BAPTISM THE POWER OF TESTIMONY

By Becky Caminiti, Deacon of Baptism One of the most common things we hear at Calvary after a baptism service is how much people love hearing the testimonies. As individuals take this step of obedience, our church family is encouraged again and again by the stories of how God saves and transforms His people. Yet, one of the most common things we hear from those preparing to be baptized is that sharing their testimony is the part they fear most! For some, the fear comes from wondering if their story is interesting enough. They may think, “I wasn’t saved out of anything dramatic,” or “My story isn’t big enough to share.” For others, the fear is simply speaking in front of people. And for some, their story includes personal, tender, or painful moments that feel difficult to say out loud. YOUR TESTIMONY IS WORSHIP Throughout the Psalms, however, we see God’s people praising Him by remembering and declaring what He has done. In the same way, the testimonies shared at baptism are more than personal stories. They are acts of worship. They are moments of obedience. They are opportunities to give public praise to our God who redeems.

So why do we encourage those being baptized to share what God is doing in their lives? Psalm 40:3 NLT gives us a beautiful picture of why testimony matters:

Every testimony is a reminder that we too have been redeemed by God’s grace, and that He is a Savior who is worthy of praise. Psalm 107:1-2 encourages us in this, saying:

“He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the Lord.”

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. Has the Lord redeemed you? Then speak out! Tell others he has redeemed you from your enemies.”

That is the purpose of testimony — that many will see what God has done and be amazed. They will be reminded that He is still saving, still drawing people to Himself, still healing, still forgiving, still making all things new. And as the congregation listens, we are encouraged once again to put our trust in this God.

DON’T LET FEAR HOLD YOU BACK If you believe God leading you to be baptized, but the fear of sharing your story is holding you back, please know this: God will be with you every step of the way. Your story does not need to sound like anyone else’s. It does not need to be dramatic to be powerful. It simply needs to an honest representation of the good God who has redeemed you.

YOUR TESTIMONY IS SHARED In addition to being encouraged by remembering who God is, we are also encouraged because it reminds us of our shared testimony. God has redeemed each of us. He has rescued us from sin and darkness. He has brought us from death to life. We are no longer slaves to sin, but children of God. That is amazing and profound. Not one of us deserves this gift of grace, and yet God, in His mercy, has chosen to forgive our sins and bring us into relationship with Himself.

Say yes to the obedient step of baptism that with the psalmist you may you be able to say: “I have told everyone in the great assembly of your unfailing love and faithfulness.” Psalm 40:10 NLT If you would like to learn more about baptism at Calvary, reach out to me at baptismdeacon@calvarygr.org. Fall Worship Night SEPTEMBER 13 · 6:00PM · SANCTUARY

WH Y A WORSH I P NIGHT Think back to a movie trailer you saw recently. How did it make you feel? Did it make you want to see the full movie? When you eventually saw the movie, did you notice details you might not have understood without the trailer highlighting them? Twice a year, we invite the congregation to a night of song, scripture, and prayer. These worship nights are prayerfully planned to operate as “movie trailers” for our upcoming services! In the fall, we kick off the ministry year with a worship night that previews some of the specific themes and ideas that we’ll encounter in the upcoming sermon series. Our prayer is that worship nights help prepare and awaken us to the work the Lord wants to accomplish in our Sunday morning worship services, just as a movie trailer grows our excitment and anticipation for what a movie has for us. Of course, they’re not pre-requisites, you can watch a movie without seeing the trailer. But when you’re already eager for a movie, doesn’t the trailer build in some extra joy? We are eager to see what the Lord will do through our upcoming series on the book of Jeremiah and we hope that you will join us for a sneak peak at our upcoming Worship Night on September 13! U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H I S A N N U A L S E L E C T I O N P R O C E S S At Calvary Church, the elders give oversight and direction to the church. They meet monthly to prayerfully consider church direction, policy and discipline. Elders serve a three-year term, with approximately 1/3 of the board rotating off every year. The process for selecting who will fill these vacancies begins In January. At that time, Calvary’s Nominating Committee requests congregational input in helping identify qualified men of God for consideration for the office of Elder. Over the next several months, through a process of prayer, discernment and conversation, the committee and the Elder Executive Team prepare the list of nominees you see below. At the Annual Meeting, church members have the opportunity to affirm each of these men for the role of elder. Those ballots are collected and tallied during the meeting. Then, a selection of elders takes place by casting of lots, from the remaining group of nominees. This year, there are five elder vacancies to fill. Here are the nominees.

