CSU CHANCELLOR’S MESSAGE Timothy P. White Chancellor, The California State University

Dear Class of 2020: Congratulations on your extraordinary achievement during this truly unprecedented time.

The past 10 months marking the final stretch on your journey to earning a California State University degree have been challenging and unpredictable. And I am sure that when you look back upon your commencement in the years to come, it will be with mixed emotions. You’ll often be filled with pride and a well-earned sense of accomplishment for attaining a goal that may have once felt so daunting. At other times, you may feel disappointment because of the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic that continues to sweep across our world, disrupting millions of lives, including yours. The culmination of your college experience was not as you had expected, with the on-campus commencement ceremony being postponed because of this historic public health crisis. But by earning your degree, you displayed grit and resilience to achieve a consequential milestone on the journey of a lifetime. I have every confidence that those qualities will serve you well as you encounter life’s inevitable periods of hardship and uncertainty.

It is my hope that you will also remember the determination, ingenuity and indomitable spirit you and your classmates, along with our faculty and staff, have demonstrated during these challenging times. I will forever admire the class of 2020.

So today, we celebrate you — and the perseverance, scholarship and optimism that brought you to this day. I am proud of you — as are your loved ones, friends, colleagues and our entire CSU family. We are all filled with pride at your accomplishment.

Of course, you did not travel this path alone. We also recognize the faculty who deepened your knowledge and inspired you to see the world and our communities from new perspectives. We acknowledge the counselors, advisors, librarians, coaches and support staff who championed

you at every turn. And we appreciate those who encouraged, uplifted and supported you along the way. Please remember to thank these important people and let them know how much their support means.

We call this celebration a “commencement” because it is not an end but rather a new beginning.

As you start the next chapter of your life, I urge you to continue to wholeheartedly pursue knowledge, truth and innovation. Strive to elevate your community, state, nation and our world as you achieve your personal and professional goals.

And stay in contact with your campus and our CSU community. Connect with classmates, seek out faculty as mentors and join alumni chapters. Look for opportunities to inspire and support future generations who seek to follow in your footsteps.

Congratulations, Class of 2020! You made it!

We often talk about commencement being a bittersweet occasion and reflect on both the trials and the triumphs that you experienced on your journey. This year, those things are more true than ever.

Commencement is the formal end of your time at Cal Poly, and it is disappointing to everyone that this academic year is ending without all the pomp and circumstance that you have earned and would be our pleasure to provide. We hope to provide those things for you in the near future — stay tuned.

But despite the challenges, you persevered, you did the work, and you finished your degrees!

Many congratulations on the achievement and on what it says about your character that you dug for the necessary grit and determination, found it and succeeded!

I know that you are leaving Cal Poly and entering the world of work and adult responsibilities at an unusually difficult time. But you are Cal Poly graduates! You are going out into that uncertain world with the ability to think critically, with needed knowledge and skills, and with the ability to keep learning. I am confident not only that you will find your place in the world but also that you will discover that the world needs you and your unique contributions.

Dear Class of 2020, Congratulations on this incredible achievement. I am honored to recognize you as Cal Poly graduates.

In the final months of your college experience, you overcame challenges and embraced opportunities. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the world, your college experience, your commencement and your next steps after Cal Poly. I am heartened knowing that you will continue to embrace your opportunities and make the positive impact that our world needs right now.

I wish we could all be together now, celebrating this milestone with you, your fellow graduates, your family, friends and supporters. However, I hope you will not let these unusual circumstances take anything away from what you’ve achieved as a graduate of Cal Poly.

As you take your next steps in life, I hope you will continue to embrace the connections you made throughout your time at Cal Poly. Your professors, advisors and the many staff members with whom you have interacted would love to hear from you as you venture on to the next stage of your life and career. Congratulations, Class of 2020!

Whether you’re at home or with us locally here in San Luis Obispo, I hope that you are celebrating this important achievement! Earning a Cal Poly degree is a significant moment in your lives, and one that you should be very proud of achieving. I know your parents and supporters are proud of you, as am I. I will always remember this class because of some very specific traits all of you possess: your resilience and ability to adapt — and your willingness to help others during one of the most challenging times we have faced collectively. Many of you finished your time at Cal Poly in a way none of us imaged less than a year ago. But even during the toughest times, you managed to remain resilient, selfless and true to yourselves. You stood up for others facing injustice in our communities; you lent a helping hand when one was needed most; and you showed care for the well-being of others in your words and deeds.

None of this comes as a surprise to me, because all of these traits embody the true definition of a Cal Poly graduate. For that, I am grateful to know you.

All of us who have worked to support you from WOW to now (as I like to say) will miss you and are excited for you to join the Cal Poly alumni community. Given your character, unflappable resilience and courage, I cannot wait to see how you will positively impact our world in the future.

To my fellow Mustangs, As a graduating class who has had an experience unlike any other, you have developed the grit and dedication to head into the world knowing that it may not look exactly like what you expect.

The various challenges you faced over the course of your time here, as hard as they may have seemed, were the building blocks to set you up to be ready for what comes next after you leave Cal Poly.

The growth that you will continue to face, especially in the coming months, is summarized by a phrase you’ve heard plenty: Learn by Doing. Our generation has already emerged as the leaders of social movements aiming to make the world a place filled with more love, empathy and respect. Continue to make change by immersing yourself in topics you are passionate about, working toward your idea of happiness, and not letting your time at Cal Poly be the end of your educational journey.

