Thismessageresonateddeeplyuponfirstreadingit.And continuestodosotoday.Itisnotjustprotectionofyour physicalfreedom,buttheprisonsweimposeonourselves everyday,consciouslyornot.

Whetheritbethatloopofnegativethoughtsorstayingin environmentsthatfeelfamiliarandcomfortablethoughwe knowholdusbackfromreachingourfullpotentialtomaking assumptionswithouthavingtruecontext,aboutourselvesand otherpeoplearoundus.

IntheUnitedStatestherearemultiplelegalandcarceral systems.Therearefederal,state,localandtribalsystems whichalloperateindifferingways.

Manypeopleusethetermsjailandprisoninterchangeably, buttherearekeydifferences.Aprisonisafederally-run institutionwherepeoplewhohavebeenconvictedofcrimes servetheresentences.Ajailisrunbyacityorcountyand mostlyhousespeoplewhoareawaitingtrial,meaningthey havenotyetfacedtrialorbeenfoundguiltyofanycrime.

Theterm“PrisonIndustrialComplex”referstothenetworkof relationshipsthegovernmentandtheprivatecompanies whobenefitfinanciallyfromtheprisonsystem.

AsofFebruary2024,27statesandthefederalgovernment partnerwithprivatecompaniestorunsomeoftheirprisons. Thepeopleheldinprivateprisonsaccountfor8%ofthetotal prisonpopulationinthecountry.

TheUnitedStatescurrentlyhasthesecondhighest prisonpopulationintheworld.Chinahasthehighest prisonpopulation.