Bi l l Azkou l Bill and Janis have been married for 41 years. They have three children and four grandchildren. Bill began attending Calvary in 1970 and has served as an elder on three occasions. He is currently participating on the Frontier Church Advisory Board, the Jerusalem Project Staff Advisory Committee, and the Jerusalem Project Church Plant Committee. He formerly served on the Sanctuary Church Advisory Board, the Nominating Committee, and the Leadership Development Committee. Bill and Janis previously taught the Young Marrieds Sunday School Class, and they lead a community group.

Steve Bag ley Steve and his wife, Ann, have been married for 28 years and have attended Calvary Church since 1997. They are thankful for the Godly instruction received at Calvary Church, and how that has positively impacted them and their four children. Steve has volunteered in the children’s and youth programs on Sundays and Wednesday nights, has served on various committees, and has been thankful to participate, most recently, as an LDF facilitator. Steve has been a Calvary deacon and served one term as a Calvary elder. Steve and Ann are especially thankful for the Lord’s great care and blessing, often shown through the Calvary Church family.

David Ferm in David and his wife Brooke have been attending Calvary since moving to Grand Rapids in 2013. David has been through the Leadership Development Forum (LDF), and through the years at Calvary has been blessed with great spiritual mentors and friends. For several years David and Brooke served on a marriage enrichment commission for a national medical ministry. He hopes to contribute to the orchestra as it is his goal this year to rebuild his trumpet playing “chops!” The Fermins have been married for 26 years and have three children, Luke, Samuel and Lily who have been deeply blessed by the teaching and ministries at Calvary.

Steve Gron s ma n Steve and his wife Cindy met at Calvary 37 years ago and they have been married for 34 years. They have two adult children who are married and one grandchild due in October. Steve previously served as a Deacon and an Elder, as well as many different volunteer positions within the church. He is currently involved in the Domestic Abuse Response Team, Pastoral Residence Task Force, Leadership Development Forum, and Organization Partnership Team.

J ames Hoekwa ter Jim and Kristie have been married for 34 years and have attended Calvary Church for 31 years. They have three married children, Courtney, Tyler and Jenna. Jim and Kristie have served as missionary encouragers, in Calvary Cafe, as communion servers through Oasis, as adult small group facilitators and middle school small group leaders, and have enjoyed serving on missions trips to Ukraine and Honduras. Jim has served on the advisory board for Pauper’s Chapel, a Calvary Church plant, and has served one previous term as deacon and one term as elder.

J osh H u l st Josh and his wife, Leslie, have been married for 17 years and are blessed to be the parents of Kristen and William. Josh grew up at Calvary and Leslie joined as a high schooler. Together, they’ve taught and led an adult Sunday School class and a small group, and Josh has served as Treasurer, Deacon, and in other ministries.

J u stin Wa lz Justin has been attending Calvary since 2009. He has served on the Parking Lot Team, as a Small Group leader, a KNA leader, Calvary Cafe volunteer, and a men’s LDF men’s facilitator. Justin and Anna have five kids and live in Lowell.

For several months, a team of staff and volunteers, working alongside local agency TBX, and led by Lead Pastor, Tom Olsson, has been developing a new website and refreshed brand for Calvary Church. While our main aim was to improve the experience and functionality of our website, we also recognized that our brand identity could better reflect the dynamic and Spirit-filled community that God is increasingly transforming Calvary into. While our new website won’t launch until later this year, we are excited to roll out Calvary’s refreshed brand identity this fall.

Brand identity refers to the visual and symbolic elements that represent a brand. These elements include a brand’s name, logo, color scheme, typography, and design elements. These elements work together to create a recognizable image for the brand, which people can identify and connect with. - American Marketing Association

As we make these changes, we are linking arms with those who have come before us, building this church in seasons of wilderness and promise over the last 97 years. This next iteration of the Calvary Church brand is really a refresh or an update, not a rebrand. As we build on the past, we are writing the next chapter of this church’s story – remembering what the Lord has done in all the chapters that proceeded this one.