You are heading into a world full of unknowns that has a calling for innovators, movement makers, and leaders who will spearhead companies, communities and campaigns in new and exciting ways. You have all made an impact on Cal Poly, and for that we celebrate and thank you.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER Victor J. Glover, Jr. Commander, U.S. Navy and NASA Astronaut

Victor J. Glover, Jr. was selected as an astronaut in 2013 while serving as a Legislative Fellow in the U.S. Senate. He is currently training for Crew-1, the first post-certification mission of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft — the second crewed flight for that vehicle — and a long-duration mission aboard the International Space Station.

Glover and his crewmates are working closely with SpaceX to develop their new spacecraft systems, which will provide roundtrip crew transportation services to the International Space Station and, along with Boeing’s Starliner, return the ability to launch humans into space from U.S. soil.

The California native holds a Bachelor of Science in general engineering, a Master of Science in flight test engineering, a Master of Science in systems engineering and a Master of Military Operational Art and Science. Glover is a naval aviator and was a test pilot in the F/A‐18 Hornet, Super Hornet and EA‐18G Growler. He and his family have been stationed in many locations in the U.S. and Japan, and he has deployed in combat and peacetime.

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT Susan Armstrong Senior Vice President, Engineering at Qualcomm

Susan "Susie" Armstrong currently serves as the senior vice president, Engineering at Qualcomm.

Armstrong has worked at Qualcomm for 25 years and is one of the engineers who pioneered the mobile internet, inventing the software that allows cell phones to deal with data — everything from accessing web pages to using apps and viewing photos.

At Qualcomm she has held various leadership positions, first as the head of Software Engineering in Qualcomm's mobile chipset division, and then as the head of worldwide Customer Engineering, the group that integrates and commercializes the company's products in phones and other wireless devices. She has worked extensively with phone and device makers in Asia and Europe to bring Qualcomm's technologies to market.

Armstrong joined Qualcomm's Government Affairs group, where she brings an engineering and product background working in worldwide public policy, including intellectual property protection, trade and immigration reform, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and STEM diversity.

Prior to joining Qualcomm in 1994, Armstrong worked for 10 years at the Xerox Systems Development Department and the Xerox Webster Research Center, holding a variety of software engineering positions that focused on data protocols and operating systems and advanced development in high-speed data networking. In February 2017, Armstrong was named one of the most powerful female engineers by Business Insider.

Armstrong has been a longstanding Cal Poly supporter and serves as a corporate champion for the university within Qualcomm. She has been influential in introductions between corporate leadership and campus leadership. Armstrong is also a loyal annual supporter of Cal Poly with over 22 years of giving history to the Computer Science Department.

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT John Ronca Attorney at Law

John Ronca is an attorney in San Luis Obispo, California. He began his practice in 1979, concentrating in the areas of estate and business planning. He is certified as a specialist by the California State Bar in the areas of estate planning, trust and probate law. He is a member of the California State Bar Association and the San Luis Obispo County Bar Association.

Ronca is a proud alumnus of Cal Poly, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration in 1975. He earned his Juris Doctorate degree in 1978 from the Pepperdine University School of Law, and in 1979, he earned his master's degree in the laws of taxation from the Denver University School of Law. Ronca is a current member of the Cal Poly Foundation board, chair of the Athletic Director's Council, Legal Counsel for the Cal Poly Alumni Association, and past lecturer teaching business law in Cal Poly's Orfalea College of Business. Ronca and his wife, Tracy, are campaign co-chairs for Cal Poly's The Power of Doing: The Campaign for Learn By Doing. He is a current or former member of numerous community boards, including French Hospital Medical Center, Mission College Preparatory High School Board of Regents, the Rossi Foundation, and the Northern California Golf Association. The Roncas are founding members of Tennis Connect SLO's board of directors.

Ronca has received the highest rating awarded by the prestigious Martindale-Hubbell attorney rating service and has written and published numerous articles and co-authored the Durable Power of Attorney Handbook published by the California State Bar.

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT Rick Stollmeyer Executive Chairman, MINDBODY, Inc.

Rick Stollmeyer co-founded MINDBODY, Inc. in 2001 and recently transitioned to the role of executive chairman after serving over 16 years as the organization's CEO. He continues to serve as a principle visionary, ensuring that everything the company embraces serves its vision: leveraging technology to improve the wellness of the world.

As an advisor-turned-partner, Stollmeyer helped take MINDBODY online from a home-­based operation with 12 clients to a full-fledged software development company serving over 500,000 beauty, health and wellness practitioners at 53,000 businesses in over 130 countries. In 2005, Stollmeyer took MINDBODY's business management system fully to the cloud. Under his leadership, MINDBODY hosted BOLD, an annual wellness and beauty conference. Previous BOLD speakers include Michelle Obama, Billie Jean King, Arianna Huffington, Magic Johnson, Jillian Michaels and Deepak Chopra.

Stollmeyer holds a bachelor's degree in political science and Russian language from the U.S. Naval Academy. After graduating from the Naval Academy, Stollmeyer served in the Navy for six years as a submarine officer.

He and his wife, Jill (Recreation Administration, '97), have been leaders at Cal Poly with their time, talent and treasure. Both serve as campaign co-chairs of the Power of Doing campaign, and Rick Stollmeyer has been a member of the Cal Poly Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Advisory Council since 2013. In 2018, the Stollmeyers made a transformational gift in support of Cal Poly Scholars and Mustang Scholars. The Stollmeyers reside in San Luis Obispo, California.
