Last Meeting Before Summer - May 17
At HSM, our goal is to help students become ROOTED in a personal relationship with Jesus—so they can grow full of love, walk in truth, engage in meaningful community, and live fruitful lives wherever they go (Colossians 2:6–7, Philippians 1:9–11).
We’re all about growing deeper in faith and having a ton of FUN along the way. Every Sunday night, we come together to play games, worship, hear a teaching, and have real conversations in small groups. After that, stick around for Overtime—an extra hangout time until 9:30pm to relax, connect, and build friendships.

The last Wednesday Night of the semester is May 13. There is no programming on Wednesdays, April 1 (Holy Week) and April 8 (Spring Break).
A hearty, healthy meal featuring a rotating entree, pizza or chicken nuggets, and a salad bar. More than just solving the equation of what you’ll have for dinner on a busy weeknight, WFD is a lowstakes opportunity to gather around the table with your church friends. It’s a casual time for community that you don’t have to organize or plan - just show up! Every week is a chance to meet someone new or deepen an existing relationship.

Child Dedication

On May 17, parents have the opportunity to commit their children to the Lord at our Child Dedication services. Family members and friends are welcome to join in the celebration and show their support. If you would like to dedicate your child(ren), registration is required.
Parents will also attend a breakfast meeting the day prior, to discuss the significance and importance of child dedication. Register online at calvarygr.org/dedication.

Partnering with our friends at the West Michigan Friendship Center, we will have the opportunity to serve a meal and love on our Muslim neighbors here in West Michigan. There is a mandatory training with Joe Aboosh, the program director at the center, for anyone who hasn’t served yet. The date of this training is April 12 at 12:30 om Room 108. In our final men’s breakfast of the ministry year, we will be covering the important topics of parenting and leaving a legacy. David was known for many things, but his role as a father is often not talked about. His own son tried to kill him and take his kingdom! Men’s Serving Day
May 15-16 | Camp Harvest, Newaygo
It’s time to roll up our sleeves and get to work! This year we are partnering with Renew Crew and Camp Harvest in Newaygo, MI to help them with some spring cleanup. This one will be fun! We will head up Friday evening for a night of BBQ, fellowship, and fun-no work scheduled Friday night, just time to hang out and enjoy being together! On Saturday we will be doing some landscaping and maintenance for the camp to get ready for a full summer of youth camps.
There are two ways to participate: Join us Friday overnight or come up Saturday morning just for the service day.

Father-Son Camping Trip

Virtual Fishing Tournament
June 12-14
It’s time for our seventh annual Virtual Fishing Tournament! Take advantage of a great opportunity to spend time with loved ones on the water. Three fish categories with a first, second and third place prize. Sign up for the full details. There will also be other prizes for first fish caught, best picture, and other random prizes just for fun! Just snap a picture of you and your fish with a measuring tape or scale to enter. Come and be encouraged to walk in the purpose, presence, pleasure and peace of God. Believing this is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Our time will be filled with the teaching from Pastor Bob Funk, Evangelical Free Church, worship, fellowship, and delicious food. There will be transportation available from Calvary. Get some great exercise and fellowship and on Thursdays throughout the summer. The round-trip bike rides will average between18-24 mile and will stop mid-way for brunch. Contact Carla for a list of the scheduled rides. It will be your personal choice to ride in unfavorable weather conditions.

This Nashville based group celebrates 15 years of faith-based ministry, promoting changed lives and healed hearts. Join us for an optional van ride from Calvary, dinner at Culvers and concert. R.S.V.P to Carla by June 11 if you plan to join us at any point in the evening. Bring your own lawn chair. The cost of dinner is your own and the free will offering.

