WearehonoredtowelcomebackdirectorAlana Dietze,aregularcollaboratorwithCalREP,sherecently directedDryLandandOurDearDeadDrugLordto criticalandaudienceacclaim.

Isthereanyfeelingmorefreethancoastingdownahillon yourbikewithnothingaroundyoubutthewindandthe treesandthesunshine?Thisplayisaboutthatfeeling,and alsoaboutwhathappenswhenthatfeelingisinterrupted. Itisaboutthemomentwhensomethingfromthe“real world”intrudesonthejoyandabandonofchildhoodand awakensustotheonlyconstant:change.Finally,it’sabout thequesttoliveagoodandmeaningfullifedespitethe distractionsofmaterial“stuff,”themonsterswhothreaten oursafetyandthepersistenttransformationofthisworld wecallhome.InRedBikeourspeakeroftenaddressesthe audiencedirectly-needingtheirstorytobewitnessedby you,thewatchers.Inthisworld,timeismalleable.Thestory wetellhappenedinthepast,butisalsohappeninginthis moment,intheroominwhichyousit.Weinviteyoutobe present,toparticipate,toreceiveandtocomealongfor theride.

Primarilyfollowingan11-year-oldwhoisridingtheirred bicyclethroughtheirhometown,RedBikeprovidesapeekat theinnerthoughtsofachildontheprecipiceofadulthood. Theyarebecomingdeeplyawareoftheirenvironmentand reflectingonthechangesunfoldingintheircommunity. Thesethoughtsoftentouchondeepersocietalissueslike economicinequalityandthechangingnatureofone’shome. Theplayexploresthemesofchildhooddreams,societal pressures,andcoming-of-ageinadecliningeconomic setting.Atitscore,RedBikecapturestheessenceofwhatit feelsliketobeyoung,dreamingofabroaderworldwhile ridingaredbike.

Svichisaprominentvoicein contemporarytheater,withafocus ondiversestoriesandvoices.
OfCubanheritage,muchoftheirworkreflectstheirLatinx background,whilealsoengagingwithbroadersocialand politicalissues.Theyareanaccomplishedandprolific Americanplaywright,translator,andlyricist,knownforthier innovativeandoftenpoeticworksthatexplorethemesof identity,culture,andthehumanexperience.
Svichhaswrittennumerousplays,whichoftenaddress themessuchasdisplacement,immigration,andthe complexitiesofculturalidentity.NotableworksincludeThe HouseoftheSpirits(anadaptationofIsabelAllende'snovel), TheWayofWater,RedBike,andIphigenia...aravefable.
Theyhavereceivedseveralawardsforthiercontributionsto theater,includinganOBIEAwardforBestNewAmericanPlay in2012forTheHouseoftheSpirits.Svichisalsoarecipientof theNEA/TCGTheatreResidencyforPlaywrights.Thierplays havebeenperformedattheatersaroundtheworld,andthey havebeenavocaladvocatefortheglobaltheater community.
Publishedin2018,RedBikewasinspiredbyCaridad Svich’sreflectionsonhowyoungpeoplegrowupin difficulttimes.Theplayisaboutamemoryofhavinga bikethatmadetheprotagonistdreamofabigger world.
Creatingaplaywithachildasanarratorwasa departureforSvich,andonetheyembracedasa meansofarticulatingthemomentinlifewhenan individualreachesthecrossroadsbetweeninnocence andawareness.“Thereisthisawakeningthathappens aroundage11or12,whenchildrenareworkingon identityandwheretheyarepositionedintheworld,” Caridadsaid.
RedBikehasbeenperformedabout twodozentimessinceitreceiveda NationalNewPlayNetworkRolling WorldPremierein2019.SeveralZoom productionswereproducedduring COVID.
