Town Mayor’s Message The start of a New Year presents the opportunity to reflect on events past and anticipate events to come. 2016 was by any measure a very busy year for the town. We entertained our continental guests from our twinned towns in Germany and France and welcomed the inaugural Rotary Classic Car Rally in addition to the numerous other annual community events. The town saw 2016 out with a bang. The Bonfire & Fireworks night was spectacular, with the bonus of being filmed live by BBC Points West. Of course this recognition of our community was followed by the Guinness World RecordsTM breaking event on The Green on 3rd December. This spectacular event, masterminded by Bible Society and Calne Town Council, put Calne firmly in the spotlight nationally. Huge thanks must go to you, the townspeople, for engaging in the fun of the evening as well as to the town laundrette, the White Hart Hotel and the residents of The Green for providing extra sheets and converting them into shepherds costumes on the night. I would also like to thank the Council staff who worked so very hard to make the event such a success. Recognition of our efforts were reported widely across the nation on TV, radio and the newspapers. I was pleased to inaugurate the first Calne Mayor’s Christmas Day Lunch for those who would otherwise spend the day on their own, as well as families for whom providing such a lunch would stretch their resources. Over 30 people attended and the day was well received with compliments from those that participated. The event was organised by volunteers and funding was generously provided by local businesses. To all of you I offer my enormous thanks for a job well done. 2017 will see Calne Community Neighbourhood Plan come to fruition. This important community milestone has been three years in the making and as the Chair of the Steering Group, I would like to thank my co-members for their dedication over that time. As I write, we are in the closing stage of public consultation before passing the plan to Wiltshire Council for review. On receiving the plan back from the Government Inspector we shall then put it to a community referendum. If approved by you, the plan will pass into law and allow only development that we wish to take place in the community.

Let me say in closing that it has been a massive honour to have been the Town Mayor over the past year. To have been at the heart of a town like Calne with its diverse activities and wonderfully warm hearted and welcoming folk has been nothing but a pleasure. Not many of us are given the opportunity to wear the mayoral robes and represent this town, which is why to do so is a very special honour indeed and one that will stay with me for a very long time to come. Focus on: Calne Town Council’s Town Grounds Staff Team The Grounds Staff Team work to make Calne a greener and cleaner place to live, work and visit. Their roles include, amongst many others: The design, planting and maintenance of Calne’s award- winning floral schemes. Maintaining a number of open spaces including Curzon Street Cemetery and play areas. Keeping the town centre clean and litter-free.

Town Mayor’s Charities Each year the Town Mayor selects charities they wish to fundraise for throughout the year. In 2016 – 17, Town Mayor Councillor Tom Rounds has chosen to support:

Revival – Wiltshire RASAC “We are delighted to be nominated by the Mayor of Calne as one of his chosen charities. This opportunity will provide a much needed platform to raise awareness of our work in the community and to reach new audiences. Revival – Wiltshire RASAC offers free confidential counselling and support for men and women who have been raped or sexually abused. It doesn’t matter when or where, no one should suffer in silence. We are here to help survivors make sense of what’s happened to them and begin to make life changing choices for themselves. The Royal British Legion was formed in 1921 to provide financial, social and emotional support to ex-service personnel and their families. The Calne Branch provides support to many local residents, as well as holding meetings on the third Sunday of the month at the White Hart Hotel and organising: Calne’s Remembrance Day Parade - Attendance at the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall - Support to local reunions and church services - Fundraising during town events The Branch is extremely grateful to be listed among the Town Mayor’s Charities and thanks Councillor Tom Rounds for supporting ex-military personnel and their families in the town. Town Council Elections
Thursday 4th May 2017 Every four years you have the opportunity to vote for Councillors to represent you on Calne Town Council. The next elections will be held on Thursday 4th May and you will receive a polling card in the post to vote. About Calne Town Council
Calne is divided into four areas called wards: Chilvester & Abberd Ward, North Ward, South Ward and Central Ward. To find out which ward your address falls under visit www.calne.gov.uk. Calne Town Council is served by 19 Councillors. Each ward has four to five Councillors, with one Councillor from each ward also elected to Wiltshire Council in addition to Calne Town Council. Councillors attend Full Council meetings in the Town Hall and sit on at least one of the following committees: Amenities Committee - looks after spaces and facilities including the Town Hall, Curzon Street Cemetery and Beversbrook Sports & Community Facility. Policy & Resources Committee - responsible for all aspects of policy making, financial and staffing matters and awards grants to support local organisations.

Town Development & Planning Committee - discusses the Town Council’s response to planning applications and items such as public transport and car parking.