Our new logo is a refreshed interpretation of our cross and circle icon, alongside a clean and modern wordmark, featuring a new brand color that is both classic and fresh at the same time. In this icon we see four pieces… four windows… pointing to the cross that resides at the center of our faith and the center of everything we are and do as a church. This shape comes from one of the most recognizable attributes of this building – it’s found in the brick exterior of our building, in the tile of the crosswalk, above the entrance to the chapel, and in our stained glass windows. This interpretation of these windows gives us a cleaner, more useful icon. Each of the four sections are windows in themselves, representative of windows through which people both inside and outside of the church view what is happening here. These windows also serve as a useful design device to help us focus on certain areas of the church and programming. The inherent promise in showing these glimpses is that there is so much more to experience here. The designers of our brand identity refresh took inspiration directly from our stained glass windows when setting our new color palette. Each of these colors are pulled directly from a section in the window. So this color palette, which feels new and fresh, has actually been here all along. It is Calvary. The unique beauty of stained glass lies in the fact that color is experienced as light. There appears to be no separation between the color and the light or the light and the color. And stained-glass never fades. It doesn’t fade because the color is created when the glass is made. Specific oxides are added to the molten glass and a chemical reaction takes place which alters the atomic structure of the glass so that the glass reflects certain wavelengths of light creating the vibrant colors. The color is literally baked in from the beginning.

In the same way, each of us have been made unique. God has created each of us with our own attributes, personalities, and gifts. These give us our unique ‘color’ that is seen by those around us as we let God’s light shine through us.

When you see our refreshed brand identity, my hope is that more than being excited about something new, you’re excited about what this new look represents - the life, spirit and beauty of how God is moving within this church. Calvary is a vibrant community where transformation and redemption are happening. We don’t take that for granted. Instead, like stained glass, we pray this vibrancy won’t fade. May we move into a new year of ministry united in pointing people to the cross, letting His light shine through us each day.

STEWARDING GENE RO S I T Y C O M M U N I T Y PA R T N E R S H I P S By Vida Wilson, Director, Mercy & Outreach One of the ways Calvary stewards the generosity of our church family is by partnering with ministries and organizations that faithfully serve our community while sharing the hope of Jesus Christ. Check out this snapshot of several ministry initiatives we helped fund during the 2025–2026 fiscal year.

Camp Beechpoint Schola rs h ips Camp Beechpoint, located in Allegan, Michigan, provides Christian camping experiences for children and families, many of whom are navigating significant life challenges. Because many campers require financial assistance, scholarship funding helps ensure that cost is not a barrier for children to experience a week of gospel-centered teaching, mentorship, and community. Matters of L i fe and B rea th Widows Con ference The Matters of Life and Breath Widows Conference provides biblical encouragement, fellowship, and practical support for widows. This ministry creates opportunities for women to find community, receive spiritual care, and be reminded of God's faithfulness through every season of life.

Oasis of Hope Bu i ld ing Restoration Oasis of Hope provides free medical care for those who are uninsured from its historic 125-year-old facility. Funds were given to support upcoming necessary façade and structural repairs to address leaking windows and interior drywall cracking. These repairs will help preserve a safe and functional space for ongoing ministry. Sista2Sista Financia l Freedom Classes Sista2Sista offers biblically based financial education for women through its Say Yes to No Debt program, developed by Dr. DeForest B. Soaries Jr. The curriculum combines practical financial principles with biblical stewardship, equipping participants to pursue financial health while honoring God in every aspect of their lives.

We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with ministries that faithfully serve others in the name of Christ. There are abundant opportunities to love our neighbors by meeting practical needs and sharing the hope of the gospel. May God bless these initiatives and bring His healing, restoration, and redemption to those who encounter His faithful servants throughout the city of Grand Rapids.

Earlier this year, a team from Calvary drove up to Baldwin, Michigan to minister to vulnerable people. However, the team entered a foreboding building with bars and rows of razor wires on top of fences.

