ALICE IN SLASHERLAND

WhenyoungLewisDiazaccidentallyresurrects thesoulofabrutallyslaingirlnamedAlice,he unwittinglyunleashesaliteralhellonEarth. Now,witheveryimaginablekindofdemon, monster,andkillerravaginghissmalltown,it's uptoLewisandhisnewlyundeadcompanion toprotecthisclassmates--including longtimecrushMargaret--frombecoming freshlyslaughteredcarcasses.Withthehelpof Alice'strash-talkingdemonicteddybear, Lewisracestofindawaytoclosetherift beforethedevilhimselfshowsupandtotally ruinstheirsenioryear.

Meet the Playwright: Qui Nguyen

QuiNguyenisanaward-winning playwright,TVwriter,and screenwriter.ForTV,he'swrittenfor

QuiNguyenistheCo-ArtisticDirectoroftheOBIE Awardwinning“geektheater”company:Vampire Cowboys.Itcreatesandproducesnewworksof theatrebasedinaction/adventureanddarkcomedy withacomicbookaesthetic.Thecompanyactively pursuesthematingofdifferentgenreswithvaried theatricalstylestocreateaneclecticstructuretotell itsstories.Thecompanyaimstobridgethegap betweenmassmediaentertainmentandthe performingarts,exposingthecommunityto challenging,thought-provokingliveentertainment rootedintoday’spop-culturevernacular. A"slasherfilm"isatypeofhorrorfilmtypicallyinvolvinga psychopathickillerstalkingandkillingasequenceof victimsinagraphicallyviolentmanner,oftenwitha cuttingtoolsuchasaknifeoraxe.

Slasher Films: An Origin Story

Prototypicslasherfilmsarrivedinthe1960s,withHitchcock’s PsychoandPowell’sSleepingTom.Theyincludedsome characteristicsofwhatwouldbeknownasthe“slashergenre.”

Thefirst“true”slasherfilmwasreleasedin1974:Black Christmas.Ithadallthehallmarksofaslasher:amysterious killer,teenvictims,andgraphicviolence.

Slasherfilmsstartedoversaturatingthemarketbecausethey weresoeasytomake.Theuseofviolenceandminimalist settingmeantthescarescouldbecheap(andlow-budget). Sopeoplegrewtiredofthem.

EnterJohnCarpenterandhisfilmHalloween(1978),which revitalizedthegenre. Hewasstrategicinhisscaresand cinematography,andalsore-interpretedsomeofthemore clichédaspectsofthegenre:suchashavingthe“finalgirl” survivebecauseshehasthemostincommonwiththekiller.

Comic or Camp?

Whilealotofslasherfilmstakeplaceatsummercamp, that’snotquitewhatwemean.

Thestyleofcamp,asdefinedbySusanSontaginher1964 essay“NotesonCamp,”isanaestheticsensibilitythat appreciatessomethingforits“heightenedlevelofartifice, affectation,andexaggeration,”oftenwithaplayfulor ironicelement.It’saboutcelebratingstyleoversubstance, andembracingthe“unnatural”and“beautiful” overrealism.

Thecampsensibilityinslasherfilmscanbeseenasaway forfilmmakerstosubvertgenreexpectationsandoffera senseofself-awareness,acknowledgingtheoften-absurd natureoftheslashergenre.

TheGoldenAgeofHorror Filmsinthe1930sinspired superherocomicartiststo addhorrorelements.It explodedintopopularityin the1950sasawayfor peopletograpplewiththehorrorsofWorldWarII(andasan escape).Horrorcomicsthenexperiencedrepressioninthe 1950swiththeComicsCodeduetoabookthatclaimedhorror, romance,andothercomicgenresledtodelinquency.
