Aker Wade has been supporting the integration of DC Fast Charging on GM’s Spark EV, and is now preparing to offer a UL certified DC Fast Charger that can be ordered either with CHAdeMO or SAE/IEC connectors. The SAE/IEC version will feature the “Combo” connector, which combines both Level I & II and DC charging in one chargeport.

Southern Company Developing Electro-technologies to Leverage US Energy Resources As part of its decades-long commitment to energy innovation, Southern Company is developing electrotechnologies that leverage America’s energy resources to improve efficiency, lower costs to customers and lessen the environmental impact. The company’s involvement in on- and off-road electric transportation research and development dates back to the early 1990s, and Southern Company has been an active member of CALSTART’s HTUF (HighEfficiency Truck Users Forum) since its inception more than a decade ago.

“Through our company’s HTUF collaboration, subsidiaries Alabama Power and Georgia Power acquired plug-in electric bucket trucks for fleet testing,” said Randy Johnson, director of Southern Company’s electric transportation team. “Equipped with the latest technology, these trucks achieve emissions and noise reductions and fuel and maintenance cost savings – delivering real benefits to our utilities’ customers.”

HTUF team members and working groups are identifying opportunities for future fleets by bringing together manufacturers, alternative fuel communities and other companies.

The Georgia Ports Authority in Savannah and the Alabama State Port Authority in Mobile reduced their combined diesel usage by 6.6 million gallons a year by converting equipment, including ship-toshore gantry cranes, from diesel to electric. After Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Delta Air Lines realized the benefits of their own diesel-to-electric conversions, the airport developed an all-electric international complex supported exclusively by electric-powered

equipment. An Alabama mine operator reduced its annual fuel bill from $5 million to $1 million by replacing five miles of diesel-fueled conveyors with electric conveyors – saving 80 percent while accomplishing the same task. As a result of this success, the mine is planning to convert additional diesel-fueled conveyors and equipment in the near future.

On May 22, over 150 attendees met at the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum in Birmingham, Alabama for the first-ever HTUF Southeast Regional Fleet Workshop. Fleet professionals from over 22 organizations attended the meeting.

The regional workshop, which will be replicated in New York, as well as Southern and Northern California, was

outstanding turnout and informative forum sessions, made the event an overwhelming success.”

Freightliner and Eaton sponsored the meeting, and 14 vehicle manufacturers were on hand to demonstrate their technologies.

ZEPS Battery Bus Unveiled Complete Coach Works (CCW) and Ben Franklin Transit, partnering with CALSTART, have unveiled an advanced battery-electric bus. In order to overcome the high cost of battery buses, the Zero Emission Propulsion System (ZEPS) battery bus was built using a remanufactured diesel bus donated by Ben Franklin. This remanufacturing process saves money, is faster to implement, and reduces the impact of retired vehicles. The ZEPS bus costs much

EcoRide™ on the Streets of Stockton On May 20, Proterra and the San Joaquin Regional Transit District hosted an unveiling of the company’s EcoRide™ battery electric buses. The two buses begin a demonstration project in the City of Stockton, carrying passengers in regular service. The buses, operating on a rapid charging system, have all of the functionality of a conventional transit bus.

By recharging for 10 minutes every two hours, the buses are able to operate throughout the day. The charging station is fully automated. When the Proterra bus approaches the charge station, the station recognizes the bus, guides it into position, and charges it without driver interaction.

As the grantee for the California Energy Commission’s AB 118 grant program, CALSTART is providing support and administration services and overseeing the $2.56 million awarded to Proterra.

Deployed in Richland, Washington, the ZEPS bus travels up to 130 miles on a single charge and makes use of green and low-cost hydroelectric power to reduce emissions and save on fuel costs compared to a diesel bus. CCW estimates that the ZEPS bus will save up to $266,000 over the life of the vehicle.

CALSTART is supporting this project by administering grant funding from the Federal Transit Administration, through the support of Senator Patty Murray (D-WA). The organization’s expertise in zero-emission, battery and fuel cell buses contributes to a successful demonstration.

Complete Coach Works, a CALSTART industry member, is working to expand demonstrations of the ZEPS bus to transit properties nationwide.

“The San Joaquin RTD deserves to be congratulated as the first transit property in all of Northern California to put battery electric buses into revenue service. This is a major milestone, and a big first step in the effort to improve air quality in the San Joaquin Valley,” said CALSTART President and CEO John Boesel.

CALSTART is co-sponsoring two California bills (SB 11 and AB 8) that would extend the sunset dates on three clean transportation incentive programs. Passage would provide an additional $2 billion in incentive funding, including purchase incentives for clean cars and trucks, manufacturing assistance, infrastructure funds and demonstration grants. SB 11 passed the Senate May 29th with strong bipartisan support and now heads to the Assembly. AB 8 has not had its first major floor vote and has yet to clear several hurdles in both the Assembly and the Senate.

Now that FY 2013 appropriations have been finalized, CALSTART is working with industry and transit partners in preparation for the next round of Federal Transit Administration (FTA) research grants.

Discussions are underway regarding the use of revenues from California’s AB 32 greenhouse  gas cap and trade program. A recently released Investment Plan for these funds identified transportation technology investments as a Member benefits high priority. Although it is not yet clear include:  Funding updates and whether any funds will be invested this year, CALSTART and others are working to secure announcements  Discounts on events this year investments in clean car and truck and webinars incentive programs.

With the FY 2014 federal budget request delayed by two months, the appropriations process is now beginning. The House and Senate are more than $100 billion apart in their proposed budgets, increasing the likelihood of a fall budget showdown. CALSTART is working with Congress to provide increased funding for the FTA research program above the President’s budget request. Under the current federal transportation bill, Congress is authorized to allocate up to $75 million for federal research programs, with direction that zero/near-zero emission bus development and deployment funding be a high priority. In FY13, Congress only allocated $35 million for this program.

On the regulatory front, California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard remains a hot topic. The  policy calls for a 10% reduction in the carbon intensity of transportation fuels in California by 2020 and is intended to drive investment in a wide variety of clean fuels, from natural gas to next generation biofuels to electricity. CALSTART is also providing input on legislation related to carpool lane access for clean vehicles, clean vehicle sales taxes and registration fees, zero emission vehicle infrastructure and low carbon fuels.

The Department of Transportation announced its next round of Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grants and CALSTART is assisting a group of transit properties in developing a project for application. Interested agencies should contact Fred Silver at 626-744-5600 to get involved.

The current federal transportation bill (known in DC jargon as “MAP-21”) is only a two-year bill. CALSTART and its partners have begun contacting key stakeholders and will be seeking to develop a larger and more robust zero/near zero emission bus program in the next transportation bill.

CALSTART supported the nominations of Anthony Foxx as the Secretary of Transportation and Ernest Moniz as Secretary for the Department of Energy. Moniz was confirmed May 16 and in a speech the next day indicated that energy efficiency would be a high priority for his tenure.