Anyone is eligible to be elected as a Councillor provided they: are 18 years or older, are a British/ EU citizen and live within three miles of the parish (within twelve months of an election) or have land or a business in the parish. Being an effective Councillor requires both commitment and hard work, and includes: Representing your ward and responding to enquiries from constituents Decision-making Developing and reviewing council policy Community leadership and engagement To stand in the election, candidates must submit a nomination paper to Wiltshire Council with two nominations from supporters within their ward by Tuesday 4th April. Recent Projects & Events New Allotments at Marden Farm Eighteen new allotments are being handed over to Calne Town Council for community use as part of the Redrow Cherhill View housing development. The allotments boast accessible raised beds, dip tanks and benches. Redrow chose to dedicate 2224 sqm of its land at Cherhill View as part of its commitment to invest in all the communities where it has developments. Calne Town Mayor Councillor Tom Rounds said: “These allotments will add to the increasingly popular and practical pastime for the people of Calne. With more than 100 people on the waiting list for an allotment, these additional plots cannot have arrived too soon.”
The independent businesses of Church Street invite shoppers to enjoy Calne Heritage Quarter
Two Hours Free Parking Visitors and residents can now enjoy two hours free parking in Calne Heritage Quarter Car Park throughout 2017. The scheme has been funded by Calne Town Council with the intention of encouraging footfall and increasing the length of time spent in the town, particularly in the historic streets and independent businesses of Calne Heritage Quarter. Calne Town Council previously funded two six month trials of the scheme in 2016. 71% of respondents to an online survey about the trials felt that the free parking had encouraged them to visit the town centre more frequently, with 75% using the car park for shopping in the town. The survey collected 163 comments about the scheme including: “A much appreciated service which has increased my calls at the local retail outlets.” “I choose to come to Calne for the independent businesses in the heritage quarter. Free parking means I do so more often.” Located in the heart of ‘Old Calne’ and accessed from the A4, the car park is the perfect place from which to enjoy Calne Heritage Quarter with Castlefields Park, Calne Heritage Centre and the town’s Blue Plaque Trail all within a five minute walk from the car park.

Town Mayor’s Christmas Lunch Over 30 local residents who would have otherwise been alone at Christmas were welcomed to Calne Town Hall on Christmas Day for the inaugural Calne Town Mayor’s Christmas Day Lunch. The Town Mayor would like to thank local resident Stan Woods for co-ordinating the event, the many volunteers who gave their time on Christmas Day and the businesses and individuals who donated to support the event.
The Steering Group would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to read, digest and comment on the Draft Neighbourhood Plan. All of the comments have been considered by the group; amendments have been made and additional information included within the Plan where it was felt necessary. Thank you for your continued support. We will keep you all up to date with progress as we move ever closer to submitting the Calne Community Neighbourhood Plan to Wiltshire Council.

Calne’s Guinness World RecordsTM title The Guinness World RecordsTM title for The Most Living Figures in a Nativity Scene was broken by the Calne community on Saturday 3rd December during Calne Christmas Festival. A total of 1254 people took part dressed as angels, shepherds and wise men, breaking the record of 1039 set in Utah, USA, in December 2014. The event was organised by Calne Town Council and Bible Society and reached the national news with mentions in The Telegraph and on Good Morning Britain to name but a few. A huge thank you goes to every single person who took part including the volunteer marshals, Calne Players and the many businesses who supported the event. The official Guinness World RecordsTM certificate is on display at Calne Visitor & Community Information Centre.
Nominations Open for Calne Civic Awards Know a community champion or young person living in the Calne parish who has made a real difference? Looking for a way to thank someone for their support over the past year? Nominations are open until Sunday 12th March for this year’s Civic Awards. The following three awards are given each year by Calne’s Town Mayor: Town Mayor’s Civic Awards Recognising the actions of an individual, couple or group for their hard work and endeavours for the Calne community .

Young Citizens Award - Recognising the actions of a young person or group of young people that have had a positive impact on the town or its community. The award is open to all young people living in Calne aged 11 to 17. Town Mayor’s Gift Fund - A grant of £250 to enable a young person who has demonstrated outstanding ability in sports or the arts to develop their skills.
The award is open to all young people living in Calne aged 11 to 18. Nomination forms are available from www.calne.gov.uk or Calne Visitor & Community Information Centre. The awards will be presented during the Annual Parish Meeting which is open to all to attend on Friday 24th March at 7pm, Calne Town Hall.

Calne in Bloom will be holding their first community plant, bulb and seed swap event during the Lions Duck Race on Saturday 13th May from 10am at The Wharf. In conjunction with Keep Britain Tidy’s ‘Great British Spring Clean’ Calne Town Council and Calne in Bloom will be holding a Spring Clean Calne Litter Pick on Sunday 5th March, 11am – 1pm, meet in lower Sainsbury’s car park. Entries to this year’s Gardens Competition can be made until Friday 16th June, with judging taking place mid-July.

Exciting Times for Girls’ and Women’s Football in Calne

#WeCanPlay on Twitter captures the most recent revolution in football in this country – the increasing number of girls and women who are taking up the sport. This is partly due to the success of the England Lionesses who finished third in the Women’s World Cup last year and currently ranked fifth in the world. Local football clubs FC Calne and Derry Hill Utd have put aside their rivalry to provide an opportunity for local female players to progress through junior, youth and adult teams. Derry Hill Utd has had girls-only football teams for over a decade. However the clubs are now working together to form a new FC Calne Ladies team for players aged 16 and over. FC Calne Ladies train at Beversbrook Sports & Community Facility every Thursday 7pm to 8.30pm. Since forming last year, the team competes in the Wiltshire County Women’s and Girls’ Football League and the number of girls playing girlsonly football at Derry Hill Utd is increasing.
Chris Saville, Chairman at Derry Hill Utd FC, said “It is fabulous to see the two football clubs working together. It is a powerful partnership and one that is already paying dividends for both clubs and for girls and women locally who want to play football. We are really pleased to be working with FC Calne to help make this happen.” Beversbrook Sports & Community Facility Manager Kevin Whitehorn said “Beversbrook is pleased to be supporting the teams with their development at this exciting time for women’s football.
