As we conclude our 2023-24 CalREP season, I want to express my gratitude to every one of you who are joining us for our final production Ride the Cyclone.
You’re about to meet six dead teenagers and a mechanical fortune teller who sends them on a wild ride This quirky and enchanting cult musical is hilarious, tragic, and wholly of our time. In a wildly chaotic world sometimes dark comedy is the most appropriate and captivating genre to celebrate the escapism of live theatre in a way that brings us back to the power of human connection
We are thrilled to welcome back the extraordinary director Kari Haytor, who you may recall from our 2019 production of Cabaret Kari has led an outstanding team of professional artists and exemplary students who brought this show to life.
While this season ends, I want to invite you to join us this fall for four hilarious productions centered on our season theme “Laughing Together,” celebrating our diversity through comedy. We begin the 2024-25 CalREP season with Beach Comedy Hour, an original night of comedy directed by Groundlings member and CSULB alum Diego Parada. Next comes the hit Broadway musical Urinetown directed by CSULB alum Daniel Nakawatasae. Our third production, Small Mouth Sounds, where we meet six strangers at a silent meditation retreat, is directed by Beth Lopes. We finish the fall with one of the hottest plays in the country this year, Clyde’s directed by Keiana Richàrd-Bartolomë. We hope to see you there!
Now as the show begins, you, the audience, play a special role as we create the magic of live theatre together. Make sure to turn off your devices, refrain from talking during the show, and strap in for a musical theatre treat
Warmly,
Ezra LeBank Chair, Department of Theatre ArtsRide the Cyclone, written by Jacob Richmond and Brooke Maxwell, premiered in Victoria, British Columbia in 2008 Gaining traction, Ride The Cyclone took off in 2013 going on a Canadian tour, and by 2016 it made its off-broadway debut in America.
This touching story of six teens fighting for their lives via dance battles and sing-offs went viral on TikTok in 2022. “The Ballad of Jane Doe” haunted viewers and drew them in, ultimately revealing a beautiful story of love, loss, and second chances. After 15 years, Ride the Cyclone finally had its cult following.
At CalRep, we are the third theater in California to produce this show, but not the last. This show stands as a reminder to love the little moments in life, apologize, take chances, and enjoy the ride. Its universal message of hope unifies audiences and takes them on a personal and shared journey So as we embark on this ride together, allow yourself to embrace the thrilling and joyful adventure of The Cyclone.