Visit the detention center; join our visits scheduled for the second Saturday of each month. You will receive training prior to the visit time that will help equip the team.

•

Help care for an affected family in GR through prayer and acts of kindness.

The Northlake ICE Detention Center is a former maximum security prison, containing around 1,400 immigrants, 90% of whom hold no criminal record. In the visitor area, children cried as they said goodbye to their parents. Grandparents stood by, with wet cheeks. A sense of hopelessness hung in the air. One man in the center came to the U.S. under “temporary protective status” (TPS). All his documents in order. Doing it right. Doing it by the book. When he needed to pursue a change in status, he was advised to do it from Canada as it would be easier. Instead, ICE picked him up and sent him to the detention center. Three pregnant women at the center, when it was learned they were pregnant, were pressured to have an abortion. They refused. Now, they’re terrified to receive medical appointments out of fear for “what might be done to them.” Heavy. But there is also light shining in the darkness. The Calvary team visited the detention center to care for these people and listen to their stories as an act of service to Jesus. In Matthew 25:34-40, Jesus says, “I was in prison and you came to visit me… I was hungry and you gave me something to eat.” This is a call for every Christian to heed.

One immigrant man in the detention center teared up when visited by Calvary volunteers. He started the visit by thanking God for His goodness. He’s a hardworking man with a legal work permit, trying to follow an ever-changing path to become a citizen of the US. During a standard immigration appointment, he was arrested and sent hundreds of miles from his home to this detention center. Yet, he thanks God. Another immigrant in the detention center had received no visitors prior to the Calvary team’s visit. He’s a father of four children and a brother in Christ. He’s lonely. He had been living in another state, all his documents in order, but had trouble with his vehicle one day. The police he thought he could trust to help called ICE. He was picked up, his car confiscated, and he was brought to Michigan in the dead of winter. The Calvary team gave him what they had: money to call his wife on her birthday (that day), the gift of presence, the gift of God’s Word, the gift of prayer. These are real people, real stories. When we minister to those in prison, people know why they’re there and how long they will stay. For those in the ICE detention center, they don’t know and they don’t understand. May our hearts be moved in mercy for the detained.

CALVARY EX T EN SI ONS IN EURO P E “There is not one evangelical church in this city.” The phrase came again and again, city after city, as Larry, Director of Missions, drove around part of Spain with Jaime Clore, one of Calvary’s global partners. The area, known as the Basque Country, is less than 1% evangelical Christian. Jaime and his wife Annika, are in Spain to spread the Gospel among the Basque people. The Clores fill their time praying for the region, building relationships with the people, sharing the love of Jesus at every opportunity, and pouring into a group of international young adults hungry for God’s Word. Around 600 miles away from Bilboa, Spain, a mouthwatering spread of French cheeses, breads, and vegetables beckon from the outdoor market in Grenoble, with the smell of Arabic spices from a few blocks away adding to the pungent aroma in the air. Here, Larry met with another Calvary global partner, Roy Nagelkirk. Roy and his wife Jennifer are seeking to share the Gospel to the Muslims in the area. On top of that, Roy is the president of the association of Evangelical churches in Grenoble, “made up of various denominations and backgrounds. Charismatic and non-charismatic, traditional and nontraditional, with theology that is reformed, baptistic and other. It is quite a mix. This is both very encouraging, and difficult. It is very encouraging because I know of few places where this kind of unity in Christ is being attempted, and difficult because such differences are what create division and suspicion. However, this challenge is good for the church because it forces us to look to Jesus Christ, His crucifixion and resurrection, as our core belief and the main thing around which to be united.”

