Calne has received Gold at the RHS South West in Bloom awards for the second year running.

This is an amazing achievement and the Calne in Bloom committee thank the whole team of grounds staff, groups, schools and the community in helping Calne to maintain its high standards and impress the judges.

Judging Day The RHS South West in Bloom judges, Lesley Jelleyman and Terry Porter, visited Calne on Wednesday 8th July. After meeting representatives of the many community groups in the town and learning about the work that has taken place during the year, they were escorted around this year’s route

by Stuart West, Outdoor Facilities Manager and Trudy King, Calne in Bloom Coordinator. The Atwell-Wilson Motor Museum very kindly offered the use of their beautiful Rolls-Royce for the duration, driven by Michael Bennett.

Both judges were very enthusiastic and gave positive remarks about the town’s cleanliness, sense of community pride and the beautiful floral colour scheme. Also assessed were the nineteen ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ entries; these are projects which are led by groups within the community, who then develop and maintain them.

South West in Bloom Awards, Britannia Naval College, Dartmouth Calne in Bloom representatives attended the South West in Bloom Awards Ceremony in Dartmouth on 24th September. Before finding out Calne achieved Gold, results for the RHS ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ entries were presented by Jonathon Dimbleby. Nineteen groups entered this year from Calne, which included four schools and two youth groups. The results were brilliant, with the schools doing particularly well for their first year. The Calne Skate Bowl Group (pictured below) jointly won the award for ‘Best Youth Achievement’ in the South West.

This award is shared with a group from Exeter, with the cup coming to Calne in February for six months.

In July, representatives from the Calne in Bloom working group judged entries for the gardens’ competition. Every year the standard is higher and it is difficult to choose the winners in each category, sometimes there is only one point between the places. Autumn Events Reflection Calne Festival of Food and Drink on 5th September saw Great British Bake Off quarter finalist Christine Wallace give a demonstration in the Town Hall alongside The Flying Pig Cake Emporium, Slimming World, Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and The HACCA (Healthy Active Calne Community Area).

Over 2000 people visited the town centre during the event to meet local food and drink producers. The event committee would like to thank Arkells Brewery and Sainsbury’s for supporting the event.

Calne Heritage Week Over 1500 people celebrated the town’s past during Calne’s first Heritage Week, 7th - 13th September. The programme of nineteen walks, talks and events included free entry to the Atwell-Wilson Motor Museum, a chance to see inside Calne’s intriguing 17th Century Almshouses and a Victorian themed event in the Town Hall. Organisers would like to thank all who supported the week and are looking forward to next year’s event.

Camels to Lead Lantern Parade Now in its 14th year, Calne’s famous Lantern Parade will be led by traditional Nativity characters the Three Kings and their Camels. After the Christmas Lights Switch On, meet the camels on The Wharf.

Live Nativity Scene A first for the Christmas Festival, the firework finale will be followed by a live Nativity on The Wharf. Local theatre group Calne Players will form a tableau recreating the traditional scene.

The scene will include live animals and be surrounded by carol singers, creating a magical end to the day’s entertainment.

Win a ‘Bake Off’ Christmas Cake Enter a raffle for the chance to win a beautiful Christmas cake (pictured) made by Great British Bake Off quarter finalist Christine Wallace. Raffle tickets are £1 each and can be purchased at Calne Bonfire and Fireworks on Friday 6th November and from Calne Community and Visitor Information Centre until 12 noon on Saturday 28th November. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Town Mayor’s charities, which this year are Cancer Research UK and The British Heart Foundation. The winning ticket will be picked at random by Christine Wallace at the Christmas Festival. Good luck!

Calne Town Council has been listening to the community and what it has to say about dog mess and litter in our streets, parks and open spaces.

We would like to work with you to ensure that those responsible for creating mess and causing health hazards are held to account.

Town Council staff have completed training to issue fixed penalty notices of £75 to those who drop litter or fail to clear up after

their dog. Whilst the Town Council can now issue these fines, we would rather work with the community to solve this problem and encourage people to be more responsible. The cleanliness and welcoming appearance of the town this summer has recently been recognised at the RHS South West in Bloom awards, where Calne was awarded Gold.

Following this success, the Town Council would like to encourage the community to keep Calne looking great all year round starting with keeping Calne clean.

So what have the Calne Community Neighbourhood Plan volunteers been up to?

• The Calne Community Neighbourhood Plan is divided up into six key areas which will form the basis of the plan, these are; Housing & Infrastructure, Getting Around, Working & Shopping, Environment, Health, Leisure & Wellbeing and Renewable Energy.

• Every one of these groups have been busy working away, researching and gathering evidence and talking to people in the local area to find out what the community really want.

• We have also been very lucky to welcome on board a number of new volunteers on several of the sub groups, which is fantastic news and very much appreciated.

• The groups are currently preparing new sets of questions, based on what you have already told us and these will be rolled out at the next round of public consultation which will take place in the Autumn and will include specific sessions on housing & infrastructure.

Calne Renewable Energy and the Neighbourhood Plan The Town Council has been working to develop renewable energy projects in Calne. It is now clear that central government intends that these new developments should be established through the neighbourhood planning systems already in place in our community. This means that future local developments that are designed to respond to the problem of climate change (including renewable energy technologies) will be developed as part of the Neighbourhood Planning process. Calne’s response to our changing climate is likely to include the creation of local facilities that generate energy from renewable sources as well as innovations in waste reduction and waste management. And because these developments can only be successful with the full engagement of our whole community through public consultation, renewable energy will be the subject of up-coming public meetings and surveys.

FREE HEALTH TRAINERS IN CALNE Do you want to improve your health?

Are you struggling to eat healthily and be a healthy weight or know you don’t do enough exercise? Concerned about the amount you drink or that you should stop smoking but don’t know where to start?

A health trainer may be able to help. They offer free support to people over the age of 18 and will work with you for six sessions to build motivation and confidence to help you help yourself. For more information, email health.trainers@wiltshire.gov.uk or call 0300 003 4566.

A £6,450.00 grant was given to Calne Town Council for Beversbrook Sports and Community Facility thanks to the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund, which provides grants towards developing new or refurbished grassroots football facilities.

The grant has enabled Beversbrook to purchase a tractor which will help the award winning facility to maintain the football pitches to a high standard and to enable the qualified grounds staff to implement an intense maintenance programme.

Beversbrook Sports and Community Facility is home to 75 football teams including Wiltshire’s only pro club Swindon Town.