For the Peace and Prosperity of the City
Throughout the Abundance series on 1st, 2nd and 3rd John, God has been revealing the depth of his love for us and encouraging us to love others the same way. One way we can respond is by learning about the challenges others in our city face. We asked our friend, Pastor Artie Lindsay, to share about a new initiative he is involved with to bless and encourage our local community.
When the prophet Jeremiah wrote to God’s people living in exile, he gave them a surprising command: “Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you… Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” (Jeremiah 29:7). Rather than withdrawing from the city around them, God called His people to pray for it, serve it, and contribute to its flourishing. That same calling is before us today in Grand Rapids.
Just a few miles from Calvary Church lies the Southtown community, particularly the 49507 zip code area on the southeast side of the city. Nearly 40,000 people call this home. It is a vibrant, diverse community rich with culture, strong families and resilient neighbors. While the area has experienced decades of economic disinvestment, Southtown is not defined by its challenges. It is filled with gifts, creativity and people who care deeply about their community.
Across Grand Rapids leaders from business, non-profit, education, government and faith communities are coming together through a citywide effort called Thrive and Prosper, a movement committed to connecting and facilitating networks of changemakers on the ground with networks of resources to drive generational impact. Within this larger effort, The Faith Leaders workstream has launched what we call a Gospel Ecosystem, a network of churches and partners rooted in the good news of Jesus and committed to the flourishing of our neighbors. Rather than working in isolation, congregations, businesses and community partners are aligning their efforts so that together we reflect the vision of God’s kingdom in the life of our city.
And we are already seeing signs of what is possible. Churches and community partners help families move toward home ownership. Leaders are exploring ways to support entrepreneurship and expand economic opportunities. Neighbors are investing in beautification projects and public art that celebrate the stories and cultural heritage of
Southtown. These efforts offer glimpses of what can happen when people come together around a shared vision for the common good.
The Gospel Ecosystem reminds us that transformation rarely happens through one program alone. It happens when the people of God see themselves as participants in God’s redemptive work in the world.
Imagine what could happen if believers across our city embraced that calling. Some may mentor emerging entrepreneurs. Others may volunteer their skills, pray for neighborhood leaders, coordinate a group for a neighborhood specific project, or build relationships with families in Southtown. Business leaders can create opportunities for employment, and educators can help shape pathways for young people. Each of us has a role to play.
The Gospel Ecosystem is not simply a strategy; it is an invitation for the body of Christ to live out the Gospel in the life of the city. And there is a place for you in it.

One way we can grow in our love for others is to remind ourselves of how the church in the past has responded to the needs of people, rejoicing with those who rejoice and mourning with those who mourn (Romans 12:15). In this vein, we invite you to a meaningful evening as we explore the deep significance of America’s newest federal holiday through a special screening of the documentary Juneteenth: Faith and Freedom , featuring Pastor Rasool Berry.
In this powerful film, you’ll discover how Scripture shaped the faith of enslaved people, visit the church where America’s first Juneteenth celebration took place, and learn why newly liberated men and women credited God for their freedom.
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It marks the day in June 1865—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation—when federal troops arrived in Galveston to ensure enslaved people were finally freed.
For the past several years, Calvary has been prayerfully asking the Lord to lead us in the pursuit of racial unity. One way we grow on this journey is by listening, learning, and reflecting together. Our hope is to create space for shared experiences that lead to greater understanding and transformation.
During this evening, we will celebrate the power of God and reflect on how He sustained His people through the realities of slavery, racial oppression, and the hope and light of freedom.
Following the documentary, there will be a Q&A and panel discussion with Pastor Rasool Berry and community leaders to help us process the film and its message together.

7th/8th Grade Student Ministry
I have heard it said that if you feel like Calvary Church is too big, then volunteer to serve somewhere in the church and watch how it becomes smaller. Many years ago, I signed up to be a leader in the 7th/8th grade ministry. I had little to no training working with middle schoolers, but Rodney Velting put my mind at ease and told me just to “love on these kids”. Those words rang as an anthem for me throughout my years in the 7th/8th grade ministry. In my service, I have had the opportunity to pray over students, go on multiple mission trips and retreats, participate in fun activities, prepare teachings, and meet many great students and families. It is truly a blessing to be a part of this challenging transitional time in their lives and love on these kids. I encourage you to take that step out in faith and find an area within Calvary to serve. You will experience God in many amazing ways!
In my years of attending Calvary Church, it has been my privilege to volunteer for a variety of roles, each of which I have found to be both challenging and, ultimately, rewarding. During my time as an elder I thoroughly enjoyed praying for both the sick as well as those with relational or emotional needs. Not only did we demonstrate Christ’s love, but we also enjoyed the sweet presence of God during our time of prayer.
I have also served in a small group of men who teach our adult Sunday School class. It requires preparation, but God is faithful and I sense him using my efforts to touch the hearts and lives of fellow class members, which gives me great joy. Additionally, God has allowed me to lead a group of eight men at Calvary in a weekly time of Bible study, fellowship and prayer. I love how vulnerable and real we consistently are with each other. We need brothers and sisters in Christ to help us remain accountable in our faith as we all lovingly walk with each other.
So why should any of us volunteer? Because as we pour out our time, talent and/or treasure on others, we get back far more than we give out! We are truly blessed!
Working with students for many years has been one of the greatest blessings in my life. I show up thinking I am there to pour into students, but somehow, I always leave feeling encouraged, challenged, and filled up in return. Whether I am giggling with middle school girls on a retreat, sitting beside them when they are hurting, serving alongside teens on mission trips, or standing worshiping with high school students as they grow deeper in their faith, each moment has marked me.

