A Note from the Artistic Director Welcome to Urinetown, the second show of our Fall 2024 CalREP Season! Urinetown brings us to a dystopian city where the most basic human need comes at the highest cost. This musical comedy packs a punch of hilarious social commentary through its all-too-relevant tale of resistance, directed by CSULB Theatre Arts alum Daniel Nakawatase.

As the 2024 election season looms, we are all too aware of the many existential challenges that face our society, which I hope we can see somehow more clearly through the satirical lens of the darkly comedic challenges facing the residents of Urinetown.

In this spirit of social action, I urge you to take the energy of the show into your daily life by voting in the upcoming election, and participating however you are able in the democratic process this fall.

A Note from the Director Bertolt Brecht, one of the most influential theatre practitioners, believed that theatre should provoke the audience to think critically about the world we live in. Afterall, theatre is inherently political and has been used as a way to call attention to and undermine systems of oppression and injustice throughout the ages. According to Brecht, the audience should not be so immersed in the story and emotion that they lose themselves, which would render the intellect and critical mind inaccessible. Instead, he held that the audience should engage with the play at multiple different access points in order to make meaningful, real life connections.

Enter Urinetown, an unassuming musical that premiered in 2001. 20+ years ago, the premise might have seemed so absurd that it would make Ionesco proud: a corporation that essentially became a fascist governing entity by privately regulating basic necessities at a premium cost thus gaining control of the economy and the people. Today? It doesn’t seem that far off given the current state of the country, does it?

We live in uncertain and scary times where ignorance and fear are weaponized to threaten freedom and democracy, where greed and power feed the systems of oppression and exploitation.

I believe we are so fortunate to be putting on this musical in a university theatre program that encourages theatre for social and political change with students who are so forward thinking and interested in using theatre for what it has always been intended for.

With any luck, they will be the ones who carry on the tradition of creating art that educates, informs, encourages discourse, and carves out a path for unity. But for now, I hope you have a good laugh and take away something that resonated with you out into the world.

Art Alvarez is a senior here at CSULB and is a Theater Arts Major.

This is Isabella’s 4th year at Cal State Long Beach and her last production with Cal Rep! She is very excited to end her time here with such an amazing production and cast. Her past credits include: Dry Land, ROL Model, and Frantic Assembly. Urinetown has been one of her favorite performances to date and is grateful to have been apart of a production with very talented and creative artists.

Elijah Golembiewski is a 3rd Year transfer student in his first show at CSULB with a Major in Theatre Arts Performance. His past shows have been The SpongeBob SquarePants Musical (Squidward) at No Square Theatre in Laguna Beach, and Carrie The Musical (Tommy Ross) at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo.

Alex Huynh is a 5th year transfer student that is majoring in General Theater Arts. His past credits include OCC’s Working the Musical (Raj, Ralph, and Ensemble) and GWC’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Philostrate). He is very excited to performing for the first time in the CSULB campus! Thank you to everyone involved and he hopes you enjoy the show!

Cast Annabelle Kerns is a Senior in the Theatre Performance program.

The idea for Urinetown In 1995, Greg Kotis went on a “poorly planned trip to Europe in late winter/spring” while performing with the Neo-Futurists* for a theater festival. Kotis ran out of money almost immediately and tried his best to save money where he could.

Part of his money-saving plan included eating cheap, belly-filling foods, sleeping in train stations, and avoiding the public bathrooms. In Europe, all public bathrooms are pay-per-use. The idea came to him as he says, “from being too homesick, too broke, and too full of belly-filling foods, while inhabiting natural bodily functions for too long.”

When Kotis returned to the state, he met with long-time friend & collaborator Mark Hollmann. At the time, Hollmann was becoming a professional composer. The first song composed was “Privilege to pee” sung by Penelope Pennywise, and it set the tone for the whole show. And when the show launched with an audience at the New York Fringe Festival**, Hollmann played the piano. After the Fringe, the show went off-Broadway, then got picked up and had its debut on Broadway on September 20, 2001. Originally, they were meant to open on September 13, 2001, but the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York pushed opening a week behind.

Notes: *Neo-Futurists= A Chicago-based experimental theater company. **Fringe Festival= An arts festival where artists try out new work in unofficial & unconventional setting.

Show Recognition On June 2, 2002 Urinetown won three Tony awards*: one for book, one for score, and third for direction.

It’s creation has inspired many to perform their own iteration of the show. You will find many high schools & universities performing its own version of Urinetown.

Does pay-per-use still exist?

Yes! Places in Europe (Germany, London, France), Mexico, and others require a fee to use the toilet.

We asked our Theatre Management Team for some experience.

Perla Barajas (2nd Year) stated, “In Mexico you pay 5 pesos, they hand you a few toilets paper squares and open the gate for you. I always take extra napkins with me, because they never give you enough.”

The Bob (2nd year) stated, “When I traveled to Europe this summer, I saw all kinds of public toilets. Even some high-tech selfcleaning ones.”

Watch what happens when a water shortage creates heroes & villains.

Urinetown is a satirical, fictional world that is built on real life themes. The show considers how a society operates under a dictatorship where capitalism is prioritized. Bodily functions are regulated by law. And marginalized groups aren’t supported by government regulation.

Throughout the show consider themes that pop up that you can discuss further in class. Some examples include: Capitalism Revolution Legislation People in power (Lawyers / Politicians/ Business CEOs) Law reform Political Regulations targeting the control of specific demographics Policing of people in poverty Bribery Public Trust Classism We hope that this show can spark conversations amongst you and your peers.