RE SOURCES FOR CARE At some point in our lives, we all need a little extra support. Calvary Care offers a variety of resources for those seeking encouragement and care. Whether you would like someone to pray with you, visit you in the hospital, or connect you with a trusted professional counselor in the community, we're here to help. We'd be honored to walk alongside you. Did you know that when someone at Calvary loses a loved one, we have a bereavement ministry and volunteers will be praying as soon as they hear about this loss? This group of men and women also write notes of encouragement to those who have lost a loved one. Brian Swanton is our Deacon of Bereavement and has been leading this group of volunteers for several years. Brian is kind and tenderhearted and is such an important part of Calvary Care, especially for those who are grieving a loss. At this time, we are also here to walk with you through the process of planning the funeral. Additionally, Dale McNinch recently joined the Calvary Care team as our Deacon of Hospital Care. We have a group of men and women who can pray with you prior to surgery, or visit if you or a loved one are hospitalized for an extended time. Dale’s compassion and love for people is evident to all those hospitalized and we are excited for this new role. At Calvary, we also seek to support and strengthen marriage so couples can experience the joy that God intended as well as be equipped to withstand the challenges that arise over the years. Al-Anon Meetings Al-Anon is a program of recovery for the families and friends of an alcoholic, whether or not the alcoholic recognizes the existence of a drinking problem or seeks help. Alcoholics Anonymous Meetings Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of people who come together who want to do something about their drinking problem. A.A.’s primary purpose is to help alcoholics to achieve sobriety. Avenue Group Private group for men who desire freedom from shame in their struggle with pornography and sexual brokenness. At Avenue, men experience Biblically sound materials, a supportive environment, and both accountability and encouragement. Calvary Church Cancer Encouragement Ministry One-on-one support ministry that partners cancer patients or caregivers with compassionate Cancer Ministry Volunteers (Cancer Encouragers). Volunteers will walk alongside you to provide spiritual encouragement, friendship, and practical help.

DivorceCare Support Group A 13-session support group for those processing through the journey of divorce. A native of Grand Rapids, Gabe came to Calvary having served on the staff at several churches and with a master’s degree in Christian Leadership from Cornerstone Theological Seminary. In addition to the educational components of the residency, such as Leadership Development Forum and the Jerusalem Project Institute, the lasting impact for Gabe are relationships and opportunities he’s had as part of the pastoral residency. Gabe served with Oasis during his second-year placement and was instrumental in developing the Oasis@ Care program. Following the residency, Gabe will continue to serve on Calvary’s staff as the assistant pastor.

Luke came to Calvary after receiving a Master of Divinity degree from Rawling’s School of Divinity at Liberty University. While in the pastoral residency program, Luke had the opportunity to be part of mission trips to Greece and Cuba, preach in YA and Oasis, as well as many other opportunities. During his second year of the residency, he served at Indwelling Community Church. Luke has accepted the executive pastor role at Indwelling beginning in September, where he will help shepherd the congregation.

Tanner recently completed his first year of the pastoral residency having come to Calvary after serving for several years with his family in Southeast Asia. During his second year, Tanner will work in Adult Ministries to strengthen and shepherd community groups, as well as assist Operations with some major projects.

A highlight from Oasis: “On the Oasis Serve Day we visited people who were unable to attend Oasis events and served them through prayer, encouragement, and desserts. Every person we visited expressed how grateful they were that someone cared enough to come see them. It was a beautiful reminder that ministry is often found in the simple act of showing up.”

Impact of the pastoral residency: “God reaffirmed the calling he has placed on my life—to minister the gospel of Jesus Christ and help propel its message forward. There are seasons in life when discouragement and self-doubt can creep in, but as I've reflected on this journey, I've been reminded of God's kindness and His faithfulness in continually confirming His call, not only for me but for my family as well.”

Lessons learned during the pastoral residency: “The deepest and most significant revelation has been the worthiness and the supremacy of Jesus in my life and ministry. Ministry becomes sustainable and life becomes worth living when I let all the distractions fade away and fix my gaze upon the face of the Lord Jesus Christ.” Impact of the pastoral residency: “My time in the pastoral residency program changed my life. I learned many lessons, had enriching conversations, and received ministry experience, but most importantly God used the residency to shape me into the person I am today. I anticipate experiencing the fruit of this residency for many years to come.”

First-year reflections: The first year of the residency has been a gift! God has used this season to refocus me on Him and to be used in new ways. It’s been helpful to get a full breadth of the work happening at Calvary. I also really appreciate my times with Mason. He has listened well and given timely encouragements and warnings along the journey. Using his gifts as part of the pastoral residency: It has been fun to see how God has used my passion for evangelism and discipleship in different ways throughout the church. It’s also encouraging to see how God has used my past experiences in the church.