I recently watched our students lead “Student Takeover Night”, and I left overwhelmed with gratitude. Their passion for worship, their hunger for the Word, and their boldness in inviting friends to know Jesus stirred my heart deeply. Serving them has strengthened my faith and reminded me that when we pour ourselves out for others, God faithfully pours His blessings back into us.

A Living Parable of Love by Kris Treiber
The Apostle John gives us one of the most intimate moments in Jesus‘s earthly ministry. The crowds are gone. The public signs have ceased. Jesus gathers his disciples for a final meal, celebrating Passover, knowing he will be arrested in the darkness of the night and crucified the very next day as the true Passover lamb.
Jesus’s discourse recorded in John 13-17 takes place during one night – his final private teaching and preparation with his disciples before the cross. These words are intentional, weighty, and tender. John frames the thirteenth chapter with a powerful summary:
“Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end”
To the end. He loved them to perfection. He loved them to the uttermost. He loved them with total fullness of love. Everything that follows – every action, every word – flows from this love. John is careful to show us that Jesus’s love does not come from uncertainty, weakness or fickle feelings, but from his absolute authority as Lord. He loves utterly, absolutely, perfectly, totally, completely, and without reservation.
Jesus knows his hour has come. He’s on a divine timetable. Instead of being filled with pride because his divine power and glory, Jesus rises from the table to give a living parable of Calvary. He removes his outer garment, takes a towel, pours water into a basin, kneels before the disciples and begins washing their feet. Dirty, calloused, road worn feet. In the first century, foot washing was humiliating work reserved for the lowest servant in the household. And yet, it is the sovereign son of God,
the King of glory, who kneels before his disciples - the ones who hardly would’ve dreamed of doing this for each other. He holds dirty feet in his holy hands.
This is our Jesus – he humbled himself and took the form and demeanor of a servant. Having willingly set aside the glory that was rightfully his, and in spite of the disciples’ appalling selfishness, Jesus‘s main concern that night was to demonstrate his personal love to the twelve so that they might be secure in it. When Jesus finally reaches Peter, the scene becomes a little more tense. Peter protests with a mixture of reverence and shock. “ Lord, are you going to wash my feet? ” Only after the Savior‘s death, resurrection, and ascension would Peter understand the full significance and extent of Jesus‘s humiliation.
At this particular moment, Peter is questioning how he could allow the King to wash his feet? Uncomfortable with the Messiah kneeling before him, proud Peter simply gets bolder, “ You shall never wash my feet! ” In his resistance we see a discomfort with GRACE . When he refuses, Jesus responds with authority and necessity. “ Unless I wash you, you have no part with me. ” Peter’s instinct is to move from refusal to excess – “ Lord, not just my feet but my hands and my head as well. ” Jesus affirms, “ Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. ”
In the ancient world, a person would bathe fully before attending a meal. Only their feet were washed after walking, dusty roads. The bath represents salvation – a once for all cleansing accomplished by Christ alone. If you are a believer, you are clean. The foot washing represents ongoing repentance – the daily cleansing we need as we live in a sin sick world. We are told to continu ally agree with God about our sins in order to keep our consciences clean and our commu nion with God unhindered.
Knowing each heart, Jesus adds a sobering truth, “You are clean, though not every one of you.” Unknown to the disciples, this points directly to Judas. Yet he still washes Judas‘s feet. Even now, Jesus is extending love – offering Judas a moment to repent, to turn back, to abandon the path he is on. Jesus’s words and actions were a subtle, tender, and final appeal to Judas. This is persistent, humble, selfless and undeserved love. Love that confronts with truth and compassion.
After this deep dive into soul cleansing, Jesus puts on his outer garments and resumes his place at the table. “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” This moment in the upper room is heavy with tension. Scripture is being fulfilled. Love is extended, even to the betrayer. Like the disciples, we must remember, Jesus is not naïve. He is sovereign. Judas’s betrayal does not catch Jesus off guard, nor does it derail God’s redemptive plan. Jesus declares these things so that the disciples will know that He is Lord and he’s in control.
With Judas gone there is a change in the room. Jesus now speaks openly and plainly to the remaining disciples, addressing them as his little children, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him.” Glory is tied directly to the cross where love will reach its fullest expression in willing sacrifice. With this in mind, Jesus gives a new command to his disciples, “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love on another.” In our world today, the word, love, has been hijacked. It’s emotional, monetized, sexualized, shallow and noncommittal. Its love if you feel it and as long as it’s convenient. It’s love if they deserve it. This is wildly different from the love Jesus is about. His love is selfless, sacrificial, visible, forgiving, costly, defining, and it keeps loving to the end. This love is how the world will know we belong to Jesus. It’s the public evidence of our allegiance to Christ. Jesus defines what love looks like and it looks like him.
Peter turns the conversation back to himself, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answers with truth and tenderness. “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.” Jesus is not dismissing Peter – he’s reassuring him. There’s a future beyond the coming failure. Before Peter ever stumbles, Jesus already sees restoration on the horizon. Peter, full of confidence and sincere devotion, promises loyalty. “I will lay down my life for you.” Jesus responds with truth, wrapped in love, refusing to let Peter live under an illusion about his own strength. “Will you lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” This prediction is not cruelty. It is compassion.
Notice what Jesus does not do: He does not shame Peter. He does not remove Peter from the group or withdraw his love. Peter’s denial will not foil God’s plan. Jesus’s love will be waiting on the other side – ready to restore, recommission and reaffirm. This love knows us completely and refuses to let our worst moments define us.
John 13 shows us a servant King who reigns from a towel and cross. Jesus is fully Lord and his love is active. He sacrifices, serves, cleanses, confronts, transforms, and restores. To follow him is not merely to admire his love, but to submit to his Lordship and reflect his love to a world who desperately needs to know the One who still washes, restores and reigns today!

