CONSULTATION REVIEW February and March saw a major consultation phase of the Calne Community Neighbourhood Plan being undertaken. Combining a mixture of four events across the Town and Calne Without parishes along with an online and paper survey, over 400 people responded with their views and opinions around the issues that the Steering Group is working on.

The comments made have been incredibly insightful and useful in developing the plan and have assisted the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group in moving the plan forward.

The Steering Group is now working hard to move the plan onto its next stage; some additional consultation, before developing the draft plan.

There was an interesting response to the question asking: If the quantity, location and community benefits could be locally defined (through the Neighbourhood Plan), would people support some limited housing growth in Calne and Calne Without; 50% said that they would and 30% said that they weren’t sure or it depended on what benefits would be gained. Therefore, an immediate action for the Steering Group is to go back out to consultation to help define where and what benefits would be gained.

Calne First in Wiltshire to Form Dementia Action Alliance Calne has become the first community in Wiltshire to form a Dementia Action Alliance (DAA). The aim of the DAA is to help create a community where people with dementia feel confident, understood and supported to live well.

Organisations including Calne Town Council, Wiltshire Council’s Calne Area Board and the Alzheimer’s Society have joined forces alongside people with dementia and their families to form the Calne Dementia Action Alliance.

CALNE TOWN CENTRE MASTERPLAN UPDATE RECENT DEVELOPMENTS

THE MASTERPLAN Development of land around The Pippin to attract local shoppers and tourists, create a night-time economy for the people of Calne, provide employment and build a greater sense of community.

• McCarthy & Stone have proposed to build 32 retirement apartments in the middle of the masterplan area. The Town Council has opposed the application, concluding that “no element of the development fits with the Development Brief for the Masterplan and we therefore urge Wiltshire Council to reject the application as being contrary to the requirements of the Core Strategy and the National Planning Policy Framework, as well as the town’s own Masterplan”. The Town Council supports the development of retirement homes, but not in this space destined for public entertainment, shops, restaurants, bars and cafés.

REDEVELOPMENT OF THE TOWN HALL COMPLEX

• The Town Clerk has continued to work with Wiltshire Council, who owns a large part of the land within the masterplan area. Wiltshire Council is clearly committed to helping the town address its masterplan ambitions.

NEXT STEPS • Looking in more detail at how the masterplan will improve the circulation of traffic and enhance the natural flow for pedestrians throughout the scheme.

• Ensuring that policies and proposals are firmly tied into the emerging Neighbourhood Plan.

Calne Town Council is in the very early stages of a redevelopment project for the Town Hall.

The project will transform spaces such as the old fire & ambulance station behind the Town Hall into areas that can be enjoyed by the Calne community and visitors to the town.

Plans include developing a gallery space, cafe and atrium to unite all areas of the Town Hall - creating a cultural hub and civic centre for the town.

One of Europe’s largest free biker events and a great family day out. The event starts from 10am in the town centre with owner’s clubs, stalls and traders.

At 4pm, the town will rattle and vibrate to the sound of hundreds of motorcycles all warming up to roll out on an official ride out for a 40 minute loop.

CALNE CIVIC AWARDS 2016 Thank you for all nominations for this year’s Civic Awards. The winners were announced at the Annual Parish Meeting in the Town Hall on 18th March.

Town Mayor’s Civic Award Awarded to JR Dawson (above) in recognition of his many and varied services to the Calne community and to Kevin Wells and Andrew Marshall (right) in recognition of their voluntary work for Calne Leisure Centre.

Beversbrook Sports & Community Facility and Castlefields Canal & River Park (CARP) have both been awarded five stars in South West in Bloom’s Pride in Parks awards. Jake Brock from the Calne Bowl Project also collected the South West in Bloom Youth Award at the ceremony on 25th February for outstanding contribution by youths. The group jointly won the award

alongside a project in Exeter. The trophy will be in Calne for the next six months. It's fantastic that the Calne community can enjoy these green spaces and great to see the teams that look after them get recognition for their hard work.

New Date and Venue for Hanging Basket Event The Hanging Basket Community Event will now be held on Saturday 7th May, with three sessions at 10:00, 11:15 and 12:30 in New Market Place, Phelps Parade, Calne.

Join Calne Town Council’s Head Groundsman for a hanging basket demonstration with a variety of plants available for sale along with liners, compost and gel. Bring your own basket or empty baskets will be available. Spaces are limited so book early to avoid disappointment by calling Calne Town Council on 01249 814000. There will also be sunflower seeds for under 12s to plant with a prize for the tallest sunflower.

SUMMER RUGBY TRAINING IN CALNE Calne Rugby Football Club will be holding touch rugby and fitness sessions open to everyone regardless of age/fitness level throughout the summer at Calne Recreation Ground, Anchor Road.