If you’ve noticed, the excitement around Calvary Church has been slowly building as we anticipated the start of our official 2026-27 ministry year. With a new season comes the start of new classes, Bible studies, Wednesday evening programming and so much more! As you settle into a new rhythm of life during this time, would you please consider joining us as a volunteer? Our culture at Calvary Church is one of community and growing in faith, where we all join hands to serve one another and provide a rich, godly culture to engage in powerful ministry involvement. If God has been tugging at your heart for quite some time now or if you are new to the idea of serving, take that first step of faith trusting that God has something special for you. If you love working with children, we also have opportunities to serve midweek to support moms coming for Tuesday Morning Bible Study or Embrace Moms Ministry. If you enjoy being outdoors, come join our Facilities Groundskeeping Team assisting with lawncare, gardening support or snow removal during the winter months. Support our International Student Ministry as a van driver picking up students from Calvin University on Sunday mornings, providing a place of fellowship and giving them the opportunity to worship with us each week. T WO WAYS TO G ET I N VO LV E D : COMMUNION PREPARERS gather the day before Communion Sunday to prepare the bread and juice for each service. It is a wonderful opportunity for fellowship as the team works together, shares conversations, and encourages one another while serving. There is something special about knowing that each cup and every piece of bread has been prepared with care for a moment that points people to the cross and reminds our church family of the incredible love and sacrifice of Jesus.

COMMUNION SERVERS have the privilege of serving during our worship services by distributing the bread and the cup to the congregation. As you serve, you become part of a beautiful expression of Christ’s love, joining with others in ministry and helping guide our church family through one of the most meaningful moments of worship. COME S E RV E YOUNG MOMS & CHI LD R E N From September through May, Calvary’s Women’s Ministry offers Embrace Moms, a warm community where faith is strengthened through friendships, mentoring and sound teaching for mothers with babies and young children. While moms gather, our Kid’s Team has the opportunity to invest in the next generation by sharing God’s love through play, songs, Bible stories and caring relationships. Embrace begins September 17, 9:15-11:15am and meets the first, third and fifth Thursday of each month through May. A Testimony from Michelle Kloss, Embrace Participant Embrace was first introduced to me in the Summer of 2024. I had just given birth to my boy/girl twins in June that year when my sister mentioned she knew of a supportive community for mothers who were in a similar phase of life called Embrace through Calvary Church. Unlike my sister, who had been attending services and partaking in small group and Bible Study through Calvary for the last decade, my faith life was very inactive. I still believed in God, I just did not agree with organized religion. At least that is what I told myself. Despite my disinterest at that time in deepening my faith, I was very excited by the prospect of joining a community which supported motherhood. I ended up joining Embrace in Fall 2024. I enjoyed the brunches, childcare, and sense of community. I began to warm up to the idea of diving deeper into my faith, but I could always find an excuse: we are already busy without adding more to the calendar, Sunday is my day to sleep in, it’s too much of a commitment. Since I had enjoyed Embrace so much the year prior, I decided to join again for the 2025-2026 season. What I did not foresee is that this year would be a pivotal turning point in my personal and faith-based life. Life at home became chaotic. My marriage had become strained. I was desperate for peace in my home and in my heart. I had tried the worldly solutions to calm the storm, but that peace never came. God’s timing is always perfect. On a Thursday morning at Embrace, the story of Leah was shared. The message resounded within me and my feelings of my own life. Much like Leah, I felt overlooked, rejected, and like I was falling short. Leah’s story taught me that once you stop focusing on what you lack and look to God, you can begin to see yourself the way He sees you and heal. Joy is born not from perfection, but from a surrendered heart that trusts in the path God has set for you. Together, Leah’s story and support from the women at Embrace gave me the strength and bravery to finally commit myself to my faith. I started regularly attending services at Calvary with my children and actively engaging in my faith for the first time in years. I have finally found peace; not because the challenges are gone and the struggles are a thing of the past, but because I look to the Lord and he makes my burdens light. If you are looking for a sign to dive deeper into your faith, to join a community full of support and faithfulness, to experience the peace that only God can bring, let this be it. God wants each of us to know His love. His arms are always open. Choose Him as He has already chosen you.