Tornado Safety
High Winds and Tornado Safety:
As we enter the spring season it is important to stay informed about high wind / tornado situations.
Building Closures: If the weather conditions pose a safety concern Calvary may decide to close the building. Any closures will be posted on Calvary’s website and Facebook page. If you have signed up for emails or text alerts you may receive them directly on your mobile device.
Safety First: If you are at church during a High Wind / Tornado Weather WARNING you will be instructed by a verbal public address to take shelter in the designated lower level rooms. Note for the safety of children, only checked-in children and the care volunteers will be allowed in some of the rooms. The other rooms will be considered for public use. If you check your child out of the designated room you will be asked to move to one of the public shelter areas.
Deacon Updates

Recently I was reading through Acts and came across Acts 6:3 “Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to do this duty.” My first thought was this describes our Deacons here at Calvary Church. Men and women of character, full of the spirit and wisdom appointed to provide care. Now this passage doesn’t name them directly as deacons, but they were to handle administration and serving needs that were not previously being satisfied in the early church in Acts.
I want to share with the congregation that the deacon ministry at Calvary Church is active, vibrant and fruitful! We currently have 27 deacons serving countless hours in diverse areas of the church like hospitality, bereavement care, missionary care, short-term missions, food distribution, elder prayer, giving, bible studies and baptisms to name only a few.
In 2025, two new deacon ministry roles were created: Deacon of Library and Deacon of Renew Crew. Both of these ministries are not new, but are undergoing growth and transformation. Emily Demsky will share updates about the Library (below) in this issue and I encourage you to check it out. Please continue to pray for the deacons as they live out their calling to be the hands and feet of Jesus to Calvary Church and to the greater community.

In the past couple of years the Calvary Library Team has been working to grow our collection of books that support our mission of, Edifying, Challenging and Equipping the Church. We have grown our Christian Living Section, along with purchasing many other resources to support our Pastoral Residents and staff. We have made some new additions to our Library space as well, including an iPad so guests can look up resources on our virtual catalog. We have an amazing team of volunteers and committee members that are faithfully serving and supporting the library and all who visit.
Moving forward we are looking to grow in our ability to support Calvary Ministries and the church body. We are prayerfully considering how to grow in Benevolence and how to make resources available to everyone that enters Calvary. This includes purchasing books in large print and a variety of languages. We hope you will come down and visit the library if you haven’t yet and that it will be a blessing to you.
The Calvary Library is located on the lower level, near Entrance G, and it is open anytime the building is. You can visit the library to study, read or check out books with our self checkout system.

