WhenyoungLewisDiazaccidentallyresurrects thesoulofabrutallyslaingirlnamedAlice,he unwittinglyunleashesaliteralhellonEarth. Prototypicslasherfilmsarrivedinthe1960s,withHitchcock’s PsychoandPowell’sSleepingTom.Theyincludedsome characteristicsofwhatwouldbeknownasthe“slashergenre.”
Thefirst“true”slasherfilmwasreleasedin1974:Black Christmas.Ithadallthehallmarksofaslasher:amysterious killer,teenvictims,andgraphicviolence.
Slasherfilmsstartedoversaturatingthemarketbecausethey weresoeasytomake.Theuseofviolenceandminimalist settingmeantthescarescouldbecheap(andlow-budget). Sopeoplegrewtiredofthem.
EnterJohnCarpenterandhisfilmHalloween(1978),which revitalizedthegenre. Hewasstrategicinhisscaresand cinematography,andalsore-interpretedsomeofthemore clichédaspectsofthegenre:suchashavingthe“finalgirl” survivebecauseshehasthemostincommonwiththekiller.
