Asthe2024electionseasonlooms,wearealltooawareofthe manyexistentialchallengesthatfaceoursociety,whichIhope wecanseesomehowmoreclearlythroughthesatiricallensof thedarklycomedicchallengesfacingtheresidentsofUrinetown. Inthisspiritofsocialaction,Iurgeyoutotaketheenergyofthe showintoyourdailylifebyvotingintheupcomingelection,and participatinghoweveryouareableinthedemocraticprocess thisfall.

BertoltBrecht,oneofthemostinfluentialtheatre practitioners,believedthattheatreshouldprovokethe audiencetothinkcriticallyabouttheworldwelivein.Afterall, theatreisinherentlypoliticalandhasbeenusedasawayto callattentiontoandunderminesystemsofoppressionand injusticethroughouttheages.AccordingtoBrecht,the audienceshouldnotbesoimmersedinthestoryand emotionthattheylosethemselves,whichwouldrenderthe intellectandcriticalmindinaccessible.Instead,heheldthat theaudienceshouldengagewiththeplayatmultiple differentaccesspointsinordertomakemeaningful,reallife connections.
EnterUrinetown,anunassumingmusicalthatpremieredin 2001.20+yearsago,thepremisemighthaveseemedso absurdthatitwouldmakeIonescoproud:acorporationthat essentiallybecameafascistgoverningentitybyprivately regulatingbasicnecessitiesatapremiumcostthusgaining controloftheeconomyandthepeople.Today?Itdoesn’t seemthatfaroffgiventhecurrentstateofthecountry,does it?
Weliveinuncertainandscarytimeswhereignoranceand fearareweaponizedtothreatenfreedomanddemocracy, wheregreedandpowerfeedthesystemsofoppressionand exploitation.

In1995,GregKotiswentona“poorlyplannedtriptoEuropeinlate winter/spring”whileperformingwiththeNeo-Futurists*fora theaterfestival.Kotisranoutofmoneyalmostimmediatelyand triedhisbesttosavemoneywherehecould.
Partofhismoney-savingplanincludedeatingcheap,belly-filling foods,sleepingintrainstations,andavoidingthepublic bathrooms.InEurope,allpublicbathroomsarepay-per-use.The ideacametohimashesays,“frombeingtoohomesick,too broke,andtoofullofbelly-fillingfoods,whileinhabitingnatural bodilyfunctionsfortoolong.”
WhenKotisreturnedtothestate,hemetwithlong-timefriend& collaboratorMarkHollmann.Atthetime,Hollmannwasbecoming aprofessionalcomposer.Thefirstsongcomposedwas“Privilege topee”sungbyPenelopePennywise,anditsetthetoneforthe wholeshow.Andwhentheshowlaunchedwithanaudienceat theNewYorkFringeFestival**,Hollmannplayedthepiano.After theFringe,theshowwentoff-Broadway,thengotpickedupand haditsdebutonBroadwayonSeptember20,2001.Originally,they weremeanttoopenonSeptember13,2001,butthe9/11terrorist attackinNewYorkpushedopeningaweekbehind.