The Jerusalem Project is a ministry of Calvary Church that partners with established churches, trains church leaders and plants new churches throughout West Michigan and the world.
As an initiative of the Train Branch, The Jerusalem Project Institute (JPI) provides biblical training to equip church leaders. In addition to training men and women from within Calvary, JPI helps to strengthen other congregations. Several of our partner churches encourage their ministry leaders to benefit from JPI, and ministry leaders from churches across Grand Rapids teach JPI classes.
JPI Overview
JPI equips individuals to grow closer to God while building a solid theological foundation that shapes everyday life and faithful service. There are three classes offered:
• Foundations of Theology explores the Old and New Testaments, Christian worldview, and core doctrines. Participants also develop key spiritual and leadership skills, including biblical fluency, effective communication, lifelong learning, and living in Christian community.
• Theology for Life examines how Christian beliefs inform spiritual growth, church life, and engagement with the world. This course emphasizes the practical impact of theology on daily living and deepening relationships with God, the Church, and others.
• Scripture Speaks helps participants grow in biblical literacy, teaching how to read and interpret Scripture to discern God’s message, guidance, and personal direction.
JPI students gain confidence in studying the bible, learn discipline and develop a deeper understanding of scripture. Practicing consistent spiritual practices, like journaling and daily bible reading, strengthen their relationship with God, and encourage boldness to share their faith. Students also gain a richer grasp of church history, theology and God’s character, fostering a more mature and assured faith.

Jerusalem Project Institute courses encourage reflection, spiritual practice and kingdomminded action, equipping participants to live out their faith with insight, courage and purpose.

Exciting News: New Community Groups Coming Soon!
Recently my wife, our three kids, and I were invited over to the home of a couple here at Calvary Church for dinner and fellowship. They were wonderful hosts. We enjoyed great food, meaningful conversation, and they were especially gracious in letting our kids explore just about every nook and cranny of their home. I think most of us recognize that there is something uniquely special about being invited into someone’s home. Of course, it can come with its own set of worries. What will their home be like? Do they have a giant dog that might send my wife and kids’ allergies into a frenzy? Will we enjoy the food, and more importantly, will my kids eat any of it? Will my kids say or do something that leaves me embarrassed?
There is a certain vulnerability for both the host and the guest. Yet despite all those small worries, when you invite someone into your home or are invited into theirs, relationships are formed in a way that simply doesn’t happen anywhere else.

I share this story with you because meeting in homes is a key part of our Community Group ministry. The unique bonds that are formed within these groups are something we would love for more people to experience.
For those who may not be familiar, Calvary’s Community Groups are small gatherings of our congregation that meet regularly to cultivate meaningful relationships, study God’s Word, live out Christ’s mission, and sometimes share a meal or dessert together. We have groups that include the whole family and others that are made up of adults. Single or married, all are welcome to join.
We’ve been working diligently behind the scenes to prepare for the launch of new Community Groups, but our launch is going to look a little different this year. Here’s a few updates:
First, instead of launching groups only during specific seasons such as Fall and Winter, we will now be launching them all throughout the year. This will provide more opportunities for people to join a group and get connected when the timing is right.
Second, our new groups will be organized geographically. We know life can be busy, and sometimes even driving across town can feel like a barrier. Our hope is that these groups will be located closer to where you live, making it easier to attend and build meaningful relationships with others nearby. Even better, gathering with people in your neighborhood creates a wonderful opportunity to share your faith with those in your local community.

Art Reflecting on the Abudance Series
The Calvary Church Art Committee announces a call for entries for artists from the congregation (for those who call Calvary home) to submit works of art for an exhibition at the Calvary Church Gallery from July - September, 2026.
In our current sermon series on the Epistles of John, we are exploring the abundant life we have in Jesus and seeing how we can experience our future eternal goodness today. The Art Committee requests artists submissions that relate to a time when they experienced the abundance of God in their life. Artists may also share a more general response to 1 John, 2 John, and 3 John.
Artists of all levels from emerging to established, 14 years and older, are encouraged to submit digital images of up to three entries between June 7-20, by electronic means at “info@calvarygr.org,” mentioning Art Committee in the subject line. Additional details can be found at calvarygr.org/art.
Mental Illness Support Group
Louise Gibson, Calvary member and author, will be featured at the June 11 Mental Illness Support Group Meeting in rooms 251-253 from 6:30-8:00pm. Louise will be sharing her recently released book The 12th Mile: When Hard Becomes Harder Still. The book shares her powerful story of parenting a daughter with chronic mental illness while navigating her own health struggles, and how God used the unexpected gift of running to prepare her for the endurance required in life’s hardest seasons. It speaks directly to weary parents, caregivers, siblings, and athletes who quietly battle their own struggles. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and Louise will be available to sign your copy and to answer questions. Refreshments will be served and support group facilitators will be available to listen to your story and pray with you.
